local burlesque troupe is busy practicing for their next performance, Friday, March 13, 10:30 p.m. at Hurricane Alley in Las Cruces, 1490 Missouri Ave. The Strangeluvs Burlesque & Variety is a Las Cruces-based burlesque troupe established in August 2013 by New Mexico State University students Megan Thompson, a.k.a. Lucy La Bamba, and Anjelica Apodaca, a.k.a. Cinema Rouge.

“We started out just the two of us and eventually built up our troupe to six and had our first official troupe show in December of 2013,” said Thompson.

THE EDITOR AGGIES: At New Mexico State University, it's all about discovery! As students you embark on your educational journey and you are looking for a future with unlimited possibilities. Through enforcement of Title IX provisions, the federal Office for Civil Rights is assuring that you are able to complete your educational goats. There are misconceptions about Title IX. Some individuals believe that it is a new law, but it's been in place since 1972. Others have an understanding that it only deals with gender equity and funding in athletics. In reality, this federal law touches many aspects of university life, programs and activities.

Title IX states that: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." Specifically, the law prohibits sex or gender discrimination. This includes sexual misconduct such as sexual violence, stalking, gender bias, sexual harassment or retaliation. Sexual violence covers such areas as interpersonal violence, domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and rape.

You should be aware that if you are subjected to any of these behaviors, you have access to internal and external resources. The resources on campus include the Counseling Center,NMSU Police Department and its Victim Services Unit, the Sexual and Gender Diversity Resource Center and the Campus Health Center. Community resources are La Pifion, La Casa and the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) unit at Memorial Medical Center.

You are also able to report incidents and/or file complaints involving sexual misconduct/sexual violence with the Office of Institutional Equity, the Dean of Students and/or the NMSU Police Department Information and reporting options are available at:staysafe.nmsu.edu; eeo.nmsu.edu; nmsupoiice.com or deanofstudents.nmsu.edu.

NMSU is committed to provide a safe environment. If you are subjected to sexual violence in any form or you know the situation of another student, don't remain silent, speak up and report it. The NMSU Campus Health and Wellness Center’s mission is to “promote a culture of wellness of body, mind, and spirit through the promotion of healthy behaviors and lifestyle choices provided by education, outreach, programming, and comprehensive medical and wellness services”. Title IX bans discrimination on the basis of sex in any education program or activity that receives funding from the federal government. Signed into law in 1972, it is best known for its impact on intercollegiate athletics, where the regulations implementing Title IX require that university athletic programs are operated in a way that is free from discrimination based on sex. Through time, the interpretation of Title IX has broadened and in 2011 the Department of Education made it clear that because sexual harassment and sexual violence limit access to higher education, universities are responsible for effecting measures that will end sexual harassment and sexual violence on their campuses.

NMSU takes its responsibilities under Title IX very seriously and is committed to a campus environment free of sexual harassment and sexual violence.

The university has a Title IX coordinator, Gerald Nevarez, a chief of police, Stephen Lopez, and a Dean of Students, Michael Jasek, who have been proactive in bringing people together to develop policies and procedures to ensure that all NMSU community members are aware of their responsibilities under Title IX and the Violence Against Women

We Need to Wake Up: Ch allenging "R a pe Cultur e "

“Men are just naturally more aggressive; they are just born that way” “Why would she take a drink from a stranger?”

“Why would she be alone with a man on a first date?”

“If she dresses like that, she certainly deserved ...”

Inevitably, in a society where sexual assault and gender differences exist, these statements are bound to be overheard in conversations across college campuses in discussions about why something as inexplicable as sexual assault even exists. Unfortunately, these comments are common place and typify the concept of “rape culture” which includes victim blaming, trivializing, and sexual objectification. At the heart of any discussion of rape and sexual assault, statistics should help direct our conversations.

Ninety-seven percent of reported sexual assaults in college are perpetrated by men.

Eighty three percent of college victims are women. Why are vast majority of perpetrators men and the victims overwhelmingly women? This is a very complex question because there is no single cause and likewise no single solution, however, examining the role of cultural norms and gender oppression seems necessary given the enormous gender discrepancies when it comes to sexual assault.

