Bosch empowers you to use video data to do far more for your business than security alone. This includes identifying patterns in customer activity, improving sales by recognizing retail ‘hot spots,’ and identifying consumer ‘road blocks’ to optimize your store layout and improve the customer experience. With built-in video analytics for the IP 4000 series cameras and above, the possibilities and potential within and beyond security are unlimited.

Q&A: James Henderson, president & COO, Avigilon

During ISC West, SP&T News spoke with James Henderson, president, Avigilon – our first interview with the company since its recent acquisition by Motorola Solutions in a deal valued at approximately US$1 billion.

SP&T: What can you tell us about how the two companies are coming together?

JH: Obviously it’s early stages right now, but when you look at the acquisition and the two companies, the bottom line is it’s all about growth and opportunity on both sides. With Avigilon, we’ll be able to bring our video [and] artificial intelligence analytics to the

ever-evolving public safety workflow environment. Also Avigilon is very strong on the commercial side and we’ll be able to help Motorola expand their presence on the commercial side as well. Longer term, the vision of the two companies is really the same — which is why this is such a great partnering.

SP&T: Clearly the company is evolving. Is Avigilon still a security company?

JH: Avigilon is a solutions company. As we continue to evolve, we are looking at developing solutions that serve realworld problems. You’re going to see our company evolve along that line. Primarily, today, yes, we focused on the security segment… down the road, who knows? You may see us expand into other areas as well.

SP&T: What has changed for you as a result of the acquisition?

JH: At the end of the day, my role hasn’t changed, except I have a great new partner who’s going to help us do things even faster.

Cyber panel: compliance, Cloud and biometrics

Cybersecurity: a topic never too far away from the minds of most security professionals. A group of six company leaders — Rick Carruthers, Galaxy Control; Stuart Rawling, Pelco; Simon Morgan, SureView Systems; Budd Broomhead, ViaKoo; James West, Manything; Shiraz Kapadia, Invixium; Kurt Meason, Boon Edam — met during ISC West to discuss the continuing conundrum.

Always consider your suppliers, offered Carruthers. Is your access control vendor doing business with government? That’s a good sign they have attained a certain level of compliance and may have gone through a risk management framework. Look for companies that meet different levels of compliance, added Morgan. He said Sureview attained PCI (Payment Card Industry) compliance, even though it doesn’t manage credit cards. “Ask your vendors what they’re doing against some of these published standards,” he said.

Also be aware that business in any venue, cyber or otherwise, is going to inherently carry some risk. “I think it’s a big mistake to equate Cloud with risk. Everything is risky ... it’s just about managing that risk,” said Rawling, who also serves on ONVIF’s steering committee.

He cautioned that breaches are a reality, even an inevitability. “Assume you’re going to fail. You going to have a breach.”

One method to mitigate against potential breaches is don’t

store data you don’t need, he added — or store it on a device not connected to a network.

Both Kapadia and Meason, who offer access control solutions, encouraged users to consider that a locked door to a data centre facility may not be enough. To prevent breaches that occur as a result of insider threat or social engineering (a hacker who is able to physically access a premises through means of persuasion), use multi-factor authentication and biometric identification. “There is no ‘Cloud’… there’s a door that’s protecting a physical server,” offered Kapadia.

ArtificialReplicating the real

intelligence (as opposed to the “real” kind) was probably the most dominant theme at ISC West this year, particularly if you scanned the show floor and took note of all the marketing banners and slogans.

Last year, after the 2017 show, I wrote about the potential uses for AI and how security vendors were positioning themselves (and their

customers) to take advantage of it. This year, it seems, it’s here.

AI is memorable as a marketing term. It’s simple and it conveys a lot of meaning. It’s replete with science-fiction references — only it’s not so fictional any more.

Sergey Brin, president of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, remarked in

Publisher Peter Young pyoung@annexbusinessmedia.com

Assistant Editor Ellen Cools ecools@annexbusinessmedia.com

an open letter to investors published on the Alphabet website how AI has led to progress at Google and YouTube, including language translation and the ability to “understand images” in Google Photos.

Brin also noted that AI should be treated with respect and caution, raising questions about its impact on crucial human factors like employment. “There is serious thought and research going into all of these issues,” he said.

