The clothing, textiles and fashion merchandising students have previously had closed events for the staff, department and families, but this year the fashion show will be public, open to students, faculty and fashionistas alike.

Daedalus at work

By Julian Fahl Time moves slowly and the beautiful night spells out loneliness, while quick glances at a half hidden moon brightens clouds full of rain and a wind that is constantly changing direction intrudes and leaves a scattered foundation behind.

Below feeling cold, a man turns to stone moist before the rain began to fall.

Retrograde.

By Anthony Albidrez He is left once again standing on the sidewalks in the transition of autumn leaves.

Phantasmal in the skin he carries on his back, he charges forward the rippled clouds stared above, laughing.

The lake-sized cup of coffee, too small to swim in, swirled in retrograde.

Flashback and there would have been no mistake, but comeback and the flash of lightning cracked a crystal-clear vision of love.

His brown boots stomped through the puddles full of the city’s piss and spit, washing into the gutters.

The smell of sewer takes stage and keeps him awake.

His chocolate eyes, his slanted lips, and his thin gap in his teeth begged for another caffeinated swig.

He took his damn coffee and listened to the swinging music of life: a sound of hipsters shouting shut the hell up and stop dancing, so they can capture the moment on a camera phone.

New Mexico Legislature

& Students

By Isaac Morales Staff Writer The 2015 session of the New Mexico Legislature concluded on Saturday, March 21 with some good news and some bad news for people around the state.

For students, however, the passage of bills and their subsequent signature or veto by the governor is a matter of perspective and the following bills are more consequential for us.

Lottery Scholarship

As reported by Think New Mexico, a bill to repeal the requirement that “a minimum of 30 percent of lottery revenues be dedicated to scholarships” was voted down and did not pass the legislature. This ensures that the lottery scholarship has a certain amount of money guaranteed from the state lottery sales, and allows for more predictability in higher education planning based on the scholarship.

The most significant drawback, however, is the inhibition on growth such a requirement establishes. With at least 30 percent of lottery revenues set aside for the scholarship, the state lottery authority has its hands tied on growth opportunities.

Certain initiatives have been discussed such as selling at the gas pump, but those are marginal additions to revenue and do not seriously address the lack of sufficient funds for the scholarship. This is not to say that removing the 30 percent requirement would alleviate the strain on the lottery, but it would permit opportunity for expansion.

With the passage of the bill having failed, however, it is possible that the legislature may commission a study on the effects that removing the requirement might have. Should the study provide a positive outlook, addressing the 30 percent requirement ought to be done, while making sure to protect student interests against profiteering.

Food Tax

Senate Bill 274, as reported by Think New Mexico, was intended to impose a tax on groceries failed relatively quickly in the Senate. This tax was seen as a regressive tax, imposing more of a burden on those with lower income, and saw significant opposition.

The failure of this bill is good news for students, we are a poor bunch and for those who do not live at home, a grocery tax may have placed a difficult burden upon them.

SB 274, however, would have created roughly $100 million in revenue the first year according to the Fiscal Impact Report (FIR) filed for the bill. Furthermore the bill would have increased a “working families tax credit administered through the personal income tax system from 10 percent of the federal credit amount to 14 percent of the federal credit” according to the FIR.

Hemp Research

According to New Mexico Political Report, Governor Martinez vetoed a bill “that would allow the growth of hemp for industrial purposes” citing inconsistencies between state and federal language regarding the definition of hemp.

Senator McSorley, sponsor of the bill, said that the language used in the bill was the same as that used in the federal farm bill which did allow for growing hemp for research. Governor Martinez’ concerns, however arise from the thin line between marijuana and hemp.

“Given the similarities between growing hemp and marijuana, this legislation could also create serious challenges for law enforcement in investigating drug crimes,” wrote Governor Martinez in her executive message regarding the veto.

In this respect, Governor Martinez has a point in that the percentage of THC, the active chemical which produces the feeling of being high, is difficult to monitor in the growth of hemp to ensure it does not reach the level of marijuana.

The counter argument is that it is exactly because of that difficulty that hemp growth for research ought to have been legalized in New Mexico. With research permitted, a state such

Low Gas Prices Affect Tuition Rates

By Billy Huntsman Staff Writer In response to New Mexico State University’s recent tuition increase, many students are asking, “Why?” “The Round Up” last week reported State Representative Bill McCamley, DLas Cruces, venturing the theory that the increase was, perhaps, an inevitable result of decreasing funding from the state, due to lower oil and natural gas revenues.

“There’s been three major tax cuts in the last 10 years, and that means we rely more on oil and gas,” McCamley said.

“This year, obviously, everyone can go to the gas pump and see how low gas prices are. That’s great for your car; it’s bad for state revenues, and that affects the ability to fund institutions like NMSU.” To further investigate this theory, “The Round Up” consulted James Peach, regent’s professor of economics at NMSU. Feb. 19, Peach gave a presentation at the 2015 Economic Outlook Conference, during which he addressed the state of the New Mexico economy and its relationship with the oil and gas industry.

“The state budget is heavily dependent on oil and gas,” said Peach.

