he recent spell of warm weather certainly helped the Queens Jubilee celebrations and there were a number of street parties and also many of our local pubs were nicely decorated. We hope everyone had a good time.

Most of our clubs are meeting again and the Kempshott village hall is running a normal series of events including Sunday markets. The Inspero gardens has hosted a number of events this month including the 10th anniversary celebration which was attended by the Mayor of Basingstoke. Thank you to the folk who have come forward to deliver the Kourier magazine including the two new deliverers who have taken on the Gabriel park estate. If you can help our contact details can be found inside the back page. We have been advised that the popular service for recycling printer cartridges which as been suspended for nearly a year has restarted, details are included on page 18. Regarding the bottle top collection please note that we can only accept milk bottle tops and not plastic lids etc. Also when dropping off ring pull cans please separate from plastic bottle tops. The Kempshott village hall is looking for assistance with mowing the field to the rear of the social club. If you feel you could assist please contact Michelle on 07595421501. Many thanks for the comments I have received on my holiday in Tanzania earlier this year and the third in the series is included this month.

Deadline for July edition

Monday 13th June

There were 43 members at the meeting held on 1st June who, after the usual tea, coffee and biscuits, were welcomed by the Secretary Tony Brazier in the absence of the Chairman, David Cowling. Tony Brazier then gave details of the forthcoming trips, particularly the itinerary of the Thames cruise from Runnymede.on Thursday 16th June. The Welfare Officer, Christine Broadbent, then brought us up-todate on those members who had not been well. The speaker this month was a return of Mel Rees who had titled his talk “An entertaining talk” which it definitely was. Mel’s motto is to see the humour in things and he certainly does. Mel said that the talk was “nothing deep and meaningful,” however it certainly had all the members laughing at his memories. The talk covered many subjects about everyday life. including Covid and how it has taken 2 years of our lives, his Nans shop in Clapham Junction which she had from 1930-1972 and he remembers incidents from the age of about 10 or 12 years old. He revisited the area recently with his Daughter and although the area had changed dramatically the shop was still there.

Other topics ranged from cards that he had received, bags that he uses now we recycle, his family particularly a son that was naughty and difficult as a child to a 12 week course he attended at Slimming World. In his own words Mel said that “You can’t make it up” Mel writes and publishes his own books. They were available for members to buy. The group's next outing on Thursday 16th June is a Cruise on the Thames from Runnymede, with lunch included, followed on Thursday 14th July by a visit to Hever Castle, and on Thursday August 25th a visit to Hatfield House. . The next meeting is on 6th July and is a light-hearted presentation by (Able Care) called “Life in Care” The group meets on the first Wednesday of each month at Brookvale Village Hall from 10 am to 12 noon and all retired Civil Servants, their relatives and friends are welcome. Further details about the group and information about our meetings and trips can be obtained by contacting:-

Finding an approved Trader

I’ve got loads of problems with my house that I’ve been putting off fixing - a faulty boiler, a window that won’t shut properly, broken light fittings. The list goes on! I want to sort it out but I’ve had bad experiences with dodgy builders in the past. How do I find someone I can trust? Making home improvements can be stressful, but there are a few steps you can follow to help it go smoothly. First, find a Trading Standards ‘approved trader’. You can look for one in your area online or use the Government’s approved trader scheme TrustMark. It’s also worth checking if they’re a current member of a trade body. Trade bodies have codes of practice and can help resolve problems if things go wrong. Ask who they’re registered with and then check the trade body’s website. For any gas and electric fixes, only use certified traders - it’s dangerous to use someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing. You can check the Gas Safe Register for a list of traders and use a registered electrician who can certify their own work. It’s always helpful to get references or recommendations where possible. Ask your friends, family, or neighbours if they know of anyone they’d recommend. You can also ask the person you hire for examples of work they’ve carried out in the past. Try to avoid contractors who won’t give references - it’s a sign they could be dishonest. When you find someone, ask for a written quote - this is different to an estimate. A quote is legally binding, and the tradesperson can’t change it without a good reason - for example, if you ask for extra work to be done. It’s worth comparing quotes from several contractors to make sure you’re getting a fair price. Next, get a written contract. This should cover exactly what you’re paying for and everything you’ve agreed on, including timings, payments, who will pay for materials and any subcontractors if needed. When it comes to payment, it’s best to opt to pay in stages rather than upfront. Try to pay by card if you can - this can give you extra safeguards if something goes wrong. Finally, make sure your trader is fully insured. Keep copies of receipts and your written contract. These will be important as evidence if things go wrong. It’s also helpful to take photos of any problems if they arise. If you have a problem please contact us to see how we can help.

