As Dean of the College of Education at New Mexico State University, and after serving twenty two years in the dean’s office, my interactions with students at NMSU and in our college give me great hope for the future. I find that education majors provide great service to our public and are especially adept at giving back to the community. Below are a few stories that describe students’ activities that are exemplary.

The college’s Service Learning Program, provide students with educational opportunities in community service through placement in nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and advocacy groups. The program began in 2007 with 19 students working with 27 teachers. To date, 1,719 students have been placed in over 30 schools and 30 non-profit agencies. In the 2014 fall semester, the students contributed 2365 hours of community service.

Our students also contribute to the international community. In the summer of 2014, Dr. Salas-Provance traveled with a group of 12 graduate students to Lima, Peru, for a clinical practicum experience where the students spent two weeks providing speech and language therapy at a medical center to patients with communication disorders. Students in Kinesiology pursue international study and service opportunities. This past year three students participated in international internships. Talia Gilmour worked at a children’s hospital in South Africa. Amelia Ball worked as an in-patient physical therapy intern in Australia. Ben Dove completed a research internship at Edge Hill University in England.

The Dance Program has numerous award winners, most recently; Dance Sport students won several national awards.

This month at National’s, Brandon Romero and Jade Augustain won First Place for the Gold Rhythm (national champions). Paco Gilpin from our dance program took 15 students to Madrid to study Flamenco with great success.

Our teacher education program is known for its ability to produce high-quality, culturally-sensitive teachers. Marisol Moreno, a 4th grade teacher and master’s student in Curriculum & Instruction recently received the first Exemplary Multicultural Educator Award from the National Association for Multicultural Education. This demonstrates how our students integrate learning into practice.

Amneh Al-Rawashdeh, a graduate student in Educational Leadership, received the Outstanding Dissertation of the Year Award for Research on Women and Education, awarded by a Special Interest Group in the American Educational Research Association. Thè Nguyen, a Communications Disorders graduate student, received the prestigious Minority Student Leadership Fellowship Award from the American Speech Language and Hearing Association.

These are but a few of the many exemplary students in the College of Education. Every day I see and talk to students whose scholarship, caring and commitment makes me optimistic for the future and confident that they will succeed in their chosen field. Our students continue to make us proud and their work exemplifies NMSU’s theme, a caring community transforming lives through discovery. It is an honor to be associated with such fantastic and dedicated students.

NMSU’s Red to Green Money Management Celebrates Financial Literacy Month

By Kelly O’Connor Staff Writer New Mexico State University Red to Green Money Management Program offers free and confidential financial coaching to NMSU students through one-on-one sessions, presentations, social media and special events.

“The program was originally headed under the financial aid office but went doormat through its time there. In the spring of 2013, the program resurfaced through the career services office on campus,” said Kaili Larson, peer financial literacy coach.

The service’s purpose is to educate students on how to make smart choices to reach their financial goals. Through Red to Green Money Management, students learn the value of money, budgeting, investments, responsible financial aid, and identity theft. Students are given information about the value of money and learn ways to allow money to work for them and not against them.

“We get financial information and financial education out in a number of different modes. The first of which is workshops. We host about 12 workshops each semester on a number of different topics. Those include budgeting, credit cards, identity theft, paying for college,” Larson said.

Class presentations give Red to Green the opportunity

to transfer financial information to the student body. Instructors or sponsor of an organization can request to have a financial literacy coach visit a class, club or organization, and present on the subject of personal finances.

“Another way we relay information is through one-onone appointments and that’s where we set up a meeting, and we’ll sit down with them and go over their specific financial situation and address what they would like covered. They can ask questions, and we will answer them the best we can. If we can’t we will refer them to somebody who can better help them,” Larson said.

For financial literacy month, the program has been putting on workshops and the program will be hosting a fair at 10 a.m.-3p.m., April 15, Corbett Center First Floor.

These workshops provide information about home buying, insurance, credit agencies and financial advisors with professional experience in the field. Information will also be provided about identity theft, credit score and reports, responsible use of credit cards, student financial aid, and investments.

Corbett Post Office Considering Closure:

What Will This Entail For Students?

By Merrit Peterson Staff Writer The United States Postal Service is currently considering closing their location in Corbett Center and relocating the post office to another location off campus.

The campus post office allows students to send and receive letters and packages with the convenience of the services being in Corbett Center. It is also a U.S. Parcel Service that provides postage and P.O. Boxes.

Currently, the campus Post Office is open Monday-Friday, 10:55 a.m.–12:55 p.m. and 2 p.m.–4 p.m.

According to Ophelia Watkins, director of mail services, the proposal was made to Las Cruces City Council on March 16, and it was open for public comment for the following 15 days. This period of comment has ended and the university and community are currently awaiting an announcement on the post office’s future.

