Chestermere Property Under Investigation in Connection with Calgary Homicide

Latest search aims to uncover clues related to the region’s 14th murder this year

The quiet surroundings near Chestermere were disrupted this Tuesday as nearly 20 Calgary Police Service officers, alongside search and rescue personnel, descended upon a rural property east of the city. This latest search operation, set to continue for several more days, is part of the ongoing investigation into the recent murder of a Calgary resident.

The tragic incident took place in Calgary’s northwest neighbourhood of Capitol Hill in the early hours of September 9. The victim, identified as 33-year-old Jordan Jacques-Vetten, was fatally shot and declared dead at the scene upon the arrival of the CPS officers. The emergency responders were initially responding to a call reporting a man in medical distress in the 1700 block of 18th Avenue N.W. at 3:50 a.m.

In a subsequent update from investigators on September 12, it was announced that the red Pontiac Sunfire, which was spotted near the incident area, had been located. As the hunt for clues continues, the authorities are keen on piecing together the events leading to Jacques-Vetten’s untimely death. Calgary Police are urging anyone with valuable information to come forward and assist in their investigation. They can be reached at 403-266-1234. For those who wish to provide information anonymously, tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477

Chestermere RCMP to Host Inaugural Regimental Ball Celebrating 150 Years of Service

A grand evening of entertainment, philanthropy, and community collaboration awaits Chestermere.

Often, we find ourselves traveling to Calgary or even further afield for a grand evening out. But this October, Chestermere is about to witness an event that promises urban sophistication, rustic charm, and a deep-rooted sense of community, all rolled into one. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) of Chestermere are all set to host the inaugural RCMP Regimental Ball on October 21st, 2023.

The city, renowned for its picturesque lake and tight-knit community spirit, is set to shimmer brighter on October 21st. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) of Chestermere is rolling out the red carpet, inviting locals to the inaugural RCMP Regimental Ball.

Typically, grand events of this nature would require residents to journey to larger cities. Not this time. The RCMP Regimental Ball offers an unprecedented opportunity for locals to don their finest attire, mingle with neighbours, and partake in a night rich in culture, entertainment, and philanthropy—all within the heart of Chestermere.

In an exclusive sit-down with The Anchor, Synergy’s Terry Gill and S/Sgt. Kathy Klassen of Chestermere RCMP shed light on this eagerly anticipated soirée. “It’s more than an event; it’s a showcase of Chestermere’s spirit. We’ve combined local stories with national heritage,” gushed Klassen.

Kicking off the night, attendees will be ushered into a world of splendor. Fusion Bollywood, a renowned Calgarybased event décor company, will transform the venue into a spectacle of elegance, ensuring every corner exudes grandeur.

The evening will unravel a blend of unique experiences. From the evocative rhythms of indigenous dancers, the mesmerizing performances of RCMP highland dancers, to the vibrant moves of Sikh cultural dancers—this cocktail hour promises to be a feast for the senses. And while guests indulge in gourmet hors d’oeuvres and are serenaded by a live harpist, renowned artist Russel Thompson will immortalize the evening’s fervor onto canvas. Thompson’s artwork will be a star attraction, destined to be auctioned off by night’s end. For those looking to immortalize their evening further, a photo booth will be at the ready, capturing memories amidst the backdrop of Canadian pride.

And speaking of Canadian pride, the evening’s pièce de résistance will undoubtedly be the head table. Imagine

dining under the auspices of a colossal Canadian flag, while the entrancing melodies of an RCMP piper fills the air. It’s an experience that promises to leave guests awestruck. Continuing on this culinary journey, attendees will be treated to an array of palate-pleasing dishes courtesy of the award-winning caterer, Great Events. But the feast isn’t limited to food; attendees can dive deep into auctions featuring exclusive items, participate in the Regimental Challenge Coin toss for a shot at two WestJet tickets, or try their luck at the Wine Wall raffle.

The RCMP’s history and legacy will be front and center throughout. 2023 marks a significant year for the institution—the 150th anniversary of its establishment. The Red Serge, an enduring symbol of Canadian culture, will be celebrated in style.

Moreover, this isn’t just a celebration—it’s a philanthropic venture. “Every penny raised will find its way back into Chestermere,” assured Gill and Klassen. The Chestermere Women’s Crisis Society and Project Rewrite are the prime beneficiaries. While the former is a haven for vulnerable women, the latter champions restorative justice, encouraging individuals to amend their narrative postadversity.

Detailed coverage on both organizations will be provided in subsequent articles by The Anchor, ensuring readers gain a holistic understanding of their endeavors.

The auctions are, without a doubt, an avenue for attendees to not only walk away with precious memorabilia but also to contribute directly to these organizations. Silent auction items range from luxurious Banff Park Lodge stays, Stampeder tickets, and handcrafted moccasins to signed NHL jerseys. Meanwhile, the live auction promises more glamorous prizes, from a chauffeured limo ride to the iconic Spruce Meadows Christmas Lights to an exquisite diamond necklace.

“This Ball is the epitome of ‘by Chestermere for Chestermere,’” Klassen reiterated, capturing the essence of this landmark event.

As October 21st draws closer, the excitement is palpable. Residents have a golden opportunity to revel in grandiosity, pay homage to the RCMP’s legacy, and reinforce their community spirit. So, Chestermere, dust off those formal dresses and suits, and get ready for an evening that promises history, luxury, and an undeniable sense of community.

Turbulent Pharmacare Negotiations Cause Concern

Liberals and NDP clash over draft of anticipated pharmacare bill.

In a recent turn of events, the federal New Democrats have dismissed the Liberals’ first draft on the highly awaited pharmacare bill, signaling challenges in the negotiations that Health Minister Mark Holland labels as “extremely fluid.”

This bill, which was promised to be introduced this fall, stemmed from the supply-and-confidence deal between the government and the NDP. The agreement emphasized the progress toward a universal national pharmacare system, with the legislation set to be passed by the year’s end.

However, Don Davies, the NDP health critic, expressed his dissatisfaction with the initial draft. He said, “The New Democrats’ benchmarks are clear, and this draft isn’t meeting them. We’re waiting for a subsequent draft.”

For the NDP, the essential stipulation is that pharmacare should be funded and operated through the public singlepayer system. While they are open to beginning with essential medicines and progressing from there, the party stresses on fixed timelines within the legislation.

Despite the ongoing discussions, Health Minister Mark Holland remains non-committal on a specific model, citing that the situation remains ever-changing. Holland emphasized the foundational role of the legislation for national pharmacare, suggesting that whatever is decided now will likely evolve in the future.