What a celebration…or should we say ‘What celebrations!’ Street parties were celebrated at home and a whole school picnic celebration held too. Queen Elizabeth (life size cardboard cut-out) visited Kempshott Junior School and was impressed with the day. Recently the school has had a visit from the professional skateboarding team called Action Sports Team Rubicon, they also have a shop in Winchester called Butter Skates Shop. All year groups were taught tricks and flips whilst appreciating safety of course! A truly wonderful experience.

In May the whole school took part in the first sports day in since 2019 and parents could attend too! The three houses (Oak, Beach and Ash) competed in many sports events to be crowned top house. It was brilliant to see Sports day back, everyone take part and parents in attendance. Year 6 are practising for their end of year production. Also they are setting up their fundraising to raise money for their BBQ. They will have a festival on the same day as their BBQ to celebrate their achievements throughout their time at Kempshott Junior School. Thank you to two local residents who have kindly donated 100’s of varied daffodil bulbs which our Nature Club will be planting around the school. We continue to support the local charity, Spotlight and so far this year the children have raised money by selling books, sweets and are holding a film club.

CAN I TAKE MY CHILD ON HOLIDAY IF THE OTHER PARENT OBJECTS? This is a question we are often asked when the summer holidays are approaching. The issue for taking a child abroad for a holiday can often be a cause of conflict between separated parents. If you have a Child Arrangements Order which says your child lives with you, then you can take your child abroad for up to one month as long as there are no other court orders prohibiting this. What if the holiday has been booked and paid for? For parents who have previously been able to agree on matters among themselves without requiring legal intervention, the other parent would still have a right of veto over a holiday abroad. This is even if the holiday has been booked. In practice, the Court will consider what is in the best interest of the child, if parents cannot agree, and can make an order about whether they can or cannot go on a particular holiday. If the holiday is soon you would have to seek an urgent hearing and this is not always simple. As a guide, here is what the Court will take into consideration; known as the welfare checklist: ● the wishes and feelings of the child concerned ● the child’s physical, emotional and educational needs ● the child’s age, sex, background and any characteristics of the child which the court considers relevant ● the likely effect on the child of any change in circumstances ● how capable of meeting the child’s needs is each of the child’s parents and any other person in relation to whom the court considers the question relevant ● •any harm that the child has suffered or is at risk of suffering ● Under normal circumstances the Court will take a view that a holiday for a child is a good thing to be enjoyed. Keep Pets Safe All Summer Long 4 tips to overcome warm weather hazards Summer means extra time outdoors. Sunny months provide a perfect opportunity for bonding with pets, but higher temperatures, seasonal plants and pests and additional travel can pose higher risks for complications. To help keep dogs, cats and other pets safe during summer adventures, consider these tips from the experts.

Beat the Heat Dogs and cats cannot control their body temperature by sweating as humans do. They have a small number of sweat glands located in their footpads and primarily regulate their temperature by panting. Vigorous exercise, leaving a pet in a vehicle with poor ventilation – even if the windows are down – or being left outside without shade and water on hot days can lead to heatstroke, or hyperthermia. Increased humidity combined with warmer temperatures intensifies the risk of heat stroke, especially during the first few warm days as pets transition to outdoor activity. If your pet exhibits any symptoms of heatstroke – elevated breathing rates, dry or sticky gums, lethargy, disorientation, abnormal gum color, bruised gums or seizures – pour cool water over your pet’s head, stomach and feet or apply cool, wet cloths, ensure continuous airflow and see a veterinarian immediately. Keep Ticks at Bay As pets spend more time outdoors in the summer, they’re often exposed to pests like ticks. Ticks can transmit serious diseases to both dogs and cats. According to the Companion Animal Parasite Council, as many as 1 in 20 dogs tested positive for tick-borne diseases in 2021. Ticks climb onto pets from blades of grass or fall from overhanging trees and foliage. If a tick finds its way onto your pet, use tweezers or disposable gloves to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible then pull straight out with steady, even pressure until the tick releases. If you find a tick, carefully inspect all areas of skin, including behind the ears and between the toes, for additional ticks. After removing

