LABOR DAY best

Dear Ansley Members,

A NOTE FROM JIM SCHWARZKOPF & LEE BIRDSONG
LRP COMMITTEE CHAIRS
It’s been an exciting and eventful year at Ansley Golf Club, with many important projects underway and more on the horizon. As we continue to invest in and enhance our facilities, we remain focused on planning for the future to ensure the best possible experience for our members.
Among the many accomplishments this year, we are pleased to announce the completion of the protective netting along the Beltline—a significant safety improvement for our neighbors enjoying the beltline. Additionally, major renovations are in progress at Settindown, and we are preparing for the upcoming transformation of the 1912 Grill and along with updates to many areas of the third floor. Plans for rebuilding the Ansley Maintenance building are also under review, ensuring that our club remains well-maintained and equipped for future needs.
Based on the results of the 2022-Membership Survey and facility improvements determined by club management, we have identified key areas for improvement: upgrading the tennis building, pickleball courts and pool area. Concept plans for these improvements have been shared at the past two annual meetings, and we continue to refine those plans with careful consideration of the financial and operational impacts.
To support these initiatives, the Long-Range Planning Committee established six sub-committees to explore various aspects of our future growth. Four of these sub-committees are focused on the new building’s design, costs, financial implications for membership, and communication strategies. Additionally, one sub-committee is addressing parking and real estate opportunities, while another is evaluating the potential benefits of creating an Ansley Foundation.
The parking and real estate sub-committee is actively assessing opportunities to increase parking capacity or acquire land that serves the club’s needs. Meanwhile, the foundation sub-committee has presented a proposal to establish the Ansley Foundation, which would align with practices at other clubs across the country. The foundation could support charitable efforts, employee engagement, and community involvement, allowing events like the Make A Difference philanthropic initiative to run through the club’s Ansley foundation.
Towards the end of the year, please look for communications regarding next year’s committee opportunities. Over 150 members serve on various standing committees each year. The LRP Committee are charged to conduct initial interviews with prospective committee members. Upon review, LRP will provide names of interested members to the Committee Chairs to complete the interview process and serve for the coming year.
In closing, we would like to thank all members of the LRP committee who have dedicated their time not only for the early morning monthly meetings, but also their work within their sub committees.
With so much happening at Ansley, we are not only making strides today but also looking ahead to ensure the club’s long-term success. We are grateful for your continued support and enthusiasm as we work together to shape Ansley’s bright future.
Jim Schwarzkopf and Lee Birdsong

Celebrating 20 years
How long have you worked at Ansley?
I celebrated my 20th year in April - although I must say, it really doesn't feel like 20 years. During this period, I have been a part of an amazing team at Ansley Golf Club, something I am very happy about.
Which positions have you held at Ansley? Which positions have you held at Ansley? Since I was 29, I have only worked as a golf cart attendant at Midtown. I've worked closely with the entire golf team ensuring that the outside golf operations run smoothly for members and their guests around the course. I've had the pleasure not only discovering what it's like to work at a Country Club but also getting to know many members very well; laughing, crying, swapping stories and sharing memories.
How did you find yourself working at Ansley Golf Club?
It was right when I was in between jobs, trying to figure out my path and what it was I wanted to do. At first, the search was rather rocky, but I decided to contact the unemployment office to show me a few options of what was out there at the time. When scanning the list, I discovered Ansley Golf Club. I had never worked at a Country Club, nor had I played golf either, so I thought, GREAT, a new opportunity. I rang Ansley the next day & they asked me to come in for an interview. I received a call a few days later and they offered me the job. It's funny though, the only memories I have of golf is with my siblings at a very young age while we grazed the outside barriers of railroad tracks for golf balls in my home town of Cairo. However, I was excited about the opportunity and once I started, I fell in love with the members, and the rest, as they say, is history.
What advice would you give your younger self? Do what feels right for you at the time. Don't feel pressure into following a path if your heart isn't in it. If you are happy in a job that you enjoy, the rest will fall into place. .
& enjoying every minute of it.