The government’s considerations span from the NDP’s preference for a single-payer system to more ambiguous legislation that doesn’t precisely detail how pharmacare will

be realized. There’s also speculation about a program for low-income individuals mirroring the upcoming dental care plan.

Dr. Eric Hoskins, who led the 2019 committee on pharmacare, vouched for a single-payer system. His comprehensive report highlighted the numerous benefits, including reduced drug prices and hospital visits. Finances, however, remain a significant concern. Past estimates from 2017 by the parliamentary budget officer project an annual cost between $23 billion and $27 billion in today’s currency for a pharmacare plan. But by focusing on essential medicines initially, the cost might be lowered to around $3.5 to $4.5 billion annually.

However, amidst Canada’s looming economic slowdown and increased government debt, there’s skepticism about the country’s capability to finance such a program. Robert Asselin from the Business Council of Canada voiced concerns about introducing a massive program in the current fiscal landscape.

In terms of the forthcoming legislation, experts like Steven Lewis, a health policy adjunct professor, predict it to be broad, possibly resembling the Canada Health Act. This could mean that specifics like provincial roles and the place of private insurers might be determined later.

While the timeline remains unclear, Minister Holland assures that the end-of-year deadline will be met as per the agreement. Chestermere residents, like many Canadians, will be closely monitoring this issue, understanding the potential impact on their healthcare.

On Aug. 10th, the federal government released a draft of its proposed Clean Electricity Regulations, which aim to create a net-zero power grid across Canada by 2035. With the wellbeing of Albertans continuing to be our United Conservative government’s top priority, our position on this plan remains the same: the proposed regulations are unconstitutional, irresponsible, and unaffordable. If the federal government has its way, Albertans will be at risk for soaring costs and blackouts during hot summer days, and cold winter nights. That’s why we have put Ottawa on notice.

We have a better path forward, one that doesn’t threaten families with absurd costs and blackouts – a plan that allows Alberta to chart its own path, as is our Constitutional right, to ensuring we have additional reliable and affordable electricity brought onto our grid that is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We will simply will not allow the

federal government to drive up the cost of power for Albertans or put the integrity of our grid at risk. We have heard from numerous businesses and policy experts expressing serious concerns about Ottawa’s plans. Just this past week, Business Council of Alberta president Adam Legge joined 48 of Alberta’s top CEOs and entrepreneurs who felt the need to trek to Ottawa to urge the Trudeau Liberals to take a regional approach. Legge summarized the federal governments irresponsible plans best, saying that “the notion of having a one-sizefits-all electricity regulation for a country this big, this vast, this different, is not realistic … let’s create a regionalized approach to what is a very regional-specific challenge.”

Canadians across the country need to know that Ottawa’s proposed regulations would make electricity unaffordable and unreliable – and people need to act now and push the federal government to make changes and find a more affordable path forward.

Join us in the fight to keep Alberta and Canada’s electricity affordable and reliable by visiting TelltheFeds.ca. Make your voice heard, because no one wants to get left in the dark!

Chestermere Mirrors Alberta’s Record Demographic Growth

As Alberta leads the nation in population growth, Chestermere sees its building expansion surge.

As Alberta establishes itself as the frontrunner in Canada’s demographic growth, Chestermere isn’t far behind with its booming construction and development, reflecting the province’s upward trend. According to the recent report by Statistics Canada, between July 1, 2022, and July 1, 2023, Alberta set the pace for the country, boasting the fastest population growth across all provinces and territories, with an increase of 4 per cent. This surge can be attributed not just to international migration but also to a record-breaking net gain from interprovincial migration.

Highlighting this significant milestone, the report stated, “Alberta saw 56,245 more people moving to the province than leaving it, establishing the highest annual net interprovincial gains not only for Alberta but for any province or territory since data has been comparably recorded from 1971/1972.”

Ontario and British Columbia trailed behind, each registering a 3 per cent increase, while Manitoba and Saskatchewan noted a 2.9 per cent and 2.6 per cent rise, respectively. Quebec, despite its record 2.3 per cent growth, stood second to the last, with Newfoundland and

Labrador registering the least growth, at 1.3 per cent. Drawing parallels to the past, the demographic surge on July 1, 2023, marks the steepest population growth in a 12-month span since 1957—a year remembered for the Hungarian refugee crisis and the peak of the baby boom era. “The increase observed last year is over double the one in 1957 (+555,000). With this pace, Canada’s population would double in the next 25 years,” the report detailed. Diving deeper, the report reveals that 98 per cent of the Canadian population’s growth from July 1, 2022, to July 1, 2023, stemmed from net international migration. In contrast, only 2 per cent resulted from the net difference between births and deaths. This growth led the nation to another monumental milestone: on June 16, 2023, Canada’s population exceeded 40 million.

Chestermere’s burgeoning building growth stands as a testament to these figures, highlighting the city’s appeal and potential in the eyes of newcomers. With Alberta leading in demographic growth, Chestermere’s future shines brighter than ever, promising opportunities, development, and a vibrant community for all its residents.

Alberta Reveals Fall Immunization Schedule Amidst Respiratory Virus Concerns

Residents urged to prepare as influenza season approaches; province’s response to respiratory illnesses under scrutiny

Starting Tuesday, October 10, Albertans eligible for fall respiratory virus vaccines, including for influenza and COVID-19, can start booking their shots. With appointments commencing on October 16, the Alberta Health Services (AHS) has facilitated multiple avenues for vaccine bookings, including their dedicated Alberta Vaccine Booking System, community health clinics, and the 811 hotline. The anticipated XBB COVID-19 vaccine formulation, which is expected to be superior, is also in the pipeline. The province suggests those awaiting their COVID-19 booster shots might want to hold off until this new formulation is available.

This vaccination push comes amidst other health concerns in the province. Earlier this week, the topic of immunization was unexpectedly mingled with an E. Coli outbreak update in Calgary daycares. Reporters took the opportunity to question Premier Danielle Smith regarding her stand on the COVID-19 booster shots, in light of the federal government’s recent recommendations. Smith remained private on her decision, stating she prioritizes her immune health and will consult with her doctor.

When Health Minister Adriana LaGrange was posed with the same question, she responded with a similar sentiment of autonomy over health decisions. However, she also emphasized the significance of vaccinations, particularly in

the upcoming flu season, saying, “Doing what you can to prevent severe illness will also help secure our healthcare system for those who need it most.”

Comparatively, our western neighbors, British Columbia, are re-imposing mandatory masking in healthcare settings from October 3. Visitors in long-term care facilities will be obligated to don medical masks in communal areas, as announced on the B.C. government’s official site.

