alloween has been at the forefront of children’s thoughts for weeks now, but for most parents, the preparations for the big night and the purchase of candies for eager trick-or-treaters are just beginning.

The average household is poised to allocate anywhere from $25 to $40 for Halloween candies. But with the escalating cost of living and the holiday landing on a Tuesday this year, the total expenditure remains uncertain. Regardless of the final tally, it’s clear that this money won’t stretch as far as it once did.

Enter “shrinkflation,” a silent and subtle disruptor that has infiltrated the Halloween candy aisle this year, affecting the purchasing power of Halloween enthusiasts. This phenomenon often escapes notice until you unwrap the package.

For instance, Reese’s, a perennial favourite, now comes in bite-sized portions that might appease toddlers but leave the rest of us yearning for more. The ever-popular “Rockets” have been reduced to incredibly miniature sizes, and some Halloween M&M packages contain just two pieces! As Halloween is a once-a-year celebration and candies grace the shelves only briefly, these shrinkflation strategies are more conspicuous and startling to consumers this year.

It’s customary to disregard minor reductions in product sizes as they happen gradually over time. Manufacturers frequently diminish quantities while maintaining steady prices, driven by the mounting cost of production.

For instance, cocoa futures have reached a 44-year high, primarily due to production issues in Western Africa and other global regions. Consequently, significant buyers have had to renegotiate contracts and pay more, impacting the cost of Halloween chocolate. It is anticipated that cocoa futures will continue influencing chocolate prices in the months ahead, solidifying shrinkflation as an ongoing concern.

Another hurdle facing Halloween candy is the surge in sugar prices, reaching their highest levels since 2011.

Further, a labour dispute has disrupted a Vancouverbased plant owned by Lantic-Robers since September 28.

Reports of shortages are already surfacing, and commercial bakers are being encouraged to curtail their purchases.

If this labour dispute persists, consumers may soon find themselves asked to limit their purchases as well. Such a situation should discourage stockpiling, especially during a period of significant food inflation.

Now, when it comes to chocolate and sugar, both are considered non-essential commodities. While the impact on Halloween candy is undeniable, there’s no need for alarm. However, many food businesses, bakeries, and manufacturers regularly rely on these ingredients. So expect price adjustments in the months ahead, affecting upcoming holidays such as Christmas, St. Valentine’s Day, Easter, and more.

In a peculiar turn of events, a substantial portion of people’s budgets is expected to be directed toward costumes this year, more so than in previous years. In fact, experts predict that many Canadians will increase their overall Halloween spending, with Barbie-themed costumes gaining popularity. The Barbie craze has captivated both children and adults, inspiring extravagant costumes that contribute to the uptick in Halloween expenses.

Ultimately, Halloween is all about enjoyment and indulgence, and the smaller candies may just encourage children to knock on more doors this year in pursuit of their favourite treats. While it’s essential to remain mindful of shrinking portions and rising prices, the joy of Halloween remains undiminished.

After all, when it comes to candy, a little extra effort to collect it may not be such a bad thing. So, let the spooky season commence, and savour the thrill of Halloween with a grin as big as any candy bar!

n Chestermere, we see ourselves as a microcosm of Alberta’s broader economic and political landscape, and now, our dinner table and coffee shop discussions take a break from the plethora of municipal issues as Alberta’s politicians reconvene in the legislature. The centre of conversation and concern? The government’s controversial proposal to extricate itself from the Canada Pension Plan (CPP).

Premier Danielle Smith’s forthcoming legislation, which emphasizes the necessity of a referendum before Alberta can bid farewell to the CPP, has caused ripples across the province. However, what remains in question is the direct impact on Chestermere’s residents and its vibrant small business community.

Chestermere, which thrives on its small businesses, may feel the repercussions of the legislation if it comes to pass.

A potential exodus from the CPP might lead to uncertainties for retirement plans, impacting both the business owners and their employees. The promised taxpayer protection bill, which seeks to mandate a referendum before any introduction of future personal or corporate income taxes, could be a two-edged sword. While it may provide a safeguard against abrupt taxation, it might also slow down rapid fiscal responses in times of economic needs.