During the period of comment, students and community members spoke out, including Jay Yasgur, a local writer and homeopathy specialist.

“It’s a shame, and it’s going to be a tremendous inconvenience for the to the NMSU community and the surrounding community. This is going to create a difficult situation for the international students on campus as well,” wrote Yasgur in a letter to the editor of The Round Up. However, New Mexico State University is anticipating the potential issue students will face without the on-campus

post office.

“Even if the post office does close incoming student mail will not be affected,” Watkins said. “If students need to send outgoing mail, there are two local post offices are on Idaho and in Mesilla Park. Both are approximately 1.6 miles away, and the university has made sure that there is transit to both locations.”

The main concerns of the closure of the campus post office are the impacts it may have on international students, outof-state students and students who have not vehicle all who may utilize the campus post office.

Currently, only 8-10 percent of the 3,000 P.O. boxes available on campus are in use.

Like other businesses, the U.S. Postal Service is trying to run their operation as efficiently as possibly with as little excess expenditure as possible.

The community is currently awaiting the announcement about the future of the campus post office.

According to the Las Cruces Sun News, NMSU is still negotiating options with the United Postal Services, and the university did not initiate the potential closure of the service. The campus post office may integrate with the post office located on Idaho St. "I know it has always been convenient for students, and students have always enjoyed having the post office on campus," said Wesley Jackson, NMSU's student body president to the Sun News.

"If there's anything that we can do to keep the Postal Service on campus, I'm all ears, and certainly willing to work on keeping them here."

Closure of Corbett Post Office to Negatively

Affect Students and Immediate Area Editor, Maybe you’ve heard: the Corbett Center post office is going to close. I was told it is scheduled to close no later than March of 2016, but it could be shuttered sooner.

I’ve taken the time to write a few letters to the editor, none of them being printed.

I suppose the reason for this is the same as what several people have offered: ‘Oh, I don’t use it.’ or ‘Oh well, what can you do -the government has to close it, blah, blah, blah’ or the classic ‘What can I do?’

It is said that one of the yardsticks of a society is how it treats its women and children. That statement could be adjusted a bit to read ‘how we treat our guests.’

NMSU has A LOT of international students, most without cars. They, as well as many others, (Ecuadoreans are here studying English year round, many regular students have no cars) will have to walk or find a ride to the new location (Missouri/ Solano), a two mile round trip. Need I mention the waste of resources and time in getting there and back? University departments, allied businesses -Sodexo, B & N, and the surrounding University Ave. businesses and community will be negatively

affected.

This will be terribly wasteful and inconvenient for this small city we call NMSU (by the way, UTEP has their own P.O., too).

Furthermore, there will soon be a thriving, bustling medical school on campus but those people won’t be impacted (!?) because they didn’t know what they lost. If I was one of the founders of this new school I’d be livid, just as I am.

Everyone reading this letter should add their voice to mine ‘cause one day you are going to have to use a post-office service and realize it’s damned inconvenient and a big drain on resources.

“Oh, it doesn’t affect me” is what you say. What I say is “It does and it will and it’ll decrease the quality of life for many people in Las Cruces.

Things can be changed and city hall can be fought but it takes will, and people prepared to exert it.

Once Again, Tuition Increases for 2015-2016

By Billy Huntsman Staff Writer Tuition at New Mexico State University for the 2015-2016 academic year will increase by 2.4 percent, after a vote by the Board of Regents on Monday, April 6.

This increase will mean an additional $72 per semester for an instate undergraduate taking 12

graduation rates.

“I think the six-year graduation rate is not the mark; it’s four years,” she said.

She cited the national average for four-year graduation rates as being around 37 percent.

“When (NMSU) can only get 15.6 percent of our students out and into the market in four years, I don’t think we’re doing a great job

credits, according to an article written by university spokesman Justin Bannister and posted on NMSU’s News Center.

This increase comes not long after NMSU President Garrey Carruthers issued a memorandum outlining a plan to reduce the NMSU’s system’s costs to meet its $690 million budget.

To meet this budget, the system has to reduce costs by $9.1 million, with $7.2 million of this figure coming from the Las Cruces campus, whose operating budget of $571.2 million was also approved at this meeting.

To this end, Carruthers instituted a hiring freeze in March “to capture immediate savings,” according to the memo.

Replacing positions left vacant either by retirements or resignations with student employees was one of the three stipulations by which Regent Kari Mitchell offered her approval of the tuition increase.

She also requested the university put an emphasis on quicker

on their behalf,” said Mitchell.

The main concern over this issue is the increased cost to students.

Angela Throneberry, senior vice president for administration and finance at NMSU, presented a PowerPoint during the regents meeting.

According to her office’s data, a student taking 12 credits per semester will pay over $78,000 to graduate with 128 credits. Conversely, a student taking 18 credits a semester will pay $57,000 to graduate with 128 credits.