Although Alberta once rescinded the masking directive back in late June, its healthcare statistics remain a focal point. From September 3, Alberta has seen 21 confirmed RSV cases and 52 influenza cases leading to 10 hospitalizations. In the same span, the province recorded 1,470 COVID-19 cases, 286 hospitalizations, and sadly, 20 fatalities.

Alberta is soon set to unveil an updated dashboard providing comprehensive respiratory illness data. This will align Alberta’s reporting system with provinces such as British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Nova Scotia.

In conclusion, while immunization remains a potent defense, Albertans are also advised to continue maintaining hygiene protocols, keeping social distance, and avoiding contact when ill, as a combined effort to curb the spread of respiratory diseases this fall.

YMCA Calgary launches esports pilot

Program a first of its kind for YMCA in Canada

Submitted

CALGARY, ALTA.—Calgary youth will have the chance to learn new skills and build lasting friendships this fall, and it’s all thanks to the power of video games.

Registration is now open for YMCA Calgary’s new esports pilot program. Launching with the first virtual tournament the week of Oct. 16, the pilot brings together up to 75 youth in friendly Rocket League, Fall Guys and Chess tournaments.

“We are breaking ground,” says Shannon Doram, President and CEO of YMCA Calgary. “Esports will allow our team to engage youth in new ways that are relevant and meaningful to them, combating social isolation and creating diverse spaces where everyone belongs. You can feel the excitement in the air.”

Sarah Malahias, YMCA Calgary program development manager, says the pilot provides a unique opportunity for Calgary youth to develop valuable skills that are more relevant now than ever before.

“Esports help youth thrive through community and healthy competition,” says Malahias. “Our new esports program gives all Calgary youth a safe place to grow, compete, work together as a team, learn important skills and reach their own potential.”

Delivered in phases, YMCA Calgary’s esports pilot begins with a series of one-off tournaments running from Oct. 16 to Dec. 17. The online tournaments, Malahias says, remove physical barriers and allow all youth to participate no matter their location or ability. In the new year, the program will expand indoors at the YMCA with plans to create leagues with weekly practices,

games and a holistic physical and mental health and wellness program.

Mitch Hanen, a life-long gamer and general manager of YMCA Remington, is excited to see the growth of the program and knows first-hand the real-life benefits that esports can provide.

“The strategy aspect of esports really gets players thinking, and multiplayer games give people the chance to be part of a team,” says Hanen. “This is where the youth are right now. This program can fill a need in our community.”

Through the program, youth will also cultivate internet safety skills, develop online etiquette and nurture the skills required for success in STEM.

Studies have shown that people who play video games for an hour a day have higher concentration and comprehension levels. Organized esports bring even more benefits to players, such as building lasting relationships with peers and doing better in school.

“There is a stigma around gaming culture. However, esports can be part a healthy and balanced lifestyle,” says Malahias. “By focusing on holistic development, our program creates a safe place for youth to learn and explore while building healthy habits in the game and in real life.”

Limited spots are available in the esports pilot this fall. For more information about the pilot, the games on offer this fall and to register, visit the Y online at YMCACalgary.org/esports.

Trans Mountain Expansion to Propel Canadian Oil Production to Record Levels

Deloitte Canada’s recent analysis predicts an unprecedented boost in Canadian oil production, primarily driven by the Trans Mountain pipeline’s upcoming operations.

The anticipated initiation of the Trans Mountain pipeline is set to elevate Canada’s oil output to unparalleled heights within the forthcoming two years, a new Deloitte Canada report suggests.

As the expansion of this pivotal pipeline progresses, the increased capacity promises to amplify Canadian production by an impressive 375,000 barrels daily in the next two years. This marks an 8% ascent from the previous record achieved in November 2022 and a close-to 9% escalation from the production statistics of June this year, as per the Canadian Centre for Energy Information’s latest data.

The Deloitte report underscores the magnitude of this surge: “The growth in output is remarkable, exceeding the cumulative addition to Canada’s production over the past five years.”

Significantly, the Trans Mountain pipeline stands as the only conduit channeling oil from Alberta’s rich reserves to the West Coast. With the ongoing expansion, its capacity is projected to swell from the current 300,000 barrels per day to an impressive 890,000.

An essential aspect of this production boost is the redirection of exports. A significant portion of the enhanced exports will cater to markets beyond the United States, enabling Canadian producers to diminish their reliance on U.S. refining processes. This shift anticipates a more favorable pricing structure for Canadian bitumen, narrowing

the gap compared to the premium U.S. sweet crude. Further insights from the Deloitte report highlight that the majority of this impending surge in production is attributed to the oilsands. Here, industries are capitalizing on thermal expansion initiatives that effectively combine novel assets with pre-existing infrastructure, aiming to hasten developmental processes at reduced expenses.

Despite the bullish trend in production within North American territories, global crude prices are envisaged to retain their high stance through 2024. Deloitte’s oil and gas expert, Andrew Botterill, comments, “While North American crude supply rises, it will likely be counterbalanced by deliberate curtailments from certain OPEC+ members, mitigating any drastic reductions in price.”

With eyes set on early 2024, the Trans Mountain pipeline’s expansion inches towards completion. The federal government took the reins of this significant infrastructure in 2018, ensuring its forward motion after Kinder Morgan Canada Inc. contemplated discontinuation due to environmental concerns and regulatory impediments.

Supporters of this expansion contend that it’s imperative for positioning Canada in the global oil market, especially given the recent geopolitical turbulence involving Russia and Ukraine affecting global energy dynamics. In contrast, detractors emphasize the environmental ramifications, asserting that such escalation in oil output contradicts Canada’s climate change and emissions reduction goals.

As the Summer heat and long days fade away and Fall is upon us, it always amazes me how quickly the leave change colours. It seems like it happens overnight. The morning coffee on the deck now requires a jacket but continues to be a great way to start the day.

The kids are getting into their daily school routines and life seems back to be back on “schedule” for many families in Chestermere. With Thanksgiving fast approaching, I wonder how many Red Ribbon prize worthy preserves will be served up with the turkey and trimmings.

It’s an opportunity to review what’s available and identify any gaps in the community offerings. Both the City and the local not-for-profit organizations provide various supports and services to the residents of Chestermere. Residents had an opportunity to participate in the social needs assessment survey. The third party are to present their findings to Council in October. After this, it is expected that the awards for the 2023 Community Grant and 2024 Human Services Advisory Grants will be announced, and funding released. This funding is imperative for the not-for-profit organizations to continue their important work providing programming and services for residents.

With the changing seasons, comes the time to get some stuff done around the house. Whether it is getting the air conditioner or furnace serviced (or both), it is also time to start winterizing the yard. Have your gutters cleaned, tidy up the gardens and rake up those leaves. Don’t forget to disconnect outdoor hoses and turn off the water to outdoor taps. It is also important to check the batteries in your fire and carbon monoxide alarms. The fall maintenance list is long but important to complete.