the tick, thoroughly clean the bite area with soap and water and wash your hands. Save the tick in a resealable plastic bag to show your veterinarian and take note of the time and place the bite occurred and any other details that may aid your veterinarian should an illness occur. Follow your veterinarian’s advice about tick preventative measures, and make sure the product is safe to be used for your pet’s size. Never use dog flea and tick products on cats. Travel Safely If you plan to travel with your pet, pack the necessities for your animal. Your pet’s luggage should include food, water bowls, treats, a leash and collar, toys, medications and printed copies of medical records, including vaccination history. Check with your veterinarian to determine if a health certificate is needed for travel. Also ensure your pet is comfortable with his or her crate or carrier before flying or embarking on a long road trip. Knowing where to take your pet in case of an emergency while away from home is also essential. Look up emergency veterinary clinics near your destination before departing or ask if your vet offers virtual care options. Manage Allergies Many of the same allergens that affect humans impact pets. Atopy, also known as inhalant allergy, is a common cause of skin problems in dogs and cats. Affected animals often have a history of chronic or recurrent itching and tend to have a history of repeated skin or ear infections. Itchy pets tend to scratch themselves, lick their feet and rub on furniture or carpet. Atopy can also cause cats to groom excessively and develop bald or crusty spots on their skin. Some allergies may also affect the respiratory or digestive systems or the eyes. If your pet is displaying signs of allergies, your veterinarian can recommend appropriate testing and treatment to reduce symptoms.

Kempshott Green SPACE Space KEMPSHOTTWildlife, WILDLIFE, GREEN FUZZY DROVE CONSERVATION GROUP On Saturday 4th June, as you can see in the photo, we held a nature treasure hunt for young children and their families in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee. The weather was not too good but several families took part, all the children enjoyed themselves and took home a ribbon-bound certificate, a hand-made bag of sweets and some young sunflower plants to grow on. Prior to this event, on our last working party in May, we had cut back some stinging nettles which had narrowed the pathway on the top half of the Drove. The stinging nettle is a familiar and common plant which the Romans brought to our land. It is often firmly rooted in our memories after our first hands-on experience of prickling irritation that is not easily forgotten! But did you know that the stinging nettle has been used for food, herbal remedies, dyes and fibres for hundreds of years. During the second world war, children were encouraged to collect them so that they could be used to produce green dye for camouflage. Stinging nettles can be found growing in gardens, hedgerows, fields, woodlands and many other habitats. Its preference for damp, fertile and disturbed ground makes it a good coloniser of places enriched by human activities, such as agriculture and development. Stinging nettles are great wildlife attractors. The caterpillars of the small tortoiseshell and peacock butterflies use them as food plants, ladybirds feast on the aphids that shelter among them and seed eating birds enjoy their autumn spoils. To avoid the more painful way of identifying stinging nettles, look for the hairs on its stem, its drooping catkin flowers and oval toothed leaves. Our gardens, like the Drove, are a vital resource for wildlife, providing corridors of green space between open countryside allowing species to move about. In fact the UK's gardens provide more space for nature than all the National Nature Reserves put together! So why not try leaving wilder areas in your garden, such as patches of buttercups in your lawn or nettles near your compost heap, to see who comes to visit? Our Working Parties continue each 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month. All tools are supplied but please bring your own work gloves while Covid is still an issue. Working parties are always enjoyable to take part in as you are helping to improve the habitat for current and future generations, but also meeting and chatting to like-minded people. They run from 10am to mid-day, and we meet in the Drove where the footpath joins from Petrel Croft. More information can be found on our website; Fuzzydrove.co.uk or on our Facebook page; Fuzzy Drove Conservation Group.

