Welcome back to our annual Stuffed Animal Drive! Tweens are going to the Atlanta Gladiators Game for their stuffed animal toss. We will be collecting new or slightly used stuffed animals November 1 – December 15 to take to the game. The donation boxes will be located outside of the Ansley Room, by the receptionist’s desk, and in the Shark’s Den. It is a great opportunity to clean out some stuffed animals before the holidays. The first time the gladiators score, we will toss the stuffed animals on the ice. They collect them for the police officers and firefighters to use when they respond to calls with children. We will be meeting at the Shark’s Den at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, December 16 and returning to Ansley at 10:45 p.m.

Our Ansley membership and Staff are and will always remain the heart of the club. Each year, we work tirelessly to provide the very best private club experience for every Member and Associate. Over the past few years, we have witnessed consistently high volumes of activity in all areas of the Club. There is little doubt that you too have felt that heightened activity and have noticed more members of the same family utilizing the facilities. We love the fact that the Club has become more important to more family members. With the additional usage, the Membership Committee continues to work appropriately to ensure the membership has a positive experience.

Welcoming new members to Ansley is important to the growth and financial health of Ansley Golf Club. The Membership Committee is tasked to continuously review and evaluate membership categories and procedures to ensure that Ansley can continue to remain a Club of choice in Atlanta. This includes member access, length of our waitlist and financial impact.

Since 2021, the Membership Committee, with the support of the Board of Directors, has limited the number of new members invited to join the club to three per month. The 36 per year is a combination of new members from the Primary, Legacy and Limited Settindown waitlists. The distribution of categories will allow the club to bring in budgeted initiation fees to support capital expenditures, but not add unnecessary pressure to the Club’s amenities.

Naturally, slowing down the acceptance of new members has caused our waitlists to grow steadily. Interest in joining Ansley remains extremely high and expected wait times have more than doubled over the past two years for our primary list and even more so for our legacy program. Once on the waitlist, a PNM may experience a wait of 5 years or longer, should nothing change, before being invited to join AGC. Membership attrition continues to be at its lowest rates in recent history, approximately 1/3 the attrition rate we experienced historically. While this is a great problem to have, many members and members in waiting have expressed frustration with the long wait times. As a committee, we are committed to keeping the club levels at an appropriate number that balances our economic needs as well as ensures a positive member experience. This is the number one concern of our committee, and it is a consistent area of our focus.

As we move forward, the Membership Committee will continue to do its part to make certain that our membership remains a collective group of outstanding individuals who support the culture that is Ansley Golf Club. We would like to express our gratitude to the 2023 Membership Committee, who have taken the time to serve and have worked together to make a difference: Simon Chio, Bill Kilborn, Rob Spencer, Jill Bernhardt, Olivene Makerson, Daniel Hanison, Renee Houle, Judy Marani, Paige Byers, Tracy Roberts, Cameron Eck, Craig McKesson, David Midkiff, Erin Yabroudy, Hedy Rubinger, and Sam Clay. Each have given many hours to the club at committee meetings, and we appreciate all their efforts this past year.

Also, a special thanks to Paula Savignano who makes every new member feel special. Her ability to connect and form fantastic relationships with all Prospective New Members is unmatched. She is an amazing person and a true asset to our club.

Mary Liles and Bennett Souter along with their dog Gus live in Collier Hills and are very excited to be joining Ansley. They met during their senior year at The University of Georgia (Go Dawgs!) and got married in June of 2022. Mary Liles, who is a teacher at The Schenck School, is a native Atlantan and has grown up going to Ansley with her family (Anna and Bryan Fiveash) since she was a child. Bennett is from Montezuma, GA and works at Truist Securities in its real estate group. Mary Liles and Bennett are looking forward to getting involved at Ansley, meeting new people, and enjoying all that Ansley has to offer.

The American Journey It’s about as cliché as it sounds. At age 12, I had a dream to come to America. I wanted to come over and play tennis for a top University and I wanted to live in Florida! That being said, I never actually thought about what I would have to do in order to make these dreams a reality.

I mean, after all, I had never been to America before and all I really knew was that it was the land of opportunity. It was the place you go to chase your dreams and it is where all the best Irish tennis players would go after their junior career. I grew up in Dublin, Ireland. I trained mostly with boys, and it was a very common thing for boys to do. They had generations of top tennis players who would go on and chase the American dream and they had generations behind them who would follow in their footsteps. For girls, it wasn’t as common. In fact, very few girls came over to play collegiate level tennis, but I knew that if the boys could do it, then I could too. Every time I stepped onto the tennis court, that was my goal. Always training with a purpose and America was it for me.

