QUESTION:

My partner with whom I lived has died after a long illness and he did not have a Will. He has two adult children. I have been told that I am not entitled to anything from his Estate although I lived in his house and looked after him. Do I have to move out so the property can be sold? Am I entitled to anything? What can I do?

ANSWER:

Paul Cowdery, Partner and Head of Litigation, replies: This is not an uncommon situation. It raises several complex areas of law on which you should seek legal advice. The main ones are, firstly, the Intestacy Rules (which apply when someone dies without leaving a Will) and, secondly, the rights an individual has to claim that the effect of the Intestacy Rules (or if there was a Will, the terms of the Will) is such that reasonable financial provision has not been made for them out of the deceased’s Estate.

An unmarried partner (often called a common law husband or wife) has no right to inherit under the Intestacy Rules.

However, all is not lost as under the Inheritance Act (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975, adjustments can be made by the Court to the distribution which would otherwise take effect under the Intestacy Rules in certain circumstances. It seems you are likely to have been living with your partner in the same household for at least two years before his death so assuming you were unmarried and not in a civil partnership, you are likely to be eligible to make a claim under the Act. The question then is what your claim may be. That is a complex issue and will have to take into account many factors. However, this may enable you to achieve an outcome where you can continue to live in your Partner’s home, for example.

As I have said, you need to see a Solicitor as soon as possible. There is a six month time limit to bring claims under the Inheritance Act calculated from the date on which a Grant of Letters of Administration (a Grant of Probate where this is a Will) is taken out. If you are uncertain as to whether this has been done your Solicitor will be able to help.

Harrow Way Over 55’s Social Club Hello again to all our members and thank you all for your continued support, the festive season now long forgotten we now turn our thoughts to the Easter Season, another joyful time with religious overtones for those who are so inclined, plenty of family fun, lots of Easter Eggs and presents and stuff, with the necessary financial outlay, never mind, enjoy.

I was pleased to note that the Probus Club enjoyed their session with Mel Rees, we too also had a side splitting performance on what was his twelfth visit to our Club a very professional and wonderful man. Mel is a hard act to follow, but Maureen always finds good quality speakers and entertainers to meet with our needs for which we are all grateful, on the second of March, Bryn Strudwick is dropping in for “Just A Little Chat” and on the 16th March Richard Tanner is coming along to tell us all about ‘North Waltham’.

The big event is on the 30th March, the date of our Annual General Meeting, anyone who feels they have the necessary skills to function as a proactive member on the committee should seek nomination and come along and join us.

The children have been busy colouring in their competition entries. The winners will be presented with a gift, and we will let you know the names next month.

The garden area has been refurbished and the children have been exploring the new outside play apparatus as well as planting bulbs.

February seems to have been a busy month for the children, they enjoyed making salt dough hearts and decorating them for Valentine’s day; as well as participating in a cooking session making jam tarts. The children were very enthusiastic about eating noodles for snack and celebrating Chinese New Year.

Two by Two Parent Toddler Group Welcomes all parent/carers, a wide range of craft activities are available during the session, as well as song times.

If you and your little one(s) would like to join in the fun, then why not come along to our friendly parent toddler group.

We meet at Kempshott Village Hall every Wednesday during term time from 9:45-11:30. Each session includes a variety of craft activities, age appropriate toys, a snack, and song or story time. There is no need to book, just turn up! We look forward to welcoming you soon.

They have also been celebrating some seasonal festivals – which have all come at once this year! They made and enjoyed pancakes for pancake day, they made some lucky money wallets and pictures for Chinese New Year, and created some beautiful Valentine’s Day cards for their Mummies and Daddies.

The theme after half term will be spring, and the children will be learning about spring flowers and Easter, and there are some very exciting activities lined up for this special time of year. The children will be doing sponge painting, a bit of still-life chalk drawing, making cherry tree blossom and also some animal-themed crafts including a pop-up rabbit, welly-boot fox and finger mice, and making some special surprises for Mothers’ Day. Preschool closed for the Easter break on Thursday 24th March and the summer term begins on Monday 11th April.