This is due to tuition linearization, which was implemented last year as a means to get students graduated faster.

“We keep talking about how we have so many poverty issues in New Mexico,” Mitchell said.

“If we want to address poverty, we have to give our kids a chance to get to the (job) market sooner.”

Mitchell also requested the university’s agreement to discuss a four-year tuition guarantee.

“I would only support a (tuition increase) approval with those particular provisions in place,” Mitch-

ell said.

Carruthers said he would be “more than happy” to consider these stipulations, and the regents voted 4-1 in favor of the increase.

Board of Regents Chairman Mike Cheney cast the single dissenting vote, saying he could not vote “aye” until there was some “movement” in the numbers and figures presented in Throneberry’s PowerPoint.

The increase will give NMSU approximately $2.3 million in new operating revenue for the coming school year. This coupled with $1.1 million garnered from the legislature will give NMSU approximately $3.4 million in instruction and guidance funds.

Throneberry’s PowerPoint detailed the planned uses for this $3.4 million, notably: $2.2 million for faculty salary increases, $362,000 to hire advisers for students, $250,000 to increase marketing for the university and $300,000 to fund gaps left over by the continuing depletion of the Lottery Scholarship, among other uses.

Carruthers said he hoped these uses would help increase student enrollment at NMSU, which has long been an issue.

“The Albuquerque Journal” reported enrollment at NMSU has decreased 13 percent in the last five years, “to 13,741 students in 2014 from 15,712 students in 2010.”

In his memo Carruthers directly cited declining student enrollment as being a cause for the budget decrease.

“Last year we saw a five percent decrease in enrollment,” said Bernadette Montoya, vice president for student affairs and enrollment management at NMSU. She said there is an expected decrease in enrollment in the upcoming Fall 2015 semester.

“We anticipate it will not be more than three percent,” she said. “At best it will be flat.”

Another concern is student retention, which is currently at about 73 percent.

“Our goal is to bring that number up to 80 percent,” Montoya said.

McGee said the tuition increase is necessary to “enhance this university,” “enhance our graduation rates,” “enhance the student body that we have at this university” and “enhance the faculty and the programs that we can deliver at this university.”

Others are less sure of the need for the tuition increase.

Wesley Jackson, current president of the Associated Students of NMSU and a member of the board, said students are “sick and tired of (tuition) increases.”

“Take the students’ opinions at heart,” Jackson said to the board prior to the vote. “They are not happy with an increase. Who would be?”

Despite some dissatisfaction, a tuition increase is no new thing.

“I don’t recall a year where we have not increased (tuition) by some percentage,” Montoya said.

Bill McCamley, D-Las Cruces, is a state representative and former ASNMSU president from 20002001 who saw tuition increases in all of the five and a half years he attended NMSU. “Of course it sucks,” McCamley said, going on to add students who have scholarships, as he had, are in a better position than those who don’t.

Continued tuition increase has long created political controversy, a recent example being an article published by NewMexicoWatchdog.org.

“Tuition breaking New Mexico’s Lottery Scholarship bank” asserts the depletion of the Lottery Scholarship is due to New Mexico’s three research universities: NMSU, University of New Mexico and New Mexico Tech—“milking the scholarship fund for all it’s worth by raising tuition,” wrote author Brigette Russell, treating the fund as “a bottomless pit of money,” said Sen. Bill Sharer, RFarmington, in the article.

Montoya disagreed with this, saying she has heard this sentiment more than once.

“As budget decisions are made and as scholarship decisions are made, never once in my 23-year career have I heard, ‘Don’t worry about it, Lottery will just cover it,’ I’ve never heard that,” Montoya said.

McCamley disagreed with her, correctly noting NewMexicoWatchdog.org is not objective journalism, he said there was still “some truth” to Sharer’s comment.

“There was a point in time when tuition rates were being raised at a really high rate and the Lottery did take care of it for a lot of students that qualified for it,” McCamley said. “That’s not the case anymore.”

While the regents could have been more conservative in their tuition increases in previous years, McCamley said, a lack of sufficient funding from the state, which he is said is a direct result of decreasing oil and gas prices, has left NMSU in a difficult position this year, not only in terms of students, but also with the many communities with which the university is involved.

“Remember, NMSU isn’t just about students,” McCamley said.

“The research that is done, the facilities that are in place help out the state in a large array of services.”

The extension service, for example, has an office in every county in the state, to help the agricultural communities. These services require funding from the university, which only has a few avenues by which to accumulate these funds.

“If the revenue that NMSU receives that’s based on taxes goes down, then where do you make that up in the budget?” McCamley said. “You can go and ask a lot of people for money, which (NMSU does) and you can raise tuition.

That’s kind of it.”

