By Merrit Peterson Staff Writer For most of last week, religious radicals took to preaching outside Corbett Student Union.

Crowds of students gathered around the minister and his wife, Jed and Cindy Smock, to interact with them over their offensive radical statements about immodesty, women’s inferiority to man, homosexuality, premarital sex and student’s “party animal lifestyles.”

They held signs reading, “fear God,” and “you’re all going to hell,” to draw students to the scene.

The Smocks are currently on a four month mission visiting college campuses. They identify as Christian-Protestant-Pentecostal.

Agriculture business student Breanna Chavez, 18, sat crossed legged on the scene of the crowd holding a sign stating, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged!” She said she was walking by and the speakers “called me a whore earlier. It got really personal.”

LETTER FROM THE EDITORS Fellow NMSU Students,

The Honors College at NMSU Our campus has a few gems that not many students know about, and one of those gems is the William Conroy Honors College. The College is named for a former Provost and NMSU President who saw the importance of offering world-class educational opportunities to students attending this Land-grant university.

The best and brightest students at NMSU have homes in two colleges – they pursue an academic degree in their chosen discipline, but they also participate in the NMSU Honors College. Our Honors College is the oldest in New Mexico, and is a nurturing liberal arts college embedded within the bigger university. Our Honors College students receive the same type of quality education that a student might at an elite college like Oberlin, Swarthmore, or Dartmouth – without the $60,000+ annual price tag that accompanies attending these colleges.

All students who have a 3.5 GPA are eligible to take classes in the Honors College. Honors students fulfill some of their required General Education courses by taking classes in the Honors College – courses taught by master teachers that emphasize interactive learning, challenging readings, enhanced analytical abilities, and superior communication abilities. Many enjoy the fact that instead of 100 students in a Gen Ed lecture, they sit in seminar-style classes of 15-20 students and satisfy both the Gen Ed and Honors credits. When they complete their general education requirements they continue on to take honors designated courses in their academic majors, and complete their degrees with a Senior Capstone Project. Students who graduate with 18 or more Honors credits and a 3.5 GPA or higher graduate with special distinctions, but even more importantly they graduate with additional skills, knowledge, and abilities that will make them competitive in the global work force.

They are supported and encouraged to set ambitious goals for themselves, such as Danielle Miyagashima who is interviewing at a dozen elite institutions for pursuing graduate studies (MD + PhD) in neurobiology, or Arthur Tillbrook who spent a year doing a study abroad in Korea, or Damaris Lewis who is a finalist for a Fulbright award to teach English in west Africa, or Cindy Yeh who is applying for a Goldwater grant to support her research in biology, or Owen Cortner whose interests in plant sciences led him to a career in international agricultural research to improve the global food supply. These are the students who come through our Honors College, and graduate as students who will make a difference in the world.

First thing’s first, we do not believe any of you are going to hell. We do believe you are entitled to your beliefs and love that students all around campus exercised their voices pertaining to our recent visitors to campus: Brady Cone, the screaming preachers, etc.

Free speech is key to a Democratic institution and voicing your opinions and ideas is an exercise of your civil rights. There is always a time and place to speak whether it be in the quietest classroom or at a loud demonstration. Exercise that voice through any medium you can. As always, The Round Up is your medium for sharing your ideas. You are always welcome to submit letters to the editor or op-ed articles to be published in your student newspaper.

Here are some future projects The Round Up will be working on that encourage student thought.

We are in collaboration with the Office of Intuitional Equity to raise awareness of Title IX. Students need to be aware of Title IX and the relevancy of it on campus.

Title IX states “no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.”

Currently, we are in conversation with Gerard Nevarez, who is the executive director of the Office of Institutional Equity, and we plan on reaching out to various New Mexico State University personnel across the spectrum in order to raise awareness of Title IX by dedicating an entire edition of The Round Up to Title IX: issues, information, resources and different perspectives.

We welcome students to participate in this conversation.

Bike Thefts on the Rise, Keep Your Wheels Safe

By Jesse Moya Staff Writer During the past month, several bicycles have been stolen from the metal hoops outside the buildings on campus.

The bikes stolen had been locked with either a chord lock or a chain lock at various times of the day. This type of lock allows someone to quickly and quietly cut the lock and walk away with the bike, often unnoticed.

Police are often helpful in returning the bike or finding the person responsible; however, they unfortunately cannot help in every single case, and many times a bicycle theft will go unanswered.

According to New Mexico State University Police Crime Statistics, there were 113 bicycle thefts at NMSU in 2014.

Avid bike rider Nathan DeGenevieve, kinesiology student, had his bike stolen from his apartment.

He said bike thievery is a despicable crime.

The issue at hand is most of

these thefts can be prevented with several easy steps and by taking small precautions with a bike.

According to New Mexico State University Police, a majority of these thefts had unsecured locks, cable locks or were fastened incorrectly. This is a major reason people steal the bike in the first place, they are easy to grab and can be hauled away.

If you own a bike, there are precautions bike owners can do to ensure that your bike remains safe when you park it in the bike lock space.

For one, buying the correct lock is important. Cable or wire locks are cheap, easy to find, but also easy to cut. These are the most common types of locks, cut with ease using wire cutters or bolt cutters.

Chains with pad locks or combination locks are beneficial because they are flexible and lock securely, however they can weigh more than some people are willing to carry.

The best type of lock for a bike is called the U-lock,

“The most important thing to do to stop a theft is lock your bike, obviously. Any lock can make a huge difference, but two piece U-locks offer the most security,” DeGenevieve said. “For maximum security the lock should be positioned around the frame, through the front tire and around a sturdy and secure pole or rack.”

Most U-locks come with attachments to the bike frame, making them easy to carry with convenience on your bike.