News & Views on Health

Well, it is that time of year again to start considering the flu shots offered through Alberta Influenza Immunization Program. For the general public, the program is set to begin on October 16, 2023. If it is your thing, the new CovidModerna XBB.1.5 targeted vaccine will likely be accessible around the same time.

We are also in the onset of cold and flu season. I, myself, had a cold a few weeks back. It was somewhat weird, because, for over 3 years, I have not had a sniffle. It is rather interesting now, though, that a cough due to cold (yes that is a Forrest Gump reference) earns you a lot of side glances and people distancing themselves. I did take a covid test,

and it was negative (several in fact), but there was a certain feeling that I should be doing more. Certainly, staying home and avoiding crowds makes a lot of sense, but if you have to go out, make sure you wash your hands often and cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing. I have seen some people masking again, but again, that is a personal choice. All this is advice that my mother gave me many, many years ago and I would say is basic common courtesy when feeling under the weather.

How to properly care for your gardening tools

Neglecting to care for your gardening tools (shovels, hoes, trowels, garden shears, etc.) before the colder season sets in is a surefire way to ensure their poor condition come spring. This fall, don’t forget to follow these three essential steps to make sure your gardening tools are ready for duty once the warmer weather rolls around:

1. CLEAN

Wash your gardening tools with soapy water (if necessary, use a brush to scrub away dirt and grime), rinse and dry with a clean towel or cloth. For your cutting tools, you can scrub the blades with a rag soaked in alcohol to eliminate stubborn filth.

2. SHARPEN

Carefully sharpen all of your cutting tools with the help of a whetstone, metal file or grindstone. Pro tip: place

Planting

After the last of the season’s harvest and before the first frost, there are still many ways you can use plants of all kinds to enhance the beauty of your outdoor space. On that note, get your trowels ready!

BULBS

Make sure to plant autumn bulbs (crocuses, tulips, lilies, hyacinths, snowdrops, etc.) in a rich and well-drained soil. Dig holes three times the height of your bulbs (with the exception of tulip bulbs that prefer to spend the winter one foot below the ground). For optimal results, make sure to leave a space three times as large as each individual bulb between each plant.

TREES

Dig a hole deep enough to accommodate for the tree’s root ball with a dia-

Closing up the garden for winter

The harvest season is over, the flowers have wilted, the leaves have fallen — it’s time to close up the garden and prepare for winter! Not sure where to start? Here’s what you need to do:

• Remove pesky weeds and mix them in with your compost.

• Plow the earth to aerate the soil and expose harmful insect eggs, which will die with the cold.

• Fertilize your vegetables to better protect them against frigid weather and other harsh winter conditions.

• Cover the ground around your plants with good quality mulch.

your tool in a vice to ensure a steady hold while sharpening to reduce the risk of damage and personal injury.

3. PROTECT Apply a protective layer of lubricant, oil or grease on your tools’ springs and me tal surfaces to keep them from rusting over the winter.

meter that’s twice as large as the latter. Next, cut and remove the protective layer of burlap on the top half of the root clump. Place the tree in the hole, fill the cavity with quality soil and compact the earth. Psst! Did you know that garden centres offer worthwhile discounts on trees and shrubs in the fall? Take advantage before it’s too late!

PERENNIALS

Autumn is the perfect season for planting potted perennials sold in store. You can also take advantage of a beautiful cool day to divide your existing perennials. To do so, use a round metal shovel and follow these three simple steps:

1. Plunge the shovel vertically into the ground to avoid severing the roots.

2. Loosen the roots on all sides using repeated movements with your shovel.

3. Separate the roots with a gardening tool or spreading knife.

Once you’ve separated and transplanted your perennials, you’ll obtain new plants that will flourish in all their splendour come the warmer season!

• Protect your shrubs with burlap or white geotextile (avoid darkcoloured material).

• Rake the dead leaves around your property and mix them in with your compost or use them as an eco-friendly (and free!) alternative to store-boughtmulch.

• Prune your trees, trim your hedges, and don’t forget to remove the dead branches!

For additional information, consult a horticulturalist in a nursery or garden centre near you!

Bringing in your plants for the winter: a delicate process

Once the temperature borders 10 degrees Celsius at night, you should seriously start thinking about bringing your favourite plants indoors. But be careful: simply grabbing them by the pot and repositioning them in their usual spot within the home is a risky bet!

A sudden change in temperature can shock your plants and make them lose their leaves just days after they’ve been transferred back into the home. Therefore, it’s important to remain prudent when bringing your precious houseplants back indoors.

The solution? Acclimation! For one week, bring your plants in at night and take them back out during the day. After this period of adjustment, they’ll be more readily capable of surviving the winter inside your warm and cozy home.

WASH AND INSPECT

Before bringing in your plants, clean them with lukewarm water to get rid of stubborn debris (pollen, dirt, animal hair, etc.) and eliminate unwelcomed pests. Next, inspect them carefully, paying particular attention to each individual leaf. Cut and throw away any leaves that look infested, or manually remove visible bugs, larvae and eggs to ensure they don’t spread to neighbouring healthy plants.

Federal Government to Nix GST on New Rental Builds

Chestermere’s property market and potential renters could bene fit as Trudeau’s promise from 2015 comes to the fore.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to bring some relief to future tenants and the real estate market. According to an inside source, Trudeau will announce this Thursday that the federal government plans to remove the GST from the construction of new rental apartment buildings. This anticipated announcement has been eagerly awaited since it was initially promised during the Liberals’ 2015 election campaign.

This move is anticipated to lower the costs of both labour and materials for homebuilders, playing a significant part in Trudeau’s forthcoming affordability announcement. Alongside the Prime Minister, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, Housing Minister Sean Fraser, and Industry Minister FrançoisPhilippe Champagne will be present for the declaration in London, Ont.

This announcement emerges as the majority of Liberal MPs congregate in London for a three-day retreat. Their focus? Strategizing for the imminent Parliament session. This strategy becomes crucial as current poll numbers indicate a dwindling confidence among Canadians, with many believing the Conservatives might offer better solutions for housing and affordability concerns.

However, the federal announcement has garnered mixed reactions. Ontario’s government, for instance, has welcomed the decision, with plans to

drop provincial sales taxes. In contrast, the federal Conservatives, under the leadership of Pierre Poilievre, have been sceptical, questioning Trudeau’s commitment given the gap since the 2015 promise. Meanwhile, the NDP voiced their concerns about the length of time taken for this decision and whether luxury condos would benefit from the change.

