A LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE:
THE
INSPIRING HISTORY OF THE ANSLEY SHARKS SWIM TEAM
Ansley Golf Club has flourished over the past decade, welcoming more than 500 new members. With the addition of several young families to the Ansley community, we wanted to reintroduce our growing membership to one of our most celebrated legacies: the Ansley Sharks swim team. The Ansley Sharks have long been a time-honored tradition and a point of pride for the Ansley community. More than just a summer activity, the team represents a legacy of camaraderie, excellence, and community spirit that has brought generations of families together.
BEGINNINGS AND EARLY MILESTONES
Ansley’s aquatic legacy dates back to 1935 when the club’s first pool was constructed, though it wasn’t until 1948 that a regulation-length pool was added. The pool quickly became a hub of activity, with over 13,000 visitors in 1953 alone. Interclub meets in those early days weren’t so different from today, complete with poolside food service offering soft drinks and sandwiches. By 1955, Ansley swimmers were already making waves, with 14 members qualifying for the prestigious Havalanta Swimming Games—more than any other club in the city.
The Havalanta Swimming Games were created by Carlos Enrique deCubas, a renowned swimming coach and Cuban-American immigrant who fled to the United States during Fidel Castro’s rise to power. Settling in Georgia, deCubas left an indelible mark on the swimming and diving community, coaching at institutions such as Ansley Golf Club and Georgia Tech and nurturing elite athletes. The International Havalanta Fiesta, as it was originally known, was deCubas’ vision of blending camaraderie, celebration, and competition. Reflecting his passion for inclusivity and excellence, the event became a hallmark of aquatic sports in Georgia. His contributions were later honored with his induction into the Georgia Aquatic Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy and the enduring spirit of the Havalanta Games. These milestones laid the foundation for Ansley’s swim culture, which continues to thrive today.
Although the Ansley swim team was founded in 1958, it shuttered before making a triumphant return in 1971 as the Piranhas. Under the leadership of Director John Hewitt, Head of Instruction Anne Bennett, and Swim Coach David Barrales, the team began rebuilding its competitive program. That first year, the Piranhas traveled to St. Simons to participate in the Golden Isles Invitational, where two team members won gold, and several others

placed in their events. Barrales also introduced the first Ansley Relays meet, where the Piranhas competed against four other Atlanta clubs, emerging victorious and cementing their place in the local swim community.
In 1986, the team transitioned under the leadership of Coach Liz Tucker, adopting the name Ansley Sharks, affectionately known as “Club Shark.” This new era marked the beginning of a legacy of camaraderie and competitive excellence that continues to define the Sharks today. 1988 was a watershed year for the Sharks. With Kathy Hopkins as Head Coach and Beau Shippen as Assistant Coach, the team clinched its first championship title at the Atlanta Athletic Club. This historic achievement was accompanied by the breaking of 31 club records and 14 more at the championship meet, showcasing the dedication and grit of Ansley’s swimmers.
GROWTH AND TRADITIONS
The Sharks’ momentum continued into 1989 under Denise Jordan, who brought an Olympic touch to the pool by enlisting Gold Medalist David Larson as her assis -

tant. With over 300 swimmers that year, Denise emphasized personal improvement, reminding swimmers, “You may not be able to beat the person next to you, but you can always beat yourself.” Her innovative coaching and focus on community brought enduring traditions like post-meet celebrations at Fellini’s, crazy hat and sock practices, and the cherished record board by the diving well. Denise’s passion for technique and her individualized approach drove the Sharks to 12 straight Country Club Championships and undefeated regular seasons from 1989–2000. The Sharks went on to win 10 additional league championships from 2001–2006, 2010–2012, and 2016.
A FAMILY AFFAIR
The Sharks’ legacy extends beyond the pool, creating lifelong bonds among families and friends. Leslie Tedder (née Bumgarner), who swam from 1986 to 1991, recalls how the team became a family tradition. All five of her siblings swam for Ansley, and today, her three children carry on the legacy. “The Sharks were a family thing,” she says, highlighting how the team forged friendships that lasted a lifetime.

For Justin Boller, a team member in the 1980s and former Ansley Athletics Chair, Ansley was “the little club” competing against powerhouses like the Atlanta Athletic Club. Despite this, the Sharks built a reputation for excellence, going on undefeated streaks and breaking records. Justin’s fond memories include the camaraderie of summer meets, the thrill of heat ribbons, and even boxed Jello shared poolside with teammates. His time with the Sharks sparked a lifelong love for swimming, leading him to participate in Ansley’s Masters swimming program. That passion also extended to his family—his daughters, Mary Catherine and Charlotte, are dedicated year-round swimmers, carrying forward the values and skills fostered by their father’s experience with the Sharks.
For many, the Sharks weren’t just a team; they were a summer social group. The pool became a hub of connection and fun, where kids bonded with “summer friends” outside of their school circles. Swimmers would head to practice in the morning, spend the day at the pool, and return for afternoon practice, creating a vibrant community where friendships flourished in and out of the water.
A LASTING LEGACY
Through the years, the Ansley Sharks have remained more than just a swim team. They represent a community where swimmers develop life skills, build lasting friendships, and experience the joy of achieving personal and collective goals. From the high-energy cheers of parents to the inspiring guidance of coaches, the Sharks continue to embody the spirit of fun, inclusivity, and excellence.
As the Sharks dive into future seasons, their rich history serves as a reminder of what can be achieved through teamwork, dedication, and a shared love for the sport. More to come in the March Ansley Gram, where we’ll unveil our exciting plans to honor and revive the beloved traditions of the Ansley Sharks! And mark your calendars—registration for the 2025 Ansley Sharks opens January 15, 2025.

