The assistance of residents is necessary in order to improve the quality of data that is being captured by both the City and TCEQ. Many residents are posting the air quality events on Facebook or other social media outlets. Residents should report their issue directly to TCEQ/the City of Pearland. All smells should be reported to the City of Pearland at 281.652.1900. The City is responding to these requests and making customer contact 24/7. Once City staff responds to the complaint, they will drive the area and attempt to document the boundaries of the odor event. All other environmental complaints regarding odors can be submitted to the TCEQ by calling the Houston Regional Office depending on the type if odor: Unknown, chemical, or mixed odors/visible emissions/other air issues – Air Section: 713.767.3714 Landfill/garbage odor – Waste Section: 713.767.3641 Sewage/Wastewater – Water Section: 713.767.3676

All resident complaints must be registered with TCEQ/City of Pearland by an individual, detailing the specific concern in order for the complaints to be effectively handled. If there is an odor, provide an intensity ranking from 1 to 5 (1 being minimal and 5 being extreme). By tracking this information, we can begin to establish a more exact map of the affected areas for each event.

HOW TO DECODE YOUR PLASTIC Author: Take Care of Texas

Do you throw all of your plastic containers and bottles in the recycle bin? A little-known fact is that in some cases not all plastic can be recycled through your local program! There are many different types of plastic, making it challenging for recycling facilities to accept all plastic products.

WHAT TYPE OF PLASTIC DO I HAVE?

The Society of the Plastics Industry developed a classification system to identify different types of plastic based on its chemical makeup. Plastic products are printed with a number, ranging from one to seven, that is known as the SPI code. This number is accompanied by chasing arrows, which look similar to the recycling symbol. Don't be fooled–this symbol does not necessarily indicate that the item is recyclable in your community. It is important to identify the SPI code printed on your plastic item and check whether your local recycling program is able to accept it. Most recycling programs accept some, but not all, types of plastic. Be sure to recycle only those plastics collected by your local program!

1 (PETE or PET)

5 (PP)

2 (HDPE)

6 (PS)

3 (Vinyl)

7 (Other)

- Water, soda, and juice bottles - Peanut butter, salad dressing, and jelly jars - Microwavable food trays

- Yogurt tubs - Medicine bottles - Reusable containers

- Single-use shopping bags - Bottles for cleaners, shampoo, and detergent - Cereal box liners - Deli and meat wrap - Pipes, siding, fencing, and railing

4 (LDPE)

- Takeout containers - Packing peanuts - Disposable cutlery and cups - Reusable water bottles - Oven-baking bags - Citrus juice containers

- Shrink wrap - Bags for produce, bread, and frozen foods - Container lids

ITEMS TO WATCH FOR PLASTIC SHOPPING BAGS Single-use plastic bags cannot always be placed in your recycling bin and loose plastic bags can actually clog the equipment at the recycling center. Check with your local government or recycler to find out if plastic bags can be recycled in your area. If not, many grocery stores and "big box" stores have recycling bins for single-use plastic bags.

since caps and lids are often made from a different type of plastic. Advances in processing technology now allow caps to be recycled in most places, but you should confirm with your local recycling program first.

KEEP IT CLEAN Regardless of which category your plastic container falls under, always be sure to empty or rinse out your containers before placing them in the recycling bin. PLASTIC CAPS AND LIDS Historically, consumers were advised to remove caps Dirty containers, leftover liquids, and food waste can from their bottles and throw them away before recycling contaminate all of the other items in the recycling bin.

BBQ TIME!

THE GRILL—NOTHING SAYS SUMMER LIKE A BARBECUE. The most memorable events of the season often occur when the sun is shining, friends are gathered and meat is grilling. With a little bit of knowledge and preparation, you can make this your best and safest summer yet. Here are five tips to make sure everyone at your cookout remembers the marinades — not the mishaps.

1

PROTECT AGAINST THE SUN Summer safety starts before you head outside. A barbecue usually means several hours spent in the sun, which can lead to painful sunburns and potential long-term damage to your skin. Fortunately, with a little bit of preparation, you can enjoy the summer sun and make safety a priority at the same time. Don a hat and a pair of sunglasses to protect your face from the sun. Apply sunscreen while you’re still inside and remember that children will need help to ensure they are fully covered. Make sure you bring the sun protection with you, too. A single coat of sunscreen won’t last all day, so understand how your sunscreen works and keep it handy for reapplication. The grill might be sizzling, but you don’t have to.

2

STAY HYDRATED Now that you’re ready to go outside, make sure you drink plenty of water. Hydration is vital to your health and it’s all too easy to become dehydrated in the summer heat. You should always be mindful of how much you are drinking, but it’s especially important when you’re out in the hot sun. Carry a water bottle with you so you always have water on hand, and encourage children to drink enough throughout the day. It’s easy to get caught up in socializing or playing, so schedule regular water breaks for your family to make sure nobody is having so much fun that they forget to drink.

