NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH NOTES Another month has gone by and while lockdown is being eased a little bit, we all need to use common sense to keep not only ourselves , but everyone else safe and well. We must all continue to be considerate to each other.

Whilst our police continue to be extra busy with all of the duties that COVID-19 has added to their work, crime updates continue to be published on Alert and the constabulary website.(https://www.hampshire.police.uk) I have also added many press releases to the BDNW website (www.bdnw.org.uk/v3). Sadly at the time of writing this, very few of the latest updates seem to be being read. I have also put the latest Crime Prevention News onto the BDNW website as well and it includes lots of helpful information on subjects. The items covered are; TV Licence Email scams | How to properly lock Upvc doors ( A major contributor to burglary), Victim Care, HINWA - County website/how to join NW | On Line radicalisation. Reporting suspicious emails ( 300+ scam websites taken down & 160,000+ suspicious emails sent in) Businesses against scams | Immobilise In terms of Alert, Basingstoke has 4116 total users, 30 who have joined in the last month and 238 Alerts have been sent out. Of the 463 NW schemes believed by BDNWA to be active, only 167 are actually registered and visible on Alert. County wide only 1.44% of persons are engaged with Alert and 4.70% of households are covered. Despite this and the virus, BDNW continues to grow and I have approved another four new schemes in the town area in the last few weeks. Recently, whilst out and about, keeping to social distancing, several people have spoken to me about behaviours which many would question. Unfortunately a lot of concern is about cyclists on footpaths which are just that - ie for walkers. Legally you must have the landowners permission to ride on ANY footpath and this also applies to bridlepaths. Incidentally whilst it is illegal to sell a new cycle without a bell or similar warning device, owners do not have to keep it fitted or use it. The police will always take action if any “ageressive cycling” is reported to them. I have also been told that walkers have been seen off designated paths, especially in local farmers fields. Please be considerate and stick to the recognised paths. On my regular exercise walks around Old Down Park, I have recently noticed several dead rabbits (or maybe they are hares). These have been spotted on the path around 50 metres from the back of the hall. These are an obvious health hazard and I’ve no ideas as to how they are dying or being killed. The wildlife group has expressed concern about litter and dog poo in the park. This may be down to the park having increased use by people who are not regulars, so as I’ve said before, please be considerate and don’t spoil the environment by your carelessness. Whilst virus restrictions continue and I’m working from home, my police email is still not available. I hope to be volunteering back at Parklands very soon, but until then please send feedback, comments etc to brian.adams@bdnw.org.uk where it gets forwarded to me, but please allow a few days for me to reply. Kind regards

Brian

Kempshott Schools Kempshott Infant School

It has been wonderful to welcome some of our Year R children back to school. We are all very sad that we are not yet able to welcome everyone back. However, all the children, whether in Year R bubbles, in Key Worker bubbles or learning at home on Seesaw are enjoying a fantastic whole school topic – Pirates! The children, whether at school or at home, have been making pirate hooks and hats, halving the pirate treasure, going on treasure hunts and all the while talking like a pirate as well! We really love seeing and commenting on all the great work on Seesaw, and enjoy staying in touch with the children in this way. We would like to say a huge thank you to our amazing families who are working so hard to keep the children learning at home – Smileys on all your cards! We are also looking forward to Zoom meetings with the children and parents who will join us in September. It will be lovely to say hello and to tell them all about their new school and classrooms. So, things continue to be very different, but our amazing, resilient children and their fantastic, ingenious families continue to Keep Calm and Carry On! Stay safe and take care.

With love from Kempshott Infant School

Kempshott Junior School News

Kempshott Junior School have continued to support children of key workers and have welcomed back Year 6 pupils. Year 6 have been learning about the Mayans. Pupils have experimented with why they used rubber balls for their sport, designed their own Mayan floating garden, investigated how they moved heavy blocks to make pyramids and have designed Mayan masks, created pen and ink Mayan patterns! Over next few weeks They are going to look at Mary Anning and Charles Darwin as part of evolution topic. Keep smiling and stay safe.

KEMPSHOTT UNDER FIVES PRESCHOOL E: kempu5@aol.com | www.kempshottunderfives.co.uk | T: 07951 660401

After nearly three months of being open for only essential key worker children, Kempshott Under Fives were delighted to be able to welcome back more children at the start of June. It’s so lovely to see our children back at preschool again, and the return has been a great success. The children have adjusted back to the old routine brilliantly and are all superstars at washing their hands. We have of course been making the most of the good weather and have been busy with lots of outdoor activities. Our topic this term is “growing”, so the children have been planting lots of fruit and vegetables and making our very own veg patch. Children who have not yet returned to preschool have all been sent packets of seeds so they can share their growing with us on our zoom catch-ups. And in the warm weather, preschool always needs fun water play activities in the garden too – so the children have created a water trail that starts at the bucket with the big hole in! We have also created our own snack shop. The children have real money and need to chose their snack and pay for it with their coins. We are encouraging the children to use their numbers and decide if their snack costs one more or one less. In a few weeks time our older children will be leaving us for their next adventures at primary school, so we are busy planning their Graduation. Even though we can’t celebrate in our usual way, we won’t be saying goodbye to our children without making their last day special. And for our children who are still unable to return to preschool, we are continuing to stay in touch via our online means of Tapestry, email, zoom calls and Facebook. We are also all singing our new song every week: Twinkle, Twinkle, little star, Send my love wide and far, To my family, to my friends, See you soon when lock down ends, Twinkle, Twinkle little star, Send my kisses wide and far. If you are looking for a preschool place for the next academic year, we still have spaces available - we are currently reserving places with no commitment until we are fully open for preschool visits and show-arounds. For a virtual tour of our lovely preschool please take a look at our Facebook page @ Kempshott Under Fives. We are located in St Mark’s Church on Homesteads Road, Kempshott, and are open Monday to Friday 8.30am-3pm during term times (closed Tuesday mornings). We have a wonderful, homely main room to play in and a big garden. We take children from the age of 2 years until they start primary school and have spaces available from September 2020. If you would like to apply for a space, or if you’d just like to learn a bit more, you are welcome to contact our Manager, Melissa, at kempu5@ aol.com. We will send you an application form to register, and will invite you for a viewing in person as soon as we are able.

Kempshott Wildlife,

Green Space

KEMPSHOTT WILDLIFE, GREEN SPACE Old Down & Beggarwood Wildlife Group

Both Old Down and Beggarwood seem quieter as many people are now back working but sadly our children have not been able to return to their places of education – this crisis is so very hard on them. Hopefully though, you are all still finding time to enjoy the two sites. We are now into summer and there are so many lovely wildflowers and insects to see, both sites being rich with many different species. Sadly the Council has mowed flat every verge and open space in the area (a tidy-up I suppose – but does it look any better?) thus we have lost those lovely flowers, which were at the height of their beauty, and also lost is the food source of insects which is so important to the ecology. Early summer is the time to spot orchids. The Pyramidal orchid and the Common spotted orchid are found on both sites and this year on one of the sites a couple of Bee orchids have appeared – so called because the centre looks like a bee has landed. This is a totally unexpected new species on the site and very exciting.

Pyramidal Orchid

Black-tailed skimmer

A very surprising sight on Beggarwood in late May was a female black-tailed skimmer (photo above). This is a fairly large species of dragonfly and usually found near water. The male has the black tail – as is often the case the female is not so dramatic in appearance. There is no water in the near vicinity but perhaps there are sufficient garden ponds to attract. A very big thank you to everyone who has taken the trouble to clear litter from the two sites. It is so much more enjoyable to walk around a litter free area. Work Parties – We were hoping to restart in late June but unfortunately the Council is reluctant to give permission because of social distancing and PPE issues. So still none at the moment but perhaps we might be able to start next month. Please check our website and Facebook page (Old Down and Beggarwood Wildlife Group) for information on when that might be. Please also look at our Facebook page for regular photos of the sites and the wildlife. Internet: www.olddownandbeggarwood.org.uk

FUZZY DROVE CONSERVATION GROUP Due to the current pandemic Fuzzy Drove Conservation Group are not currently running any working parties and it may be several more weeks until we are able to return safely. Updates will be on our Facebook page and web site so please look there for more information. I am writing this at the beginning of June with a few spots of rain falling, something that has not happened for many weeks. Our gardens and trees are in need of some decent rain, but the trees in Fuzzy Drove seem to be coping at present and hopefully the majority of the native plants along the Drove will survive the very dry hot spring we have experienced this year. In this country threats to woodland, wildlife and the wider environment are growing and our trees and woods face a challenging combination of pressures, including climate change, inappropriate development, pollution, a growing population in a predominantly urban environment and attack from deadly tree diseases and pests. Ancient woods and trees in particular are some of our most valuable natural assets. They are irreplaceable and home to many vulnerable and threatened species. Fuzzy Drove (although not “ancient” in conservation terms) and the other woodland areas in and around Basingstoke are such special places they should be treasured and greatly cared for.