Chestermere Man Charged After Altercation with Peace Officer :

Incident stems from multiple confrontations involving filming and perceived intimidation on the highway.

A

recent dispute between a Chestermere resident and a peace officer has culminated in charges being filed against the resident, bringing the matter to public attention.

On August 12th, a member of the Sheriff Highway Patrol was engrossed in routine traffic enforcement duties when he noticed he was being filmed by a man seated in a car parked behind him. The situation was further aggravated when the man brazenly showed the officer the middle finger, as detailed in a statement shared by the RCMP on Wednesday.

The very same day, during a different traffic stop, the officer was again approached by the individual, this time coming startlingly close to the patrol car. The proximity of his parking raised immediate alarms for the on-duty sheriff.

Things took an unexpected turn when, during yet another traffic stop, the man, now in a wheelchair, positioned himself directly behind the officer, choosing to halt in 8

a merge lane. Continuing his recording, his loud and seemingly agitated commentary added to the tense atmosphere.

Intriguingly, while the sheriff managed the traffic stop, the individual took the initiative to converse with the driver who had been halted, leading to a backup call by the officer, sensing a potential escalation.

The culmination of these events led to the arrest of the 40-year-old Chestermere local, Dwight Nathaniel Domino.

Charges against him include obstruction of a peace officer, intimidation through both following and blocking a highway, and watching and besetting.

Following a bail hearing, Domino was granted release. He is set to make his appearance at the Alberta Court of Justice in Chestermere come November 7th. This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the unpredictability peace officers can face, even during routine duties.

n Oct. 24, the distinguished C.D. Howe Institute released its Report Card for Canada’s Senior Governments, 2023. According to this year’s report card, which grades the ability of governments to provide strong economic management and fulfill budget promises, Alberta’s government earned an A+, while the federal government barely earned a C-. And that trend is expected to continue, with the Institute predicting that “Ottawa will get a C next year and Alberta will top the class again with an A+.”

Our United Conservative government’s prudent fiscal policies have allowed Alberta to top the charts in fiscal accountability, resulting in Albertans having the best takehome wages in the country, paying the lowest taxes, and having more economic freedom and opportunity than

their provincial counterparts. While others – especially the federal government – have faltered, Alberta is standing tall.

With a new legislative session beginning this week, this recognition of our province’s remarkable track-record is timely. Receiving the highest possible grade from a top Canadian research institute reflects our government’s commitment to making life better for everyday Albertans.

As we embark on this new session, our United Conservative government remains committed to keeping life affordable, growing and diversifying the economy, fixing the health care system, and standing up against hostile policies from Ottawa.

Last week, good news came for Alberta’s livestock producers, who are vital to our province’s economy. It has been a tough growing season with challenges due to dry conditions causing many of our farmers and ranchers to face extraordinary costs. To help them through this difficult time, the governments of Alberta and Canada are partnering on a 2023 Canada-Alberta Drought Livestock Assistance response. Funding for this joint AgriRecovery initiative is cost-shared through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, with the federal government providing $99 million and Alberta’s government providing $66 million. Program details are still being finalized with the Government of Canada, and more information will be available soon.

Crows Feet Birding with Don & Elaine A Bicycle Birder Morning

T

here are times when the need for combining exercise, birding and enjoying the surprises nature brings surfaces. This is inevitably the case in September, when the morning temperatures are cool and its freshness invigorates both body and soul. Rusty Red is emptied, the back seat is converted cargo space: The helmet, cycling gloves and “Rockhopper”, my mountain bike, are loaded.

Thirteen miles later, parked at Ralph Klein Environmental Park, gear is unloaded, my backpack is stocked with a camera, a notepad, iced tea, a tire pump and a spare tire tube. Sunglasses and cycling gloves are on and the canal trail beckons, right after picking a few tiny pears from a park tree to munch on while riding.