Nevertheless, the Ontario Progressive Conservative cabinet has shown strong support. They have proposed to remove their portion of the HST on “purpose-built rental housing.” Housing advocates and city councils, having championed this change for years, are likely to see this as a win. Amid the political hustle and bustle, Halifax MP Andy Fillmore pointed out that the discussions at the caucus retreat largely centred around the challenges of affordability and improving communication about initiatives to help with the cost of living. Quebec MP Steve MacKinnon emphasized the importance of provincial support to stabilize the housing market after its surge. As the debate heats up and strategies form, one thing is clear: with these policy changes on the horizon, Chestermere’s housing market and potential renters might be in for an exciting period. The focus now shifts to the real-world implications of these policies once implemented.

10 inspiring trends for a stylish bathroom

Whether bathing, showering, styling or shaving, you probably spend a good amount of time in the bathroom every day. If you’re thinking about renovating your bathroom, you might as well take the opportunity to turn it into a pleasant and functional space. Short on furnishing and decorating ideas? Here are 10 trends to inspire you.

1. Glass baths and sinks. Whether translucent or frosted, a glass bath or sink will give your room a spectacular and prestigious look. Since you can see through them, make sure that what’s behind or underneath is stylish and tasteful.

2. Antiqued faucets. Contemporary faucets that imitate antiques are currently all the rage. Metallic shades, such as gold and brass, are among the most popular in decorating magazines.

3. Italian stone showers. Perfect for creating an organic and timeless look, large pale grey slabs of Italian stone are the perfect complement to serenity-inducing bathroom decor.

4. Suspended vanities. If you’re into minimalist style, this trend is sure to please. Suspended vanities, which look like they’re floating, create a serene atmosphere that’s highly sought-after for the bathroom.

5. Wall lights. Traditionally placed on either side of mirrors or above them, sconces are now being installed elsewhere in the bathroom as decorative accents.

6. Bold aquatic shades. Add life to your space with vibrant shades of blue or green reminiscent of the ocean. Play with ceramic tiles, picture frames and natural or artificial plants.

7. Round shapes. Circles and ovals help give the bathroom a soothing, light-hearted feel. Basins, vases and shower curtains are simple ways to embrace this trend.

8. Mirrors with integrated lighting. Practical and attractive, medicine cabinets and mirrors backlit with LED lights give your room a decidedly modern, even futuristic look.

9. Fluted textures. Curved or domed, in wood or ceramic, on vanity units or shower walls, fluted textures are attractive and create a sense of movement.

10. Large terrazzo tiles. This retro motif adds a touch of playfulness to bathroom countertops and floors, especially if the tiles are large or multicoloured.

Do any of these trends appeal to you? Visit your local plumbing, furnishing and home decor stores to create the perfect bathroom. For personalized advice and impeccable results, do business with an expert.

Examine the online ad and take note of important details like the dimensions, asking price and year of construction. Identify elements that are missing or require clarification. Prepare a list of questions to ask the owner or real estate agent so you don’t forget anything important.

the home’s potential and determine whether it’s right for you. Keep a positive attitude and ask yourself if a few repairs or upgrades could turn the space into the home you envision for yourself.

TAKE YOUR TIME

Homeownership is becoming increasingly difficult for younger generations. Does your child dream of buying a home but feel held back by high prices and interest rates? Would you like to help them? Here are four tips.

1. CONSIDER YOUR FINANCIAL SITUATION

Giving your child money toward their home purchase shouldn’t jeopardize your financial situation. Consult a financial planner before taking any steps to support your child. They’ll offer professional advice and help you determine what you need to do to maintain your lifestyle.

2. ESTABLISH AN EMERGENCY FUND

Although you want to do everything within your power for your child, it’s important to have a cash cushion to help you deal with the unexpected. Make sure you put enough money aside so you’re

prepared to deal with unforeseen expenses like healthcare, emergency home repairs or a change in marital status.

3. PREPARE FOR THE LONG TERM

It may take longer than expected for your child to pay you back. You may only get back a portion of what you lent them. Be prepared for any eventuality.

4. CONSULT A LAWYER FOR LEGAL DOCUMENTS

A lawyer can help you determine which legal documents you need and how to correctly fill them out. They’ll also inform you of any legal implications your monetary contribution could have if, for example, you suddenly pass away.

Before providing your child with financial assistance, ask yourself the right questions and contact a professional to guide you through the process.

KEEP AN OPEN MIND

Achieving your dream home may not necessarily be a case of love at first sight. You’ll likely need to visit the property to get a feel for

Real estate: what do land surveyors do?

Land surveyors are highly trained professionals who measure plots of land to identify boundaries. They’re well-versed in municipal bylaws and can help you determine which ones could affect your property. When buying land, a surveyor can help you understand where your property boundaries lie and what’s included.

IMPORTANT DOCUMENT

Although not always mandatory when buying a property, it’s a good idea to invest in a land survey before closing the deal. A land survey ensures you understand which plot you’re buying and protects your ownership rights if doubt should arise about who owns what portion of the land.

WHAT’S INCLUDED?

First, the surveyor examines the property’s legal description and analyzes the history of the deed and title. Next, the surveyor visits the property to measure where each boun-

Take the time to tour the entire property, including the attic, shed and garage. Peek under the sinks and inside the electrical box. Find out if any renovations have been done over the years. Take notes so you can gather your thoughts at the end of the tour. You may also want to check whether any amenities like public transportation, grocery stores and schools are within walking distance. Buying a home is a complex process. To make the experience easier, hire a professional to help you every step of the wayw

dary lies and records all the buildings or other structures on the property.

Using this information, the surveyor creates a map showing the legal boundaries of the property. The map includes a description of the land and buildings, the street address and the locations of neighbouring properties.

Ideally, you should contact a land surveyor at least 20 days before signing the deed of sale. Nevertheless, it’s recommended to consult this expert as soon as possible.

Chestermere Resident Scot Caithness Goes Green and Reaps Financial Rewards

Transition to solar power and heat pump installation not only reduces carbon footprint but also turns energy bills into credits.

Chestermere - It’s the dawn of a new era for Chestermere resident, Scot Caithness. Previously grappling with monthly energy bills averaging $365, post-installation of his new solar power system and heat pump, Caithness now boasts credit figures of -$240, -$180, and -$170 in successive months.

Determined to find the most suitable solar solution, Caithness embarked on a meticulous quest, albeit already favoring ICON Plumbing and Heating owing to his son’s association with the firm. Ultimately, while ICON took charge of the heat pump installation, YYC Solar assumed responsibility for the solar panels.

