A NOTE FROM DAVID BATTLE

Welcome to an exciting summer at Ansley Golf Club. This year marks the 31st anniversary of the 2024 “Make A Difference” Ansley Charity Pro Am. This signature philanthropic event is set for August 14-18. Due to the support of Ansley members, this event has evolved to become the premier charity pro-am in Georgia. Whether you are a player or patron, we hope you and your family participate. If you are not playing in one of the events- no problem. Every member is welcome to come out to watch the events as well as attend the Saturday night auction and Gala!

This year we support four worthy charities:

Goizueta Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC) Established in 2005, this organization is dedicated to advancing research and education on Alzheimer’s disease and various related forms of cognitive impairment as a vital component of the National Institutes of Health-supported network of Alzheimer’s research centers, and the only one in Georgia, The ADRC’s objectives include discovery of risk factors for the disease, production of new diagnostics, new therapieswith the goal of disease prevention.

Chris 180 Founded in 1981 Chris 180 provides life-changing trauma-informed behavioral health services and wraparound support to children, adults, and families to help them change the direction of their lives. Chris 180 has worked with more than 200,000 in need to build resilience and heal from trauma, while becoming a well-respected leader in child welfare and a leader in supporting underserved and traumatized communities across Metro Atlanta

Operation Feed Atlanta A dedicated, no redtape resource to the Atlanta school community as a partner in the fight to overcome food insecurity. By working directly with school counselors, administrators and community leaders, the goal is to never have a request for food turned down. They have a school snack bag program, holiday meals programs and a championed food pantry initiative. It is 100% volunteer run with the Board of Directors’ commitment to reach results needed for the health of the community.

Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation For over 20 years, SBTF has supported critical,

innovative research and education programs throughout the Southeast to battle brain tumors.

I want to thank our Pro-Am chairs, Andrea Bradley and Hallie and John Olsen who have worked hard with Matt to put all aspects of this event in place along with keeping communications with the foundations we are supporting.

The Pro-Am is bigger and better this year. We are kicking it off with our Pro Am pickleball competition which will be held on August 15 at the Painted Pickle. Next up, includes competition in men’s and ladies’ Pro-Am tennis and golf (18 holes for both women and men), and a Friday swim party. For the second year, we are offering a competition in Clay Shooting as well. The Saturday night Gala will feature a “Hippies to Yuppies” theme which should bring out some one-of-a-kind outfits. The party includes a great band, delicious food, open bars and a silent auction. Please join in for a wonderful time for Ansley members while “Making A Difference” to the charities we are supporting.

The Ansley tennis program is busier than ever. Tennis participation is up. In addition to the current number of women’s league teams, we are adding one additional Sunday team and 1 or 2 Thursday teams in the fall. Also, our men’s in house league is growing and involves all levels of doubles play. Currently we have four mixed teams and 4-6 junior league teams and junior in house play in the spring and fall. The talented pros at Ansley have all members reaching new skill levels and enjoying the camaraderie and friendship of their Ansley teammates. On the maintenance side, our courts have been resurfaced and are maintained to the highest standards.

In addition to tennis, our pickleball program has continued to expand. With the addition of Gavin Nickerson, our pickleball pro and champion in his own right, the program continues to bring new members to pickleball. We have the ladies league play, mixed doubles play, new ALTA pickleball play and many social mixed, ladies and men play throughout the week. Also, for the members wanting to better their skills in pickleball, we offer lessons at all skill levels to get you ready to compete. Corporate pickleball

outings have become popular and we have the Men’s and Ladies Pickleball Championships each year. Let me invite all that have not tried the sport to give it a go. It is a whole lot of fun!

The goal of the tennis program is to make sure each member that participates has a great experience each time they come out to play. We would not be able to achieve this level of success without the strong efforts of the Pros and staff!

