he weather has certainly not been anything to write home about and despite a promising start to May the weather has been unpredictable to say the least. Lets hope it improves soon so that we can take advantage as restrictions lift. Local elections are now behind us and Kempshott and Buckskin are combined into one new ward. Contact details for new councillors are on page 30. The dedication of a bench in Anne's memory will take place in the Inspero gardens during a celebration of life service on 11th July. Due to current restrictions any visitors are asked to come after 2pm when the gardens will be better placed for photos. A memorial service is currently being planned for September in St Marks church Kempshott when restrictions should be eased.

CURTAIN UP FOR PICTURES IN THE PARK AT NEW VENUE Outdoor cinema will be back in Basingstoke this summer with the return of the popular Pictures in the Park event.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has lined up 10 fantastic film favourites, to be shown on the big screen at a new venue, The Walled Garden at Down Grange, from Thursday 8 July to Sunday 11 July. Audiences will be treated to a very special outdoor cinema season in the beautiful surroundings of the Walled Garden and for the first time, due to a day-safe screen, there will be afternoon screenings in addition to evening performances, so that people of all ages can enjoy the entertainment which is part of Basingstoke Festival 2021. Movie blockbusters will include Frozen 2, Wonder Woman 1984, Downton Abbey, Ghostbusters, Bridesmaids, Madagascar, Black Panther, The Incredibles, Back To The Future and get ready for a musical extravaganza with The Greatest Showman Sing-along! As in previous years, cinema-goers are invited to bring their own deckchairs and a picnic or buy hot drinks and snacks on site. Ticket holders should check the Pictures in the Park website for any updates and wrap up warm for evening screenings. To ensure that the event is COVID-secure, audience numbers will be limited and safety measures will be in place. Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council's Arts and Events Manager Ross Harvie said: “After the difficult time everyone across the borough has faced during the pandemic, we are delighted to be bringing back the popular Pictures in the Park event in the stunning surroundings of The Walled Garden at Down Grange. “This year, we have a larger selection of great movies to bring some much-needed entertainment to the borough and there really is something for everyone". “We are looking forward to seeing everyone and I’m sure there will be a fantastic atmosphere as friends and family get together for the outdoor cinema experience. So don’t miss your chance to come along and keep an eye out on the Basingstoke Festival social media channels for regular updates before tickets go on sale in the middle of May.” Tickets will be priced between £5 and £15, plus booking fee, and go on sale in mid May at https://www.basingstokefestival.co.uk/picsinpark2021/ Find out more about Down Grange at https://www.basingstoke.gov.uk/walledgarden Follow @basingstokefestival on Facebook and @BstokeFestival on Twitter and Instagram.

CHINEHAM & SHERFIELD PARK SCARECROW TRAIL 24TH- 25TH JULY Come and join Basingstoke and District Disability Forum (BDDF) on 24th – 25th July for

this fantastic annual community event. ‘The Rolls Royce of Scarecrow Trails’ returns, local residents are busily constructing their entries which follow this years’ theme ‘Heroes and Villains’. Last year, we surpassed all expectations and the hundreds of families that attended enjoyed the 96 amazing entries over 2 trails which covered a total of 6 miles. This year all scarecrows will remain on display until 30th July, so everyone has a chance to complete the trail. Saturday’s family activities will be based at Chineham Christ Church, then moving to Sherfield Park Community Centre on Sunday. These will include local craft stalls, refreshments, raffle and the fantastic team from ‘Pop Up and Play’ will be providing entertainment for the kids. For those coming from further afield, parking will be available at Four Lanes Community School. As your local disability charity, it is important to us that the route is completely accessible and has been carefully considered to include drop curbs to be inclusive to all mobility levels. If you want to get involved there are loads of ways that you can support us, as well as taking part in the event to follow the trail. We are a small charity and rely on the help of our volunteers. You could support disabled people taking part with a guided walk, assist at the main sites with maps and refreshments, or help the organization of the event. If you would like to get involved, please contact info@bddf.org.uk. Last year we raised £5077, these are vital funds for the charity to continue our work – all services are free to access, from seated yoga to IT courses and our signposting services, and will support our mission to facilitate increased awareness, active involvement, and healthy promotion of disability and those who live it. For more information, please visit our website www.bddf.org.uk, telephone 01256 423869 or follow us on social media to keep up to date with our services.

We are currently learning all about lifecycles – we’ve had a delivery of caterpillars and we are watching them grow every day, patiently waiting for them to change into butterflies. We are watching them wiggle and eat and are keeping a diary of the changes we see. It’s very exciting and the children are looking forward to releasing butterflies into the garden. We also had a new tough tray delivered which we used to look at frogspawn. We will soon be looking at tadpoles and learning about the life cycle of a frog. We had deaf awareness week in May and talked about how signing can help people communicate when they can’t hear or talk. We use Makaton as part of our learning at preschool and our children are taught new signs each week. To tie in with lifecycles we have been learning how to sign butterfly. We’ve continued to spend lots of time outdoors. We’ve made obstacle courses together and the children created their own seesaw with a step and a wooden plank. We have seen so much teamwork, ideas, critical thinking, predicting, gross motor skills, core strength building and turn taking in our garden activities, which is just amazing. As a charity run preschool, we usually hold lots of fund raising events through the year. Covid-19 has prevented us from running our usual events, but we’re really excited that in June we will be having our sponsored obstacle course race – which is just like a mini sports day. Some of the children will be changing independently into their PE kits as part of their school preparation, and then parents will be cheering them around our super fun obstacle course. This month we also celebrate Father’s Day. This year the children are organising a bring and buy sale. They will be donating gifts for the sale, and then be independently choosing their very own present for Daddy to give him for Fathers Day. WE ARE ENROLLING NOW FOR SEPTEMBER 2021 – to enquire about a space at Kempshott Under Fives, please contact Melissa Gerding, Preschool Manager, on 07951 660401, or email kempu5@aol.com. You can see weekly updates from Hatch Warren Under Fives on our Facebook page “Kempshott Under Fives”, you can also take a virtual tour of our preschool in the video section. 5 Hello from the Kempshott Schools Association! We have been working hard to come up with some creative fundraising ideas for the Infant and Junior Schools this term and we are delighted to announce the launch of a new and exciting School Lottery which is open to everyone in the community!!! Due to the several lockdowns this past year, we have been unable to have our usual fairs, cake sales and events that we normally run each year, so we are hoping the launch of this lottery will help fill our fundraising gap! Selling 200 tickets a week means a £57 weekly cash prize and raises £4,160 a year for our schools!! It would be amazing to reach our target of 200 tickets this term! It’s very simple! ● Choose 6 numbers between 0-9 and if they match the weekly lottery draw you can win a guaranteed minimum prize worth £20, plus a chance to win a jackpot of £25k. ● Tickets cost just £1 each and all profits go to our schools. ● The draw takes place every Saturday at 8pm. ● Winners are posted online and on the Kempshott Schools Assocation facebook page. ● To join our lottery please go to www.YourSchoolLottery.co.uk and search for Kempshott Schools ● Good luck everyone! Your support will help make a huge difference for our local school children.

UPDATE FROM CRANBOURNE Cranbourne’s Ofsted Success Cranbourne School is incredibly pleased

with its latest Remote Ofsted Inspection. Inspectors, at the end of March have praised the school for its support of students during a difficult learning period and their transition back into in-school learning. This inspection was key to help highlight the hard work both Cranbourne’s staff and students have put into learning. Ofsted quoted “Staff thought sensitively about remote education offered to Year 11 pupils and the support needed on their return to school”. As a school, Cranbourne prides itself in extending its ethos “Excellence in Everything” to every facet of the school. This really shone through during a trying period, when a large percentage of the school were learning from home. Following this observation, different departments were commended for the consideration and effort put into maintaining an excellence in the teaching and support of the students. From the Science department planning and conducting practical experiments, the library’s ‘click-and-collect’ service to help ensure pupils continue to read books that engage them, to the wonderful work from the SEND team with Ofsted quoting “Relationships between school staff and families of pupils with SEND are strong. This was reflected in responses to Ofsted’s Parent View. These parents were unanimous in agreeing that the school gives their child the support they need to succeed.” Mrs Aplin, Headteacher of Cranbourne commented: “I’m absolutely delighted with this report from Ofsted. My staff have worked jolly hard to meet the needs of our children and families since March 2020. This deep commitment and high quality of education has been recognised by inspectors. I’m hugely proud of our school. Our motto “Excellence in Everything” applies to all aspects of what we achieve as a school – even in a pandemic!” You can read the full report from Ofsted here:http://www.cranbourne.hants.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/ Ofsted-Report.pdf Year 6 Intake Since March 2021 we have been getting to know the students and families who will be joining us in September 2021. We are very proud of our transition process; it is very important that our new Year 7 students feel excited and happy about coming to Cranbourne. We have already held two online Welcome meetings and are delighted to have launched our 6 week programme of online lessons. We are offering two lessons per week in a range of subjects. This is an excellent opportunity for our new Year 7 students to meet other students that will be joining Cranbourne and get to know each other and members of our staff. Ms Corrigan, our Transition Co-ordinator has already started her visits to the primary schools and is really enjoying meeting the children who will be joining us and their teachers. Our two Induction Days will be held on 1st and 2nd July 2021 and it will be fantastic to finally have the children in school so that they can really experience what it is like to attend Cranbourne. The summer term is usually very busy and we are hoping that our “normal” events will return this year (depending on Government guidance). Watch this space for further news on what is happening at Cranbourne in the summer!

