When Bentwater resident Wendy Paynter joined The Woodlands Arts Council (TWAC) as Development Director in 2014, she renewed her passion for the arts while fundraising for their community and education outreach programs.

TWAC produces the annual Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival, ranked among the best in the nation.

The Festival is set for April 8, 9 and 10 in Town Green Park located at 2099 Lake Robbins Drive and along the Waterway. The 2016 festival theme is “Escape to a Weekend of Art & Music on the Waterway!” About 225 artists out of more than 1,100 applicants were chosen from around the world by a jury to participate and will offer a mix of painting, sculpture, photography, jewelry, and textiles for purchase or commission.

MD Anderson Cancer Center is sponsoring First Look Friday, offering a great option for leisure shopping. The first attendees on Friday will receive a three piece postcard set by the Festival’s featured artist, Julia Gilmore. An Art Dash Party, sure to be a fun night in The Woodlands according to Wendy, will be held on April 8 at The Marriott. Party-goers can also purchase an Art Dash ticket which allows them 60 seconds to make a mad dash to choose their favorite piece of art. This will be a night to view some of the Festival artwork, mingle with the artists and cheer on the “dashers” while enjoying appetizers and drinks.

Live music and performance art is always a large part of the Festival experience. Featured on three stages will be superb music of all kinds (a Latin focus on Friday), a selection of craft beer and wines, food from our finest restaurateurs, and an array of interactive happenings for the kids.

VIP Tickets, which allow entrance to the Terrace VIP Club presented by Glade Gallery, are new this year and are $75. Proceeds from the festival support the Council’s year-round art enrichment programs to local schools, senior’s organizations and special needs groups in The Woodlands and surrounding areas. For example, they partnered with The Montgomery County Juvenile Justice Center whose students created a mixed-art mural with a Master Artist that is now hanging in the chambers of a juvenile court judge. The Council works with eight local schools and funds field trips to museums and performances or arranges for groups to visit the schools.

Another successful venture of TWAC has been The Art Bench Project. Artists from around the world compete to be selected to create a useable bench for our community. There are currently 14 art benches located on The Woodlands Waterway from the Mall Water Basin to Town Green Park.

Bentwater Antiques Club

The Woodlands Arts Council is growing and encourages all to support their artful work with a donation, by volunteering or by partnering with the Council. For more information, visit www.woodlandswaterwayartscouncil.org.

Bentwater Antiques Club recently held a meeting in the home of the club president, Barbara Crystal. The theme of the meeting was antique and vintage silver. Several of the members presented heirloom pieces and detailed the provenance of the items.

The Bentwater Antiques Club has a lot in store for 2016. The members plan to investigate clocks as well as quilts and vintage linens in the coming months. Additionally, in the fall a Bentwater Antiques Roadshow event is in the works.

Bentwater City Limits Our amazing Bentwater City Limits singers did it again! This year the group entertained the largest audiences to date and raised record breaking funds for the American Cancer Society.

These talented musicians and singers are all from Bentwater and perform under the direction of our very own Keith Ann Gearn.

The dazzling vocalists put on three dynamic shows to entertain residents and their guests.

Their voices inspired others to show off their talents – we didn’t know we had so many great dancers among us!

The Bentwater Ladies Organization kicked up their boot heels for a great Western Day Event at a recent meeting. The ladies from Sandi Jefferson's Sports Club Line Dancing group started the social time off by showing us their honky tonk dancing skills.

Many of the BLO members dressed to impress in their best Western wear with sparkling boots, shimmering hats, dangling tassels and glittering bling. The speaker for the event was Brian Edwards, the City of Montgomery Fire Department Chief.

Bentwater Resident Spider Mohle Joins FAITH To Raise Money For Local Cancer Fund.

Bentwater Resident Spider Mohle partnered with FAITH “Fighting Cancer” of Montgomery County to present a $10,650 check to Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital for The Woodlands Hospital Cancer Fund. Mohle, a 2015 Project Champion, chose Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital Cancer Fund as the recipient because of his personal and family medical experiences and excellent care provided by the hospital.