Rape culture is a society in which movies, magazines, books, attitudes and comments such as those listed above, inundate people with images of sexual violence perpetrated by males against females. Media situate women as sexual objects through pictures and imagery, and in which men are situated to “naturally” behave in ways that normalize sexualized violence against women. When society condones, normalizes, excuses, or otherwise encourages sexualized violence through media and social expectations, a rape culture exists without people even recognizing it and thus unconsciously “buying” into destructive behaviors and attitudes.

Another strong but sometimes salient piece of rape culture is victim blaming in which the “reasons” for the sexual assault is focused on something that the victim did wrong that lead to the assault such as take a drink from a stranger or walk alone

at night. Unfortunately, early attempts at sexual assault prevention inadvertently exercised a great deal of victim blaming by focusing on a females’ behaviors rather than a males’ behaviors. Working in the field of sexual assault prevention, I think that it is important to teach students things that they can do to make it less likely that they will be sexually assaulted and completely unlikely that they will sexually assault someone.

Sexual assault can be completely prevented but only by the person who is contemplating that assault.

At WAVE we talk about risk reduction, i.e., reducing the risk that you may become

your partner to make their own decision. If your partner is unsure about whether he / she wants sex, emotional coercion or “guilttripping” is a form of sexual abuse.” Another example might be “Stay in control.

Alcohol is the most common date-rape drug.” A less victim blaming and perpetrator focused message is “Consent means having the ability to make a decision. Engaging in sexual intercourse with a person who is mentally or physically incapable of giving consent (drunk, for example) is rape.

If a woman or man has passed out, or is not in control, having sex with him/her is a crime.”

a victim of sexual assault by taking logical precautions. However this concept of risk reduction should never be confused with who is 100 percent responsible for the assault. Moving away from a Victim-Focused Risk Reduction to a Perpetrator- Focused Risk Reduction is a helping to clarify this confusion about blame and responsibility. An example of Victim Focused Risk Reduction is telling women something like: “Be clear about what’s okay for you.

Don’t expect your date to read your mind.”

Perpetrator Risk Reduction would instead promote the following message: “Allow

To drive the point a bit further in an almost exaggerated satirical fashion and taken from 9gag.com:

TEN RAPE PREVENTION TIPS FOR HIM 1. Don’t put drugs in women’s drinks.

2. When you see a woman walking by herself, leave her alone.

3. If you pull over to help a woman whose car has broken down, remember not to rape her.

4. If you are in an elevator and a woman gets in, don’t rape her.

5. When you encounter a woman who is asleep, the safest course of action is to not rape her.

6. Never creep into a woman’s home through an unlocked door or window, or spring out at her from between parked cars, or rape her.

7. Remember, people go to the laundry room to do their laundry. Do not attempt to molest someone who is alone in a laundry room.

8. Use the Buddy System! If it is inconvenient for you to stop yourself from raping women, ask a trusted friend to accompany you at all times.

9. Carry a rape whistle. If you find that you are about to rape someone, blow the whistle until someone comes to stop you.

10. Don’t forget: Honesty is the best policy. When asking a woman out on a date, don’t pretend that you are interested in her as a person; tell her straight up that you expect to be raping her later. If you don’t communicate your intentions, the woman may take it as a sign that you do not plan to rape her.

Although the above is outrageously witty and simplistic, it creatively address the need for change in terms of moving away from Victim- Focused Risk Reduction to a more Perpetrator- Focused Risk Reduction.

Another important movement in the field of violence prevention is bystander training. This training, which we plan to bring to NMSU sometime in the near future, will help students learn the skills necessary to effectively intervene should they witness a potential perpetrator-victim situation.

NMSU students are often up past two in the morning, studying of course, but on Saturday, February 28 over 260 students stayed up from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. for a different reason. Saturday was the first ever AggieTHON hosted at NMSU, a 12 hour dance marathon to raise money for the local Children's Miracle Network Hospital.

The dance marathon was preceded by a semester of other events and fundraising, and served as a celebration for those who contributed to the cause and who worked in the organization.

In the fall of 2014, AggieTHON held a color run in which over 330 students participated, making it one of the largest student organized charities runs ever to take place on the NMSU campus. Along with the color run, the organization held smaller events throughout the year as well.

Communication Disorders major and Co-founder, Elizabeth Leatherman, said “The dance marathon was a culmination of our efforts through the year, and a way for the people who worked on it to see the impact they’ve had.”

