Staple Pieces

The Beauty of a Compact Wardrobe by Keren Ortega

What is a Staple Piece?

A wardrobe staple is a piece of clothing or an accessory that is not controlled by trends. These pieces are high quality, timeless, and can be worn with a variety of outfits. It’s a closet essential you always find yourself reaching for. These pieces are great because they make it easier to pick out outfits and they are much more sustainable than fast fashion trends that create waste and come in and out of style. You’ll always love a staple piece; it will never get old. You can dress it up or down and wear it with a variety of colors and accessories. I like to purchase pieces in basic or neutral colors made of material that I know will last and be comfortable to wear in any weather. When choosing a closet staple, try to keep in mind if you can pair it with a variety of clothes and if you will feel confident wearing that piece.

Staple Closet Pieces:

A dress:

Try wearing a sweater, cardigan, or button up over a baby tee or turtleneck with tights underneath. You can dress it up or down!

Light colored pants: It’s always good to have a nice pair of light colored bottoms to contrast dark pieces. Trousers or linen pants are simple and on the lighter side fabric wise. I like to have a nice pair of light bottoms as a staple because they are so comfortable and breathable.

Dark colored pants: These Y2k low waisted black pants (Wild Fable) Vicktryl is wearing are such a lovely wardrobe piece. I love their shape and these dark pants nicely contrast lighter pieces and look great with jackets.

Jackets: Jackets are not only chilly winter staples but can also bring an entire look together. Ultimately, you should choose a neutral colored jacket you know you will wear. Jackets can really show personality, so choose something that you like. A black puffer is a great standard way to start your jacket search. It is gender neutral and chic, which is why so many celebrities wear it as a winter staple. These are great staples you can wear with lots of outfits and style choices.

Tights:

Tights are one of the more feminine staple items and work with a skirt or dress and chunky boots, Oxfords, or Mary Janes. You can try assorted colors, but sheer black or sheer black with a classic pattern adds a dark but fashionable touch to any outfit.

Cardigans:

A cardigan could just be a light jacket, zip, or button up sweater you wear open. You can choose a neutral color or wear a fun colorful cardigan over a neutral base. They give your outfit a different shape depending on whether they are cropped, longer, or oversized, making cardigans one of the most versatile pieces of clothing on the market.

Long sleeve white button up: This piece is so elegant. It is gender neutral and gives you a clean and form fitting look. You can wear it buttoned up with layers over, by itself, or unbuttoned with layers under.

Sweaters:

Winter sweaters are a closet essential, especially for those with a more masculine style. A simple sweater keeps you warm, can be layered under a jacket or over turtlenecks, and looks good with any neutral bottoms. If you like something a bit lighter, crewnecks are great too.

Choose a sweater made of high quality fabric that you do not mind wearing. You can also wear necklaces over the sweater to give your look a finishing touch.

Jeans:

A good pair of jeans can go with any outfit during any season. It's important to find a pair of jeans that are flattering and fit you well so you can be comfortable and chic.

A Final Note:

When purchasing closet staples, or any clothing for that matter, remember to ask yourself if you will make good use of the clothing piece. Consider its quality along with its price. Are you just purchasing it because it’s trendy, or do you really love it? Will you feel confident wearing this? Don’t forget to follow this year’s trends with our tips and tricks.

Sequins

The History, the Production, and How to Wear

The discovery of of sequins has led to to decades upon decades decades of enhanced outfits thanks to the sparkly quality they can add to everyday and special occasion pieces.

When King Tut’s tomb was discovered in 1922, sequins were also revealed to the modern western world, as King Tut’s burial clothes were covered in solid gold sequins. This launched a sequin craze powered by flapper girls in the 1920s, who were enabled to become shimmery, disco ball like performers. Since the flapper era, sequins have remained prominent throughout history with no end to their

popularity in sight.

How to Wear Sequins

This Season

Sequins are a staple for holiday events. An example of this can be shown by the photo to the right, in which the model wears a Santa Claus inspired sequined skirt. Her outfit is simple yet festive, thanks to the addition of a shimmery skirt which serves as both a skirt and an accessory. New Year’s Eve outfits are perhaps the most commonly sequined ensembles, as the sparkly plastic pieces have been a symbol of wealth throughout history and are now used to “ring in” success in the New Year. This holiday season, consider wearing a sequined dress or skirt with black decorative pantyhose, or even a pair of sequined boots to ensure your success throughout the upcoming year.

The Production Process of Sequins

Fun Facts About Sequins

• In the past, sequins were money and were worn on the clothes for safe keeping.

• In the 1930s, sequins were made of gelatin.

• Throughout time, sequins have always been an example of wealth, fashion, and versatility.

While the sequins found in King Tut’s tomb were made from solid gold, they have since become more easily produced and accessible to average people who were not pharaohs. The 1930s brought lead, paint covered gelatin sequins, but this version of sequins did not maintain popularity for long because the gelatin sequins tended to melt with body heat. Finally, later in the 1930s, the process which produces the sequins we know and love today was developed. In this process, sequins are cut from plastic or Mylar to be multifaceted and therefore, reflective.

Men’s Winter Fashion

inter is here! With the season of winter, there are new trends, new clothes, and a whole set of new ideas for outfits. In this article, we’ll be taking a deep dive into the colors of winter, easy ways to style clothes, and more. We previously discussed layers with lightweight jackets in the Fall Issue. Since winter is coming soon, let’s talk more about heavier jackets for warmth. Typically, in the winter, people style their clothes with a peacoat, letterman, or anything that allows us to feel cozy in the freezing weather. Luckily for us, the letterman is coming back into the fashion world. Usually, high school kids wear their letterman to be casual yet warm, however, due to the trends, we can find new ways to style them and create new stunning ideas for your wardrobe.

