A NOTE FROM STEVE MALOOF & COURTNEY YOUNG

GROUNDS CHAIRMAN AND DIRECTOR OF AGRONOMY

Dear Ansley Members,

We all remember the excitement and anticipation that comes with wrapped gifts. Major capital projects at the club elicit the same feelings. The big package under this year’s tree is the Settindown renovation. When we open the course, it will follow years of planning and a year of construction. If you have been on one of the Settindown tours, you got a glimpse of the generational upgrades to the course. For those that haven’t peeked, the new Settindown will amaze you.

The first and maybe most memorable change is how Tyler Rae reimagined the bunkering to add visual drama and strategic value. While we have a few less bunkers, they are all bigger with flashed sand and lacy edges. Everyone that looks at the course thinks about how they will play it, but thought was given to how the whole membership would enjoy it. We introduced adjustments to produce a course that is easier from the forward tees but every bit as challenging from the tips on almost every hole. Some changes are less seen but vital. The course needed new irrigation, drainage, greens, and grass. We are getting all of those in this renovation.

Beyond the Settindown renovation, we have a few other projects in the works. After studying numerous alternatives for the Turfcare site that had extensive fire damage in September of 2023, the club decided to restore the damaged half of the building without major improvements. This was the surest, least expensive, and quickest way to restore operational facilities to our Grounds and Facilities Maintenance teams. They have not had a fully functioning building for almost 2 years. The restoration work will begin this summer and end in early fall.

While we did not want to undertake projects on the Ansley Course when Settindown was closed, we were busy planning for the future needs of the home course. One project we are reviewing is the development of better forward tees. Billy Fuller has helped us examine the location of the red and white tees. We developed a plan to adjust many of these forward tees to improve the playability of the course for a growing segment of our golfing membership. Additionally, we know the bunkers are getting harder to climb out of and are working on plans to address those.

We are also working on plans to improve the Ansley Course practice experience. Old courses like ours were not typically designed to include practice areas. We shoehorned in a compromise that has served us well for many years but has shortcomings. New technologies in golf ball simulation and feedback have started to change practice areas. We are examining plans to incorporate new tech, increase the number of hitting stations, and provide bigger and better short-game area to help us warm up and improve our scores. We will share these plans as they develop.

Beyond all the goodies under our tree, we do need to have a little talk about the naughty or nice thing. We need to take better care of our courses!  There are many of us that are not doing our part when it comes to this, and you know who you are (and so do we).  If you are in a bunker, rake the bunker….if you make a pitchmark on the green, fix the pitchmark and if you make a divot in the fairway, fill it will sand!   Please leave the course better than you find it. These are all simple things to do, and it is respectful to the folks playing behind you.  Be nice……the Santas are watching.

Kindest Regards,

Welcome New Members

Jenelle and Sahile Chawla have called Atlanta home for the past twenty years. Jenelle was born in Ohio, split most of her childhood between Atlanta and Clear Water FL, went to Florida State University and is Associate Director of marketing and communication at Accenture. Sahile was born and raised in New Delhi, India came to Atlanta for his MBA at Georgia State University and currently serves as Area Vice President of sales for NCR Voyix. Sahile finds every excuse to get a round of golf in while Jenelle’s more of a tennis buff. When not doing either of those activities their evenings revolve around playtime with their rescue dog. They share a passion for travel, exploring the world through great food & wine and are really looking forward to enjoying all things Ansley.

Meet the Ziznewskis—Dan, his wife Jackie, and their three kids, Ava (4), Cooper (3), and Ella (6m), are excited to join the Ansley community. Dan, a New Jersey native, moved to Atlanta twelve years ago for graduate school at Emory, where he met Jackie on the Chattahoochee River shortly after finishing his MBA. They've been married for almost eight years. Dan leads Investor Relations at Resurgens Technology Partners, a local private equity firm focused on investing in software companies, and Jackie works in Product Marketing at Fullstory, an Atlanta-based behavioral data company. Both were college athletes—Dan played varsity soccer at Bucknell University, and Jackie was a cheerleader at UGA. The Ziznewskis look forward to all of the activities Ansley has to offer, and introducing golf, tennis, and swim to our children at an early age!