From 2010 to 2014, American oil was selling for $95-$105 a barrel. To take advantage of these high prices, the U.S. ramped up oil production approximately 50 percent.

An example of this, Peach said, is

fracking in North Dakota, whose peak production of over 38,000 barrels in December 2014 was second only to Texas, producing over 107,000 barrels in the same month, according to U.S. Energy Information Administration figures.

Starting in Fall 2014, oil prices began to drop. Today, oil prices are down about 50 percent from where they were at this same time last year, Peach said.

“This has had a big impact on the state,” Peach said.

What led to this decrease in prices?

“The simple answer is because we’ve produced so much oil around the world,” Peach said.

Oil production exceeded the demand.

In New Mexico, which ranks between eighth and ninth in the country in terms of oil production, produced over 120 million barrels last year, leading to economical booms in oil-rich parts of the state, such as Carlsbad or Hobbs.

Here, restaurant and hotel construction, as well as room rates, have increased, and the contribution of the industry to the state budget is estimated between 19-31 percent.

Peach said the state budget is determined by estimating revenues in the coming year. Continued decreases in oil and gas prices led to drastic revisions in budget proposals to the Legislature.

“In August last year, (it was) estimated

we would have $283 million in

new revenue,” Peach said. “In December, they had cut that estimate to $141 million. In January, they cut that estimate to about $80 mil-

lion.”

Peach said this final estimate depended on increases outside of the oil and gas industry.

“If (the estimate) had been only oil and gas, it would have been zero new money,” said Peach.

Of the $6.2 billion approved state budget, NMSU got approximately $1.1 million, said Peach and v e r i fied by a PowerPoint presentation by Angela Throneberry, senior vice president for administration and finance at NMSU, at the Board of Regents meeting on April 6, during which the tuition increase was approved.

“But that’s not enough to keep up with the increased costs of running a university,” Peach said. “And so in that sense, it

is correct that the fall in oil and gas prices has contributed to the need for a tuition increase.”

Peach said he believes it may be “quite some time” before oil starts selling for $100 a barrel again.

“The big names in the (oil) industry are laying off workers and cutting back on capital expenditures,” Peach said.

“And when they do that, those guys are assuming that the lower oil prices are going to last a while.

They don’t lay off workers without considerable thought.”

Peach said continued, lower oil a n d gas prices will lead to “a continued issue with state revenues.”

“When you take a hit in oil and gas in New Mexico, you’re taking a pretty serious hit,” Peach said.

Musicians, Keep Your Head Up

This is a different world compared to the world our parents grew up in.

In this world, the arts are not necessarily celebrated like they once were and due to that, musicians and artists have suffered in the realm of money making in this new century we are moving towards.

Bands used to be able to make money and actually establish themselves in their own town, and once they had paid their dues, they would tour and gain even more respect, and earn a bigger fan base.

The issue with today’s world is that musicians began shorting themselves, and not exactly knowing what their time was worth when asking for payment from the establishment they were playing at.

Musicians started going on tour without establishing themselves in their local music scene. Issues like this have made it hard for musicians to make it outside of an underground music scene, which is usually locally funded and, depending on your city, usually barely breaks even.

Today, nearly every musician knows bars are almost always off limits, they don’t pay well and the crowds are often less than supportive.

Local spots to play are often hard to find in cities like Las Cruces, and the pay usually isn’t enough for a person to consider their only job.

Many musicians are either retired, working several jobs, and still playing, or, my personal favorite, working several jobs and going to school. The reason behind this is we know RCA and Sony aren’t going to be knocking on our doors.

So why play music? Musicians do what they do simply for that fact that they like to do it.

They enjoy loading thousands-of-dollarsworth of equipment into a van and getting paid $50 for the entire night, well perhaps not the last part, but they just love to play.

That idea makes the music genuine and pure, exactly what rock and roll should be.

Going to a local show at the Trainyard meant you were about to see a band who was putting their heart and soul into the music, and they never cared how much money they were making from the show.

The touring band got most of the attention from the locals and every band on the bill was highly supportive of the fact. The locals were

there to have fun and support the music scene and by the end of the night, their merchandise tables were empty and they were still going home with some cash in their pockets.

So in order to make fun out of playing in a music scene like Las Cruces, there are some steps you can use to ensure it.

For one, understand this city is not known for its music on a national level and major companies are not coming to see bands here.

Second, music should never be about the money, if money comes later, great!

The focus should be about doing something you like, not getting paid. In addition, there are plenty of businesses around town who of-

fer open mics and opportunities for musicians to get their sound out and to get noticed.

Sweet CeCe’s on University hosts an open mic on Wednesdays, Emilia’s in Mesilla and Dublins both host one on Thursdays, and depending on the month, De La Vegas hosts an indoor open mic on Mondays.

This is a different era, and the times we are living in have small appreciation for music and arts, but staying with it is the most important part.

As long as someone is having fun and sticking with their interests, money will eventually come to those who work hard and persevere.

Men's tennis sets sights

on WAC Tournament

By Julian Martinez Staff Writer The men's tennis team have seemed to hit their stride at the perfect time.

