MÚLTIPLES RAZONES PARA CELEBRAR CON USTED Many reasons to celebrate with you ¡Bienvenido! Como siempre, es un gusto contar con su presencia a bordo.

Este mes de septiembre, tiene particular importancia para la familia Amaszonas por varios hechos que quiero compartir con usted. Inicialmente, la portada de la revista que tiene en sus manos es uno de los cuadros de la nueva colección del destacado artista boliviano Mamani Mamani titulada “Amaszonas”. Es un placer que el pintor hubiera elegido el nombre de nuestra aerolínea para bautizar su primera colección dedicada a la Amazonia. Como sabrán, Mamani Mamani es renombrado por sus obras dedicadas a la energía de los Andes y ahora decidió, por primera vez, trasladar esa pasión hacia el Amazonas. Esta colección es transportada en nuestros aviones, y se eligió a Santa Cruz como la primera ciudad que la reciba, porque es, además, un homenaje en su efemérides departamental.

Hay mucho que celebrar en septiembre, mes en el que Cochabamba, el corazón mismo de Bolivia, también conmemora su gesta cívica. Asimismo, saludamos a Brasil, país que el 7 de septiembre celebra 193 años de vida independiente. Amaszonas vincula al coloso del sur con toda la región a través de nuestra conexión a Campo Grande y de allí con otras ciudades, merced a acuerdos interlineales.

A partir de esta nueva colección de cuadros de un gran representante boliviano del arte, expresamos nuestro reconocimiento a la Amazonia boliviana y sudamericana, zona que vio nacer a Amaszonas y que es uno de los motivos para nuestro nombre.

Todos estos hechos nos llenan de satisfacción porque nos ratifican en el cumplimiento de nuestros objetivos.

Felicitaciones a Santa Cruz y Cochabamba, dos ciudades símbolos de Bolivia. Felicidades a los hermanos brasileños que a través de Campo Grande nos reciben.

Welcome! As always, it is a pleasure to have you on board.

This September, is particularly important for the family Amaszonas for several facts that I want to share with you. Initially, the cover of the magazine you are holding is one of the pictures of the new collection of outstanding Bolivian artist Mamani Mamani entitled “Amaszonas”. It’s a pleasure that the painter had chosen the name of our airline to baptize his first collection dedicated to the Amazon.

As you know, Mamani Mamani is renowned for his works dedicated to the energy of the Andes and now decided, for first time, to transfer that passion into the Amazon. This collection is carried in our planes, and Santa Cruz was chosen as the first city to receive it, because, it’s a tribute to his departmental anniversary.

There is much to celebrate in September, the month in which Cochabamba, the heart of Bolivia, also commemorates their civic date. We also welcome to Brazil, which celebrate on September 7, 193 years of independence. Amaszonas links the south colossus with all the region through our connection to Campo Grande and from there to other cities, thanks to agreements with others airlines.

From this new collection of pictures of a large Bolivian representative of art, we express our admiration to the Bolivian and South America, Amazon area where born Amaszonas and is one of the reasons for our name.

All these facts fill us with satisfaction because we ratify in achieving our goals. Congratulations to Santa Cruz and Cochabamba, two cities symbols of Bolivia. Congratulations to the Brazilian brothers that we receive in Campo Grande.

Infaltable en el botiquín

Viaja prevenido Prevention on your trip Un botiquín de primeros auxilios puede ser de mucha utilidad en otra ciudad o en el extranjero.

A first-aid kit can be very useful when visiting another city or foreign country.

En el extranjero o en otra ciudad que no sea la tuya, es probable que el medicamento que normalmente tomes no esté comercializado o lo esté con otro nombre, que el farmacéutico no hable tu idioma o que te resulte imposible encontrar aquel recurso que en tu entorno tengas tan a mano para una simple dolencia sin importancia. Para ello, viaja con un botiquín de primeros auxilios.

El kit debe ser resistente y ligero; ubícalo a un costado de tu maleta y una vez en tu destino asegúrate de que se encuentre en un lugar seco y fresco, protegido del sol. Los medicamentos deben estar etiquetados y llevar prospecto y fecha de caducidad. Es necesario que lleves las recetas médicas para evitar posibles problemas en las aduanas.

Recuerda: si llevas el botiquín en el equipaje de mano, no cargues en él jeringas ni tijeras; no están permitidas en las cabinas de los aviones.

When travelling abroad or even just to another city, it is likely that your medications may not be available or may have a different name. Or maybe the pharmacist won’t speak your language. All of these things can make it impossible to find what you need to treat even the simplest of pain. Therefore, you should travel with a first-aid kit.

The kit should be resistant and lightweight.

Pack it in the pocket of your suitcase and once you reach your destination make sure to store it in a cool and dry place, protected from the sun.

The medicine should be labeled and carried in their original packaging with an unexpired date.

It is necessary that you take prescriptions with you to avoid possible problems in customs. Remember: if you take the first-aid kit in your carry-on bag, don’t take needles or scissors, because they are not allowed in the airplane cabin.

El Pantanal es uno de los tesoros más importantes de Bolivia, Brasil y Paraguay. El lugar esconde un paisaje rico en fauna y flora.

The Pantanal is one of the most important treasures of Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay. It covers a landscape rich in fauna and flora.

Buceo, pesca, cabalgata, observación de flora y fauna, navegación en lancha, canoa, kayak o en floteles, y mucho excursionismo... El Pantanal ofrece de todo para vivir una experiencia fantástica en el centro de Sudamérica, en un territorio que abarca gran parte de Brasil y Bolivia, y parte de Paraguay.

Al contrario de lo que sugiere su nombre, no se trata de un gran pantano. Es una extensa llanura aluvial (220.000 km²) que se ve parcialmente cubierta por agua durante la estación de las lluvias y que queda al descubierto durante el estiaje. El cauce de los ríos sube hasta tres metros entre una estación y otra, lo que garantiza la presencia de nutrientes en el suelo y esto, a su vez, se traduce en una espectacular presencia de flora y fauna.

La densidad de la población humana es muy baja en la zona, aunque los números suben en las tierras altas alrededor de ella, en particular en la ciudades brasileñas de Cuiabá, Campo Grande y Corumbá, que ejercen de puerta de entrada al Pantanal.

Los ranchos ganaderos llamados fazendas forman la industria más importante de la región, así como los cultivos de caña de azúcar, maíz, arroz, mandioca y soya, la minería de diamantes, oro, hierro, y manganeso, y, por supuesto, el turismo.

Diving, fishing, horseback riding, flora and fauna watching, boating, canoeing, kayaking and floating hotels, so many excursions… The Pantanal offers everything for a fantastic experience in the center of South America, in a territory that takes up a large part of Brazil and Bolivia, and a part of Paraguay.

Unlike what the name appears to mean in Spanish, this place is not a giant swamp. It is an extensive alluvial plain (220,000 square kilometers) that is partially covered with water during the rainy season and that even remains covered in places during the low water levels. From one season to the next, the rivers rise up to three meters, which guarantees the presence of nutrients in the soil and that in turn results in spectacular flora and fauna.

The population density in the region is very small, although the numbers grow in the higher ground areas of the region, particularly in the Brazilian cities of Cuiabá, Campo Grande and Corumbá, which is the main entrance to the Pantanal.

The cattle ranches (which are called fazendas) are the most important industry of the region. But there are also crops such as sugar cane, corn, rice, cassava, and soy and minerals such as diamonds, gold, iron and magnesium. And of course there is tourism.