In the security world, these questions should be posed as well. I bristle slightly when I hear about “guard replacement technology,” although some vendors are taking a different approach, describing new tools as “guard augmentation,” enabling them to do their jobs more efficiently. At the moment, I tend to think of AI as a convenient catch-all term to describe tasks that relate to automated object or pattern recognition, such as using cameras to count cars or look for individuals wearing baseball caps and carrying duffel bags. The intelligence is in the software, but I don’t believe it’s

thinking for itself yet.

Whether the term AI is truly applicable or not, there is serious buzz around the industry. According to the Security Industry Association, traffic on the ISC West show floor increased by six per cent this year over the previous. Judging by the crowds I jostled through, it was at least that much.

I think AI as a marketing message will probably quieten down in a year or two as the security industry gets a better handle on what’s possible and what’s not. There’s sometimes a tendency to over-promise on performance (think back to the initial boom in analytics) followed by a correction over time as the technology catches up to expectations.

At the moment, AI is often conflated with other buzzworthy phrases like Internet of Things, big data and machine learning, it’s real meaning sometimes lost. But what it does represent is a step forward in technical development and a desire to take the industry in new directions. Whatever the terminology, that’s real.

INNOVATION AT ISC WEST

Annual security industry trade show ISC West was held in Las Vegas, April 11-13. The event, sponsored by the Security Industry Association (SIA), hosted more than 1,000 manufacturers and was expected to draw approximately 30,000 industry professionals.

Steve Reinharz, founder and CEO of RAD, shows off the company’s Security Control and Observation Tower (SCOT) technology.

James Rothstein, senior vice-president, global security, Anixter, talks with media about the company’s unification and the phase-out of Tri-Ed Distribution and Clark branding.

ASSA ABLOY’s press conference covered a lot of ground, including home innovation, Cloud solutions, K-12 security, growth of mobile credentials for campus and more.

The International Expo, part of ISC West, showcased security technology solutions from Asia.

ISC West offered a larger exhibit area this year, adding 4,000 sq. ft. over last year.

The Connected Home area housed technology including lighting, thermostats, entertainment systems, appliances and security devices.

The Unmanned Security Expo returned for a second year with drones and robot technology.
“I knew you had to be ready to come to the Olympics, which is ISC West.”
— Shiraz Kapadia, Invixium

Check out these Canadian exhibitors new to ISC West

ISC West is an international showcase for security products, technology and services, drawing exhibitors from all over the world. More and more, Canadian companies see the value of exhibiting at the show. SP&T News spoke with four Canadian companies at ISC West to learn more about the products they are showcasing, and their thoughts on the show.

INVIXIUM MARKHAM, ONT.

Markham, Ont.-based Invixium is technically a first-time exhibitor at ISC West, but the company’s president is definitely a veteran, with more than 15 shows to his credit.

Shiraz Kapadia was previously the COO at Bioscrypt, which was acquired by L-1 Identity Solutions in 2008. He created Invixium, a biometrics solutions company, in 2012.

One of the major reasons Invixium waited until now to make its ISC West debut is its geographic focus. The company has targeted the Middle East and Africa as its major customer markets and only recently turned its attention to North America. At the end of 2017, the company had deployed 11,000 products in 53 countries with more than 50 channel partners, according to Kapadia. “We decided that now it’s time to focus on North America,” he says.

Kapadia acknowledges that it’s not unusual for a company with Canadian roots to do the bulk of its business overseas, but “you can imagine how difficult it is being on the continent and not focusing on the continent,” he says. “America is a pretty binary market. You have to be in or you’re out. Now we’re ready.”

Invixium showcased a number of products at ISC West including its latest, IXM TITAN which offers biometric options for access control applications including facial recognition and fingerprint or finger vein authentication as well as additional functionality for video. Kapadia himself had a busy show, and also spoke on an ISC West panel discussion about the intersection between biometrics and good cybersecurity practices (see p.3).

Overall, Kapadia says his return to ISC West after a sixyear respite was a very successful one. “I had a lot of industry experience before and I knew you had to be ready to come to the Olympics, which is ISC West.”

VXG - LIVE VIDEO STREAMING SOLUTIONS TORONTO, ONT.

Yaro Lisitsyn, co-founder of Toronto-based VXG, a provider of live video streaming solutions, says there are multiple reasons why his company is exhibiting at ISC West for the first time this year.

First, he says, the company wants to speak with other companies, and connect with the community and the industry. Secondly, they are looking for new customers, and finally, he says, they want to learn more.

“You always learn when you attend these kinds of shows,” he explains. “You are talking to people, [learning] industry terms, and a lot of great ideas come from this kind of trade show.”

Additionally, VXG wanted to meet and connect with customers who have already bought their software. Ten to 20 of the exhibitors at ISC West are VXG’s customers, as are several attendees, adds Lisitsyn.

At the show, VXG showcased its live video streaming software, explains Robert MacMillan, VXG’s head of sales.

“Anyone who wants to stream from a security camera and then watch it on a cell phone, or they want to watch it on a desktop browser…we have the software behind it,” he elaborates.

“What we’re showcasing is that software, how easy it is to use, how great the video quality is,” he continues. “A big thing in our industry is latency… so showing some very low latency is key.”

In fact, says MacMillan, VXG is one of the earliest adapters to the new industry standard for low latency, Web RTC. “That’s the biggest solution that we’re going to be showing.”

SANTOR SECURITY INC. MONTREAL, QUE..

Santor Security Inc., based in Montreal, is also exhibiting at ISC West for the first time this year, shares Sylvie Jorge, executive director at the company.

At the show, Santor showcased a prototype of the SANTOR UNG52 Microphone Jammer, she explains. The jammer protects private conversations from voice recorders, microphones and direct human listening.

Operated by a mobile app, users can control the jammer via Bluetooth with the UNG52 free mobile app. UNG52 features two modes: ultrasonic and acoustic.

In ultrasonic mode, the product emits no audible sound, while in acoustic mode, it emits a voice scrambling mix that can be heard and personalized via the app.

Companies can install one or multiple units, placing it on a conference table or installing it permanently on the ceiling.

Ultimately, the company attended for new customer leads and to meet new people at the show, Jorge concludes.

RACK-A-TIERS VICTORIA, B.C.

Although this isn’t the first time Rack-a-Tiers, a Victoria, B.C.-based manufacturer of speciality electrical tools, is exhibiting at ISC West — it’s the second — president and co-founder Ken MacLachlan says the show is a good way for the company to gain exposure.

At ISC West, the company aimed to find leads, as well as meet new people and new clients, specifically wholesalers, shares MacLachlan.

The overall goal is to sell speciality tools to the security and alarm industry. Specifically, Rack-a-Tiers showcased tools for fishing wires, commodities for the alarm and security industry, as well as items for attaching cable specific to the industries, he explains.

The company also sells wire dispensing, wire pulling, drilling solutions, cable management, hand tools, tool belts and holders for security and electrical professionals.

“It’s a well-attended event,” adds MacLachlan. “Normally we do electrical tradeshows for electricians, and they’re not as highly attended as the security and alarm shows. So we get good exposure with the amount of people that come through.”

Mantrap portal solution

Boon Edam

The Circelock Combi is a “half portal” solution that helps security executives prevent unauthorized entry into high security areas currently using fire-rated swinging doors. The Combi was designed as a retrofit option to address the risk that exists with swinging doors — once an authorized user opens a swinging door, other people may also gain access (“piggybacking”). The Circlelock Combi attaches to an existing fire-rated door, converting it into a mantrap solution that prevents piggybacking 24/7 and eliminates the need for manned supervision. A cylindrical solution with a single sliding door on one end and an opening on the other end, the Combi is mounted to an existing wall and swing door. Using Boon Edam’s StereoVision2 detection technology in the ceiling to scan the compartment and ensure a user is alone prior to unlocking the swing door, users can choose to prevent piggybacking for inbound and outbound traffic.

Camera connectivity solution

American Dynamics

VideoEdge TrickleStor provides an integrated camera connectivity solution protecting against video loss by recording locally on Illustra cameras. Video is protected by switching the storage of recorded video to a camera’s SD card when an outage takes place. When connectivity is re-established, recorded video trickles back to the NVR in the place where it would have been had the network remained intact. TrickleStor automates the process of media database repair, reducing the number of areas that cause customer concern when a network failure event occurs. www.johnsoncontrols.com
