4 moving November 11 traditions Held each year on November 11, Remembrance Day is an opportunity to pay tribute to the men and women who fought on behalf of Canada to defend its values of freedom. On this solemn day, several commemorative events take place from coast to coast. Here are some of the moving traditions associated with these gatherings.

1. Reading the Ode of Remembrance. This is an excerpt from Laurence Binyon’s poem For the Fallen. Full of sadness and gratitude, this moving text was written in 1914 following the deaths of thousands of young soldiers.

2. Minutes of silence. At 11 a.m. on Remembrance Day, the public is invited to stand in silence for two minutes and pay tribute to the courage of those who have served and are still serving.

3. Laying wreaths. In many cities and municipalities, it’s customary to place wreaths at the foot of veteran memorials. The flowers used have different meanings, such as gratitude, hope and resistance. Tulips, forgetme-nots and daisies are popular choices.

4. Wearing poppies. Since 1921, the poppy has been a national symbol of Remembrance Day. It’s also the symbol of the Royal Canadian Legion’s Poppy Campaign, which raises funds to support veterans and their families. Wearing the poppy on November 11 is a gesture of solidarity and respect.

VS Chestermere Claims Progress on Directives Amid Ongoing Legal Battle Chestermere Residents beginning to tire of continuous re-speak

C

hestermere is once again embroiled in a contentious clash with Municipal Affairs. Residents, many of whom are tiring of what they term “re-speak” from city hall, watch with bated breath as their elected officials lock horns with provincial authorities.

Mount Royal University political scientist Lori Williams, a keen observer of these unfolding events, raises concerns. While newly elected governments often enjoy a honeymoon period, she fears this might be a short-lived grace for Chestermere’s current council. “Considering the increasingly adversarial stance the city has taken against the inspection report and the government, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is a council that’s headed for dissolution,” she remarks.

In a dramatic show of unity against the Municipal Affairs, the majority voting bloc of Chestermere City Council has vowed to back the Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs) in a legal feud. During the October 31st Council Meeting, the council showcased their staunch belief that CAOs should have the necessary latitude to work in their municipalities’ best interests.

This support isn’t just verbal; it’s financial. Chestermere City Council has approved the use of unused budgeted funds from the 2023 budget, tapping into a surplus of $6 million. This move ensures that the city is financially armed to tackle any legal impediments that might come their way.

Mayor Jeff Colvin fervently defends the Council’s position, stating, “Our city’s future is paramount. This decision to back the CAO’s legal venture underlines our dedication to Chestermere and its residents. We stand firm in our

commitment to local governance principles. Our aim is to ensure Chestermere’s continued growth and prosperity.”

The ongoing court case against Municipal Affairs, revolving around the inspection and the subsequent Cuff Report, is expected to heat up in the coming months. The City of Chestermere is not just challenging the investigation findings but is also vying for the removal of the Official Administrator.

The backdrop to this showdown? A municipal inspection, ordered in May 2022, concluded in March, which found city management in an “irregular, improper, improvident” manner. Mayor Colvin, alongside his majority voting bloc and city administrators, has persistently denounced this inspection as biased.

While the province acknowledges the legal challenge, it has refrained from commenting since the application’s initiation.

In this intense game of municipal chess, three councillors - Shannon Dean, Sandy Johal-Watt, and Ritesh Narayan - stand out. These individuals, whose grievances initially sparked the inspection, have repeatedly challenged the city’s moves. In the recent Tuesday meeting, both Dean and Narayan reiterated their opposition.

As the city and the province brace for a legal showdown, Chestermere residents can only hope for a resolution that prioritizes their interests. With political experts like Williams predicting possible dissolution and a relentless City Council, the future seems uncertain. Chestermere now waits, with hope and apprehension, for the next move in this high-stakes standoff.

Chestermere’s Political Crossroads: UCP’s Rightward Shift Sparks Reflection Among Loyalists Is this the UCP Chestermere-Strathmore voted for, or is the party charting an uncertain path?