My wife bought me an Kindle a lovely little tablet A constant book and companion and my place I would never forget I’d take it up it upstairs with me so’s I could read in bed at night Because words help to settle and comfort before I turn out the light I’d read it when I had breakfast or when I had nothing to do I’ve even been known to take it with me when I went to the loo Finishing one book of a series I thought to order it’s brother But it didn’t download right to my kindle so I ordered up another So now I am left with nothing to read at exercise while treading on my mill I got no sense from the suppliers and now someone I wanted to kill Doing everything it said in the manual two pages is not quite a book Then I found I’d lost it in my archives and in anger my fists at them I shook With steam coming out of my earholes I was now seeing nothing but red The technician at the other end of my email wrote, I’d rather speak to your wife instead Deleting his email angrily I grabbed up the phone to dial Being put through to a young lady who calmed me, after a little while Taking me softly through scenarios asking me to follow her lead Assuring me this was the only way to get to the desire I need I could feel she knew what she was doing when told to just sit tight ‘Now hold the slide across for forty seconds’ and I knew it was coming out right First a flicker and slowly a page and my screen was no longer a blank I was bubbling inside she had done it and this young lady I wanted to thank There were no words to describe my feeling, in that moment of my time Until I remembered the poets, so I thought I’d like to thank her in rhyme So ‘May’.You have made an old man very happy With calming words and soothing voice you settled this angry old chappie I’ll finish now with a great smile and a great big thank you to say the very least To a lovely calm young lady ‘Who soothed this savage beast’.

Make hard water a thing of the past Although most of us put up with hard water in Basingstoke, many do not realise that you can do something about it.

Limescale furs up our heating systems, causing breakdowns, makes it more expensive to heat our homes and damages our appliances.

The other problem with limescale is the constant cleaning of showerheads, shower screens, stainless steel sinks. It can also aggravate skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis.

Kempshott Infant School

There was a delicious smell wafting around school on the 9th of February! Sizzling could be heard in all the Year groups as each child made, topped and then ate pancakes! Year R had also enjoyed tasting Chinese food the day before as they found out all about Chinese New Year and celebrated the beginning of the Year of the Monkey.

They also had great fun performing a dragon dance, not as easy as it looks!

Year 1 shared their learning with their parents in an assembly all about their topic, Dinosaurs and All That Rubbish.

They performed songs, poems and raps and shared lots of fascinating dinosaur facts. It was a lovely way to celebrate all that they have learned this term.

Year 2 had a fantastic visit to Tesco at Chineham. They found fruits in every colour of the rainbow and then made fruit kebabs. They explored the loading bays and storage areas and even went inside the huge freezer! Shopping will never be the same again!

Year R ended their People Who Help Us topic with some very special visitors. A crew of Firefighters brought their fire engine to school! The children sat in the engine and had a good look at all of the equipment, including the ladders and hoses. It was really interesting to look at each other through the thermal imaging camera, you just can’t hide from it! Some children also dressed up in Firefighter’s protective clothing which was very heavy. They learned about keeping safe and decided to ask their parents to check their smoke alarms when they got home!

Kempshott Junior School

Wow! The spring term is certainly flying by and certainly doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon. Daffodils are out for us to enjoy on our walk to school and we are all making time to admire the beauty of nature.

As you can see from the photo, Year Three pupils are well on their way to being ‘brave bug experts’ after enjoying a visit from Animal Encounters. During this visit pupils had the opportunity to handle giant African snails, leopard geckos, stick insects and much more.

Year 4 have produced interesting information texts on natural disasters and are preparing for a visit to The Gilbert White Centre…whatever the weather!

During the Year 5 visit to Southampton Art Gallery pupils produced excellent lino prints inspired by Art Nouveau. All pupils enjoyed the day and learnt a great deal from a curator, during a tour, on the art pieces and what is considered when putting an exhibition together.

Pupils in Year Six have been learning about staying healthy with a particular focus on the heart and lungs...and will offer advice should they see their parent/carer do anything that may cause potential damage!

This is the 40th year in which this celebration of the best of British Beers will take place at the Maltings in Farnham 21-23 April.There are many accompanying events and it sounds like a fun three days. Check it out on their website www.farnhamlions.org.uk Fundraising: Our Christmas tin collections raised £2440. This funded our Christmas giving to worthwhile organisations such as the Women’s Refuge, May Place, Joshua Tree and the Basingstoke Voluntary Association. All support the homeless, elderly or others in distressful situations.

Welfare: Welfare: Our Welfare chairman, Derick Lacey, thanked the club members for the flowers and cards sent to him and Maureen on the occasion of their 60th Wedding Anniversary. He also reported that we spent £540 on worthwhile causes in addition to the Christmas donations.

13 KEMPSHOTT NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICING Hello again, Further to last months article, we have had more burglaries in Kempshott recently. Another address in Homesteads Road has been hit, not far from the previous one.

This is most likely connected to the previous burglary in the same road and probably carried out by the same people, so can I ask all residents, but particularly those in Homesteads Road and the surrounding area, to be extra vigilant for the time being.

These offences are being committed in the afternoon or early evening, not overnight, so please be alert to suspicious people around these times.