CONSERVATION and AND Conservation NewsNEWS for FOR JulyJULY

Between 1am and 4am our street lights go out which is a great benefit to all nocturnal wildlife in our area especially insects which are extremely important to the entire ecosystem. We are fortunate to have so many mature English Oak trees in the Drove, particularly when you consider that Oak trees support more life forms than any other native tree. They are host to hundreds of insect species, supplying many birds with an important food source. Flower and leaf buds of English oak are also the food plants of the caterpillars of purple hairstreak butterflies. These are difficult to spot as they spend most of their time high in the tree canopy, but here is a photo. Let us know if you spot one!

English Oak is the second most common tree species in the UK, after birch. It’s especially common in deciduous woods in southern and central Britain. In fact, it’s so widespread that it has assumed the status of a national emblem. So enjoy the shade that the Fuzzy Drove Oak trees give you and marvel at the wildlife each of the oaks sustains and supports when you use the Drove this July. For details of all we do and how you can get involved please go to our website www.fuzzydrove.co.uk or get in touch at contact@fuzzydrove.co.uk or find us on Facebook.

Orchids Galore! While the hot, dry May caused some plants stress, it didn't do the orchids any harm at all. By early June masses of Pyramidal Orchids (pictured left) were showing their heads in Down Grange Meadow. As they were so early, they could be seen amongst the Rosebay Willowherb, before the Willowherb had a chance to grow up and smother them. In a good year orchids can pop up in the most unexpected places. In early June, there were reports of one at Buckingham Parade. A quick check revealed a Pyramidal Orchid (pictured right) in the green patch between the car park and High Drive. Three or more years ago, we received an excited call from someone in the Viables complex reporting what turned out to be a number of Bee Orchids, sadly not reported since. Orchids need the right mix of underground bacteria to flourish. As fine as dust, their seed gets distributed by the wind and can end up a considerable distance from the parent plant. After many years of encouraging the Council to stop cutting grass so frequently where it’s not necessary, two things have happened. Firstly, a trial project of doing just that has started in Hatch Warren and Beggarwood and, secondly, the Covid-19 lockdown meant that virtually no grass was cut mid-March to the end of April when the weather was perfect for early flowering wild flowers. This resulted in a wonderful explosion of colour and plant life all over the borough. In June, they started cutting the grass again…………...

June is bustin’ out all over… including the butterflies! In a normal year, butterflies are subject to the "June Gap". This gap is between the presence of those that overwinter, such as Small Tortoiseshells, Brimstones, Commas, etc. and those meadow species that start flying at the end of June, such as Meadow Browns. This year the "Gap" occurred in the very dry May. By early June there were Skippers and Marbled Whites out in Down Grange Meadow. While Old Down is renowned for its Small Blues, a relatively scarce butterfly (pictured right), we are very pleased to say that a colony is now well established on the meadow, the third year we have been able to report a growing colony on our own patch.

PROBUS KEEPS IN TOUCH It’s a good job the coronavirus did not occur twenty or even ten years ago. Just image the difficulty of

