By OMNRF Conservation Officer Colin Stass Southern Marine Enforcement Unit
I was in Windsor on Sunday, June 1/2014, along with C.O. Charles Brooks and several celebrities from the Pro Fishing world, to help kids with disabilities learn how to fish. Pat Pagano organized the event on behalf of the Italian Canadian Handicapable Association and invited the OMNRF to attend and help out. This event has been attended by Charles and me for several years now and we both get a lot of satisfaction from it.
Each year we tow and set up the MNRF Enforcement Outreach Trailer which has proven to be a hit with both the children and their families. The trailer is stocked with items that have been seized, over the years, by enforcement officers from all parts of the Province. They are always topics of discussion by members of the public. Charles and I took turns staffing the trailer and helping the kids bait their hooks and instructing them on how to fish.
The weather was very cooperative and the derby drew more than 150 kids and their families. Many people were there to fish and assist the kids; others were there to view the Pro Fishing boats and to talk fishing with the pros. It appeared everyone enjoyed the displays, food and the great atmosphere. I believe it was the largest attended event to date for the derby, now in its thirteenth year.
Italo Labignan, host of Canadian Sportfishing TV show and a personal friend of mine, attends every year donating his time and energy to the event. I look forward to talking with him each and every year. In years past, Clay Dyer, American Pro Angler, from Hamilton, Alabama helped children with physical disabilities learn how to cast a line and catch a fish. (Clay was born with no legs, no left arm and only a partial right arm.) He put on a casting demonstration for the crowd, which is something to behold. From his wheelchair, he uses his neck and arm to steadily hold and cast a fishing rod. His motto is "If I can, you can." I am always impressed with him!
I was pleasantly surprised by the number of people that took interest in the MNRF display and stopped by to ask questions. I truly believe this is one of the best outreach events the MNRF can be involved in. I look forward to being a part of it for years to come.
