isc west 2016: care and craft over volume and pricing

ISC West broke attendance records in 2016 and featured more than 1,000 exhibitors, but it was the attention to detail those exhibitors were able to provide that impressed attendees.

Volume and pricing is no longer enough, says IHS analyst Jon Cropley. Surveillance manufacturers, for example, are stepping up their feature sets in order to appeal to the dealer and end user.

“Some of these features are about improving image quality such as higher resolution, improved low light performance and wide dynamic range,” says Cropley. “IHS tracks the proportion of cameras that include each of these features and, in each case, the proportion has increased in recent years.”

Cropley adds that compression, storage and analytics are also coming to the forefront and manufacturers are focusing more on end-to-end solutions rather than point products in an effort to target certain verticals or markets.

Antoinette Modica is familiar with the product side of the market, having working for companies like Mitsubishi, Panasonic and Samsung. She recently joined U.S. integrator Tech Systems to help the firm establish a Canadian office. Her experience of ISC West was: “‘What else can we offer you?’” versus ‘Here’s

our newest camera.’”

She says the discussions she had with camera vendors were collaborative in nature; it was less about the nuts and bolts of the product and more about going to market with integrators to address end user requirements.

“Everyone has good technology,” she says. “Manufacturers produce very good products. So now it’s the other layer that gets you in.”

Roger Barnes, president of Burlington, Ont.-based Roger’s Security Systems, attended the show with his father, who’s also a partner in his company. Barnes, who visits ISC every other year, noted the volume of cameras on the exhibit floor and how difficult it can be manufacturers to truly differentiate themselves. He said some

of the most innovative technology he saw came from smaller manufacturers like Digital Watchdog — the company impressed him with its latest 48 MP multi-sensor camera.

Barnes says he also “found some new technology in access control. I’ve seen leaps and bounds in the past year on access control.” ISONAS, for example, is a pure play IP access control vendor which distinguishes itself, says Barnes, by being easy to set up.

Modica noted several trends at ISC West, including an increase in the number of Cloud-based security systems. She says the growth of consumerbased Cloud services has helped spur development in security and provided a greater level of awareness. There’s a greater sense of “It’s OK to go to the Cloud,” she says.

There was also more emphasis on making solutions more secure at an integral level, i.e. addressing potential network weaknesses. “The focus on cyber protection seems to be increasing,” says Cropley. “For instance, I meet lots of vendors at ISC West each year and few of them mentioned cyber protection in 2015. This year, many of them did. However, vendors are being cautious about they communicate their capabilities in cyber protection to avoid becoming an obvious target for hackers.”

dragonfly offers hybrid diY model

Honeywell launched a new DIY hybrid service called DragonFly at ISC West to harvest the Millennials market that had previously resisted paying for a monitored home security solution.

The service comes as a result of Honeywell’s recent acquisition of RSI Technologies, makers of the Videofied wireless video alarm system.

Keith Jentoft of RSI (now Honeywell) introduced the product on a Honeywell blog post just prior to ISC West, describing it as a “business-in-box solution” that could potentially add new opportunities to Honeywell dealers who are used to more established models of installation and monitoring.

With DragonFly, dealers don’t ever actually have their hands on the product at any stage of the process. Users can order a kit (a hub and two cameras) online from an authorized DragonFly website run by the dealer, install it themselves and integrate it using their phone. The solution is then monitored by a central station. In this process, the dealer’s main role is to promote the service, but is still able to collect some of the RMR.

In an interview with SP&T News, David Paja, president of Honeywell’s security group, says he sees this as means to start addressing the majority of

people (an estimated 75 to 80 per cent) who currently do not have a monitored security solution in their homes.

“We’ve always had this view that our strength is our portfolio of products and the channel. How can we get into the DIY space, but do it through our channel?”

Paja acknowledges that there is a contingent of people who will want to both install and monitor their own equipment but there are others who are interested in a hybrid model where they

can install and view their own systems but still get professional monitoring on demand.

“With the DragonFly offering, we provide a tool to the dealers who are going to be able to reach out to new customers who they couldn’t address before. It’s a very interesting value proposition,” he says.

The service will launch first in the U.S. There is no launch date as yet for Canada “but our intention is to bring it global as quickly as possible,” says Paja.

hid global unveils

mobile initiative

HID Global made a series of announcements at ISC West as part of its latest mobility initiative which is designed, according to company executives who spoke at the conference, to provide a single cohesive strategy for HID’s major mobile projects.

Top executives — including Daniel Ballin, Director, Strategic Business Development and Innovation; Anthony Ball, President and Managing Director, IAM Solutions; and Rob Haslam, Vice President and Managing Director of the Government ID business — announced several major programs underway at HID that affect everything from mobile ID credentials, citizen IDs, Cloud-based access, policy-based predictive methods and biometrics.

The company announced in 2011 it was using credentials on smart phones to open doors when it conducted a pilot program at Arizona State University using Secure Identity Object (SIO) technology embedded in NFC-enabled devices. Today, it is enabling access to buildings on wearable devices and announced support at ISC West for both Apple Watch and Android Wear.

The company also announced the commercial availability of SDKs (software develop kits) for thirdparty developers to create their own applications for the technology.

HID Global is also ramping up secure IDs on smart phone devices, allowing something as integral as a driver’s licence to be carried on a device. As a credential stored on a phone, it could be used to share information only as needed, e.g. verify the age of a person purchasing alcohol as 21 or over.

