The weeks leading up to Christmas were spent in preparation for the Nativity, a much-anticipated event! All the children have a part to play and sing the carols they have pre-pared with great gusto! The big man himself also makes appearance, arriving by horse-drawn carriage – a truly magical experience for all the children.

As well as getting ready for Christmas celebrations, the regular routines of the pre-school continue with the opportunity for daily show and tell. Each week, the children are encour-aged to bring in an item that begins with the letter of the alphabet for that week. This en-courages the children to speak confidently in front of their peers as well as expanding their vocabulary and letter recognition. Once we get to X, it gets to be somewhat of a challenge!

Well, everybody’s been out and about this month at Kempshott Infant School. Year R have been trekking through the woodland with Percy the Park-keeper, Year 1 have visited St Mark’s Church and Year 2 have been to the moon!

Percy Day in Year R was great fun. If you had been in our woods that day, you certainly would have had a big surprise!

There were squirrels, rabbits, foxes and all kinds of woodland animals! They made a tasty fruit salad for Percy, (which they then ate themselves!) and then planted a crocus to take home.

Year 1 really enjoyed their visit to the Church. They received a passport on arrival which they then had to get stamped at each station in the Church. They found out all about the Christmas story from the perspective of the Kings, the Shepherds and others. They did some craft, listened to stories and watched a video. They even had a drink and a biscuit! What a lovely visit!

Space Day in Year 2 was fantastic! The children made a NASA ID badge and wore space helmets and moon boots! They designed a chair for an astronaut teddy bear which would keep him safe on the journey and also be comfortable, as it’s a long way to the moon! Space food was delicious and sustained them as their mission was to fly to the moon and explore the surface. Happily, they all completed this task and made it home safely to Earth!

Well, Christmas has well and truly taken over! Christmas Carols echo around the school as the children practise for their plays and, no doubt, think about their Christmas lists! Glitter, sparkle, cards and calendars, lots of things to make and share. Everyone at Kempshott Infant School would like to wish all of our families and neighbours a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful, healthy and exciting New Year!

Happy New Year!

Where did 2019 go? 2019 finished with super celebrations at Kempshott Junior School including our KSA Christmas Fayre, Christmas jumper day, present room, carols around the tree and whole school Christmas production. The Christmas production was ‘Scrooge, A Ghost of a Chance’. It was performed over 3 matinees and 3 evening performances which put everyone in the Christmas spirit.

Our Charity of the year, Spotlight, continues to support the community of Basingstoke and our school. We have raised over £500 for Spotlight already and we are really enjoying working with this wonderful charity.

AUSPICIOUS CEREMONY AT BASINGSTOKE MASONIC LODGE Approaching the centenary since the foundation of the Elvetham Masonic Lodge meant that the installation of their 100th Worshipful Master was a significant chapter in its history.

The Elvetham Masonic Lodge was formed in Hartley Wintney in 1920 to meet the needs of local residents due to difficulties in travelling to lodges in Basingstoke or Blackwater. Its Lodge was situated in Hartley Wintney until planning constraints forced a move in 1993 to the Basingstoke Masonic Centre. As a consequence of this move today its membership comes from the wider Basingstoke area.

Roger Robertson was duly installed as Master of the Lodge at an impressive ceremony held at the Masonic Centre in Victoria Street Basingstoke followed by a Celebration Dinner.

The new Master of the Lodge is anxious to continue with the national policy of a more open understanding of what Freemasonry is all about as it is one of the world’s oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations. There are more than 250 Lodges in Hampshire alone with in excess of 9,000 members and 5 of those Lodges meet in the Basingstoke Centre.

Worldwide Freemasonry membership stands at more than 6 million men.

Rogers’ goal is to dispel many of the myths that abound around freemasonry.

“It has never been a secret organisation, just an, ‘organisation with secrets’ and prior to WW2 Freemasonry was completely open and held regular Church Parades dressed in full Regalia”. He explained that Freemasonry instils in its members a moral and ethical approach to life. “While we use ancient stonemason’s customs and tools as allegorical guides in our ceremonies, we do have a modern approach to life and these days most things can be seen on the internet. Yes, it should be viewed as an enjoyable pursuit but membership does aim to make good men better.”