INGRESANDO POR CAMPO GRANDE Campo Grande es la capital del estado de Mato Grosso do Sul. Brinda acceso al Pantanal por la parte sur, por las subregiones conocidas como Pantanal de Miranda, Pantanal do Aquidauana y por la Estrada Parque Pantanal. Asimismo, esta ciudad, a la que Amaszonas te lleva los lunes y viernes vía Santa Cruz, te conecta con Bonito, población famosa por sus paisajes naturales, especialmente los acuáticos con ríos de aguas cristalinas, cascadas y abundantes peces.

Salvo que estés dentro de la categoría de aventurero con vasta experiencia, el Pantanal no es un lugar para ser explorado por cuenta propia. Como el transporte público solo conecta algunas poblaciones, lo aconsejable es contratar una excursión de varios días con alguna agencia local o desplazarte hasta alguna fazenda dentro del Pantanal, establecimiento que se encargará de traerte y llevarte al aeropuerto, y donde establecerás tu base para visitar la región.

ARRIVING FROM CAMPO GRANDE Campo Grande is the capital of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul (in Brazil). It provides access to the Pantanal from the south, from the sub-regions known as the Pantanal de Miranda, the Pantanal do Aquidauana and the Estrada Parque Pantanal.

This city, that receives Amaszonas flights on Mondays and Fridays from Santa Cruz, can also connect you with the town of Bonita, a place famous for its natural landscapes, especially the rivers of crystalline waters, waterfalls and abundant fish.

Unless you are an adventure traveller with vast experience, the Pantanal is not a place to explore unaided. Public transportation only connects a few towns, and thus it is advisable to use a local agency to hire an excursion of several days. Or you can even to plan your visit through one of the local ranches in the Pantanal, where they will handle picking you up from the airport (and taking you back) as well as acting as your basecamp for the visit.

BITÁCORA On the blog PARA VIAJAR SEGURO La mayoría de las guías de viajes señalan el periodo entre julio y noviembre como el mejor para visitar el Pantanal. Sin embargo, hay otra etapa excelente para visitar la región: la de mayo a junio. En ambos casos el calor en el día alcanza los 33 grados como máximo, las noches son frescas y los mosquitos no son tan molestosos.

Es en estas épocas del año en las que casi no llueve y el nivel de los ríos es más bajo, por lo que los animales se concentran en los pocos lugares con agua. Es imposible no contemplar los jaguares, las nutrias gigantes, las capibaras, los yacarés, los osos hormigueros y hasta las temibles anacondas. Mientras que los cielos son surcados por parabas, loros, tucanes, batos, garzas... ¡Maravilla a granel!

Entre julio y septiembre se produce la maravillosa floración de los ipés, conocidos en Bolivia como tajibos, árboles típicos del Pantanal que obsequian al visitante sus colores amarillo, lila, blanco y rosado, tal como lo hacen la infinidad de mariposas y otros insectos que enriquecen la zona.

EXÓTICA La capibara o carpincho es el roedor viviente de mayor tamaño y peso del mundo. Habita en manadas, siempre cerca al agua.

TO TRAVEL SAFELY The majority of tour guides say that the best time to visit the Pantanal is between July and November. Nevertheless, there is another excellent time to visit the region, and that is in May and June.

In both cases, the temperature during the day reaches a maximum of 92F, and the nights are cool and the mosquitos are not so bothersome.

It is during these times of the year when it almost never rains and the water levels of the rivers are low, and thus the animals converge in the few places where there is water. It is impossible not to gaze upon jaguars, giant otters, capybaras, caimans, anteaters, and even the terrible anacondas.

While the skies are crisscrossed by parrots, macaws, toucans, herons and others… Marvelous in every way.

Between July and September there is a wonderful flowering of the ipés (called tajibos in Bolivia), a tree typical of the Pantanal. These tree reward visitors with their colors of yellow, lilac, white and pink, and those colors attract an infinity of butterflies and insects.

EN LA On the blog BITÁCORA EL LUJO ES LA NATURALEZA En líneas generales el alojamiento en la zona del Pantanal es rústico. Con la excepción de unos pocos hoteles, la mayoría de las opciones de alojamiento son fazendas que también ofrecen actividades de ecoturismo. Además, existen unas pocas reservas particulares dentro de las cuales se han establecido posadas pantaneiras especializadas en la observación de flora y fauna. Por otro lado, están los barcos-hotel (floteles) que recorren los grandes ríos y están completamente equipados para la práctica de la pesca.

A propósito de recorrido: el Trem do Pantanal transita los 220 km de distancia entre Campo Grande y Miranda, en los márgenes del Pantanal. El viaje dura 11 horas, sin superar los 40 km/h para que los turistas puedan disfrutar del paisaje. Vale la pena tomarlo.

NATURE IS LUXURIOUS Generally speaking, housing in the Pantanal is rustic. With the exception of a few hotels, the majority of lodging options are found in the fazendas (the ranches), which also offer ecotourism activities. Additionally, there are a few privately own reserves within the Pantanal and they have inns that specialize in seeing flora and fauna. There are also the boat-hotels (floating hotels) that travel on the large rivers and are completely equipped for fishing.

Getting there. The Trem do Pantanal is 220km between Campo Grande and Miranda, on the edge of the Pantanal. The trip lasts 11 hours, and doesn’t go faster than 40 km per hour, allowing tourists to enjoy the views. It is worth the trip.

El Pantanal es para ti si amas la naturaleza en estado puro, si no te importan los mosquitos, si puedes dormir en sitios rústicos y gustas de los desplazamientos largos, si comprar no es la prioridad en tus viajes y si puedes vivir sin wifi.

The Pantanal is for you if you are a lover of nature in its purest form, if you aren’t bothered by mosquitos, if you can sleep in rustic accommodations and handle long trips, if shopping is not a priority for you and if you can live without wifi.

UN ZOOLÓGICO COLOSAL Salvando las distancias, el Pantanal es un zoológico al aire libre. Según la WWF (World Wildlife Fund for Nature), hay registros de al menos 4.700 especies, incluyendo plantas y vertebrados. De este total, existen 3.500 especies de plantas (árboles y vegetación acuática y terrestre), 325 de peces, 53 de anfibios, 98 de reptiles, 656 aves y 159 mamíferos.

Esta ONG trabaja en Brasil y Bolivia con proyectos de conservación, entendiendo la importancia del lugar para la conservación de la biodiversidad.

Reconociendo esa importancia, en el año 2000, 22

la Unesco declaró a una pequeña área dentro del Pantanal como Patrimonio Natural de la Humanidad. Es una ínfima porción, considerando que la lista de amenazas parece interminable: la extensiva ganadería, el avance del cultivo de la caña, la destrucción del bosque para producir carbón y pastos, la pesca y la caza salvajes, la minería en busca del oro y piedras preciosas que ha acabado contaminando varios de los ríos de la región y el tráfico de animales silvestres. Ojalá el ecoturismo responsable pueda contribuir positivamente a su preservación.

A COLLASAL ZOO Apart from the size, the Pantanal is a open-air zoo. According to the World Wildlife Fund for Nature, at least 4,700 species are found there, including plants and vertebrae. Of the total, there are 3,500 species of plants (trees, and water and land vegetation), 325 fish, 53 amphibians, 98 reptiles, 656 birds and 159 mammals. Knowing the importance of the Pantanal for the conservation of biodiversity, this NGO has conservation projects in both Brazil and Bolivia.