Walnut Tree Postscript As many people will be aware, the old walnut tree in the Kempshott Community Orchard, Kendal Gardens succumbed to Storm Eunice back in February. Torn up at the root, it lay there on the ground – all magnificent 50 feet of it, looking even bigger than when it stood upright. We estimated that it was about 100 or more years old as tradition says it was planted in the early 1920s as a memorial to someone who died in WW1. At that time, the land on which it stood was part of the small holding of Mr Cann who lived at ‘The Gables’ in Pack lane, one of the only two semi-detached houses in Pack Lane built before WW1. So far, we have been unable to confirm the tradition or to whom the tree was dedicated. After a brief period as a superior climbing frame for local children (no broken bones as far as we know), there is now little of the old tree remaining. Between the Council’s tree surgeons and local residents, the tree has been chipped and chopped leaving just the main 10 feet of trunk and a log, both of which we hope to keep on site as a convenient seat from which to contemplate the Orchard.

Our Values Make Us Different

Car Park ANPR Cameras A polite reminder with reference to the new parking restrictions at our car park. Parking is free of charge for up to 3 hours and 10 minutes after store closure times. The car park is monitored by a warden during the week to help control these enforcements. If you are at all concerned about the length of your stay, please see a colleague from our customer services team who will glad to assist Charity Partnerships & The Local Hero Scheme We have recently updated the way we help charity and community groups to align with our corporate vision to ‘Help Everyone Eat Better’. We’ll therefore be inviting local community groups to visit the store to understand our role within this vision and, working with them in the longer term to help maintain healthy eating standards. It has meant that we can only support requests for donations which mirror the goal to help everyone eat better. Raffle prizes of chocolate or high in sugar foods (think Easter Eggs etc) cannot be supported. This is where your help in promoting our Local Hero Scheme to your volunteers, could help you in a better way than seeking ad hoc raffle prizes etc. The Local Hero Scheme rewards community groups where any Sainsbury’s Group employee volunteers in their spare time. At the store we already enjoy a tremendous range of volunteers in the community, which in the last year, has helped to distribute over £6000. Each employee who volunteers can claim up to £200 per financial year, which is paid direct to the community group they volunteer with. The funds typically take between 6-8 weeks to be paid as they’re sent from our charity partner, Charity Aid Foundation – CAF. So, the earlier you find any Sainsbury’s Group employee who is connected with your community group, the quicker we can release the funds. (£200 is a lot of raffle prize funds). We’ll continue to ask colleagues here at the store but, often they don’t realise that the work they do for the community group they support, counts as volunteering. So, just ask if any of your volunteers/parents/grandparents etc, work for the Sainsbury’s Group. They can work at any location; Argos, a Sainsbury’s Store, a Depot or at any of our Store Support Centres. If you have any queries, please pop in and see one of our colleagues at the customer services desk. Nectar Almost 90% of customers who shop with us at Kempshott, hold a Nectar card. However, we know that for a number of reasons, not all these customers have downloaded the Nectar App to their smartphone. The Nectar App works quietly in the background recommending a number of bonus points each week, tailored to your usual basket/trolley of shopping. It works for Online customers as well as customers using Smart Shop. In the last six months I have earned over 26000 bonus points (£130) on top of the usual points I’d collect.

the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster that took place in 1986 in the north of Ukraine. This is now urgent as they have not been able to access the treatment needed for their cancers and many will not survive without this treatment. It’s hoped that many will be able to be moved to other countries for treatment but this is not without difficulties and can be very dangerous. We’ve been able to give some funds but they will need more to get the children to safety to continue treatment. To find out more - www.ccll.org.uk/home

WHAT DO WE DO As there are Rotary clubs around the world it means that Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland have been able to quickly help the people of Ukraine via the Rotary Foundation Disaster Relief Fund for Ukraine. Because of our Christmas Shoebox appeal we have links with Moldova, which shares a border with Ukraine. This means it has been easier to set up relief in Moldova for those fleeing the war. Because we are dealing with a network of Rotarians, we know that donations will get will get to the intended recipients. We have also been able to fund 10 Shelter Kits designed by Shelterbox for their Ukraine Urgent Appeal Before the war in Ukraine we’d been supporting the Chernobyl Children’s Life Line appeal. They help children and young people who are suffering life limiting cancers as a result of their continued exposure to nuclear radiation from

We support a few international and national charities. Mainly we support local charities and concerns financially or with manpower. We give 12 local charities free stalls at the Festival of transport to raise their own funds. Look after yourselves & your families. Inspero Team xx

Some of the charities we’ve recently supported include:- The Royal British Legion Poppy appeal, Camrose Centre for the Homeless, Spotlight, Besom Basingstoke, The Pink Place & Blue Space, Mencap- Basingstoke, The Warren Youth Club, The Ark Riders’ Charity Ride ‘Bath & Back’. Loddon School, Basingstoke Young Carers, Basingstoke Academy of Dance, Disability Forum, NH Hospitals Staff Awards, St Michaels Hospice, local Scout group and many more. We continued to invest in Lend With Care.