3

PRACTICE FOOD SAFETY Summer barbecues offer great grub, but they also present unique challenges for food safety, including transportation, keeping perishables cold and ensuring meats are thoroughly cooked. Even if you

8

VOLUME VIII, ISSUE 7 2017 SHADOW CREEK RANCH

have 20 hungry people eyeing the grill, it’s important to remember basic food safety and sanitation rules. After all, you don’t want everyone to love your bratwurst right up until they get violently ill. Pack and transport perishable foods in plenty of ice to keep them out of the temperature “danger zone.” When grilling, ignore your neighbor who insists you can poke a burger to test doneness—always use a meat thermometer to ensure you cook all meats to a safe temperature. Avoid cross contamination, and never put cooked meat or any other prepared food on a plate that held raw meat. And skip the egg salad that’s been sitting in the sun for hours. Cold foods that get too warm are just as dangerous as hot foods that cool down too much.

4

REMEMBER GRILL SAFETY Save the fireworks for the Fourth of July: make fire safety a priority. Grill fires are unfortunately common. Thousands of people injure themselves while using grills every summer, and people even lose their homes to grills gone wild. Many of these fires are preventable with proper maintenance, so clean your grill regularly and inspect it for damage or leaks before you turn it on. Once the flames are going, keep a safe distance between your grill and anything flammable (like your house, for example), and always keep children away from the immediate area. Most importantly, be prepared to react quickly if flames get out of hand. Have a fire extinguisher within reach, and make sure you know

how to use it before you light the grill. Everyone will enjoy their food more if your house is still standing.

5

WATCH THE WATER There’s nothing better than cooling off at a cookout with a dunk in the water. Whether you’re attending a poolside party or just filling an inflatable kiddie pool for the little ones, be mindful of water safety. Accidents can happen in just a few inches of water. Teach children basic pool safety, and never leave

them unattended around water for any amount of time. You might also use the summer season to enroll children in swimming lessons. For your own peace of mind, take a first aid class. Knowing you’re ready to respond to an emergency can help you relax and enjoy your dip even more. A bit of preparation and extra caution can make every summer barbecue a safe, enjoyable experience. Whether you’re hosting a cookout or just attending one, use these tips to keep everyone healthy, happy and well-fed all summer long.

BURGERS FROM THE GRILL JUST TASTE BETTER. When a hamburger is done right, you know it–the smoky, char-grilled outside and the juicy inside, all barely contained within a chewy, toasty roll. That’s what a burger is all about! Here are some grilled burger basics. Use beef that is no leaner than 85%. Meat with a higher fat content will be juicier and more flavorful. But be aware, patties from higher fat meat will shrink more when they cook. If you shop at a grocery store or a butcher that grinds their own beef, choose coarsely ground beef for juicier burgers with a more pleasing texture. For ground chicken and turkey burgers, add a little olive oil to the mixture. Add just about anything you like to your burger mixture. Here are a few flavoring suggestions: • Fresh or dried herbs and spices • Dehydrated or fresh minced onion and garlic • Seasoning mixes for soups or salad dressings • Your favorite cheese, such as blue cheese, goat cheese, Gorgonzola, feta, Stilton, Cheddar, or pepperjack • Prepared sauces including BBQ sauce, soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, Worcestershire sauce, hot pepper sauce, hoisin sauce, plum sauce, oyster sauce, salsa, or salad dressing • Other tidbits like olives, capers, chopped tomatoes, diced chiles, crumbled bacon, or minced ham Wait on the salt! Don’t combine salt into the mixture, especially if you’re not going to grill the

patties right away. Salt will extract moisture from the meat, leaving you with dry burgers. Instead, sprinkle each burger with salt right before you put it on the grill. Don’t Mix Too Much. Use a light touch when combining seasonings with the ground beef. If you mix it too much, your burgers will be dense and heavy. Let the Flavors Mingle. Leave the meat mixture (or patties) in the refrigerator for several hours to allow all the flavors to mingle. To form patties, wet your hands a little to keep the meat from sticking to them. If you make patties ahead of time, stack them on a plate separated by waxed paper and cover with plastic wrap before you put it in the refrigerator. Form a Good Patty. Don’t form patties too thick or too thin. A 3/4-inch thick patty is ideal. To keep patties from swelling in the middle, make small indentations in the center.