If you recall seeing something suspicious lately but forgot to pass on the information to us, please call 101 and ask to speak to either myself or someone at Basingstoke CID. Please take whatever steps you can to protect your house and possessions by securing doors and windows.

You may wish to consider fitting extra crime prevention devices readily available from DIY stores or get a burglar alarm, but you should ALWAYS keep the sidegate to your house padlocked.

Spare car keys should be kept in a secure place out of sight wherever possible, and any expensive items, including jewellery, should be photographed and logged on the ‘immobilise’ website for free using their serial numbers..

Kempshott is still a very safe place to live or work, but there seems to be a group of burglars out and about in our area at present that we would dearly love to catch in the act.

Have your say on what the borough’s future housing priorities should be to help shape a four-year strategy for housing and homelessness.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is asking everyone including residents, businesses, local organisations and housing providers to contribute to the strategy that aims to ensure local people have access to a range of affordable housing with options to buy and rent in the future.

The government is committed to increasing the amount of housing for affordable home ownership and the borough council is preparing for these changes through its draft 2016 to 2020 housing and homelessness strategy.

The strategy identifies the need to increase the amount of affordable housing for rent and ownership in the borough, ensure residents know about and have access to future affordable home ownership opportunities improve the approach to meeting the needs of homeless people and taking preventative action where possible.

The council is now keen to hear views on the revised strategy and to understand people’s priorities, needs and aspirations for housing in the borough.

Cabinet Member for Housing and Regeneration Cllr Terri Reid said:“As new homes come into the borough it is important they are being built to meet the needs, finances and aspirations of our residents.

“We continue to demonstrate our commitment to those who are vulnerably housed or need to find low cost rent options. But we also want to hear from the many residents who want to access low cost homeownership, starter homes or shared ownership. We want to hear from you and we want to know what we can do to help you find the homes you want.”

The draft 2016 to 2020 housing and homelessness strategy consultation runs from Thursday 11 February until Thursday 24 March 2016.

We were delighted to welcome back to our January meeting most of our existing members as well as being joined by a number of new ladies many of whom joined straight away.

In recent years our January meeting has on a number of occasions fallen victim to bad weather, however this year the sun made a brief but welcome appearance. Lets hope we are as fortunate in February. Our speaker Jill Daniels entertained the members with her “Through the keyhole” talk and an enjoyable afternoon was had by all.

The speakers for the rest of the year are now booked with a variety of topics for all interests. Our February speaker was Mr Alan Grace who talked about his time with ENSA.We are hoping to arrange a theatre trip later in the year and there are skittles evenings and quizzes already planned. Once the weather improves our walking group is looking forward to striding out and if that is to strenuous we hold monthly craft afternoons which can range from knit and natter or board game sessions to craft demonstrations allowing members to learn new skills.

We welcome new members so if you would like to meet us and become part of our afternoon group we meet between 2.30 and 4.30pm on the 4th Monday in the month at Kempshott village hall.

OWEN’S STORY Part 2, continued from last month’ September 1939 In September 1939 War was declared. Mud, dad and I were sat with our next door neighbours, Mr and Mrs Clatworthy, and listened to Neville Chamberlain, the Prime Minister, declare that we were at War with Germany. Both mum and Mrs Clatworthy shed tears. Life changed as all the street lights went out and all windows were covered with heavy curtains or blinds so that no light could be seen from enemy aircraft flying overhead. The few cars that were on the road had cowls fitted over their headlights to reduce the glare seen from enemy aircraft flying overhead. The “Phoney War” from the declaration of war to May/June 1940, being no active land action.

December 1939 In December 1939 there was a big sea battle between three British Cruisers, Ajax, Achilles and Exeter, and the German Heavy Cruiser, Admiral Graf Spee, which because known as the “Battle of the River Plate”. The Admiral Graf Spee took shelter in Montevideo Harbour, Uruguay, and was only allowed a limited time of stay to put ashore its dead and wounded.

My Aunt Milly (Mum’s Sister) and Uncle David were staying with us for the weekend. Uncle David was a bit of an expert picking up shortwave broadcasts on our wireless and he tuned in to an American radio commentator, Mike Fowler, describing the scene on 17th December, as the Admiral Graf Spee put out to sea but was scuttled in Montevideo Harbour rather than facing the British Cruisers. Her commanding officer, Hans Langsdorff, was convinced by false reports circulated

by British Intelligence that he would be facing superior British forces, and consequently decided to scuttle his ship. Three days later he shot himself.