I

n the heart of Alberta, nestled within the boundaries of the Chestermere-Strathmore riding, a historically staunch supporter of the United Conservative Party (UCP) and the preceding Wildrose Party, a simmering concern brews. With the UCP leaning further to the right than ever before, residents are left wondering: “Are we getting what we voted for?”

At the recent UCP convention in Calgary, members voted with near unanimity on several hard-right policy resolutions, such as refusing to house trans women in women’s prisons and requiring parental notification if a child wants to change their pronouns. Similar policies have already ignited controversies in New Brunswick and Saskatchewan.

Further, the party has shown keen interest in eradicating diversity and inclusion offices at tertiary institutions, banning safe drug consumption sites, and eschewing electronic vote tabulators due to suspicions of electoral manipulation.

These proposed policies represent a stark departure from established provincial norms. If Premier Danielle Smith were to heed these recommendations, it would signal a massive paradigm shift. However, Smith, who took over from Jason Kenney, has played down these resolutions, emphasizing that the government serves all Albertans.

While she promised to consult stakeholders outside the party’s base before any decisions, the rift between party hardliners and moderates seems to be widening.

The issue of parental rights in schools, particularly concerning transgender children, remains a focal point.

While Smith alluded to the importance of parental rights in her leader’s speech, her intentions remain unclear.

Saskatchewan and New Brunswick’s hardline stances have spurred significant backlash, resulting in political upsets and

legal challenges.

Although Smith has voiced personal convictions supporting the LGBTQ community, the UCP’s unanimous stance on this matter suggests she might be compelled to act. However, she seems inclined towards a more tempered approach, striving to balance parental rights with the protection and support of children.

Many UCP grassroots supporters, some of whom have actively protested against gender identity discussions in schools, hold strong views on these issues. But there’s a rising concern: will the UCP’s far-right shift alienate its moderate base, especially in places like ChestermereStrathmore?

History paints a cautionary tale for Smith. As the former Wildrose leader, she faced backlash in 2012 for not taking action against a candidate’s homophobic remarks. In 2014, a convention vote against LGBTQ rights further fractured the party. Today’s UCP, a merge between the Progressive Conservative Party and Wildrose, seems to be experiencing an exodus of its moderates. This year’s convention was marked by an overwhelming vote against so-called “woke” issues, while only a handful warned against potential discrimination.

This ideological shift is further underscored by the popularity of merchandise bearing slogans like “More Alberta, less Ottawa” – a clear nod to the two-decades-old Alberta firewall letter.

For Chestermere-Strathmore residents, it’s a waiting game. With an evolving political landscape and a party grappling with its identity, the real question is whether the UCP’s vision aligns with that of its constituents. If not, it could reshape the region’s political allegiance in upcoming elections.

Chestermere Drivers Reap Benefits from Alberta’s New Auto Insurance Reforms Caps, Payment Plans, and Premium Returns Promise Relief for Good Drivers

T

he Alberta government has announced sweeping reforms to the province’s auto insurance system, and local drivers in Chestermere may soon feel the relief.

With climbing inflation rates and rising costs of living, these changes come as a beacon of hope for many Chestermere residents who maintain good driving records.

At the heart of these reforms is a proposed cap on insurance premiums tied directly to the inflation rate for drivers with commendable records. This month’s inflation rate stands at 3.7%. With the cost of nearly everything going up, this move offers a semblance of predictability for responsible motorists in Chestermere and throughout Alberta.

Danielle Smith, Premier of Alberta, underscored the significance of these reforms. “I recognize the mounting pressures of insurance rates on our citizens. As inflation and affordability concerns intensify, our commitment is to introduce measures that aren’t just immediate relief but are sustainable for the future,” she stated.

Beyond the cap, the Alberta government is also mandating more flexible payment options. Insurers will soon be required to offer payment plans, relieving Albertans of the burden of paying their entire insurance premium upfront.

This move is especially beneficial for Chestermere families budgeting their monthly expenses.

Furthermore, if the insurance industry sees bumper years of high profits, the Alberta’s Automobile Insurance Rate Board will now have the authority to direct those companies to return a portion of the premiums back to Albertans. It’s a way of ensuring that insurance companies share their success with the policyholders.