I want to recognize the tennis staff and ask you to please let them know your appreciation for their continued efforts to make each member’s experience so enjoyable. The staff is as follows:

Matt Grayson- Director of Racquet Sports and Athletics- Matt is a member of the Directors Round table under the prestigious Certified Executive Sports Program. This is a group that focuses on industry trends, and he is asked to speak at functions to address the many issues club managers face in the racquet industry. Keeping Up on the Court

Diving Deeper into the history of Pickleball

The history of pickleball is a thrilling journey that takes us back to the summer of 1965.

A game invented in the backyard of Joel Pritchard's home, with two of his friends, Bill Bell & Barney McCallum, as a way to pass time.

It was a boring summer day when the first game of pickleball was enjoyed on an old badminton court at the Pritchard's property. They began by playing with spare ping-pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball. With these bits and pieces lying around, a brand-new game was born.

As time progressed, a set of rules started to develop. At first, the net was set at badminton's regulation height of 60", but the group found that the wiffle ball bounced well on their asphalt court, so they lowered it down to 36". At this point, there weren't many rules to their game so during the following weekend, Pritchard and Bell introduced their new creation to another family friend named McCullum. From there, with heavy inspiration from badminton, the three gentlemen created new rules with the sole purpose of family play and accessibility in mind.

It wasn't too long after that Pritchard constructed the first, permanent pickleball court in the backyard of Bob O'Brian, who was his neighbor and close family friend. The decision to build a dedicated and permanent court further cemented their homemade game into a loveable pastime.

Fast-forward to the year 1967, and the first known pickleball tournament was held in Tukwila, Washington. Over the next decade, the sport was gaining some popularity, and by 1990, pickleball was being played in all 50 states. While pickleball was still relatively unknown at the time, this was an important milestone in pickleball's history. In 2016, the first US Open Pickleball Championships were held in Naples, Florida, with the first nationally televised broadcast. The broadcast helped to showcase the best players in the world at the time, which played a large role in the development of the professional pickleball tours that we see today.

Currently, pickleball continues to be the fastest growing sport in America, having grown 51.8% from the year 2022 to 2023. Overall, there is a bright future for pickleball as more players from around the world begin to play, and there are even talks that it could one day become an Olympic sport!

Our Pickleball professional, Gavin Nickerson discovered the sport with his dad in 2017 at his local courts back in Hartland, Michigan. Quickly growing to love the activity, Gavin started to play more and more, learning and perfecting his skills. In 2018, he started entering tournaments, competing, and soon after started teaching. His passion runs deeper than just playing the sport, he also loves coaching players of all skill levels to improve their game.

Make sure to schedule your lessons, clinics, and workshops with Gavin, gnickerson@ansleygc.org if you or your friends want to hone your skills in the sport of pickleball.

Settindown Golf Course Master Plan

Featuring Hole #9

This hole will also feel very similar to the current version but will have a few fundamental changes that will give it a big boost. First, the tees shift left and play out from a lower position, increasing the angle of the dogleg, while also making it more interesting playing from the current Hole #8 green location. Increased distance from the gold tee and a new black tee will give this par 4 some extra bite for those players. The fairway does get a bit wider and trees on both sides will be selectively removed to open up the playing corridor to increase sunlight and overall turf health, which has always been a challenge on this hole. Two bunkers - one on the left side and one far right - will meet the golfer in the tee shot landing area. They will be offset and not equidistant from the teeing grounds, thus there are options for most golfers to navigate their way around these hazards depending on the tee and skill level of the player. At the green, we really like the overall size, shape and height of the current green site and will endeavor to keep as many of these characteristics as possible. We will soften the hillside a bit on the right of the golf hole and better tie it into the green site to provide a more natural look and feel and also allow for more balls to be played in along the right approach, potentially kicking down and onto the green. Removal of the pond behind the green will create new recovery shot options from that closely mown swale.

Each racquet will be assigned a QR code that will have all the racquet, string and grip info that is associated with that racquet. When you use our services here at Ansley, you will receive text messages letting you know when the racquet is being worked on and when it is ready to be picked up. The only info needed in order to use this program is your cell phone number. All racquets strung moving forward will have the Ansley logo QR code placed on them so you can take advantage of this free service.