NORTH HAMPSHIRE PROSTATE CANCER SUPPORT GROUP At the April Zoom meeting of the North Hampshire Prostate Cancer Support Group meeting, our speaker Tony

Bennett the Chief Executive of Woking Mind, one of the independent charities affiliated to the National Mind Charity, started by sharing some sobering statistics. These figures now show that 1 in 4 of us will at some time in our lives have a mental health issue with 90% feeling a stigma as a result. He explained that it is normal for someone to take around a year to open up to their problems of which two thirds are work related. Tony gave as his definition for good mental health “ the ability to cope pretty well with whatever life throws at us” As a charity he shared that they provide a number of services from ‘drop in’, depression and mindfulness counselling, community wellbeing calls and ‘walking for health’ events, with their aim being to help people understand, know and identify the issue and to seek help. He highlighted how Covid which has impacted all of us, has heightened the level of worry and anxiety for many. He then set out some of the mental health issues becoming apparent as lockdown is eased. Tony spent time explaining how anyone of us can help someone suffering, with ways to get them to open up and share and whilst never trying to provide a diagnosis, talking positively helping to show how exercise, diet, sleep and just setting aside a time to have fun and ‘ME’ time can all help. For those who struggle to get to sleep, Tony mentioned his own trick of lying comfortably and gradually getting his body to relax starting at his head – he has never completed the exercise – sleep always conquers him first! Perhaps the most pertinent part of Tony’s talk was his time pointing out that all of us have physical health issues, but as human beings our mental health is the second side of the coin so to speak, with this being increasingly being recognised by healthcare professionals. Indeed 30% of physical problems have a mental health link, with the mental impact on physical health estimated to be costing the NHS around £8Bn a year. It is for this reason our group’s exercise classes play such an important role in supporting our members especially during treatment, as it helps create a positive mental outlook with enhanced outcomes. In conclusion Tony’s prescription for helping to maintain good mental health includes being able to talk about issues with others, being active, taking up learning new things which gives a sense of purpose, surprisingly giving to others also helps as does setting specific time aside for oneself, and finally as has been increasingly recognised recently, connecting with nature. Tony’s talk was so well received that members unanimously voted for him to talk to us again about Churchill’s Black Dog times, when it is hoped he can speak in person to us, especially as it looks as if normal physical meetings can soon resume.

Kempshott Green SPACE Space KEMPSHOTTWildlife, WILDLIFE, GREEN Old Down & Beggarwood Wildlife Group

There was some welcome rain last month which perked up the cowslips on the meadows. But the display on Old Down is not really up to its usual standard – the top part of the meadow is looking lovely but not so the lower part. There appear to be so many more wild strawberries on the sites this spring – the white flowers look so pretty along the verges. Unfortunately last month there were frosts at night which has not been good for insects. Many will not have survived the frosts and already the effect can be seen in that there are definitely less bees, butterflies and other insects around. In particular there are less moths and this is really bad for bats and some bird species. So it seems that this year there are likely to be fewer insects to pollinate the spring blossoms – such as apple and cherry. Cowslips on Old Down

Save the Oak Trees. You may be aware of the recently approved planning permission for distribution warehouses at Oakdown and junction 7 M3. It is of great concern that Basingstoke Council has totally ignored the significant impacts this development will have on local biodiversity and the Nature Recovery Network and its own policies in respect of biodiversity, green infrastructure and tackling climate change. The development is wholly incompatible with national aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions and carbon reduction. Particularly disappointing is the fact that Basingstoke Council has approved the destruction of a woodland corridor of 67 mature oak trees, 3 mature beech trees and a further 13 oak trees. For many decades these trees have been providing habitats and homes to many notable species and are a core part of the local Nature Recovery Network. These trees are irreplaceable. In addition, the development will block wildlife movement between some very old copses adjacent to the development site. There is much criticism in the world regarding the destruction of rain forests – this Council can’t even keep a row of beautiful mature trees. Surely if the development must go ahead, the retention of the trees could be a requirement of the permission. There is a petition out at the moment, supported by SWAG (South West Action Group) and this Group is asking that the Council debate the issue of the destruction of the trees. Perhaps you would be prepared to support this and sign the petition – it can be found on change.org/saveoakdownoaks. I do hope you decide to sign – if there are 4,000 or more signatures the Council will debate the matter. Work parties: For Old Down we meet outside Old Down Hall every Thursday 10-12 noon and for Beggarwood 10-12 noon on the first Tuesday of the month. Please come along. Check our website for up-dates. Just let it grow Last year the Council instigated a trial Biodiversity Improvement Zone (BIZ) in an attempt to improve biodiversity around the town. The first area chosen was along the loop of Beggarwood Lane and Woodbury Road through Beggarwood and Hatch Warren. The most obvious indication of this BIZ project was that grass verges were not cut or only cut selectively along road edges. It was unfortunate that the first full year of the project coincided with COVID and the associated lockdowns. We have long urged less grass cutting as uncut areas allow wild flowers, i.e. "weeds" in some peoples’ eyes, to flourish. Flowers and grasses are the bottom of the food chain for whole swathes of fauna. There was, however, a concern that uncut verges would offend the more tidy minded residents but, in reality, the number of complaints was surprising low. More………………………..

and Conservation News forFOR June AND CONSERVATION NEWS JUNE

To show an "improvement" we need to start with some "baseline" data. The Council did an initial flora survey before the start of the project and after one year demonstrated dramatic improvements in species numbers. What they did not do was a baseline survey for invertebrates. This is a difficult job at the best of times as there are just so many insects. Assembling experts to collect and identify these is a daunting task, let alone in the midst of a pandemic. To give an idea of the scale of the task, there are just over 24,700 species of insect in the UK, 7,760 of which are bees, ants and wasps.