S&S Sharpening

Having the right tools in your kitchen can make all the difference in your culinary journey. Among the most essential tools for any chef or home cook are knives. However, proper knife sharpening is key when it comes to preparing food. Sharp knives allow us to make clean cuts through ingredients, preserving their quality and appearance, which is particularly important for delicate items such as herbs and vegetables.

Executive Chef, Trae Shriner, has found the best of the best when it comes to sharpening at S&S. Take a peek at the price sheet below and contact Trae, tshriner@ ansleygc.org, to set up an appointment or if you have any questions.

The Women’s Introduction to Golf Program is a wonderful opportunity for beginners and high-handicapped students to improve their games very quickly. The emphasis is on FUN.

Operation 36 starts each hole from 25 yards, playing 9-holes for a target score of 36 from that distance. After successfully achieving the goal, the distance of each hole increases to 50 yards, 100 yards, 150 yards, 200 yards, then back to the Red Tees at Ansley after shooting 36 at each level.

ALGA Calendar

Please reference the ALGA calendar on the Ansley App or the Ansley Website for all ALGA Calendar Events.

You can register for any ALGA event on the Ansley App by going to GOLF --> ALGA --> Special Events and then scroll to find the event in which you are interested. Most registrations open 30 days prior to the scheduled event.

Etiquette Corner

Maintain the course conditions.

Make sure you are replacing your divots with either the turf you misplaced, or the sand found on your pushcart or golf cart. If you are walking, ask for a small bottle of sand so that you have the ability to fill your divots.

ALGA Play Away at Druid Hills Golf Club

Pace of play!

What is it, and why is it important? Pace of play is the allotted time to play 9 and 18 holes of golf. Each course is slightly different, but for Ansley, 9 holes should take no longer than two hours to complete, and four hours for 18-holes. To ensure an on-time round, always remember to gather information before it is your turn to hit the ball. For example, arriving at your ball, measuring the distance, picking a club and taking practice swings can happen before it is your turn as long as you are not directly in front of the person hitting. This will speed up play in a stress-free way! Remember, your pace is not dictated on what is happening behind you, it is about keeping up with the group in front of you.

Jacob Tilton of Ansley Golf Club wins the 91st Yamaha Atlanta Open

Sandy Springs, GA — Jacob Tilton, PGA of America Instructor at Ansley Golf Club, claimed his first Georgia PGA Section major championship, capturing a dominant victory at the 91st Yamaha Atlanta Open presented by Audi Atlanta. The prestigious event took place at Cherokee Town & Country Club in Sandy Springs, where Tilton’s exceptional rounds of 65 and 67 earned him a commanding 12-under-par total of 132, securing a six-stroke triumph.

Entering the final round with a two-shot advantage over 2024 Georgia PGA Player of the Year Francisco Bide, PGA Head Professional at Capital City Club, and highly regarded amateur Matt Hayes, also of Ansley Golf Club, Jacob maintained a steady hand throughout the day. With eight players within four shots of the lead, the final round promised intense competition, but Jacob methodically extended his lead, particularly during the back nine.

A solid front nine helped Jacob push his advantage to three shots by the turn. From there, he pulled away with an impressive 4-under-par 32 on the back nine, featuring birdies on five of the last seven holes. His lone bogey came on the challenging par3 11th, but he quickly regained his momentum to close out the round in commanding fashion.

This victory not only marks a significant milestone in Tilton’s career but also reinforces his position as one of the top teaching and playing professionals in the region. With this win, Jacob joins a prestigious list of past champions and cements his place among the best in Georgia’s golf community. Please join us in congratulating Jacob on the victory as we celebrate his on-course successes!