“Avoid positioning the lock only around the front or back tire; crafty thieves will remove the affixed wheel and take the rest,” DeGenevieve said. “Try to park your bike in a cluster of other bikes if possible or in a moderate to high traffic area. There is safety in numbers!”

In addition to having a good lock, making sure that it is properly locked is the most important part.

If you plan to be somewhere when the sun sets, try to lock your bike in well-lit places.

“Be weary of removable components on your bike, such as handle bars, saddle, tires, headlights,” DeGenevieve said. “They are easy targets. If you have very nice equipment consider taking some of the components with you to your destination or securing them further.”

Locks as well as other parts for bicycles can be purchased at Outdoor Adventures in Solano Square. They offer a 10 percent discount for all NMSU students.

“It's always good to possess a picture or paperwork that can tie you to your specific bike,” DeGenevieve said. “If it is stolen, your ability to recover it is greatest if you can somehow prove that it is yours.”

Why NMSU is a likely choice

By Billy Huntsman Staff Writer The deadline for applications for one of the largest federal undergraduate study abroad scholarships is March 3, and Pell Grant recipients at New Mexico State University have a better chance of receiving funding.

On Feb. 18 and 19, NMSU’s Office of Education Abroad offered workshops detailing the application process for the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, with awards ranging from $1,500 to $5,000, and in some cases as much as $8,000. The March 3 deadline applies to students who receive Pell Grants and who are planning to study abroad either in summer or fall 2015.

“The odds are in (NMSU students’) favor to get (Gilman) awards,” said Kristian Chervenock, director of the OEA. Applicants do not need to work with the OEA in order to receive a Gilman award, but Clint Hourigan, an advisor in the OEA, encourages all applicants to utilize the services the study abroad office offers, which consist primarily of providing feedback on the essay that all applicants must submit to the Gilman Program by March 3.

This Statement of Purpose Essay, which has a maximum of 7,000 characters, should tell the Gilman application reviewers why studying abroad would be a “transformative experience for (applicants’) academic, career and personal goals.”

All essays given to the OEA will be commented upon and returned by Thursday, Feb. 26, so that applicants can revise and submit their applications, including official transcripts, on the Gilman Scholarship website before 10:59 p.m.

Mountain time on Tuesday, March 3.

In recent years, NMSU has seen its Gilman awards increase from two or three a semester to eight or nine. Chervenock credits this increase to Hourigan, whom he called “passionate” about studying abroad.

“Part of the reason I do this is because, whenever a student does get the Gilman, seeing their face is really, really nice,” Hourigan said.

Chervenock said the application reviewers are looking for students from universities such as NMSU. “Which is an Hispanic-serving institution, a minority-serving institution, a land-grant university (in the) southern part of the state of New Mexico, which is usually second-to-poorest in the country,” Chervenock said.

Because, the Gilman Program website says, the scholarship is for “undergraduates who might not otherwise participate (in study abroad) due to financial constraints,” Chervenock said, “New Mexico really has the advantage.”

Hourigan said, throughout the nation, 60 to 70 percent of students who study abroad are white.

“And that’s not very reflective of the U.S.,” he said.

The Pell Grant Program acts as “a diversity qualifier.”

The New Mexico Higher Education Department’s most recent—2013—report says, in Fall 2012 in New Mexico, there were more than

150,000 college/university students, 72 percent of whom were Pell Grant-receiving Hispanics.

The Gilman Scholarship website says Hispanic participants in the program are more than twice the national study abroad population.

“We (NMSU) have a tribal college on campus, we have a community college, we’re one of the largest land-grant institutions in the country,” said Hourigan.

These facts increase the likelihood of NMSU Pell Grant recipients receiving Gilman awards, Hourigan said.

“Don’t for a second think that you can’t get the Gilman,” he said. “It is a national scholarship, and sometimes that’s a deterrent in itself.

Students think, ‘I’m competing against the Ivy Leagues.’ And you are, plain and simply, but that’s not what they (the Gilman Program) are looking for. The whole idea is to diversify the study abroad base.”

Ivy League schools, such as Harvard, Brown or Yale, Hourigan said, “study abroad naturally,” whereas at NMSU, “we’re just getting our legs.”

Recipients of the scholarship must be enrolled in credit-bearing programs overseas, which the OEA can help identify. These programs must also be at least a month long, defined as 28 days, with lengthier programs, such as a year, given preference, said Hourigan.

Applicants in the areas of science, technology, engineering, math and health are also given preference, Hourigan said, as are applicants who are interested in going to countries with “critical need languages.” The Gilman Scholarship website provides examples of these, such as Arabic (all dialects), Chinese (all dialects), Russian and Korean.

Natalie Casaus, who graduated from NMSU last semester with a degree in anthropology, received a $2,500 Gilman award in Fall 2014 to go to South Korea. “(Receiving the Gilman) was kind of like an accomplishment in itself,” she said. “First it was, I was accepted to go abroad, and then other people believe in me to go abroad. In a way, it validated what I want to do with my future, which is a lot about bridging cultural gaps and bringing, more specifically Asian culture history, to the Southwest.”

Casaus is currently working to teach English overseas. She said she eventually wants to wind up working for an Asian art museum in San Diego.

Another of Fall 2014’s Gilman recipients, current NMSU senior Mary Silva, also received an award of $2,500, to go to the University of Kent in England.

“It was the best thing that could’ve happened,” she said.

With interests in English, film and psychology, Silva is currently editing a film documenting her experiences while abroad, from elation at learning she received the award, to apprehensiveness at the idea of going overseas and finally to “okay, this is amazing” when she got there, she said.

Her future plans might entail returning to Kent for graduate school, or going to Ireland, or teaching English in Spain.

Anyone interested in applying for the scholarship is encouraged to contact the OEA, located in Garcia Annex Room 238, as soon as possible.

