THE BASICS OF DAYLIGHT HARVESTING AND TODAY’S ENERGY CODES

Kevin Parsons, Director, Energy Management, Controls and Automation – Canada, Leviton Manufacturing of Canada Ltd.

Overview of presentation:

• The 4 pillars of lighting control

• What is daylight harvesting?

• Why pay attention to Energy Codes and Standards?

• Functionality vs. features

• Simple solutions and strategies

Speaker bio:

As the Director of the Energy Management Controls & Automation division of Leviton Manufacturing, Kevin is responsible for business development in Canada. Having worked in the electrical industry for over 30 years in product development, field support and sales, he brings a unique yet practical perspective to the challenges of modern energy codes and applications. His project experience includes many years in California where many of the Energy Code requirements are pioneered.

NET ZERO – CODES AND THE ENERGY PROJECT AT NRC

Philip Rizcallah, Executive Director, National Research Council

Overview of presentation:

As part of the federal government mandate under the Pan Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change, the National Research Council has been commissioned to update the National Energy Code for Buildings as well as the National Building Code housing section to achieve net zero ready code requirements for buildings and homes by 2022.

The update will discuss briefly what the Technical Codes Committees are developing and the impact on industry. The presentation will also focus on the Climate Change Adaptation Project and the potential impact on the plumbing and heating industry.

Speaker bio:

Philip Rizcallah is currently a Program Director at the Construction Research Centre, National Research Council of Canada. His responsibili-

ties include oversight of Codes Canada (National Building, Energy, Plumbing and Fire Codes) and the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (evaluation of innovative construction products). He graduated from Dalhousie University with degrees in mechanical engineering and mathematics.

He is the NRC Policy Advisor to the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes; the Policy Advisor to the Provincial Territorial Policy Advisory Committee on Codes; Canada’s representative on the Inter-Jurisdictional Regulatory Collaboration Committee; Member of the CSA Strategic Steering Committee on Civil Engineering and Infrastructure; and member of the ULC Fire Council Steering Committee.

LEGIONELLA – TODAY AND TOMORROW, WHAT DO WE KNOW?

Rick Proulx, Business Development Director, Reliance Worldwide Corporation (Canada) Inc.

Overview of presentation:

With the swirling theories and research around some of the industry’s contemporary topics like “age of water”, stagnation, concerns with crumbling distribution infrastructure, point of exit, water quality, pipe sizing, corrosion, water conservation and energy efficiency – it is hard to see the forest for the trees.

At this session you will learn:

• What is Legionella?

• Where it comes from?

• What are the risks? And why are they more so for the future.

• What are we as an industry doing about it?

Speaker bio:

Rick Proulx is the Director of Business Development for Reliance Worldwide Canada. His association with the company dates back to 1997 and since then he has helped establish RMC North America's distribution network and product launch. With more than 40 years of experience in this industry, including direct involvement in safe hot water temperature delivery since 1985, Rick has contributed in all facets of the industry to promote the importance of issues related to the prevention of scalding and the proliferation of the legionella bacteria. New Provincial and National codes have recognized the urgency of the measures needed to reduce the dangers associated with hot water distribution and storage.

A DECADE OF MEET

MEET Show Time Machine

Alot of things have changed since I first began attending and covering The MEET Show for Electrical Business Magazine over a decade ago. Back then, the lighting market was dominated by HIDs, PARs and fluorescents, crummy CFLs were making inroads and LEDs as lighting... well, they were a cute little novelty.

(There also seemed to be more lighting players in the market, until they either got absorbed by bigger players or fizzled out. Nature hates a vacuum, they say, which is why it’s nice to see new lighting players jockeying for market share.)

Consider the standardlooking yet top-of-theline 2006 work van compared to today’s high-roof/mobile office models. These days, the latter is the norm. Do you remember when the Sprinter first hit the Canadian market? I’ll admit it was the oddest-looking thing in the world, yet all the major work van manufacturers have followed suit.

A DECADE OF MEET

But there are also things that have not changed in all those years. Actually, I should rephrase that... there are also tried-and-true solutions that have endured and progressively improved—over the years.

One of the things that stand out for me is United Wire & Cable’s Maxiamp cable bus, which is easy to pick out in these photos from the past. When you compare photos from 2006 to those from just two years ago, it doesn’t look like much has changed, besides maybe the booth graphics, but this solution continued to improve and find new applications over the years.

Glenn’s Intelligent Parking Lot Controller (IPLC), relatively new back in 2006, is still around. I last came upon it at AEA’s Learning Expo in Calgary just a few months ago; still doing what it did then, only better.

In 2006, it was awarding about $50,000 to deserving pupils; the 2018 instalment, meantime, is awarding a total of $156,250.

Moncton fast facts

HISTORY:

Moncton was incorporated as a Town in 1855 when shipbuilding was the main industry. However, the advent of steam and iron ships soon brought the prosperity to an end and Moncton reverted to village status in 1862. Almost 10 years later, Moncton became the Atlantic Regional Headquarters for the Intercolonial Railway and, in 1875, became a Town once more. This revival explains the civic motto, Resurgo, which means, “I rise again.” Moncton became a City on April 23, 1890.