Montoya additionally said the Aggie Development Center is another source of some revenue. “(The ADC helps in ensuring) that we are being wise and entrepreneurial in using the real estate that the university has possession of,” she said.

McCamley commended NMSU’s efforts to reduce costs, such as Carruthers’ hiring freeze, rather than requesting a larger tuition increase.

“From an administrative perspective, there seems to be a goodfaith effort on the part of the administration to cut costs, so that they don’t put (the makeup costs) totally on the backs of students,” McCamley said.

Aggies Softball Scores a Top-25 Victory and In-Conference Sweep

By Julian Martinez Staff Writer The New Mexico State softball team had a busy week as they took on two series this week.

Starting off the week they invited the #19 Arizona State Sun Devils into town and would end the week with a series against Western Athletic Conference rival the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

The series against Arizona State was a quick doubleheader on Monday the crowd witnessed the Aggies walk away with a split.

In game one against the Sun Devils the team was powered by the Staci Rodriguez and younger sister Rachel Rodriguez. They combined to drive in five of the teams six runs in the game.

Makayla McAdams started off the game but found herself relieved in the contest by the eventual winning pitcher Dallas McBride, who pitched three and two-thirds innings of one run ball despite being a little wild and allowing four runners to reach base by way of walk.

The Aggies would take these efforts and turn it into a 6-4 victory their second victory against a ranked opponent this season and a slight redemption for an earlier loss this season to Arizona State.

Unfortunately, game two of the doubleheader proved to be a disappointment for the team as Arizona State overpowered

them throughout the contest.

A five-run first inning by the Sun Devils got this contest started, but they didn't stop there as in the very next inning they posted an additional four runs. Only McBride proved effective in slowing down the opposing offense as she pitched a scoreless inning and a third.

The Aggies lone run in the game came off Emma Adams fifth home run of the season.

The final score for the game ended up being 12-1 in favor of the Sun Devils.

In hopes of shaking off the rough outing, the Aggies would square off with UMKC in a three game set running from Friday to Saturday evening.

During game one, the Aggies shined in as their offense gave them a strong edge over the Roo's. Home runs from S. Rodriguez, Fiana Finau and Kelsey Dodd would give the advantage. Karysta Doristhorpe, who struggled in game two against Arizona State, came into this game and gave her team an advantage as she pitched six and two-thirds of two-run ball, striking out six and dropping her season ERA to 2.98.

She and her team would finish with a 6-2 win in this one.

Game's one and two would be decided in a double-header on Saturday. The offense ran over UMKC again with an 8-3 victory to start the day. During the game, McBride had a quality start striking out seven and contributing with a home run of her own to aid her efforts. Finau added her 17th home run of the season to the scoring.

Game two would prove very challenging for the Aggies as they trailed going into the sixth inning. The Aggies had hanging on the line their perfect record within WAC play and they wouldn't lose that without a fight.

A huge four run sixth inning that saw Dodd hit a three-run homer, tying the game.

The Aggies would finish off the comeback with a couple of clutch hits in the seventh.

The final score saw them edge UMKC 10-9 to complete the sweep and move them to 9-0 in conference.

The Aggies next game will be against I-25 rival the University of New Mexico Lobos on 6 p.m., Tuesday in Las Cruces.

They will then go on the road later in the week to try and continue their conference success against Bakersfield in three games running Friday through Saturday.

Baseball Team on 11 Game Losing Streak, to Play Grand Canyon U

By Julian Martinez Staff Writer This season has been a struggle for new Head Coach Brian Green and his team.

Going into this weekend three game set against the conference leading Seattle University the team has lost eight straight contests with a run differential of -50 in those games.

The team has not played good fundamental baseball throughout the season as evident by their 281st ranking amongst all Division One baseball teams in walks allowed per nine innings that has them averaging 5.74 walks. The walks have contributed to the teams unsightly 6.78 team Earned Run Average leaving them with the 278th ranking in that category, according to NCAA.com.

In the series opener on Friday night the teams troubles went beyond the mound as defensively the teams was horrendous.

Three errors were made on the evening, two by second baseman Aaron Duran alone. Seattle came out punching from the start as they posted a five-run first inning.

They pressed New Mexico State starter Riley Barr from the start, tagging him for eight runs allowed, three of which were unearned. Barr's counterpart on the mound cruised through the Aggies lineup as he

only needed 92 pitches in eight innings to only allow one run.

The Aggies would fall by the score of 11-1 in this dismal start to a series.

Surprisingly, the team made game two of the weekend series interesting following the rough start.

The Seattle pitchers gave away runs in

the game with wild pitches that the Aggies were fortunate enough to cash in on as they chipped away. In the eighth inning the team broke out with a four run inning that actually saw them take a one run lead.

Seattle's confidence never wavered as in the bottom half of that inning they would tie up by stringing together three straight singles.