Changes in commute for

Las Cruces residents on I-25

By Kelly O’Connor Staff Writer While taking the route on I-25 to get to New Mexico State University, you may have noticed it took a little longer than usual. This is due to construction underway on the I-25/ Missouri bridge overpass. This reconstructing is expected to last 64 weeks and will involve some detouring for drivers.

According to the New Mexico Department of Transportation, construction has been broken into two phases. Phase one will still allow two lanes of access for southbound traffic. Northbound traffic will be dealing with one lane access. This detour is expected to affect traffic accessing I-25 towards University. New Mexico State University’s chief of police has sent out an email informing students of this construction and also offers some alternate routes to take.

“Anyone who uses I-25 to get to campus will be impacted at some point during the project. As the project progresses, the impact will increase. Alternate routes include

using Interstate 10, getting off on Lohman Avenue and using frontage roads like Triviz Drive and Don Roser, and using streets completely outside the construction area like El Paseo on the West and Sonoma Ranch Blvd on the East,” Stephen Lopez, Chief of Police, said.

Phase two of construction will result in the reduction of one lane for southbound traffic just before the I-25/Lohman overpass.

Northbound traffic will remain with only one lane of traffic open. During this, the I-25 southbound is expected to have complete removal and will result in a full closure of Missouri Avenue. This phase is expected to start towards the end of March and will take about four months.

This construction will be a major undertaking and motorists are told to expect delays. According to Steve Ramirez of Las Cruces Sun-News, bicyclists who use Triviz Multipurpose Trail should also be aware of construction crews and heavy equipment crowding the area. Students, faculty and staff should take note of the new commute time and route.

“If people use I-25 or try to come down University Avenue across the I-25 Bridge, they should expect delays. Not only will congestion lead to some delays, but any traffic crashes that might occur will add that much more time. Unfortunately, we can't really say how much more time to allow compared to normal, because we can't ac-

count for things like traffic crashes. This is why we are encouraging people to consider alternate routes,” Lopez said.

At the end of the construction, the I-25 north and southbound bridges crossing over Missouri Avenue will be replaced. The southbound lanes on I-25 between Lohman Avenue and University Avenue will be widened. Missouri Avenue, Triviz Drive and Don Roser Drive will experience some changes as well, though minor modifications.

For updates on the construction New Mexico Depart of Transportation and FNF Construction will be conducting monthly meetings. These meetings will be held on the last Wednesday of every month. Currently the next meeting will be held Feb. 25 at NMDOT’s District One Complex, 750 N. Solano Drive.

MEN's team clinches onto wac

By Efrain Hernandez Staff Writer With a 72-55 victory over Grand Canyon University Saturday night, the men’s basketball team were able to clinch the Western Athletic Conference regular season title while on the road at the GCU Arena.

The Aggies (19-10, 11-1 WAC) improved their winning streak to nine games and clinched their second WAC regular season title under Head Coach Marvin Menzies. This is their first regular season title since the 07-08 season, Menzies first year at NMSU. Starting off their three game road trip without Menzies who had become ill, the team traveled to Utah Valley (916, 3-7 WAC) Thursday night defeating the Wolverines 51-38 clinching the first seed in the WAC Tournament.

“We knew this would be a grind out game,” said Paul Weir, NMSU associate head coach. “Offensively we just had to grind it out and that we did. Defensively we needed to get stops and we did that as well.”

Thanks to a stingy defense, Utah Valley struggled all night to get a rhythm flowing as the team shot 28 percent (14-of-49) from the floor and only 6 percent (1-of-16) from beyond the arc.

“New Mexico State was too long, too tall, too strong and too lateral,” said Dick Hunsaker, Utah Valley head coach. “We just couldn’t sustain our inspired effort. I thought the guys worked hard and executed our game plan. New Mexico State played like the conference leader tonight.”

Pascal Siakam recorded his fifth double-double after scoring 14 points while collecting 10 rebounds. He was followed by Daniel Mullings who finished the night with 11 points while Remi Barry scored points and recording 11 rebounds.

“Pascal and Daniel provided a spark for us tonight offensively,” said Weir. “We needed to get it going and they helped the whole team get involved.”

With the return of Menzies, the team turned the table with a 24-4 run after trailing GCU 16-6 forcing the GCU offense to change their game plan but were never able to

recover. The offense was held to 40 percent (19-of-47) shooting from the floor and 31 percent (4-of-13) from outside the arc.

Barry and Mullings led the offense as Barry scored 18 points and seven rebounds while Mullings scored 16 points and dishing out five assists.

“This is good for the program, especially for us seniors,” said Mulling. “We got to take it game by game.”

Tshilidzi Nephawe finished with nine points becoming the 32nd player in NMSU history to score 1,000 points or more.

“I am so proud of this team,” said Menzies. “They came to play and overcame a tough home court environment to get it done.”

The WAC Tournament Championship will be held in March in Las Vegas, Nevada where the Aggies have won the tournament four out of the last five.

With two games remaining, the Aggies will play their final road game of the season Saturday against TexasPan American and return home March 7 to face Chicago State where they will honor their seniors.

Women’s Basketball Inch Closer to Outright Conference Championship

By Julian Martinez Staff Writer The women's basketball team has had quite the regular season. Prior to an upset loss in Bakersfield the previous week, the Aggies were able to rattle off a stretch of 12-consecutive wins. That winning streak allowed them to go undefeated in January and climb to the top of the Western Athletic Conference.

The interesting thing was to see how this team would respond coming off of a loss considering it has been so long without one. That question would be answered when the team would invite Utah Valley into the Pan American Center.

The Wolverines despite their struggles on the year managed to play the Aggies tough. They lead the contest the majority of the time, with 26 minutes of the game seeing them out front as opposed to the Aggies who only lead the contest for a little more than eight minutes.