The team's overall record may sit below .500, but the number that counts most to them at this point is the 5-0 record that they have posted in Western Athletic Conference play.

The team had a slow start out the gate this year, as one of the main reasons behind their lackluster overall record. They began the season 2-10.

Coach Carlos Vargas was able to attribute this to things outside of the teams control such as a bad flu incident that struck many of the teams key players.

“Our tennis was always there, we just couldn't get 100 percent out of everyone which is what you need in this team format. We had individuals playing good, but we didn't have the whole team playing good,” said Vargas.

The team's fortunes turned around during New Mexico State University's spring break for students as the team managed to win six of nine matches which mostly took place on the road.

One of the shining stars in the teams recent run has been Patrick Pfister, the senior from Dredsen, Germany. Pfister was recently named WAC Player of the Week for his recent success against Seattle University, where he went undefeated in both singles and doubles play.

“It means a lot for me, it was my last week of the regular season and I am real happy to get that title for this week since I am done with College Tennis (after this season),” said Pfister on what being named WAC Player of the Week meant to him in his final three weeks of collegiate tennis.

The strong finish puts the team in a strong position as they head into the WAC Tournament set to take place in Kansas City, Missouri this week. The Western Athletic Conference Tournament will begin on Friday and concludes on Sunday morning.

“We're not done yet and we'll continue to work hard towards conference and whatever else the future brings.” said Vargas.

Softball clinches

top seed

By Efrain Hernandez Staff Writer For the first time in 12 games, the New Mexico State softball team suffered their first loss in conference play after losing 3-0 to California State University, Bakersfield, this past weekend.

“I thought we had another solid outing from our pitchers, but CSUB showed a tough competitive spirit today,” head coach Kathy Rodolph said. “We played like we had a target on or back.

We need to adjust our mindset and instead put the target on any opponent we face.”

With the loss, the Aggies still remain in first place with a chance

to clinch the Western Athletic Conference at home when they take on Grand Canyon University in a three-game set.

The Aggies had entered Saturday’s matchup taking the first two games of the doubleheader with a 1-0 and 7-2 victory clinching the top seed in the WAC Tournament.

“It was nice to secure the top seed for the WAC Tournament,” Rodolph said. “However, in order to accomplish all of our team goals, we need to make sure we compete pitch to pitch. Karysta and Dallas both did a great job of doing this in the circle today. I am confident we will commit to that mindset tomorrow.”

Game one was a pitching battle from the start.

Through the first five inning, Karysta Donisthorpe and Kelsi Monroe held the opposing offenses scoreless until Lucy Padilla got the Aggies the on the board with an RBI single. This would be the only run of the game and Donisthorpe and Makayla McAdams held the Roadrunner’s scoreless.

Game two, fans saw the Aggies offense come alive defeating the Roadrunner’s 7-2. Through the first three innings, Dallas McBride and Lyndsay Klimenko were pitching shutouts till the Aggies put up a four spot in the fourth

inning including a three-run jack

by McBride.

Picking up three more runs is all McBride would need cruising to a complete game picking up her 12th win of the season.

Game three , the offense would be put down by Monroe, who currently leads the WAC in earned run average, according to wacsports.com. While the Roadrunner’s needed only one pitcher to complete the game, the Aggies needed three.

With McAdams getting the

start, she would last only 3.2 innings surrendering six hits while allowing three runs. Donisthorpe would relieve McAdams from duty and from there on out, McBride pitched the remaining two innings allowing a hit and no runs.

The Aggies will finish the regular season on the road as they take on the University of Texas-El Paso, in a double-header on Apr. 28. From there on, the Aggies will host the WAC Tournament, May 7-9.

In 2013 NMSU’s CTFM department was ranked no. 8 by Fashion-Schools.org for “Top 10 Fashion Schools in the Southwest.”

Joseph Bender, NMSU alumni 2013 graduate and a featured designer in the upcoming show expressed his enthusiasm for the recognition of the NMSU fashion department.

“This fashion show is important to myself and the other students. We finally get a voice where we never thought we had one," Bender said. "I hope we inspire the community and ourselves with what we present. We all work so hard to something that love and being able to share that creativity and energy with other is a great gift.”

The designers have been working for weeks to prepare their collections for viewing.

“It is a surreal feeling to see people wearing your clothes,” said Courtney Wright, designer and a senior spring graduate. “Clothing in general reflects so much about a person and being a fashion designer is somewhat like replicating your own skin. I am most excited about watching models walk down the runway wearing my designs.”

The show, organized by Graciela Estevez, will be complete with a local DJ, Legit Alph∆, hosted at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore at 7:00 p.m.

“It is very exciting that the show is being hosted at the Barnes and Noble campus bookstore, this allows for all the students hard work to be seen and for the program to gain some publicity, and become more known throughout the campus,” said Jamie McClure, designer in the upcoming show.

Does the show have a theme?

“Designers chose their own theme for their collections. As designers, they have the freedom to express their unique styles.

The point of the fashion show is for the designers to express their love and aesthetic in fashion,” said Estevez, the executive producer.