S&S Sharpening
Having the right tools in your kitchen can make all the difference in your culinary journey. Among the most essential tools for any chef or home cook are knives. However, proper knife sharpening is key when it comes to preparing food. Sharp knives allow us to make clean cuts through ingredients, preserving their quality and appearance, which is particularly important for delicate items such as herbs and vegetables.
Executive Chef, Trae Shriner, has found the best of the best when it comes to sharpening at S&S. Take a peek at the price sheet below and contact Trae, tshriner@ansleygc.org, to set up an appointment or if you have any questions.

Ansley Women Together:
"When we feel confident in our appearance, we feel empowered to engage with others."
Our Ansley women kicked off their holiday season last year with a fantastic event featuring WOO! Cosmetics and Trish McAvoy make-up artists. Over ninety women gathered for an inspiring event focused on personal empowerme0nt and self-presentation. The unique event offered our women members, and their guests, the opportunity to mingle, enjoy delicious food and participate in meaningful discussions about how to present ourselves in personal and professional spaces.
Professional makeup artists shared tips on enhancing natural beauty and achieving polished looks suitable for different occasions. The event was about building confidence and aligning outward presentation with personal and professional aspirations.
For those who missed it, the organizers of Ansley Women Together are busy planning future events to continue fostering growth and confidence among women at the Club. Stay tuned for our next event in February, where we will hear from our fellow members and community leaders about generosity and how when we open our hearts to others, we can have a profound and meaningful impact on the women and children in our community.

• Do you know the difference in the carry distance and total distance of your clubs?
• Do you have multiple clubs that you hit the same distance in your bag?
• 3-5 yards appears insignificant, but 9-15 feet short, long, left, or right can be the difference in birdie or double bogey during each round.
Spend one-hour at Settindown in the Learning Center hitting four to six shots with each club in your bag, obtaining genuine carry distance, total distance, and much more.
Trackman launch monitor measures and displays the full trajectory of any shot, from 6-foot pitches to 400-yard drives, pinpointing the landing position with an accuracy of 1½ feet at 160 yards. It also maps the shot's 3D trajectory in real time, together with all impact and launch information.
The radar systems track Club Path and Face Angle to Swing Direction and Low Point. Furthermore, the Full Ball Flight - from Launch to Land Angle; including Spin Rate and Curvature.

ALGA Play-Away Days: Fun “Off-Campus”
Pelican Bay in Newport Coast, CA – October 27
ALGA’s own Laura Brightwell welcomed 24 ALGA members to sunny southern California at the end of October. Laura lives in both Newport and Atlanta, so she was the perfect planner for this trip. She arranged two days of golf at Pelican Hill’s majestic North and South courses along the Pacific Ocean. Laura welcomed the ALGA group to her home on the first evening and treated everyone to a boat tour of Balboa Island. After the sunset tour, the ladies enjoyed a wonderful meal in Laura’s beautiful home. The following days of golf provided lots of fun, sunshine and great meals at Pelican Hill. Laura arranged closest to the hole contest on two Par 3’s on each day, with the winners being Amy Medendorp, Kathy Ryan, Marci Spivey and Barbara Zacks. It was a memorable trip, and all agreed that it was incredibly special. Lovely memories, great golf and wonderful friends . . . what’s not to love! A HUGE THANKS to Laura for opening her home and hosting such a great event.
Waterfall Club, Rabun, GA - October 16
On a beautiful fall day with some chilly temps, 21 ALGA members enjoyed a day outing at Waterfall Club in Clayton, GA. Denise Miller and Linda Davis hosted the group and arranged a great outing for their fellow ALGA members, complete with stunning mountain views and water vistas of Lake Burton. The course was challenging but fun and the altitude changes were really something! Denise and Linda plan to arrange another outing next summer, and you won’t want to miss out! Clayton, GA is a cute little town, with good shopping and restaurants to explore if you want to make an overnight summer getaway out of it! THANK YOU to both Linda & Denise for the wonderful time had by all!
Intown Golf Club in Buckhead – November 19
Kathy Ryan and Lee Birdsong hosted 14 ALGA members at trendy Intown Golf Club, which offers a first-class private club experience wrapped around golf bays featuring trackman golf technology. Participants competed closest to the pin shots and enjoyed cocktails and appetizers. Another event is planned for January 28.

Alliance Theatre
“Award-winning playwright Idris Goodwin brings William Steig’s tale of wit, wisdom, and whimsy to the stage with an eye-popping blend of live-action, puppetry, music, and rhyme. Despite the sign outside stating that they do not treat predators, Doctor De Soto and Mrs. De Soto take pity on a suffering fox with a rotten tooth. But once he opens his jaws and they must step inside, they begin to rethink their decision. Full of excitement and laughter, this modern-day fable proves that event the smallest creates can make a big difference with kindness and little quick thinking.”