Dunkirk The “Phoney War” ended when Germany invaded the three neutral countries Belgium Holland and Luxembourg and smashed through into France ending up with the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force in May/June from Dunkirk and Calais.

My aunt (Edie) belonged to a Mother’s Group in one of the Basingstoke Churches and she and her colleagues along with my mother helped feed the soldiers at Basingstoke Railway Station, who were being evacuated from France. She came home very distressed at the state they were in, as the soldiers were wounded, wet through, some with no uniforms, just wrapped in blankets.

Battle of Britain over Basingstoke Only two bombs were dropped on Kempshott which fell on the field between Pack Lane and the Railway line. No damage done. Today it is still possible to see the remains of the craters in the Battledown fields when they have been freshly ploughed. On 16th August, 1940, from my front garden in Buckskin Lane we watched the bombing of Church Square in Basingstoke.

While at school, on the 24th October 1940, bombs were dropped in Cliddesden Road, roughly 500 yards from Fairfields School, making a near direct hit on St.Vincent’s private school. When we heard the explosion we all dived under our desks, as there had not been any air raid warning. Sadly two people were killed and several were injured, but the pupils were in the Memorial Park playing so they escaped injury.

One Sunday afternoon, no date, my mother, father and I were walking down Victoria Street on the way home from my Grandmothers’. When I looked up and said to my father “That’s a Junker 88 up there”, to which he replied “Don’t be so damned silly”. I then replied “Dad look, he’s just dropped his bombs”. I was well on the way to a thick ear from my father, but the bombs exploded before he could react. They fell either side of the Railway at Basing, near the site of the Hampshire Clinic, where it is today.

As the Grammar school did not have classes on a Wednesday afternoon (instead we had to go on Saturday morning), my mother and I went to the cinema in Basingstoke, an air raid warning came up on the cinema screen saying “Leave if you wish to”. I insisted we stayed until the end of the programme, which we did. Just as we came out of the cinema we heard the sound of machine guns being fired. When we got home to Buckskin Lane there were numerous policemen and ARP wardens there as Buckskin Lane had been machine gunned. One of the semi-detached bungalows had a hole in the apex of its roof and a fir tree at “Bellavista” in Pack Lane had been lacerated. Luckily there were no personal injuries.

Our Air Raid Shelter We had a home built air raid shelter at the bottom of our garden which we shared with the Clatworthy’s at 160, ourselves at 158 and the Soper’s at 156. It was roughly 3 metres square, 2 metres deep and accommodated 6 adults (sometimes more) and 3 children. It had battery powered light and oil stove to heat water to make tea, with a pot for the toilet.

Many nights were spent in this shelter when the Blitz of Coventry and the Midlands took place, as there was a danger that enemy aircraft would jettison their bombs, if being chased by our night fighters or damaged by anti-aircraft guns.

and Conservation News for March Kempshott Conservation Group A Pioneer Conservationist…………...

Some of us have been worried about the decline of the countryside for a long time, longer than one realises. One key personality in the development of the modern conservation movement was Charles Rothschild (1877-1923). Born into the banking family, he was also an entomologist who did pioneering work on fleas and whose contribution in that area is still recognised today.

He was one of the first to realise that we would need a network of protected areas for wildlife to save them from the ravages of development. He purchased Wicken Fen in Cambridgeshire in 1899 and, in 1901, gave it to the fledgling National Trust, which had only been established in 1895. He also purchased another site in Cambridgeshire, Woodwalton Fen, in 1910, which became this country's first National Nature Reserve in 1954.

Apart from actively saving threatened sites by dint of purchasing them, he was also instrumental in identifying key sites and habitats that were "worthy of preservation" across the British Isles. He set up the Society for the Promotion of Nature Reserves (SPNR) in 1912. This organisation eventually became the Wildlife Trusts we know today. The SPNR's first job was to survey and document those sites worthy of protection. This eventually became the so-called "Rothschild List", which comprised a total of 284 sites. The surveyors were left to develop their own criteria of what constituted a site worthy of preservation. Their emphasis tended to be on plants and insects. But we know that is a good basis, as both plants and insects form the bottom of the food chain.

Surprisingly, for such a large county, Hampshire had only five sites, with an additional four on the Isle of Wight. We are lucky to have two of these sites on our doorstep. The SPNR survey identified "Hook Common", which now includes Bartley Heath and "Odiham Marsh", which is now known as Greywell Moors. Both are managed by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust (HIWWLT).

