Great Blue Heron Dennis Hough

Soon after moving to Bentwater, my wife, Jane, and I became smitten by the variety of bird species around us, including the Great Blue Heron.

Early, very early, one summer day, Jane and I went photo-hunting birds in our neighborhood (Waterford Way in Bentwater). We witnessed a golden dawn and an equally golden – no longer blue – bird performing an outlandish “dance of the Heron.” The golden display is a result of the early sun bouncing off sediment in the water. The dance explanation is harder. There were no other birds about, so was he trying to attract attention? (The "he" could have been a "she" as there is no outward difference in appearance between the male and female.) Or, did we stumble onto a bird expressing joy of a beautiful sunrise?

Heron “fish” by standing still in shallow water, waiting for a fish or insect to come within striking range. Some industrious herons stealthily slip through their territories, head down cocked and ready to pierce the next available fish, crab, frog or insect. Her-

ons have been seen delicately placing insects to float on the water as bait while remaining perfectly still. Then, faster than a speeding bullet, the hapless fish is dinner! The Great Blue and other herons are not above tracking down food on land or diving into deep water.

The Great Blue Heron nests 30 – 70 feet in the air, amongst dense vegetation. Our guy flew high above Meadow’s pond to avoid the picture-taking humans. He was the only heron in the park that day successfully guarding his several hundred yards of temporary feeding territory.

These herons nest in small colonies or alone. Their nests are large consisting of sticks lined with finer twigs and vegetation.

Is this bird a throwback to the Jurassic era? I don’t know, but when looking into its emotionless and steady eyes, I see the pterodactyl. Scientists would have us believe all birds descended from 160 million years ago. No argument from me, at least for the Great Blue Herons.

Bentwater Volunteer Families recently hosted a CPR training class for its members, taught by a mobile CPR company called CPR STAT LLC. Owners Donnie Savoy and Marcus Phillips instructed the course at the Bentwater Yacht Club, providing video demonstrations and hands-on experience for all.

Members practiced learning and using the ABCs of CPR. The instructors also taught the group what to do should an emergency arise at different locations such as at a grandparent’s house or in a crowd.

Because babysitting can be an important part of a teen’s life, there was a great deal of time spent practicing on smaller dummies and talking about toddlers.

Choking emergencies were also addressed.

All who participated walked away not only certified in CPR but also more confident in what to do in emergencies.

The holiday season is in full swing. We want to remind you of some very important deed restrictions to remember as you welcome guests to your home for holiday festivities.

It’s up to all residents to keep their yard light operational at night to provide light in the neighborhood and safety to all.

RV Parking

Parking No overnight street parking for vehicles with decals. Property owners should park in the garage. Guests should park on the driveway; only guest overflow should park on street.

For family traveling in with RVs, RV parking is restricted to 10 hours in the driveway. Permission for extended parking of RVs at the Marina may possibly be obtained at the Marina. Call Rob Brown at 936.597.2556 for more information.

Faith Fighting Cancer

I n M ontgomery C ounty Hello Beautiful Boutique in Conroe recently hosted its second annual "Pink Power Shop-A-Thon" to benefit Faith Fighting Cancer in Montgomery County, with a portion of the sales plus raffle proceeds going to the nonprofit organization.

Since 2010, Faith has raised more than $300,000 to help area cancer patients and their families. The organization assists Montgomery County families that may have trouble finding help elsewhere and provides educational services and preventative testing for men, women and children.

None of the staff members is paid and 100 percent of donations are received by residents of Montgomery County.

A Tea with Santa’s Helpers, helping to fulfill the wishes of Pediatric Cancer Patients in Montgomery County, will be held on Wednesday, December 7, 2016.

The holiday season is a time we look forward to each year. As you plan ways you will spend time with family and friends, please keep these important safety tips in mind.

Holiday Shopping - As you approach your vehicle, give it a visual check and have your keys ready to open the door.

- Leave nothing in the interior of your vehicle to temp thieves. - - Lock your packages and valuables in the trunk.

- Park in well-lighted areas and as you leave your vehicle, walk out in the open area.

- Carry your purse close to your body and don’t leave it in your shopping cart as you shop.

- Check your credit card statement. If you see purchases on your credit card statement that you did not make, immediately contact your credit card company.

- Holiday Home Security

- Turn off your Christmas tree lights when you leave the house.

- Keep live Christmas trees watered (dry trees are subject to fires).

- Remember to have your chimney cleaned for winter use.

- If you are traveling during the holidays, make sure your house doesn’t look vacant.

- Set automatic timers for lights so the house appears occupied.

- Ask a neighbor to pick up your newspapers and mail.

- Don’t use social media to inform the world you are on a holiday vacation.

SHSU Concert Series Dazzles!

The first of a series of five Sam Houston State University School of Music concerts took place on Sunday, October 16, at the Bentwater Yacht Club. And what a concert it was!

Amazing saxophone and piano duo selections were performed by Dr. Scott Plugge, Chair of the Department of Music, accompanied by a no less than extraordinary faculty pianist. The larger part of the music was performed by an all-student steel drum ensemble.

The musical selections were well chosen and great fun with familiar tropical beats and rhythms reminiscent of faraway island getaways. The Bentwater audience was not a bit shy about asking questions. The student musicians replied with knowledgeable and sometimes humorous responses. In addition to great music, the audience received a few abbreviated history lessons (handout included) about the musical instruments they were using and the origins of the musical selections. Lindsey: I decided to major in business marketing because I love meeting and working with new people. I love being creative and exploring my imagination. In marketing, I really get to understand why consumers buy the products they do and that is so intriguing to me. Marketing is never the same and there is always something new to be

We are halfway through the 2016-17 fiscal accounting period, which runs from July 1 thru June 30 each year. Homeowners often have questions about the accounting methods used in Bentwater POA financials. I am taking the opportunity now to explain the financial reports we use and the purpose of each.

