This year is already flying by - March already! The evenings are starting to draw out and the spring bulbs are showing their heads.

Someone recently mentioned that they were looking forward to the bulbs coming out in Heron Way, Buckingham Parade and Gracemere Crescent.

These are the result of the community bulb planting led by the Kempshott & District Residents Association several years back.

We are currently looking for volunteers to deliver the Kourier in Shipton Way & Abbot Close on the Berg, Goldfinch, Yellowhammer and Lapwing Close in Gabriel Park and also part of Redwing and Tern Close in Gabriel Park. If you can spare a little time each month, please give me a call on 01256 354282. Our retiring deliverers have done sterling work over many years and we would like to thank them for their regular efforts.

The next quarterly Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinators meeting will be taking place at Kempshott Village Hall on Monday 3rd April at 7pm. All currently co-ordinators are invited to attend, as is anyone who is interested in finding out more about starting a scheme.

Our April litterpick will take place on Sunday 9th April, meeting at 10am outside Old Down Hall (top of Kempshott Lane), weather permitting. Litterpickers and sacks provided.

Red Nose Day & Comic Relief The noses are back! The store will be hosting some wacky and funny fundraising events during February and March for Comic Relief. Comic Relief are one of our Corporate Charity Partners and, this year we’re looking to continue the tremendous support Comic Relief provides here in the UK. One charity within our community has benefitted with grants from Comic Relief: Inspero. So, your support via buying Scratch-Cards, Bags, Mugs and donations for our in-store fundraising, really does make a difference locally.

Watch out for some interesting fundraising in-store as we’ll be seeing some of our colleagues having their legs waxed, as well as some other exciting promotions.

There are nine noses to collect this year including a very special rare nose; Frankinose!

Charity Collections at Kempshott April 7th – Parkinson’s UK | April 8th – Basingstoke Wolverines April 9th – Hatch Warren Infants Our Local Charity of the Year; The Pink Place, host their final collection days as our charity partner during May. QUESTION: I am contemplating divorce. Will I be able to stay in the family home?

The impact of divorce upon someone’s family home and mortgage is probably the issue which worries separating couples more than any other. It is the area that demands the most careful legal expertise to resolve.

If you find yourself desperately unhappy within your marriage to the point where you wish to separate you should take note of the following key points:●● In any decision in relation to marital finances the court has to have first consideration to the welfare of any child of the family under the age of 18 ●● The court has to balance the parties’ respective incomes, earning capacity, property and other financial resources either held now or which they may reasonably be acquire in the future ●● The court has to consider the needs and responsibilities of the parties ●● The court has to consider the parties standard of living ●● The court has to consider the parties’ contributions ●● A spouse’s level of income will affect their mortgage capacity and consequently their ability to re-house/re- mortgage There are other criteria the court has to consider but in cases involving the family home on divorce however the above points tend to be the most important in judicial decision making. If at all possible the court wants children to remain in a securely owned home and not to be placed at risk of homelessness or being moved into short term privately rented accommodation.

A sale of the average home is seen as a matter of last resort while children are still at school unless any linked mortgage is no longer affordable. The family court has the power to decide the future of the family home. You may be able to retain occupation of the family home long after the marriage is at an end if you have school age children. In seeking advice, however, you must ensure your solicitor has all the facts about your situation.

Kung Hei Fat Choi Chinese New Year – The year of the Rooster.

We celebrated Chinese New Year by making Chinese Lanterns. The children made their lantern by folding a piece of red card in half they used scissors to cut straight lines , they cut out a handle and a picture of a Rooster and stuck all the pieces together using sticky tape to create their lantern.

The children tasted some Chinese prawn crackers, cucumber and boiled rice at snack time. The children enjoyed having a go at using chop sticks to pick up the rice.

We watched a short video of a Chinese tale about the ‘Great Race’ a tale in which animals raced against each other across a river, the animal to cross the river first became the next animal in line in the Chinese Calendar.

To end our celebrations we all joined in with a dragon dance in which the Children acted out being a dragon by dancing under some tunnels to Chinese music, the children took it in turns to lead using a junk model of a dragon’s head.