The ninth inning went scoreless and meant that this game would require extra frames in order to be decided. After the Aggies failed to score in the top of the tenth inning, the Redhawks would end the game with a walk-off long ball and make the Aggies rally for not as they lost 7-6.

In the third and final game of the series, the Aggies would just go in trying to avoid getting swept for the third consecutive weekend and extending their current losing streak. The team looked like they were about to break the slump as they led the game 7-2 going into the seventh inning; however, their pitching broke down in the late innings. Three Aggies relief pitchers combined to allow six earned runs well only retiring one batter each. A six-run eighth inning that included five walks, one intentional, was enough for the Redhawks to overtake the Aggies and come away with the come from behind 9-7 win.

The Aggies now are on an 11-game losing streak and in the bottom three of the WAC. The baseball team will play a tough Grand Canyon University squad in a threegame weekend series Friday, Saturday and Sunday as they hope to pick up a few in-conference wins prior to WAC Tournament play.

WAC Play Undefeated

The men’s tennis team take the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference Championship after defeating Seattle University and Chicago State this past weekend in Chicago finishing the regular season undefeated in the Western Athletic Conference going 5-0 and 9-13 overall.

In Friday’s matchup against Seattle U., the Aggies took care of business in both, singles and doubles’ competition. After Strahinja Trecakov was defeated in the first match of singles competition by a score of 6-2 and 6-4, the Aggies pulled off five consecutive victories. Paul Denele (6-4,

6-4), Christofer Goncalves (6-0, 6-1), Patrick Pfister (6-0, 6-1), Liam Goldberg (6-0, 6-1), and Charles Baron (6-3, 6-4), were all victorious.

Doubles’ play was no different as they took two out of the three matches played. Goncalves and Pfister picked up an 8-5 victory in the first match and in the second match, Denele and Baron were defeated 8-5. Going into the third match in a tiebreaker, Trecakov and Goldberg sealed it with a final score of 8-5.

Entering Saturday’s matchup against Chicago State, the Aggies picked up right where they left off and dominated the competition with a clean sweep in doubles’ play and capturing five victories in six of the matches played.

In four of the five victories, Trecakov (7-5, 6-2), Goncalves (6-0, retired), Pfister (6-0, 6-2) and Goldberg (6-0, 6-2), needed only two sets to defeat their opponents. In final singles matchup of the day, Baron needed three sets to pick up the victory with a final score of 7-6, 8-6, and 6-3.

In doubles’ competition, the duos of Chicago State were no matchup for the duos of NM State as they lost all three matches to Goncalves and Pfister (8-2), Denele and Baron (8-5), and Trecakov and Goldberg (8-2).

The Aggies will return to action in two weeks as they travel to Kansas City, Mo. for the WAC Championships which will be held April 24-April 26.

NMSU TENNIS Women’s Tennis Fall Short against Rival

By Efrain Hernandez Staff Writer The New Mexico State Aggies women’s tennis team dropped a close one, 4-3, to the University of Texas-El Paso this past weekend at the NM State Tennis Center finishing the regular season 11-10 and 4-1 in conference play.

Starting off senior day in style, the Aggies took two out of three matches in doubles’ play after Susana Alcarez and Erika Castillo Lopez were defeated in the first match 8-5.

Afterwards, the Aggies picked up two consecutive victories after partners Ashvarya Shrivistava and Denise Van Der Ben picked up an 8-6 victory while Rimpledeep Kaur and Marie-Pier Thiffa-

lut picked up the second victory with the final score of 8-1.

The outcome of the match was ultimately decided by singles’ play as the Aggies lost four of the six matches.

After splitting the first four matches at two a piece, the Miners were able to close it out by winning matches five and six eventually sealing the victory.

In the first singles’ competition of the day, Shrivistava was defeated by Davina Meza with a score of 6-3, in both sets played.

Alcarez picked of the first victory with a score of 6-2, in both sets, defeating Jeannez Daniel.

Van Der Ben was defeated in the third match of the day with a score of 6-1 and 6-3. In the fourth match, Lopez picked up

the team’s second victory defeating Lois Wagernvort, 6-3 and 6-2. Mia Brandt was defeated 7-6 and 6-4 by Daphne Visscher in the fifth match. In the last match of the day, Thiffalut was defeated by Matilda Trench 2-6, 6-3, and 6-1.

“We fought really hard today,” assistant coach Natalia Salum said. “The outcome

was not like I wanted but I’m very proud of being their coach and how they fought today.”

The Aggies will return to action as the No.1 seed as they will prepare for the Western Athletic Conference Championships April 24-26, Kansas City, Mo.

By Jessica Salaiz, Contributing Writer Anthony Albidrez, Managing Editor New Mexico State University will once again get a taste of Stonewall QSA’s signature drag show performance at 7 p.m.-9 p.m., April 16, Corbett Center Auditorium.