14-spot Ladybird

Volunteers have now started doing regular invertebrate surveys on the Beggarwood and Hatch Warren BIZ project, concentrating on selected spots over the year. Despite the cool spring, our first session was very successful in that it demonstrated what insects and spiders are around in the second week of May. For example, we recorded seven species of ladybird: Pine, Kidney-spot, Orange, 22spot, 16-spot, 14-spot and a lone 7-spot (that's the common one). There were also good ranges of flies, shield bugs, leafhoppers, planthoppers and spiders.

Gooden’s Nomad Bee

We also recorded some interesting bee species, including a number of common Ashy Mining Bees as well as a Nomad bee. The Nomad looked superficially like a wasp in colouration, but careful examination revealed it was covered in short fur which made it a bee, a nice find.

FUZZY DROVE CONSERVATION GROUP If you have walked along Fuzzy Drove or the footpaths around the Kempshott area during the last few months you will probably have seen a rat or two. At the Old Roman Road end of Fuzzy Drove there have been a number of sightings of rats and our group has been contacted by concerned members of the public who have also seen them in this area. We advise these people that we are not licensed to carry out pest control in the Drove and to either contact a pest control agency if they are coming into their garden or the local council. It would appear that a number of people have contacted Basingstoke & Dean Borough Council (BDBC) regarding rats as we have been informed that BDBC are looking at the problem and how to deal with the issue with their pest control department. Our group’s concern is that if poisonous bait is used this could result in it entering the food chain of the local wildlife including hedgehogs and birds (Red Kites often feed on carrion), but we are confident that professional pest control staff will mitigate these risks and remove any poisoned rat carcasses for safe disposal. The rat problem is not just a local one. There are numerous news stories available via the internet that give explanations of why this increase in rat numbers has occurred across the country recently, namely that restaurants and fast food outlets closed during the last lockdown which forced the rat population to find new sources of food. They previously fed on food waste generated by restaurants and takeaways, but now found an easy source of food in peoples’ domestic dustbins and gardens where, due to the lockdown, people were spending more time at home producing more waste, as well as feeding the birds in their gardens. One report stated that nationally the rat population had increased by eighty percent during the lockdown and stated that it was unlikely that the rats’ habits would return to their pre lockdown status, which is rather worrying. On a brighter note we actually had a small work party on 17th April which consisted of supporting some of our saplings, cutting back some intrusive brambles which were closing in on the path to Kempshott Gardens and clearing pieces of rubbish from the length of the Drove. It was great to be caring for the Drove again and to see so many members of the public who were using it that day and who are always so supportive of our work. Due to the very cold and dry April this year some of the spring flowers took their time to come into flower such as the native bluebells, which are in various places along the Drove, but the good news is that cold weather helps the open flowers to last longer for us to all enjoy. For more information about our group and work parties please visit our Facebook page: 'Fuzzy Drove Conservation Group' or our website: www.fuzzydrove.co.uk

PROBUS HEARS ABOUT MEETING PRINCE PHILIP Like most of the nation, following the passing of the Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh on 9th April, Probus