Basingstoke Deane Rotary is a group of 35men & women from a wide variety of backgrounds. All live locally in the borough but some commute to work outside Basingstoke. Most joined Rotary to help others less fortunate, and they find Basingstoke Deane Rotary adds another extremely enjoyable dimension to their lives. If you would like to find out more about how we enjoy ourselves, just tune in to www.rcbd.org.uk to see what we have coming up, or contact Helen or Paul above to find out more. We think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Facebook:@RotaryBasingstokeDeane | Twitter: @RBstokeDeane

BASINGSTOKE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Our speaker back in May was Vincent Gradwell who began his horticultural career in 1962. He worked in Liverpool for 5 years before going to Wisley where he worked until he retired at the young age of 53. His horticultural talents were soon put to good use when he was asked by Saga Cruises to lead various garden tours overseas. He visited the Cape region of South Africa (S.A.) 5 times, always in October, and he told us that his talk on the flora of the area was one of his favourites. Interestingly that area also has some outstanding wildlife including the S.A. Penguin, Ostriches, Cheetahs and, if you are fortunate to see them, Whales that love to follow the tour boats. Kirstenbosch is perhaps the most well-known garden in the region which only grows plants of S.A. origin. With around 8500 species to choose from it’s a plant lovers paradise. The Protea is

well known as a S.A. plant which is pollinated by birds, beetles and even rodents.

The Cape Sugar Bird, as seen above, with its curved beak is well placed to extract the nectar from the depths of many plants. In particular its long, sharp beak is used to reach the nectar of

Vincent has also produced a book entitled “All Year: Plants in Flower”. To cater for all sizes of garden, it shows three plants that flower in each week through a year. Our next meeting in Kempshott Village Hall will be on Monday 15th August, at 7.30pm when Alan Horgan will be speaking on “Bugs for Bug Control”. Our meeting in July is a member’s only garden visit. Tanzania - a hidden gem! Part 3

We stocked up on provisions prior to leaving Arusha for this stage of the journey which was the start of the road trip into the Rhoatia valley. The roads in Arusha were in poor condition with open culverts and pedestrians and cyclists everywhere. However, I was pleasantly surprised when we joined the Ngorongoro road which is a recently completed modern road which snakes through the farms and banana tree plantations that line the road. It’s a vast improvement on the old dirt road which would take 3 days to travel between Arusha and Ngorongoro, now you can reach the crater in a day. And surprisingly there isn’t much traffic except some large tankers and the inevitable ancient hand carts and national buses. And cattle were being tended on the sides of the road – some things never change. Quietly tucked away on the top of a hill in rural Africa and, at the same time, located in the very heart of

the Northern Tanzania safari circuit this tented lodge breathes the atmosphere of true Africa and is built with indigenous hardwood and in traditional African style. The lodge is reached via 5km of deeply rutted dirt track which even the 4-wheel drive Toyota struggled with on occasions. My driver Martin said that there was an alternative route but it took longer and was worse! Lining the track were small holdings where local folk eked out an existence and children begged at the side of the road. The view at the top of the hill overlooking the rift valley was breath-taking and well worth the hour drive though. This site was also shared with an orphanage which was run by the local community and a state worker supported wholly by voluntary donations. I took the opportunity to visit and was greeted by children from 4 to 12 many of whom had no shoes or socks and lived in bunkered accommodation. Despite their background I was amazed at the standard of education with most speaking very good English and I was encouraged to help the children with their Maths homework and explaining on the chalk board in the classroom! Overall though a very humbling experience and one I will never forget on how community supports the less advantaged even in a 3rd world country such as Tanzania.

