Gardening By the Moon TWO STEP THOSE PESKY FIRE ANTS! TW Submitted by

Dr. Robert E. Moon April, 2017

In April, the common areas in the HOA were treated for fire ants. So the ants do not move and take up res-idence in your yard, now would be a good time for you to join with the landscape maintenance contractor and your neighbors to use the Texas Two Step Method for fire ant control. By everyone treating at the same time, the fire ant population will be reduced. in your neighborhood and you will not have to cohabitate with these pests. Now let’s talk about the Texas Two Step Method. No, I am not referring to the dance. I do not recommend dancing or stomping on any fire ant bed. The ants always win! But if you use the Texas Two-Step method of control, you will no longer need to watch every step as you walk and work in your yard and garden and it will prevent mounds around your foundation where ants can enter your home. Fire ants start to become active in the spring when temperatures warm to 65 degrees and during periods of heavy rain to protect their beds. Once temperatures warm, ants start building beds, foraging for food and producing young. Purchase your control materials now so you can Texas Two Step with the Ants.

Texas Two Step Method for fire ant control - First step, apply a product containing a food source and an insecticide. Spread the bait over the entire yard and the ant workers will carry the bait back to the mounds. Second step, treat individual mounds that remain active. Be sure to turn off irrigation system and avoid rainy weather during application. For additional information and product recommendations, refer to the information given by the Texas A & M Cooperative Extension Service at this link: http://agrilifecdn.tamu.edu/coastalbend/files/2011/10/ TexTwoStepFireAntControl_3.pdf

Gardening By the Moon ANNUAL FLOWERING BLISS FROM PERENNIALS Submitted by

Dr. Robert E. Moon May, 2017

If you are looking to add beauty and interest to your landscape that will provide you years of color, you should consider planting perennials that will come back and flower year after year.

May Night Salvia

Salvia Greggii

One of my favorite perennials in my yard is May Night Salvia. This is a very dependable plant that can tolerate heat and extreme cold weather. The deep purple spike flowers will bloom from early spring until fall. They go dormant in the winter so when they turn brown, cut the plant back and watch them charge back in early spring. This plant thrives in full sun. I suggest you plant quarts (6-inch pots), 18 inches apart for the best results.

Salvia greggii is another great summer flowering plant that loves the heat and sun. It can be purchased in red, pink, purple or white flowers and this plant will bloom from May through October. It goes dormant in early winter so cut back to 12 to 18”. Plant quarts (6-inch pots), 18 inches apart for the best results.

Turk’s Cap Another plant I really like is Turk’s Cap. This plant is a heat lover and a very dependable flowering plant. You can choose red or pink flowering Turk’s Cap. They can grow in full sun or partial shade and flower from May through October. These plants should also be cut back in the fall when they turn brown. Plant quarts (6-inch pots), 18 inches apart for the best results.

I forgot to mention the best quality of all these perennials. They are drought tolerant!! And once established, they have few to no insects and diseases. These are tried and proven plants so go for one or all three!

Spring Ideas in the Landscape 1.

Now is a great time to finish trimming back and pruning any perennials or ornamental grasses. Another good practice is to fertilize your perennials, especially after pruning them back, with a good slow release fertilizer like osmocote or a 14-14-14 that is time released fertilizer for plants.

2.

Tree trimming can also be done right now as far as lifting the canopy and thinning out the inside of the tree to promote healthy upright growth and improve the overall shape. If your trees are very large, contact a local licensed and bonded tree service.

3.

The spring varieties of annual flowering color are starting to become available, so now would be a great time to start planning for your next flower change out. Adding organic compost to your flowering annual beds before planting will greatly increase the overall health of the flowers. It helps reduce fungus and disease and also helps the plant to grow strong roots. Follow the planting of your annuals with a liquid fertilizer for flowering annuals and a slow release granular fertilizer so they will be continuously fed to promote growth and lots of flowers. A very light application of mulch on your flower beds will also help hold moisture in the beds.

4.

If you have an irrigation system, now is a great time to have it inspected and checked for leaks and proper coverage before the heat wave of Texas returns. If you call a local company, make sure they are a licensed and certified irrigation company.

5.

To finish off the new flowers and spring cleanup, an application of mulch is a great way to make your beds look clean and beautify the overall look of your beds and trees. Just remember that you do not want too much mulch at the base of the plants or on the trunk of your trees. Keep your mulch on your tree rings low around the base of the trunk and in beds try not to put a heavy layer of mulch up against the base of the plant.

Adjust Your Thermostat Cut your cooling and heating costs by using a programmable thermostat, or simply adjust your thermostat during overnight hours or when no one is home. Try setting the thermostat at 78 degrees or warmer in the summer and at 68 degrees or cooler in the winter to reduce energy consumption. When used properly, a programmable thermostat with four temperature settings can save the average household up to $150 per year in energy costs. If all Texas households reduced their energy consumption by using a programmable thermostat, Texans could collectively save over $1.3 billion annually while keeping the air clean. Annual Savings: $150

TxDOT FM 521 Improvements: PURPOSE:

This notice advises the public that a final environmental assessment (EA) is available for public review and TxDOT has issued a finding of no significant impact (FONSI) for the proposed FM 521 Roadway Improvement project from Beltway 8 to FM 2234 in Fort Bend and Harris counties, Texas.

DESCRIPTION:

The proposed project consists of reconstructing and widening the existing two-lane rural undivided roadway to a four-lane divided roadway from Beltway 8 to 0.3 mile south of FM 2234. The project also includes improvements on FM 2234 from 0.3 mile west of FM 521 to 0.2 mile east of FM 521. •

Approximately 13.2 acres of additional right of way would be required

This project was initially evaluated with a state environmental assessment and a public hearing was conducted; however, based on the recent inclusion of federal funding, this document has been prepared in accordance with the procedural provisions of the National Environmental Policy Act. No design modifications have occurred since the previous public hearing held on May 7, 2015.

This includes a total of 1.67 acres out of 45.75 acres of Almeda Road Nature Preserve

This project includes railroad overpasses at the Union Pacific Railroad crossings on FM 2234 and FM 521 in the nature preserve/park boundary

To avoid noise impacts that may result from future development adjacent to a proposed highway project, a traffic noise analysis is included in the final EA, which includes predicted noise impact contours for currently undeveloped areas. These impact contours are intended as a general guide to assist local planning officials and developers plan and construct new activities in locations that would not result in traffic noise impacts. On the date of approval/clearance of an EA/FONSI (including the traffic noise analysis) for a proposed highway project, TxDOT is no longer responsible for providing noise abatement for new development. The environmental review, consultation and other actions required by applicable federal environmental laws for this project are being, or have been, carried out by TxDOT pursuant to 23 U.S.C. 327 and a Memorandum of Understanding dated Dec. 16, 2014, and executed by FHWA and TxDOT.