For Chestermere residents wondering about potential spikes in rates next year, there’s more good news. All rate hikes in 2024 will undergo rigorous scrutiny to ensure they are both reasonable and justified.

While these changes are undoubtedly promising, the government’s message remains clear: Albertans, including those in Chestermere, should continue to shop around.

n Oct. 24, the distinguished C.D. Howe Institute released its Report Card for Canada’s Senior Governments, 2023. According to this year’s report card, which grades the ability of governments to provide strong economic management and fulfill budget promises, Alberta’s government earned an A+, while the federal government barely earned a C-. And that trend is expected to continue, with the Institute predicting that “Ottawa will get a C next year and Alberta will top the class again with an A+.”

Our United Conservative government’s prudent fiscal policies have allowed Alberta to top the charts in fiscal accountability, resulting in Albertans having the best takehome wages in the country, paying the lowest taxes, and having more economic freedom and opportunity than

their provincial counterparts. While others – especially the federal government – have faltered, Alberta is standing tall.

With a new legislative session beginning this week, this recognition of our province’s remarkable track-record is timely. Receiving the highest possible grade from a top Canadian research institute reflects our government’s commitment to making life better for everyday Albertans.

As we embark on this new session, our United Conservative government remains committed to keeping life affordable, growing and diversifying the economy, fixing the health care system, and standing up against hostile policies from Ottawa.

Last week, good news came for Alberta’s livestock producers, who are vital to our province’s economy. It has been a tough growing season with challenges due to dry conditions causing many of our farmers and ranchers to face extraordinary costs. To help them through this difficult time, the governments of Alberta and Canada are partnering on a 2023 Canada-Alberta Drought Livestock Assistance response. Funding for this joint AgriRecovery initiative is cost-shared through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, with the federal government providing $99 million and Alberta’s government providing $66 million. Program details are still being finalized with the Government of Canada, and more information will be available soon.

I

n what could be a major hurdle for Alberta, Federal Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland has outlined the intricate process that the province would have to navigate if it decides to exit the Canada Pension Plan (CPP). Speaking after a virtual meeting with provincial finance ministers, Freeland detailed the ramifications of Alberta taking such a step, emphasizing that the province would need to undertake a “complex and multi-year process” to negotiate international social security agreements.

This challenge arises for Albertans who have spent parts of their careers working abroad. While Canada already has 60 such agreements, Alberta would be starting from scratch.

As a point of reference, Quebec, which has its own pension plan, has brokered agreements with 39 countries.

Minister Freeland, who identifies as a “proud daughter of Alberta,” brought to light other considerations both the Alberta and federal governments would have to ponder if Premier Danielle Smith pulls the province from the federal retirement framework. “Of course Alberta has the right to withdraw,” noted Freeland, “But such a decision impacts every single Canadian.”

The broader national sentiment resonates with the

feedback Freeland has been receiving. Many Albertans have voiced their concerns about such a drastic change.

Responding to this, she has tasked the chief actuary with calculating the “asset transfer” based on a judicious interpretation of the CPP legislation.

Addressing the media during Friday’s briefing, Minister Freeland elucidated the broader concerns tied to Alberta forging its path. Amid “geopolitical uncertainty” and “global economic uncertainty,” she believes that the timing couldn’t be more challenging.

Alberta’s rationale for considering such a shift is its belief that its workers have disproportionately contributed to the national fund. The Alberta government posits that the province could realize substantial savings and payouts by leaving the CPP. Premier Smith, initially considering a 2025 referendum on the topic, has now hit the pause button, awaiting a clear figure on Alberta’s potential gains upon leaving the CPP. Whether these economic benefits can offset the complexities outlined by Minister Freeland remains a crucial question for Alberta’s future.

(NC) Artificial intelligence, or AI, has become a hot-button topic as generative AI programs such as ChatGPT are now available to the public. Here are some common questions and concerns to help you better understand it.

What is artificial intelligence?

Put simply, AI is a computer program that is preprogrammed to analyze and complete tasks typically done with human intelligence, such as recognizing a face or driving a car. That might sound right out of science fiction to some, but artificial intelligence is not limited to tech experts or people on the cutting edge of what’s cool.