In terms of Charitable Work you will never see a Freemason on the street collecting money. Funds are raised entirely in house and yet the Freemasons in England contribute more money to charity than any organisation apart from the National Lottery.

SEE THE MILL IN A NEW LIGHT THIS JANUARY! The Whitchurch Silk Mill and its gardens in the heart of rural Hampshire will glisten and sparkle this January with an all new magical, after dark illuminated trail. The Mill will be transformed by spectacular installations, leaving the dark winter evenings aglow. This is a first for the Mill as it features dazzling light artworks, installations and an illuminated trail.

Often known as Blue January, for many it is a time to mark the end of the yule season and celebrate the end of winter and the return of the sun. Normally this quiet Hampshire town falls into darkness but this January the Mill will glow brighter than usual from 17 to 26 January thanks to the addition of sparkling installations from Yes Productions.

As part of the illumination, there will be a series of events including a business networking event, artistsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; development event, a health and wellbeing day and a skills project involving local young people. There will be markets and family activities over the weekends.

We’re getting very close to it and it looks like it’s a must Cos whether we like it or not it’s going to be win or bust Parliament has led us here there’s no one else to blame The MPs just can’t get it right in their lying cheating game We were suckered into joining where we really had no say As no one really knew what it was all about, on that fateful day When we signed a referendum to join a common cause But nothing was explained to us. Well nothing to give us pause ?

It wasn’t until the Euro crats began to dictate that we really saw the light And we really had no Champion, till Maggie stood up front to fight Cameron left with his tail between his legs because he couldn’t have his way Complete confusion since then, now we are the ones who I think will have to pay!

The EU is fearful and angry as they’ve had it easy up till now By shoring up unsteady currencies with money from us, Their only real “Milche Cow” But if we leave the EU without a deal, or so I am led to understand We will not have “Divorce bill”? That will save a few million grand But I can’t see into the future, so don’t know who’s right or who’s wrong I just know that something has got to give as it’s gone on for far too long I’m thinking of our future youngsters, it’s them that will have to pay Cos I am now too damned old and did nothing, so I don’t deserve a say!

As I stand alone on the beach with the sand between my toes, I look out to the horizon and the sun glows.

My heart and soul feels at peace, As my thoughts are flowing free.

Are you thinking of helping your child get onto the property ladder? If you are, you are not alone.

According to a recent survey by Just Group, over the last five years, parents and grandparents have helped three in every five first-time buyers purchase their property.

There are many positives to helping your child or grandchild with that key start, but there are risks too if you do not have the right advice.

Any confusion on where the money comes from can delay the conveyancing process and in a worse casescenario lead to the mortgage offer being retracted.

Many people think that giving their children money should be straight forward, but the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) laws, mortgage restrictions and the legal rights of all parties involved need to be addressed.

Parents should not think that they can simply agree with their child that the money is a gift. This is because your child will be asked for proof of funds by their lawyer.

They will require a letter from you confirming that the money you are providing is a gifted deposit and that you will have no rights over the property. Normally a signed letter to your child should be sufficient, with a copy being passed to their lawyer.

Their lawyer will also need to receive photo identification from you, such as a passport or driving licence.

They also need a document showing proof of your address, like a bank statement and utility bill.

Furthermore, they will also need to know where the funds came from. For example, was it from a pension draw, the sale of shares or the sale of a house?

If it is money coming from savings, you will have to provide bank statements showing how the money has been accruing over the last two to six months.

BASINGSTOKE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY www.bhsociety.btck.co.uk Our November meeting is traditionally our AGM followed by a time to chat and enjoy some cheese and a glass of wine. Needless to say, we tend to speed through the formal part of the evening spurred on by thoughts of the waiting refreshments!

As at previous AGMs we looked back over the past year with reports from our Chairman, Activities Secretary and Treasurer. Officers for the coming year were elected, and with just one change this time most remain in their positions for another year.