YYC Solar, standing as one of the unique local solar enterprises in Calgary, champions hassle-free, bespoke solar solutions that snugly fit the budget and requirements of its clients. The company’s promise is crystal clear: topnotch service, impeccable quality, and competitive pricing. With their seasoned crew, most installations are wrapped up within a day, translating to immediate savings for their clientele.

Meanwhile, ICON Plumbing and Heating Ltd. thrives on a foundation of family values. Dedicated to delivering success and a seamless experience, the team emphasizes the significance of hard work, positivity, and clear communication. Their unwavering honesty and integrity not only aid in forging relationships but also in fortifying them. The newly installed heat pump in Caithness’s residence promises dual advantages - consistent warmth during winter and refreshing coolness in summer.

Embracing the role of a micro generator, the system stands to accrue Carbon credits for its energy production. Predictions suggest an impressive 12 to 13 Megawatts of power generation this year, each Megawatt securing a carbon credit. Collaborating with Solar Offset Limited, these credits, at an estimated value of $100 per credit annually, significantly expedite the ROI for the system.

Furthermore, the partnership with Spot Power, a power Co-Op, guarantees equitable power buying and selling rates from the grid throughout the year.

For those curious about the cost metrics of such an endeavor:

Caithness availed of the Canada Greener Homes Grant Program, which has been championing energy-efficient home renovations since May 2021. This initiative, especially in Québec, aligns with the Rénoclimat program, offering

homeowners up to $5,000 for specific renovations aimed at energy efficiency and renewable energy measures.

The Canada Greener Homes Loan, an auxiliary wing of the grant, facilitated Caithness with a 10-year interest-free loan of $40,000, after a generous grant of $5,600.

Internal solar prewiring was executed within three hours. The solar panel installation, courtesy of two proficient teams, was achieved in just a day.

A minor setback ensued due to the wait for a two-way meter from Fortis.

Caithness’s venture serves as an inspiration, elucidating the environmental and financial benefits of sustainable energy choices. As homeowners seek greener alternatives, stories like Caithness’s shed light on the tangible advantages of making the shift.

Paco Jimenez had this to say about performing in the concert, “For me and my band it is a privilege to be able to be part of an event with humanitarian purposes in support of the people of Ukraine.”

Edin Solis of Editus commented, “Editus is happy and honored to be involved in this benefit concert to support the people of Ukraine and to see that other Costa Rican musicians are involved. These types of cultural events are a show of solidarity, bring countries together and create more public awareness. We strongly condemn this absurd war and stand in solidarity with those who are affected.”

Bruce Callow said, “This is going to be a fun concert for a serious purpose and we invite people everywhere to organize their own watch parties and collect donations. I want to thank all the bands for volunteering their time and to the Korzo pub in Lviv for allowing this event to happen.” Donations can be made in advance of the concert through the Canadian registered NGO Amigo Relief Missions, at the link below. Groundbreaking research reveals women are making extraordinary contributions to farming in Canada, yet continue to face significant challenges

National study replaces stereotypes with a foundation of facts

OTTAWA, Oct. 03, 2023

(GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A new era of understanding opportunities to advance Canadian agriculture is dawning as Farm Management Canada in partnership with CentricEngine release new research that sheds light on the crucial roles played by farm women in influencing farm success in Canada. This comprehensive research, titled “Expanding Opportunities for Canadian Agriculture by Understanding the Experience of Farm Women,” underscores the indispensable contributions of women and offers

a compelling narrative that highlights opportunities to foster a transformative shift in the industry by supporting the unique needs of farm women.

“Much has been said about the experience of women in farming, but little has been measured,” says lead researcher Maurice Allin, President of CentricEngine.

“This is the first national study to establish a framework for identifying the activities undertaken by farm women and understand their motivations, aspirations and challenges to create a foundation of facts

where none existed before.”

Results reveal women are making extraordinary contributions to farming in Canada with a high degree of involvement in virtually every aspect of the operation. Furthermore, there is a tremendous diversity of experiences among farm women.

“We were surprised to learn that rather than demographic or farmographic differences, it is the interactions and relationships with others that most influence the experience of farm women,” says research partner Bob Wilbur, Principal at RW Strategic Perspectives.

“Viewing the experience of farm women through a human-centred lens provides a clearer understanding of their situations and creates opportunities for more effective actions – we can now confirm a one-size-fits-all approach will not work.”

The research shows farm women continue to face significant challenges and barriers that need to be addressed. The level and satisfaction with communication about the farm proved to be a critical dimension in determining the nature of the experience of farm women. Other critical dimensions

44 October 09, 2023 Volume 23 No. 41 Chestermere Anchor News Magazine: Home Grown, Well Anchored, Reaching far beyond Chestermere’s Shores

include women feeling valued and supported with their skillsets utilized.

The Report offers over 30 recommendations presented under six (6) distinct groupings:

Support gender equity and equality initiatives in policy development, programming and governance

Create and enhance programming, development opportunities, and resources that specifically address the needs of farm women

Dedicate efforts beyond women in agriculture to focus exclusively on supporting farm women

Promote communication and interpersonal skills along with business management practices as essential components of farming

Expand existing research to more effectively capture data related to farm women (ex. Census)

Conduct additional research on the experience and contributions of farm women, factors that influence farm success, and a comparative study of farm men using the same human-centered lens

To celebrate the release of this research, Farm Management Canada will be hosting a panel discussion at its 2023 Agricultural Excellence Conference taking place November 21-23 in Guelph, Ontario. The session will feature presentations by the lead researchers and invited guests from the Canadian Federation of Agriculture and la Fédération des Agricultrices du Québec to explore how the findings of this research can inform policies, programs, and initiatives aimed at empowering farm women.

“We are excited to unveil this transformative research, which provides a roadmap for empowering Canada’s farm women,” says Heather Watson, Executive Director of Farm Management Canada. “By recognizing and supporting the unique needs of farm women, we can unlock tremendous potential for advancing Canada’s agricultural sector from the grassroots, paving the way for future generations of farmers in Canada.”

This research was made possible through the generous contributions of the project Steering Committee including representatives from the Maritime Agriculture Women’s

Network, la Fédération des Agricultrices du Québec, the Ag Women’s Network (Ontario), Ag Women Manitoba, Manitoba Women in Agriculture & Food, Women in Agriculture (Saskatchewan), Alberta Ag Women and BC Women in Ag. The research was funded by the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association, FCC, RBC, WS and the Government of Canada under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership led by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

The Report is accompanied by an Environmental Scan that helped inform the national study.

Lakeside Libations

Marvelous Mezcal

libations@theanchor.ca

Well-seasoned tipplers may have noticed that as globalization has accelerated over the past few decades, both local and international booze peddlers are upping their game. Gone are the days of the same old rotgut swill from the megabreweries and giant industrial spirits producers. Today, a seemingly limitless number of craft brewers and artisanal distillers have been cropping up, much to the delight of the imbibing public.