Who uses it?

You might not even realize it, but some form of AI is likely already a part of your day-to-day life. If your phone auto-completes your text messages or emails, if you use a customer service chat window online or if you have a smart home assistant that recognizes your voice, you’re already using AI to make your life easier.

AI programs can also be a useful tool to help you generate ideas or start research for homework assignments, projects at work or travel itineraries. No one should claim AIgenerated content as their own, but it can save you time in the information-gathering and brainstorming phases of a project.

How worried should you be?

Like any powerful tool, AI brings risks along with rewards.

If you’re worried about it taking over the workplace or humanity, you can rest easy – AI tools don’t possess human-like smarts and generally only excel at the specific tasks they are trained to perform. There are limits to its abilities, and with a lot of AI-generated content, humans still need to review and confirm its accuracy.

For example, while an AI program may seem to interact with the information or questions that users enter, its output is still passive. It won’t push back on your assumptions and may even invent statistics to respond to the prompts provided. Anyone who uses AI will need to hone their critical thinking skills.

Instead of leading to unemployment, it appears that our skill sets will shift as AI becomes more normalized, just as 14

What are some common risks?

Researchers have shown that AI programs can show bias, as the output is only as good as the input. When AI models are trained on data that contains bias, AI will replicate and potentially increase this bias. What’s more, AI may present users with incorrect information on a particular topic simply because that detail often shows up across the corners of the internet. Bias and misinformation are risks, and people must carefully review and think critically about its output. We’ll all need to stay aware of developments in AI to avoid being duped.

Ethics is also an important part of conversations about AI – whether it’s schools creating policies and educating students about AI or companies deciding how to use it responsibly and providing employee education.

Understanding RSV: Why Older Canadians Need to Stay Informed By newsroom

mong the myriad of illnesses that can affect us, respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, may not always be top of mind. However, understanding RSV is vital, particularly for older adults, as this common yet highly contagious virus can have severe consequences.

Often perceived as an ailment primarily afflicting children in daycare or communal settings, RSV can, in fact, make anyone ill. Older adults are particularly susceptible to serious infections, with a significant portion of RSV-related deaths occurring in those aged 65 and above.

Increased Vulnerability Several factors contribute to the heightened risk older adults face from RSV. Underlying conditions commonly seen in adults, such as diabetes, heart disease, or lung ailments, can amplify the potential for severe RSV-related complications.

Even individuals without chronic health issues are more susceptible to infections and health challenges as they age.

This vulnerability stems from the natural decline in the effectiveness of the immune system, mirroring the gradual decline of vision and metabolism in aging individuals.

Typically, the immune system peaks during young adulthood and then embarks on a gradual descent, leaving older adults more prone to infections and their associated complications.

Additionally, immunity acquired from prior exposure to RSV wanes over time, increasing the risk of repeated infections.

The Search for Solutions While efforts are underway to develop preventative measures for RSV, including vaccines, there is currently no vaccine or specific treatment available for adults in Canada.

Moreover, as mentioned, immunity stemming from prior exposure to RSV is relatively short-lived, allowing reinfection.

Protecting Yourself Despite these challenges, there are steps older Canadians can take to reduce their risk of RSV. Practicing general infection control measures can make a significant difference.

These measures include frequent handwashing, avoiding touching one’s face, covering coughs and sneezes in public, regular disinfection of frequently touched surfaces, and maintaining distance from individuals who are unwell.

Vaccination is an essential element in the fight against RSV, and staying informed about developments in RSV prevention is crucial. By taking proactive measures and staying informed, older Canadians can help safeguard their health and wellbeing in the face of this often underestimated virus.

As research continues and new measures are explored, the importance of RSV awareness remains paramount. In an era of evolving healthcare challenges, staying informed is the first line of defense.

Chestermere Businesses Feeling the Pinch Residents’ Support More Critical Than Ever Amid a surge in business insolvencies, is Chestermere doing enough to back its local entrepreneurs?

anada is witnessing a surge in business insolvencies.