Club of Basingstoke member Stephen Thair was sure that he was not the only member with reminiscences of this man who had been present throughout his life. One memory was from many years ago and in a far-off land. “I was fortunate to meet him briefly on the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Tour of the Commonwealth in 1977, when I was working as a Barrister and Solicitor in the Department of Justice, in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea” explained Stephen. “With my wife, Margaret, we had arrived there In April 1975, and so were able to watch some of the ceremonies when the country achieved independence in September that year, when Prince Charles came to do the honours, so to speak.” At the time of the Silver Jubilee Tour, he was running a Junior Scout Troup of mainly expatriate boys (the PNG equivalent of a Cub Pack) with another leader, an Australian Scouter called Geoff. The final engagement of the Queen and Prince Philip in Papua New Guinea before they left for the next leg of their journey was to inspect an assembly of PNG Scouts and Guides. They were lined up for the royal inspection in a giant horse-shoe on the Murray Barracks’ parade ground in Port Moresby, with the Guides forming one side of the horse-shoe, and the Scouts the other. The Scouts and Guides being well-organised were all in position for 11am, when the inspection was due to commence, with the pipe band of the Pacific Islands Regiment behind them. However, 11am came and went, with no sign of the royal party. The tropical sun rose ever higher in the sky over the parade ground, and it was, to say the least, very hot. Eventually, at around midday, the Queen and Prince Philip and their escort arrived. The Pacific Islands Regiment band began to play, and the Queen and Prince Philip began their inspections, accompanied in each case by the great and the good of PNG Guiding and Scouting. “Our troop was in line with me at one end of it, and Geoff at the other end. We had other Scout Groups either side of us. Prince Philip and his party were about two groups away from us on the inspection, when the boy standing next to Geoff fainted because of the heat, and Geoff had to carry him off to the shade of a tree where fortunately he revived. However, by then Prince Philip had arrived at our Group, and so Geoff missed out, and I was the only representative for him to speak to.” “Prince Philip asked me what I was doing in the country and when I had explained, he asked if I was enjoying it – which I was – and then moved on. He was perfectly pleasant to me. I had been a bit anxious as my father had told me a story of a solicitor friend of his who had been introduced to Prince Philip at an event of some kind, and when he replied to a question from Prince Philip as to what he did, received the comment “Oh no, not another b* * * * y solicitor!”. Thus, another interesting PNG experience drew to a close. Stephen always felt marginally guilty that Geoff missed out on a Prince Philip encounter, although in fairness it could just as easily have been the boy next to him who fainted! 6 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LOSING WEIGHT Weight loss is sold as a quick fix dream, follow this plan for 12 weeks, lose the weight, job done, easy The reality is a little bit different, you want to lose weight, and keep it off forever? Here's 6 things you need to know about losing weight 1. Yes it's a case of eat less and move more. Losing weight is simple, but it's not easy - you're a complicated human being. 2. Yes you can eat chocolate and drink alcohol, but not all the time. You will have to sacrifice somewhere 3. It can be lonely, and you'll think you're the only one in the world feeling lost, stuck and helpless - your mind is an important part of this puzzle. 4. Get okay with enjoying the process, not every day is going to be a walk in the park, you're going to struggle to stay consistent sometimes. 5. Ignore anyone that tells you, you can't eat carbs, or that you won't lose weight if you don't eat enough - listen to the science and you'll end up a lot happier in the long run. 6. With that being said, it's about finding the right path for you, because once you do, you'll be able to look in the mirror again, you'll fit into smaller sized clothes forever, and wake up every day with a spring in your step. The difference between the Lean Bean Course and any other weight loss coach out there selling a course Is that I'm always going to be honest with you. You'll feed off my daily positivity for sure. But I'm not afraid to tell you how it is either I do my job because I'm passionate about reversing this horrible yo-yo dieting world we are living in and it's not going to change if fit pros keep lying to you about it. Some of you will read this and still go and join the next Juice Plus programme available. But some will be ready for a sustainable, realistic lifestyle change, because you're at the end of your tether... sick, tired and bored of constantly starting a new diet, and if that's you, send me an email with the words LEAN BEAN and I’ll send you over more details and we’ll see it if’s right for you Social media: @foodislife.nutrition Yours In Health, Website: www.foodislifenutrition.com Email: steph@foodislifenutrition.com

RUBBISH

Ten items of rubbish on my walk Discarded on the pathside grass Left there by the careless few So I pick them up as I pass There’s always a bin not far away And that is what makes me bitter So easy to drop the rubbish in So shame on all those who litter.

