he gardens have certainly picked up during April and the cherry and fruit tree blossoms in the area have been quite prolific. Nevertheless the weather is still a little cool and we hope for a reasonable Bank Holiday. Many of our clubs are meeting again and the Kempshott village hall is running a near normal series of events including Sunday markets. Although it seems to be a little way off, a reminder that the Queens jubilee extended Bank Holiday is Thursday 2nd June to Sunday 5th June 2022. There are already celebrations being planned but if you would like some publicity please let us know. We have seen another increase in advertising this month reflecting a gradual pick up in business in the area. Many are local, please support them if you can. As a reminder we are currently looking for new deliverers for Redwing and some local roads in the Gabriel park estate. If you can help our contact details can be found inside the back page. Following my holiday in Tanzania earlier this year I have been persuaded to share my experiences in this lovely country, its people and its communities. the first in the series is included this month.

Deadline for June edition Monday 16th May

After the usual tea, coffee and biscuits, the Chairman, David Cowling, opened the meeting by welcoming everyone and on behalf of the members congratulated the Secretary and Treasurer, Tony and June Brazier on their upcoming Golden Wedding Anniversary. In thanking everyone Tony asked that people helped themselves to a crème egg and then gave details of the next trips. The speaker this month was Daniel Cowling who is Headteacher at Oak Wood School in Uxbridge where he took up his position in April 2020. He had titled his talk “Getting to Good – A School’s Journey” and went on to explain that when he arrived at the school it was OFSTED rated as 'Requires Improvement'. It is an 11–18 mixed comprehensive Foundation School with at present 1094 pupils, including 84 Sixth Form Students, and nearly 200 staff. He gave an outline of his own journey to becoming a Headteacher and then gave details of the measures being taken to ensure that at the next OFSTED inspection the school would receive a ‘Good' rating. After giving an insight of the problems faced from having a diverse catchment area, with a higher than average number of children having special needs or not having English as their first language, he

explained the challenges that were faced in introducing these measures. After two years progress was being made with better pupil behaviour and attitude, an improved curriculum and a fully committed teaching staff. All of this was being done with the aim of providing the best possible education to the children to equip them with the skills and ambition to succeed in life through the school

motto “We Dream, We Learn, We Grow.” The group’s next outing will be to Hatfield House on Thursday 19th May and then on Thursday 14th June there is a Cruise on the Thames from Runnymede with, lunch included, followed on Thursday 14th July by a visit to Hever Castle. A collection at the meeting raised £206 for the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal The next meeting is on 4th May when the speaker will be Terri Reid with a talk titled “Putting Your Best Foot Forward.” The group meets on the first Wednesday of each month at Brookvale Village Hall from 10 am to 12 noon and all retired Civil Servants, their relatives and friends are welcome. Further details about the group and information about our meetings and trips can be obtained by contacting:csrfbasingstoke@gmail.com.

BASINGSTOKE CITIZENS ADVICE

Accessible, Reliable, and Independent

What is Disability Discrimination

It is against the law to discriminate against disabled people in various areas of their lives. If disability discrimination takes place in any of the following situations, you may be able to take action about it: ● at work ● when providing goods, facilities and services ● when renting or buying property ● in education There are some important areas where it is not against the law to discriminate against disabled people, for example, in access to public transport services. Disability discrimination can either be direct or indirect. Direct discrimination is where you are treated less favourably because of your disability than someone without a disability would be treated in the same circumstances. Here is an example of direct discrimination because of disability: A pub allows a family with a child who has cerebral palsy to drink in their beer garden but not in their family room. The family with the disabled child is not given the same choices that other families have. Indirect discrimination is where there is a rule, policy or practice which seems to apply equally to everyone, but which actually puts disabled people at an unfair disadvantage compared with people who aren't disabled. Here is an example of indirect discrimination: A local authority produces an information leaflet about its services for local people. It does not produce an easy-to-read version of the leaflet in order to save money. This would make it more difficult for someone with a learning disability to access the services and could amount to indirect discrimination. Sometimes, it is possible to justify the rule, policy or practice that puts disabled people at a disadvantage. For example, there could be a health and safety reason, or an unavoidable business reason. Where this is the case, it won't count as discrimination. If you have a problem concerning discrimination or any other matter, please contact us to see how we can help. If you need further information about this, or have a problem, please contact us to see how we can help. | Call us on 0300 3309 064 | Chat online: citizensadvice.org.uk/contact-us | Website: www.basingstokeandtadleycab.org.uk Or search on the National Citizens advice website www.citizensadvice.org.uk

Kempshott Under Fives Preschool

Kempshott Under Fives is part of Hatch Warren Under Fives Preschool. We had a wonderful spring term at Kempshott Under Fives; it’s hard to believe we’re now into our final term! In the lead up to the holidays the children enjoyed lots of Easter activities – filling up plastic eggs and hiding them in the room, treasure hunts, chick racing and an Easter trail to collect coloured ribbons in exchange for a chocolate egg from the Easter bunny!