In the third quarter, they skyrocketed by 41.8% compared to the previous year, surpassing even prepandemic levels. Chestermere, like the rest of the nation, is not immune. But while data paints a bleak picture, a deeper question emerges for Chestermere residents: are they genuinely supporting their local businesses?

The Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy reported 1,129 businesses opted for bankruptcy or proposals in this year’s third quarter, which is an increment of 3.6% from the previous quarter. To put it in perspective, this figure stands against the 827 filings seen in the third quarter of 2019.

This uptick is attributed to the culmination of several factors, as elucidated by the Canadian Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Professionals (CAIRP). As businesses grapple with the withdrawal of COVID-19 support, they also face higher interest rates, reduced consumer spending, and growing inflation. André Bolduc, CAIRP chair, articulates the dire situation, “Many businesses that managed to navigate through the pandemic did so heavily leveraged. Now, with escalating borrowing costs, reduced access to capital, and the inflation-driven spike in operational costs, many consumer-facing sectors are facing unprecedented challenges.”

Moreover, these statistics might only be scratching the surface. Bolduc suggests many business owners, instead of treading the complex insolvency path, prefer simply shutting down operations, making the actual number of businesses facing hardships potentially much higher.

Parallelly, Canadians are grappling with a surge in personal debt, driven by the prevailing high-interest rates. Many are deferring to debt as a stop-gap measure to combat rising essential costs. However, this “temporary” solution often snowballs into unmanageable debt burdens. As per Bolduc, “The official numbers are merely the tip of the iceberg.

Many Canadians spend years in serious debt before even considering legal relief avenues.”

Despite this alarming landscape, the Bank of Canada chose to maintain its key rate at five percent, anticipating the complete impact of its tightened monetary policy to manifest across the economy.

Now, zeroing in on Chestermere: what does this all mean?

While the national scenario is daunting, each community’s response can make a difference. Chestermere residents have often vocalized their support for local businesses. But with the current economic trials, words need to transition into actions. Supporting local establishments is not just about ensuring economic prosperity within the community but also about upholding the spirit and character of Chestermere.

The present scenario offers a reflective opportunity for Chestermere residents. As businesses confront the harsh economic winds, the community’s backing is more pivotal than ever. In these trying times, the adage “actions speak louder than words” holds profound relevance. Now is the moment for Chestermere to translate its purported support into tangible patronage for its local entrepreneurs.

Older Adults Coalition of Chestermere (OACC) November 2023 ported two amazing charities in our community – the Chestermere Women’s Crisis Society and Project Rewrite.

Repeat next year? Maybe we should give the organizing committee some time to rest.

The City of Chestermere has released the City’s Social Needs Assessment report. It can be found on the Chestermere Today website at https://chestermeretoday. com/social-needs-assessment/. Click on View Results to see the full report. According to the City, the survey “played a crucial role in guiding decisions on resource allocation.”

Older Adults’ Coalition of Chestermere (OACC) A few blustery days to contend with recently along with that first snowfall drive - Yuck! But now that it’s behind us, we are all settling in for that thing we call WINTER. Many of us tend to hibernate during the cold months, and it is a great opportunity to get caught up on those things we put aside because it is just too nice out to be indoors. Clearing out closets and de-junking are some winter projects many of us tackle.

Having said that, it’s important to be social and keep engaged for our mental health. There are a lot of events and opportunities to get out into the community so be sure to check them out.

Please take a moment on November 11th to remember those who have and are actively serving our country. Many have given their lives for the freedoms we enjoy today.

Whether you attend a formal event or not, it is important that we remember!

OACC News & Community Events The Chestermere RCMP Regimental Ball was held on October 21st and was definitely an event to remember. The formal gala had everyone donning their best threads and, alongside the RCMP “reds”, everyone looked absolutely stunning. It was a wonderful celebration that also sup26

For those pool people (pool table, not swimmers), the Whitecappers have their pool table open on Friday & Saturday from 2pm – 4pm. Non-members are welcome (small fee). It will feature a roast beef dinner followed by bingo, door prizes and a 50/50 draw. As always, so many things happening at the Whitecappers. How to use a mobility scooter 3 tips for helping visually impaired seniors remain independent

Do you need a mobility scooter to help you get around?

If so, here are a few tips for using one.

• Review the functions. Learn the location of the different buttons and try them out to understand how they work.

Elderly people with a visual impairment often require help with everyday tasks. If someone you love has become visually impaired in their old age, here are a few things you can do to help them maintain their independence.

• Practise driving. In an open and uncluttered space, learn how to brake, pick up speed and steer around corners.

• Remain seated. When you drive your mobility scooter, practise remaining positioned in the middle of the seat. This will prevent you from leaning too far to one side, which could cause you to tip over.

1. OFFER YOUR ASSISTANCE A visual impairment can make it more challenging for your loved one to perform their daily activities. To help them, consider offering to complete the tasks they find most difficult.

• Engage freewheel mode. Mobility scooters usually have a freewheel mode that disengages the brakes and allows your mobility aid to be pushed. However, it’s important to remember to put the scooter back in drive mode when it’s not in use.

2. ENCOURAGE COMMUNICATION Let your loved one know you’re there for them and they can talk to you about their feelings. Listen to their needs so you can help them make any necessary changes.

• Drive in suitable areas. Only drive your scooter on sidewalks, in bike lanes and on the right side of the road. You should avoid driving on streets without a shoulder.

When purchasing a motorized mobility aid, it must have the mandatory equipment required by your region including brakes, lights, reflector strips and more. For personalized advice, talk to the sales associate at your nearest mobility aid store.

4 reasons why puzzles are great for seniors Puzzles are a popular pastime for people of all ages, but for seniors, this activity has numerous health benefits.

Here are four reasons to take up this hobby in your golden years.

3. DEXTERITY Connecting puzzle pieces requires manual dexterity.

Maintaining your fine motor skills and co-ordination as you age is important for performing a variety of daily activities that can help you remain independent.

1. MEMORY Solving puzzles requires good mapping, dexterity and observation skills. Consequently, this hobby is excellent for improving and preserving memory by stimulating the brain.

4. RELAXATION When solving a puzzle, you must focus. This allows you to escape your daily routine and can help you to relieve stress.

2. FOCUS Putting a puzzle together requires you to pay attention to the task at hand. This type of heightened concentration can improve your focus and help boost your short-term memory and other cognitive abilities.

Just like the muscles in your body, you need to exercise your brain regularly to keep it fit. To stock up on puzzles, visit the stores in your area.

3. ASSESS THEIR HOME You may want to suggest installing grab bars in your loved one’s home to prevent them from falling when getting out of the bed or shower. You should also go through their living space to ensure there aren’t pie­ ces of furniture, rugs or accessories that could be a safety hazard.

If you make changes to your loved one’s living space, make sure you discuss it with them. However, it’s best to avoid drastic changes, as people with severe visual impairments rely on their memory to find their way around.

If your loved one needs additional help, consider reaching out to a home-care provider in your area.

Chestermere Community Support Services is hosting an Outreach event at the Library on November 23 from 11am – 2pm. This is the City’s opportunity to provide information on the services offered. It includes information on referrals to resources, career and employment support and referrals, guidance on how to access some government programs as well as their subsidy for recreational services for residents.

Need something to do with the grandkids or family. That Winter Thing is taking place on December 2nd at the Rec Centre. There will be lots for you to enjoy. Entertainment, marshmallow roast, tractor rides, Christmas market, crafts, and of course, Santa. A favourite of all, the Kids’ Holiday Store will also be open for business!

News & Views on Health For those interested, the flu shots offered through Alberta Influenza Immunization Program launched last month alongside the new Covid vaccine. Call your pharmacy to arrange an appointment.

CRPCN advised that the province is experiencing some significant drug shortages – especially with Ozempic. RSV shots are now available, but the cost is close to $300. The good news is that the province is releasing $57 million to Primary Care Network for several initiatives. It includes investment in more Nurse Practitioners as well as funding to support for virtual call appointments with doctors.

Lakeside Libations A Flair For Carménère Nick Jeffrey libations@theanchor.ca

As I took down the Halloween decorations to make room to put up the Christmas decorations, I made sure to leave time for one more special event in the month of November, namely the observance of International Carménère Day. To the joy of my regular posse of tippling companions, I pulled some dusty old bottles from the cellar to appreciate this noble and classic grape on its special day.

For those not familiar with the varietal, the Carménère grape is an ancient French varietal, and one of the six permissible red grapes in Bordeaux wines.

Unfortunately, the Phylloxera blight of the 1860s that ravaged the vineyards of Europe all but destroyed the Carménère species.

The grape was thought to be entirely extinct until it was rediscovered in Chile in 1994. As it turns out, the 32

Carménère grape looks remarkably similar to Merlot, and the Carménère vines had been thoroughly mixed with the Merlot plantings in many of Chile’s vineyards.

Winemakers had long known there was something unique about Chilean Merlots, but it wasn’t until this discovery that the true reason was revealed – up to half of the Chilean Merlot production was actually Carménère!

Although the Merlot and Carménère grapes look alike, the similarities end there. Merlot grapes ripen a few weeks earlier than Carménère, so haphazardly interspersed plantings will always end up harvesting grapes that are not at the optimum ripeness.

Fortunately, the Carménère grape has thrived in the Chilean climate, and grows much better there than it ever did in France. The Chilean wine industry has since claimed Carménère as their signature grape, much like

Australia has done with Shiraz, or Argentina with Malbec.

The vineyards of Chile now produce more Carménère than all other countries combined, and it is now planted in its own right, rather than being inadvertently lumped in with the Merlot vines.

The name Carménère is taken from the French word for crimson, due to the brilliant red color of the vine leaves in the autumn. While the Carménère grape produces a rich and lush wine in a pure varietal, it is also frequently blended with Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot.

The tannins in a Carménère are softer than a Cab Sauv, with a complex herbal flavour masked by smoky blackberry undertones. Carménère tends to absorb oaking more quickly than Merlot or Cab Sauv, so it becomes eminently drinkable after only a short time in the barrel.

When bottled as a pure varietal, Carménère has a very soft and approachable mouth feel, due to the mild tannins. The wine has a deep crimson hue that betrays its namesake, and displays rich flavours of black fruit, burnt chocolate, and saddle leather.

Lacking the astringent qualities of a Cab Sauv, this does mean Carménère does not age as well as some of the bigger reds. Luckily, that’s never been a problem here at

Casa de Nick, as only the rare wines in the cellar last more than a few years before being cracked open for a soirée, although I must admit the pandemic has made my oncedebaucherous evenings an entirely solo affair.

When using Carménère as a blend in a Bordeaux or Meritage bottling, just a small amount can make a big difference to the mouth feel and flavour. Even adding 5% Carménère to a blend can take the tannic edge off a Cab Sauv, and add a rich jammy taste to a Cab Franc or Merlot. This has lead to Carménère being an unsung hero in some of the best vintages.

In the hands of a skilled winemaker, judicious blending of Carménère with other varietals will yield a wine that is greater than the sum of its parts, by complementing the best features of each grape.

We even have a half-dozen or so wineries in the Okanagan Valley of BC with small plantings of Carménère grapes, but the bottlings rarely make it to Alberta. My recommendation is to ask your friendly neighbourhood booze merchant to point you toward bottles of both the old world French style of Carménère, as well as the juicier new world style from Chile, so you can decide which you prefer.

he Siksika Nation, located about 75 kilometres east of Chestermere is breaking new ground in housing solutions, not just in Alberta, but across Canada. As they embark on a pioneering 3D printing housing initiative, one can’t help but wonder about the potential ripple effects on nearby communities like Chestermere.

Named “Kakatoosoyiists” or “Star Lodges” to reflect the guiding significance of stars in Siksika culture, the project promises 16 one-bedroom units spread over four buildings. This ambitious venture derives inspiration from Siksika’s creation stories where stars symbolize guidance, protection, and life teachings. Eldon Weasel Child, a Siksika Knowledge Keeper, hopes these values will light the way for the future residents, many of whom are at risk of homelessness or fleeing domestic violence.

The construction, a meld of ancient cultural inspiration and state-of-the-art technology, employs a four-foot tall robotic arm to 3D print concrete external walls.

Furthermore, the roof, reminiscent of teepee poles, will feature artistic elements painted by Nation members.

Mauricio Soto-Rubio, an architecture professor from the University of Calgary, points out the potential of this technology. Beyond the speed – traditional houses can take months, while a 3D printed one might only require weeks – there are significant savings in materials and labor costs.

But he also cautions, “It’s still a big experiment.”

Chestermere, like many Canadian communities, is no stranger to the challenges of housing. The labour shortage in construction, highlighted by a CIBC report noting over 50,000 vacancies, combined with environmental concerns such as high winds and mould, resonates with Ryan Hall, Siksika’s housing manager. “Imagine Canada’s national housing problem, then multiply it by 10,” Hall remarks, shedding light on the amplified issues faced by First

Nations.

3D-printed homes, with their efficiency and resilience to weather-related challenges, offer a beacon of hope.

However, it’s not all smooth sailing. The technology, still in its infancy, has faced setbacks due to malfunctions and weather-related constraints.

With a $2.6 million budget sourced entirely from Indigenous Services Canada, the Siksika Nation aims to wrap up construction by March 31, 2024.

For Chestermere residents, this initiative presents a lot to ponder. Could 3D printing be a potential solution to local housing challenges? As Chestermere watches this nearby experiment unfold, only time will reveal the wider implications of this novel approach to housing.

Chestermere residents, as well as all Canadians, await with keen interest the discussions emerging from this week’s meeting in Halifax, where Canada’s 13 premiers and territorial leaders gather to deliberate pressing national concerns. At the forefront is the domino effect of carbon pricing on the escalating cost of living, an issue that has Chestermere and communities nationwide feeling the pinch.

In the backdrop of this meeting, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently unveiled a three-year suspension on carbon pricing for home fuel oil and broadened a grant initiative to aid lower-income Canadians in offsetting the expenses of heat pump installations. However, this relief carries a catch: it’s only relevant for ten jurisdictions where federal fuel charges hold sway, excluding British Columbia, Quebec, and the Northwest Territories, given they implement their own fuel tax.

This has caused ripples of discontent, as expressed by British Columbia Premier David Eby, who voiced concerns over the skewed distribution of this relief. “The relief mechanism for Atlantic Canadians is commendable, but it’s disconcerting that there isn’t a transparent roadmap for British Columbians, who face identical challenges, to avail similar benefits,” Eby remarked in a recent press briefing.

Ontario’s Premier Doug Ford echoed this sentiment in a pre-meeting statement, critiquing the carbon tax and urging the federal administration to take bold strides. “Amidst rising living costs, it’s imperative for federal leadership to join hands with provincial counterparts in curtailing inflation. This entails equitable solutions for all Canadians, irrespective of their home heating methods. The nationwide struggle demands universal reprieve,” Ford emphasized.

As leaders converge for the Council of the Federation meetings spanning Sunday and Monday, a diverse set of issues awaits the roundtable. Beyond carbon pricing, there are expected deep dives into bail reform, health care intricacies, and Alberta’s potential exit from the Canada Pension Plan.

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston underscored health care as the central theme, pointing to the need for innovative solutions to the myriad challenges facing the sector. A pressing concern for Houston revolves around the recruitment tussle for health professionals, questioning the rationale behind provinces vying for the same talent pool. “There’s a vast global talent landscape. We’ve halted recruitment drives targeting other provinces,” Houston stated.

Eby resonated with this sentiment, emphasizing collaboration among provinces to prevent workforce cannibalization and seeking alignment in the training and recruitment of medical staff. Furthermore, British Columbia is eager to spotlight housing, which directly ties into its cost-of-living predicament. “From housing to public safety, there’s a vast spectrum where federal support can synergize with our efforts, streamlining delivery and maximizing impact,” added Eby. Premier Ford broadened the spectrum, drawing attention to prevalent labor shortages across sectors, emphasizing the necessity for immigration policies tailored to attract skilled labor. His statement also highlighted the criticality of enhancing economic infrastructure and rejuvenating the domestic supply chain, both areas where he sees room for enhanced federal partnership.