SUCCESS WITH SUPPORT FOR LOCAL FAMILIES WITH NEW BABIES DURING LOCKDOWN

“Covid has made the pregnancy and birth of my first child a lonely experience and a difficult one… The support I received was quick, thorough and comforting.” The first lockdown a year ago was a sudden shock for every one and we all needed to make very rapid adjustments to our lives. For families with newborn babies this meant an immediate change to the support they would normally have been able to access. It’s tough becoming a parent at the best of times.Your life is irrevocably changed. It’s so stressful learning a whole new role and having the biggest responsibility of your life thrust upon you 24 hours a day when you are utterly exhausted. Everyone jokes, when you are expecting a baby, about the sleepless nights, but the reality is often way more intense than you could ever have imagined. Throw in a pandemic, lockdown, loss of the immediately accessible support of friends and family, loss of normal support systems and processes and no way to meet with other new parents to share tips, ideas, mutual support. Some people with new babies also had school age children suddenly at home full time. It’s been a tough time for people having a baby in the past year! New parents in our country often find the early stages of breastfeeding especially intense and stressful. Most mothers in Basingstoke start out breastfeeding (80%) and sadly, many of these mums find they stop breastfeeding before they really wanted to, so that, by 6-8 weeks less than half of local mothers are giving any breastmilk at all to their babies. Many mothers feel upset that they were not able to continue to feed their babies in the way they planned to. Since 2013, we have been fortunate in Basingstoke to have some breastfeeding drop-ins set up where parents can just turn up and ask for help from qualified professional breastfeeding counsellors. This drop-in support is usually at the hospital on Mondays and at Brookvale Hall on Fridays. It makes a big difference to local mums and they say they feel more confident, feel supported in the decisions they make and are able to breastfeed for longer. So lockdown presented quite a challenge for this service too. Within two weeks of the initial lockdown our breastfeeding counsellors had found a way! And many local mums found their way to the new way of working too. An online video appointment service was set up and was very quickly working effectively. Since April 2020 across North Hampshire, nearly 1,000 video call appointments have taken place between new families and breastfeeding counsellors. The mothers who accessed this new support were surveyed recently and, overwhelmingly, they like this new way of working. They have consistently said how helpful the support has been. 84% of them have said they were able to breastfeed for longer, 98% said they would recommend this service, 95% said their issue was partially or wholly resolved by speaking with one of the breastfeeding counsellors and 86% said their confidence increased as a result of their appointment. These are amazing results which really demonstrate how effective it is. 95% of mothers who reached out for this support were still giving their baby some breastmilk at 6 weeks; that’s a huge difference compared to what happens otherwise. It’s been easier for parents to get help early too, more mums had an appointment when their baby was under two weeks old than previously went to the drop-ins. Being able to get good support when you are still in your PJs at home has a lot of advantages. Receiving support from a specialist, qualified breastfeeding counsellor in those crucial early weeks really is a game-changer for mothers and their babies. The breastfeeding counsellors also support mums who decide to bottle feed and one of these mums recently said ‘Thanks so much… I came away and said to my husband how lovely you were and how easy you were to talk with!’ Here are just a few of the other things mums have been saying about this support: “life-line for mothers, breastfeeding doesn't always come easily...You can get advice in so many ways but none compares to that of a trained professional” “Lockdown is incredibly lonely, especially when you're trying to raise a baby, the video appointment was so valuable to me.” “I was reassured and given confidence to continue breastfeeding my third baby...The service was amazing.” “I was a bit sceptical about the video service but the counsellors absolutely make it work and make a real difference” Our team of local breastfeeding counsellors (Anne, Fiona, Kate, Mindy and Sarah) all breastfed their own babies and really know how it feels to experience both the worries and the joys and so are now dedicated to helping others. They have have all completed university level qualifications and are specialists in breastfeeding. They have over 50 years experience between them of supporting other mothers to feed their babies however they decide to. They provide up-to-date, accurate information with care, empathy and compassion. The work they have done with these video appointments is free to mothers and has been partially funded by a combination of the NHS midwifery team, a special lottery Covid grant, some donations and some previous fundraising by local mothers for the NCT. The Covid grant funding came to an end at the end of March. If you’d like to help with fundraising, do get in touch via hantsbf@gmail.com. If you’d like to donate, the JustGiving page is: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/nctbasingstokeandandover If you would like some support with any aspect of feeding your baby, please do contact the breastfeeding counsellors via their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/HampshireBreastfeedingCounselling or via email hantsbf@gmail.com

Citizens Advice Basingstoke - Accessible, Reliable, and Independent

Scams

It can be hard to tell if something is a scam - that is why they work. Fraudsters are cunning and adapt quickly to convince you into parting with your money. Scams can come in many different disguises, so it’s important to know the warning signs to look out for and what to do if you have or think you have been targeted. Check if something might be a scam. It might be a scam if: ● it seems too good to be true – for example, a holiday that’s much cheaper than you’d expect. ● someone you don’t know contacts you unexpectedly. ● you suspect you’re not dealing with a real company – for example, if there’s no postal address ● you’ve been asked to transfer money quickly. ● you've been asked to pay in an unusual way – for example, by iTunes vouchers or through a transfer service like MoneyGram or Western Union ● you’ve been asked to give away personal information like passwords or PINs. ● you haven't had written confirmation of what's been agreed. Detailed Advice on how to deal with Scams can be found on the Citizens Advice Website on https://www.citizensadvice.org. uk/scams. The information given includes the following: Check if you can get your money back after a scam. What to do if you've been scammed. Report a scam. Get help with online scams. Get emotional support if you’ve been scammed. Find out about recent scams ● To find out about scams across the country, you can sign up to the Trading Standards email alert on their website. Trading Standards can investigate and take court action against scammers. ● If you want to know about scams in your local area, sign up for email alerts on Action Fraud's website. ● You can also find out about common financial scams on the Financial Conduct Authority’s website.

What is income tax

If you suspect you have been scammed and you are not sure what to do, or you are seeking advice on a problem you have, If you have a problem, please contact us to see how we can help. Income tax is a tax on income including:

DID YOU KNOW WE TALK ABOUT earnings from employment, including benefits in kind such as a MENTAL HEALTH ALLcarOF THE TIME? company

Matthew Holman – Owner Simpila Mental Health – www.simpila.com

earnings from self-employment most pensions income, including state, occupational and person pensions In my day to day training through Simpila Mental Health, I help people to connect their minds to the understanding that mental health is something that we all have. Firstly we have to raise awareness of this simple fact, we cannot deny the reality that  some social security benefits we have mental health, and every decision that we make will have a mental impact, and no surprise  that this can be defined either a positive or negative impact. We interest onasmost savings UNIQUE BLOCK actually talk about mental health much more than we realise.  examples income shares Let me give some and see iffrom you can spot the signs(dividends) of mental health in the PAVING narrative.  rental income Derek Hooley “I am really worried about my workload and the expectations of my manager” income from a trust. “I am excited tosee my friends at the weekend” (social restrictions being adhered  

So you have heard the messages, we need to talk about mental health. I even have a big sign in my office saying that exact phrase. But would it surprise you to know that we actually talk about mental health all the time? What we need to do better is ‘Listen’ to mental health in our everyday conversations.