We have had fun following the children’s interests this term and have learnt all about aeroplanes, we’ve formed a music band and we’ve done some DIY. We’ve also been busy in the garden and have planted carrots, kale, tomatoes and parsley. The children have planted beans and are now doing a beanstalk challenge to see how tall they grow. Our older children had some very exciting news over the Easter holidays – they

4

found out which schools they will be going to in September! It’s always lovely to hear all about the “big” schools and who is going where. So this term is when our “school readiness’ begins. We will begin to introduce lots of activities to prepare our bigger children for school; for example, can the children change into their PE kit by themselves? Can they independently wash their hands and open the food in their lunchbox? We’ll also start focus much more on numbers, health and self-care and communication and language. School readiness is described in the foundation stage as “Children reaching a good level of development in the prime areas and literacy and mathematics”. Some of the expected characteristics that should be displayed by a child to show school readiness; ● Independent in toileting ● Able to dress themselves ● Understands expected levels of behaviour ● Confidence and self-esteem ● Can take turns and share ● Can sit still for a short period ● Can separate from parents/carers ● Communication and language skills needed to communicate needs and listen to others ● Can actively learn and creatively and critically think Some of these characteristics may of course be difficult for all children to achieve and this shouldn’t leave parents or practitioners concerned that a child isn’t

school ready. Don’t forget, you can see regular updates and photos from Kempshott Under Fives on our Facebook page “Kempshott Under Fives”. We are now enrolling for September 2022. We have a wonderful and experienced team, and a lovely setting at St Mark’s Church, Kempshott. If you’d like to learn more about Kempshott Under Fives, or you’d like to pop in for a look around, please contact Melissa Keane, Preschool Manager, on 07951 660401, or at kempu5@ aol.co.uk. www.hatchwarrenunderfives.co.uk.

Our primary concern is for the safety of our customer and colleagues who use the car park at almost all hours of the day.

PLANNING FOR THE WORSE CASE SCENARIO We often like to think of ourselves as invincible. A lot of the time we are. I am constantly amazed by what business owners manage to achieve whilst also balancing the never-ending challenges of running a business. Sadly, sometimes life events can bring a halt to our best laid plans. I recently helped a family friend through a very difficult situation which I wanted to share so that you can ensure you have the relevant plans in place for you, your business and your family. Background My family friend was happily married with three children. Her husband was a one third shareholder in a professional service company. He was in his early 40s and was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Very sadly, he died six months later. I became involved, after his death, and it was clear that little planning (which was not that unsurprising given his age) had been put in place. This left his wife and children in a difficult situation. There was no life insurance in place, and by the time he received his diagnosis, it was too late to get any insurance in place. There was also no provision in any of the company’s constitutional documents as to what happened with the shares. As a result, my contact was left with a large mortgage to pay, three children to support and minimal income as she, at the time, was retraining. Given that most business owners are growing their business ultimately for their family’s benefit, I wanted to set out some of the points which you may want to consider. 1. Set out a clear process in the articles of association or shareholders’ agreement as to what will happen on the death of a shareholder. 2. Consider whether a cross option agreement may be suitable for your business model. 3. Ensure you have adequate life assurance in place for you and your spouse/ civil partner 4. Make sure you have a Will in place and that it is up to date 5. Consider having a lasting power of attorney for both financial and health matters. 6. Consider what the effect on your business would be if you were unable to work for a prolonged period or were to die. I highly recommend that you do spend to time to consider these points and discuss them with your fellow shareholders and family. I would be delighted to discuss with you your plans and thoughts for your business because for us business is personal. Why Did Equity Release Get a Bad Name?

Equity Release got off to a bumpy start in the 90s, mostly due to a lack of regulation and a few highly publicised bad cases. The original ‘Home Reversion’ plans also allowed lenders to buy part or all of the customer’s home at far below market price. But a lot has changed since then and the industry has worked hard to rebuild trust. Equity Release is now heavily regulated, with the Financial Conduct Authority and the Equity Release Council putting safeguards in place to protect borrowers. The newer product called a ‘Lifetime Mortgage’ is a fair, flexible and trusted way to access money tied up in your home to live a more comfortable lifestyle in retirement. You can release up to 60% of the equity in your home without having to worry about monthly repayments – unless you wish to pay off the interest as you go to protect your remaining equity. You still own your home and can live in it until you die, move into permanent care or decide to sell. At Michael Usher Equity Release, all the products we recommend come with a ‘no negative equity guarantee’, meaning no matter how long you live for your estate will never owe more than your home is worth. So in short, the industry is now customer-focused. Lower interest rates, more flexibility, and greater regulation have made Equity Release an increasingly attractive option for older homeowners. Whether you’re looking to supplement your retirement income; fund holidays, hobbies, or home improvements; or help loved ones get on the property ladder, a Lifetime Mortgage could change your life for the better. Found on Winchester Street in Basingstoke, Michael Usher Equity Release is your trusted, local advisory firm – in fact, we’re rated Excellent on Trustpilot! Chat to one of our friendly advisors for FREE and we’ll happily answer your questions and see what deals are available to you. Call us on 01256 637000 or visit us at www.muequityrelease.co.uk.

and Conservation NewsNEWS for FOR MayMAY AND CONSERVATION A new study published in the Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society suggests leaf variations on a single tree are the combined result of animals browsing on them and the trees' swift molecular response to that sort of environmental pressure. Holly is a value to wildlife as it provides dense cover and good nesting opportunities for birds, while its deep, dry leaf litter may be used by hedgehogs and small mammals for hibernation. The flowers provide nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinating insects. The leaves are eaten by caterpillars of the holly blue butterfly, along with those of various moths, including the yellow-barred brindle, double-striped pug and the holly tortrix. The smooth leaves found at the tops of holly trees are a winter source of food for deer. The berries are a vital food for birds in winter, and small mammals, such as wood mice and dormice. Did you know that the mistle thrush is known for vigorously guarding the berries of holly in winter to prevent other birds from eating them? They give me the creeps We know that spiders are not everybody’s favourite invertebrate but they have their uses in the garden. Spiders are arthropods, which means “jointed leg”. Arthropods are a huge group of animals that represent two thirds of all complex life and comprise anywhere between 1.5 and 10 million species, depending on who you talk to. Arthropods include the crustacea, myriapoda, insecta and arachnids. The crustacea include crabs, lobsters, shrimps and woodlice, while the myriapoda include millipedes and centipedes. These two groups can have anything from eight to hundreds of legs. Arachnids such as spiders, harvestmen, mites, ticks, scorpions and, bizarrely, horseshoe crabs (don’t ask) have eight legs whereas insects have only six legs. A feature that all arthropods have is a segmented body covered in an exoskeleton. Around the house the only two groups of arachnids likely to be encountered are the spiders and harvestmen. Harvestmen are the ones with (usually) small bodies and very long legs. Both groups are carnivorous and are active all year hunting their prey. The two segments of a harvestman’s body are fused into one and this is the easiest way to tell a harvestman from a spider which has two. Another difference is in the eyes. Harvestmen have only two eyes perched on the top of the body, while spiders generally have eight arranged across the top of the head in two rows of four with the front set pointing forward for hunting.

One aspect of spider behaviour that some people may find concerning is the speed at which they can move. For these people, beware of jumping spiders such as the zebra spider pictured. At only around 6mm long, this spider is small and can be found in the garden in summer. Note the four large forward pointing eyes. There are 36 species of jumping spider in the UK. They have excellent 360 degree vision and can see in colour.

Being predatory, spiders can bite. Most species have only tiny “fangs” incapable of piercing human skin. Those encountered in the UK will only attempt to bite when attacked, The harvestmen’s main defence is to shed leg segments or even whole legs.

JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION

TOP GUN: MAVERICK In ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, Tom Cruise is back on screen to reprise his role as the famous military pilot Maverick from 1986's cinema hit ‘Top Gun’, after more than 30 years. ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is a sequel to the 1986 film ‘Top Gun’, written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie. The sequel portrays Maverick as he enters his fourth decade of service, still working with the US Navy as one of their ace aviators. The embodiment of the perfect military man shows off his skills, adjusting to current technologies of modern aviators flawlessly. The story begins when Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise), a top Navy aviator who has served for almost thirty years, is assigned as an instructor to Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw (Miles Teller). Rooster is Maverick's late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards), commonly known as "Goose”, who died in the first ‘Top Gun’ film. Maverick is forced to confront his own concerns as he confronts the shadow of his past and faces an uncertain future. According to IMDB, it was rumoured that the plot would be focused around drone warfare, but Tom Cruise himself has confirmed in an interview that it would be centred around fighter jets instead. Kelly McGillis, who played Mavericks' love interest in the original film, Charlie, has said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight in 2019 that she was not contacted to reprise her role. Instead, the movie cast Jennifer Connelly to play Penny Benjamin, the man's new love interest who

happens to be a bar owner, a single mother, and the daughter of a former admiral. Other notable casts include Milles Teller as Lt. Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, Jon Hamm as Vice Admiral Cyclone, and Val Kilmer as Admiral Tom "Iceman" Kazansky. Joseph Kosinski, who made his directorial debut in 2010 with Walt Disney Studios' ‘Tron: Legacy’, directed the film. The film grossed over $400 million worldwide and received multiple awards nominations, including an Academy Award for Sound Editing and a Grammy for Daft Punk's score. Claudio Mirada, famed for his work on ‘Life of Pi’ (2012), ‘Oblivion’ (2013), and ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’, has provided magnificent cinematography for ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. Harold Faltermeyer and Hans Zimmer's fantastic music soundtrack will do wonders for the audience, heightening the suspense while viewing the film. Faltermeyer had previously produced music for ‘Top Gun’ in 1986. The film is rated PG-13 because of its intense action sequences and includes harsh language that may be inappropriate for youngsters under the age of 13. However, it would be a fantastic film for individuals aged 17 and up. ‘Top Gun: Maverick was originally’ scheduled to be released on 12th July, 2019, but was postponed due to the pandemic to 19th November 2021. It has since then been postponed once again, with the current release date now having been announced and to be 27th May 2022. Viewers may also watch it through the Paramount+ streaming platform 45 days after its theatrical debut.

‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ picks up on the ending of ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ when dinosaurs escaped captivity and went into the borderless world. Though the plot of the movie is being kept secret only until the production wrapped, the producer of the movie Frank Marshall, along with Patrick Cowley, confidently said in May 2020 that it will not be the final film in the franchise and that it would instead mark "the start of a new era", in which humans have to adjust to dinosaurs being on the mainland. It is the sixth instalment in the ‘Jurassic Park’ franchise and the third film in the ‘Jurassic World’ trilogy. The movie’s production status is currently Post-Production where filming is completed and currently music composition and recordings, as well as sound and visual effects are being added. Some lead actors and actresses return to the franchise, along with other several new names. Chris Pratt is still the main character Owen Grady, a dinosaur researcher employed by Jurassic World, and Bryce Dallas Howard is still Claire Dealings, the park operations manager. Three stars of 1993's Jurassic Park, Laura Dern, Sam Neill, and Jeff Goldblum, would return to the series. It marks the first time all three actors have been on screen together ever since then. The rest of the list are Scott Haze, Dichen Lachman, Steven Spielberg, Colin Trevorrow, Omar Sy, Emily Carmichael, Daniella Pineda, Mamoudou Athie, Campbell Scott, DeWanda Wise, Frank Marshall, Justice Smith, BD Wong, Pat Crowley, Isabella Sermon. ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ is directed by Colin Trevorrow, who wrote the screenplay with writer Emily Carmichael, and was pushed back from its initial release date like many other films. It will now be coming to UK nationwide theatres on June 10th, 2022. But it should certainly be worth the wait.

DAD, HOW DO I?: PRACTICAL "DADVICE" FOR EVERYDAY TASKS AND SUCCESFUL LIVING Author: ROB KENNEY 'Dad, How Do I?: Practical "Dadvice" for Everyday Tasks and Successful Living' is written by Rob Kenney, the man behind the popular YouTube channel 'Dad, How Do I?'. Kenney was the youngest of eight when his father left him. The fourteenyear-old and his seven siblings were left without anyone to teach them basic life skills such as tying a tie, jump-starting a car, unclogging a drain, and using tools correctly, in addition to giving some advice on how to succeed in life. As Kenney became a father of two himself, he decided that he would help people who have to grow up like him and his siblings by providing how-to tips as well as the advice he needed growing up on his YouTube channel. Within the course of only several months, his channel exploded in popularity, gaining around 2.5 million subscribers, with his how-to and inspirational videos getting millions of views. The book 'Dad, How Do I?: Practical "Dadvice" for Everyday Tasks and Successful Living' contains Kenney's stories of overcoming his childhood with the help of his family and a little bit of faith. The book offers not only advice but also inspiration, hope, and 50 practical DIY instructions, 30 of which are unique to the book. Get Creative with Anvil Arts’ Summer Craft Workshops Get creative with Anvil Arts and join the summer craft workshops being held during the day at The Anvil in June and July. On Thursday 9 June there’s a Rag Rug Workshop. The day aims to give a great introduction to rag rugs, using traditional prodder and hook techniques. During the workshop, you will work on a small item which can be turned into a cushion, bag or wall hanging. You’ll cover all the basics including transferring a design, and the different stitches needed, as well as how to complete your project. All tools will be provided for you to use in the workshop, and you will be given a wooden peg prodder to take home. You will need to have good hand dexterity and strength, as there is a lot of twisting, pulling, and scissor movements. On Thursday 30 June, join willow sculptor artist Jacqueline Rolls as she helps you create a Small Honeybee Willow. Your piece of work will create a great statement piece and unusual sculpture for your home or garden. On Tuesday 19 July, join the Willow Birdhouse Workshop and create a teardrop shaped willow birdhouse, with a round or square entrance hole, which is a great introduction to basketry techniques.

Many of the readers know that Anne and I had originally planned to do this trip several years ago but events proved otherwise. Nevertheless, family and friends encouraged me to take the holiday and despite delayed bookings due to Covid restrictions I finally went at the end of February. For me this was not only a holiday but the opportunity to explore customs and beliefs of the Tanzania people.

Tanzania - a hidden gem! Although family had a few concerns regards me taking this trip on my own their fears proved groundless, the people I met made me feel at home and I had a very relaxing holiday. I have been persuaded to write about my experiences and this is the first in a series of six which will appear over the next few months as I share my experiences in this beautiful part of the world. My flight landed late afternoon at Kilimanjaro, a quaint 1960’s style airport which has a quiet charm but lacks many of the facilities associated with the European international hubs and a reliance on paper systems rather than the more modern electronic systems. With close to 300 passengers to be processed the checking and covid tests took about 3 hours, welcome to Africa! At least the weather was pleasant though. My driver who had been waiting for 2 hours ( it’s a way of life there!) , spoke perfect English and the vehicle was to my surprise a very modern 2-year-old Peugeot people carrier complete with wi-fi. Apparently, the vehicles are changed every 4 years and it soon became obvious why. As soon as we left the airport the secondary roads rapidly deteriorated with no street lights, unmarked speed humps and potholes. Every form of conveyance is in use from ancient vans, lorries and handcarts, all overloaded and roadside pollution was visible. Pedestrians and cyclists also share these often-unlit streets and accidents are common place. My first hotel Onsea house, some 30 minutes’ drive, was located in a village outside Arusha in northern Tanzania and was reached by what could only be classed as an unlit track from the main road with potholes big enough to swallow mopeds. The hotel was accessed via steel security gates and despite the lateness of the hour and delays at the airport, food was ready for me. With nothing scheduled for the following day I took the opportunity to explore locally. The hotel was located high above the village with wonderful views of Mt Meru and the peace was only disturbed by occasional barking dogs and the local synagogue calling worshippers to service. Between 40-45% of the population are Christian in Tanzania. Another 35-40% are Muslim and most of the Muslim population live on the coast and on the islands, while some members of the population still

The owners, a Belgium Michelin rated chef s wife also run the restaurant with a staff of local people acted a lot of evening custom. For them their hotel was a heir clientele were treated as friends of the family rather quests. aff who came from local tribes, spoke English as well as some also spoke other languages. I certainly felt a little by their abilities but took the opportunity to learn some ch to their amusement as I attempted to string simple ogether. h I continue my journey with a trip to Arusha and the start ey south to some of the national parks.

Kempshott W.I May 2022 As I write this, once again the weather has taken a turn for the better after the last couple of weeks of snow flurries and overnight frosts. Finally we can believe that Spring is here. Despite Covid figures having risen slightly there has been little evidence of serious illness and our members have been glad to resume our regular monthly meetings. We are seeing a steady increase in both existing members and visitors attending and while we have been able to relax our Covid protocols to a certain extent including the requirement to wear masks,3 we are happy to welcome our ladies who still feel more comfortable doing so. In March we welcomed Steve Herra who gave a very entertaining and informative talk on the history of the Cunard shipping line, from the early days of transporting people to counties such as India to take up employment, to the carrying of the Royal Mail and latterly as a successful of cruise line. Later this month we will welcome an expert to talk to us about the Queens official portraits. Our May meeting will be an early celebration of the Queens Jubilee as well as our annual meeting when we review the past year and elect new members to the.committee. This meeting is unable to accommodate guests but anyone interested in joining us will be most welcome in June. We meet at Kempshott Village Hall on the fourth Monday of the month at 2.30pm, if you would like further information about joining please contact our President Barbara Hutton 01256 460475 or the Secretary by email meekmoi@aol.com

Most of the senior readers will remember times during the 1950s when the only “foreign” animals school children would see were either those lucky enough to visit a zoo or see Tarzan films at the cinema or on small black and white televisions in programmes such as David Attenborough’s Zoo Quest and those of intrepid explorers Armand and Michaela Dennis and under water film makers Hans and Lotte Hass. Today, it is a different situation with both the increase in foreign travel that allow face to face

The speaker cited many reasons for changes in the world’s ecology. Global warming has meant that in the UK plants are flowering a month earlier than they used to. Animals operate by day length which means that orchids now flower before bees have emerged to pollinate them. Increased rainfall brings planned housing developments into question with either dangers of building on traditional flood plains or as is happening close by in the Arun valley existing water extraction may be having an impact on the environment and any new developments need to be neutral in the consumption of water. Spain has severe water shortages and strawberry growers in Andalucía have been illegally tapping water for some time. This has now been regularised by the regional government due Whale Bone Arch in Greenland

10% of the level seen in 1960. Herrings, around Britain, are now said to be in good numbers following a ban from 1977 – 1983. Tins of Tuna now claim that the contents have for some years been caught by lines rather than by nets but even this method attracts criticism from the RSPB as Albatrosses are sometimes themselves caught on these long lines. A success story has been the Tequila fish that was extinct in the wild in Mexico. It has been reintroduced to its native area after being bred in an aquarium at Chester Zoo. Rewilding at the Knepp Estate in West Sussex has seen the return of Nightingales, Turtle Doves and breeding White Storks. And last year at another English site 72 pairs of Common Crane fledged 40 chicks with the result that today there are more in this country than in the 17th Century. Tropical rainforests, known as the lungs of the world, are subject to extensive logging activity. Extensive deforestation of biodiverse forests takes place in parts of the world to grow palm trees for their oil, destroying the habitats of already endangered species like the Orangutan, Cranes in flight

experiences with exotic creatures and locations but also for the considerable amount of television programmes that these days highlight concerns about global warming with its danger to animals, plants and humankind. The speaker, Stephen Thair, himself a member of the Probus Club of Basingstoke, sought to bring his concerns about the way our planet is heading at the latest meeting of this club for retired professional and business managers. The RSPB’s recent Big Garden Birdwatch had over 700,000 participants and spotted 11 million birds. This may sound a lot, and there have been some increases in certain species, but the organisation calculates that in the last 50 years, from 1972, this country has lost over 38 million birds. Having said that, and because they are more house types of birds, you will probably see more species in your back garden than on a walk in the Hampshire countryside.

to a combination of political and commercial pressures. Over the years there has been progress on several fronts. Whaling was a substantial industry, including in Britain where a large fleet was based in Whitby, but these days the International Whaling Commission set catch limits to preserve stocks. In 2020 only Japan and Norway were whaling commercially although four countries conducted aboriginal subsistence hunts. Today whale watching has become a tourist activity. Whale meat at a market in Greenland.