keeping in touch with each other. Yes, we had a telephone; most homes had a landline and many people had mobiles but not like the number today. And of course the Royal Mail had a reliable postal service. I don’t know if the telegram service still operated had it been necessary to contact someone in an emergency. Today it’s different. How times have changed. Technology has come to our rescue. Virtually everyone has a mobile phone and a large majority a home computer with an internet connection. This latter aspect is the main reason that today, although being physically isolated, we can keep in contact, verbally with a phone, in written form with the immediacy of emails and visually with the latest wiz bang thing the use of WhatsApp on our mobile phone or Zoom or Microsoft’s Meet type of technology. As the BBC often says when a brand name is mentioned that other products are also available. It’s a sign of embracing today’s times but the use of technology is how the members of the Probus Club of Basingstoke keep in touch both individually and in groups. Today every member has some sort of computer type device that has an internet connection so the use of sending out group emails is common practice. But Probus is a social organisation and the usual business style meetings, the many social gatherings and trips are missed during this lockdown period of our lives. It was considered that it was essential that some form of regular contact was necessary. A clever design of a phone contact system was devised which meant that each member of the committee had a rotating nominated list of members to call each week. The plan is working excellently so far and it is hoped that by the early part of July each committee member would have spoken to every member. On a communal basis the use of Zoom has been so successful that rather than the freely available forty minutes transmission time it was soon decided to buy a year’s subscription which means the system is available for any amount of time over the next 12 months. What made this an easy decision was the ability to conduct the formal committee meetings following the agenda just as though the meeting took place around a table. The members have been involved with general meetings via Zoom and also with a quiz afternoon with several spouses helping the men in their lives achieve enhanced results. More such quizzes are planned. Investigations are being followed of using this technology to provide a speaker to replace the ones that are booked at our monthly lunch meetings. Probus Club members may be retired and perhaps some have the occasional physical problem but to a man they are bright eyed and bushy tailed. They have all risen magnificently during these unprecedented times to prove they can assimilate new things. They are certainly not technophobes. See www.probusbasingstoke.club for information about the Probus Club of Basingstoke.

BROWSING FOR PROPERTIES

Since the housing market reopened in May, Zoë Baxter who is a lawyer working in the Residential Property team at Phillips Solicitors incorporating Brain Chase Coles, has seen a significant increase in enquiries. Zoë said: “As of Wednesday 13th May some of the restrictions on the property sector were relaxed allowing for Estate Agents to open, viewings to take place, surveys to be undertaken, removals to happen and building sites to re-open – all following the social distancing rules of course.” Since the easing of restrictions, popular property websites have seen an increase in traffic from visitors. Zoë notes that Rightmove reported that on Wednesday 13th May, visits to their website increased dramatically with their figures at a level that was in fact 4% above the same Wednesday in the year before and 111% up on the week before. “It seems that many of us have been trapped in our homes for several weeks dreaming of a new place to live and perhaps have discovered new priorities for what is important in our new home,” said Zoë. “Here at Phillips Solicitors the Residential Conveyancing Department has remained open throughout the crisis and are pleased to note an increase in requests for quotations and new enquiries. It remains to be seen how the property market is affected in the long run by the Covid-19 crisis and if house prices drop by any significant level.” Our conveyancing lawyers are continuing to work hard to make sure risks are minimalised, contracts are kept to and your transaction is as seamless as possible during this difficult time. We have taken steps to continue to strive to provide a highly personalised service to you and are able to use various video platforms such as Zoom, Skype and FaceTime, so we can get in touch with you and other parties involved in the sale, regardless of location. BASINGSTOKE CITIZENS ADVICE Registering a death

The registration of a death is the formal record of the death. It is done by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages and you will find the address of the nearest register office in the telephone directory. When someone dies at home, the death should be registered at the register office for the district where they lived. If the death took place in hospital or in a nursing home it must be registered at the register office for the district in which the hospital or home is situated. In England and Wales, if it is convenient, you can go to a different office to register the death and the details will be passed on to the correct office. You should check the opening hours of the office you wish to go to. Some offices have an appointments system. A death should be registered within five days but registration can be delayed for another nine days if the registrar is told that a medical certificate has been issued. If the death has been reported to the coroner you cannot register it until the coroner's investigations are finished. It is a criminal offence not to register a death. The death should be registered by one of the following (in order of priority): ● a relative who was present at the death ● a relative present during the person's last illness ● a relative living in the district where the death took place ● anyone else present at the death ● an owner or occupier of the building where the death took place and who was aware of the death ● the person arranging the funeral (but not the funeral director). You cannot delegate responsibility for registering the death to anyone else. You must take with you the medical certificate of death, since the death cannot be registered until the registrar has seen this. If possible, you should also take the person's NHS medical card and birth and marriage certificates. The registrar will want from you the following information:● date and place of death ● the full name of the person (including maiden name) and their last address ● the person's date and place of birth ● the person's job ● the full name, date of birth and job of a living or dead spouse or civil partner ● if the person was still married, the date of birth of their husband or wife ● whether the person was receiving a pension or other social security benefits.