To that effect, families and individuals who have benefitted from the Children’s

Miracle Network shared their testimony at the dance marathon. “I was there for about six hours and I remember a football player from Mayfield who spoke about his story” said Fine Arts major, Diana Lawson “It was really touching to see that student able to speak to us because of fundraising like AggieTHON.” Nationwide, dance marathon organizations managed to raise over $15 million last year. Of that sum Leatherman said “LSU managed to raise $1 million of that, and the University of Iowa raised over $2 million.

And we know it will take time for NMSU to raise that much, but we saw a lot of excitement and we’re hopeful.”

Over the 12 hours, there were a few hiccups with food delivery being late and the crew having to deal with over 200 hangry students, but the dancing continued into the long hours of the night. “Each member of the AggieTHON crew was up for at least 30 hours, but the hard work was definitely worth it and we were all really happy to see that many students come out for the event” said Hannah Parker, co-founder.

In its first year, AggieTHON was able to raise exactly $15,033.31 to contribute to the local Children’s Miracle Network hospital and with excitement growing, it won’t be long before NMSU students take the lead in fundraising.

Service Introduced to Las Cruces

By Merrit Peterson Staff Writer Uber, a mobile app based driving service, was introduced to Las Cruces on Feb. 18.

People with Uber accounts will be now be able to get low priced transportation services within the city using a free application downloaded on their iPhones.

Uber is different from other driving services in that it uses iPhone GPS to detect the riders location and immediately connects him or her with the nearest available driver. Because of this unique GPS capability, people can be picked up anywhere at any time.

Once clients enter their destination and request a car, they immediately see their driver’s photograph, license plate number and type of car.

Uber clients are also given the unique opportunity to track their driver’s progress as they come to pick them up. Details of one's trip to and from a location can also be shared with those who also have the app to guarantee one's safe trip home.

Because Uber is a phone application and nationally headquartered, fare tends to be significantly cheaper than other local taxi services, but varies due to factors like traffic and weather.

According to Uber, a ride from Graham Central Station to New Mexico State University Campus is $11, a ride from Whiskey Dicks to Pan Am Center is $7, and a ride from New Mexico State University to Dona Ana Community College East Campus is $19.

MEN'S TENNIS The men's tennis team was in Corpus Christi, Texas this week for the Annual HEB Tournament of Champions. The team's ability to excel in doubles competition shined through as the pairing of Strahinja Trecakov & Paul Denele and Germain Degardin & Charles Baron both grabbed victories in day one of the tournament. Unfortunately, the team has not found their groove in singles play and that cost them against the University of Louisiana – Lafayette. Lamar University faced the Aggies later that day and walked away with a sweep of the team. On the second day of the tournament, the DePaul Blue Devils would beat the Aggies 4-3. The team can take solice in the fact they were able to claim half of the singles victories in the matchup (3-out of-6).

WOMEN'S TENNIS The women's team would play host this week to Stephen F. Austin University and Western Michigan. In the match against the Stephen F. Austin, the Aggies would ride strong doubles play on their way to a 4-3 victory. After building a strong streak of home dominance, number one player Ashvarya Shrivistava has dropped back-to-back home matches in the last couple weekends. Doubles was once again what carried the team against Western Michigan. The pairing of Susana Alcaraz and Erika Castillo Lopez outclassed the number 47th ranked pairing of Caroline Aleck and Meika Ashby by a score of 6-1.

SOFTBALL Softball has been on a winning streak the past two weekends. They are now riding a nine game winning streak after sweeping their weekend Round Robin Tournament. On Friday night they got things going by breaking out the bats in matchups against Tulsa and North Dakota. Karysta Donisthorpe also dominated the Hurricanes on her way to a complete game shutout; the final score being 8-0. The offense was able to mercy rule North Dakota later that night in a 15-5 blowout that was called in the fifth inning. Tulsa would not lay down for the Aggies in their second chance game on Saturday, as they scratched across 10 runs but they still fell 12-10 in the end. North Dakota would get two more cracks at the Aggies, later Saturday and then again on Sunday Morning, but the theme of not being able to surpress the offensive minded Aggies continued as they lost both contest 19-13 on Saturday evening and 9-4 to close out the tournament on Sunday morning.

GOLF

BASEBALL

The men's golf team were guests to the National Invitational Tournament that concluded on March 1. The team was able to walk away from that tournament with a tenth place finish out of the sixteen schools competing. Patrick Beyhan lead the team with a 4-over par for the tournament and was able to finish as they 25th ranked individual competing.