Brianna Freeman would be the catalyst on offense the team needed leading all players in the game with

a score of 21 total points and falling just short of grabbing a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds. Just behind her in scoring was teammate Shanice Davis who had a contribution of 20 points and shot an impressive 44 percent (4-for-9) from three point range.

Junior guard Sasha Weber came through with a milestone three point shot to end the first half and tie the score at 36. This three-pointer was the 172nd of Weber's career and was able to place her in a tie with Cecilia Russell-Nava for fourth on the school's All-Time three point shooters list.

The team would take all these individual efforts and combine it with a late 11-2 run in the game’s final minutes in order to win the contest 67-62.

Going into the game on Saturday the team would have an opportunity to do something that has eluded the team in recent years. In the last 20 years, no women's team from New Mexico State University has ended the year with at least a share of their regular season conference championship, but that's exactly what this year’s team had a chance to do with Grand Canyon in town.

This game was far from an easy way for the Aggies to accomplish their goal. It took some clutch baskets and

some real heart from the team to battle from behind late. Going into the final three minutes of the game the team was down seven.

The run that secured their victory was a 12-4 run headed by key moments like Weber coming through with one of her signature threes and Freeman hitting some important free throws.

The player that gave the team the last points they would need was sophomore guard Tamera Williams who made a shot with 2.9 seconds left and put the team up by what would be the final score, 61-60.

Now the Aggies sit firmly in the driver’s seat as they are largely in control of their own destiny for the season's final two games. A win or a loss from Bakersfield would give the women’s basketball team the outright conference championship and the obviously coveted number one seed in the conference tournament.

Those final two games involve Texas-Pan American coming into town on Saturday at 7 p.m. for what will be the Aggies last home contest. Their final game will be a road game against Chicago State on Saturday, Mar. 7 at 1 p.m.

HONORING LAS CRUCES LEGEND

By Julian Martinez Staff Writer Honoring a Las Cruces Legend Julian Martinez It's always a great story to hear when a former Aggie alumnus does something notable, and that is exactly what happened for Aggie basketball great Lou Henson. Henson was tabbed recently to be part of the 2015 Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame Class.

“I am deeply humbled to be included in this 2015 Hall of Fame Class by the National Association of Basketball Coaches,” Henson said. “When I began throwing a ball of rags through that handmade hoop on the side of our barn, I never could have imagined that the game of

basketball would bring me to this point in my life. I have been truly blessed in many ways.”

Henson's coaching background and history in Las Cruces goes back a long way. For starters Henson is a former graduate of New Mexico State University being part of the 1955 graduating class.

He would then go onto get his first taste of coaching experience at Las Cruces High School where he won three consecutive state championships from the years 19591961.

Following his first stint as a collegiate basketball coach at Harden-Simmons University, his alma mater NMSU decided to give him a shot. Henson didn't disappoint, as to this day, his 1970 Final Four team is the only time in program history that the Aggies have advanced that far. Even more impressive in his nine year

stint was that the team was able to advance to a total of six NCAA Tournaments.

Henson would leave the program in the 1975 season to pursue a new endeavor in becoming the coach of the University of Illinois Fighting Illini. His success there was magnificent as he was able to compile 423 wins and also lead that team to a Final Four appearance in 1989. He was also named Big 10 coach of the year in 1993.

After a lengthy 21 years in Illinois, Henson would return home to Las Cruces and have his final run as head coach.

He added another 135 wins to his total career tally in that time and also take the team back to the NCAA Tournament in the 1998-1995 season but see the team get bounced quickly in the first round.

Henson had to unfortunately end his career not on his own terms as he battled through a bout of non-Hodgkins lympho-

ma that made him resign his post during the 2004-2005 season.

His final career record was an impressive 779-422 (.648 winning percentage).

Henson still can be seen frequently attending Aggie games and rallying the team. The court even is named after the legendary coach.

“He's always a positive inspirational voice whenever we talk,” said current NMSU Head Coach Marvin Menzies.

“His words are almost like a road map to success.”

The class will be officially inducted into the Hall of Fame in November. Henson will be inducted with two other coaches, Dayton coach Don Donoher and Langston coach C. Felton “Zip” Gayles. The others in this class are Ed Ratleff, Rolando Blackman, Charlie Scott, Quinn Buckner and John Havlicek.

ing to crack the top 10 behind winner no. 9 ranked South Carolina 850 (290, 275, 285), no. 8 ranked Baylor 860 (297, 285, 278) finishing third, no. 38 ranked Arkansas 861 (288, 288, 285) finishing fourth, and no. 30 ranked Houston 868 (293, 291, 284) finishing fifth.

Partaking in the tournament were Travis Benson who tied for 23rd with a score of 218 (72, 74, 72), Pat Beyhan finished tied for 29th with a score of 219 (74, 73, 72), Brett Walker finished tied for 47th with a score of 223

(76, 75, 72), Luis Medina finished tied for 55 with a score of 224 (76, 73, 75), and Kenneth Fadke finished 82nd with a score of 234 (79, 73, 82).

This is the second consecutive tournament the Aggies have finished in 11th place after posting a team score of 875 (293, 293, 289) at the Arizona Intercollegiate which was held by Arizona University at the Sewailo Gold Club. In the tournament, Beyhan finished once again tied for 23rd posting a score of 217 (73, 73, 71).

The winner of the tournament was Zach Cabra of Sam Houston State with a score of 208 (72, 71, 65), followed by a three-way tie for second place as Kyle Jones of Baylor (73, 69, 69), Kolton Crawford of Arkansas (71, 68, 72), and Raoul Menard of Charlotte (71, 69, 71), all finished with a final scorecard of 211.

The men’s golf team will return to action when they partake in The NIT which will be held in Tucson from Saturday, February 28 through Sunday, March 1.