Recognizing the importance of the area, in the year 2000, UNESCO declared a small area of the Pantanal as Natural Patrimony of Humanity. The portion designated is tiny considering that the list of threats is unending: extensive cattle ranching, expansive sugar production, the destruction of the forest to produce charcoal and pastures, fishing and hunting, mining that searches for gold and precious stones resulting in the contamination of various rivers in the region, and the trafficking of wild animals. Hopefully, responsible ecotourism can help contribute to preservation.

Remember: in the Pantanal there are no stores, so you must not forget medicines, batteries, good and water.

“Soy parte de lo que pinto” “I am a part of what I paint” Amaszonas da el nombre y auspicia la reciente colección pictórica del artista Mamani Mamani, que por primera vez muestra el colorido de la Amazonia boliviana.

“Se reunieron todos los dioses, achachilas, apus y seres místicos de los Andes con los que siempre estoy conversando, y decidieron darme los códigos, símbolos y colores. Ellos dijeron: ‘Este Mamani Mamani será el mensajero, el portador’”. Así explica el pintor aimara-paceño Roberto Mamani el origen de sus pinturas.

En su galería-taller de la histórica calle Jaén, cerca del centro de La Paz, su obra prolífica se hace notar en postales, imanes, tazas, calendarios, cuadros de todo tamaño, libros, esculturas, murales, muebles, entre otros, y abarrotan el lugar de colores y formas únicas que hacen referencia a todo lo relacionado con Bolivia. Todo con el toque que caracteriza al artista.

“Muchos de mis cuadros se me aparecen en sueños. Por ello los yatiris y abuelos recomiendan soñar para encontrar inspiración o respuestas. En mi caso son tantos sueños y mensajes que no me alcanzarán las vidas para pintar lo que veo”.

“All the gods got together, achachilas, apus and mystical beings of the Andes with whom I am always talking, and they decided to give me the codes, symbols and colors. They said: ‘This Mamani Mamani will be the messenger, the carrier”. That is how the Aymara-Paceño painter, Roberto Mamani, explains the origin of his painting.

In his gallery/workshop on the historical Calle Jaén, near the center of La Paz, his prolific work is evident in postcards, magnets, calendars, notebooks of all sizes, books, sculptures, murals, furniture and more, all of which together pack the place with color and unique shapes that make reference to everything linked with Bolivia. Each has the touch of the artist.

“Many of my paintings come to me in a dream. That is why the yatiris and grandfathers recommend dreaming to find your inspiration or answers. In my case, there are so many dreams and messages that I won’t have enough lives to paint all I see”.

- ¿Existe alguna persona en su vida que haya influido para que usted pinte?

- Mi abuela, mi awicha; ella me enseñó toda la parte espiritual de ser artista. No hablaba español, solo aimara y era una excepcional tejedora y veedora de la hoja de coca. Me decía que los colores fuertes son para ahuyentar a los espíritus y para no quedarse en la oscuridad, y que a la Pachamama le gustan las tonalidades, por lo que hay que ofrecerle las mejores.

- ¿Y cómo aprendió a pintar?

- Soy autodidacta. Empecé a pintar a los nueve años, ya con esa tarea de mensajero.

Agarraba los carbones de mi madre -que cocinaba a leña- y dibujaba sobre papel periódico o cartones.

- ¿Cuál es el presente y futuro de su misión?

- Estoy trabajando en murales y esculturas.

Quiero hacer algo monumental. Me siento en un momento de energías, fuerzas y edad importantes. Quiero dejar un legado que se sustente con toda esta visión y aportar al orgullo de esta tierra. Ahora estoy en una serie de 14 murales de gran tamaño que haremos en El Alto, en edificios de hasta 12 pisos.

Los colores del artista Artist’s colors La colección “Amaszonas” está compuesta por 20 cuadros de acrílico sobre tela y pastel sobre papel. Se encuentra en la Torre Cainco de Santa Cruz.

The “Amaszonas” collection consists of 20 acrylic paintings on canvas and pastel on paper. It is in the Tower Cainco of Santa Cruz.

- Is there someone in your life who has influenced the way you paint?

- My grandmother, my awicha; she taught me the spiritual part of being a painter. She didn’t speak Spanish, just Aymara, and she was an exceptional weaver and coca leaf reader.

She told me that strong colors frighten off the spirits and the dark, and that the Pachamama (mother earth) like such tones, and she must be given the best.

- How did you learn to paint?

- I’m self-taught. I started to paint when I was nine years old, already with this job as a messenger. I took the coals from my mother – she cooked over wood – and drew on newspapers and cartons.

- What are you doing now and what is planned for the future?

- I am working on murals and sculptures. I want to do something monumental. I feel like I am at an important age and I feel energies and strengths. I want to leave a legacy that carries forth all this vision, and I want to contribute something to the pride of this country.

- ¿Sigue manteniendo ese gusto y esa pasión?

- Para mí el arte no es una profesión, sino un oficio; es algo placentero de hacer. Hace 35 años que estoy en esto y lo sigo disfrutando. Yo no tuve formación, pero para devolver algo de lo mucho que me da la pintura estoy concretando una escuela de arte integral, que cuenta con 150 niños que pasan desde música hasta karate.

- ¿Cómo es que se anima a pintar la Amazonia? Es la primera vez que lo hace...

- Uno siempre ve que Bolivia es los Andes, las montañas, pero los visitantes se sorprenden al enterarse de que el Amazonas es la parte más grande del país y, como yo mismo, descubre ese espacio sagrado. La Amazonia tiene otras energías: allí se sienten otros aires y colores. Sus mariposas, tortugas, lagartos y pájaros están llenos de colores, de sonidos, de vida pura y vibrante. Esa selva indómita, esa guerrera amazonas nos enseña y nos da cosas que no tenemos que perder. Por ello utilicé tintes fosforescentes y efectos en tres dimensiones (en la oscuridad las pinturas brillan y tienen un juego visual), como la selva misma, con sus cientos de colores, con toda la vida que alberga.

I am working on a series of 14 very large murals that will be done in El Alto, on buildings up to twelve stories high.

- Do you maintain your enjoyment and passion?

- For me art is not a profession, but it’s my role; and it is enjoyable. I have been doing it for 35 years and I still enjoy it. I was not trained, but to give back something of all that painting has given to me, I am working to create a school of integrated arts for 150 children who will have courses from music to karate.

- Your work also has inspiration from the Amazon region. Where does that come from?

- One always thinks that Bolivia is the Andes, the mountains, but visitors are surprised to learn that the Amazon region is the largest of the country. Like me, they discover this place that is sacred and full of life. The Amazon region has different energies; you feel different air and different colors. The butterflies, turtles, lizards, and birds are full of colors, of sounds, of pure life and of vibration. This untamed jungle, this warrior that is the Amazon, teaches us and gives us things that we cannot lose. ARTÍSTICA Artistic window - Eso carga su obra de misticismo...

- Siento que cada obra tiene un espíritu y un lugar al que pertenece. Hay cuadros que me acompañan por años y de pronto alguien mira uno, se emociona y dice: “¡Ese es mío!”.

Hay algunos que no quería vender, pero cuando termino una obra siento que ya no me pertenece, sino que le pertenece a todos y si encuentra con quien irse, se tiene que ir.