The trip into Manyara was along good roads and part of the Manyara biosphere is a national park well known for elephants, gibbons and giraffes. The lake is normally saline but recent extensive flooding has substantially changed the water balance and the pink flamingos have left the area. Local opinion is that it will take 25 or more years before the balance is returned. There are also hot springs in the lake and a salient reminder of the volcanic nature of the area. The animals wander freely and it is not unusual for delays of ½ and hour or more as elephants cross the road - patience is essential. On one occasion I witnessed a safari vehicle trying to ‘hurry up proceedings’ only to be false charged by a large bull elephant who took the view he was here first. The occupants of the vehicle were clearly shaken by the experience of an 15ft 9 tonne elephant and beat a hasty retreat when the road eventually cleared! Next month my trip takes me to the Ngorongoro crater and the northern Serengeti.

(CGH) PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP (PPG) NEWS

Patient Participation Group (PPG) Newsletter CGH News : CGH handling of appointment requests has fundamentally changed since 13th June. Patients can still contact CGH by telephone, e-consult, face to face or, via the new Dr.iQ App. However you contact CGH, each request will be reviewed by a team of 3 triage GPs, who will decide the most appropriate action, i.e. with a GP face to face, telephone consultation, nurse appointment, etc. Once triaged, you will be contacted with appointment details. This should dramatically reduce the time it takes to get an appointment with the appropriate medical practitioner. The PPG will be working closely with CGH over the next few months, whilst this new triage process is embedded. PPG News: we are delighted to report our monthly newsletter will now be featured on the Basingstoke Gazette Community News page, which enables us to reach many more CGH patients with information. We are pleased to have a lot of people requesting to join our PPG. In order to be representative of the full patient population, we would like to encourage young mothers and, more patients from the under 30 age groups. If you would like to join us, contact us at cghppg.co.uk and fill in the contact form. Our PPG representative, John Loots, recently sat on the expert panel at Maria Miller’s Community Chat on Health. As has been reported, a wide range of subjects were discussed. Many of the patient concerns

expressed at the meeting are representative of a nationwide problem with Primary Health Care being unfit for purpose. Dr. Claire Fuller, a top family doctor, was commissioned by NHS England to conduct a major review of the current system of Primary Health Care. Work is now being done to implement the recommendations made in this publication, aimed at joining up services provided by GP’s, Dentists and Pharmacists through integrated care systems. The full report can be seen on www.england.nhs.uk/publication-next-stepsIf you watched BBC Panorama on June 13th you will have seen interviews with members of our PPG. This is available to watch on BBC I Player. Active discussion is taking place with Beggarwood PPG and Practice Managers in respect of merging with CGH PPG. This will make our PPGs stronger by working together, and improve our efficiency for helping patients. Other News : the new, permanent Health Hub is now open in Festival Place from 1100 to 1700, 7 days a week, at the former Laura Ashley store. It offers a wide range of Health Care services to patients, and will help develop the NHS long term plan for Integrated Care Systems to improve patient access to services. Secure your motorbikes!! We have seen a recent rise in motorbike thefts in the Basingstoke area. An unsecured motorcycle, scooter or moped is an easy target for thieves as they are relatively lightweight and can be wheeled away and lifted into a waiting vehicle. Below are useful tips on how to keep your motorbike, scooter or moped safe from thieves.

Security tips

● If your motorbike or scooter doesn’t already have one, get a Thatcham or Sold Secure approved electronic immobiliser professionally fitted. ● Secure your motorbike to a solid object that can’t be moved. ● Audible alarms should be used where possible as this will generate more attention than the thief wants. ● Always put a steering lock on. ● When you are not using your motorbike or scooter, put it in a garage or a secure outbuilding with a fixed or ground anchor to secure it to inside the building. ● Don’t leave your garage open and make sure your vehicle is covered up, even when you are at home. ● Use tamper proof screws to secure your motorcycle number plate. These screws will prevent number plates from being stolen which are used on stolen vehicles to commit crime.

Locks

● Use a motorcycle chain, disc lock or cable and lock. Thread the chain through your frame, as many vehicles are stolen for parts. ● These should be secured to an immovable object (such as security loops or bars), which will provide a difficult barrier for the thieves to break through.

● Pay for the best quality you can afford and wherever possible choose Police Approved ‘Sold Secure’ gold standard products.