Project Champions included three prominent Montgomery County citizens who volunteered to represent the beneficiaries of the event. Mohle helped raise funds through personal requests, corporate and individual donations as well as silent and live auctions at the annual fundraiser in September 2015.

FAITH “Fighting Cancer” is a Montgomery County based organization, 501(c)(3) that operates through the efforts of volunteers. Many of the volunteers have personal experiences with cancer and they understand how cancer impacts the entire family.

FAITH is staffed only with volunteers. All funds raised by FAITH stay in Montgomery County.

FAITH “Fighting Cancer” accomplishes its goals through generous donations from businesses, individuals and dedicated fundraising volunteers, such as Mohle. Since 2010, the non-profit organization has raised more than $100,000 in donations.

Summers thought about what she could do to support the troops while they were so far away from home. Street Repairs and Maintenance Hays Utilities has been contracted to complete various paving repairs along Bentwood Drive and Bentwater Drive. Other areas may be identified at a later date. The paving contractor for Hays also provides paving/inlet repairs for MUD18 in Bentwater and other communities.

FM 1097 Traffic Signal The traffic signal loop detectors and phasing has been corrected

by TXDOT. Bleyl and Associates has been working with their signal maintenance department to correct the long phases, which resulted from the asphalt overlay of the entrance and replacement of the loop detectors for the signals.

For the last three years a very small group of us have been building a book titled Raising A Hand that is now in print. It is a coffee table book of music photography with all the proceeds helping fund a cure for Rett syndrome.

Below is a draft charter for the group – Grandmothers Unite for Rett – which we hope to launch this month. This may be a crazy idea, but so was the creation of the book! Our hope of this group of Rett and Non-Rett grandmothers is to form a coalition of women (and men) from across the country to help bring awareness and sales for the book, Raising A Hand.

Many of you know Rett syndrome is a disorder that killed my friend Kevin Black's daughter Cortney at the age of 16. Rumor has it that the book is pretty good and a bargain at twice the price! It is only $35 and is available at www.RaisingAHand.com.

All the proceeds from this book are going to Rett research and as most know a cure is likely close, within our lifetime. The only requirement to join is to obtain at least one copy of the book and read it from front to back before agreeing to be in the group.

Our goal is to sell 1,000 copies or more in every state. Many have looked at me funny when I make that statement and say something like, “Sure, Dave?” I think we can, if we join forces and say “it's possible!”

Some of the objectives of the group might be:

Grandmothers and grandfathers, we need your help now!

• Raise awareness about the book and Rett syndrome.

• Encourage entertainers in the book to take additional steps to promote the book.

• Sell copies of the book (directly or indirectly).

• Recruit others to sell copies of the book.

• Interface with local media outlets in their home city/state and the city/state of their grandchild, if different.

• Help Dave and Kevin set up meaningful events within their state(s) to come and perhaps talk to large groups of women and men, hold house concerts and promote the book.

• Talk with college sororities about selling the book.

• Other ideas will be forthcoming.

We have sold at least one book in 40 states and six counties so far.

Bentwater residents often send us photos and stories of amazing visions of nature. Dennis Hough shared these photos of a “frequent flyer” to his home. The Red Shoulder Hawk visits often, usually to partake of Purple Martins. This time he was perched on the Purple Martin pole and was ignoring any humans.

He suddenly burst off the pole and went into full attack mode. One part of a second he is perched on the pole, the rest of the second he is in “full throttle ahead” mode and then put the brakes on.

On the ground he took his time digging out a cricket and ignoring the camera.

We are glad Dennis didn’t ignore the hawk and decided to share his photos with Bentwater Life!

"My office is honored to be the first agency in Texas to have this type of canine unit in service," Gable said.

"When I took office in 2012, I brought this type of law enforcement to this county, and now there are multiple agencies with ICAC investigators and they are all doing great work to protect our children."