Otros se quedan y también dejo muchos en los países adonde voy, cuando siento que deben estar allí.

- Does that fill your works with mysticism…?

- I feel that each work has a spirit and a place to which it belongs. There are paintings that are with me for years and then someone will see one, get excited and say “that is the one for me!”. There are some that I don’t want to sell, but when I finish a painting I feel like it doesn’t belong to me, but instead it belongs to everyone and if it finds someone to go home with, then that is the way it was meant to be. Others stay and I also leave others in countries I travel to, when I feel that they belong there.

Lo primero que se disfruta al llegar a Cochabamba es su clima agradable: días soleados de temperatura templada con un promedio de 25 grados centígrados todo el año. Quizá fue esto lo que llamó la atención del inca Huayna Capac que, en plena expansión de su imperio, fundó Q’ochapanpa o Kochaj-pampa (que en quechua significa “lago de la pampa”). Gracias a sus prósperas tierras, este valle de la precordillera se convirtió en un importante centro agrícola. En la actualidad, es conocida como la ciudad jardín de Bolivia y sus flores, frutos, vegetales y plantas son las mejores del país e incluso de la región.

The first thing people enjoy upon arriving to Cochabamba is its pleasant climate: sunny days with a temperate climate in the 70’s year round. Perhaps that is what first grabbed the attention of the Inca, Huayna Capac who, during the expansion of the empire, founded Q’ochapanpa o Kochaj-pampa (which in quechua means “lake of the pampa”).

Thanks to its richness of the land, this valley became an important center of agriculture. Currently, it is known as the garden city of Bolivia, and her flowers, vegetation and plants are the best of the country and even of the region.

Food is plentiful and most are spicy. re is no self-respecting person from Cochabamba who doesn’t have a favorite place to eat his or her favorite dish, and all will proudly share their suggestions with visitors: pork sandwiches from Los Juanquis, stuff potatoes on Calama street, fried pork from Doña Pola or the giblets on El Prado avenue, as well as other delicious street and restaurant foods. But if you want something a little more elegant, but with the same great flavor, the Casa de Campo, on the Recova passageway, is the perfect restaurant for eating a pique lobo or a pique macho (both are traditional dishes). But be careful of the spicy, hot salsa, called llajua!

After such a meal, it is best to forgo the afternoon nap and instead take a walk. Options?

Going to the Portales Palace, a mansion that belonged to Simon Iturri Patiño, who was one of the most powerful men in the history of Bolivia and was know as the “tin baron.” The house has been converted into a museum. It is a beautiful example of an eclectic style dating from the beginning of the 20th Century, and represents the tastes of elite Europeans of the time. The magnificent gardens were created by Japanese specialists and are similar to those found at the Palace of Versailles in Paris.

For more history, you can also visit the Santa Teresa Convent, which is a baroque style building built in 1760. Curiously, religious place took in women from the wealthy families of the city, women who would dedicate their lives to God. In many cases they were accompanied by several servants who also remained cloistered for the rest of their days.

La casa convertida en museo, es un bello ejemplo de estilo ecléctico que respon-

día a comienzos del siglo XX al gusto de las élites europeas. Sus magníficos jardines fueron concebidos por especialistas japoneses y son similares a los existentes en el palacio de Versalles de París.

Para otro baño de historia también se puede visitar el Convento Santa Teresa, un edificio de estilo barroco construido en 1760.

Como dato curioso, la vivienda religiosa recibía a las mujeres de las familias ricas de la ciudad que decidían dedicar sus vidas a Dios; en la mayoría de los casos llegaban acompañadas por algunas sirvientas que también permanecían enclaustradas por el resto de sus días.

VIVE LA NOCHE La noche cochabambina tiene dos puntos protagonistas: la calle España y la avenida Pando. En la primera se centran los cafés, donde los amigos se encuentran y empiezan a calentar. Es un ambiente bohemio y distendido donde el cacho (juego tradicional con dados) y la Taquiña (la cerveza local) reinan y empiezan a soltar las risas. La siguiente parada es la Pando, donde se encuentran los boliches y discotecas de moda. Éstos son más formales y exigen cierto protocolo de vestimenta, además tienen precios más elevados.

Para terminar como buen “cochalo”, Las Islas nos espera para revivir con un trancapecho (emparedado de carne de res y ensalada).

Cochabamba deja el corazón contento y la mente llena de paisajes y dejos de la historia.

NIGHTLIFE There are two main nightlife protagonists in Cochabamba: España Street and Pando Avenue. On the first you find many cafes where friends meet up. It has a bohemian and relaxed atmosphere where cacho (a traditional dice game) and la Taquiña (a local beer) rule and where laughter begins. The next stop is on Pando Avenue, where the fashionable bars and dance clubs are found. These places are more formal and require a certain protocol of dress to be followed, and the prices are higher. To finish the night like a good “cochalo” (a local person of Cochabamba), Las Islas awaits to revive you with a trancapecho (a “heart attack” beef sandwich).

Túpac Inca Yupanqui (1471-1493) eligió Chinchero para construir su palacio. Allí, en aquel pueblo que ya tenía fama de albergar a las mejores tejedoras del imperio inca, vivió el soberano hasta su muerte.

La Conquista no impidió que las hábiles artesanas continuaran refinando sus tejidos y gracias a ello los pobladores de Chinchero sobrevivieron.

La exquisitez de sus telas, los colores obtenidos de la naturaleza y la belleza de los diseños cautivaban a quienes las tenían en frente.

La ancestral población está a 45 minutos en automóvil desde Cusco. Sus mujeres se adaptan a la globalización y pasan sus conocimientos a las nuevas generaciones. Sin embargo, su trabajo continúa atrayendo y fascinando a los visitantes que tienen la oportunidad de experimentar este “turismo vivencial”.

Su uniforme es el mismo que usaron sus tatarabuelas. No lo llevan por obligación, sino por orgullo e identidad. Se mantienen unidas a pesar de los gobiernos y ONG’s de turno. Tienen marcado en la piel que su sobrevivencia no depende de nadie más que de ellas mismas. Así, tejen en silencios que solo se cortan por la broma que alguna de ellas murmura o cuando sus bebés lloran pidiendo alimento.

Como buenas anfitrionas, dejan sus ovillos y hebras cuando los buses de turistas se detienen en la puerta. Mientras una acomoda a los visitantes, otra invita té de coca y la dueña de la casa-taller alista su puesto de trabajo para mostrar los procesos con los que logran sus tejidos.

Todo es natural. En una mesa se extiende el maíz morado, el molle (árbol oriundo del Perú) que da los tonos amarillos, el añil para el azul, las semillas de achiote (urucú en Bolivia) para el naranja, entre otros. A un costado las ollas hierven con diferentes hierbas. Un hueso de llama es usado para darle algunos toques a los diseños.

La destreza sorprende. Los hilos cobran formas coloridas, mientras las tejedoras cuentan a los turistas que no se trata de magia, sino de trabajo y buen gusto.

Las mujeres se organizan en cooperativas que tienen un directorio y asambleas semanales donde debaten las problemáticas y planifican actividades. Muchas hablan quechua, español, inglés y portugués o francés. Curiosamente, se esfuerzan por hacer que sus hijos asistan a la universidad sin olvidar su identidad y sus prácticas, ahora en peligro de extinción.