The Mexican spirit called Mezcal is no exception, with several new and exciting brands appearing on the market since my long-past days as a novice boozer.

For those not familiar with this particular tipple, Mezcal is a distilled spirit made from the Maguey plant, which primarily grows in the Mexican state of Oaxaca (pronounced wah-ka-ka for you gringos).

The Maguey plant has a long and storied past in Mexico, and was used to create a fermented beverage called

Pulque for thousands of years. However, when the Spanish conquistadors brought distillation technology to the New World in the 1500’s, the fermented sap of the Maguey plant was quickly discovered as a good candidate for distillation, thusly giving birth to the spirit we now know as Mezcal.

Similar to the standards used for the related spirit Tequila, there are four classifications of Mezcal. White Mezcal is crystal-clear and is not aged. This results in a fiercely harsh taste, similar to hillbilly moonshine. It is definitely an acquired taste only for a very few, and most people would do well to avoid this one.

Dorado is also unaged, but has a coloring agent added to impart a golden hue that makes it look like it has been aged in oak barrels. Again, this is a cheap spirit best avoided.

46 October 09, 2023 Volume 23 No. 41 Chestermere Anchor News Magazine: Home Grown, Well Anchored, Reaching far beyond Chestermere’s Shores

Reposado has been aged in wooden barrels for up to 9 months, which helps smooth out the harsh flavours, and generally make the drink more palatable. This is the grade that you will most often find in your local store, or at the disco bars in a Mexican all-inclusive resort. If you order a Mezcal cocktail, this will generally be the grade served up by the bartender.

Añejo is the highest grade of Mezcal, and has been aged in wooden barrels for at least 1 year, but more commonly 3 to 4 years. The barrel aging takes off the harsh edge, and helps impart smoke and vanilla flavours to the spirit. Since this is the most expensive grade of Mezcal, hiding the flavour in a mixed drink would be a tragic loss. Treat this fine Mezcal right by sipping it slowly, like a fine brandy or whisky.

The production of Mezcal starts with the harvesting of the Maguey plant, which can grow a single flower stalk up to 25 feet high. The leaves and roots are chopped off, then the heart of the plant is cooked for up to three days. The plant is then crushed and mashed to extract the juices, which are fermented, and then distilled to increase the alcohol percentage.

Various fruits, herbs, and other flavouring agents are added during the fermentation and distillation processes, resulting in a nearly limitless assortment of unique

variations between distillers.

If you have ever seen a liquor bottle with a worm in the bottom, you were looking at a bottle of Mezcal. To be more specific, it is actually the larva of the Hypota agavis moth, which often lives in the Maguey plant. Some distillers claim that the worm is used to add flavour or show that the Mezcal is authentic, but your humble narrator thinks it is just a marketing gimmick.

A common misconception is that Mezcal contains a hallucinogen called mescaline, likely due to the similarities in the names.

For those who didn’t spend their formative years in the sixties, mescaline is a naturally occurring substance in the Peyote Cactus, with psychedelic effects similar to LSD. However, since Mezcal comes from the Maguey plant, it contains absolutely no hallucinogenic compounds, so if you see purple unicorns after too much Mezcal, don’t blame it on a bad trip.

Of course, the Peyote cactus and Maguey plant grow side by side in the Mexican desert, so if you were into that sort of thing, you could certainly find both of them at the same time.

So, with the harsh winter months staring down at us, remind yourself of sunnier climes by picking up a bottle of Mezcal!

When it comes to air travel, the experience can vary significantly depending on your choice of class. While economy class provides the basics, flying business class elevates the journey to a whole new level. Beyond the plush seats and gourmet meals, there are numerous tangible benefits to consider.

On our last trip we travelled in Business Class. It’s definitely more expensive than flying in economy, but I thought I’d explain what you experience includes in this class of service. If you’re doing a long journey or have any longer connections, it can be the way to go. And, Business class passengers usually have a higher baggage allowance, meaning you can pack more without worrying about excess baggage fees. This is particularly advantageous for longer trips or when you need to carry essential items.

Flying business class typically includes priority check-in and boarding. This means you spend less time waiting in lines, allowing you to breeze through airport formalities and get to your seat faster. In some cities they have a separate Business Class check in area and security check that makes it very pleasant and easy to get through the airport quickly.

Business class passengers usually have access to exclusive airport lounges. These lounges offer a serene environment with comfortable seating, complimentary food and beverages, and facilities like showers and workspaces. It’s an oasis of tranquility in the midst of a bustling airport. For example, the lounge in Istanbul has lockers where you can store your belongings so you can go out and shop or just relax, knowing your belongings are safe. They have bedrooms you can reserve to have a real sleep, and there is local and North American food cooked right on site, TVs to watch, and a sports lounge. Of course, there are drinks of all kinds

and even authentic baklava! This is all complimentary with your business class ticket.

One of the most immediate benefits of flying business class is the increased comfort. Business class seats are wider, often recline fully into lie-flat beds, and come with ample legroom. Check out this video to see an example. This means you can stretch out, get a good night’s sleep, and arrive at your destination feeling refreshed. Our aircraft had all aisle pods, but some of the older planes have lie flat middle seats. You can check the configuration of your scheduled plane using Seatguru. com. Business class cabins are designed to provide a greater degree of privacy compared to economy. Some airlines offer individual pods or suites with closing doors, ensuring you can work, relax, or sleep without disruptions.

Business class cabins typically have a higher staff-to-passenger ratio, which means you receive more personalized service. Flight attendants are attentive and ready to cater to your needs, making you feel like a valued guest. You are welcomed on board with a cool drink (my favorite is the cherry pomegranate). After take-off you are presented with an amenity kit that contain high-quality skincare products, eye masks, earplugs, cozy socks and other essentials to enhance your in-flight comfort (the ones on our flight were Ferragamo pouches) and the chef comes by to explain the dinner options and answer any dietary concerns. Then you settle in with a movie, or a good book or a work project with a glass of your favorite beverage and a dish of warm nuts. Business class cabins are equipped with larger, high-definition screens and a wide selection of entertainment options. Whether you want to catch up on movies, TV shows, or workrelated presentations, you have plenty to choose from. If you’re a business traveler, flying business

class can significantly boost your productivity. Seats come with power outlets, USB ports, noise cancelling headphones and ample space to work on your laptop. Many airlines also provide WiFi access, allowing you to stay connected during the flight.