The highlight of the meeting is always the announcement of the competition results for the year. In 2019 we had a cake competition and a marmalade competition as well as our normal four evenings that are designed to encourage members to exhibit something, from the longest runner bean to a specimen rose. The exhibits are usually judged by the speaker for the evening so it’s not to RHS standards but to their preference.

This year Ros Blackman won the cake competition and David Read the marmalade. In the horticulturally based competitions Muriel Wraight came first, closely followed by Catherine Clayton in second and quite a way behind in third was Philip Wraight. Our competition organiser was pleased that this year many new names appeared on the exhibitors list, so who knows, could there be a new challenger for first place in 2020!

Why not make a New Years’ resolution to come to our meetings – you’d be most welcome and hopefully you’ll learn something new as well.

Our next meeting in Kempshott Village Hall will be on Monday January 20th at 7.30pm when Chris Bird from Sparsholt will be speaking about “Potatoes – their history, varieties and growing”.

The monthly Chatterbooks reading group for primary aged children will start up again on Friday 17th January 4pm and will plan our themes for the next year. The same will happen at our T.R.A.S.H. group (Teen Reading At South Ham).

Activities for adults this month include the wonderful Age Concern team who provide computer instruction for the over 50s on Tuesdays in term time from 10:00am1:00pm; appointments need to be booked through the local office why not give them a call on 01256 423874

UK here we come. We associate Spring and Summer with such visitors as the Cuckoo and various Warblers. However, when these leave on their Winter holidays, there is another set of bird species that regard us as a winter holiday destination. These are the species that breed in the high or sub-arctic or Russian tundra. Swans, Ducks, Geese and Waders can be found around our estuaries and lakes, taking advantage of the plentiful supply of food that these habitats provide.

There are, however, a number of species that will winter in our fields, woods and hedgerows. For example, one noisy species that can be found there is the Fieldfare. They may even come into your garden.

A member of the Thrush family, this chunky bird is only slightly smaller than a Mistle Thrush.

Individuals have been seen around Stratton Park but they are more often found in large noisy flocks tackling Hawthorn and other berries in hedgerows.

Their call is a distinctive clacking sound, rather like an old-fashioned football rattle.

Gearing up for wildlife. The team of local residents living around the Old Orchard who have been promoting wildlife friendly features in their gardens have now been joined by the residents of Kendal Gardens apartments, where a series of new features are being created – small dipping ponds and bog areas, wildflower areas and hedgehog friendly facilities (yes, there are hedgehogs seen here as well). During 2020 we will be replacing the Orchard’s old log bench seat with two new seats so that visitors can linger and watch the birds and butterflies.

I am a first-time buyer but cannot afford to buy on the open market, is Shared Ownership right for me?

Answer

Marie Pym, Residential Conveyancer replies, If you are a first-time buyer and looking to purchase a property, Shared Ownership is a scheme that will allow you to do so if you cannot afford to buy on the open market.

Shared Ownership gives first time buyers and those that do not currently own a home the opportunity to purchase a share in a new build or resales property. The purchaser pays for a mortgage on the share they own, and pays rent to a housing association on the remaining share. Because the purchaser only needs a mortgage for the share they are purchasing, the amount of money required for a deposit is a lot lower when compared to the amount that would be required when purchasing outright.

The purchaser has the option to increase his share during their ownership of the property via a process known as ‘staircasing’, and in most cases can staircase all the way to 100%, thereby owning the property outright. Shared ownership properties are always held under a Shared Ownership Lease. The property will remain leasehold following the staircasing to 100% if the property is a flat but will revert to freehold status is the property is a house. If you staircase to 100% you become an outright owner, and you will no longer need to pay rent.

Shared Ownership is essentially for people who would like to own their own home but cannot afford to buy on the open market.

• The rent is usually less than the rate charged on the open market and usually charged at 2.75% of the property value per annum, • You can start with a little as 25% share in some cases, • Your deposit can be 5% of the price of the share, not of the whole property.