What are your plans for the future?

My anniversary is a major accomplishment! I’ve worked hard, learned, grown, and intentionally challenged myself and others to be better. Reaching this milestone makes me wonder what’s next for me? I have so much more to accomplish, and I'm eager to see where life takes me. These past 20 years working at AGC has shown me what a real family can be like in the workplace, but it's also encouraged me to succeed outside of my comfort zones. I am grateful I can spend my days out on the golf course with a fresh breeze & I'm even more grateful to be a part of the AGC team but will I work here until my time of retirement…who knows....Happy 20 years to me!
“I have been a part of an amazing team at Ansley Golf Club, something I am very happy about.”

Trackman “Reality Check”
• How far do you hit your clubs?
• Do you know the difference in the carry distance and total distance of your clubs?
• Do you have multiple clubs that you hit the same distance in your bag?
• 3-5 yards appears insignificant, but 9-15 feet short, long, left, or right can be the difference in birdie or double bogey during each round.
Spend one-hour at Settindown in the Learning Center hitting four to six shots with each club in your bag, obtaining genuine carry distance, total distance, and much more.
Trackman launch monitor measures and displays the full trajectory of any shot, from 6-foot pitches to 400-yard drives, pinpointing the landing position with an accuracy of 1½ feet at 160 yards. It also maps the shot's 3D trajectory in real time, together with all impact and launch information. The radar systems track Club Path and Face Angle to Swing Direction and Low Point. Furthermore, the Full Ball Flight - from Launch to Land Angle; including Spin Rate and Curvature.

Another Wonderful Norma Dow Tournament
Just ask anyone who participated . . . This year’s Norma Dow was one of the best ever! Sixty-two players came together on Wednesday, August 21st for the last ALGA event at Settindown before the course renovation. The weather was toasty, and many great scores were posted in a heated battle.
In First Place with a score of 19 under par was the team of Debbie Abels, Monika Thiels, Anne Barratt & Jeanie Huebner. There was a tie for second place, broken with the dreaded “scorecard tiebreaker”, putting Vanessa Robisch, Kelly Harper, Deb Llewellyn & Holli Cortelyou in Second Place at –17. Third Place went to Chrissy Martin, Jill Johnson, Becky Holloway & Laurie Maughon who also posted 17 under par. Excellent scores by all!
On course, Kathy Frith stepped up to win the Straightest Drive on #6, with her ball literally inches from the rope line . . . quite impressive! Closest to the Hole on #7 was won by Lindsey Sosebee at 6’6” from the pin. Judi Allen won Closest to the Hole on #17 by landing her tee shot 4’1” from the hole. Way to go ladies.
In addition to a wonderful light breakfast, participants enjoyed a goody bag, on-cart snacks, a “special delivery” snack mid-round, and a complimentary Margarita and appetizers after the round. A huge THANKS to Nancy Wiesner and her team who knocked it out of the park once again. We can’t wait for the 2026 Norma Dow on the newly renovated Settindown Creek!

Racquet & String Tune-Ups for ALTA
Most tennis players do not take the time to keep up the string and grip on their racquets even though these are the two touch points that are the most important parts. The grip is where you have all the feel and control of the frame, and the strings are the only part of the racquet that actually touches (or should touch) the ball. If either of these are not performing well, your play will suffer. If the grip is slick players tend to hold the racquet far too tight and it hampers the way in which your arm swings. It can also cause tennis elbow when you hold the grip too right. The strings are by far the most important piece of the racquet, as it is the contact point for the ball. The type of string, tension, and string patterns can make the racquet feel completely different. If you are having any arm or shoulder pain, make sure that you are using a softer (multifilament) string and lower the tension a few pounds. If you are having control issues you can use a tighter/stiffer string to help, give you more control.
You should make sure to restring/regrip your racquet at least every six months. If you do it at the beginning of each ALTA season you should stay in good shape.
Contact our Racquet Technician, Tony Burke, tburke@ansleygc.org to help you out this season!