The team's season woes continued as they took a trip to Tuscon, Arizona this week to play the Arizona Wildcats. In game one of the midweek set the team fell behind early 2-0 and despite a couple of runs in a comeback effort the Aggies ultimately fell in nine innings by a score of 6-2. In their second match-up against the Wildcats, neither side of the ball held strong for the team as they were dispatch of 10-0. The team hoped to salvage the week with a three-game weekend set against Northern Kentucky here in Las Cruces but, sadly due to inclement weather in the Kentucky area, the series had to be cancelled.

Men's Basketball Ends Regular Season Strong Julian Martinez Staff Writer This week the men came into the week having wrapped up the regular season title but still looking to end their regular season on a positive note. They accomplished that in a couple matchups that offered their share of lessons as the Aggies look to take their third consecutive Western Athletic Conference Tournament title in Las Vegas, Nevada later this week.

This past Wednesday, the team would supposed to make up a game that they were supposed to play a couple days prior but was put on hold due to inclement weather that delayed their flight. The four-day stay in Texas did not slow the team down as their matchup with the Univerisity of Texas – Pan American proved to be no trouble.

At no point in the game did the Broncos grab a lead away from the Aggies.

The Aggies had three players carry them on offense with double digit scoring outputs. At the forefront of the scoring was Tshilidzi Nephawe with a team high 19 points. Nephawe also contributed in the rebound category as he was able to leave the contest with 14 boards that also led the team. This is the fourth time this season he has had a double-double.

Daniel Mullings and Ian Baker were the other two players in double digits with 12 and 13 points scored respectively. Mullings added a contribution of three steals.

The Aggies would win this one by a score of 69-48 following a 15-2 run where the Broncos failed to sink anything in the

game’s final five minutes. This would officially give the team their 20th win of the season as they headed into the final regular season game in Las Cruces.

Chicago State would prove to put up quite the fight in front of the Pan American's sellout crowd. The Aggies started off this game with some awesome sights such as huge blocks and an impressive Daniel Mullings dunk in the first five minutes of the game. By halftime they held a ten point lead over the Cougars (37-27).

During the second half, Chicago State refused to back down as they continued to chip away at what grew to a 16 point lead by the Aggies with 15 minutes to go in the game. The Aggies second half shooting numbers sat at 33.3 percent (6-for-18).

Stars from the contest were Nephawe, Remi Barry and freshman Forward Pascal Siakam. Siakam, who was able to do much for the team on offense as well as defense.

In the game he had 11 points, 10 rebounds and added five blocks.

The previously mentioned dunk by Mullings was good enough to make ESPN's Top Ten Plays of the Day as he played his last ever home game as a member of this team.

An 11-game win streak will guide the Aggies as they head into the conference tournament season looking to grab their third straight championship for the conference but also a chance to play in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.

The WAC Tournament will begin play on Thursday out of the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada where the Aggies will be the number one seed.

Aggies pick up their 20th win Efrain Hernandez Staff Writer

Shanice Davis led the offense with 16 points, three assists and three steals while Brianna Freeman finished the night with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Freeman was recently named the WAC Player of the Weeks for the secondconsecutive week after helping the Aggies secure an outright conference title. Freeman is the first Aggie to win the award in back-to-back weeks, according to nmstatesports.com.

“We are very proud of Brianna for her second player of the week honor,” Trakh said. “I believe she is a great candidate for player of the year. Brianna has worked extremely hard since last year; the scary part is she has so much more room for growth. She is also a Crimson Scholar and represents our university very well.”

Sasha Weber scored 10 points while Abby Scott finished the game with 12 points going 4-of-10 from 3-point, tying Colette Flack for eighth place all-time in 3-pointers made, according to nmstatesports.com.

This is the first time since the 2007-08 season, the Aggies have reached 20 or more wins when they finished 23-9.

After receiving a first-round bye in the WAC Tournament, the Aggies will not play until Friday, where they will take on either Utah Valley or Seattle University.

New Mexico State University women’s basketball team picked up their 20th win of the season after defeating Chicago State 62-54, at the Jones Convocation Center early Saturday afternoon.

With the victory, the Aggies finished the regular season 20-7 and 13-1 against teams from the Western Athletic Conference while going 20-2 in the teams’ last 22 games of the season.