The drag show will conclude the sixth annual GLBTQ+ Awareness Week presented by the NMSU Sexual and Gender Diversity Resource Center and Stonewall QSA who have provided NMSU with events all week.

Gary Diaz is the Stonewall QSA president.

Stonewall QSA is a student organization on campus.

“I had two goals when I was planning out this year's GLBTQ Week. One was to build a sense of community within NMSU and the other was to have fun,” Diaz said. “The

GLBTQ+ community has always been a very close community on campus. It's also one of the most welcoming communities I know of.”

Zooey Sophia Pook is the SGDRC assistant coordinator and Gender Diverse Aggies president.

“GLBTQ Week is important for college campuses as it raises visibility and awareness of lgbtqi+ peoples and human rights concerns which affect all students, staff and faculty,” Pook said. “The NMSU community can expand the emerging consciousness of GLBTQ week by incorporating concern and respect for all gender and sexual identities in their own lives, the community and beyond.”

“One specific event that I'm looking forward to is the Drag Show. It's rare to see a drag show going on in Las Cruces,” Diaz said. “The fact that the drag show is our largest event is even more exciting to me because it means it's being received very well by the community.”

Drag has come a long way developing into a mass culture art form.

What exactly is drag? What’s the history, if you will? For all the newbies and interested parties the origin of the term “drag queen” is unclear, but may be traced back to the Elizabethan slang’s

term “quean” referencing strumpet, according to glbtq, an online encyclopedia of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer culture.

The individuals of drag have proven to be an unstoppable force.

The 21st century has presented a considerably bright present and future not only for drag as an art form, but the artists themselves who work on and perfect their art to entertain and inspire their loyal fans and followers.

With the rising popularity of Logo TV’s hit television show, “Ru Paul’s Drag Race,” society gets a first-hand glimpse into the hard work and talent (aka: pads, make up and duct tape) that goes into becoming a queen.

With the show gaining more and more ratings and receiving a green light for the eight season, the public is given the opportunity to see that drag has many forms from camp and comedy to pageant and fashion and my personal favorite, spook.

When it comes to finding the charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent needed to be the ultimate drag queen, there is no need to look further than our own slice of drag heaven here in the Southwest.

SGDRC and Stonewall QSA present the finest line up of comedy, glamor

and creep: El Paso’s Carnitas Wilson, Lady E, Puta Kahlo, Terror Kruger; Las Cruces’ Ivonna BumP; and members of the Stonewall QSA. Drag is more than being fabulous queens and kings. Drag represents acceptance, love and desire to be yourself, the person you were born to be.

In the words of Mama Ru, “if you can’t love yourself how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?”

“Students can expect a plethora of exciting and engaging events during GLBTQ week which place a focus on the expression and identities of all sexualities and genders,” Pook said. “Students can get involved in the future by volunteering at the SGDRC or working with Stonewall QSA and the Gender Diverse Aggies.”

“My hope is that students take everything from GLBTQ Week and see that we're all part of the same community.

It doesn't matter whether you represent the ‘G,’ the’ L,’ the ‘B,’ the ‘T,’ the ‘Q,’ or any other part of the rainbow alphabet, there's room for everyone,” Diaz said. “You could play football, do drag, be a student leader, be involved with Greek life, or be a professor and we will still all be human beings, and that's what I want students to take away from this."

Model U.N. Hits N.Y.

By Isaac Morales Staff Writer New Mexico State University Model United Nations team has participated in the National Model United Nations conference in New York City for the past 11 years, and has worked hard to develop the reputation they now have.

In the Model U.N., students simulate the United Nations by representing a country and working with students from around the world to develop resolutions which address issues like peacekeeping, development, women and children, regional growth, human rights and the environment.

Now despite what popular television shows like “Parks and Recreation” and “Community” might tell you, Model U.N. is anything but boring, nerdy and easy.

Danielle Ceballes, government and human resource management major, said, “The competitive atmosphere is unlike anything else I have experienced, but once you adjust to the pace and intensity, it is an incredibly rewarding experience, and you learn so much.”

Model U.N. provides many educational factors to students: it being an international event is the most significant aspect.

Each year, over 2,500 students and faculty come from around the world to take part in the conference, and it fosters an environment of global understanding and unity.

“Working with others who have done M.U.N for years and have been to several conferences was amazing,” Ismael Torres, economics major, said. “It brought a more real aspect to what we learned about the U.N., actually having to work with students from Germany, Italy, France and

other countries and placing ourselves in the shoes of a diplomat.”

It is this kind of method acting which has made NMSU a consistently recognized team at the conference, having received Distinguished Delegation—top 15 percent of schools attending—for the past four years running.

“It isn’t easy to train in the spirit of the U.N. and teach our members to be diplomats, rather than what we call ‘sharks,’” said Thea Trejo, government major and president of the NMSU Model U.N. team, “But in the end, we come out from the conference feeling more accomplished knowing that we worked towards the ideals of global betterment.”

Model U.N. is by no means without its difficult side often plagued by the “sharks” Trejo mentioned, imposing a physical toll over four days of constant work and negotiating over very sensitive issues, which sometimes leads to tension.

Despite those speed bumps, along with the sheer drain of a four-day-long conference, students come back year after year, and they do so for a reason.

“On the last day we were able to sit in the U.N. General Assembly Hall and that’s when you see what really matters about M.U.N.,” said Ceballes, “Seeing over two thousand students who all want to make the world a better place in that great hall gave me chills, and it also gives hope for the future knowing that we will be applying that in our professional lives, and that’s what I think Model U.N. is really about: creating hope for the future of the world, and making it better.”

By Billy Huntsman Staff Writer The following films are all available on Netflix as of April 9.

"The Apartment"

One of the truly great pleasures of having a service such as Netflix is that you are free to explore movies from all generations at your own pace. Typically my cinematic tastes lie in the ‘70s, with some scattered ‘80s gems.

But I also love old movies—“old” meaning black and white. As some people say black and white makes a film unwatchable, I say the exact opposite is true; black and white, for me, makes a film more watchable, strangely.

“The Apartment” is a charming black-

and-white 1960 film by Billy Wilder starring a young Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine. Lemmon plays the role of C.C., an insurance man living in New York City who allows several of his company’s managers to use his apartment as a safe haven to stay the night with their mistresses.

What is liable to happen, however, when his company’s personnel director asks to use the apartment to stay nights with his newest fling (MacLaine),whom C.C. had asked out and is hopelessly in love with?

The film came at a later point in Wilder’s career when he was making mostly comedies, such as “Sabrina,” “The Seven Year Itch” and “Some Like It Hot,” fine films but not up to the same caliber as his former dramatic works, namely “The Lost Weekend,” “Double Indemnity” and, glory be! “Sunset Blvd.”

“The Apartment,” with its subtle innocence, quirky black-and-white humor and nuanced writing, ranks among these earlier efforts of Wilder’s, a masterwork.

"The Odd Couple" One of my dad’s favorite things is to reminisce on the friendship between Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. Bring up “Grumpy Old Men” and you’ll see his face turn red with laughter when he recalls an occurrence in the film involving an IRS agent and a dead fish.

Lemmon and Matthau starred in eight films together, receiving scattered Oscar nominations for certain roles.

In 1968’s “The Odd Couple,” Lemmon stars as Felix, a recently separated and now sui-

cidal househusband who despondently attends a poker game one night at his friend Oscar’s house.

Oscar is a writer, a sportswriter, and so lives revoltingly. One can scarcely imagine two men less fit to inhabit a confined space together than Oscar and Felix, but surely, after Felix suffers a breakdown that night at the poker game and spills the beans of his separation to Oscar, that is what happens.

Oscar invites Felix to move in with him and

thus ensues the archetypal “straight-laced, OCD character” foiling with the “slob” plot.

Though it’s a comedy, this film really has substance and is written with care and sympathy for both its characters, rare qualities for a film that was embraced by both audiences and critics of the time.

Do yourself a favor and watch this film, foregoing the latest TV series based on it.

"The Simple Plan" I like murder. I like blood. I like snow. I like mystery. These make good stories.

These are the reasons I like the Coen Brothers’ 1996 phenomenal “Fargo. These are also the reasons why I like “A Simple Plan.”

In Minnesota resembling, more, the parts of Alaska to which Robert Hansen would transport the women he subsequently hunted and killed, Hank and Sarah (Bill Paxton and Bridget Fonda) live a simple life. They’re not rich but they’re not necessarily struggling.

Hank has a brother, Jacob (Billy Bob Thornton). What exactly is wrong with Jacob is never explicitly stated; let’s just call him slightly intellectually disabled.

None of these characters lead bad lives, maybe a little dull and cold, but not bad.

Certainly they must think they’ve pleased some higher power when they discover a crashed plane, its pilot dead, in the woods, and aboard this plane a bag with over $4 million in $100 bills.

What ought they do? There’s been nothing

on the news or in the papers or talk around town about a missing plane, pilot, money; there’s not been any hullabaloo.

So what if we just take the money? Take it and never talk about it? We can do that, right?

So that’s what Hank, Jacob and their friend, Lou, decide to do.

Oh, by the way, Hank, don’t even tell Sarah.

How quickly a simple plan can morph into a convoluted web of lies and skullduggery.

"The Big Lebowski" Probably you’ve already seen this.

Probably, if anyone actually reads these reviews, you’re a film buff. Or you could be rolling a joint on this page right now.

In any case, this movie is for you. It’s not for everyone; but it’s for you.