My initial journey over to the U.S. would follow suit as to what my whole process would be; difficult and complicated. Without having any knowledge about the college system in the U.S., I was recruited by coaches who came to watch me compete in tournaments all over Europe. Finally, all my hard work had paid off, as I was rewarded a scholarship to “THE” Ohio State University! I signed with the college and was set off on my American Journey in August of 2004.

Just weeks before I was set to leave, I got correspondence from the NCAA Clearing House communicating that I did not have the requirements to attend any college in the U.S. Back home in Ireland, the education system is very different. I was told that the subjects I was taking in school would not qualify into the U.S. system, even though I took the SAT and was doing college equivalent classes for the past 2 years. I was fearful my dream had come to a grinding halt. It took the Minister of Education of Ireland to write a letter to the Clearing House explaining the school curriculum in Ireland.

A persuasive letter that outlined the subjects that I was taking and how they were more than sufficient for a U.S. transfer. With many persuasive phone calls to the Minister, I was set to go…again! I arrived in America in January of 2005 to officially start playing college tennis at Ohio State University. It was one of the best 6

experiences of my life! All the hard work and the sacrifices I made were worth every single second.

After graduating college, the recession was in full force. All my friends at home were leaving Ireland and moving to Australia as there were no jobs to be had. It was during this time that an opportunity to move to Florida arose and I remembered that dream I had as a 12-year-old girl, so, off to the Sunshine State I went!! As time went on, I very much believed that I would return home to my family but as there were no

jobs, I continued to take an opportunity to work at one of the best tennis resorts of all time. After experiencing some time in Florida and creating some of the most amazing connections, I got a job at a tennis academy working with juniors and also started working for a Challenger tournament. I ended up running this Men’s Professional tournament for 12 years. It was here where my initial work visa journey would start.

This journey was a process within itself. The lawyer fees, the paperwork and the agonizing

waiting were just small examples of what was to come. After a while, another opportunity had come along to where I could be involved in college coaching. I started at a D3 college in Cleveland called Case Western, where I became the Assistant Coach and within 3 months, I was named Head Women’s Coach! I really felt like I was in my element when it came to

college coaching. After 2 years at Case, I started exploring bigger and better opportunities. I applied for a job that I didn’t initially think I would even get but wanted to at least try the interview process. So, I flew to the University of Penn for that interview and before I got back on the plane to Cleveland, I was offered the job. This was so unexpected, and I knew this wasn’t something I could just pass up, so I packed my bags, and I moved to Philadelphia without any hesitation. With this move, came more lawyer bills, more paperwork, and more hoops to jump through in order to transfer my visa to my new employer. For me, this was not an easy process, but I kept going anyway. It was within the first few months at Penn that we started breaking college records and I felt like I was in my dream job. One day while practicing with one of the players, I hit a backhand wrong, so wrong that I broke my back. Not only that but I dislocated my hip, herniated a disc and damaged a nerve all the way up to my neck.

This was the beginning of a very complicated, stressful journey that could potentially end my coaching career forever.

While in the hospital, doctors and nurses spoke to me about my situation stating that I would not be able to play ever again. As my heart began to sink into my stomach, I started thinking about my work visa and knowing if I did not receive a paycheck for 60 days, I would lose my status. It wasn’t too much longer that I received an even bigger devastation, I had lost my job. At this point, I knew I needed to notify my lawyer but because of the time crunch, I did not have very many options. This was the beginning of my first deportation journey.

I had to jump through many hoops in order to make my way back to Florida and even bigger hoops to find a sponsor from a job that I had left initially before moving to Philadelphia.

While working there, I wasn’t making much money, if any at all. My employer was very clear and stated he could sponsor me but nothing more. Which means I had to work even harder working multiple jobs just to get by. I went to visit a friend in Atlanta for a weekend when I randomly ran into an old college teammate who was able to help me out “under the table”. I tried to move my work visa over, but again, it was a very lengthy, complicated, expensive process.

While my visa was in a “pending” status, I was not allowed to work or leave the country, which means, I was back to square one. There

were many times when I wanted to quit on this process, but I had come so far, and I was way too stubborn to throw in the towel. I was so close, or so I thought, to getting my green card and I had sacrificed too much to give up. Little did I know that my “pending” status would take 3 years. I was not able to go home and see my family and that was definitely the most difficult thing for me. Fast forward a few years, my status was finally approved! I received my green card, which meant I not only could go home to see my family, but I could travel back and forth with no obstacles to jump through. To say I was ecstatic would be an understatement.