Fully insured, local tradesman with 30+ years experience

to of course) “I am waiting for the results of a biopsy” “I am really enjoying getting outside in the sunshine”

Not all types of income are taxable.

Can you spot the signs of mental health? Would you know how to approach a conversation and listen to someone talk about their experiences?

• Driveways & Patios • Walls • Fencing • Cleaning of existing drives & patios

You won't usually have to pay tax on all your income, even if it is all tax 865359 because you will be entitled to a certain amount of07973 income tax free in e 01256 474912the following ye year. The tax year runs from 6 April one year to 5 April

The key to understanding how mental health changes is to listen. We are all born with the ability to listen to others, yet this skill is often compromised with our opinions and views. So we need to listen without judgement. If we can learn to put our opinions aside we can find a much great connection with others – also known as Empathy. Empathy is the ability to connect to the feelings of others, to see the world from their perspective, and sometimes just to sit alongside them for support. So, there is nothing to stop you now from just sitting down with someone, ask them how they are feeling?, and hear the words spoken. This is the first step in talking more about mental health.

KEMPSHOTT NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH NEIGHBOURHOOD I have again had very little information from our police this past month, so I have the chance to address another issue which has been raised to me recently. It concerns perceptions as to exactly what is involved to be an official NW member. Several questions have been asked, and anyone using the Alert system may have seen my recent message on the subject. I know that many people are not registered, so for Kourier households, here is that message;

WATCH

“Recent feedback from some residents has led Basingstoke & Deane NW Association to ask questions of people registered on the Alert system or not. Whilst this National System sends out important crime information and useful messages to its users, there seems to be some questions about NW membership such as There are signs displayed in my road - Am I automatically a member of NW ? I've signed up to Alert so am I a member of NW ? The answer to both questions is NO - unless you have requested to join your local scheme and have been approved by the coordinator. To request to join a local scheme, login to Alert/Ourwatch or whichever portal you originally used and then tick the box requesting to join a local scheme and follow any subsequent points. The coordinator will then get an email to approve you.” There are many reasons for this policy/procedure, not least being GDPR laws and that all coordinators are volunteers with many no longer able to hand deliver messages or personally call on “members”. Finally, one big issue still affecting several roads is speeding vehicles. Measures are underway by Police & Local Council to educate drivers to recognise that most of the Kourier distribution area has a 30mph limit. Please be aware that is an absolute limit and not a target as I’m sure nobody wants to see or hear of a fatality on our roads. Allow yourself adequate time to make your journey safely. As usual, any questions, suggestions or feedback to me at brian.adams@bdnw.org.uk allowing a few days for me to respond.

Brian Adams

E-scooters What you need to know

Police Support Volunteer NW Basingstoke

Did you know it’s illegal to ride a privately owned electric scooter (e-scooter) in public? That’s because e-scooters are classed as motor vehicles in law. So, in theory, this means that you need an MOT, road tax and insurance to use one, however it isn’t currently possible to register e-scooters in this way. Privately owned e-scooters can only be used on private land, with the permission of the landowner.

It’s illegal to ride a privately owned electric scooter in public

You cannot use a privately owned e-scooter on the road, pavement or in a public space. If you do then you risk receiving a large fine, points on your driving licence and your e-scooter could be seized. Some parts of the UK are running government trials of rental e-scooters. If you’re over 16 and have a full or provisional driving licence, then you can use these on public roads and cycle lanes. Just check that your driving licence covers categories AM, A or B.

Lockdown Easing

As we continue to see the easing of lockdown across the country, we are still asking our customers to shop safely, by shopping alone where possible. This is reviewed in line with government guidelines and, our store greeters will continue to monitor social distancing within the store when you arrive/depart.

Nectar – Fruit and Veg Challenge June 2021

The challenge returns for the whole of June, encouraging customers to purchase ruit and vegetables – fresh, dried or frozen – whilst earning bonus Nectar points. When the campaign ran last September/October, over 117million points were claimed. The simplest way to keep track of this challenge is to download the Digital Nectar App from your App Store of choice.

KEEP IT CLEAN AND #DONTBEATOSSER People in the borough are being encouraged to keep it clean while out and about taking exercise or enjoying a takeaway drink or bite to eat this spring.

As lockdown restrictions begin to ease over the spring and summer months Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is urging people to not toss their litter on the floor and to use the bins provided or take your litter home where they are not available. The council has around 2,500 litter bins in the borough and over 40 members of staff helping to keep the streets clean. Roadside verge clearances also take place several times a year but require road closures and contractors to carry out this work safely. Last year the borough launched the #DontBeATosser campaign putting up signage in key litter hot spots around 27 the borough. Dropping litter is an offence and people can be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice of £75 if caught or prosecuted at a Magistrates’ Court. Dropping litter from a vehicle can see a person fined £150 or prosecuted.

CLOUD SERVCIES - THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY Over the past two months I written about data backups and the importance of having a secure off-site copy. Cloud services are the ideal platform as they remove the need for human intervention and are always available…except when they’ve not.