Stamp duty land tax (SDLT or simply ‘stamp duty’) can generally be deferred until your share reaches 80%. The stamp duty land tax (SDLT) for shared ownership purchases differs compared to standard purchase and staircasing as you have 2 different options for paying. You can either pay the stamp duty on the full market value or on the share you are buying now. If you intend to effect staircasing to 100% in the near future then it may be advisable to pay the stamp duty land tax on the full value of the property now rather than in increments as your staircase. Please refer to HMRC website for full details and calculations in this regard Shared Ownership properties can often be found in private developments as the provision of a certain number of Shared Ownership units will often be required as a part of the planning permission for a development.

Getting started with Shared Ownership is not as complicated as people might think. First of all you should check if you are eligible. Please note that in addition to the general eligibility rules, some Housing Associations and boroughs have their own terms regarding priorities and affordability. As the end of the year approaches we can reflect that 2019 has been another good year for Kempshott WI. Our membership has increased yet again this year. Our speakers have been varied and entertaining and we intend to maintain our high standards in 2020. At the end of November we took fifty-three members by coach to Waddesdon Manor to see the house decorated for Christmas and enjoyed a shopping opportunity at the excellent Christmas Market they host every year.

We had a wonderful Christmas lunch for the members prepared by the catering students at Basingstoke College of Technology and our WI year ended with our Christmas Party. It just remains for me to wish everyone a happy New Year and to invite you to think about joining us this year, you will be made most welcome. Our first meeting of the new year is on Monday 27th January at 1.15pm for existing members who are joining us for lunch and 2.30pm for new members and visitors.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH NOTES

Police & NW are receiving more reports of people acting suspiciously & know that many residents are concerned that these unknown persons are gathering information about their properties with a view to committing burglary. In June 2019 Neighbourhood Watch and Hampshire Constabulary joined forces to produce the Home Security Challenge. This copy has been provided by our PCSO Debbie Doherty.

Simply answer the questions below to identify how secure your home is and consider the tips given in each question to help protect your property and keep crime down.

Home Security Challenge – How secure is your home? Approaching the outside of your home Does the exterior of your property have lighting for neighbours to view those accessing your property? YES/NO Answer No – install external dusk-to-dawn lighting or low level feature lighting Does your property have defensive planting under windows to deter access to your home? YES/NO Answer No – plant shrubs of a defensive nature i.e. thorny bushes, roses and pyracanthus.

Is your property boundary enclosed with a fence? YES/NO Answer Yes – putting trellis on the top all the way around including gates can prevent unwanted access.

If you are a member of the local Neighbourhood Watch scheme, is your window sticker visible? YES/NO Answer No – contact your watch coordinator for a replacement. If you are not a member, go to www.ourwatch.org.uk to join the scheme.

Do you have a notice on your door asking cold callers not to call? YES/NO Answer No – then contact Trading Standards or your NHW watch coordinator for more information.

Have you CCTV products installed around your property? YES/NO Answer No – a simple low cost solution is the Ring doorbell video product which is easy to install.

Do you have blinds or net curtains on your windows to stop people looking in? YES/NO Answer no – consider putting some up.

Your Home security How secure are your front and back doors – do they feel solid and are the locks and frames in good condition? YES/NO Answer No go to www.securedbydesign.co.uk and look for approved kite marked products, visit your local DIY store for more advice or contact a Trading Standards approved supplier/installer.

If you have wooden doors, are they fitted with a 5 lever mortice lock which you always use? YES/NO Answer No – arrange for the installation of an approved 5 lever mortice lock by contacting your local approved supplier.

Do you have uPVC and Patio doors? YES/NO Answer Yes – ensure you lock the doors correctly by lifting the handle and using the key, or refer to the manufacturer’s instructions on how to lock your door securely. If you have double door patio doors to the rear, consider fitting a Patlock device, simple to put on at night but increases security substantially.

Are your windows fitted with locks? YES/NO Answer No – have a registered and approved locksmith advise you on the relevant locks for your specific windows and consider having them fitted.