Anthropology major Erin Castleberry, 20, argued with the Smocks and thought the entire situation was entertaining.

“I respect they are exercising their free speech,” Castleberry said. “It gets the student body to start thinking about free speech.”

Many people dismissed their theatrical antics as senseless hate speech typical of the mentally disturbed, but their background says otherwise.

The man known as Brother Jed Smock, a graduate of Indiana State University and an icon in the radical right religious community has spent the last 43 years practicing freelance campus ministry at major university campuses across the United States.

Every week he visits a different college campus with his wife Sister Cindy Smock, managing to draw the attention of thousands of college students and staff members away from their daily lives and to his controversial message for hours at a time.

He didn’t hesitate to call people out on their wrongdoings and sins: “Take your yoga pants and go to hell,” and “Homosexuals, leave your selfishness and find healing in Christ,” are just a few of his catchphrases.

Sister Cindy, commonly referred to as ‘the tampon lady,’ is known by students for insisting sin is a “candy covered bloody tampon” while waving around sanitary items covered in fake blood. She also theatrically tells the story of a college girl meeting Satan through alcohol, wearing tight shorts and cheating on tests.

Sister Cindy said her husband has been going to campuses and preaching for four decades, and she 37 years.

“Jesus said go in all the world,” she said. “And we’re here to speak the gospel. We’re calling the students to repent of their sins, their party animal lifestyles.”

Naturally, students disagreed and made fun of these controversial statements. Jed constantly received profanity, threats, insults, harassment and

ridicule. It was not uncommon for female students to strip down to their bras and shorts when arguing with him to offend him.

However, unknown to students, this is exactly what Brother Jed hoped would happen.

According to the information on his ministry website, he purposely offends students on the things they care most about in aggressive mob-like environments to bring out the worst in them. From this, he hopes they will think about what they said and did later on in private, and feel shame at their actions.

“We’re planting seeds today just like a farmer doesn’t get to harvest his fruit the same day he plants a seed, we won’t get to harvest our fruit today,” said Jed. “I’ve had students track me down, write to me twenty years after hearing me preach, saying I was a deciding factor in them giving their life to Christ. My approach doesn’t reach everyone, but it reaches some.”

Brother Jed said any emotional response from students on campuses, including anger, is better than none.

“We know we look crazy, but it’s worth it. For many of them, this is the first time they have actively thought about God and being saved

by Christ,” he said.

His wife Cindy poses proof of the effectiveness of his ministry.

Cindy was once a young student attending University of Florida mocking Brother Jed with hundreds of other students when Brother Jed pointed her out in the audience.

“Wicked woman,” he cried, “repent!”

While Cindy laughed along with the other students, this accusation stayed with her for months. During Brother Jed’s next visit to her university, she connected with him and soon decided to give up her life to Christ.

They stayed in touch and were married four years later.

They now have five adult children and a granddaughter. All five of their children grew up while on the ministry road with them and are currently practicing Christians.

Brother Jeb’s website is full of testimonies of now-Christian students thanking him for his aggressive, Evangelist preaching style and hard work on campuses over the past 43 years.

His ministry and lifestyle is paid for completely out of donation by fellow believers and he appreciates all the publicity he can get.

By Merrit Peterson Staff Writer Two weeks ago, New Mexico State University Christian student group, Cru, invited controversial “ex-gay” pastor Brady Cone to speak in the Corbett auditorium.

Many students felt discriminated against during this event, and the LGBTQ community hosted their own event on Monday Feb. 16 featuring a panel of LGBTQ professionals from NMSU and the local community to discuss their own positive experiences with identity, spirituality, religion and life-success.

The President of Gender Diverse Aggies Zooey Sophia Pook, M.A., moderated the panel discussion that was open to audience questions at the end.

The panelists consisted of individuals of varying identities and faiths. Included panelists were NMSU Professor of English Elizabeth Schirmer, Ph.D.; Dean of Students Michael Jasek, Ph.D.; Events Coordinator of First Christian Church Naoma Staley, M.A.; Minister/Founder of Standing in the Gap Joshua R. Vanderhoof; Assistant Program Director of the News Mexico EDGE Marc Legarreta; and keynote speaker, former President of Exodus International, Alan Chambers.

pose of the meeting was not to condemn the event put on by Cru, but to invite all present to explore the idea of absolute inclusion of homosexuals in religion and spirituality.

During Pook’s introduction, she revealed her background as a transsexual woman receiving death threats and harassment while living in the Michigan “bible belt.” She also reported feeling the deep sense of pain and loss felt by the entire LGBTQ community when she heard about Cru’s invitation to Brady Cone to speak on the NMSU campus.

She encouraged people to not consider leaving NMSU or instinctively draw into a defensive position which could be detrimental to the LGBTQ community, but she encouraged the people that were hurt by the experience to adopt a radical sense of empathy to others and stay to adopt a strong sense of inclusion for others.

“Many members of the LGBTQ community wish this situation with the student organization that hosted the speaker would just disappear,” Pook said. “But in many ways we are benefiting by having to face these discriminations as it allows us the opportunity to be move forward to cause [religious and spiritual] inclusionary actions.”

NMSU English professor and self-identifying queer Schirmer recalls her experiences in finding her own personal identity in college by simultaneously being a spiritual person.She is currently a successful, active member in a local gay-friendly and family-friendly church and a solo parent to her adopted 4 year old child.

The keynote speaker of the night was Alan Chambers, former president of Exodus International, a non-profit inter-dominational Christian, umbrella network that provided connections to people hosting homosexual therapy designed to halt their homosexual desires.

Having been dishonest about his unfaltering attraction to men and one of the top promoters of gay reparative therapy for years, Chambers now travels around to universities and lectures about his time spent with Exodus International. Though he is married to a woman with two adopted children, he still does not identify with the phrase “ex-gay.”

