NATIONAL NIGHT OUT Tuesday, October 3, SCR residents turned on their lights, locked their doors, and enjoyed block parties with their neighbors for National Night Out. Some activities included bike parades, sidewalk chalk art, trivia games, and more. A special thanks to our Pearland Police officers who came out to visit, show kids their patrol cars, and talk about neighborhood safety.

The assistance of residents is necessary in order to improve the quality of data that is being captured by both the City and TCEQ. Many residents are posting the air quality events on Facebook or other social media outlets. Residents should report their issue directly to TCEQ/the City of Pearland. All smells should be reported to the City of Pearland at 281.652.1900. The City is responding to these requests and making customer contact 24/7. Once City staff responds to the complaint, they will drive the area and attempt to document the boundaries of the odor event.

All resident complaints must be registered with TCEQ/City of Pearland by an individual, detailing the specific concern in order for the complaints to be effectively handled. If there is an odor, provide an intensity ranking from 1 to 5 (1 being minimal and 5 being extreme). By tracking this information, we can begin to establish a more exact map of the affected areas for each event.

WHAT IS SEAPEARCH? SeaPerch is an engaging underwater robotics program supported by the United States Navy and the Association of Unmanned Vehicle International Foundation. This after school activity gives scholars the opportunity to build a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) and complete underwater challenges designed to simulate real world scenarios, while incorporating STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) concepts. SeaPerch is an innovative underwater robotics program that equips teachers and students with the resources they need to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) in an inschool or out-of-school setting. Students build the ROV from a kit comprised of low-cost, easily accessible parts, following a curriculum that teaches basic engineering and science concepts with a marine engineering theme. The SeaPerch Program provides students with the opportunity to learn about robotics, engineering, science, and mathematics (STEM) while building an underwater ROV as part of a science and engineering technology curriculum. Halloween Safety Tips Everything you need to know to keep your kids safe on Halloween.
Everyone loves a good scare on Halloween, but not when it comes to child safety. There are several easy and effective behaviors that parents can share with kids to help reduce their risk of injury.
Walk Safely
Drive Extra Safely on Halloween
• Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.
• Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.
• Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross.
• Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs.
• Put electronic devices down and keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street. • Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them. • Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible. Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings.
• Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully. • Eliminate any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings. • Drive slowly, anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic and turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances. • Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so be especially alert for kids during those hours.
• Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.
Trick or Treat With an Adult • Children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, remind them to stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-ortreat in groups.
Keep Costumes Both Creative and Safe • Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors. • Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision. • Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.

LEMONADE STAND On Sunday, September 17th, 2017 a group of kids and their families from SCR held a lemonade stand at the Emerald Bay Rec Center as a fundraiser to benefit Yellow Up, Inc., an organization that helps childhood cancer warriors and their families with various needs, as well as, spotlight childhood cancer awareness. The Houston Humane Society also received a donation from this event to help with their ongoing Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. Various types of lemonade, Indian lassi, and snacks were available for a donation, and activities for kids were on hand as well. The event was a huge success thanks to the very generous neighbors in SCR. The total for the event and online donations reached nearly $900!

TABULI SALAD RECIPE INGREDIENTS: Âź cup fine bulgur wheat or 1/3 cup bourghul or cracked wheat (put with some water and microwave for 1 min or until soften, dry the water.) 2 large tomatoes, finely chopped
1/4 cup lemon juice 4 cups chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves 1 cup chopped fresh mint leaves 4 green onions, thinly sliced 1/4 cup olive oil
DIRECTION: Mix all the vegetable and the bur, add the oil the lemon juice and the salt, taste and adjust.

CHICKEN SHAWARMA RECIPE INGREDIENTS: 1/4 cup olive oil, plus more for oiling the grill grates 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon sweet paprika 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice 1/4 teaspoon chili powder 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon 4 cloves garlic, smashed
2 lemons, zested and juiced Kosher salt 6 skin-on, boneless chicken thighs ½ teaspoon Red pepper paste ½ teaspoon Tomato paste 2 tablespoons Vinegar 3 tablespoons yogurt
FOR THE GARLIC SAUCE: 6 tablespoons low fat mayo 4 cloves garlic, smashed Some salt and lemon juice 3 tablespoons of yogurt. FOR THE SANDWICH: Pita bread Onion Pickle Fried potato Tomato
DIRECTION: For the shawarma: Whisk together the oil, cumin, paprika, turmeric, allspice, chili powder, cinnamon, garlic, lemon zest and juice and 2 teaspoons salt and everything else in a container until combined. Add the chicken, cover and marinate, refrigerated, for 12 to 14 hours. Heat 1 tbsp. of oil in a skillet on the stovetop over high heat. Pour half of the chicken into the skillet and sauté for 3-4 minutes till the smallest pieces of chicken turn brown, put in medium to low to make sure it is cooked well, about 7 min, set aside. To the bread, add some garlic sauce the shawarma, fries, tomato onion and pickle, roll it and put it on the oiled panini press.

Talking Trash Garbage cans and trash cans should be stored out of view...either in your garage or behind your fence. Commercial Vehicles, Trailers and Boats ...OH MY! We are noticing more and more of these vehicles parked all over SCR! The RULE IS they are not allowed to be parked in your driveways or on the streets in SCR. Please... either put them in your garage or remove them. Your neighbors will thank you! Special Pick Up For large items (i.e. stoves, refrigerators, etc...Call City of Pearland for a SPECIAL PICKUP: 281.652.1603. When cleaning up your yard and cutting back tree limbs and putting it curb side for pick up... remember the trash company will only pick up 10 bags! Holiday Decorations Our Governing Documents specify that 30 days after the holiday observance, it is required to remove holiday decorations. Please comply with the community rules by January 31.