Winter To end our winter theme the children were set some home learning to work with their parents to make an ice pot.

They were given instructions to fill a small pot with water scented or unscented and add small objects or glitter and place in the freezer. The children brought their ice pot into preschool and an ice sculpture was created in a large tray by the children with help from staff. The staff talked to the children about what is going to happen to the ice. The ice sculpture was left out in the garden for the children to observe.

More fun was had at our parent and toddler group where they played with ‘winter’ themed activities. Cornflour mixed with water – sensory play.

The theme of winter continues to provide the basis for lots of crafts and activities, many of which are on display in preschool.

The children have been talking about birds and have made food to take home and hang up outside to help feed them during the winter months. They have also been looking at the book ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’, and have been acting out the story as well as doing bear-related crafts!

The ‘show and tell’ basket has been full of great items for the children to stand up and talk about, building their confidence and having fun at the same time …. Get your thinking caps on for X, Y and Z though!

Spring is on its way! The snowdrops are blooming in the woodland and we are looking forward to warmer playtimes soon, we hope!

Year 2 have already been out and about this year. They visited Tescos at Chineham last month and were able to see all the parts of the shop that are normally hidden from view.

They checked out the massive freezer, had a good look at the fresh fish and made fruit kebabs, ensuring that they ‘ate the rainbow!’ Thank you, Tescos, they had an exciting and interesting visit!

Year 1 have been learning about alliteration and have written some lovely rainbow poems.

They have been exploring the equipment in PE, thinking about ways to travel over it and to balance on it. They are expecting some very special visitors later this month, so watch this space!

Year R have had great fun meeting people who help us this half term. Our PCSOs came to school to tell us all about road safety and how to stay safe on the journey to and from school. A crew of Firefighters brought their fire engine to school!

The children sat in the engine and had a good look at all of the equipment and looked at each other through the thermal imaging camera, there is nowhere to hide! Then suddenly the engine was called out to a real fire, so with lights flashing and sirens blaring the engine raced off! Nobody missed their turn though, as the Firefighters came back when they had finished and told us all about it! We have also met Liam the Postman, Mrs Chase the Paramedic and are looking forward to a visit from Alex the Dentist – such a busy topic!

KEMPSHOTT JUNIOR SCHOOL Super start to the Spring term!

Sport has been well played this term, with pupils representing Kempshott Junior School in loads of sporty competitions.

These sports have included ‘Sparkling’ interschool under 11s rugby tournament with pupils playing superbly. We are top of the under 11s league in hockey and we have taken part in athletics and cross country too! One of our pupils managed to push herself and earn the right to represent Basingstoke in Hampshire competitions.

All of the Kempshott School community continue to raise money for Air Ambulance and have held a popular sweet sale (raising over £45) and are set to hold a book sale.

KSA continue their hard work to raise money for the school and have held an ever popular disco where children danced the night away! A Valentine’s cake sale was also held by the KSA…which was enjoyed by EVERYONE! This half term looks set to be just as busy as last half term. Year 3 are continuing their study of bugs and are looking forward to their trip to Tree House Study Centre and their Bug Ball. Year 4 are moving to Minstead for 3 days for their residential. They are set to study King Arthur and the round table. Year 5 have returned safely from Stubbington and are looking forward to producing coastal pictures and biscuits linked to Stubbington. Pupils will also be studying first aid to become experts (although hopefully they shouldn’t need to use Basingstoke it!). Year 6 are set to continue with their river studies and enjoy sewing class in design technology.

FEBRUARY 2017 IN THE WILDLIFE GARDEN The flower beds

If you have gaps to fill and would like to choose a butterfly friendly plant, Lunaria annua ‘Corfu Blue’ has smaller flowers than the usual honesty, held in loose panicles and may attract an orange-tip butterfly. The plant will only last a year but should seed around. It can also look good in a pot with Anemone nemorosa and pulmonaria.

Thinking about some larger garden wildlife which can face dangers at this time of year, hedgehogs can come out of hibernation from mid march onwards, so if you are going to be strimming or mowing any long grass, check it first for any garden wildlife that may be sheltering there.

Birds

The birds should be starting to pair off now. On the 19th March last I saw a pair of thrushes in my garden.

Song Thrush numbers are in decline, especially on farmland. This has meant that they are on the Red List, red is the highest conservation priority, with species needing urgent action. Other birds on the red list are starlings, house sparrows and mistle thrushes.

To help such birds the RSPBs conservation scientists have recommended that we consider wildlife friendly gardening to create better habitats for wildlife. Key actions are planting berrying shrubs, creating a pond and planting pollen rich flowers. Another way to help is to join a monitoring scheme such as Garden Birdwatch with the BTO : https://www.bto.org/ volunteer-surveys/gbw.

The pond

Newts are most active from March/ April. If you have newts in your pond it would be beneficial to plant some water forget-me-not as newts lay and hide their eggs on small broadleaved plants like these.

Newts eat algae and so will help with this common pond problem, and so to encourage newts to your pond if they are not resident yet, you could build a loose rockery for them to shelter and breed in.

Our community is important to us. Maintaining our coffee club is important to us. We can only do this with the help of volunteers, people like you. Our coffee club has been running for 20 years, it has become a thriving group but, without our volunteers we can not function.

Who can help? Anyone with a few hours spare can help.

How often would I be needed? That really is up to you. We have a rota and you let us know how regularly you can offer your time. Once a month, once every 6 weeks, once a week. It is your choice.

What would I be asked to do? Either drive (to collect and drop off our members, all local) Make the occasional cake.

Help to serve the tea and coffee.

Why should I volunteer? It’s a fantastic way to get involved in your community. Meet new people, make friends. It really is a rewarding way to spend a few hours.

Would I need a DBS check? Yes, we would do that through our organisation.

Where is the coffee club held? Basingstoke Rugby club, every Friday between 10 and 11.15. Volunteers normally arrive at 9.20 to set up.

We also organise outings throughout the year which you could be involved with.

This year we have been on the ‘Watercress Railway’ the ‘Basingstoke Canal’ and a trip to a garden centre. We have a Christmas lunch together and have more planned for next year.

Carbohydrates Do NOT Make You Fat! To lose weight it has become popular to cut carbohydrates from the diet, particularly bread!

People cut out carbohydrates from their diet and notice a drop on the scales almost instantly. From this, people decide it’s the carbohydrates that have been making them fat.

Can I let you into a little secret?

The reason you are truly losing weight is the decrease in calories… let me explain!

In the most basic form of science, energy balance is king. If you eat more calories than you burn in a day, you will put on weight. If you eat less calories than you burn in a day, you will lose weight. If you eat the same amount of calories as you burn in a day, you will stay the same weight.

Therefore, if you cut carbohydrates from your diet the chances are you will be eating less calories than you were before, which results in the initial weight loss.

Surely there is more to it than that, I hear you say? - of course! Here’s some more detail for you.

When we consume carbohydrates, they are stored in the muscle and liver alongside water.

When people cut out carbohydrates, they lose weight on the scales and lose some squidgy skin around their problem areas because there is less water being stored.

We live in a society where we want everything IMMEDIATLEY. So when we see weight loss on the scales after a week we think we have hit the jackpot, and carbs are certainly the enemy…

Unfortunately, this initial weight loss is water leaving the body, not fat!

When we begin eating carbohydrates again, the water weight is restored in the muscle cells. Back to square one, the weight goes back, you then feel demotivated, start eating more food for comfort and BOOM, the yo-yo diet recycles.

The bottom line?

There is no single food that makes you fat. If you overeat a certain food and put yourself in a calorie surplus, you will put on weight. If you cut out a food and put yourself in a calorie deficit, you will lose weight.

HOW SHOW DOGS SHOW THEY HAVE MUSCULAR PAIN

With Crufts just round the corner many people will be looking to get their Show dogs in tip top condition ready for the big ring.

Conformation showing can be an enjoyable and fulfilling hobby for both you and your dog.

The judge is looking to ensure that your dog fits the breed standard, has the correct breed conformation, is healthy, in good condition, has the correct temperament and character for the specific breed, and that the gait/movement is fluid with plenty of reach and drive.

A Show dog is often travelling long distances to attend shows and can be benched for long periods of time, meaning their muscles can become stiff and sore due to sitting or lying in one position in a confined space for several hours.

Dogs have around 700 muscles which account for around 45% of their bodyweight. These muscles pull on their 320 bones acting as levers to produce movement. If any one of these muscles has an injury or is restricted, movement will be compromised meaning your dog will not be showing to their best advantage.

Muscles can suffer injury for any number of reasons such as a slip, a fall or a collision with another dog. Often the injury goes undetected for a long period of time as the signs are so subtle but early detection – spotting any of the signs below – and seeking massage therapy by qualified massage therapist can prevent the injury worsening and leading to further problems. This is one of the many advantages of massage therapy.

By using massage to rehabilitate soft tissue injury we can release tight painful muscles, knots, trigger points and restrictive scar tissue. Massage improves the flexibility and elasticity of the muscle ensuring that the movement and performance is uncompromised.

Make hard water a thing of the past Although most of us put up with hard water in Basingstoke, many do not realise that you can do something about it.

Limescale furs up our heating systems, causing breakdowns, makes it more expensive to heat our homes and damages our appliances.

The other problem with limescale is the constant cleaning of showerheads, shower screens, stainless steel sinks. It can also aggravate skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis.

PROBUS LEARN OF "THE FORGOTTEN BATTLE" - THE BATTLE OF THE SCHELDT ESTUARY IN OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER 1944

Retired RAF Squadron Leader Chris Perkins MVO, from Kempshott, is himself a member of the Probus Club of Basingstoke the social organisation for retired professional and business managers. He gave a presentation to members about his recent activity tracing his old squadron's role in supporting the Allied Forces in their campaign to free Belgium and Holland from German occupation during WW2.

Based for many years at RAF Odiham, 33 Squadron is today more familiar to the residents of Basingstoke for flying the Puma troop carrying helicopter and Chinooks from other squadrons based at this station. However, during the Second World War it operated the Supermarine Spitfire in the ground attack role in the support of the army.

In the course of following the fortunes of both air and ground crews in their journey from the Normandy landings, Chris has uncovered an incredible story regarding a battle, almost completely overshadowed by the tragic events occurring at that time at Arnhem.

The Battle of the Scheldt was a military operation in northern Belgium and the south western Netherlands to secure the port of Antwerp, essential for allied re-supply use. The First Canadian Army was given the task of clearing the Scheldt area of German occupiers. Believing the retreating troops to be demoralised and lacking in fight, the initial attacks in September proved otherwise. Hitler had told every member of his forces dug in around the Scheldt estuary that they had to defend their positions to the last man and bullet. Their families would be held as retribution if they failed to do so.

Under the command of General Crerar, the First Canadian Army was international in character. In addition to Canadian infantry and armoured troops, it included the 1st British Corps, and the 1st Polish Armoured Division. At various times it also included American, Belgian, and Dutch units. The First Canadian Army in north western Europe during the final phases of the war was a powerful force, the largest army that had ever been under the control of a Canadian general. The strength of this army ranged from approximately 105,000 to 175,000 Canadian soldiers to anywhere from 200,000 to over 450,000 when including the soldiers from other nations. It was totally volunteer in nature.

The enemy opened the sea locks and flooded the whole countryside making what some historians considered to have been the most difficult battlefield of the Second World War. With flooded and muddy terrain and the tenacity of the wellfortified German defences made the Battle of the Scheldt especially gruelling and bloody. At the end of the five week offensive, the victorious First Canadian Army had taken 41,043 prisoners, but suffered 12,873 casualties (killed, wounded, or missing), 6,367 of whom were Canadians.

And what of 33 Squadron from RAF Odiham? At that time it was also an international unit and consisted of many volunteer pilots from around the world. The Spitfires were used to support the ground troops by attacking enemy positions. Unfortunately many pilots lost their lives. Chris located a number of these brave young airmen now resting in remote cemeteries. Two graves were for 22 years old New Zealander Warrant Officer George James Roney and that of Flt Lt Godfrey Argument a 23 years old Canadian.

WO George Roney took off at 15.00 on 6th October 1944 as part of a three Spitfire armed reconnaissance sortie. Good weather favoured the German air defence batteries and all three aircraft were shot down after encountering heavy flak. George went down with his Spitfire near the hamlet of Schoondjke. On 9th October 1944 his family received a “Missing on air operations” telegram. His remains were not recovered until 9th June 1948 as were his personal possessions which included a “penny” or tin whistle which he brought with him from the other side of the world as his family all played musical instruments. On 12th June 1948 WO George Roney was given a proper burial in the local cemetery where he is the only Commonwealth War Grave and has been adopted by children from the local school.

Kempshott Wildlife,

Green Space

Old Down & Beggarwood Wildlife Group At last there is a plan of works for the Beggarwood Community Facility which is as follows: precommencement works w/c 20 February; site set up w/c 13 March and main works start w/c 20 March.

February gave us some rather bleak winter days and during those weeks not much happened on either site – that’s wildlife, walkers and work parties. But not all doom and gloom, as the wintery spell did bring a rare sighting into Basingstoke. Eastrop Park had 8 Waxwings for a couple of weeks. Waxwings usually stay much further north, so these were exciting visitors. They were not bothered at all by the groups of bird watchers following them around. Seemed incongruous to see such colourful birds on a cold and dull wintery day (brilliant yellow tail-tip, white and yellow pattern on wing edge with bright red ‘blob’ above - like a drop of sealing wax – hence the name). On a cold but sunny day in February, there were some lovely sightings of Red Kite, Buzzard and Kestrel over Old Down. The Crows, Rooks and Jackdaws on Old Down do not seem to have been too disrupted by the Kennel Farm development; indeed on some days there are crowds of them on the meadow!

FUZZY DROVE CONSERVATION GROUP Many thanks to our supporters who took part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch at the end of January, and forwarded their results to us.

We thought it was a simple way of starting to create a record of the birds that Fuzzy Drove supports. We were very pleased with the diversity of birds spotted which included robins, sparrows, wood pigeons, blue tits, blackbirds, carrion crows, great tits, song thrushes, starlings, wrens, collared doves, chaffinches and something that we hadn’t seen before in Fuzzy Drove – bullfinches.

A pair of red kites also flew overhead.

We’re making good progress with our Autumn/Winter working parties – and have now successfully coppiced half a dozen hazels. At the most recent working party the ground was, at last, soft enough to do some planting, so we were able to get some hedgerow plants in the ground. We are aiming to create a diverse hedgerow understory the whole length of the Fuzzy Drove. This will stop large stretches being dominated by nettles (although we will keep some nettles as they are an excellent habitat for some species of wildlife). A greater variety of species of plants provides a better range of food for different species of wildlife. We will be interested to see in future birdwatches and other surveys whether we have been able to attract new species of wildlife to make the Drove their home.

We were very pleased to hear recently that we have been awarded a grant from the Four Lanes Trust. We had applied for funding to purchase more hedgerow plants, dormouse boxes and equipment to undertake a hedgehog survey in the Spring.

Our March working parties are on: Saturday 4th March and Saturday 25th March. We meet at 10am on Fuzzy Drove beside the entrance to Petrel Croft. Working parties are automatically cancelled if the weather is wet. Baden-Powel would have been proud! In the Old Orchard on 21st January we played host to eight members of Worting St. Thomas Scout Group and six of their parents. This was the first of four visits, the others are scheduled for March, June and September, the idea being that over one growing season the Scouts could see how the Orchard changed and developed and how this affected the tasks we carried out.

We had planned a whole series of activities for them; some ground work, some cutting and chopping. The weather, however, intervened and the day turned out to be the coldest of the year. It was -6ºC at 8.00am and, while it was bright and sunny, the air temperature rarely made it above freezing throughout the day. Consequently, the ground was frozen solid and our plans for clearing grass round fruit trees and digging out turfs had to be abandoned.

Plan "B" was wheeled into action and most of the day was spent clearing areas of overgrown bramble and coppicing hazel. By lunchtime, one group had cleared a large area of bramble and nettle, while the other was tackling two hazel stools. These were last coppiced by the Council in early 2006, just before the Kempshott Conservation Group was formed.

Why do people like chopping stuff down? Is it the before and after effect, so at the end of day they can see where they have been? The morning was taken up by removing bramble and holly so the Scouts could get to the base of the hazel stools. The stools themselves were then attacked and it was difficult to stop them. While the idea was to thin out some of the smaller branches to open up the stool, this is the aftermath.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, so it was a good start to the year. We originally planned to have three work party style sessions where they could learn wood craft, the cultivation and maintenance of fruit trees and seed collection. We then suggested that we hosted a session in late June along the lines of a "Bioblitz".

We did something similar last year with Hatch Warren Cubs, which was most successful. It involved teaching them about invertebrates and how to tell a bug from beetle and a fly from a bee. They went out and swept for invertebrates which we then identified.

For those of you who collect the cultivar blackberries, all we can say is, sorry, they had to go. In a few years they will recover, but recover they will. Meanwhile, there are other stands of blackberries around the site.

Work Parties. As our Work Party season draws to a close, why not come and join us and give it a try on one of the following dates. During 2017 we should, with any luck, see two or three new young trees in the park, replacements for eliminated Norway maples. The new trees will be more decorative, flowering to producing nuts or berries in a few years.

It has been a cold first couple of months of 2017 so let’s hope the additional Spring bulbs planted last year survived the squirrel predation.

Our neighbour at the top of Holy Ghost field kindly chopped back the leylandii on the boundary. We have asked the council to chip the arising branches at the end of February which will go into our path chippings stock for the next 12 months.

The old hedgerow by the tennis courts is in need of some maintenance - cutting back the ivy and renovating the dead hedging which fills some of the gaps. These are jobs we can do between March and June.

Last month as I wrote this piece for the Kourier it was snowing, guess what it is snowing again though hopefully not for long. However the weather did not stop our January meeting going ahead and we were delighted to welcome back most of our existing members together with a number of new ladies some of whom joined straight away.

Our speaker was Jo Cooke and she spoke about the not very well known Hoarder Disorder. This is when hoarding goes beyond the normal bounds of keeping things for possible future use and starts to impact on everyday life. We were surprised to learn that more men than women can be affected by this, and in many cases it is triggered by the loss of a loved one. It frequently results in a reluctance to let go of possessions that hold such special memories and Jo talked of how with professional help sufferers can learn to overcome their issues. On February 27th we welcomed a Blue Plaque guide to speak to us.

The speakers are already booked for the rest of the year and options for outings and activities as far into the future as December are under discussion. Our monthly Monday afternoon craft sessions from 2.00pm until 4.00pm will carry on as usual and although you might not be a crafter many of our members take part in other activities such as board games or scrabble. Perhaps during these cold winter months you just feel like a coffee and some company. If you are a WI member from any of our local groups please come along.

Part of the aim of the WI is to help forge new friendships and here at Kempshott you can be assured of a warm welcome and we hope that you will want to join us in 2017. For those who don’t know where we can be found we meet in Kempshott Village Hall, Stratton Park off Pack Lane at 2.30pm, usually on the fourth Monday of the month.

KEMPSHOTT UNDER FIVES PRESCHOOL March officially marks the beginning of Spring, so for the second half of our Spring term we’ll be doing a spot of gardening at Kempshott Under Fives.

We’ll be creating a garden centre at preschool where the children can plant and tend and help with their very own vegetable patch. We’ve also got some fun experiments planned to teach the children more about plants.

When we’re not in the garden we’ll be learning all about doctors and hospitals with lots of fun role-play listening to heartbeats and bandaging our patients.