Chambers said 99.9 percent of people who undergo homosexual therapy remain unchanged, and instead of being cured of their sexual orientation, develop a deep and overwhelming sense of shame, embarrassment, sadness and self-hatred at their inability to become straight.

The trauma people experience undergoing this kind of prayer based therapy not only often cause them to turn away from religion in general, but can cause deep psychological damage often resulting in depression and anxiety that takes years for people to work through with real therapists.

When Exodus International was still functioning, many homosexual individuals undergoing reparative

therapy committed suicide because of these feelings of self-hatred and hopelessness.

Chambers, who is now completely repentant about his days involved in reparative therapy, gave a devastating testimony about his experiences misleading homosexuals into believing they could change.

“Just like being on Weight Watchers doesn’t, ‘cure you’ of obesity, religious reparative therapy and prayer cannot, ‘cure you’ of your homosexuality,” said Chambers.

Fortunately, reparative gay therapy is not as widespread as it used to be, but for the individuals who experience it, it is still just as harmful.

“When I was part of Exodus International, I wanted to help people like me who have been told to be Christian they had to be straight to be better,” said Chambers. “But then I found in Christ that I was good enough.”

“This belief that gay people aren’t good enough causes gay people to walk away from Christ, the only one who truly accepts us,” said Chambers. “Salvation is for everyone. Some Christians are the only ones that don’t know.”

NMSU Wants You to Study Abroad

There may be no more active administrative office at New Mexico State University than the Office of Education Abroad.

From classroom presentations given by Clint Hourigan, an advisor in the OEA, to fliers tacked up on corkboards throughout nearly every NMSU building, to upright signs along the International Mall, to emails notifying students as to study abroad opportunities and scholarship deadlines, the OEA, and by extension NMSU, seems adamant in sending students abroad.

“New Mexico needs study abroad desperately,” said Kristian Chervenock, director of the OEA. This belief is what drives Chervenock and his office to promote studying abroad so widely around the NMSU campus.

But these efforts do not seem to be very effective, if you go by a report published by National Association of Foreign Student Advisers (NAFSA), a non-profit meant to increase international exchange.

In their report, “Study Abroad Participation by State Academic Year 2012-2013,” New Mexico had approximately 156,000 students, with less than 900 studying abroad. At 0.56 percent, New

Mexico had the lowest amount of students participating in study abroad in comparison to other states in the Southwest.

“When we advertise study abroad, we’re beating a dead horse many times on campus,” said Hourigan.

First, there is the cost consideration. With a study abroad budget funded entirely by student fees—$2 from every student each semester—NMSU has approximately $70,000 to fund study abroad scholarships, but is second-to-last in terms of how many of its students actually go out.

“In our opinion that’s no lack of effort on the half of our office to get the word out,” Chervenock said. “That’s fully indicative of students’ financial situation. Really, when it comes down to it, a lot of NMSU students just flat-out can’t afford study abroad, even though we try to keep it as affordable as possible with scholarships and exchange programs.”

To bridge the gap, the OEA actively seeks out scholarship opportunities, such as the Gilman, the Go Overseas New Zealand Scholarship, which offers a $15,000 award to study for a semester in that country, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, which is offering 50, $1,000 grants to un-

dergraduates who want to study abroad, the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA), which can offer up to $10,000 to study abroad, among others.

Universities with smaller study abroad budgets, such as Washington State with $20,000, have sent nearly three times as many students abroad as NMSU’s 279 in the 2011-2012 year.

“On top of the fact that NMSU students are already financially strapped to begin with, the OEA has fees that we charge,” Chervenock said. “That’s because we don’t have budget, we don’t get money to support our office from the university, so we have to charge that back to the students.”

Together with cost, “provinciality” was identified as another primary reason students do not study abroad.

“A lot of people from New Mexico aren’t leaving New Mexico,” Chervenock said.

Which is detrimental to New Mexico job opportunities, Chervenock said, because employers are looking for candidates who have strong “soft skills,” or who are able to think critically, solve problems, manage time and communicate effectively, which are, “All deemed necessary for success in a global workforce,” according

to the British Council’s “Culture at Work.”

“These soft skills are really enhanced through study abroad,” said Chervenock, and make students “21st century employees.”

In the hopes of decreasing costs, which will hopefully pop the “bubble,” as Hourigan termed it, which New Mexicans do not like to leave, Chervenock, as well as the director for the Global Education Office at the University of New Mexico, traveled to Santa Fe, Feb. 3-4, to each put in requests for $250,000.

This joint $500,000 would “support a greater number of students from across the state participating in study, internship, community service and research abroad,” as the two universities’ Student Global Preparedness and Study Abroad for Global Engagement proposal says.

“It’s (New Mexico) not the West Coast, it’s not the East Coast, we don’t have thriving Chinatowns and Koreatowns and people from all over the world,” Chervenock said.

This is why going abroad is important for NM students. In addition to increasing GPA and decreasing time to graduation, studying abroad “enhances global competitiveness,” said Chervenock.

By 2050, PricewaterhouseCoopers, one of the world’s largest professional services network, estimates the world’s seven emerging economies—China, India, Brazil, Mexico, Russia, Indonesia and Turkey—will be more than 50 percent larger than the seven most established economies—Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the U.K., the U.S., plus the European Union.

“You’re going to be applying for those jobs against people from around the world, people that have had study abroad experiences,” Chervenock said.

In order to promote and receive more funding for study abroad, NMSU has adopted several national initiatives, namely Generation Study Abroad in 2014.

This program is administered by the Institute of International Education, which also administers the Gilman Scholarship. By joining GSA, NMSU agreed to send at least 600 students from the main, Doña Ana, Alamogordo, Grants and Carlsbad campuses on study abroad programs before the end of 2019.