MEET THE DESIGNERS Senior Student Designers

Dennae Dominguez: “The theme of my collection is modern bohemian. It’s an organic bohemian feel with modern

elements. I’m inspired by colors, certain eras such as the '30s, '40s and '60s. I am influenced a lot by the different trends of the 60s, such as the structure and simplicity of the Mod style, and also the free flow of the hippy/flower child era. One of my favorite outfits from the collection is one called mosaic tunic. It’s actually the outfit I based my collection around. It is a tunic styled romper that gives the illusion of being a dress. The flow of the outfit and pattern of the fabric, really help the garment stand out. This outfit was actually one of the trickiest outfits I have ever made, it was a challenge but it is also something very original.”

Jamie Heckerman: “I am drawn to the fashion world by the work that is put into each garment. For me, the construction of a garment is an art form. Only the combination of skilled hands and a creative mind can evoke emotions such as reverence, admiration and confidence. It is fascinating to see unique looks created from a simple manipulation of details. When I design a look, I focus on creating a garment with unique trims and cuts that center around a classy, comfortable, and conservative appearance. My collection draws inspiration primarily from floral gardens for the women’s collection. I use layers of satins, chiffons, and laces in a variety of colors to create delicate silhouettes. The men’s collection focuses on the casual, clean cut look using comfortable suiting fabrics.”

Ricky Ruiz: “I find inspiration everywhere and at random times of the day. I tend to pay attention to things that can go un-noticed to everyone else and find beauty. I like to take inspiration from colors and patterns on objects found in everyday life. The feel of my collection is modern streamlines with a balance of femininity, sexuality and excess. One of my outfits in the collection is going to consist of a knee length pencil skirt in a black matte, sequin material featuring a slit in the thigh area to reveal a bit of skin. It will be paired with a checkered top with a princess seam."

Sarah Watts: “I am inspired by the contrast of shapes and form that can be found in nature; from strong, geometric shapes to simple flowing organic shapes, capturing a similar contrast in the form of wearable fashion is something that intrigues me. The overall look of the collection is simple, sophisticated and feminine.

There is an emphasis on the fabric and quality construction. There is a combination of tailoring and flowing pieces. One of my looks is a full-length gown that has a sweet-heart neckline with an illusion top

that comes up to the collar bone. It has a low back, the dress is made of white fabric, but has been dip-dyed to add some interest. This pieces is in keeping the rest of the collection. It is simple, unique and tailored.”

Courtney Wright: “I am very much inspired by landscapes, music and loungewear. My collection reflects a sort of eclectic mix of old and new. It’s kind of like a modern, vintage style. I like to describe it as ‘sophisticated hippie.’ My clothing is basic in construction, but heavily embellished. I like making simple clothing that has a unique touch to it. One of my looks is a tan, oversized, soft embellished sweatshirt with white satin shorts. This one of my favorite looks because it embodies the casual, yet elegant aesthetic I am going for.”

Also featured will be Joyce Gong.

Alumni Designers

Joseph Bender: “My collection is somewhat autobiographical. It’s inspired by a mixture of life events and the work of local artist Mamacass. After a drought of creativity and inspiration post graduation I gave up on a lot of things. I lost my voice as an artist and this collection is my resuscitation. Some of the pieces have an armor-like feel to them and gives the image of a strong woman, ready for battle. The wearer is powerful young female that mixes feminism and fearlessness in her fashion to give a beautiful yet strong presence. She radiates with a clean chic elegance every girl craves.”

Jamie McClure: “My aesthetic has a big focus on details and textiles. I enjoy using unusual fabric or textiles, for example home furnishing fabrics. One garment in my line features fake fabrics I deconstructed and place on a dress strategically to create a different texture and design. I wanted to create a somewhat dark look using light fabrics and floral elements. My theme for my line is supposed to be interpreted personally for each individual. It is supposed to represent life as a journey starting off happy or pure then something tragic or hard happens, how it changes you and how you come out of it.”

Revenge Porn

House Bill 142 was signed by the governor, making New Mexico one of nearly 20 states to have laws governing the phenomenon known as “revenge porn,” as reported by New Mexico Political Report.

As college students, social media is an inextricable part of our generation and issues of online harassment are prominent in our societal consciousness. Revenge porn, in particular, certainly crosses the line between online bullying and being a violation of a person’s right to privacy.

The bill makes a first offense for the crime a misdemeanor but any subsequent charges would be fourth degree felonies, which is a relatively just method of punishing those involved in such sexual harassment.

Beer and Wine Delivery

This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to anyone, April is one of the most packed months when it comes to raising awareness of things and providing weird holidays to us. However, a lot of people will see those random puzzle piece things raising money for the organization Autism Speaks and donate to them and then pat themselves on the back for it. Don’t do this.

Autism Speaks is essentially a hate group masquerading as a charity. They currently have no autistic members on their board of directors, though they once did, for a brief time. This member, John Elder Robinson, writes on his blog about his experience and his resignation.

“Autism Speaks says it’s the advocacy group for people with autism and their families. It’s not, despite having had many chances to become that voice,” Robinson says. “Autism Speaks is the only major medical or mental health nonprofit whose legitimacy is constantly challenged by a large percentage of the people affected by the condition they target.”