The letterman comes in and out of fashion every few years, but due to their diverse colors, we are allowed to experiment with many different colors and patterns for the winter. Take for example the Midland High lettermen. If you take an athletics letterman, they would be gray, and if you were to have an academics letterman, they would be

purple. With these colors, it allows us to style the Midland High School letterman in easy and complex ways that allows us to stay warm.

A complex way to style your letterman would be to explore the complementary colors of the letterman and add depth by creating layers and using patterns to really help diversify the outfit. An easy way to style your letterman would be to put a sweater or hoodie under your letterman that matches. By doing this, it creates a casual yet pleasing look that also allows for warmth. For example, Aidan, our model shown next, styles his black and white letterman with beige accents and a beige sweater underneath to pop the accent color. Aidan creates a matching, pleasing, and fun look by pairing his letterman with a digestible sweater.

Winter Colors

Winter colors are very closely related to the colors of fall. However, the difference between the two seasons lies in the weather and the holidays. These two factors of the season change the colors utilized in fashion. Like fall, darker colors work best for the season. If you want to add a pop of color, red and green work great as Christmas features these colors prominently. Colors you should try to stay away from are summer and spring colors such as pastels, whites, and light colors. Knowing what colors compliment your skin is also a big role in which colors you wear. For example, our model Gus on the right wears black pants and a dark green sweater. These colors match with his light complexion.

On the other hand, our model Zian on the left wears a bright red sweater and pairs it with white pants to pop the accent color. Due to Zian’s darker complexion, the red complements his skin, allowing both the skin and color to feel more exaggerated. This combination allows for colors to shine through and for a simple, yet unique look.

3. Architectural sweaters. Architectural sweaters are just the fancy way of saying a sweater with depth. For example, a sweater with two or more solid colors, knitting styles, or patterns are all considered an architectural sweater.

4. Sweater vests. Sweater vests are easy to style and always look good. Two easy ways to style sweater vests is to put a shirt underneath the vest and let it pop out. For more of a unique look, wear the sweater vest with no undershirt. Either way creates a very consumable look.

5. Baggy jeans. Baggy jeans are super easy to find as they can be thrifted or found anywhere in stores. Match your baggy jeans with an oversized shirt and call it a day.

Trends come in and out throughout the four seasons, and although it’s a hassle to keep up with all of them coming and going, it can be essential in stepping up your fashion game.

1. Shoulders. The concept of broad shoulders is in, so this can be used with shoulder pads or anything that really broadens or defines your shoulders.

2. Leather. Leather can be a bit tricky to create an outfit with. However, once you do, it creates an edgy aura and gives your clothes a new fabric to work with. Starting off with a simple black leather jacket or pair of black leather plants is perfect for this winter trend.

Denim

History of Denim:

James W. Davis, a tailor from Nevada, made the first pair of rivet reinforced denim pants. For the first time, Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss obtained a U.S. patent in the production of putting rivets in men’s work pants on May 20, 1873. From then on, “waist overalls” or “overalls” were a hit. It wasn’t until the 1960s when baby boomers started calling them jeans.

Why is Denim Good for Cold Weather?:

Denim weight plays a big factor into why it can keep you warmer in the cold. The fabric is normally thicker than heavy wools or cotton weaves. It gives it sturdiness and keeps you warm. Darker color denim, like indigo and black, are better suited for the cold weather because the dark colors hold more heat and allow for more warmth. Lighter denim colors are better suited for warm, summer weather.

Denim on Denim:

Denim on denim is a trend in which someone picks out different colored denim pieces of clothing and matches them together. This is a very common style to see now, and it started in the late 1970s and early 1980s which has inevitably stuck. Wearing denim on denim is not only on trend, but it also allows for depth in an outfit and matching sets.

Denim/Jeans Timeline:

What the Models Are Wearing:

The models shown on the left are wearing all different kinds of denims and jeans. There are normal wash jean jackets, light wash jean jackets, a denim dress, dark wash/black jeans, and ripped jeans. All these denim and jean styles are trends people are wearing every day. Jeans from the 1870s have not only come a long way but are still trending today.

Christmas Pajamas

What better way to show your Christmas spirit than with Christmas Pajamas? They are comfortable, cozy, and very fashionable for the holiday season. Christmas PJ’s have been around now for many years, but they have become increasingly popular within the early 2000s. Whether it is matching sets with the family, your lover, or even your best friends, you will most definitely be fashionable for Christmas time.

22| M Mag

Patterns are quite common with holiday PJs, in fact, flannel is most commonly seen and while it can be flattering, it’s also a subtle look. Flannel is mostly seen in a black and red pattern, but colors such as green, white, and navy make a comeback during the holiday season. Although other colors are seen, red and black complement each other all while having a Christmas-feel.

Patterns such as Christmas decorations, snowflakes, and Santa patterns are also seen, making a variety of patterns for Christmas Pjs. With a versatility of Christmas pajama patterns, you’ll be sure to rock the season.

Of course, we have our regular Christmas color schemes that consist of green, red, and white, but it is fun to throw some assorted colors into the mix. Do not be afraid to experiment with unusual colors. Sometimes the most unexpected color combinations are the ones that look the best and can truthfully be statement pieces. You could also always go with the more traditional looks like the white top with pajama pants which is a clean and classy look. Overall, wear what makes you comfortable and makes you feel amazing in your own skin. If you do not own a pair of Christmas Pj’s, we strongly encourage you to go out and buy some. Happy Holidays!