Reductions in many fishing fleets throughout the world have been necessary as several varieties have been fished out and Cod stocks in the Grand Banks off Newfoundland are still only at

pygmy elephant and Sumatran rhino. Civilisation is relentlessly advancing towards them so that today 70% of rain forests have a road within one mile. The UN COP-15 conference about biodiversity was held remotely in October 2021 due to Covid. The follow-on COP-15 part 2 due at the end of August at Kunming in China to review progress and finalise the post 2020 biodiversity framework has been postponed due to Covid. The key aim is to make 30% of the Earth’s land and seas to be protected areas by 2030. Alarmingly none of the twenty goals set by governments at a similar conference in 2010, to be achieved by 2020, have been fully met. The pressure is on us all to do something to bring these targets back on track. Time is running out.

News from Jolly Olly’s Coffee Shop Hooray! Warmer weather! The back garden is open! It’s time for chilling with iced elderflower cordials while you listen to the buzz of bees and watch butterflies float on by! Comic Relief Thanks to all of you who came along in March and bought a slice of red nose cake in aid of Comic Relief. Our industrious knitters added £100 to the total raised. The total donated was just over £160!

Ukraine You are so generous! Thank you for your support in helping us to raise over £560 which has been donated to

The Disasters Emergency Committee to support the people of Ukraine. Special thanks to the Knitting Team, Julie Murray who baked some spectacular cupcakes for us and the anonymous donner who contributed £150 to the cause. A Little Plea from Us to You You may recal that since COVID times, we removed our £5.00 limit on card payments in Jolly Olly’s. Since this time we have seen an enormous increase in this kind of payment in the shop. We appreciate that this service is convenient for our customers and intend to continue offering this method of payment, no matter what the purchase value. However, this is costly for us. We are trying to pass on as little as possible of the increased costs that we are currently seeing in running Jolly Olly’s, in all aspects of the business. Therefore, if you do still carry money (!) and can find the pennies to pay in cash in your purse or wallet, it would be a huge help! Thank you!

A Celebration of English Composers

For Basingstoke Choral Society’s 2022 summer concert on Saturday 25th June at The Anvil, we shall be celebrating some of the best in English choral and orchestral music and, to mark the Platinum Anniversary of Her Majesty the Queen, the programme includes three pieces performed at the Coronation in 1953. The programme includes Zadok the Priest, by naturalised Englishman, George Frideric Handel, and Sir Hubert Parry’s Blest Pair of Sirens and I was glad. The choral repertoire for this concert is completed by Ralph Vaughan-Williams’ Fantasia on the Old 104th, and the first performance of Dover Beach, a setting for chorus and orchestra of the well-known 19th century poem by Matthew Arnold, composed by David Lucas, a longstanding member of the choral society. No programme of English music would be complete without including a work by Sir Edward Elgar. The two orchestral pieces in this concert are his Cello Concerto, and Crown Imperial, composed by Sir William Walton for the coronation of George VI in 1937. The choir’s musical director, David Gibson, will be conducting the concert and the choir will be performing with the New London Sinfonia. Tickets are available from the Anvil Box Office: 01256 844244 or from boxoffice@anvilarts.org.uk

BASINGSTOKE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY The spring is when many gardeners start to think about planting some seeds, once the soil has warmed up, in the hope for good pickings of either flowers, fruit or vegetables later in the year. Most will be selected from one of the well-known UK based seed companies that just love to send you their latest catalogue with new and exciting varieties just released. However, it may come as a surprise to learn that most of these seeds are not of UK origin with China and India amongst the fastest seed producers in the world. This eye-opening fact was just one example from our April talk by Paolo Arigo who heads up “Seeds of Italy” in the UK and distributes Franchi Seeds. Unlike our UK companies Franchi Seeds produce 80% of their own seeds. They are the world's oldest family run seed company, formed in 1793 and has been continued through the years by 7 generations. My wife and I heard Paolo speak at the Hampton Court Flower Show back in 2018 and were impressed by his enthusiasm and

genuineness. It took a while to finally get him to one of our meetings having had to re-arrange dates a few times, but it was well worth the wait. Paolo, a man of many talents as you can see from the picture, joined them 23 years ago having been impressed with their seeds and with their history and reputation in the business. Whilst their prices might be a little higher than others you do get a greater number of seeds and the knowledge that most are “home grown” – in Italy! If you are interested here is a link to their website https://seedsofitaly.com/ Our next meeting will be on Monday 20th June, at 7.30pm in Kempshott Village Hall. Pauline Weeks will be taking about “You, your garden and climate change”, a topic we all need to be aware of so come and join us. For more details or to get in touch please go to our website. www.bhsociety.chessck.co.uk