Charles Rothschild's concern was to preserve these sites for future generations. Despite the work of the various wildlife trusts around the country, we continue to see the destruction and fragmentation of habitats and the subsequent loss of species. We are loosing those sedentary species that do not move around much, where the fragmentation of habitat results in a shrinking gene pool, leading to local extinction, or in extreme cases, loss of the species altogether. While there have been a few successes, Otters, Red Kites, even the Horrid Ground-weaver Spider, the overall trend is downwards. Incidentally, the world population of the Horrid Ground-weaver Spider (Nothophantes horridus) was restricted to just three sites in and around Plymouth. A concerted campaign run by Bug Life has saved this species from extinction, plus they have discovered a fourth site on an industrial estate.

24 Top score for Mayor’s charity quiz It was fingers on the buzzers as 25 local teams battled it out at the Mayor’s Charity Quiz 2016.

More than £1000 was raised for Basingstoke and Deane's Mayor Cllr Anne Court’s charity appeal, which benefits Inspero, Basingstoke Multicultural Forum and Ark Cancer Centre Charity.

Held at BCoT, and organised by Basingstoke accountants and business advisors RSM UK, the winning team was The Write Stuff, led by Mark Jones of Ark Cancer Centre Charity, who received a trophy and £30 prize.

The Best Team Name prize went to The Special Mental Endowments, who won a box of liqueur chocolates; and the team who finished last, Loddon Valley Lions B, received wooden spoons.

Mayor Cllr Anne Court said: “We had a wonderful evening, full of laughter and team spirit. I would like to thank RSM UK and BCoT for their efforts and all the teams who took part for supporting my charities. It was a great success.”

Julie Gary, community life champion at Asda, Brighton Hill, and Ark Cancer Centre Charity supporter, helped with the raffle.The Mayor paid a special tribute to her for “always being there when you need her”, and thanked her for her hard work.

26 Probus Hears About Code Breaking Sister At Bletchley Park

John Lidstone has enjoyed a varied and eventful life in business and public service being an internationally recognised broadcaster, public speaker and author of 16 best-selling books on business management. He gave a presentation to the members of the Probus Club of Basingstoke about the Bletchley Park code breaking centre and the secret part played by his elder sister Pamela stationed there.

Until fairly recently, Bletchley Park, or ‘Station X’, has probably been Britain’s best kept secret. This is because all the activities carried on there during World War Two were of vital importance to our national security and ultimate victory. It is estimated that because of their work that the war was shortened by two years and saved 80,000 lives. It was purchased in 1938 for the Government Code and Cypher School and MI6 in the event of hostilities. Its mission was to crack the Nazi codes and ciphers. The most famous of the cipher systems to be broken at Bletchley Park was the Enigma.

Few outside Bletchley knew of its mission, and even fewer, inside or outside, understood the breadth of that mission and the extent of its success. All staff signed the Official Secrets Act and a 1942 security warning emphasised the importance of discretion even within Bletchley itself as people in each working hut were not allowed to discuss their work with people in other huts. Any subsequent breach could have led to 30 years imprisonment or the death penalty.

Debutantes and other high born women, considered capable of being able to keep a secret, were initially recruited for administrative and clerical jobs.Then intelligence became the criterion. Personal networking sought out suitable recruits from Oxford and Cambridge universities as it was recognised that formally trained mathematicians were needed if the enemy’s electromechanical cipher machines, particularly Enigma, were to be cracked. Alan Turing and Gordon Welchman from Cambridge worked alongside other cryptanalysts including a chess champion.

John’s sister Pamela was one such recruit, having graduated from Reading University with a First Class Honours Degree.

She was called up for National Service and attended the selection procedure for the Foreign Office part of which was a timed completion of the Daily Telegraph crossword. Most addicts took eleven minutes: Pamela completed the crossword in seven. She was consequently discreetly approached about a particular type of work as a contribution to the war effort.

The first operational break into Enigma came in January 1940. Secrecy shrouded the fact that Enigma had been broken and to hide this information, the reports were given the appearance of coming from an MI6 spy with a network of imaginary agents inside Germany.

Winston Churchill called Bletchley Park his “goose that laid the golden egg and never cackled”. The “golden egg” was nothing less than the ability to decode the secrets of the German war machine. Station X, as it was known, was so efficient it could read coded messages from German generals on the battlefield before they were even seen by Hitler in Berlin.

At the end of the war, Churchill ordered that all records of the place be destroyed and the embargo on Bletchley’s secret work remained until 1976. John only learned of Pamela’s part at her death at 95. She, like many others, never told her family about her work. They thought she had worked for the Foreign Office throughout the war.

29 BASINGSTOKE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

The Society has been busy over the past three months making the most of the Festive Season.

In November we held the AGM followed by a “Cheese and Wine” party. It was reported that we had just over 50 paying members, good for present day Clubs but well down from 30 years ago when the numbers were approaching a hundred.