Your Home and Garden security Do you use timer switches on lamps or radios when you are away from your property, to give the impression that the house is occupied? YES/NO Answer No – your local DIY suppliers should have light dimmers and timers or be able to advise you on purchases. Answer Yes – please tell your friends to try them but don’t advertise the fact that you use them!!

Have you registered your property on Immobilise? YES/NO Answer No – Immobilise is the police approved web service to register your TV, Mobiles, Tablets, Cycles and Jewellery (you can add photographs). Police will check this site when they recover stolen items to try and return them to you. Go to www.immobilise.com to start.

Do you own antiques? YES/NO Answer Yes – seek advice from a registered antique dealer as to the best way to mark and protect your property.

Do you own jewellery? YES/NO Answer Yes – if your jewellery is valuable, ask a registered jeweller for a valuation and how to protect it. If it is not so valuable, photograph it and register on Immobilise.

Are your keys (car and home) left on view and/or they easily accessed to others? YES/NO Answer Yes – keep them in a safe place and take them upstairs with you at night. Modern car keys should be kept in a shielded pouch or tin – you can purchase low cost pouches online.

Do you have a Garden? YES/NO Answer Yes – are the gates secured with a hasp and shackle lock fitted with nonreturnable screws? Also, can your refuse bins be used by someone to access your garden over a fence or gate?

Do you have a Garage? YES/NO Answer Yes – ensure a suitable lock is fitted and perhaps a door alarm or similar device is installed. A ground anchor for up-and-over doors offers additional security.

Do you have a Shed? YES/NO Answer Yes – ensure it is fitted with a hasp and shackle lock with non-returnable screws.

Consider fitting a shed alarm and/or dusk to dawn light.

DECIDING WHETHER TO RESIGN

Check if there's another way to solve the problem It’s worth thinking about whether you’d want to stay in your job if the problem was solved. You might be able to get your employer to put things right without having to resign.

You could try: • talking to your employer about the problem • asking your trade union to talk to your employer for you, if you’re a member • raising a grievance - this is a formal complaint which your employer can’t ignore • asking your employer if they’ll arrange mediation - this is where someone else tries to help you agree • starting early conciliation to solve the problem without going to court Find out what to do next if you think you could try other options before resigning.

If you’re thinking about resigning because you’re being treated badly, keep a diary of what’s happening. This will give you useful evidence if you later decide to make a claim against your employer.

See if you can find a new job If you don’t want to find a way to stay in your job, it’s often easier to find a new job before leaving your old one.

This could mean you won’t lose income or have to worry about claiming benefits. You wouldn't have to answer difficult questions from a new employer about why you resigned without another job to go to.

If you still want to resign If you haven’t got another job to go to, you should work out your budget. This will tell you how long you’ll be able to manage for before you find another job. If it’s not for very long, it could be better to wait a bit longer before you resign.

If you or your partner get any benefits, check if stopping work will affect them. For example, your Universal Credit could stop for 3 months or longer if the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) says you didn’t have a good reason for resigning. This is called a sanction.

Contact your nearest Citizens Advice if you need to work out how your benefits might change.

If you don’t have another job to go to, you can claim benefits straight away.

You can claim benefits as soon as you know the date you’re stopping work. You’ll need to show you had a good reason for resigning, or you might not get any money for around 3 months. This is called a sanction.

You should also check what other benefits you could get.

TOP TECH OF THE 21ST CENTURY…SO FAR Usually at this time of year I write about the exciting tech that’s in development but as mentioned last month,

this year has been more evolution than revolution so I decided, as when are now in the third decade of the 21st century I’d reflect back on the technology we’ve experienced in the last 20 years.

High Speed Broadband The internet has been around for many years, especially when you consider the first email was sent back in the 1970s, but it was the introduction of dialup internet in the 1990s that really catapulted it into the public domain. Back then you had to plug a modem to the telephone and, at best, you might connect at a painfully slow 56Kbps.

In comparison to today’s high speeds, 20Mbps is 20,000Kbps which is a massive 35,714% increase in performance. The other downside of the modem was that once connected, no one could use the telephone for incoming or outgoing calls.