Las tejedoras de Chinchero están tratando de lograr un mejor futuro para su comunidad y el Perú se enorgullece de ellas.

Their uniform is the same that their great-grandmothers wore. They don’t wear this because of obligation but because of pride and identity. They weave in a silence that is only broken by the telling of a joke or the cry of a baby in want of food.

Like good hosts, they set aside their balls of wool and weavings when a tourist bus stops at the door. While some make the visitors comfortable, others provide coca tea and the owner of the workshop readies her station to show all how they make the weavings.

Everything is natural. On one table purple corn, molle (a tree native to Peru), gives yellow tones, indigo for blue, and the seeds of the achieve (also known as urucu in Bolivia) for orange, and other colors. On one side, the pots boil the different herbs. A llama bone is used to add a touch to the designs.

that it is not magic, but instead hard work and good taste.

Después de una siesta viene el café y con él las masitas y horneados “cambas” (término usado como gentilicio o propio de la región oriental de Bolivia). Éstos no son una simple comida, son un símbolo de tradición y un estandarte de la forma de vivir del cruceño que valora la tranquilidad, hospitalidad y la confraternización.

No se tiene en claro el origen de las masitas “cambas” ni se conoce sus formas originales, pero lo más probable es que hayan sido elaborados en la región a partir de la Conquista.

Así, los diversos tipos de masaco y empanadas, el sonso y cuñapé hayan sufrido cambios con el paso del tiempo, en busca de nuevos sabores y al influjo de la sofisticación de la cocina. No obstante, no ha perdido su esencia: los ingredientes que requieren ser triturados se siguen moliendo en “tacú” (recipiente hecho de madera) y la cocción, en la mayoría de los casos, es en hornos de barro. En pueblos y ciudades, aun es posible atesorar la postal de las señoras y “peladingos” (niños) ofreciendo en canastos las exquisiteces. Y es que el café de la siesta sigue siendo una excepción en tiempos del “estoy sin tiempo”.

After a nap comes coffee and with that also come the little pastries and baked goods in the “camba” style (camba is a term used to refer to the eastern region of Bolivia). These are not simple foods, they are symbols of tradition and are a basic part of Santa Cruz lifestyle, where tranquility, hospitality and friendship are valued.

The origin of these baked goods is not clear, but it is likely that they have been produced in this region since the time of the Conquest.

The different types of baked goods including the masaco and empanadas, and the sonso and cunape, have changed over time, as new and better flavors are searched for. Still they haven’t lost their essence: the ingredients that need to be ground are crushed in the “tacú” (a wooden bowl) and the baking, in most cases, is done in a mud oven. In towns and cities, it is still possible to hoard the goods of women and children offering huge baskets full of these delicacies. And taking time for coffee following the afternoon nap is still the exception in these times when people often fell “they don’t have time”.

El masaco puede ser de yuca cocida o de plátano frito, y en el segundo caso existen de plátano verde y maduro. Lleva carne seca, chicharrón de cerdo o queso.

El gerente general de Fexpocruz atribuye el éxito de la institución al trabajo de sus fundadores y al de los actuales funcionarios, no solo en muestras sino también en eventos.

Mario Herrera is getting ready to inaugurate the 40th International Fair of Santa Cruz. The managing director of Fexpocruz attributes the success of the institution to the work of the founders and to the actual workers, not only for the creation of stands but also the events.

Fexpocruz es el resultado del trabajo visionario de sus fundadores y de la herencia emprendedora privada que se refleja en el directorio y en todos los funcionarios que diariamente contribuyen a que todas sus ferias, y por supuesto Expocruz, sigan siendo el referente nacional de la generación de nuevas oportunidades de negocios y de empleos para los bolivianos. Eso lo tiene bien claro Mario Herrera Sánchez, gerente general de la institución, que, dentro de poco, inaugurará la 40va Feria Internacional de Santa Cruz.

- ¿Qué ha logrado Fexpocruz en sus 53 años de vida?

- Somos el mayor centro de negocios del país, con proyección internacional. La presencia de delegaciones empresariales de más de 23 países en cada versión de Expocruz y en otras muestras sectoriales nos llena de satisfacción demostrando así que somos el referente como organizadores de ferias del país.

- ¿Por qué se crearon las ferias sectorizadas?

- La tendencia mundial es realizar ferias sectoriales; las multisectoriales ya no funcionan en los países, es por eso que Expocruz sigue sorprendiendo a todos al ser exitosa y aún con mucha proyección. Las ferias son muy importantes, puesto que al ser especializadas los expositores trabajan de una forma distinta en su presentación y atención al público.

Según Herrera, solo Expocruz produjo el año pasado 75.000 empleos; por lo que la institución es una gran generadora de trabajos con todas sus ferias.

- ¿Qué ofrece Fexpocruz a los expositores de sus diversas ferias?

- Los expositores son el ser de cada una de nuestras ferias; es por ello que les brindamos servicios adecuados y les creamos espacios y oportunidades de negocios para que sigan creciendo y proyectándose a otros niveles empresariales.

- ¿Están planificando una nueva muestra?

- Tenemos en mente crear otros espacios para promover otros sectores de la economía como son los eventos y el turismo.

- ¿Cómo es que Fexpocruz decide ofrecer salones para fiestas y eventos?

- Hace 10 años contamos con el Centro Internacional de Convenciones Fexpocruz, con esto diversificamos los servicios que ofrecemos a la sociedad en general. Nos hemos convertido en un referente importante de eventos en Bolivia.

Recientemente tuvimos la visita del papa Francisco al campo ferial, cuando se reunió con los movimientos populares del país, y, además, hemos realizado otros eventos internacionales como la Cumbre G77+China. En nuestras instalaciones se realizan diversos eventos sociales, así como empresariales, además de congresos y cumbres internacionales. Contamos con toda la infraestructura, personal y logística para realizar cualquier evento en nuestro país.

Its success is also the result of all the workers who, on a daily basis, contribute to all the fairs. Expocruz continues of be a national reference for the creation of new business opportunities and jobs for all Bolivians. - In 53 years, what has Fexpocruz accomplished?

- We are the largest business center with an international presence in the country. Business delegations from over 23 countries have attended each year of the Expocruz fair and we are very proud that we are a reference for the country in how to organize fairs.

- Why did you create fairs by sector?

- The tendency in the world is to create fairs by sector. Multi-sector fairs no longer work and that is why Expocruz continues to surprise everyone with its success and with its possibilities for growth. Specialized fairs are important because the exhibitions work in a different manner to create their presentation and customer service.

- What does Expocruz offer to the exhibitors in its diverse fairs?

- The exhibitors are the point of each of our fairs. We give them good service and provide them with space and business opportunities so that they can continue to grow and reach new levels.

- Are you planning a new exhibition?

- We are thinking of creating other instances to promote other economic sectors with events and tourism.

- How did Fexpocruz decide to make party and event rooms available?

- For ten years we have used the International Convention Center of Fexpocruz, and with that we have diversified the services we offer to the general public. We have become an important reference for events in Bolivia.

Recently, with our facilities, we participated in the visit of Pope Francis, when he met with social movements of the country and we have also hosted events such as the G77 + China Summit. Different social events are held in our space; some business focused and others host international congresses or summits. We have all the infrastructure, personnel and logistical support that are needed to host any event in our country.