In minutes, heading north through Shepard, crossing the railway tracks and into an industrial part of Calgary, the Western Irrigation District canal comes into view. Turning west, the bicycle tires are now on the asphalt covered north side of the path that follows the canal, leading to the section of the river, where Bow River water enters the irrigation system. Both sides of the canal are dotted with industrial buildings and trailer truck storage lots. The railway tracks are busy with trains heading east, loaded with C-cans and grain cars. It can be noisy at times when the train engines and truck traffic crossing the overpasses combine into a roar.

Then silence. Cycling slowly, listening and looking for waterfowl, waterbirds, shorebirds, perching birds and corvids, I am in my immediate “heaven”. Greater Yellow Legs tip teapot-like, foraging along the canal edge. Small groups of Mallards and Common Goldeneye, well aware of my presence, move upstream and away from the canal banks. European Starlings emit a variety of sounds, flying from a favourite treetop then across the canal to perch on power poles. A pair of Double Crested Cormorants, most wary indeed, explode into a running takeoff on the canal, fleeing my impending presence. They circle about, finding a safe spot in the opposite direction of the Rockhopper.

The Glenmore Inn is in sight. I know I have ridden about 10 miles, but have the urge to continue on. Crossing a canal bridge, heading upstream, I hope to see a Hooded Merganser, my goal for this ride. Rank odours, strong enough to make a skunk flee in panic, emanate from two industrial buildings, so increasing the cycling speed becomes a priority. Tucked on the north side of the canal within the trees are makeshift shelters of homeless individuals.

Rounding a corner, three small waterfowl floating downstream are visible in the clear water. Mission accomplished. Hooded Mergansers!

The relaxing, joyous and peaceful return Ralph Klein Park extends the pleasure of the four hour adventure. Looking at my written bird list, 23 species have shared a moment of their lives.

A mule deer buck has offered a mildly interested glance while grazing. Mind and body are at rest. Memories are made. Good weather is forecast. A return cycle awaits.

Will young Canadians ever be able to retire?

Persistent inflation, higher interest rates and reports of unemployment and underemployment continue to be common. Retirement may feel particularly unachievable for this cohort as workplace pensions become increasingly rare, even for those who are able to find work that is rewarding and fulfilling.

So, how will an entire generation save enough money to retire comfortably? Here is a roundup: Workplace plans If you have access to a company plan, how much income will it generate in retirement? A defined benefit plan offers a guaranteed income for the rest of the retiree’s life, depending on length of time you worked at the company. A definedcontribution pension puts more risk on the individual, with the employer matching individual contributions; funds are then invested in the market and the individual controls the level of risk.

Tax-sheltered savings An important part of retirement income planning is individual savings. Common options include registered retirement savings plans, which defer taxes until after the funds are withdrawn, or tax-free savings accounts, in which after-tax dollars can be invested and grown tax-free.

Savvy investments Another possible pillar of your retirement income may involve investing in non-registered methods, like on the stock market without a registered account or in real estate. These can sometimes come with big rewards, but also have risks.

mong the myriad of illnesses that can affect us, respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, may not always be top of mind. However, understanding RSV is vital, particularly for older adults, as this common yet highly contagious virus can have severe consequences.

Often perceived as an ailment primarily afflicting children in daycare or communal settings, RSV can, in fact, make anyone ill. Older adults are particularly susceptible to serious infections, with a significant portion of RSV-related deaths occurring in those aged 65 and above.

Increased Vulnerability Several factors contribute to the heightened risk older adults face from RSV. Underlying conditions commonly seen in adults, such as diabetes, heart disease, or lung ailments, can amplify the potential for severe RSV-related complications.

Even individuals without chronic health issues are more susceptible to infections and health challenges as they age.

This vulnerability stems from the natural decline in the effectiveness of the immune system, mirroring the gradual decline of vision and metabolism in aging individuals.

Typically, the immune system peaks during young adulthood and then embarks on a gradual descent, leaving older adults more prone to infections and their associated complications.

Additionally, immunity acquired from prior exposure to RSV wanes over time, increasing the risk of repeated infections.

