As the president of the I C H A, I wish to extend, a very warm welcome to all the participants and to those of you visiting Windsor for the ICHA’s 11th Annual HandiCAPABLE Fishing Derby.
The ICHA is a volunteer based organization that supports people with disabilities with the funds raised in the community. For eleven years with the help of Pat Pagano and many tournament anglers, we have provided a day of fun for the participants of our derby at the foot of the Detroit River. A special thanks to all our supporters that have made our success possible. The success that will be enjoyed by and benefit people with disabilities.
I wish to extend to all the participants and their families an enjoyable weekend.
Share the Spirit,
Joe Ferrara ICHA President
Information on the Italian Canadian Handicapable Association
The roots of the ICHA were planted in 1977 at Glengarda School when Egidio Novelletto began a soccer program for mentally challenged individuals. The Association was granted charitable, non profit status on July 22, 1987 .
Since that time, the Association has taken on the responsibility of delivering a number of additional social and recreational activities. They include social activities designed to integrate individuals into the community. The Halloween, Valentine’s day and Christmas dinner / dances are filled with good food, dancing and fun. In addition to the soccer program, track & field, bocce ball, poly hockey and basketball have been added to meet the needs and demands of these “special individuals”. The programs are currently run out of the Novelletto Rosati Complex on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, year round. ICHA social members participate in many out of town soccer tournaments throughout the summer and have experienced the pleasure of traveling as a group to such places as Cleveland , Ohio ( clog dancing competition ), the Thousand Islands , African Lion Safari and Canada’s Wonderland .
The ICHA has established a fund to offer bursaries at the University of Windsor and St Clair College, accessible to people with physical and mental disabilities. The Dario Rossi Memorial Bursary is also available to ICHA volunteers.
Today the ICHA is one of the largest organization of its’ kind in Ontario with a social membership of 200 individuals and a voting membership of 80. It is important to note that our Association has run entirely through the efforts of our volunteers. Our social members range in age from 10 to 50, with the average age at 25. Membership in the ICHA is open to all people with a physical or mental disability in Windsor and Essex County. The word “Italian” in our Association’s name reflects the ethnic background of our Founding Members and recognizes their generous contributions and commitment given to the special individuals over the years. The ICHA has built the Novelletto Rosati Complex, through the generosity of many Windsor and Essex County businesses with the ultimate goal of providing a home base for all people with physical or mental disabilities. If you know of someone that could benefit from our programs or is interested in volunteering their service, please have them contact us .Visit our web site www.icha.ca.

LAKE ERIE AND AYLMER DISTRICT CONSERVATION OFFICERS ATTEND 10TH ANNUAL ITALIAN CANADIAN HANDICAPABLE ASSOCIATION FISH DERBY IN WINDSOR
With the Detroit River and the Ambassador Bridge in the background, Conservation Officer Colin Stass from the Lake Erie Unit, along with Port Officer Al Dimena and I attended the 10th annual fishing derby hosted by the Italian Canadian HandiCapable Association on June 3, 2012 at the Windsor waterfront.
The Italian Canadian HandiCapable Association (ICHA) is a Windsor based non-profit organization which dedicates itself to enhancing the lives of the physically and mentally disabled through recreational and social activities.
This event has help from a number of volunteers and sponsors, that line the shore of the river with boats, an inflatable nursery tale character, musical and magical entertainment. More than just fishing is going on at this event. Additionally, long time supporter of the event and TV host Italo Labignon was in attendance again to show his support and assist with the event.
Also professional angler Clay Dyer was present to promote the event and provide inspiration for all those in attendance. For those not familiar with Clay Dyer or have not seen him on numerous fishing shows and news telecasts, Clay Dyer was born with no lower limbs, no left arm and a partial right arm. Clay Dyer not only fishes the hugely competitive B.A.S.S. circuit, but also finds time to do motivational lectures and presentations and is a volunteer athletic coach at a high school in Alabama.
To have Clay demonstrate tying on lures, casting lures at small targets for demonstrations in front of hundreds in attendance (it took a couple of tries in 25km/hr winds!!)or hearing fishing stories about Clay switching a handle on a reel from the left side to the right side in a boat running at 30 miles per hour across Lake St. Clair, Clay Dyer is an inspiration to all, not just the handicapable participants.
While the outreach trailer and its collection of furs, taxidermied Asian Carp, birds and assortment of elk, caribou, moose and deer antlers garnered attention from both the participants and members of the public enjoying the Windsor Riverfront, the inspiration and dedication of both the participants and event volunteers takes center stage at this event.
Yet, for me, it was awesome to introduce and share the feel of the furs and describe them to one special person who may have been unable to visually see the soft, shiny pelt of the river otter that was presented to him, but was still able to appreciate the magnificence in it.
Seeing that grin spread across his face as he was assisted in touching the fur had some magically infectious properties that seemed to spread smiles throughout all witnessing the moment.
Even with a recent cold front coming through, threatening skies and looming weather forecasts of rain, the event again came off, seemingly without a hitch and had to have been a big success by the huge smiles on the participant’s faces.
This year attracted 136 participants in the event, a number that increases annually.
Oh, and as a bonus there were some fish caught, that even made the smiles larger, if that was possible. This year a three pound walleye was landed as the large lake freighters moved up and down the Detroit River. To the participants of the event, the catching of fish, whether it is a walleye or even a goby, is almost as much fun as seeing old friends or meeting new ones at this awesome event.