Warmer weather is here and for those who enjoy getting out for a bike ride, here are a few safety tips to protect yourself and your loved ones from a bicycle accident.

Hays has someone in Bentwater every day, seven days a week.

They can and will respond 24 hours a day. Their general office hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

1. Perform a pre-ride safety inspection of your bike before you head out for a ride.

MUD 18’s regularly scheduled monthly meetings are on the 2nd Tuesdays at 2:30 p.m. in the Country Club Board Room. Meetings are open to the public. The agenda is posted on the MUD # 18 website and on the message board in the breezeway entrance to the Country Club Grill near the Golf Pro Shop.

2. Wear a bicycle helmet and brightly colored clothing during daylight hours and reflective garments at night.

4. Watch out for any kind of road hazards such as pot holes, broken glass, puddles of water and dogs. All of these can be hazardous and can cause an accident.

5. Obey all stop signs, traffic lights and road markings.

Always go in the direction of traffic.

6. Before making a turn, look on both sides and behind you for cars, and then signal before making the turn. Watch for left or right turning traffic.

7. Bicycles ridden at night should have a light on the front and a red rear reflector or red flashing rear safety light.

8. When stopped at an intersection where there are cars, don’t try to pass a motorist and get ahead of the car.

Even if you are an experienced cyclist, it is a good idea to review the above safety tips periodically. You may want to review them with younger cyclists in your family.

POA Board Meeting Policy

The Bentwater POA Board of Trustees recently adopted a Board Meeting Policy to create a reliable process for members to be able to speak to the Board before meetings, as well as to inform members about how notice of meetings will be provided and how meetings will be conducted.

The Board of Trustees has the utmost interest in serving the Bentwater POA and this policy has been adopted in an effort to ensure that Board meetings are conducted in an efficient and effective manner and in consideration of the members’ and trustees’ valuable time.

The policy is as follows: I. Notice of Board Meetings The members shall be notified of regular or special Board meetings in the following manner: 1. The notice shall contain the date, hour, place and general subject of the regular or special Board meeting, including a general description of any matter to be brought up for deliberation in executive session; 2. The notice shall be posted at least 72 hours before the start of the meeting by posting the notice at one or both of the following locations:

a. At a location reasonably designed to provide notice to the members of the Association; or

b. On any internet website maintained by the Association.

3. The notice will also be emailed to each member who has registered their email address with the Association. Members are responsible for keeping an updated email address with the Association.

II. Members’ Time Prior to Board Meeting The notice of regular of special Board meetings will include time set aside by the Board, prior to the Board meeting, for input from members (“Members’ Time”) as follows: 1. Notice.

Cunningham is an Associate Clinical Professor at Texas Woman’s University – Houston Campus. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a MS in Public Health – Nursing, Maternal Child Health. She is certified in Inpatient Obstetric Nursing.

She was one of the first advanced Fetal Monitor Instructors and Instructor Trainer in Neonatal Resuscitation. She has received numerous awards throughout her career, including the Nursing Innovation Award at Houston Methodist

III. Conduct of Board Meetings Meetings of the Board shall be conducted as follows: 1. After a Board meeting is called to order, there shall be no audio or video recording of the proceedings, either by a Board member, a member in the audience, or a member addressing the Board pursuant to a place on the agenda.

Henry "Hank" Odenweller, 79, passed away on February 13, 2016, from complications related to a stroke he suffered on January 21, 2016.

Hank was born on August 3, 1936 in New York City to Herman and Elsa Odenweller. He is survived by his beautiful and loving wife of 56 years, Wendy Crane Odenweller, daughter Christine Ann Hausmann and her husband Pete, son Kenneth James Odenweller and wife Vicki, and son Keith Herman Odenweller and wife Misty, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Hank attended Huntington High School where he was a captain of the football team and voted MVP. He was president of his class. Hank attended and graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1958. Hank played football at RPI and was a member of Chi Phi fraternity.

Joey Ponto

He met Wendy in Huntington, New York at his fraternity Christmas party in 1957. They married in April 1959 in Germany while Hank was stationed in Boblingen, Germany with the U.S. Army.