TOUR HISTÓRICO Asunción ofrece actividades al aire libre, paseos culturales y una maravillosa arquitectura colonial. La Manzana de la Rivera, reconocida como un centro cultural recreativo e histórico, representa la esencia de la época colonial, con construcciones que datan de los siglos XVIII y XIX. Son ocho edificaciones restauradas donde se realizan diferentes muestras artísticas. A muy pocas cuadras se ubica el Palacio del Gobierno, actual sede de la Presidencia de la República, que posee miradores con excelentes panorámicas. La propiedad, edificada en 1772, fue el lugar elegido para realizar las reuniones secretas donde se planificaron las estrategias para derrocar al gobierno español.

Otra construcción digna de ser visitada es la Casa de la Independencia, el punto neurálgico donde comenzó a gestarse la emancipadora revolución de mayo de 1811. Hoy funciona como sede de conservación y exhibe documentos, muebles y objetos de la época.

En las calles Palma y Chile se puede visitar el Panteón de los Héroes, cuya construcción comenzó en 1863. La capilla fue inaugurada recién en 1936 y en ella se encuentran las cenizas del Mariscal López y de otros héroes de la historia.

MUCHO PARA VER Saliendo del circuito histórico de Asunción, merecen una visita el Jardín Botánico y el zoológico.

En la misma zona hay una serie de museos: el Indigenista, el Histórico, el de Historia Natural y el de Bellas Artes. Este último fue fundado en 1909 y expone pinturas europeas de los siglos XVI al XIX y diversas obras de artistas paraguayos, esculturas y cerámicas de reconocidos maestros.

La centenaria Estación Ferroviaria asombra con su monumental arquitectura y brinda la posibilidad de efectuar un paseo en tren, disfrutando de los paisajes pintorescos de la capital paraguaya. No puedes irte de Asunción sin experimentar esta actividad.

La zona más concurrida y punto de reunión de residentes y turistas es la tradicional calle Palma, en el centro citadino, con multitud de tiendas que ofrecen toda clase de artículos y centros comerciales con marcas de prestigio mundial. Los domingos se despliegan pequeños mercados de antigüedades en el que se pueden encontrar las famosas hamacas paraguayas, los bordados ñandutí (tela de araña), las joyas con filigranas y, por supuesto, los mates en los que se bebe el tereré, la bebida oficial del Paraguay.

Pueblos cuyo pasado se mantiene gracias a la gloria del mismo. Un boom económico que dejó su marca para la posteridad.

Casas abandonadas con techos de calaminas oxidadas y tablas resquebrajadas por la aridez del desierto más seco del mundo. Entre ellas, una fábrica de 40 metros de alto y unos 100 de largo. Luce tan vieja como imponente y desafiante. Es el complejo de lo que fuera la oficina salitrera de Santa Laura, ciudad que junto a Humberstone brilló en el Atacama, en pleno boom económico del salitre a principios del siglo XX. Hoy, estas urbes fantasmales y el pintoresco paisaje que dejó el proceso de extracción de aquel mineral codiciado en Estados Unidos y Europa, son, desde 2005, Patrimonio Mundial de la Humanidad.

A principios de 1900, funcionaban 200 salitreras en los alrededores de lo que hoy es Iquique (norte de Chile). En las ruinas, a través de muros y rincones, es imposible no admirar el esfuerzo del hombre en una época de gloria para muchos y sacrificios para otros.

Actualmente los turistas recorren las maquinarias, casas, hoteles, hospitales, teatros e incluso casinos que otrora hervían de actividad con nuevos empresarios y humildes empleados buscando riqueza.

Abandoned houses with oxidized roofs and slabs cracked from the dryness of the most arid desert in the world. Between them, a factory 40 meters high and 100 meters long. It looks so old as to be imposing and defiant. This complex is what remains of the nitrate office Santa Laura, a city that together with Humberstone shone brightly in the Atacama Desert during the economic boom of nitrate at the start of the 20th Century. Today these ghost towns and the picturesque landscape that was left by the processing of the extraction of this mineral that was coveted by the US and Europe, have been named World Patrimony of Humanity (since 2005).

At the start of the 1900’s, there were 200 nitrate factories around the area that today is Iquique (northern Chile). In the ruins, among the walls and corners, it is impossible not to admire the work of man in a time of glory for many and sacrifice for others. Currently, tourists walk among the machinery, houses, hotels, theaters and even casinos that formerly bubbled with activity of the new businessmen and humble workers in search of riches.

Un siglo después, los pueblos cercanos a las fábricas sobreviven entre la sequedad del desierto y el patrimonio que les tocó salvar. Muchos habitantes abren sus puertas para exhibir los finos retazos de gloria que les quedan: relojes suizos de madera tallada, juegos de té ingleses, instrumentos musicales de la época, baúles con finos vestidos... Son poblaciones galantes y amigables que encuentran en el pasado la llave para, a través del turismo, tener un mañana.

Santa Laura and Humberstone paralyzed their productive activities about 50 years ago. A century later, the towns located close to the factories survive among the dryness of the desert and the patrimony that they must save. Many inhabitants open their doors to exhibit the remnants of glory: Swiss watches of carved wood, English tea sets, musical instruments of the era, trunks of fine clothing…

SER, APRENDER, ELEGIR Cuando supo que estaba embarazada, Sandra estaba segura de que daría a luz a su tercer hijo de la misma forma que a los anteriores: en su casa y con la ayuda de Alicia, su partera de confianza. Pero la misma matrona la llevó a conocer las salas de parto humanizado y allí le quitaron sus miedos: la habitación era parecida a su casa, su partera estaría presente en el alumbramiento y respetarían sus costumbres y decisiones.

Durante todo el embarazo, la mujer tuvo acceso a los masajes característicos de las matronas aimaras y también a ecografías; tomó los tés que según sus antepasados sirven para el buen desarrollo del bebé y se hizo chequeos prenatales con los ginecólogos.

El singular modelo se extiende por todo Bolivia y ahora se empieza a implementar en las comunidades del Beni y Santa Cruz. Comadronas y doctores urbanos participan en seminarios, capacitaciones y encuentros en los que se instala la pluriculturalidad de la medicina. Unos aportan tecnología, metodología y conocimiento científica; otros, saberes ancestrales.

El médico, la partera y el padre trabajan en conjunto en un ambiente amigable, donde se respetan las costumbres.

BEING, LEARNING, CHOSING When she found out she was pregnant, Sandra was sure that she would give birth to her third child the same way she had to the first two, in her house, and with the help of Alicia, a trusted midwife. But the midwife took her to see the humanized birthing rooms and there her fears were dispelled: the room looked like her house, her midwife would be present at the delivery and her customs and decisions would be respected.

During her whole pregnancy, she had access to the massages customarily given by Aymara midwives and also access to ultrasounds; she drank the teas that according to custom are good for the development of the baby and she went to gynecological prenatal check-ups.

This model has extended in Bolivia and now is being put into practice in communities of Beni and Santa Cruz. Midwives and urban doctors participate in seminars, trainings and contacts where pluricultural medicine is created. Some bring technology, methodology and scientific knowledge, while others ancestral knowledge.

Es innegable que la medicina tradicional es más humana; maneja mejor lo relacionado con el estrés y la energía de las personas, y conoce mejor los elementos del lugar. “Juntar ambos fuertes (lo científico con lo autóctono) es lógico”, explica Róger Tapia, director del hospital La Merced, en La Paz. “Nosotros conocemos los cuerpos de las madres, su sentir y lo que les hace bien. Los médicos nos ayudan en las emergencias y detectando problemas”, explica Alicia, partera desde hace 25 años. Es una comunión de los mundos que encierra Bolivia, que tiene como objetivo salvar la vida de los que llegan.

It is undeniable that traditional medicine is more humane; it better manages the relationship with stress and the energy of people and better understands the elements of each place. “Bringing the two strengths together (the scientific with the native) is logical”, explains Roger Tapia, director of La Merced hospital in La Paz. “We know the bodies of the mothers, how they feel and what is good for them. The doctors help us in emergencies and detecting problems”, explains Alicia, a midwife with 25 years of experience. Here, they are joining of the worlds that are found in Bolivia with the goal of saving lives.

Él no se inmuta ante la detonación de la dinamita que suelen usar los mineros bolivianos para manifestar su bronca ante lo que consideran injusto. De allí su nombre: Petardo. Desde que se les apegó en su marcha a La Paz a su paso por una ciudad orureña, el animal caminó, comió y protestó con ellos. Es “chapi”, “cunumi” o, si se quiere, de raza sin identificar. Lo que sí está claro es su valentía y lealtad.

Al igual que sus “compañeros” marchistas, Petardo regresó a Potosí convertido en héroe y tal ha sido el afecto que ha ganado que ahora es todo un símbolo en las redes sociales. La comunidad “Petardo: potosino y federalista” rondaba los 22.500 seguidores en Facebook al momento de escribirse esta nota y más de 8.800 personas se habían suscrito a otro grupo que pide que el can sea presidente de Bolivia.

Alrededor del mundo existen cientos de historias de perros que se ganaron el afecto y respeto de la comunidad donde vivieron. Quizá la más conocida sea la de Hachiko (1923-1935), el

Just like his companions in the march, Petardo returned to Potosi a hero, and the effect has been so great that he has become a symbol on social media. The group “Petardo: from Potosi and Federalist” has 22,500 followers on Facebook (at the time this article was written) and more than 6,700 people have subscribed to another group that wants this canine to be President of Bolivia.

Across the world, there exist hundreds of histories of dogs that earned the love and respect of the community where they lived. Perhaps the most well known is Hachiko (1923-1935), a dog of a university professor who accompanied him

to the train station and waited for his return from work each day. One day the professor didn’t arrive, as he had a heart attack, and for years the noble animal went to the location to await his return anyway. Hachiko now rests next to his beloved in a mausoleum in Tokyo. His story reached Hollywood in 2009, with a movie called Hachi: A Dog’s Tale.

Barry was a Saint Bernard who, between 1800 and 1812, lived in a hospice in Switzerland, helping the monks to assist travellers and lost pilgrims. On one occasion he saved 40 people from hypothermia death. His embalmed body is found on exposition at the entrance to the Natural History Museum in Bern, Switzerland.

Owney was literally “a dog leg.” His fame comes from the fact that he traveled between destinations on many trains and boats at the end of the 1800’s. He was adopted by the post office in Albany, New York and because of the stamps that were stuck on his collar, it is known that he travelled as far as Europe and Asia. The National Postal Museum exhibits his body, together with his medals, and letters received throughout his life.

In 2007, in the subway system in Moscow a monument called Compassion was erected, because the authorities wanted to make commuters conscious about the importance of the humane treatment of animals. The location of the sculpture is where years before a canine, Malchik, was stabbed but survived thanks to the food and love subway workers gave him.

Trakr is a German Shepard who helped in the rescue of victims after the September 11th terrorist attack in New York. The moment when he discovered a live victim under 9 meters of rubble is still remembered today. Presently, this hero is 15 years old and can no longer use his hind legs due to a neurological disorder. Still, thanks to science he will live on in five puppies born through cloning. He deserves to live on, just like Petardo.

De hecho, en cierta ocasión salvó a 40 personas de morir de hipotermia. Su cuerpo embalsamado se encuentra expuesto en la entrada del Museo de Historia Natural de Berna, Suiza.

Owney literalmente era un “pata de perro”.

Su fama se debe a que, precisamente, anduvo por los destinos de muchos trenes y barcos, a finales de 1800. Había sido adoptado por la oficina de correos de Albany, Nueva York, pero por las estampillas que se pegaron en su collar se supo que anduvo hasta en Europa y Asia. El Museo Nacional de Correos expone su cuerpo.

En 2007, en el metro de Moscú se colocó un monumento denominado “Compasión”, con el que las autoridades pretenden concienciar a los transeúntes sobre la importancia de brindar un trato humano a los animales. La escultura puede ser admirada en el sitio donde hace varios años fue apuñalado un can callejero, Málchik, que vivió allí gracias a los alimentos y al amor de los trabajadores del subterráneo.

Aún se recuerda el momento en que encontró viva a una persona a nueve metros de profundidad. Actualmente, este héroe tiene 15 años y no puede usar sus patas traseras por un desorden neurológico. Sin embargo, gracias a la ciencia vivirá en cinco cachorros que nacieron fruto de una clonación. Merece perpetuarse, al igual que Petardo.

La oferta de vehículos es cada vez más diversa, debido a que existen segmentos del mercado que permiten a las marcas introducir diferentes tipos de automóviles. Una de las tendencias es inclinarse por carros de menores dimensiones, como el caso de los hatchbacks. ¿Por qué su buena aceptación? Principalmente por su maniobrabilidad, pues, al ser más pequeños que otro tipo de unidades, tienen una conducción más sencilla y son fáciles de estacionar.

Los hatchbacks son unidades de dos cuerpos: parte del motor y habitáculo. A diferencia de un sedán, el espacio de carga del maletero está integrado al interior y el portón posterior se considera como una puerta más (por lo general, pueden ser de tres o cinco puertas). Con esto se gana más espacio de carga, pues los asientos posteriores son rebatibles. Además, sus dimensiones son más cortas que las de un auto convencional, aunque el interior no necesariamente pierde espacio para seguir brindando el mismo confort a todos sus ocupantes.

There is a continual increase in the diverse supply of types of cars and this is because the market allows different brands to offer different types of cars. One tendencies leans toward choosing smaller cars, such as is the case with the hatchback.

But why is it so accepted? Mainly due to its maneuverability (which comes from the fact that it is smaller than other types of cars), has an ease of driving, and is easy to park.

Hatchbacks are vehicles with two body parts: the part of the motor and the part for riding. Different from a sedan, the cargo space in the trunk is integrated with the interior and the back door is considered to be another door (so in general they have three or five doors). With that, there is more cargo space since the back seats can flatten. While the dimensions are shorter than in a conventional car, interior space is not necessarily lost, and thus the car continues to be comfortable for all the occupants.

Another characteristic of hatchbacks is that generally they have small cylinder motors (between 1,000 and 1,500 cc), which makes them able to conserve gas while travelling in the city.

Concepción basa su economía en la agropecuaria desde hace más de 200 años. Es en ese pueblito colonial colombiano, a 75 km de Medellín, que la gente ha empezado a obviar el uso del dinero en efectivo en su día a día.

Según el diario El Tiempo, los más de 4.500 habitantes llevan algunos meses encabezando un programa que impulsa el uso de los medios de pago electrónicos en lugar del dinero en efectivo, especialmente a través de los teléfonos celulares.