“This could have been a very bad loss for us,” Mark Trakh, head coach, said.

“But the girls did find a way to win it as they’ve done all season. We got to play better though or our stay at the WAC Tournament will be very temporary.”

Throughout the first half of the game, the Aggies and Cougars kept it exciting as the Aggies held a 30-24 lead over the Cougars.

Leading 60-46 late in the second half, it looked like the Aggies would cruise to the finish line, but Chicago State had other things in mind, Chicago State scored eight unanswered points with 34.8 seconds remaining to bring them within striking distance but because of a couple of late free throws, the Photos by Luis Miranda, Jr. Aggies were able to put away the game.

How I learned to stop worrying and love burlesque Billy Huntsman Staff Writer

Apodaca, a graduate of NMSU’s film program, has since moved to Chicago.

Thompson is currently a junior at NMSU, studying theatre arts, specifically costume design.

“I had been dancing since I was a freshman in high school and always enjoyed participating in the arts,” Thompson said.

A native of Las Cruces, she originally attended the University of New Mexico for a semester, but moved back to Las Cruces afterward “I was really interested in finding some sort of group that was unique and would offer me an artistic outlet,” Thompson said.

Apodaca was then a member of another burlesque troupe, for which she suggested Thompson tryout.

“I was very drawn to burlesque's body positive message and the healthy stance it takes on sexuality, so I did,” Thompson said. “It was the best decision I've ever made.”

Shay Harris, a.k.a. Luna Moonshine, a member of The Strangeluvs, was also attracted to burlesque for the same reasons.

“The first show that I had seen (April 2014), there was a guest performer, Feisty Baudelaire, and she’s a plus-sized woman, and I was just really, really enthralled by her performance,” Harris said.

Luna Moonshine first performed at the Las Cruces Comic Con. “It could’ve gone better,” Harris said.

In front of perhaps 200 people, a sound malfunction rendered the song to which she was to perform—“Turn Into Earth” by The Yardbirds—“gross and muffled.” Harris said it was difficult to perform to.

“But I still did it, and I got a really great response,” Harris said.

She said she always has apprehension

before going on “Stage fright’s something that you’re never going to get used to, but generally in the theatre world you think, ‘If you’re not nervous, then why are you doing it?’” Harris said. “It’s supposed to be kind of thrilling and exciting.”

Throughout any particular performance, there is no shortage of whistling, clapping, hooting or catcalling.

“We have a really great fan base and a lot of people that are very enthusiastic about our art,” she said. “We usually have pretty good turnouts at our shows. I think Las Cruces is just such a neat artsy community.”

Harris said she would like to see the attitude of burlesque being something to be looked down upon abolished.

“There’s this assumption that if you take off your clothes for other people’s enjoyment that you don’t respect yourself, but that’s really not the case,” Harris said.

She said burlesque is the art of striptease.

“There’s a certain vulnerability that comes with it, but it’s also liberating,” Harris said. “I think nudity is a thing that should be celebrated. We are the way we are and it’s exciting. I think bodies are beautiful.”

For her parents’ part, Harris said, they were initially shocked at learning of her participation in burlesque.

“My dad said he had always seen this coming because he said that when I was a kid I used to just take off my clothes when I got home,” Harris said. “He used to tell my mom that I would be stripping one day.”

Harris said her family soon came to accept Harris’ new hobby.

“I’m sure they would like it if I had

hobbies that weren’t quite so scandalous, but they support me,” she said. “I think they’ve realized how much I like it, how much I really enjoy doing it.”

Burlesque has had significant impacts on Harris’ and Thompson’s life, they said.

“You’re celebrating yourself and bodies everywhere, body love and acceptance,” Harris said. “I think it’s empowering; it’s just such a confidence boost. I know that self-love should just come from you, but having other people celebrate your body is also just really exciting—it’s like a drug, you just can’t get over it.”

As Baudelaire did for her, Harris said she hopes to inspire people who see her perform “to accept themselves and love themselves.”

Thompson, who said she has struggled with depression, anxiety and an eating disorder for most of her life, said burlesque has been a lifesaver.

“It's shown me how to take control of my sexuality as a woman, and how to appreciate my body,” she said.

Additionally, Thompson said she feels accomplished when she thinks of having started her own business at 19.

As to their futures in burlesque, Harris and Thompson both said they would continue performing, even if they don’t make it professionally.