He later started his career with Shell Oil Company. He retired in 1993 after 32 years. Hank and Wendy shortly, thereafter, moved to Bentwater.

Hank treasured and loved his family and boasted proudly about how well his family turned out. He was also known for his kind and gentle heart and always had a smile for everyone. He was a founding member of the Men of Bentwater (MOB) and was the organization's first President. He was jokingly referred to as the "God Father" of the MOB. Hank’s family asked that we include this message from them, thanking their extended Bentwater family: We want to express our thanks and appreciation to all the friends and Bentwater neighbors for all of the food, calls, cards, and flowers during this difficult time. We want to thank all who attended Hank’s visitation and celebration of life service. The family deeply appreciates all that was done for us.

On December 27, 2015, Bentwater lost a treasure.

"Ms. Joey" Jo Ann Ponto, age 67, died from injuries sustained in a multi vehicle accident. Ponto was born on August 19, 1948, the second of 10 children, in Toledo, Ohio.

Joey thoroughly enjoyed golf, which she learned to play at age 28 so she could play with her father. She won numerous tournaments, including the 2015 Houston City Championship in her division. Joey graduated from Chatsworth High in 1966 and attended Riverside Community College. She married Robert Ponto in 2000 and had a successful career in telecommunication sales.

She was very involved with her Christian faith hosting several events centered on promoting the self-esteem of young girls. In

2009, she and Bob moved to Bentwater and settled into retirement with the Bentwater Golf Community.

In Bentwater she created "Ms. Joey Pops-In," dressing like Mary Poppins, offering nanny services with themed days for children.

She also took care of senior citizens. All proceeds went to "Camp be an Angel" serving children with disabilities.

Joey was always very giving. Her "golf posse" and neighbors recall her flamingo antics and the times she would show up at golf tournaments dressed as Santa Claus.

Joey is survived by her husband Robert (Bob), mother Mary Waggoner, her two sons, Thadeus and Aaron (Heidi) and two grandsons, Ethan and Aidan. She endeared herself to Bob's two sons Robert and Michael, three granddaughters and two grandsons whom they all affectionately called "Ms. Joey." She is survived by six sisters, Carolyn, Mary, Laurie, Jan, Patti, and JoDean; two brothers, Glenn and John, and 25 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Glenn, and brother, Jim. Joey Ponto will truly be missed by all who knew her.

Severe Thunderstorms A thunderstorm is considered severe if it produces hail at least one inch in diameter or has wind gusts of at least 58 miles per hour.

Every thunderstorm produces lightning, which kills more people some years than tornadoes or hurricanes. Heavy rain from thunderstorms can cause flash flooding. High winds can damage homes and blow down trees and utility poles, causing widespread power outages.

If you hear thunder or see lightning, head inside immediately!

Heavy rainfall from thunderstorms can quickly cause rivers and streams to overrun their banks and cause street flooding in cities.

Remember, if you encounter a flooded roadway, do NOT drive or walk into it.

Why Worry About Thunderstorms?

Every year people are killed or seriously injured because they didn't hear or ignored severe thunderstorms warnings. The information in this section, combined with timely watches and warnings about severe weather, could save your life.

• Listen to local news or NOAA Weather Radio for emergency updates.

Watch for signs of a storm, like darkening skies, lightning flashes, or increasing wind.

• If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be in danger from lightning. If thunder roars, go indoors! Don't wait for rain. Lightning can strike out of a clear blue sky. Learn more about lightning safety.

• Avoid electrical equipment and corded telephones. Cordless phones, cell phones and other wireless handheld devices are safe to use.

• Keep away from windows.

• If you are driving, try to safely exit the roadway and park. Stay in the vehicle and turn on the emergency flashers until the heavy rain ends.

• If you are outside and cannot reach a safe building, avoid high ground; water; tall, isolated trees; and metal objects such as fences or bleachers. Picnic shelters, dugouts and sheds are NOT safe.