Autism speaks spends most of its budget on research and prevention, neglecting adults and families that are actually living with the condition (which AS often refers to as a “crippling problem”) that could benefit from their help. They spend most of their time looking for a cure, when many experts and researchers claim that there isn’t one. Autism is a developmen-

tal disorder, meaning it begins in the womb. There’s no curing that.

Look, I’ll be honest with you guys, I’m autistic. See how easy that was for me to say? Because I don’t feel the way Autism Speaks wants me to feel about it: incomplete (hence their stupid puzzle piece logo), guilty (for making my parents have to work harder or something) and intensely disabled and broken (nope, feeling good).

The only problems my autism has caused me is the stigma people like the directors of Autism Speaks have perpetuated for me and those like me. I don’t want to say being different is easy, it’s not, but me and a lot of other autistics don’t feel ashamed and we shouldn’t.

Don’t support an organization that hates us while claiming to want to help us.

“Hey Brynn,” you ask, “if you want us to partake in autism awareness, what do you want us to do?”

Donate to the Autism Self-Advocacy Network. They’re actually run by autistics and are decidedly less terrible. If you’d rather give your money to fund Autism Speaks’ wild goose chase for a cure then – no, I have no way to complete that sentence. Don’t do it.

If you want to help autistic people, which you should, then just do the bare minimum. Donate a dollar to ASAN. Stop using autistic or “retarded” as an insult on the internet. Stop speaking for us because you think we’re incapable of speaking for ourselves (I’m literally speaking for myself right now).Care. That’s all we really ask.

Here is where we all pour one out, but we will have to go outside and buy the drink ourselves before we can do so unfortunately.

Senate Bill 503 would have been an Aggie’s dream, allowing us to wobble in our shoes without even leaving our houses to do so. The bill, sponsored by Senator Ortiz y Pino, would have permitted wine and beer deliveries along with certain food orders.

Furthermore, as reported in the “New Mexico Political Report ” Senate Bill 503 specifies that beer and wine sales would have to conclude at 9:00 p.m. on Sundays and at 10:00 p.m. during the rest of the week.”

As brilliant as SB 503 obviously was, the language was ambiguous regarding the purchase time frame and whether purchases made prior to the deadline would still be able to be delivered past it. Furthermore, the provisions included did not adequately account for safeguards against sale to minors.

Overall, it was a good session for students across New Mexico. We lost more than we won on certain issues but with support from the NMSU administration, our issues were kept secure.

Aggies conserve resources with help of sustainability council

By Kelly O'Connor Staff Writer Becoming more sustainable is as much of behavior change as it is a lifestyle change.

It can be as simple as turning off lights as soon as you leave a room or checking your thermostat. Learning ways to conserve water and energy can cut down on monthly water and energy bills and impact the environment in a very positive way.

“Sustainability is nothing but a paradigm shift, it’s a change, a change from 'I’m doing it this way, but I’m not going to do that.'

I’m going to buy water bottles, or I’m going to carry my own and fill it up; it’s a decision. All we need to do is give those choices out because a lot of people aren’t even aware of some of these things. Like what exactly is the impact of throwing down a candy wrapper,” Steve Stelf, sustainability council chair, said.

The sustainability council on campus promotes the reduction of waste as a way to achieve sustainability. The process of recycling can be more difficult than people think. Instead of growing a recycle program, it would be a better idea to not have any waste in the first place, Stelf said.

“If people really understood the process and what it takes to recycle, they wouldn’t buy the bottles,” joni newcomer, environmental policy and sustainability manager, said.

Ways to reduce waste of plastic bottles would be to purchase a water bottle that can be reused. On campus, several water bottle filling fountains have been installed to make this process easier.

Also, purchasing a mug or a travel mug

to carry coffee and other hot beverages will reduce waste of plastic cups as well. Using your own cup will cut down on money spent and will make a huge difference for the environment in the long run.

Having a set of utensils that can be washed and reused is another great way to reduce plastic waste. Bringing your own reusable shopping bags to the grocery store will not only conserve resources but will earn you a discount at some stores if you do bring one. Businesses like Starbucks also offer a discount to customers who bring in their own coffee cup.

Other ways to be more sustainable and conserve energy, newcomer and Stelf recommend biking to school and to work.

The way New Mexico State University’s campus is set up, it is very biker friendly.

Public transportation is offered on this campus as well and is completely free. Public transit in the city of Las Cruces is also offered free to current students through the parking department office.

Consider taking the stairs if you normally use an elevator if you are looking for more ways to conserve energy. Not only does it cut down on energy use but it is very beneficial to your health in the long run.

Students are also welcome to attend the monthly sustainability council meetings held in Milton Hall. These meetings provide guest speakers to teach about ways to be more sustainable. Also the council finds more ways to make sure NMSU is maintaining its sustainability efforts.

Save the water

By Jesse Moya Staff Writer In the desert of the southwest United States, it is no secret that a drought has long been looming over the region for several years. Arid climate and lack of rainfall have led the water supply in southwest cities to drop with that number becoming frightening in New Mexico especially. The drought has affected people in the area severely by reducing the water allotted for crops and has changed the landscape from, what once were river, now dry, sandy remnants of a better time for crops.