I wasted no time; I jumped on a plane back to Dublin to see my mom. So many years had gone by, and I hadn’t been home for so long. I embraced my loved ones as soon as I could, but it seemed that I came home to some devastating news about my mom. She wasn’t her usual self over Christmas and so she went and did some tests and it turned out that she had been diagnosed with lung cancer in January. It wasn’t long after that I lost her in May. Getting over all the time that I missed out on with her is still a process for me. I made the commitment to her to see this journey out and to do whatever it took to get my citizenship, so I can make this whole journey worth it.

The process of becoming a U.S. Citizen has been the most stressful, soul crushing, expensive, lengthy process that I have ever been through in my life but there is nothing that I am more proud of. A lot of blood, sweat, money and tears went into this, but I kept going, I stuck with it, and I MADE IT. America has given me so much. There are not many places in the world who offer the same opportunities. Tennis is not just a sport to me, it’s something that has mapped my life and is the reason why I am here today. I owe so much to this sport. I am beyond proud to be Irish and I am truly grateful to now be part of this wonderful country.

There were many many times that I thought that I could not finish this process. From having to work dead end jobs just to survive, to almost getting deported twice, to the anxiety of not knowing if I was coming or going, to the endless paperwork and lawyer bills, to missing out on precious time with family. I can now say with my head held high : Mom, this one is for you.

Thank you so much to Ansley for all the love and support, it means everything to me.

Compete in Ansley’s 4th annual Triathlon!

Masters Swimming The Masters Social will be held on December 19 from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. in the 1912 Grill. If you participated in master’s, please come out for a small social event and to say thank you to your coach!

Sporting Clays With a total of seven clubs partaking, this year's annual Country Club Sporting Clays Team Challenge is sure to be one for the books. The Atlanta Athletic Club, Ansley Golf Club, Capital City Club, Druid Hills Golf Club, Cherokee Town & Country Club, and the Piedmont Driving Club will gather at Burge Plantation for a friendly and spirited team competition.

The top ten shooting rounds for each club will be added together and used to determine the Country Club Team Championship. This will be a 100-target shoot over 15 stations.

Awards will be presented to the top 5 overall shooters and to the top 10 scorers of the Championship Team.

Indoors or out! Must use a fitness tracker or take a photo of the display screen on the rower, bike, treadmill that is used for proof of distance and speed.

Members can compete as an individual or as a relay team of three. All legs of the event, including relay must be completed on the same day, one event after another. Transition times between events should be no longer than 10-15 mins and is on the honor system. Relay teams can do the events at the same time and must be on the same day. All participants will be recognized in the March AnsleyGram as well as receive a fun shirt. Prizes will be awarded to the top in each category as well as each division. Members can submit completed total times multiple times during the month of January, submission deadline is at 5 p.m. on January 31.

Kidz Korner Reminders

For the month of November, we will have three dinners and a movie and five in the month of December. Children can wear their pajamas and bring sleeping bags or blankets and pillows to use during the movie. Make your reservations early because these nights fill up quickly.

Welcome back to our annual Stuffed Animal Drive! Tweens are going to the Atlanta Gladiators Game for their stuffed animal toss. We will be collecting new or slightly used stuffed animals November 1 – December 15 to take to the game. The donation boxes will be located outside of the Ansley Room, by the receptionist’s desk, and in the Shark’s Den. It is a great opportunity to clean out some stuffed animals before the holidays. The first time the gladiators score, we will toss the stuffed animals on the ice. They collect them for the police officers and firefighters to use when they respond to calls with children. We will be meeting at the Shark’s Den at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, December 16 and returning to Ansley at 10:45 p.m.

Join us for the Ansley Ski Trip in Cataloochee, NC. We are leaving on Friday, January 5 at 4:30 p.m. on a charter bus. We are staying in the Comfort Inn of Maggie Valley where the children will have the opportunity to ski from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Saturday & Sunday. We will return to Ansley Golf Club around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 7. Participants will need to bring money for 3 Dinners & 2 Lunches.

Welcome back to our annual Stuffed Animal Drive! Tweens are going to the Atlanta Gladiators Game for their stuffed animal toss. We will be collecting new or slightly used stuffed animals November 1 – December 15 to take to the game. The donation boxes will be located outside of the Ansley Room, by the receptionist’s desk, and in the Shark’s Den. It is a great opportunity to clean out some stuffed animals before the holidays. The first time the gladiators score, we will toss the stuffed animals on the ice. They collect them for the police officers and firefighters to use when they respond to calls with children. We will be meeting at the Shark’s Den at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, December 16 and returning to Ansley at 10:45 p.m.