What is this film about? I suppose it’s about a man, or rather a dude (Jeff Bridges), who is beat up by two brawny men after he is mistaken for one Jeffrey Lebowski.

The dude proceeds to search for this Lebowski fellow, sheepishly requesting

compensation for his rug, upon which one of the thugs micturated, which is so not cool.

After all, “That rug really tied the room together, did it not?”

After visiting Lebowski, the dude is quickly shown the door without restitution for his soiled rug. On his way out, the dude comes across Lebowski’s trophy wife.

Days later Lebowski contacts the dude, requesting he meet and deliver a ransom to the kidnappers of this trophy wife.

The film gets strange thereafter, but not so strange as to alienate all audiences. Those who can appreciate gallows humor will like, may even love, this film.

The big draw is the character of Walter (John Goodman), a Judeo-obsessed Vietnam veteran who, apparently is “the only one who gives a shit about the rules!”

When your foot goes over the line, you mark it zero; when you need a good funny movie to watch, and later quote endlessly, with your friends, you watch “Lebowski.”

Opinion: Down with Hypersexual Culture

By Billy Huntsman Staff Writer I saw “Fifty Shades of Grey” the other day (don’t worry about it).

Afterward, I mentioned to my companion how strange I thought it was for such a sexual movie to cast two, what I consider to be, plain-looking actors in its primary roles.

While confirming my comment in regards to Dakota Johnson, my companion contradicted me regarding Jamie Dornan, saying he is indeed very attractive.

I suppose, physically at least, Dornan is the prototypical matinee idol, akin to Tyrone Powers in the 1940s or 1980s Nick Nolte. I haven’t seen Dornan in other films, but in “Fifty Shades” his acting, as everyone else’s, is not good.

The characters have no depth and so inspire no sympathy from the audience. In fact, the movie and characters are so shallow it rendered me in a foul mood after seeing it, a mood which my companion quickly picked up on.

After some introspection, I decided the movie’s obsession with sex depressed me because its success is representative of modern culture’s obsession with sex and at-

tractiveness.

In fact, I would say our modern culture is hypersexual, driven by an obsession with the beautiful, and it’s only worsening exponentially with each passing day.

I suppose this depresses me because few people seem to consciously acknowledge how fleeting current society’s model of beauty is.

I very occasionally go to the gym. I do the stationary bike, the elliptical and various weight machines for my arms (I don’t do legs; I have chicken legs and I’m happy with them). At the maximum and depending on the machine, I can maybe do 90 pounds.

There are obviously other people, male and female, who can do more and look, and are, much more muscular than I am.

They have different goals than I have: whereas they are probably at the gym to increase their physical stature in order to be more attractive to the gender of their preference, I go to the gym, in the words of comedian Kathleen Madigan, “to delay the date and severity of my impending stroke.”

I have no interest in “getting stacked.” I have no need for a six-pack, anatomical or alcoholic (I prefer wine), and I find bulging veins in people’s arms to be sickening.

But many people at the gym don’t feel the same. They want everything I just described, and more, and I understand; muscularity and firmness are highly valued, always have been.

But I find the hours spent in the gym for the sake of building muscle to appeal to one’s own and other people’s hypersexual values to be wasted.

Why? Because it doesn’t last.

Elvis Presley, Marlon Brando, Warren Beatty, Robert Redford, Mick Jagger, Katharine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Jessica Lange, Sissy Spacek, Anne Bancroft, all of these individuals were gorgeous in

their heydays, and who’s to say they are not still attractive to certain people?

But by today’s standards, which revere Adam Levine, Justin Bieber and Jennifer Lawrence as gods and goddesses; these former individuals are arguably not attractive.

So what happened to, say, Robert De Niro or John Travolta, the cherub-faced and the sexy of yesterday? The same that is bound to happen to the likes of Liam and Chris Hemsworth, Miley Cyrus, Robert Pattinson, Shailene Woodley: life.

This is the natural progression of things: the firm becomes limp, the taut becomes soft, the tan becomes wrinkled, that which is colored loses its luster, the soft becomes brittle, a well-coiffed mane recedes, the skinny become fat and distended; the babyfaced and clean-shaven sprout unshaveable, unwaxable, unsightly hair, the beautiful and sexy become average, perhaps even ugly.

This is no shameful thing; it’s only life.

Bearing in mind nothing is permanent, least of all physical beauty, ask yourself this: If attractiveness is so ephemeral, is it really worth worshipping and chasing to the ends of the earth?

I think not. So get out of the gym and enjoy life while you’re still young!

Desk has 3 large shelves providing plenty of space for a printer, desktop processor, printer paper, and files. Desk measures: 33.5" W x 33.5" D x 28.5" H and it measures 47" across (corner to corner). Desk is in like new condition with no nicks or wear.