Though the increasing drought might scare those unfamiliar with living in the desert, locally, it has severe implications that precipitation is more than needed. Humans cannot control the weather, however increasing in popularity in cities in New Mexico is the idea of water conservation and developing ideas of how to use less water but still get along.

According to the Office of the State Engineer, a leaky faucet that lets out nearly a drop per second can actually waste up to 192 gallons of water in one month. Things like this can easily be fixed and save a good amount of water in the long run thus providing a small, but significant, change in water consumption. Little changes and repairs like this can help save thousands of gallons of water and alleviate some stress on those keeping a careful watch on water in the area.

With Earth Day’s passing, it is important to keep in mind that helping the earth also means conserving water and being smart with the water used. Rain is scarce this time of year in New Mexico, and the National Weather Service has stated the drought is due to continue into the early summer months. So, expect a dry and hot Cruces summer. Wasting water is a dangerous activity to participate in during a drought, and there are ways to get around wasting even the slightest, smallest bit of water.

In order to beat the lack of water in the southwest, conservation is the best answer and this can be achieved by either reducing the amount of water used or re-using the water in the house. There are many ways to

do so, and the use of this used water is actually safe for anything that doesn’t involve humans or animals drinking it. The water collected from drains or runoff is called grey water.

“By using grey water, we save our fresh water supplies by not applying drinking water to landscape plants," according to the Office of the State Engineer.

Grey water is any water that goes down a drain and doesn’t come from a toilet or a kitchen drain. This water can be collected from bathtubs, shower drains and laundry washers and stored in a tank for later use on decorative plants. It is not recommended that the water be used for consumption, this means that watering veggie gardens with grey water is off limits, unless the water goes through a filtration process.

Grey water is still usable and is often just discarded as if it had been soiled. Grey water is a valuable resource to New Mexico as every drop of water counts towards saving the landscape.

As a small step towards water conservation, another recommended method is the collection, storage and reuse of rain water.

Though in New Mexico in the summer, the obvious hope is for a massive monsoon to pass by, collection of rain water can prove to be difficult. Rain is few and far between and the fact is, in order to use water, water is needed. Rain water should be treated just like grey water and not used for consumption, but for watering outside plants or cleaning off yard tools. Though collecting rain water is a small step, it can greatly reduce the fresh drinking water used for tasks that don’t necessarily call for its use.

The bottom line is that humans need to use water for various tasks during the day. These tasks include washing clothes, bathing or just plain drinking it out of the faucet. Reducing the amount of water used every day can actually help to save water for when it is really needed, and not for the fishes in the ocean but for humans in the desert. Residents of the desert should take cautions as far as the possibility of water shortages and look to prevent that. Water is a precious resource in New Mexico, saving what we can for later use can greatly impact the future of the state and will lead to a more sustainable state.

Not all men are stupid horndogs

By Billy Huntsman Staff Writer I was walking to class the other day and I passed a car parked beside the curb. My attention was immediately drawn to a decal stuck on the car’s rear window: “God bless Sasha Grey.”

In case you’re unaware, Sasha Grey is a former porn star. As far as my research has revealed, she worked in the industry for three years before retiring at the age of 21.

In those three years, she starred in enough movies to make Liam Neeson look lazy, and in the process received many award nominations, winning such accolades as Best Group Sex Scene for “Fashionistas Safado: The Challenge” at the 2007 Adult Video News Awards.

Apparently, and as evidenced by the decal mentioned above, she was and remains a very popular figure in the industry.

Why am I telling you all this?

Because I want you to have some background information before I launch into my tirade.

There are not words strong enough to express how pissed off this decal made me.

Why did it have such effect on me?

Because it only strengthens pop culture’s stereotype that all men are stupid, sexcrazed troglodytes.

I’ll give you an example: in how many movies and/or TV shows have you heard a joke to the effect that men’s brains are found in our penises? In how many movies and/or TV shows have men been portrayed as fools, buffoons, careless, insensitive idiots?

I’d estimate probably 95 percent of humor found in movies, advertisements and TV shows hinges on men acting the part of the horny moron.

Why do I get offended when I see such

portrayals?

Because it sends the wrong message to men. When I hear a character say to a male character, “We all know where your real head is at,” it says to me, “You’re an idiot because you’re a guy.”

This is a ridiculous concept. I am a guy, and I am neither sex-crazed nor a buffoon, and I know plenty of similar guys.

But I also know plenty of guys who fit the mold of the horny moron. I know they weren’t born that way, it’s a learned behavior.

So how did they get that way?

I blame pop culture and those half-assed hack jokes. They tell guys, such as the owner of the car with the Sasha Grey decal, “It’s okay to do stupid things; you’re just a guy, the world doesn’t expect you to be intelligent.”

All guys are not stupid, we think about plenty more than sex. It is not okay to perpetuate this stereotype, just as it is unacceptable to reinforce the stereotype that the only beautiful woman is a thin woman, or that women should be smart, chaste little angels.

I know stupid, sex-crazed women and sensitive virgin males.