CHARITY COMMUNITY RESPONSE Since the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis Inspero have been a community response

outreach charity serving the Beggarwood, Buckskin, Hatch Warren and Kempshott areas of Basingstoke. As we are a food education and well-being charity it is a natural progression for Inspero being a grassroots organisation that works with local people in the communities of Basingstoke. We have to say a big thank you to our wonderful volunteers who have really stepped up when local people needed them. We set up a Food Hub shop in the Ridgeway Community Centre in Buckskin, now open twice per week and also deliver free healthy food parcels in the four areas as well as other wards where Inspero families live in Basingstoke supporting around 550 people per week. As part of this service we also deliver around 50 healthy hot meals per week to vulnerable older people and families who need the support. It’s been great to turn around approximately 3 tonnes of surplus food a week from our supermarket collections that would be otherwise wasted food to benefit local people. In addition to this Inspero spend significant amounts of funds on food for food parcels

every week, including contributing organic vegetables from our community garden when harvested to our healthy food parcels. It has been a challenging time we have had to implement new policies and procedures for all of our Covid-19 activities and it is vital that we keep all of our volunteers healthy during this period so we issue “Care packages” to all of them including PPE; masks, nitrile gloves, anti bac gel/wipes, vitamin supplements and organic veg. Our younger volunteers are out collecting prescriptions, doing food shopping and delivering for older more vulnerable people, some shielding due to health conditions and some self-isolating. It has been so lovely for our volunteer team to check in with older people as part of our well-being check-in service, especially those who live alone for a chat and to see how they are doing, coping with lockdown. Our gardening volunteer team have been busy keeping our community garden going at Kempshott Village Hall, where a lot of organic produce is grown, to date we've been able to add organic carrots, asparagus, broad beans and garlic to food parcels for local people. It’s been thrilling to move our cooking classes online using Zoom and families are really enjoying them. Our aim for the classes is inviting young people to learn valuable cooking skills and cook the dinner for their family that evening, Mum’s and Dads are welcome to join in. If you are interested in joining please email info@ inspero.org.uk to express your interest. Going forward we will developing our community garden more, we have built a lovely new summer house, courtesy of Sainsbury’s Kempshott who donated the summer house, part of the 150 centenary celebrations where Inspero was a chosen charity and thank you to Lee & Colin from Trinity Design & Build Ltd in Brighton Hill who did a grand job in building our ‘new shed’. It will be so lovely especially for our older members to relax in comfort and have a cup of tea in all weathers. We realise it has been a difficult and challenging time for everyone and hope that our service this last few months has brought some hope and happiness to people. Best wishes, Inspero xx

MEDIA MISINFORMATION AND MATHEMATICAL MAYHEM At the time of writing we are 3 months into lockdown and set to have the restrictions lifted but one thing that I notice on both online media and social media is a complete abuse of information based on numbers and mathematical models with the clear agenda to strike fear into the public.