The Good While “The Cloud” is largely a marketing term, put simply, it represents the on-demand availability of computer system resources, especially data storage and computing power. Users can purchase high power computing and storage solutions without large capital expenditure. Cloud based systems are naturally more resilient because the scale of the solutions at the data centre consider system failure. In a normal office scenario, there would typically be one powerful server providing access to the office systems, configured with a certain level of system protection but should that server fail, downtime is incurred while the system gets fixed. In a cloud data centre, the same server is provisioned not as a physical machine, but a virtual machine and these virtual machines run on a machine cluster. Any computer system has three basic components: ● Processor – this represents the engine of the computer, the more powerful the processor, the faster the computer. It’s responsible for talking to all the difference parts of a computers. ● Storage - this is the physical space where all your personal files are installed but more importantly, the files that make up the operating system. ● Memory – often confused with storage, the memory is where computer works with data. It loads data from the storage, into memory and then processes the data so the more memory you have on your system, the faster the system operates. On a normal desktop or laptop, these components are built into the device. Whereas a virtual cluster consists of several individual systems that run special software that shares all these resources and presents them as a single device. The clever part is you can now create a machine instantly on top of this cluster and specify how much resource each virtual machine gets. But the really clever part is that a virtual machine is not tied to a physical machine so should a machine in the cluster fail, the virtual machine gets assigned resources from the rest of the cluster. And this happens almost instantly with zero downtime. This is why cloud computing has become so popular. It’s possible to set up a server in minutes for as little as £30 a month instead of paying thousands for new hardware and software and gain from the benefits outlined above. The Bad Having provisions systems out on the cloud for instant access is great but being public facing, they are there for anyone to potentially connect to. Given how many services are now public, the actual chances of being attacked are quite low. Most “hacks” aren’t the result of people bypassing the security but simply taking advantage of poor password choice or simply a victim of social engineering. So many breaches occur through phishing attacks or exploiting the fact that people still use the same passwords for multiple systems. Poorly secure systems also account data leakage. There have been several instances over the past few years where people stumbled across large sets of data simply because security controls had not been applied. This data included Name, emails addresses, passwords (in some cases), home addresses. Multiple sources of data are often complied into supersets of data and then sold on the data web. Once you have a couple of unique fields, it’s a simple process to collate that data, irrespective of how many sources you have. The Ugly The worse scenarios are associated with availability. The biggest advantage of cloud computing is that you can access the service anywhere at any time…except when you can’t. This could be the result of a failure of the service platform through misconfiguration or from a denial of service attack because of a cyber-attack. There’s also the chance your account has been hijacked because you’ve become a victim of phishing or used the same password for all your accounts. Trying to dupe people to reset passwords is a very common activity. Based in the data sets mentioned earlier, it’s very easy to work out who knows who and who works for who. Often, fake emails are sent from customers that wish to share files and when the link is clicked, the user is asked to log on. But these are fake websites made to look like legitimates ones. The victim innocently completes the form but, by then, they have the credentials and take over your account. The other ugly side of cloud computing is costs. What starts off cheap ends up getting expensive as costs seem to rise and rise. The operational expenses often increase over time, especially when the cloud provider has you tied into a solution. But I guess that’s the price of convenience.

ALL SAINTS CHURCH, DUMMER We are looking for an organist to help out in our local church: All Saints' Church, Dummer, just off Junction 7 of the M3. Sunday services are at 9.45am on the 3rd and 4th Sundays of the month - Morning Prayer (with Matins once a quarter) and Communion - and last just under an hour. We have a small friendly congregation that enjoys singing and would very much like an organist to lead the three or four hymns per service and play introits, extroits etc. Our previous organist has retired. There is no choir. If commitment to only one Sunday is possible we can discuss which is preferable. We are very flexible. The organ has two manuals and is pleasant to play. We fully recognise the need to pay properly for the expertise and commitment and invite you to contact us as soon as possible if you think you might be able to help. Churchwarden 01256 397507

“A CHANGE IS AS GOOD AS A REST” OR “CHANGE IS THE ONLY CONSTANT IN LIFE” ?.... I wonder if you know who may have written the above quotes…it may not be who you think! And which Transition & Transformation

one resonates with you?

Hello. My name is Debbie Veel. I am one of the Licensed Lay Ministers (LLM’s or Readers as they are sometimes known) at St. Mark’s church. LLM’s are not ordained, so we don’t wear a dog collar, but we can do much of what a vicar can do with some notable exceptions. We can’t bless the communion wine and bread; we can’t marry people nor do we baptise anyone. Interestingly enough, we can lead funerals. Other than that we preach, lead worship, prayer and mid-week groups and we are involved in the running of the church. I think of it as being a bit like being a deputy head of a school.

Transition is unsettling and often make us feel ill at ease - It was for the disciples, it is for us at St. Mark’s and it may well be for you. We wonder, “What we’ll do?” and “How we will manage?” Jesus promised to send his disciples a ‘helper’, which we call the Holy Spirit, to guide & support them and enable them to manage and find a way through.

Many exciting things have happened in the church and community under their leadership.