I am not an advocate for men’s rights, nor do I sympathize with Men’s Rights Activists, which, Brynn Herndon’s opinion piece in “The Round Up’s” last issue can tell you, is misogynistic and anti-feminist.

What I believe in is abolishing double standards and hypocrisy. Allowing men license to do imbecilic things, such as putting up a “God bless Sasha Grey” decal on our cars, simply because we are men is as senseless as expecting all women to be great cooks and housekeepers.

The only differences between men and women are anatomical. Otherwise, we are the same, and so what you expect from one sex must be expected from the other.

A Hot Mess

Registration for the Fall 2015 semester began April 9 at 5:00 in the morning.

I know this both because it’s pretty much common knowledge and because I woke up at 4:45 that Thursday morning and refreshed the myNMSU registration page for 15 minutes because I had to get into a class that was the only one of its kind being held next semester that has only 12 seats and is required for my degree. There’s still no guarantee it won’t be cancelled, as many other classes like it have been before – the primary reason I (and without a doubt, many other students both within my major and without) have to take an extra semester to finish.

For some departments there are good reasons why classes are only held every so often. According to chemistry professor Dr. James Herndon, science-heavy departments reliant on research labs have to funnel a significant amount of money into up-to-date equipment and materials.

For other departments, though, the reason for holding required classes with an infrequency that feels like it could be described as “when they feel like it” is more of a mystery. Many departments, like English, seem to just have to pay for professors to teach.

By not offering classes that are required for graduation, or, in my case, not offering enough classes to accommodate the number of students who need to take it to graduate in a reasonable amount of time, New Mexico State University is costing students valuable time and money. Scholarships

like the New Mexico Lottery Scholarship only offer funding for four years (which also makes little sense, as most people do not graduate within four years anymore), so those extra semesters are costly.

I mean, I know this works out in NMSU’s favor – more money for them – but they should at least pretend efficiency is still a priority.

There are definitely other problems with registration, too. Classes being offered with no professors actually lined up to teach them. Classes being cancelled mere weeks before the start of the semester for reasons that, more often than not, remain mysterious.

The lack of reason for some of these issues is what gets me the most. If I didn’t just get an email saying the class I signed up for months ago was cancelled and instead got something saying “x class is cancelled because the instructor has fallen ill/developed conflicts that take priority/the universe is a hologram and nothing is real” then fine. Students will understand that professors are human, it shouldn’t be some sort of professional taboo to remind people of that.

I realize this all sounds indignant and whiny and I (along with others who have expressed the same concerns) should be more mature about this, but the bizarre practices with scheduling and the lack of transparency about them makes people suspicious and frustrated. Maybe I am overreacting, but when you’re paying $2,800 for an extra semester you shouldn’t have needed, you might be with me on it.

Read This, ((Don't) Watch That:

By Billy Huntsman Staff Writer I really wanted to like “It Follows,” if only for the reason that recent years have seen a dramatic decline in quality horror films.

Make no mistake: “It Follows” is a quality horror film, and that may be reason enough for you to see it.

But when/if you do, afterward you may find yourself strangely unaffected.

The film follows Jay, who I’m fairly certain is a college student.

The ambiguity of Jay’s age is only one of the things about which the film is non-forthcoming. This “discern for yourself” attitude is admirable—the filmmakers don’t condescend to us—but, at times, also frustrating.

Anyhow, Jay is a college student who, at the beginning of the film, is just getting serious with a new guy named Hugh. They go to a movie together, which is cut short by Hugh seeing someone he doesn’t want to see—a woman. Try as she might, however, Jay cannot see her.

So things continue on and they

go on another date, which culminates in the two having sex. The film takes a complete 180-degree turn at this point, when Hugh renders Jay unconscious with chloroform. She wakes in a deserted building, bound to a wheelchair, and Hugh explains to her what’s going to happen next: he’s passed something onto her, something which is going to follow her until she has sex with another person.

This is no STD, but instead a demon able to take the form of a normal-looking human but which everyone else cannot see. Just then, the demon appears in the form of a naked woman and slowly approaches Jay, still bound in the wheelchair.

The dread grows, the demonwoman stalking, stalking, stalking, but then Hugh seizes Jay and runs away with her. But the demon, slow as it may be, will never stop coming after Jay, not unless she can have sex with another and pass on the curse.

I really like the film for a lot of reasons, the first being that, truly unlike any horror movie I’ve seen previously—and I’ve see quite a

few—the film has an organic reason for its characters to have sex, rather than it just being gratuitous and for the purposes of luring horny teenagers into theaters.

I also appreciate the film’s aesthetics—it has the ambience of an ‘80s horror flick without the crappiness. Whenever the main characters are together, they have cans of soda, invariably the same, with the same generic “Cola” printed on the can, looking straight out of a time when product placement was not only looked-down-upon, but a taboo, never to be violated without the most extreme social consequences to the careers of the filmmakers and actors.

The film is artful and thoughtful, and for those reasons I desperately wanted to like it, felt almost obligated to do so.

But try as I might, watching the film, I found myself bored. I don’t mean occasional periods of a few seconds; I mean whole scenes.

The creature’s stalking after all the main characters is meant to inspire fear and dread and suspense, and it does that—in the beginning.

