He was the husband of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom for over 73 years. Son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg, he was a member of the Greek royal house by birth and the Britishbymarriage.
Asidefromhisroyalduties,hewasasponsor of many organizations, such as the Duke of Edinburgh Awards and the WorldWide Fund for Nature. He was also rector of the University of Cambridge, as well as that of Edinburgh. He published writings and gave talksonenvironmentalissues.

In2011,ontheoccasionofhis90thbirthday, he was awarded the title of Lord Grand Admiral of the United Kingdom, a title in reward for six decades as a British consort. When he was 96 years old, he decided to retire from his activities due to the difficulty that age generated him to fulfill his protocol schedule, having completed a total of 22,219 royalcommitmentssince1952.BetweenmidFebruary and mid-March 2021, he was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital to undergosurgery.
TheDukeofEdinburghpassedawayonApril 9, 2021, at the age of 99, inWindsor Castle, 2 months before his centenary.
Education
He received his early education at an American school in Paris. In 1928, he was sent to the UK to attend Cheam School. In the next three years, his four sisters married German nobles and moved to Germany, his mother was committed to an asylum after being diagnosed with schizophrenia, and his fathermovedintoasmallapartmentinMonte Carlo.Philiphadlittlecontactwith hismother during the rest of his childhood. In 1933, he was sent to the private school "Schule Schloss Salem" in Germany, where he had the "advantage of saving on school fees" because it was owned by his brother-in-law's family. With the rise of Nazism in Germany, the Jewish founderofthe Salem school, Kurt Hahn, fled persecution and founded the "Gordonstoun School" in Scotland. After two years in Salem, Philip became a student at Gordonstoun. In 1937, his sister Cecilia, her husband, George Donato from HesseDarmstadt, theirtwo young childrenand their mother-in-law died in a plane crash in Ostend; Philip, then sixteen, attended the funeral in Darmstadt, and the following year his uncle and guardian Lord Milford Haven diedofbonemarrowcancer.
Offspring
Together with his wife, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Philip had four children: Charles, Ann, Andrew and Edward; in addition to currently having eight grandchildren and eleven greatgrandchildren.