Also coming up in March we’ve got our annual Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea – a treat for all of our Mummy’s who will be served tea and cake by their little ones.

With Spring in the air (and Easter eggs in the shops) thoughts of Easter are never far away. We’ve got some lovely Easter activities coming up too, including one of our favourites, Easter bonnet making!

A quick word of thanks to all those that attended our open day in February, we enjoyed showing our preschool to new families. And thank you to those that attended our Valentine’s disco, it lovely to see so many young children from the community attending our event, it was a huge success and was completely sold out!

BASINGSTOKE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

Our Speaker for January was a welcome return of Steve Austin and his subject was “Planning and Planting for the Year Ahead”. He left school at 16 and studied for a Diploma in Horticulture while having a position at Hillier’s in Romsey.

He then had a spell with Beth Chatto’s garden, and then onwards and upwards obtaining a RHS Master’s Degree with 1st Class Honours.

Many of us have a desire to redesign/revamp our gardens, but we find excuses for not so to do. Steve suggested that at the very least you should start with a design on paper, which is logical and common sense. How many of us have returned from a visit to a Garden Centre or Nursery with plants only to have a big problem as to where to put them. Steve suggested that you look at the plants you have disliked or that are in the wrong place, say hidden behind other larger plants.

Most of us try to have some co-ordination in our homes and so try not to have dozens of pots of different sizes, colours and materials in the garden. He went on to illustrate with slides how if you have the room you can make use of large plants which provide colour and interest in the garden in autumn and winter. Using the examples of Studley Royal, Longstock, Sissinghurst and some lovely planting on a disused railway track in Manhattan, USA he covered the different styles of garden from the Formal, to the Contemporary, the Informal, the Classic, to the Modern design.

Steve went on to illustrate these with a fabulous sequence of coloured slides which he augmented by describing the type of soil, location and likely problems to be encountered. Picking out something very unusual was a Ginko biloba a tall tree with sunny foliage. An interesting tree which survived the atomic bomb in Japan.

HER MAJESTY’S ROYAL MARINES CAME TO TOWN

£14k FOR THE LOCAL ARK CANCER CENTRE CHARITY.

With the Royal Corps of Drums and special guests The Chelsea Pensioners, the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines gave their usual stunning performance at our 9th Annual Charity Concert at The Anvil.

Some of the funds raised by this concert will be donated to 3 wonderful charities who support our armed forces at times of greatest need – Help for Heroes, The Royal Hospital Chelsea, and The Royal Marines Charity.

Amongst many local charities to benefit will be the local Ark Cancer Centre Charity which is looking to raise £5m towards a new state-of-the-art cancer treatment centre to serve our local community.

Everybody won. The Band got to perform to a full house in our magnificent Anvil Concert Hall. 12 Chelsea Pensioners were given a great day out. The 1200-strong audience was given an outstanding concert. The Anvil Arts Trust Charity received much needed revenue from a full house. And £15k profit was made for charities supported by your local Rotary.

The Ark is one of half a dozen local charities that Rotary is currently working with in partnership to provide support with both peoplepower and donation. A cheque for £14k was presented on stage at the concert to Merv Rees, Chairman of the Ark Cancer Centre Charity. This represented the extent of Rotary donations made to The Ark so far this year.

Our thanks to all the local folks who supported this event and hence these great charity causes. We hope you had a wonderful time, and that we see you again at our 10th concert next January.

NEWS FROM CRANBOURNE I’d like to introduce myself as Head of Cranbourne Business and Enterprise College. I joined the school after a year as Head of West Somerset College, a school which was judged as “Good” by Ofsted during my time as Head there.

We have had a very exciting and successful start to the year, with many community events. We hosted our successful Primary Athletic Cluster Event, attended by our junior schools and run by our amazing sports prefects and the wonderful Mr Kimber in conjunction with Mr Phil Jeffs, School Games Organiser, Basingstoke Schools.