To be clear, I’m not an expert virologist, epidemiologist or pandemic specialist. Neither am I a supreme maths expert but one area that I consider to be a specialist is computer programming and database programming. I’ve been involved in large financial databases that drive websites to create numerous performance graphs. I also get involved in working with motion control systems that perform automated tasks and communicate with external systems in order to collect and process data. My level of involvement requires that I interpret the requirement and then use analytical and logical skills to create software to meet the requirement. This requires breaking down the prerequisites of a project and creating specifications that follow logical procedures to fulfil the end goal. So, it’s been rather frustrating to see complex issues oversimplified to the extent that relevant information has been omitted or distorted to present a grimmer situation. This problem starts at school. There are many adults that didn’t particularly enjoy maths at school, usually because the curriculum moves on to the next subject before the basics are understood. When I look back to my school days, most people fell into two camps. Those that loved maths and hated English and the those that loved English but hated maths. A situation that results in individuals falling into one camp and being disinterested in the other. The difference is that people are quite happy to announce that they are “rubbish at maths” but you never hear anyone proclaim with pride their inability to read. To me, maths is as essential as reading however, in my experience, the education systems forces teachers to teach more complex maths without attaining a good understanding in the basics. I’ve always compared maths to a magic trick in that once you know the secret, or the process, then you have that light bulb moment, but many children are moved onto advanced maths without a fundamental foundation in the basics. I am also amazed how many people do not understand the fundamental relationship between fractions and decimals. It’s this level of innumeracy (mathematical illiteracy) that has led to such confusion around the interpretation of COVID-19 data the media share. The principal reason is that much of the data presented is either taken out of context or the comparisons are not directly relatable. A prime example from the media are headlines like “The UK now has the most deaths in Europe”. Whilst true, there are many factors why the UK has high deaths. During the early stages of lockdown, deaths in Italy and Spain surged ahead but the comparisons to these countries (or any other country) is not easy. For a start, the UK has a population of 66.6 million people. Spain has 49.94 million and Italy has 60.36 million. If we were to simply take a percentage of the population then the UK would naturally suffer from more deaths. By the same logic, Germany would have more deaths than the UK but that isn’t the case. The reality is there are many factors determining numbers and associated deaths. Population size is one influence, but we must also consider factors such as population density as more people in smaller areas contribute to the spread. Ethnic diversity also plays a part as Black and Minority Ethnics (BAME) have a 2-4 times greater risk than white people. London saw high numbers due to a high population of Black Caribbean people in Croydon along with other London boroughs. Looking at a heat map of COVID-19 deaths, it’s obvious to see that more deaths occurred in places with more people. This explains why most deaths in Italy occurred in more densely populated areas. To complicate the issue further we need to consider other aspects like social compliance. It’s well known that Germans follow rules. If they are told to stay in and isolate, they do so. Whereas in the UK, when lockdown seemed inevitable what did the British public do. They all went shopping on the same day. Did this contribute the spike in cases? Another fundamental flaw through this whole process is the “science”. Many people believe we must “follow the science” but the truth is science is an interactive process. At a very basic level you begin with a question. You formulate a hypothesis against which you test and gather data from which a conclusion is drawn. The process can be hit and miss and normally repeats until a satisfactory answer is derived. COVID-19 hit the world so fast and quickly that the whole world expected science to have an answer…and quickly. But this isn’t Star Trek. It’s the search of a quick answer that potentially caused more harm than good. A fundamental part of the scientific process is peer review. Peer review is an essential step in self-regulation as other scientists in the same field review the work in order to validate the quality of the outcome. The principle reason we entered locked was down to a report based on a computer model by Professor Neil Ferguson, a director at Imperial College, London. He predicted that the UK would see around 510,000 deaths without lock down. When creating a hypothesis, certain assumptions are made. Sadly, those assumptions were wrong. For instance, in 2009, one of Ferguson's models predicted 65,000 people could die from the Swine Flu outbreak in the UK — the final figure was below 500. It’s important to understand that the COVID-19 model was never peer reviewed. Has lockdown caused more collateral deaths than COVID-19? The evidence says yes but it’s going to be some time until we really understand the extent. I suspect we will all look back at 2020 in the years to come and see it as a very odd period in our lives.

The aim of a Sudoku puzzle is to fill in the grid so that each row, each column and each box contains all the numbers from 1 to 9. Transition & Transformation

Hello. My name is Debbie Veel. I am one of the Licensed Lay Ministers (LLM’s or Readers as they are sometimes known) at St. Mark’s church. LLM’s are not ordained, so we don’t wear a dog collar, but we can do much of what a vicar can do with some notable exceptions. We can’t bless the communion wine and bread; we can’t marry people nor do we baptise anyone. Interestingly enough, we can lead funerals. Other than that we preach, lead worship, prayer and mid-week groups and we are involved in the running of the church. I think worshipof services please follow the link below: it as being a bit like being a deputy head of a school.

https://www.saintmarks.org.uk/stmarksathome.htm I am writing this month because, as you may or may not know, the Rev. Kelvin and Jane Taylor left St. Mark’s at the end of May. They had been with us for nine years and we are sad to see them go. Many exciting

It is a time of change and transition for them and for the church.

It may well be a time of change and transition for you too. You may be changing job; maybe moving house; having a new baby; getting married; leaving home for the first time to go to university or to travel. There may also be some less pleasant changes happening in your life- divorce, unemployment, bereavement.