Gardening By the Moon ANNUALDEVELOP FLOWERING BLISS FROM PERENNIALS YOUR OWN Submitted by GREEN THUMB!!! Dr. Robert E. Moon Submitted by

Dr. Robert E. Moon July, 2017

For the most part, I think having a green thumb is overrated. Knowledge goes a long way in making people successful at gardening. I have listed 12 facts that will help you be a good gardener. 1. Know your soils. A soils test is very helpful in knowing what to do for your plants and turf. Just go online to http://al-labs-plains.com. This is the website for A & L Agricultural Plains Laboratories. On this site, you will find information telling you how to take a soil test and a form to fill out to send in with your test. The results are the key to what needs to be applied for healthier and more vigorous plant growth. 2. Know your hardiness zone. At Shadow Creek, you are in Zone 9 so do not fall in love with plants that will not survive in this area. 3. Know proper plant spacing. Plant accordint to a plant’s mature size. Over-crowded plants are unhealthy. Most labels on plants will give you the height and width of a mature plant. If not, there is always the internet! 4. Know what plants are native to your area. Native plants will survive our hot summer, periods of drought and most of the time, any rapid temperature changes in the fall. They are also more resistant to insect and diseases. And most importantly, they like our soils. 5. Know water requirements for your plants. Do not overwater. Your soils hold water! 6. Know how to select an interesting plant pallette. Do not plant too many of any one plant. Mix your planting. 7. Know how to mulch your yard. Mulching with a brown, double-ground hardwood mulch will

help to consesrve water and give your beds a neat appearance. Maintain mulching depth at 2 inches. 8. Know how often to fertilize. Fertilize your turf all your plants growing in the soil 3 to 4 times per year in march, May, July and September. Use an organic based, slow release fertilizer like Holganix. Fertilizer your container plantings every 2 weeks during with growing season with Miracle Gro plant food. 9. Know how often to apply a pre-emergent to help with weed control. Apply to your turf and beds 3 times a year in February, May and September. Use Preem or Halts to help prevent a weed invasion in your yard. 10. Know how to correctly prune plants. There are many books and information online for proper pruning of trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, etc. 11. Know to remove dead wood, dead leaves and dead plants from your landscape. Do this removal as soon as dead appears. Not only is this dead wood and leaves and spent blooms unsightly, by removing, you will know if the plant continues to decline and you will have time to react before it dies. 12. Know how to identify pests. Neem Oil is a very safe insecticide and fungicide. It is orangic and affective, so be sure to apply before pests take over your plants.

Just a little knowledge in these key areas will turn you into a green thumb and your success will be based in knowledge and not just luck or chance! VOLUME VIII, ISSUE 7 2017 SHADOW CREEK RANCH VOLUME VIII, ISSUE 5 2017 SHADOW CREEK RANCH

PEAR-SCAPE TRAIL If you've driven around Pearland lately, you may have noticed some large painted pears around town. The project, called Pear-Scape Trail, features 4-foot fiberglass pears painted by local artists. "It was initiated by the Pearland Convention & Visitors Bureau to promote tourist activity in Pearland," Pearland Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director Kim Sinistore said. The Pear-Scape Trail features 20 pears. They have all been placed around Pearland with one at King's Biergarten, the Pearland Town Center, Pearland Animal Hospital along with several other businesses and parks. See the full list of locations below. The city hopes the pears will help enhance the arts and natural environment within Pearland. This July, discover the power of play and adventure. For children and adults, play is a vital part of our mental wellbeing, physical health and personal interactions. During Parks and Recreation Month, National Recreation and Park Association is challenging everyone to get their play on with their local parks and recreation. Whether it’s summer camp, an adult sports league, exploring a trail, Zumba class, meeting friends on the playground, playing cards in the park, or discovering nature — parks and play go hand in hand. Visit www.pearlandtx.gov/departments/parks-recreation for more information about Pearland Parks and Recreation.

CITY NEWS: TALK, TEXT, CRASH

As the number of distracted driving crashes increase statewide, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is urging drivers to stay focused while on the road with its “Talk, Text, Crash” campaign. An estimated 1 in 5 traffic crashes in Texas is caused by distracted driving and the problem is getting worse. “People are dying on Texas roadways because drivers are diverting their attention from the road to talk on a phone, send a text, post to social media or engage in some other distracting behavior. When drivers take their focus off the road, they put themselves, their passengers and others at risk. It’s just not worth it,” said TxDOT Executive Director James Bass. Distracted driving crashes in Texas went up by 3 percent last year, with 108,962 cases around the state. Those crashes killed 452 people and seriously injured another 3,068. Young drivers ages 16 to 34 make up the majority the crashes. In Texas, 38 percent of drivers say they regularly or sometimes use a cell phone while driving. Texting messaging is particularly dangerous as reaction times double when drivers read or send text messages. While mobile phone use is the most recognizable driving distraction, other high-risk activities that can take your eyes or mind off the road include adjusting a music player, grooming, eating or programming a navigation system. The “Talk, Text, Crash” campaign reminds drivers to: • Put away the phone–or turn it off–before getting behind the wheel • Pull over to a safe location if you must talk or text • Use an app that will block texts and calls while driving • Tell friends, family and colleagues you won’t respond to calls or texts when driving • Always give driving your full attention Visit www.txdot.gov for more information about the campaign or to view more safety tips.