The culinary experience in business class is a world apart from economy. Passengers can enjoy gourmet meals prepared by renowned chefs, with a selection of fine wines and spirits. The dining experience is not just about sustenance; it’s a culinary journey. The appetizers are served from a cart so you can see what you might like to have.

The dessert is served like this as well and includes all types of delicacies as well as ice cream or fruit. Throughout the flight there are snacks and drinks whenever you’d like, and another hot meal is served before landing (long haul flights).

After dinner the steward comes and makes your bed with a super soft liner and blanket, and pillow in a soft pillowcase. Now you can lie flat and sleep, or just recline, put your feet up, put on their noise cancelling headphones and relax. The trip flies by when you’re comfy like this!

Some airlines even offer additional services upon arrival, such as expedited immigration

and customs clearance for business class passengers. This can save you valuable time, especially in busy airports. So yes, it’s a financial upgrade, but the benefits of travelling like this allow you to arrive at your destination refreshed and ready to go. The seats are designed to provide a better sleeping experience, helping you combat jet lag and arrive at your destination feeling more rested. On a long-haul flight, the ability to lie flat and sleep comfortably is priceless. If you have a limited number of vacation days, or just need to get going as soon as you arrive in your destination, the cost of an extra day to recover from travel, might justify the cost of business class travel.

In closing, flying business class is more than just a luxurious indulgence; it’s a strategic choice for travelers who prioritize comfort, productivity, and a stress-free journey. While it may come at a higher price point, the benefits, both tangible and intangible, can make it a worthwhile investment for those seeking a superior travel experience. Whether you’re traveling for business or leisure, flying business class can transform your journey into a memorable

Lakeside Greens Golf Course

MDP

September 25, 2023

I am writing to council members with regards to the potential development of the Lakeside Golf Course from a recreational land use zoning to residential/multifamily land use designation. I was in attendance at the “meeting” at the golf course on August 24th. I took pictures of the story boards and have studied them over and over since. It was a huge attendance and I think the people associated with each storyboard were overwhelmed with the number of questions. People were not hostile, they were frustrated including me. Responses to questions were evasive and most of the time were inconsistent in the messaging, contradicted other story boards and most of the time response was these are “not to scale” renderings. I totally get that but the way that the pictures were shown were not transparent at all. Before I go any further, you should know that I was a Director in a Company and involved in acquisitions and divestitures and large projects that the company wanted to develop and I was responsible for the regulatory application. We were always transparent and we listened to neighbors and surrounding commercial owners and if the project was not a good fit we recognized and changed our location or direction.

My Mom and Dad were one of the very first homeowners

to build on Lakeside Greens Drive. I asked my Mom and Dad why they built on the golf course and not a lot on the lake and they indicated that they loved the idea of the green space behind them, being able to golf and to watch their family and other golfers. Sometimes when family members were golfing the course Mom would have hot coffee and cinnamon buns ready for them when they got to the 7th hole. They also took a leap of faith that the golf course would be built as you can see there was not golf course started when they built. My parents loved to watch the golf course evolve and enjoyed chatting with golfers as they went by. They were part of the Lakeside Greens Homeowners Association for many many years.

Many of the council members prior to being voted in indicated that “not a blade of grass” will be affected and that they would not be in agreement to have the golf course bulldozed to build more houses. What is the legacy that you as council for Chestermere representing this City want to leave behind?

We have residential building everywhere now. New areas in Waterford, Chelsea, Dawson, Kinneburgh, South Shores and so much more residential building in Easthills. Why is there a need to have more development onto golf course land when all of these other areas are being heavily developed with a mix of zoning? The developers come and go. Developers are

only there to make significant payback but at what cost to the City and the future look? The City, the residents are always left to manage. We would be one of the only City’s that doesn’t have a golf course. You could say that a golf course in the City of Calgary had the exact same thing done to it and life went on. I know people that had their homes devalued and some left the area. The point is the City of Calgary has other courses, Chestermere does not.

As you drive or walk down West Chestermere Dr you see the ambiance of the golf course, the open green space. The residential development suggested in Parcel 3 on West Chestermere Dr. is tight spacing where townhomes or multi-family homes are developed on smaller lots and will look like high density development. I have nothing against multifamily building but there is plenty in the new areas and not taking out recreationally zoned land. There should be a restriction on these type of developments removing already viable green space that has recreational use unless its for additional recreational use.

If a “blade of grass” is allowed to be changed that means that it was allowed to change the zoning so why not continue and finally get the golf course redeveloped. This isn’t about beautifying our City, this isn’t about changing just a bit of the golf course land, this is about the owner of the golf course getting their way in the end to make money and run from Chestermere where they do not have to deal with the aftermath. Even council can leave and another come in and approve. If the developer came to council and said they wanted to drain the lake and develop all that

land what would be your response? I know it sounds like a far-fetched idea but so did the redevelopment of the golf course. Pretty sure you would say that it would change how people view our City and what draw others to be here. The golf course draws people to our community. The lake draws people to our community. Businesses draw people to our community. A vibrant beautiful City with open beautiful recreational green spaces. There is so much more potential for the golf course but it seems that the owners are not interested in that, they are only interested in getting their money out and leaving the future mess to the City.

I’m all for responsible development but this isn’t it and it’s not the legacy that Chestermere wants to have. You have a choice to say no to this development. Please represent the people of Chestermere responsibly. Should you have any questions of what I’ve written please contact me directly.

TOP 8 REASONS to advertise

IT’S A FACT: when consumers feel personally connected to an advertisement, they’re more likely to support your business. Here are 8 good reasons to allocate an advertising budget.

1. INCREASE TRAFFIC. Consumers are more likely to visit a business after seeing an advertisement — and more consumers mean more sales!

2. IMPROVE YOUR IMAGE. Dynamic and engaging advertisements attract consumers, no matter how strained the economic situation or how stiff the competition.

3. ATTRACT NEW CUSTOMERS. The market is always changing, and new consumers are constantly popping up in your region. There you go, a new target audience to inform that your business has what they want.

4. BUILD CUSTOMER LOYALTY. Once-loyal customers may drift away as their options multiply. By advertising, not only do you instill a sense of belonging and trust, but you also encourage them to remain loyal to you.

5. IMPROVE YOUR COMPETITIVE EDGE. The hard truth is that a limited number of consumers are willing to buy your products. Advertising is the best way to convince them that your products are THE best, no matter what the competition says.

6. STAY TOP OF MIND. When you advertise your products, you alert potential customers to your products or services. This increases the likelihood that they’ll think of you when they need the products or services you offer.

7. INFORM THE PUBLIC. When you launch a new product, for example, advertising allows potential customers to find out about it without having to do research.

8. INCREASE REVENUE. Effective advertising attracts customers to your business and improves sales. In short, it increases your success!