“I want to die onstage when I'm 90 in a shower of glitter while covered in diamonds and furs,” Thompson said. “Whether I make it big or just do it as a hobby for the rest of my life, I know burlesque will always be a beautiful part of myself.”

The March 13 show is restricted to 21-year-olds or older, and admission is $5 at the door.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are a group of conditions that occur in a person whose mother had consumed alcohol during her pregnancy.

Encroachment of Professor at NMSU Dear Editor/Roundup: I have recently become aware of some terrible inequities suffered by a NMSU Music faculty member who is leaving at the end of the semester, which strongly remind me of a grim story from Highlands University. I have a professor friend there, Dr. Djuro Zrilic, a Serbian Electronics inventor with about 10 patents in wave generation, who had been teaching for many years there in Electrical Engineering. I always thought of him as a 21st Century Tesla with NMHU students who were so lucky to have him as their Professor. He brought to Highlands huge corporate and government grants, perhaps the largest they ever had had in the Sciences, yet when former State Senate President Pro Tempore Manny Aragon was appointed by Governor Richardson as Highlands President, the atmosphere rapidly changed for wthe worse.

There was talk from Manny of turning Highlands into the "pre-eminent Hispanic-serving University" in the Nation, with links to Georgetown, Columbia, etc. A sharp increase in hostility towards non-Hispanic faculty ensued, and my friend suffered badly, being called (BY OTHER FACULTY MEMBERS, even!) a Russian spy (as if there were something going on at Highlands the Russians would be interested in?!), a cousin of Slobodan Milosovich, that Balkan Bad guy; a paranoid schizophrenic, a homosexual, so mean and oppressive to students by failing them when they showed up for class but still flunked all the exams, etc.

Dr. Zrilic finally suffered the final insult when Highlands stopped paying him. He went to Federal Court with his lawyers and finally sued Highlands, settling for an undisclosed sum. He accepted a position at the University of Texas at San Antonio, and everything is peachy for him; his professional life makes sense again after he stopped being a Professor in New Mexico!

My unnamed Music Professor friend at NMSU is going through some similar bizarre treatment in unsubstantiated accusations, perhaps not at the egregious level that Dr. Zrilic went through, but still substantial, nonetheless. There is at NMSU so far very little comprehensible support or backing from the administrators of that department, which almost tolerate this level of really absurd witch hunting with nonsen-

sical allegations of their own, and I have read them in detail. She is young, intelligent, a great musical performer, and, like Dr. Zrilic, from another nation. Her students adore her and she adds great credibility to the Music program at NMSU, but she will leave at the end of the semester, a serious loss to NMSU, one which could have been alleviated by the highest administration officers by looking into such problems, and maybe they didn't know about such fol-de-rol, but when your paper publishes this letter, they will have something to look into.

Point blank: if I were a Music student at NMSU with this person as one of my Professors, I would be outraged that NMSU was losing such an insightful and superb professor. I personally grew up in University Communities in Illinois, Iowa, and in California, and I never encountered such nonsense in any of five universities. She will land easily on her feet, a bit shaken, but looking back and down on NMSU til the end of time, much as Dr. Zrilic landed on his feet when left Highlands and that President who started such prejudiced inanity was sent off to serve a 4 year term in Federal Prison for taking bribes related to building the Courthouse in Albuquerque.

I have been in New Mexico for 46 years and can't stand with such petty idiocy occurs and drives talented people AWAY from our state.

When such levels of brilliance in faculties are forced to leave the state because stupid people are allowed to act like bigots in Dr. Zrilic's case, is it any wonder our state stays at the bottom of the Nation's statistics?

This morning I spoke at length about these matters with Dr. Dan Lopez, President of New Mexico Tech, and he said scientists and engineers generally have no time for the nonsense that plagues other academic institutions, so this isn't pandemic in New Mexico.

I hope your editorial staff can maybe look into this.

Stop Blaming Victims for Their Assault

Brynn Herndon Staff Writer One of the most common questions a woman will get after sharing a story of sexual assault is “what were you wearing?” If it’s not outright stated that a woman’s assault was her own fault, it’s implied. It’s always up to the victim to defend what they were wearing, how they carried themselves, and who they were with in order to make sure that they don’t fall under the category of “asking for it.”

