Rick Amsbury Award of Excellence
Pat Pagano, an avid fisherman, started the HandiCapable Fishing Derby in 2003. The event started with 10 participants and today brings over 350 and is the largest derby of its kind.
Many local media and authorities have participated in the success of this event raising community awareness and funds in continued support of the event. The ICHAHandiCapable Fishing Derby, one of Canada's largest events for HandiCapable individuals, attracts people of all ages from Essex County and surrounding areas to take part in a wonderful day of fishing, community, food, entertainment and friendly competition.
For his efforts, Pagano is receiving the Rick AmsburyAward of Excellence. This award is “presented annually to an individual or individuals judged by the angling community based on their outstanding performance put forth through the course of the year.”
About the ICHA
The Italian Canadian HandiCapable Associa on (ICHA) is a not-for-profit, charitable organiza on dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals with physical and/or intellectual disabili es across Windsor and Essex County by providing sports, recrea onal and social ac vies. The roots of the ICHA were established in 1977 at the Glengarda School when Egidio Novelle o began a soccer program for persons living with disabili es. ICHA was granted charitable status on July 22, 1987.

Since then, ICHA has implemented several addi onal sports, recrea onal and social ac vies designed to build self-confidence, self-esteem and provide our member’s access to a unified community. Along with the soccer program, ICHA offers art, basketball, bocce, bowling (5 and 10 pin), dance, floor hockey, strength training, tae kwon do and modified yoga. In addi on our Valen ne’s Day, Halloween and Christmas par es, and the extraordinarily successful annual fishing derby are filled with friendship and fun crea ng wonderful and las ng memories.
In October 2022, the ICHA opened the Novelle o Rosa Complex with the intent of providing a safe and inclusive place for individuals with disabili es in our community. Through the generosity of all levels of government and the overwhelming support of businesses and individuals in Windsor and throughout Essex County, the ICHA was successful in this endeavor. The word “Italian” in our name reflects the ethnic background of our founding members and recognizes their generous contribu ons and the commitment they have given to our organiza on over the years.
Today, ICHA is one of the largest organiza ons of its kind in Ontario with a membership base of over 200 members ranging in age from fi een (15) to sixty-five (65). The ICHA is not possible without the efforts and generosity of our volunteers. If you know of someone that could benefit from our programs or is interested in volunteering, please have them contact us. Inquiries can be sent to:
