R
ecently, Sodexo has faced petitions and reputable attacks from extreme animal rights groups such as Mercy for Animals and the Humane League, in relation New Mexico State University is also being attacked. A petition posted in January stated the organizations were shocked to discover a school with such a strong culture based around discovery could contract a company like Sodexo. Two weeks later there were nearly 500 supporters. Sodexo was accused of using inhumane practices including battery cage farms with small, cramped cages. Another accusation was the use of “filthy, liquid eggs.” On Feb. 19, Sodexo released a statement on their website, “Sodexo announces new commitment to eliminate veal crates from its supply chain and a phased-in approach to sourcing all egg products exclusively from

cage-free hens.” The company plans to eliminate all veal crates from its supply chain by 2017 as well as source cage-free hens by the end of 2020; the elimination of gestation crates from the pork supply chain by 2022 is included in the improved animal welfare plans. Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the U.S. Humane Society said 750,000 hens will be removed from extreme confinement in battery cage systems. Sodexo itself utilizes a Global Animal Welfare Policy that provides instructions and protocol that “exceed U.S. operations” according to the statement.