The Search for Solutions While efforts are underway to develop preventative measures for RSV, including vaccines, there is currently no vaccine or specific treatment available for adults in Canada.

Moreover, as mentioned, immunity stemming from prior exposure to RSV is relatively short-lived, allowing reinfection.

Protecting Yourself Despite these challenges, there are steps older Canadians can take to reduce their risk of RSV. Practicing general infection control measures can make a significant difference.

These measures include frequent handwashing, avoiding touching one’s face, covering coughs and sneezes in public, regular disinfection of frequently touched surfaces, and maintaining distance from individuals who are unwell.

Vaccination is an essential element in the fight against RSV, and staying informed about developments in RSV prevention is crucial. By taking proactive measures and staying informed, older Canadians can help safeguard their health and wellbeing in the face of this often underestimated virus.

As research continues and new measures are explored, the importance of RSV awareness remains paramount. In an era of evolving healthcare challenges, staying informed is the first line of defense.

Don’t get swept up among the leaves and the myths of the fall real estate market. If you’re thinking about listing your home for sale, we dispel some common misconceptions, and share some helpful tips to help turn that “For Sale” sign to “Sold.

Curb appeal doesn’t matter in the fall real estate market.

False! Summer may have come to an abrupt end, but that doesn’t mean your home’s exterior should fall by the wayside (pun intended!). Curb appeal counts, regardless of the season.

During the autumn months, ensure walkways and gutters are cleared of leaves and debris, the lawn is mowed and trees are neatly trimmed. Take your exterior a step further with some hearty landscaping that can weather the cooler temperature.

The weather is cold, and so is your home.

When summer inevitably comes to an end, the first sign will be the plummeting temperatures outdoors. Just because it’s cooler outdoors doesn’t mean your home décor needs to reflect that! Consider a fresh coat of paint in a warmer shade, and don’t be afraid to bring the temperature up a couple degrees to make your guests feel comfortable. If you don’t want to make a large change, a few additions like cozy pillows or throws can go a long way to show the comfort of your home during the cooler months.

Fact: Second only to a kitchen and bathroom reno (which can be pricey), a fresh coat of paint gives you the best return on your investment on the resale market.

Buyers pay less attention to price.

Wrong! Price is always a key factor for homebuyers and sellers alike, and pricing your home incorrectly is the biggest mistake you can make when selling in the fall. Landing on the right list price can be complicated, depending on a number of factors such as season (that’s right!), and market factors such as supply, demand and economic conditions. If you’re wondering what your home is worth in your local resale market, work with an experienced real estate agent. A RE/MAX agent will help ensure your home is priced correctly.

You’re sold, you’re done.

The papers are signed and the deal is done, so all that’s left to do is pack up and move, right? Not quite. Remember that people get busy in the fall, which means you may find yourself short when it comes time to pack, or booking a company to help you move. Even family and friends may be hard to nail down for a day of lugging furniture. To eliminate these issues, plan well in advance. Make sure your moving date is scheduled firm in everyone’s calendar, and plan ahead to ensure you aren’t left without a solution if someone has to back out.

A stress free move will make a world of difference in the first couple days in your new home.

Now that you know the common myths about the fall real estate market, you can tackle these small projects in preparation for the fall selling season. Despite the cool weather, it’s bound to be a hot one!

ell-seasoned tipplers may have noticed that as globalization has accelerated over the past few decades, both local and international booze peddlers are upping their game. Gone are the days of the same old rotgut swill from the megabreweries and giant industrial spirits producers. Today, a seemingly limitless number of craft brewers and artisanal distillers have been cropping up, much to the delight of the imbibing public.

The Mexican spirit called Mezcal is no exception, with several new and exciting brands appearing on the market since my long-past days as a novice boozer.

For those not familiar with this particular tipple, Mezcal is a distilled spirit made from the Maguey plant, which primarily grows in the Mexican state of Oaxaca (pronounced wah-ka-ka for you gringos).

Pulque for thousands of years. However, when the Spanish conquistadors brought distillation technology to the New World in the 1500’s, the fermented sap of the Maguey plant was quickly discovered as a good candidate for distillation, thusly giving birth to the spirit we now know as Mezcal.

White Mezcal is crystal-clear and is not aged. This results in a fiercely harsh taste, similar to hillbilly moonshine. It is definitely an acquired taste only for a very few, and most people would do well to avoid this one.

Sources, including the Los Angeles Times and TMZ, reported that Perry was discovered dead from an apparent drowning at his residence in Los Angeles. Notably, TMZ was first to bring this somber news to the public. While the specifics surrounding his death remain under investigation, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed they responded to a “death investigation of a male in his 50s” at what was recognized as Perry’s address.

Last week, Paul and I were aboard Lindblad’s Endeavour II, an expedition ship that sails in the Galapagos Islands. Nestled in the azure waters of the Pacific Ocean, the Galapagos Islands stand as a living testament to the marvels of evolution and the astonishing beauty of untouched nature. The only Marine Iguanas in the world call the Galapagos home. You can watch them sunning themselves on the rocky shores and diving into the crystal-clear waters to feed on underwater algae.

Galapagos Penguins: These diminutive penguins are the only ones to inhabit the Northern Hemisphere. Snorkeling alongside these playful birds is a once-in-alifetime experience.

Marvel at the Flightless Cormorants, a unique species that has adapted to a life of swimming and diving. Their striking appearance and underwater agility are a testament to evolution’s wonders.

An Expedition Cruise to the Galapagos Photos & Words by Paul & Diane

The Galapagos consist of 19 major islands, each with its own distinct landscapes and ecosystems. A well-planned expedition cruise will take you to a variety of these islands, offering a diverse range of experiences. We are visiting these islands: Santa Cruz: We visited the Charles Darwin Research Station to learn about ongoing conservation efforts and see the famous Lonesome George, the last Pinta Island tortoise. We spent some time in town before continuing to the highlands where we explored the cultural and natural attractions of the highlands of Santa Cruz, where much of the produce is grown on local farms. We stopped for lunch at a local ranch, dedicated to conservation. This was an amazing opportunity to see tortoises roaming in the wild.

Isabela is the largest island in the archipelago is home to the iconic Sierra Negra volcano. We hiked to the caldera’s rim for panoramic views of the surreal, moon-like landscape. In the afternoon the ship re-positioned to the historical Tagus Cove, a sheltered bay that has been a popular anchorage for centuries of visitors, including Charles Darwin on the HMS Beagle. There we could choose a scenic hike that looked over a volcanic crater with

a lake inside, Zodiac rides and kayaking outings to look for penguins, flightless cormorant and shorebirds, and even some deep-water snorkeling. So many options!

Fernandina Island is the youngest and most pristine island in the Galápagos. The stark black lava flows are home to some of the largest marine iguana colonies in the archipelago, and the peculiarlooking flightless cormorant nest along the coast. Brightly colored Sally Lightfoot crabs scamper among the rocks and sea lions play along the coast against the dramatic backdrop of volcanoes. While snorkeling in the area, we were on the lookout for green sea turtles who graze off the abundant algal beds.

In San Cristóbal we visited Punta Pitt with its fascinating geology, also the only site where all three booby species that occur in the Galápagos nest together. We hiked up to the plateau for wonderful views and took Zodiac cruises along the base of the cliffs to look for red-footed, Nazca and blue-footed boobies, and could even have taken a swim off the beach amongst young sea lions.

the largest turtle nesting beaches in Galápagos, we explored the spectacular Buccaneer Cove by Zodiac and kayak and enjoyed snorkeling among the dense schools of reef fish that find refuge in the indented shoreline. A visit to Puerto Egas led us through a fascinating geological landscape of mixed ash and lava flows, tidal pools, and grottoes. Inhabiting the area, we found Galápagos sea lions and fur seals, marine iguanas, land and shore birds, and brilliant Sally Lightfoot crabs.