The idea of official identifiers on a smart device is still relatively new, but Haslam said the concept is starting to snowball as more and more governments are showing interest. He anticipates that in the next few years, every region in the world will be participating and have examples of mobile identification.

Keith Jentoft shows off Honeywell’s “business in a box” DragonFly solution.
HID top brass discuss the company’s renewed approach to mobility.

The world is changing in diverse and divergent ways. At Genetec™ , we understand that, which is why our software is designed to evolve with you. axis launches small business line

Axis Communications launched a product line-up at ISC West designed to make the decision-making process easier for its small business customers.

The Companion line is designed to work out of the box with minimal set-up and complications, according to Fredrik Nilsson, vicepresident, Americas, Axis, and comprises only a handful of products to promote ease-of-use. The line includes an 8-channel network video recorder with built-in Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch, available in 2TB or 4TB configurations, cameras

in full HDTV or up to 2 Megapixel resolutions, and a VMS. Axis is also offering dedicated Companion training and promotions to installers who cater to the small business market.

The line is supported by Axis’s Zipstream, a compression technology that the company says can reduce bandwidth and storage requirements by more than 50 per cent.

The line is priced competitively, but is not designed to be rock bottom, said Nilsson. “We will never sell on price. That’s not how we do business,” he said at

a press event the opening morning of ISC West.

Asked whether these solutions might be available through multiple channels, including retail, Nilsson said Axis is in the process of reviewing its channel

Q&a with sam shalaby, CeO, Feenics

Ottawa-based

Feenics, maker of Keep, a Cloud-based access control solution, was a first-time exhibitor at ISC West this year. The company has shared booth space with other vendors in the past, but the timing was right to go it alone this year, according to CEO Sam Shalaby, an Ottawa fixture who also ran his own integration firm, FSC, before selling it to Convergint Technologies in 2013.

During ISC West, Feenics also announced a partnership with Schneider Electric and its new AccessXpert, a Cloud-based security management solution that provides mobile access to surveillance, intrusion

detection, access control and other systems.

SP&T News spoke to Shalaby during the show to get his take on how Cloud-based systems are being received by the security industry and how the evolution of Cloud has made it possible.

sP&t: What kinds of discussions are you having with customers or potential customers?

ss: The earlier discussions were about Cloud, and there was a lot of hesitation. Now, as they’ve heard more and more, most of them know that the Cloud is here to stay. Now they’re very inquisitive. “How do you do it? How does it affect us? Does it help us? What kind of talent do we need on staff?” You’re helping people and leading them through it. At the end of day, it’s a mindset change. You’ve got

to get involved or you’re going to get left behind.

sP&t: Are people aware of what it means to host data in the Cloud now?

ss: The Cloud industry itself [outside of security] has been helpful in answering a lot of these questions. Because there’s a buzz for the Cloud in security, everybody is reading about what it means.

sP&t: The availability of more mainstream services like Amazon — that’s changing the mindset?

ss: Absolutely. It is making things so much easier for us. When you show them what you can do and how you can do it — that you can set up a server in the Cloud, they realize this is not as complicated as they thought it was. The closer you get to it, the more comfortable you become.

Axis execs show off new products at a media event at ISC West, including the company’s latest line designed for the small business user.

strategy. Nilsson wouldn’t commit to a number, but he expected that the small business segment would grow for Axis and account for a larger percentage of its overall sales in a few years.

The company also introduced products aimed at the mid-sized market, reviewed some of its newer solutions for large enterprise customers and provided an update on its relationship with its parent company Canon. Axis co-founder Martin Gren said that the relationship is largely arm’s length, and the company has continued to conduct business autonomously.

“Canon has kept their promise,” he said.

openeye ready for web services

Liberty Lake, Wash.-based

OpenEye launched a new Web services platform at ISC West — a project that had been in development for three years, according to the company’s founder and CEO Rick Sheppard.

The platform consists of a server, web client, VMS, mobile app and NVR appliance and enables video to be stored locally while still accessible from the Cloud.

“I like to think of it as all the benefits of the Cloud without the limitations,” said Sheppard during a demo

isc west in pictures

session at the OpenEye booth. “When you start with big, beautiful videos as your premise ... video needs

to remain on site.” The new NVR was engineering to be Cloud-accessible and permissions can be managed centrally from the OpenEye Web Services (OWS) site. The data is encrypted and users require multi-factor authentication. The service also prevents unauthorized users from opening an inbound port.

The system is suitable for customers who operate multiple locations or have a lot of users, Sheppard added, such as retail, education or health care.

VP of sales Tom Cook shows off the company’s new booth. Samsung Techwin officially changed its name to Hanwha Techwin just prior to ISC West.

Smoke detector sensor

Nortek Security & Control

The new 2GIG Smoke Detector Sensor (aka 2GIG “Smoke Ring”) mounts directly between an existing AC-powered interconnected smoke detector and the wall or ceiling and converts the existing smoke detector into a wireless device that can be used in conjunction with the 2GIG GC2 and new 2GIG GC3 alarm panels and systems for more advanced monitoring. The 2GIG Smoke Detector Sensor does not react to the sound of the interconnected smoke detector but is instead triggered by an electric signal which cuts down on false alarms and increases reliability. Upon alarm, the 2GIG ‘Smoke Ring’ receives the electrical signal from the connected smoke detector and sends a wireless signal to the paired alarm panel which in turn alerts the proper authorities or homeowner of the emergency via their smartphone. www.nortekcontrol.com/2GIG