Because this seems to need to be stated, here it is: the only time a woman is at fault for a sexual assault is when she is the assailant. Adding to that, the only time a man is at fault for a sexual assault is when he is the assailant.

Victim blaming keeps male and female victims of rape and assault silent. According to the Rape, Abuse, and Incest Nation Network (RAINN), 68 percent of all rapes go unreported, and 98 percent of rapists will not spend a day in jail. It is unknown why that statistic does not terrify everyone.

Much of victim blaming comes from what is called “toxic masculinity” in society, or the standards that men feel the need to hold themselves to and the way other people perceive them. According to The American Prospect, addressing toxic masculinity is about interrogating the ideals young boys are raised with.

This is not an “all men are awful” article, keep reading.

Toxic masculinity works against every gender, not just women. It’s this concept that has society believing that men are uncontrollable sexual beasts so it’s the woman’s job to dress and act demurely to keep them away.

It’s this concept that tells society that men cannot be raped by women – or that if they are, they must have enjoyed it. The latter is contributed to by the fact that a man has to be erect to penetrate a woman, but as many men will admit, guys sometimes get erections for no reason, not just arousal. The more you know.

Victim blaming silences and devalues victims and keeps criminals on the streets. It’s time to put aside prejudices and ideas about gender roles and listen to victims, both male and female. Rape is a crime and it is always a crime no matter who it happens to. People don’t deliberate how a victim of something like a shooting was asking for it. It’s unlikely a “well, they weren’t wearing a Kevlar vest, what did they expect?” will be heard any time soon. Don’t treat sex crimes any differently.

Rape and sexual assault are already crimes meant to dominate, control and humiliate the victim, they do not need that from friends and loved ones and they especially don’t need it from people who are supposed to help them.

Poems can be in English or Spanish, can be written by you or, by a feminist poet. It can be also a rant, signing, or rapping.

READ THIS, WATCH THAT: WHIPLASH

By Billy Huntsman Staff Writer I was in band in middle and high school. Thankfully, I’d repressed most of it, but watching “Whiplash” brought back all the memories.

The leaky spit valves. The way saliva would harden into crust around the reed on your mouthpiece. The incessant tuning, “Stiffen your embouchure! You’re flat!”

It all made my skin crawl.

Which is not the reason I didn’t enjoy “Whiplash.”

Nor does the fact the film wasn’t what I had expected make it a bad movie.

The premise: Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller), an aspiring jazz artist, perhaps a prodigy, enrolls at a prestigious music school and catches the attention of the school’s most selective instructor, Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons). Fletcher quickly proves to be physically and mentally abusive to all his pupils. Is he insane, or just trying to draw out the best in his students?

What I had expected: I knew the film would be about obsession, hence the reason I was so drawn to the movie.

I had thought it would follow in the spirit of “There Will Be Blood,” about two people who find each other and see something in the other from which they can benefit. Also because I had likened these two films, I had thought it inevitable that Fletcher and Neiman would wind up each other’s archenemy, and the film would culminate in bloody violence.

If not archen-

emies, then at least they would wind up like Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman in “The Master,” two people who frustrate each other no end, and who realize that, despite their efforts to exert power over the other, all of their efforts are in vain.

Neither of these scenarios is what happened in “Whiplash.”

But that doesn’t make it a bad movie, either. I had simply had these ideas about the film because it was produced by Jason Blum, among whose other producing credits include “Sinister,” “The Purge” and “Insidious.”

Had I been more attentive, I might have noticed Jason Reitman, director of “Juno” and “Young Adult,” among the producing credits. This might have tempered my expectations and prepared me for what the film actually turned out to be.

Also, I think I had expected too much out of Simmons’ performance simply because of the acclaim he’s received since the film premiered at Sundance last year. This acclaim culminated in his recent winning of the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

Did he deserve it?

I’m more inclined to say Robert Duvall in “The Judge” should have won.

Simmons is a fine actor, but

I wanted more from this role. I had expected Fletcher to be a terror.

Certainly for much of the film, he is, a true tyrant. But then near the end, he becomes humanized, sympathetic. Whereas the beginning of the film was more about the friction and violence between Fletcher and Neiman, the middle and ending are about creating music, achieving greatness.

This is fine, but for a movie about obsession and vanity, it’s a disappointment.

Obsession and vanity are not the qualities of good people, and throughout the film both Neiman and Fletcher hurt people, both mentally and physically. They should be punished for their transgressions, against each other, against others, not rewarded.