En el marco de la 50va. Convención Bancaria que tuvo lugar en Cartagena, Efraín Forero, presidente del Banco Davivienda, dijo que desde el año pasado los concepcioneños han demostrado que es posible prescindir del papel moneda totalmente. Increíble, ¿verdad?

Concepción ha dado al mundo un ejemplo comercial. Ahora, Suecia y Dinamarca podrían convertirse en naciones sin dinero en circulación debido que, entre otras cosas, la impresión de billetes y producción de monedas ya no es rentable.

A partir de 2016 el Nationalbanken, de la capital danesa, dejará de imprimir billetes, informó el diario The Copenhagen Post. “La razón es que los billetes se utilizan menos en transacciones”, escribió el banco en un comunicado.

El portal Energy Voice publicó que en un escenario semejante desparecería el peligro de fraude con cajeros automáticos (porque sencillamente no existirían), habría menos robos “porque dinero en efectivo es lo que quieren los ladrones”, habría menos ventas de mercancías robadas, no habría mercado negro y, además, “nadie podría eludir las responsabilidades fiscales porque todos los ingresos y gastos serían visibles”.

Sin embargo, la tendencia no se aplica en todas partes. En un artículo para el portal 2 Paragraphs, la jefa del Consejo de Directores del Sistema Federal de Reserva de EE UU, Janet Yellen, informó que los estadounidenses utilizan el efectivo con más frecuencia para comprar mercancías baratas. “Probablemente, esto se debe a que la gente con ingresos bajos no tiene acceso a otros modos de pago”. Pero, entonces, ¿cómo se explica el caso de Concepción? ¿Será que en pueblo chico, la plata contante y sonante no hace falta? Habría que visitar Colombia.

At the same time, in Sweden, 80% of all purchases are made electronically or with some type of card, according to the newspaper, The Local. Swedes use debit and credit cards making on average 260 transactions per person per year.

The website Energy Voice says that the danger of fraud at ATM’s will disappear (because these machines will no longer exist), and there will be less theft in general “because cash is what thieves want;” there will be less sale of stolen merchandise, and there will no longer be a black market and furthermore “no one could avoid his/her tax bill because all income and spending will be visible.”

Nonetheless, the tendency isn’t happening everywhere. In an article on the portal, 2 Paragraphs, the President of the Federal Reserve, Janet Yellen said that Americans use cash to buy inexpensive merchandise. “Probably, this is due to the fact that people with fewer resources don’t have access to other forms of payment.” But then, how can you explain Concepción? Could it be that in a small town, the cash isn’t needed?

El dengue ya no será invencible Dengue is no longer invincible

El dengue no tiene cura. No existe nada que pueda evitar el fuerte dolor de huesos, la fiebre y el gran malestar que produce. Son más de 100 países los que sufren a causa de esta enfermedad; entre los más afectados están los preadolescentes y adultos. De acuerdo con la Organización Mun­ dial de la Salud, en el mundo ocurren alre­dedor de 22.000 defunciones anualmente.

Pero la vacuna contra el dengue pro­mete llegar el cuarto trimestre de 2015 y vaticina inmunizar a la mitad de la población del planeta.

Según la edición mexicana de la revista Forbes, la farmacéutica Sanofi Pasteur lleva 17 años investigando la enfermedad y asegura que ya tienen una vacuna. México, estima la empresa, será el primer país del mundo en aplicarla a millones de niños y personas en riesgo de contraer el virus.

Durante casi dos décadas de investi­ gación, más de 40.000 personas de Asia y Latinoamérica han participado como conejillos de indias, probándose las dife­rentes vacunas y sus reacciones.

Para el profesional, el tema no solo es un reto médico y de salud pública, sino tam­ bién social y de concienciación.

Las causas del aumento de dengue varían entre regiones, pero las más impor­tantes incluyen: falta de control para evi­tar la presencia de mosquitos; cambios demográficos; urbanización descontrolada frecuentemente acompañada por vivien­das pobres, falta de suministros adecuados de agua, falta de alcantarillado, manejo inapropiado de desperdicios y basura; aumento en viajes y comercio; así como pobres o inexistentes servicios de salud pública en pueblos y ciudades.

En Latinoamérica y el sureste asiático, los casos de dengue aumentaron en la última década a causa del turismo y la urbanización descontrolada.

In Latin America and Southeast Asia, dengue cases increased dramatically in the last decade because of tourism and urban sprawl.

But the vaccine for dengue has been promised for the end of 2015, and ultimately they hope to vaccinate half of population of the world.

According to the Mexican Edition of Forbes Magazine, the pharmaceutical Sanofi Pasteur has been investigating this sickness for 17 years, and they say they have created a vaccine. Mexico, according to the company, will be the first country in the world to give the vaccine to millions of children and other high-risk people.

During almost two decades of investigation, more than 40,000 people in Asia and Latin America have participated in testing, as different vaccines and results were analyzed.

In its article, Forbes cites Roberto Tapia, one world’s most renowned epidemiologist and public health specialist, saying “the vaccine against dengue is not going to be a panacea, as the pandemic has much to do with cultural, economic and urban issues; it is even associated with climate change and the excess rain”. For this professional, the problem is not just a medical and public health challenge, but also a social issue that requires increased public awareness.

The causes for the increase in dengue vary from one region to another, but the most important include: the lack control to prevent the presence of mosquitos; demographic changes; uncontrolled urbanization which is often accompanied by poor housing; the lack of water supply; the lack of sewage; the improper disposal of waste and garbage; the increase in travel and commerce; and also the poor quality or lack of public health services. ihasdihfasihfhasihfids 87

CREANDO UN BUEN FUTURO La Asociación Boliviana de Grupos CREA efectuó su segundo Congreso Internacional AB-CREA denominado “Creando futuro”, los días 20 y 21 de agosto en el salón Chiquitano de Fexpocruz.

El evento congregó a más de 400 personas entre disertantes, productores, técnicos, medios de comunicación y representantes de las empresas auspiciadoras, quienes se pusieron al día con el agronegocio global, nacional y regional, la construcción del capital social y el emponderamiento del ser humano a través de la educación. Además se trató sobre la sustentabilidad como producto de la agrobiotecnología y sobre los desafíos y el camino trazado por AB-CREA al futuro del productor boliviano.

Fernando Romero, presidente de la asociación y anfitrión del evento, indicó que “el campo es creador y un motor económico para el desarrollo de la región y de Bolivia”.

Lola Group estuvo a cargo del montaje y organización de esta actividad, que concluyó con un cóctel ofrecido por el banco BCP. EVENTOS Events NACE AMASZONAS PARAGUAY Y ALISTA SU VUELO INAUGURAL El pasado 19 de agosto, en el aeropuerto Silvio Pettirossi de Asunción, fue presentada la aerolínea Amaszonas Paraguay. En esa oportunidad se recibió el primer avión con el que operará la flamante compañía aérea paraguaya en la ruta Asunción–Ciudad del Este. La aeronave fue recibida en un emotivo acto que contó con la participación del director de la Dirección Nacional de Aeronáutica Civil de la República del Paraguay, Luis Manuel Aguirre. El hecho fue calificado de histórico y como un “hito que marcará un antes y un después en la aviación comercial paraguaya”.

El vuelo inaugural de la aerolínea será el 9 de septiembre. Desde Amaszonas Bolivia felicitamos a Amaszonas Paraguay y a su equipo humano por este importante paso para la aviación sudamericana.