Broadband changed all of that with the introduction of ADSL. The phone signal got split into two signals, one for the broadband and one for phone calls. What was particularly clever is that broadband still used the same copper lines from the old phone systems. The internet was now reaching speeds of 500Mpbs to 8Mpbs. The next step was to move the equipment from the telephone exchange and put it into the green street cabinets we see and deliver the signal using Fibre.

Speeds now rocketed to 30-120Mpbs as that last length of copper was now greatly reduced. Instead of being miles, it was now metres. At the same type of pace, Virgin Media also delivered broadband but on dedicated cables but unfortunately, Kempshott was never included in the rollout.

Smartphones There’s no doubt that when the iPhone was released to the UK in November 2007, no one would have predicted that 10 years later nearly everyone in the UK would have a smartphone. Years before, Steve Jobs was at a dinner meeting with Bill Gates and Microsoft were gloating at how good their tablet was. Jobs was left frustrated by conversation and went home saying “let's show him what a tablet can really be.” This device went on to become the iPad but during the development period Jobs was also working on the iPod and had partnered with Motorola to launch the ROKR E1, a phone with iPad technology. The iPad was put on hold and all focus went on designing a new phone. During a similar period, Google were in discussions with Andy Rubin and his company, Android. Their plan started in 2003, 2 years before Apple, to create an open source (free for anyone) operating system to power Smartphones. In 2005, Rubin met with Google wanting endorsement and in August 2005, so impressed with what they’d seen, they bought the company for £50M. Google then spent the next 3 years working with numerous companies, including Intel, HTC, LG, Motorola, Sony and most notably, Samsung to create the “Open Handset Alliance” and October 2008 release the first handset though NTC. The rest, they say, is history. Over the following years Smartphones exploded into the market with bigger and better features.

Digital TV/High Def TV Prior to Digital TV, the only option was a big glass box in the corner of the sitting room. Analogue TV worked but the picture was subject to interface from the weather and the quality of the tuning equipment. Analogue TV was also limited, hence the lack of channels. TV stations only had a certain bandwidth available and transmitting pictures and sound took up most of that space. Any true analogue system actually requires no processing power as they respond in real-time, or as fast electricity can flow – which is VERY fast. Digital, on the other hand, has to be processed so only really became popular due of the development of cheap computers. The advantage of digital, however, is you can create your own systems. Analogue TV sends 25 full size frames, or pictures, to make up one second of TV. Digital is different because it actually sends one complete frame and then analyses the next frames to see what’s changed and then sends just the changes. For instance, if you’re watching a news reader, the background very rarely changes, or the changes are so small you wouldn't see a few frames were missed. The pictures can also be compressed taking up even less space. This means less bandwidth is required to transmit the same, or similar, images. The compression techniques used in Digital TV is the reason we now have hundreds of channels to choose from. Most modern TVs as just simply computers without a keyboard, in fact, most TVs have a USB socket on the back where you can plug a keyboard in, or and external USB drive to enable video recording. The High Definition TVs are simply the result of improved speeds from modern processors and better production techniques for the complexities of cramming 8,294,400 little dots that have to change up to 120 times a second.

Social Media This list can’t be complete without mentioning Social Media. Social Media goes back further than you think.

The modern technological side starts back in the 1980s with systems like CompuServ and UseNet. The rise of the internet in the 1990s led to the first recognisable website SixDegrees which allowed users to create profiles and upload profiles, create groups and see their connections to other users. This formed the basis of more successful sites like MySpace and Friendster but it was Facebook that took the idea to stratospheric. Arguably, Mark Zuckerberg stole the idea from the Winklevoss brothers’ idea ConnectU where he was the lead programmer but the foundation was already sewn. Twitter had also followed a similar timeline but with the conjunction of Smartphones and high-speed internet, both were in the right place and the right time. Instagram (now owned by Facebook) and Snapshat were pictorial version of the same idea.

Either way, social media has had a huge impact on global society.