And who better to punish them than each other?

Teller is terrific. I first saw him in 2010’s “Rabbit Hole” and have seen many of his films since. He’s a good actor and I look forward to seeing more of his films in the years to come.

The role of Neiman is inherently shallow, as obsession makes

those it plagues, and Teller delves to the character’s very depths and comes up screaming and cursing, his fingers bleeding, drenched in sweat, the telltale signs of an unstable personality.

Couple this with the unbridled aggression from Fletcher, and even you may find yourself champing at the bit for the two to attack each other.

But it never really happens.

In good conscience, I can’t not recommend the film. The acting is solid, the writing is inspired, the directing is energetic and stays so throughout.

But the film left me wanting something different.

I have no doubt writer-director Damien Chazelle will make the film “Whiplash” should have been. As Roger Ebert said about Quentin Tarantino’s “Reservoir Dogs,” “…it's time for him to move on and make a better one.”

I’m sure music majors, particularly drummers and percussionists, will enjoy “Whiplash.”

For the rest of us, we must placate our hunger for carnage elsewhere.

Ensiferum Album Review – One Many Army

What do you get when you combine all of Finland, a copy of Tolkien’s Return of the King, a keg of beer, Skyrim, and six men who do not take themselves seriously?

You get Ensiferum’s latest album, One Man Army, which came out of Feb. 25. 2015.

The album has everything trademark of Ensiferum; catchy folk hooks, battle songs, the classic, “gallop” of guitars, and has that epic wall-of-sound that folk metalers everywhere have come to love.

Ensiferum introduces heavily layered choral work, along with some backup female vocals into this album and progressive style previously unheard in their albums.

Dealing with fantastical and historical themes, this album is far from being a lyrical masterpiece. Typical with folk metal, the value of the music lies not

in the lyrics, but in the musicianship.

The album begins with a soft folk track, typical of the genre, setting the serious mood for the music to come.

The heaviness of the album comes immediately with the second track, “Axe of Judgement.”

During this opening track, Ensiferum brings death metal elements into the folk metal genre which is generally known to one of the less heavy metal subgenres.

However, after the chaos of the first few tracks, the calm comes with a few mellow moments in the album. “Burden of the Fallen” is one of these moments, beginning with string instruments, followed by the acoustic guitar and fiddle. Clean vocals are introduced to the music, and the result is a slow, harrowing musical number.

The silence fades as guitar riffs pierce the silence and are joined in by the aggressive vocals and guitars in “Warrior Without a War.”

“Warrior Without a War” proves to be one strongest numbers on the album. Vocalist Petri Lindroos comes forwards with his harsh singing performance in this piece. He does more than rise over the aggressive instrumentals, but leads them with the power only a seasoned vocalist could accomplish.

The progressive nature of the album comes with progressive number, “Descendants, Defiance, Domination.” The longest song on the album, approximately 11 minutes long, should not be overlooked because of its length.

It stands as one of the most memorable songs on the album with siren-like choral harmonies, keeping you attached the entire way.

Even with an open mind and a willingness to engage in aggressive music, only a few listeners will be able to fully appreciate the album. With this album, folk metal titans Ensiferum have announced that not only are they back, but they are better than ever.

NMSU’s Vision for the Baccalaureate

Experience (BE) outlines what a Bachelor’s degree represents beyond the specific knowledge and skills students gain in their majors. The BE embodies the entire undergraduate experience, not just academic learning. For example, the BE includes work-related learning, cocurricular experiences (clubs, activities, workshops, etc.), social interactions, and many other activities that happen outside of academic courses. The Vision for the BE helps students translate how these experiences contribute to developing valuable skills. In turn, students can better communicate what they have gained from their university experience to many different audiences, including potential employers, parents and the community.

NMSU’s Quality Initiative (QI) focuses on one of the BE learning objectives – effective communication. The QI is a four-year project intended to 1) identify practices, policies, attitudes and beliefs that impact student writing, 2) evaluate the impact of those practices, policies, attitudes and beliefs on student writing, 3) identify where improvements can be made and 4) implement changes to positively impact student writing. This comprehensive project crosses all majors and considers student experiences in writing from developmental writing courses, basic skills writing courses and writing in the disciplines and majors, including final projects, papers and presentations.