In December we continued the festival theme with our Christmas buffet party with a splendid spread of food and wine, followed by exchange of Cards and drawing tickets for the Christmas presents. We also had a Speaker, Chris Perkins who talked before the buffet on his long stint in the RAF, and his special involvement in the RAF Mountain Rescue Service.

Chris was born and brought up in Birmingham, and showed us slides of a very different city from that of today. In his early ‘teens he used to walk, cycle, travel by bus and train or hitch-hike widely, going as far as N Wales and sleeping overnight in barns and sheds.

At eighteen he joined the RAF and stationed in N Wales he ultimately stayed on beyond National Service and became a helicopter winch-man. During WW2 the navigational aids were crude compared to present day, and it was quite frequent for incoming planes from the States, with inexperienced crew, to get lost and some unfortunately crashed into the Pennines and in Scotland, sometimes being a long-time before they were found.

As a result of this in 1942 a determined young man called George Graham originated the RAF Mountain Rescue and Medical Team. Initially equipment was primitive but he developed techniques to suit mountain conditions e.g. stretchers usable on steep inclines.

In 1948 a series of rescue stations were set up permanently, and there ensued developments in communications, weatherproofed clothing, light-weight high-strength ropes, light-weight water proofed boots and so on. Although the number of stations have since been reduced the RAF Mountain Rescue Service still operates from Llandwrog, using New Era Helicopters, satellite phones and rescue dogs.

In January our first Speaker for the year was Derek Leary and his talk was back to the horticultural theme being entitled “Heavenly Hebes”. Hebes is the Greek goddess of Youth, and the plants were initially linked with Veronicas, however, it was noted that whereas Hebes seed-heads split horizontally, Veronica’s split vertically and so are a different species.

Derek gave an almost encyclopaedic survey with individual slides of a large range of Hebes, 98% of which originated in New Zealand. Commencing with Sapphire which grows some 54 inches high and 40 inches across this is a very hard, easy to root plant, which un-surprisingly has vibrant blue flowers. He followed this with Rappaensis which has white flowers and is slightly less hardy. Albicals Pewter Dome is another white flowered Hebe originating in Canada.

Alicia Amhurst is suitable for growing in a flower pot, as is Hebe Rosie which is a tiny one. Eliptica flops on to the ground and so is suitable for growing in a hanging basket. Potted plants should be taken out every 3 years, reduced in size and have the compost replaced.

Some Hebes are grown for their foliage H. Speciosa Tricolor has variegated leaves and H. Dazzler has pink/green/yellow foliage but very little flower.

The HEBE Society, (there is only one in the world), meets once a year but issues a magazine “Hebe News” four times annually. Members of the Society do a lot of swapping of cuttings. Ventnor Gardens on the Isle of Wight have a New Zealand Garden and its Curator is a Member of the Hebe Society. Also Bicton College E Budleigh in Devon has a National Collection of Hebe’s in its New Zealand Garden.

30 HAMPSHIRE CRIMESTOPPERS I regularly report on scams that have occurred in Hampshire which are very often committed against the elderly or more vulnerable members of our community. Sadly I have another trick to warn you about after Police received a report of a phone scam offering the sale of lottery tickets. The con was particularly nasty as it went on for almost a year and cost the elderly victim some £15,000.

In March 2015, an elderly man in his 90s was called by someone he did not know and persuaded to buy 75 Irish lottery tickets. The victim was advised that a good win was common and he was sure to make a fortune. When the victim agreed, he was asked for his bank debit card details to ensure the tickets could be bought on his behalf. He was told evidence of the tickets’ purchase would be sent to him through the post.

Just a few days later he was contacted again and this time asked if he would be interested in other lotteries in Europe and Australia.

The victim said he might be and he was told that some tickets would be purchased for him in the lotteries in Italy and Australia.

Over the subsequent months a total of nine further purchases were made, mostly without the victim’s agreement, and certainly without him understanding what was really happening. The victim finally contacted his bank when he realised that he wasn’t winning any prizes and thought that was odd. He then discovered that money had been taken without his consent and an investigation has now revealed that more than £15,000 was taken from his account.

This matter has been referred to the national Action Fraud team and although there haven’t been many other similar offences reported locally, it is very likely that there have been other victims who either haven’t yet realised they have been targeted and scammed, or simply would rather not report it as they feel they are in some way to blame. However it is important that you should contact the Police on 101 if you have been harassed by someone trying to sell you lottery tickets over the phone.