Financial reports have two primary purposes: To provide users with the financial data needed to make decisions relating to the association’s financial position To enable the Board of Directors to control the association’s financial operations.

Financial reports are the primary source of information on an association’s financial results and condition.

Two Accounting methods are used in the Bentwater POA financials Accrual Accounting -Records income when earned or billed and expense when incurred Fund Accounting -Separates the association’s financial activities into two principal funds: The Operating Fund and a fund or funds for future major repair and replacements, i.e., Street Replacement Fund and Working Capital Fund.

Monthly financial package includes: Balance sheet – The purpose of the balance sheet is to show the financial position of the association on a specific date which summarizes: -Assets – what the POA owns -Liabilities – what the POA owes -Fund Balance – the difference between the assets and liabilities Statement of Income and Expense – Provides information on the association’s income and expenses over a period of time (month and year to date) with a comparison to the current budget for the same period.

If you have any problems, such as a billing question, water leak, sewer odor, discolored water, open manholes, alarms sounding, etc., please help us by calling: Hays Utility Service @ 936-588-1166. Hays has someone in Bentwater every day, seven days a week. They can and will respond 24 hours a day. Their general office hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Bentwater is a great place for golf cart traveling. We have the most beautiful courses to play and nice, wide paths for the commute.

If you own and operate a golf cart in Bentwater, however, you must do so responsibly. There are certain Deed Restrictions you must understand.

All types of golf carts must be currently licensed and Inspected for use on public roadways, or have a current permit issued by the Bentwater Country Club.

You may only drive a golf cart in Bentwater if it has a current permit issued by the Bentwater Country Club.

After a First Violation, a golf cart permit may be revoked either temporarily or permanently.

The Deed Restrictions also require any person operating a golf cart, or any vehicle regardless of type, to hold a current driver’s license valid within the State of Texas.

We encourage you to familiarize yourself with these rules and to always operate your golf cart in a safe and responsible manner.

A Deed Restriction Violation notice and a corresponding fine may be received if the cart is not operated within the deed restrictions.

Home Tour

When Bentwater residents make a commitment to do something, they give it their all. That is certainly the case each year when families commit to taking part in the BLO’s annual Holiday Home Tour. It is always a great time when we get to tour the homes of our neighbors and see how beautifully decorated they are for the holiday season.

Treasure

Bentwater’s annual Trash & Treasure Sale always draws a crowd and this year was no different. Shoppers showed up early with their comfy shoes on, ready to hit the ground running. And the weather could not have been better!

Bentwater residents and vendors took over a large lot outside the main gates, setting up booths filled with treasures. The POA provided the land and residents and vendors brought in anything else they needed to display the items they wanted to sell.

The POA offered reduced booth prices for residents as well as great deals for outside vendors.

Several area businesses took advantage of the opportunity to reach out to Bentwater residents and others in the community by putting their products and services on display.

Shoppers showed up early, looking for great items and bargains.

The event was a huge success as visitors truly walked away with treasures. A concessions booth was also available when shoppers needed a snack or a beverage.

At the end of the event, many participating residents donated the items they did not sell to a charitable organization. All they had to do was leave the unwanted items on the ground near their booth and the POA staff took care of it.

It was a great way for residents to clean out their closets and allow their unwanted items to be someone else’s treasures.

Given your business expertise and the nature of what you do, what advice can you offer to the residents? Often I am asked – “when should my child start getting eye exams?” I recommend eye exams prior to starting Kindergarten. Al- though if a child has an eye turn or does not engage in activities such as drawing, coloring or other up-close activities, it may be an indication of an uncorrected prescription that can hinder the child’s development. So if you see these behaviors prior to Kindergarten, they should be seen immediately. We can see children as young as newborns. And, of course, everyone should have an eye exam

How did you decide on this industry? I went to Houston Baptist University for my undergraduate degree. While in school, I worked part-time in eye care, starting as an optician. I quickly came to love working in the field. So it was a natural progression to go on to optometry school. I graduated from the University of Houston, College of Optometry in May 2006.

Where did you grow up? I was an Air Force kid and grew up all over and graduated from high school in Okinawa, Japan, at Kadena Air Force Base.

Tell us about your family: I am married to my wife, Amy, and have two children. We live in Conroe and attend The Woodlands United Methodist Church.

Antiques Club Takes Spooktacular Tour Barbara Crystal

European antiques and a vintage Halloween collection were on display at this year’s Antiques Club Tour of Homes in October.

The tour started at the home of Lynn Guilbault, who talked about many of her fine European antiques, some of which were acquired during the time she lived abroad. On display were pieces of blue Jasperware and Wedgewood, inlaid tables, an antique music box, cups and saucers, Murano glass, crystal and curios. In a wall niche was a breathtaking sculpture in marble of a woman.

Dot Wiggs hosted the next home on the tour, which featured a delightful collection of vintage Halloween materials. From witch masks and noisemakers to black cats, pumpkins and scary skulls, Dot’s collection brought back memories of Halloweens past.

It was a fun, seasonal display.

As with all good Bentwater events, we then headed out for antique shopping and lunch.

The last event of the year for the Antiques Club will be a party at the home of Sandra Askew.