(CGH) PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP (PPG) NEWS

Dear Local Residents, The PPG are pleased to report that the recent Patient Feedback Workshops proved to be an effective way of gathering your comments and ideas in respect of CGH and their service to patients. The valuable information we now have from the 86+ patients we saw over the two Workshops, is being collated from over 600 post-it notes, and this will be fed back to CGH and Operose. The PPG Newsletter, along with previous copies, can be read on our website, www.cghppg.co.uk. If you would like to receive a regular, digital copy, you can request this by supplying your email address in the box provided. Covid vaccinations : Spring booster vaccinations for those over 75 by 30/6/22, are now being done at Jameson House by appointment only, as are vaccinations for 5-11 year olds. Patients will be notified by their surgery in respect of booking these. Festival Place clinic, next to the Tiger shop, is now open for walk-ins for any vaccine, including 12-15 year olds with an accompanying parent, plus the spring booster for those unable to get to Jameson House. CGH News : Our PPG public meetings highlighted a number of areas of complaint, including access/making contact with the surgery, the actual appointment, call wait times, prescriptions issued/rejected and hospital referrals/feedback. CGH are fully aware of the work required to improve patient services, and acknowledge that the difficulties patients are experiencing cannot continue. A development plan has been prepared in response to the Cross Party Councillor Meeting held in March. The planned improvements include a mystery shopper programme reporting back to management on customer service, full engagement of the PPG, new working patterns to improve call answering at peak periods and reducing call wait times, a clear time window for clinician call back, Dr.iQ fully implemented

and e-consult decommissioned. The time frame for this, and more, is April to December, 2022. A Cancer Project to support patients diagnosed with cancer during and, post treatment, is planned to soon be operational. CGH currently employ 17 GP’S (=to 10 FT), 10 regular locums, 17 nurses (=to 11 FT), 10 healthcare assistants (=to 8 FT), 6 Advanced Nurse Practitioners, 3 phlebotomists, 2 paramedics, and 30 receptionists. (FT = full-time). Recruitment continues and these figures will change. With 42080 patients, CGH received 23000 calls during March, and carried out 16000 appointments. Per week, this equals 3402 telephone appointments, 1535 face to face appointments and 700 online consultations. There has been a 65% increase in call volumes in under 2 years.

THE NEW BEGGARWOOD SURGERY

(PATIENTS PARTICIPATION GROUP) EMAIL : BEGGARWOOD.SURGERYPPG@BTINTERNET.COM

Following the meeting last month hosted by Kim Taylor with senior directors of Operose we have now received from them an action plan as to how they propose to monitor and improve services offered by them to the patient group of both CGH and now of course Beggarwood as they also hold our contract. Further meetings with Operose and ourselves, again hosted by Kim Taylor, are planned for later in May/June to monitor and review the plan. SURGERY UPDATE Two new doctors have joined the CGH team, a Dr Robinson and Dr Ambrose who will both come on board in the next few months. A receptionist is being sought for Beggarwood to fill a vacancy. It was reported that during the last few weeks an occasion had arisen when Beggarwood surgery had reached a staff/patient capacity. Fortunately, CGH has a Duty Capacity Response Team, which enabled urgent patients from Beggarwood to be seen at Camrose. We asked if patients were more pleased just to be able to see a doctor or whether there were complaints about having to travel to Camrose. There have been no complaints about the travel involved. We applauded the decision to open the response team at Camrose to Beggarwood patients. We also asked if people are being told why they are being asked to go to Camrose, and Operose confirmed that a clinician would explain the situation and advise patients about why they need to go there rather than being seen at Beggarwood. We continue to receive good comments on face-to-face appointments being made available, even at short notice. Also, that the reception team at the surgery are being as helpful as they can in helping patients sort out the confusion that NHS England has caused with the integration of patient records and the inability for some patients to order prescriptions online. We also noted that Beggarwood no longer has its own dedicated Practice Manager; instead we now have a General Manager (Claire Osbourne) covering all four CGH sites. Operose said CGH was learning some good ways from Beggarwood and has taken these on board. A new phone system went in last week, which will enable the staff to listen to calls and track any problems. Beggarwood/Operose Open Meeting The Beggarwood Community Centre has been booked by our local M.P. Maria Miller to host the Community Feedback session previously mentioned in our last communication. This will take place on 16th July starting at 10:00 hrs and is scheduled to last 1 hour. Please come along if you can as your feedback will be useful in helping Operose understand any concerns you may have and enable them to, if necessary, fine tune their services at Beggarwood and the CGH practices. Social Media and Complaints Remember, as stated in our previous newsletter, Social Media platforms can be used to give vent to our feelings relating to what we judge are let downs in the service we expect. However, the best way to improve any service we receive is to formally complain to the right people at the right time. In our healthcare issues the correct way to do this is by using the prescribed NHS England channels. In Beggarwood’s case the correct email address for complaints/comments is : NHCCG.BEGGARWOODSURGERY@NHS. NET or by phoning or visiting the surgery and asking for a formal complaint form. Please note it is important that these matters are communicated in writing. In this way they will be seen by the CCG (Clinical Commissioning Group), and the CQC (Care Quality Commission) when the surgery is inspected. The surgery then has a set number of days to investigate the situation and respond to your complaint/comment. If you feel after receiving the reply that it did not meet your expectations or the surgery did not correctly respond to you then you can then escalate the problem to the NHS Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) again via email : NHCCG.COMPLAINTS@NHS.NET or NHCCG.ENQUIRIES@NHS.NET . The CCG will carry out its own investigation and report back to you. PPG email address To gather a wider patient view of Beggarwood Surgery we have decided to publish a NON-MEDICAL email address that will be viewed by the PPG team so that we can correlate your views into our regular meetings with the practice. Suggestions for input might be : ● The ease of booking an appointment or call back ● The surgery waiting area environment ● Helpful suggestions for improvements within practice ● Feedback on the reception and medical staff Once again, we stress this is for Non-Medical feedback as we are not medically trained and the email address will only be monitored on an irregular basis. If you have an urgent medical problem please contact the surgery directly or ring 111. The email address is : beggarwood.surgeryppg@btinternet.com We look forward to receiving your comments. Finally, we are always looking for new members to join our PPG and so if you would like to join please use the aforementioned email address to register your interest and we will be happy to have you on board.