Remember, never give out any personal information about your bank account to anybody over the phone and never give your PIN number out in any form (including typing in to a keypad). If you have given out information which could compromise your bank account security in any way, call your bank to cancel your cards as soon as possible – please don’t be embarrassed to speak up straight away!

Sometimes brazen fraudsters will still try to get your bank details by claiming to be Police Officers investigating their own crime!

If someone calls claiming to be a Police Officer, ask for their identification number and police force. Hang up the call and advise that you will call them back using the 101 number.A genuine police officer will not mind waiting while you check. Call them back from a different phone if possible or wait at least 10 minutes before making the call, to ensure they have not kept the line open.

Never hand over money to someone at the door to be sent off elsewhere. If someone comes to your door claiming to be a police officer or staff member, always ask for identification and make a note of their identification number. Ask them to wait while you verify their identity. Close the door and call 101. Dial 999 if it is an emergency.

32 News from Cranbourne – Spring Term 2016 As you read this we will be coming to the end of another very busy term at Cranbourne.

Certificate Presentation Evening – Class of 2015 Before Christmas it was a great pleasure to welcome back the Class of 2015 for their Certificate Presentation Evening.

It was lovely to hear how they are getting on in the next stage of their lives and we all enjoyed hearing Steven Edney, exstudent and now Co-owner and Director of Expression for Growth, talk about the “Two most important days of your life and how everyone has a talent”. I am sure that Steven’s story will give hope to many and his message of working hard to achieve success is a very true one. Special thanks must also be given to Alfie Love who entertained us with his guitar playing!

Student Council Cluster Conference – Fundamental Values On Thursday 28th January 2016, 100 students from eight infant and junior schools linked to CBEC took part in the College’s annual Student Council Cluster Conference. This year the theme was Fundamental Values and the objectives of the day were to: Consider the most important values in our school communities and establish a vision for the cluster.

Understand how these values are important in our wider communities.

The day started with representatives from each school giving a short presentation. The ages ranged from 4 to 16 years and everyone who presented was fantastic. Each school had come along well prepared for the day, bringing with them displays, collages and one even performed a song! Throughout the day the students took part in a variety of workshops which explored the fundamental values through Art, Story Telling, Dance and Music. The day was a huge success and we received some great feedback: ‘Music was a brilliant way of reflecting on values’ – Manor Field Junior School ‘A great day enjoyed by all, thank you’ – Manor Field Junior School ‘Very welcoming and well planned, helpful supporters’ – Chalk Ridge Primary School It was particularly pleasing for me to hear the very positive comments about the CBEC students which included ‘helpful, polite, caring’. There is no doubt that young people thrive on being given responsibility and the members of our Student Voice worked tirelessly throughout the day to ensure that our visitors were happy and well looked after.

CBEC’s Debating Club Following on from our local success in the Basingstoke Schools’ Debating Competition we decided to enter a team into the National Schools’ Debating Competition and on Thursday 3rd December 2015 CBEC hosted the first round (ESU School’s Mace). We had one motion to debate: “The House will force The BBC to implement diversity quotas for casts of all of their shows.” Sasha Taylor (Year 10) and Ian Hislop (Year 11) did a phenomenal job of opposing the argument, impressing the judge from Oxford University. We were a little surprised to be against some of Bradfield College’s Sixth Formers, but the team (Ellie Dragoon, Megan Buchanan, Anna Higgins, Lauren Russell - Year 10) held fast and the hours of preparation paid off as we made it through to the next round. The Head Judge commented on the amount of hard work that the team had put into researching the topic as well as their ability to think on their feet and come up with some truly stellar responses to Bradfield’s propositions.

The next round of the competition was held at Eton – so with great excitement and some trepidation our team headed to Eton College on the evening of Thursday 28th January 2016. It turned out to be an incredible evening. The students spoke confidently to staff and students from Eton and received some very complimentary feedback from the organiser of the National Competition. She said that she could not believe how young the students were and to do so well, at such a young age was amazing; particularly when all the other competitors were sixth formers! She also commented on their passion and dedication and said that, despite our team sadly not getting through to the next round, she would like to invited them to the regional finals so that they could liaise with other schools. She claims we are ‘definitely a school to watch’! The Debate Co-ordination from Eton were so impressed with our students’ attitude and dedication that they would like to invite us to work with their Debate team. Quite an accolade! So watch this space: ‘Cranbourne Business and Enterprise College developing links with Eton College!’

We are so pleased with the team’s achievements. They have shown real commitment and spent hours of relentless researching. The students were a real credit to the College. All schools involved commented on how polite, friendly and committed our students were and we are very proud of their efforts.