Chervenock said less than 2 percent of U.S. students study abroad.

“You’re going to be a part of a real elite club having study abroad on your résumé,” he said.

By Billy Huntsman Staff Writer My Valentine’s Day was very physical.

And by that, I mean I watched horror movies on Netflix and saw a lot of people get killed.

On the morning of Friday, Feb. 13, I found myself out of class at around 10:20. I had no more classes that day and was looking at approximately 75 hours of “I got nothin’ to do.”

So, I went home and scrolled through the titles currently offered on Netflix. I found and watched many. Most of them are garbage, which is not to say they were terrible; sometimes garbage can be good.

“Friday the 13th” This series has been sticking like a thorn in my side for as long as I can remember.

I’ve watched all of the Freddy Kreuger, Michael Myers, Chucky, Ghostface and Exorcist franchises and probably a few others, but I never got around to Jason Voor-

hees. I’d seen this particular installment many years ago and enjoyed it.

All this time later, I still enjoy it, and it remains the best installment in the Jason franchise.

Released in 1980, this was one of the founding fathers, so to speak, of the slasher genre. A group of college kids act as camp counselors during the summer. As they engage in the typical behaviors of camp-goers—swimming, having sex like rabbits, playing strip Monopoly (I’m taking this film’s word for it; I never went to camp)—a homicidal maniac butchers them.

This would be a fairly standard horror movie to today’s audience, but if you can forgive the film’s clichés, which weren’t clichéd upon its initial release, the film is very entertaining.

All the other “Friday the 13th” movies on Netflix show how quickly something fresh becomes foul.

After the first film’s success, Jason films were cranked out on as assembly line. As the first film helped bring in the slasher genre, so did the franchise help cement the formula for a typical hor-

ror series.

The kids go to summer camp as counselors, they have sex, Jason kills them.

It’s all mindless, but sometimes that’s what you need. You don’t watch these films for their dramatic nuance; you watch them because you want to see how Jason is going to kill everybody.

“Who’s that guy?” I said to myself during one of the films. “Eh, who cares, he’ll be dead in two minutes.”

And he was.

“Sharknado: The Second One” I resisted seeing the first film for so long that, when I finally did see it, I wanted to kick myself for stalling. I laughed until I thought I was going to throw up.

Then I saw the second film among the titles on Netflix. How long had it been there, why didn’t I see it before?

So of course I watched it.

It’s about a rainstorm so severe that it sucks up sharks into hurricanes, which hurl them through the air into the engines of planes

and dump them all over Manhattan.

How I wish I could have been in the room at the SyFy Films office when this film, or the first were being pitched.

Filmmaker: “It’s a…tornado…of sharks. Sharknado.”

Executive: “Stop drilling, you’ve hit gold.”

Throughout both movies, I kept doing the impression of Trooper Thorny from “Super Troopers.”

Me: “Mother of God…It’s a sharknado.”

That may have been why I enjoyed the movie so much. Hopefully, putting that thought into your mind will make you enjoy it also.

If not, Billy Ray Cyrus in the role of a medical doctor surely will.

“Leaving Las Vegas” So after so much junk food, I needed something healthy—cinematic protein, you might call it.

I can’t believe I found it in a Nicolas Cage movie.

I guess the fact that I liked this film is not so strange; even Roger Ebert found an Adam Sandler

movie he liked in “Punch Drunk Love.”

What I liked most about this film was its simplicity. Ever since his wife dumped him and took their kid, a has-been screenwriter, living in L.A., fills his empty nights and days with drinking.

At the end of his tether, he finally decides to cash in anything he owns that has value, buy all the booze in sight, move to Las Vegas and drink himself to death.

This is not Hollywood alcoholism, where the main character wakes up, grumbles and takes a begrudging swig of a half-empty Wild Turkey from beside his bed.

No, this is “I’ve made drinking my fulltime profession” alcoholism, this is going to the grocery store and filling a cart with clinking bottles; it’s “make you feel guilty for having a glass of cabernet sauvignon with your small Hawaiian pizza” alcoholism.

It’s funny, sad, horrifying, nauseating and any other adjective you could want. In short, it is a fine movie and especially redeeming after so much artery-clogging, if entertaining, hogwash.

Plastic Bag Culture

Brynn Herndon Staff Writer On Tuesday Feb. 10, three college students were shot. The incident took place in the evening at a condominium near the University of North Carolina’s Chapel Hill campus.

According to CNN, the victims were each shot once in the head, execution style. While all of this information quickly came to life on social media sites under the hashtag “#chapelhillshooting” major news outlets delayed paying attention to the issue until one or two days after the students were slain.

Many believe the reason for this delay is because the victims, Deah Shaddy Barakat, Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha were Muslim and their killer, Craig Stephen Hicks, is white.

Soon, though, the news articles began crawling out of the woodwork, and many of them weren’t worth the wait.

CNN, the New York Times and ABC News are trying to paint the crime as the result of a conflict between neighbors, or a dispute over a parking space and anyone who buys into that attempt at erasing the fact that a hate crime occurred in North Carolina probably does not pay attention to the world around them.

It’s the same pattern American media has always shown. A black gunman is a thug, a Muslim gunman is a terrorist, and a white gunman is just disturbed and misunderstood and in no way should be

held as an example of an entire race.

Craig Stephen Hicks is a murderer and is thankfully being charged for it, but this was not about a parking space.

According to CNN the youngest victim, 19 year old Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, had expressed worries about Hicks coming to their door and harassing them, and told her family that she thought the man just “did not like what [they] wear or the way [they] look.”