On Friday 27 January 2017 we welcomed 90 students from the infant and junior schools within our Primary Cluster to our Aspirational Cluster Conference. The day was opened by Deji Tobias, a 100m GB sprinter, who spoke about his

aspirations to get to the Olympics and the successes and barriers he has had to overcome so far. This set a real appetite for the day and all involved took this inspiration into their sessions which were run by Headteachers from across the Cluster and included art, team building, music, careers and athletics.

Ambassadors from CBEC really showed their independence as they led the primary students around the College site and facilitated in the workshops. It was fantastic to see 5 – 16 year olds working together.

The day finished with another guest speaker, Simon Knighton, who shared his experiences of climbing Mount Everest.

This generated many questions from the children and really set a dream of, “Reach for the stars. Anything is possible.”

We are looking forward to excellent examination results this year, as well as Ski Trips and a French Expedition; not to mention a new swimming pool roof! We’re planning ever closer ties with the community as we welcome new students to Cranbourne. THE PRICE OF “FREE” The Editor of the Kempshott Kourier sent me an email to draw your attention to the concern of a local resident regarding the change of ownership of the website Streetlife to Nextdoor. Many website companies get purchased each day and the technology is either absorbed into the new provider or they have simply purchased the competing business for its user database. It appears that the multimillion pound deal to buy StreetLife has results in the users transferring their account to Nextdoor.

In itself you may not think this is a major issue but Nextdoor has a different privacy policy. It displays a directory including the full name and address for each member in the Nextdoor neighbourhood.

It appears to have upset a lot a people in that this policy was not made clear. As the BBC reported, “This woman was a member of a Streetlife community, as was her violent former partner.” Although she had kept her address a secret, he managed to obtain her address. It appears you can hide this but the default is to publish to everyone.

It seems the American owned Nextdoor sets the visibility to default and it would appear that US citizens are less concerned about their privacy.

Privacy is a topic I’ve written about numerous times and keep having to remind people that it’s not about “having something to hide” but this is a prime example where it’s better to control, or withhold, certain pieces of information to protect you entire digital life.

How much does “Free” cost In the example above it’s easy see how your data is being used, or published in this instance, but many pieces of free software harvest other data and use it. As my Nan used to say “There’s no such thing as a free lunch.”

Today the rule of thumb is, especially with online services such as social media, if there is no product then you are the product and therefore up for sale. Your data is VERY valuable.

Supermarkets were the first establishments to realise the value of data through loyalty cards. The biggest loyalty card success has to be Tesco who launched the Club Card in 1995. It was initially released to replace the Green Shield Stamps, a system designed to reward customers but this system did not collect customer data. By contrast, the ClubCard provided Tesco with an unprecedented level of detail into who its shoppers were and how they shopped.

Lord MacLaurin, the then chief executive of Tesco said “What scares me about this is that you know more about my customers after three months than I know after 30 years.”

In the US, Target (a discount retail store) was able to predict a pregnancy of a teenage girl by her shopping habits and sent over vouchers for discounts on baby wear. However, the girl had yet to break the news to her father who discovered the vouchers.

Google too have made a business out of collecting data and selling to those who wish to buy it. You would be astonished to find out what data Google keep about you. Just take a visit to https://myactivity.google.com/. Log into your account and you’ll see your search history, where you’ve been, what you’ve look at, what adverts have been served, etc. All of this information is so valuable, hence why Google are the primary source for such data.

It’s all in the small print Despite the collection of data, we’ve all agreed to it. When is the last time you read the End User License Agreement (EULA) or the terms and conditions, or the privacy statement for that matter?

Facebook collect all sorts of information and it’s no secret that there’s little privacy. For instance.

“We collect the content and other information you provide when you use our Services, including when you sign up for an account, create or share, and message or communicate with others. This can include information in or about the content you provide, such as the location of a photo or the date a file was created. We also collect information about how you use our Services, such as the types of content you view or engage with or the frequency and duration of your activities.”

In today’s technologically driven world, most people now own a smartphone and these constantly track you’re movements, usage, views etc and most people don’t mind but there’s going to come a time where this works against you.

One extreme example is that a French man is suing Uber (the on-demand private hire taxi company) for €45M after a bug in its application let slip his location to reveal an extra-marital affair.