NEWS FROM THE HOSPITAL

Covid continues with 203 people in the hospitals. The Trust continues to operate enhanced covid controls, please check before visiting. This continues to impact on efforts to reduce the elective care backlog. A & E attendances have significantly increased with patients often experiencing long waiting times. Always seek care elsewhere first, e.g. local pharmacy, NHS111 or GP. Basingstoke hospital building is now showing considerable signs of wear and tear. Plans for a new Hospital remains on course to open by 2030.

Treasury funding rules require local hospitals to rigorously demonstrate the case for major expenditure. The aim is to complete this shortly, leading then on to public consultation. National groups are reviewing health care strategy moving towards more ‘care in the community’; and how the planned 48 new hospitals programme is coordinated. Cancer treatment targets continue to be met, haematology has just won a national award, and vacancies are down

Article from Parish of Basingstoke Down How big is your world?

At the click of a button, we can travel across the world; or is the world brought into the palm of our hand? Neither actually happens and yet we can become so emotionally entangled in what we read and see that we can feel moved to act. It wasn’t long ago that we would rely on a daily newspaper for each instalment of the world’s news. But now we can have a 24-hour stream from a multitude of sources. When we have a baby or we have a life-altering accident, our world suddenly shrinks; every waking moment is dominated by the change. We may forget that a friend has been away on holiday or miss some headline news because it isn’t related to coping with the next step of our current challenge. Deliberately changing the size of our world is unique to humans. Any other animal can only be aware of its surroundings in the here and now, they are not able to ‘travel’ to other parts of the world, they naturally concentrate on what’s close to home. Astronauts, seeing Earth from outer space experience something called the overview effect (coined by Frank White); it can feel like a contradiction. Feeling incredibly small, seeing the Earth apparently hanging in the void but with a powerful self-awareness at the same time. NASA astronaut Ron Garan explained, while looking down at the Earth during a manoeuvre on the ISS, he felt “flooded with emotions”, “as if time stood still” but sadness came over him as “despite the overwhelming beauty…serious inequity exists on the apparent paradise…nearly one billion people don’t have clean water to drink…injustice, conflicts, poverty…”. From this perspective he felt nothing was impossible. As Christians we believe God is 3 in 1. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Jesus (God the Son) was God in human form—he experienced what it’s like to be human. Jesus met with the sick, the poor, the outcast from society and he didn’t judge them. In Jesus’ time, there was no internet so he couldn’t ‘travel’ across the world at the click of a button. His concerns were solely to do with the people he was with in the here and now. Jesus did a lot of walking and travelling by boat. His world was, effectively, very simple and very small. But the bible tells us that he often pulled in crowds of 5000 or more—word spread fast about this Galilean prophet; everyone wanted to hear what he had to say. Jesus was often asked questions, for example “who is my neighbour?” or “who will get into the kingdom of heaven?”—it is well documented that Jesus often didn’t answer questions directly but would answer in parables. This would help people to look at things from a different perspective. For example, learning the importance of humility and our neighbours may be someone from a very different culture to ours. In my role as a counsellor, clients sometimes come with issues related to a perspective they hold. My job involves walking alongside them while we uncover from where their ideas and beliefs originate and then explore other perspective and work out if they’re more favourable. For example, many people struggle with poor self-worth, low self-esteem and/or low confidence. Feelings of anxiety and depression can be compounded by societal expectation. Guilt and shame play powerful roles as well. When life’s been impacted by trauma, the world can shrink, it feels shameful to be inward looking; societies judgments loom large and this compounds the issue. The most important part of their recovery (in my experience) is to learn self-compassion—something they’ve been conditioned not to show themselves. If Jesus was around today, what messages do you think he would have for us? Would he carry the latest iPhone around in his pocket? What apps would he use? Who would he consider at the fringes of society today? These are the people he would spend his time with. When I was a Kew Gardens a couple of weeks ago, I found the Treetop Walkway breath-taking. We we’d only taken 108 steps up into the tree canopy but I felt the new perspective, looking across London, allowed me to realise both how small and how powerful I can be. I am but 1 human. As a counsellor I only ever sit with 1 person at a time. My world may feel very small at times, I’m no world leader but it doesn’t make my work any less important. While it’s incredible that we have the technology to find out what’s going on across the world it’s what we do in the here and now that’s important. We have the power to think like Ron Garan (astronaut), if we put our minds to it, nothing is impossible.