Safe parking

● Whenever possible, avoid leaving your helmet or other accessories on your motorbike or scooter or in a luggage space on panniers. ● If you are parking your bike, leave your seat open so that thieves do not break the seat lock if they target your vehicle and search for items to steal. ● Use a parking space built specially for motorbikes or scooters. They will have stands or security loops. ● Look for one that has achieved the police approved safer parking award-Park Mark. Find out more at: www.parkmark.co.uk

Security marking

● Marking individual parts of your bike makes it more difficult to sell on. It can also help police officers trace and return your bike if it is stolen. ● This is simple to do with forensic security marking kits. Choose 'Secured by Design' approved forensic marking products.

Of course it would be nice to know for certain that God existed, toHebeascended sure that there is a heaven after death andHe towas know thatand whatever before to heaven, they began to understand all that teaching explaininghappens, to them it's for the best - and many Christians myself included do know thathow these statements butoffor lotfinally of people they are held to about for God sure and about much He loves eachare andtrue every- one us. a They did begin to comprehend be true based on faith, trust, belief - rather than categoric certainty. ‘what He was really about.’ So why do some people have faith and others don't? Why are some people so willing to accept the apparently incontrovertible scientific wisdom Many of what are called resurrection appearances in the Bible involve eating. This is important because it of the day but not willing to trust that there is a God and that Hethat (orthe She) looking for us?body Is it-he just that some it easier to think tells us risenisJesus had a out real physical wasn’t some kindpeople of ghostlyfind apparition. in abstract terms - are less obsessed with objective proof? Perhaps those who have heard God’s call to faith are just more compassionate by Often the disciples didn’t immediately recognize Jesus-‘he was the same but different.’ The best analogy of nature and therefore more willing to forgive others, to accept others as they are and in so doing follow the teachings of Christ. Do we learn the this is when maybe you have had your hair done or get new glasses. Often people comment that there is teachings of Christ or are we all born knowing them and just need a catalyst of some sort to bring them into our lives? ‘something a bit different about you’ but they cannot quite place their finger on it.

St Thomas Aquinas a 12th century, Italian Dominican friar and priest, was a brilliant thinker who concluded many other things “To During this transition period, Jesus appeared to his disciples inamongst pairs, groups and once to 500 peoplethat in one one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, nothat explanation is possible” go. This tells us Jesus’ resurrection appearances couldn’t have been a hallucination. It is unlikely that 2

3 people, let alone 500 would have had the same hallucination! I recently heard a quote from a slightly more contemporaryorthinker, the wonderful Ian Briggs of this Parish who, when challenged to prove that God existed, countered “Can you prove you love your wife?” Transition is unsettling and often make us feel ill at ease - It was for the disciples, it is for us at St. Mark’s and it may well be for you. We wonder, “What we’ll do?” and “How we will manage?” Jesus promised to

I guess that at the end of the day you either have faith or you don’t and we may never know why some believe and some doubt. What I can say send his disciples a ‘helper’, which we call the Holy Spirit, to guide & support them and enable them to with absolute certainty is that knowing God and having Him in my life manage and findisa definitely way through.“good for me”.

Since the first lockdown in 2020, we at Kempshott Methodist Church – like many others – have had to re-think what we do and how we do it. Conventional church services were initially forbidden by the Government so we moved to holding services on Zoom We then extended that with a Wednesday morning Fellowship meeting on Zoom to enable people to talk to each other and think about various appropriate topics. Using Zoom proved so successful that we have been reluctant to throw it all away and go back to conventional services in the church. So, we are “mixing and matching” with a service in the church on the first Sunday of each month and Zooms on the other Sundays; the weekly Wednesday Fellowship also continues on Zoom. Other activities using the building are more or less back to normal. “Topspin” table tennis is on Friday evenings at 7.30; the Kempshott Dance Studio on Saturdays and Tuesday evenings and a new Kempshott pantomime group preparing for a production of Sleeping Beauty later in the year. All activities that are open for new people to join and enjoy. The church building has two halls. One larger than the other, with the use of kitchen facilities. These are available for hire for regular or one-off events, and we welcome any groups or people who might find these local facilities useful. You can contact us on 01256 468969 or 326081. We are also on Facebook at @kempshottmethodistchurch and the web at www.basingstokereadingmethodists.uk/churches/kempshott