CBEC Debating Club began in 2014 when we first took part in the local Basingstoke Schools’ Debating Competition. We

were ecstatic to win the first year and the team did the school proud again in 2015, where we placed second, handing the trophy to Aldworth School. Miss Phin and Miss Morgan meet with the team once a week to debate current issues within society and anything that interests us.

As a result of being part of the competition the team were invited to visit Ascot to listen to Charles Crawford, from the Home Office, deliver a fascinating talk about how to write and deliver a speech. I think we would all agree that public speaking is a life skill and we are delighted to be able to offer this opportunity at CBEC. We are proud of the transition process that is in place at CBEC to ensure students move from Year 6 to Year 7 as smoothly as possible. Whilst this is an exciting time we are aware that it can also be a ‘big step’ and at CBEC we endeavour to make sure that students feel comfortable in their new environment. The process starts with visits to all our new students in their primary school.

When Technology Lets You Down

I’ve work in the IT sector for over 25 years now and if there’s one thing that frustrates me it’s when technology just doesn’t work as it should. Now I’m not talking about when technology that fails, because things do go wrong and things break. I’m talking about the stupid things that just make you want to throw the device across the room.

This frustration comes out of a technology purchase I made for my new television.

My previous TV had a wired surround sound system but when I got the new TV I thought “let’s look at wireless speakers”. My previous experience was always a bit hit and miss until I got a Logitech boom box which is a wireless radio and music player. This is a constant companion during my working day as it provides pleasant background noise to break the silence.

With this in mind I investigated wireless systems. Sonos led the way in wireless music system for many years and moved into the surround sound market but as I purchased a Samsung SmartTV it made sense to purchase a system from Samsung as this would leverage the Samsung Link system.

I also bought a few speakers for around the house so we could stream the same source to the Kitchen, Bedroom, Lounge, etc. All was great. The sound worked well. When I got the right audio setup, the surround from the TV was really good.

It utilised the 5GHz Wifi I installed which is much less crowded and more reliable than normal WiFi. However, as is always, it’s the small things that can really bug you.

Part of my setup was to group the Bedroom and Kitchen speakers. I had set an alarm on the system that goes off at 7:15 Monday to Friday to wake us up to Radio 2. This means when I go downstairs to make the morning cuppa I maintain the continuity of the broadcast. It works well…until it doesn’t – at which point it can get very frustrating.

The system is all controlled via an App which I have installed on both my smartphone and tablet. It drives me nuts when I load the App up and it can takes up to 30 seconds to find all the speakers. The system has also developed a habit of just stopping. I’m not sure if it’s the internet, my WiFi or the BBC website. Either way it’s just a radio to me. It should not be this difficult. When I try to switch the system off when leaving the house, I sometimes have to wait until the App decides to show me that status of the particular device so I can just turn it off. It also, on occasion, says that music is playing when it’s not. All a bit poor.

I’m not singling out Samsung here because so many modern App and systems have the same frustrations. Facebook, for instance, has stopped giving me the option to share articles on my N2N page. I have to share with myself first and then share with my page. And this is progress.

One of my bugbears with these issues is the complete lack of feedback from any of the systems.There are no log files or any other identifiers to give me the opportunity to diagnose the issue. Many new apps pop up a screen that says “Error” with an “OK” button to clear. Thanks for that.

Microsoft is also employing this ideology in Windows 10. The complete lack of any “advanced” settings or features is being eroded away. I can remember having options to fine tune certain elements but the modern systems think they can take care of it.

The Apple iPhone also frustrates me when I have to configure email on it. Now certain “known” systems work very well.

Hotmail, for instance, is easy to setup because Apple “knows” how to set this mainstream provider. It also works when you used a hosted system from Microsoft because Microsoft’s hosted solution provides an “auto discover” feature. But when you have to setup email for a company email server Apple tries to find it for me. I absolutely know it won’t be able to find it but Apple insists on making me wait 30 seconds while it goes off on its pointless search.There’s no “manual configuration” option until this fruitless search is complete!

There’s one modern aspect of Smartphones that I despise; non-removable batteries! Every mobile phone and Smartphone I owned had a removable battery until a few ago. It was great.When the battery started to exhibit the side effects of battery memory I could purchase a new battery and swap it out. I could also carry round a spare charged battery and swap it over if the other one ran out. But no more. Apparently a non-serviceable battery is progress. I do understand why they do this. It’s so they can have odd shape batteries to fit the smaller and smaller spaces inside a smartphone where the thickness, or rather thinness, of the phone is more important. Form over function?

To be honest, there are only minor frustrations in the grand scheme of things but I do question why we still can’t get the simple things right!