But then, after happening too

many times, it becomes dull and sleep-inducing.

The acting is decent, particularly from Maika Monroe (Jay) and Keir Gilchrist, a friend whom all the others characters, including Jay, seem to know is head-overheels in love with Jay. The directing has the energy of a young director fresh out of film school—which David Robert Mitchell is not—but with the almost-maddening stoicism of Ingmar Bergman. The shots are long, requiring both the continued attention of audience members, as well as skill on the actors’ parts in order to endure such shots and compel viewers.

This is no accident. In a profile in “The Detroit News,” Mitchell lists among his filmmaking influences Alfred Hitchcock, whose 1948 film “Rope” seems to be shot in one long take, but is rather craftily edited in order to appear so.

The reason why this filming method compels in “Rope” and bores in “It Follows” is simple: the difference in acting skill of the actors, as well as interesting actions.

“Rope” has Jimmy Stewart, in-

stantly commanding the screen anytime he appears in frame, and though the film is heavy with dialogue and rather light in physical actions, what is said is said with such gravity and urgency as to be gripping.

“It Follows” has really no recognizable actors, which is not a deathstroke; but the actors are inexperienced, can’t conduct themselves with the same confidence Stewart had.

“It Follows” is heavy on physical actions and light on dialogue, which may not be in the film’s best interest. There is a very good reason as to why almost no films are silent nowadays: noise, dialogue, keep viewers engaged.

“It Follows” is not a terrible movie. In fact, it may be close to an arthouse horror film, such as Bergman’s “The Passion of Anna” or Jonathan Glazer’s 2013 “Under the Skin,” the latter of which “It Follows” shares a number of similarities.

But arthouse isn’t for everyone.

And so I’d encourage you to watch “It Follows” only once it becomes available on Netflix or Redbox.

Aggie Filmmakers:

“Halftime Highlights”

By Billy Huntsman Staff Writer A documentary film made by a group of students in the Creative Media Institute at New Mexico State University is set to premier at the Rio Grande Theatre on May 5.

“Halftime Highlights” is CMI major Julian Monjaras’ senior project. It follows Las Cruces’ four high school marching bands, as well as those of NMSU, Deming and Ysleta High School in El Paso, as they learn their new shows in band camp in summer and culminating in a final performance of the Mayfield and Las Cruces High School marching bands at their football game on Nov. 12.

Monjaras said he wanted the topic for his film to be personal, and inspiration came as he was entering his fifth year with NMSU’s Pride Marching Band.

“So I was like, ‘Why not show the journey that marching bands go through?’”

Monjaras said. “And that’s what I initially started with.”

But the film’s scope broadened after Monjaras enlisted NMSU junior Katrina Marquez as producer. Marquez then reached out to local and regional high schools, asking for their participation in the film.

“It was June (2014) that I started trying to get (the high schools’) approval, get them onboard,” Marquez said. “It was a slow process at first, they were really busy preparing for band camp, so it was slow, a little discouraging at first, but slowly but surely they started contacting us again, they were like, ‘Yeah, it sounds like a great project, we’d love to be a part of it.’”

Once all six marching bands had agreed, Monjaras, Marquez and the rest of their crew started attending as many practices and performances as they could.

“The main thing that I was disappointed that we didn’t get was the Zia Marching Festival that’s held at UNM,” Marquez said.

This was unavoidable, Monjaras said.

“The company that (UNM) had hired to record (Zia) had a policy that they could be the only recording (presence),” Marquez said.

Another filming opportunity they faced difficulties with was the bands’ performances at the Sun Bowl at University of Texas – El Paso. Monjaras said staff and administration were uncomfortable being filmed because ABC hosts the Sun Bowl.

Despite these hindrances, they still man-

aged to acquire hours of footage.

“One competition that I went to in El Paso for Ysleta, I wasn’t able to get anyone to come and help me out (with operating cameras),” Marquez said. “So I took three cameras with me and I ran three cameras by myself at the same time.”

At the same time, Monjaras said, NMSU’s Pride Marching Band was performing at a home football game. While Monjaras marched and played trumpet, camera operators filmed from the sidelines, as well as from the stands and the crow’s nest.

Monjaras said he hopes audiences will take away a greater understanding of marching bands. A further focus of the film is the value of hard work and how rewarding it can be.

“From that first day of band camp and watching the freshmen learn how to march and then final performance at the last competition and just being wowed by this incredible show that they put on in just a couple months,” Marquez said. “That was the most rewarding, memorable thing about filming.”

Monjaras said the film’s focus on “hard work ethic,” “wanting to finish something you start” and “finding identity” can appeal to more than just music majors or marching band members.

As someone not involved with marching band, Marquez said the film can have universal appeal because of its emphasis on music.

Monjaras said he hopes to show the film at festivals throughout New Mexico, eventually branching out to the Chicago International Documentary Festival. If the film is well received and gains a large enough following, Monjaras said he sees “Halftime Highlights” showing at the next South by Southwest Festival.

The film will premier at the Rio Grande Theatre on May 5. Subsequent showings will be held on campus on the 6th and 7th.