Barakat’s FaceBook page (still active as of this writing) has pictures of him and his wife offering dental work to homeless people in Durham, North Carolina. There are also pictures of his recent wedding and of his wife graduating from UNC. These were very real, very good people and when the biggest news outlets in the country couldn’t find a way to demonize them, they decided to say that these three died because this one crazy (because it’s still very easy to demonize the mentally ill) guy shot them each in the head over a trivial argument.

It’s no secret that America treats its Muslim citizens very poorly, and recent movies like “American Sniper” certainly don’t help. A few months ago, Buzzfeed managed to put together a disturbingly large post of Islamophobic tweets sent out by those who were “inspired” by the film. This is what people are calling “post-racial America.”

Deah Shaddy Barakat was a secondyear student at UNC’s school of dentistry and his wife, Yusor Mohammad, had just been accepted to study there next year. The couple wed in December 2014 and had not been married two months before they were murdered.

Yusor’s sister, Razan Mohammad AbuSalha was a freshman at UNC Raleigh.

Their family will miss them all dearly.

Since the late 1800s, paper bags have been the norm of carrying your groceries from the store to your home, but not until approximately one hundred years later, plastic bags have been introduced as a modern and convenient pandemic.

The material in which plastic bags are made is polythene, one of the most widely used and arguably controversial materials because of its inability to biodegrade. What makes plastic bags so dangerous is they are easily transported by wind and can travel hundreds of miles.

Since they can travel so far, they often make it to the ocean where it is accessible for marine life to consume, often mistaken for food, then eventually ending up on your dinner plate.

As sustainability is becoming more popular, the search for green alternatives is becoming more creative. People are making their own reusable bags. There are many different options for choosing reusable bags such as cotton, hemp, nylon and polyester. Some of these choices offer advantages such as durability, biodegradability and renewability, but some pose disadvantages, such as resistance to water, and contain plastics or nonrenewable materials. The quality of each of these alternatives is up to you to make them last. Having reusable bags takes out the constant need for plastic bags, and also the continuation of making reusable bags.

Santa Fe was the first city in New Mexico to ban single use plastic bags.

According to the Santa Fe city ordinance, “plastic bags that are 2.25 millimeters or thicker, are defined as reusable bags and are therefore allowed to

be given without a fee.” Bags that are exempt include plastic produce bags, restaurant and non-profit businesses that serve the needy.

Silver City, doing their part in helping the environment, is the second city in New Mexico to enact a town-wide ordinance ban which began Jan. 7 to outlaw single-use plastic bags.

According to the Office of Sustainability in Silver City, this ordinance encourages “the use of recycled paper bags and cardboard boxes, stores may charge for paper bags, sell, or provide reusable bags, reusable cloth and plastic bags and recycle, as well as reuse their paper bags.”

Statements on the Silver City SunNews Facebook page reflect how some people are in favor of and against the ban.

Anonymous statements from one person who is enthusiastic about the new ban wrote, “I think it’s great!! Hopefully there’ll (sic) not be any more of all these plastic bags clogging our local lakes and arroyos.”

Other anonymous statements from the Silver City Sun-New’s Facebook page from people who do not support the ban write negative comments such as, “Ugh!!

Dislike (sic)…” or “that’s stupidity.”

I feel such people do not realize the sort of environmental threat plastic bags pose is much larger than their inconvenience of bringing their own bags from home. These responses indicate no knowledge on what happens whenever a plastic bag is “thrown away” because there is no “away.”

It is our job to help those who are misguided or who do not easily understand what happens next time a plastic bag is thrown out. New Mexico is one step closer to helping preserve our planet.

Nothing To Do Blues

By Jesse Moya Staff Writer You’ve said it before, you’ve heard your friends say it numerous times and it has almost become a norm for you to tell your friends when they come into town to visit.

“There’s nothing to do in this town.”

These words have made every person who has lived in Las Cruces for a while cringe every time they are heard. The main reason they are said is simply due to the fact that our city lacks a major night-life scene near campus and is seen as a retirement community.

But with a town that holds the infamous party school, NMSU, how can one say

there is nothing to do here?

Sure after the third week of classes Dublin’s may seem a bit monotonous and Hurricane may have too high of an entrance cost to get in, but that doesn’t mean the city stops at Missouri. In fact, Las Cruces has so much to offer off-campus that many people couldn’t even fit it into one semester at school.

Sure Cruces has no nightlife like Albuquerque or other big cities, but we have a different type of entertainment that is unique to the area, more relaxed and hidden.

Several nights out of the week, open mics are scattered across the city, including some at your favorite hotspots like De

La Vegas on Monday night and Dublin’s on Thursday. Even Emilia’s in the Mesilla Plaza has an open mic you can attend every Thursday. If that’s not enough music for you, then there are several places around town that have musical guests weekly to satiate your curious taste. El Patio always has a great show lined up, as does HapHazard Hall. Even De La Vegas books shows for musicians who want to rock a house for the evening.

Going out not your thing? Why not hit the trails and explore the Organ Mountains behind the city? Or get lost in the history and mystery of Dripping Springs?

Hiking is free and the trails stretch on for miles. Maybe even grab a picnic and head

down to the river banks and walk along the Rio Grande.

If its travel you’re looking for, Hatch is just a small drive away, and on the way, why not stop at Blue Moon Bar in Radium Springs to catch some music before munching down at Sparky’s in Hatch.

The bottom line is that Las Cruces has much more to offer than just the university, this city has many things to do and see, and to possibly think to fit them all in one article is ridiculous.

You have to go out and find things to do in this town, and that’s what makes it so unique. Things aren’t put right in your face in Las Cruces; you have to get out and see them for yourself.

Oscar Javier Lopez Psychology Major “I feel like everyone is entitled to their own opinion and beliefs but the Christian preachers are crossing the line by making NMSU students feel uncomfortable. NMSU is a place of higher learning where we come to accept people from all walks of life, not bash, harass, or target one group of people.”
