A Letter from the Editor

The 2022 school year has been filled with nothing but exciting opportunities and successful issues that have shown that student-run publications are possible with a hardworking, and motivated team. Without my team and fellow members, this magazine would not be possible, and I congratulate everyone for their willingness to put aside time and effort for the magazine, whether it be for photoshoots, article-writing, or putting together the issues. While this task is challenging, it is extremely rewarding and has proven to motivate others to do the same. I would like to introduce our final publication, the spring/summer issue, that has been in the works for nearly three months. Our articles include staple pieces, skateboard fashion, swimsuits + how to pack for the beach, student entrepreneur: Chloe Nasuhoglu, crochet, summer athleisure, and summer accessories. With 7 articles, the team has spent many hours writing, photographing, and curating the final issue of the 2022-2023 school year, and we hope you enjoy.

As the school year is coming to a close and new adventures arising, I have chosen to attend Southern Methodist University in the fall where I will study fashion media and marketing in hopes to fulfill what it means to have creative expression through writing, the arts, and media. Thank you all for allowing me to create fashion publications and I wish nothing but the best for our future team, members, and faculty sponsor.

Thank you for a wonderful year, Ella

Staple pieces are reliable articles in your closet that are: creative, iconic, and essential. Spring brings exciting and exhilarating new combinations with clothes such as sneakers. Since the temperature is rising, there is less of a need for clunky big shoes for the winter cold. Sneakers are very easy to style as they match with anything you

own, and are great for creating different unique combinations and aesthetics. Denim jeans are yet another staple piece that arise in every season and work well in any shape or form. You just have to know how to style them and what style fits you and your aesthetic best. The jeans can range from baggy jeans, mom jeans, skinny jeans, or just regular jeans. The next staple piece is lightweight sweaters.

Lightweight sweaters work perfectly because spring weather stays in the 70’s80s’s temperature range. Light

sweaters also come in so many different colors and patterns that can easily be accommodated in different ways. A great reference would be Alfredo's look on page 8. He wears dark denim jeans that are always reliable in any season, paired with a light weight gray

patterned sweater with comfortable Nike sneakers. This creates a spring staple piece-based look that feels digestible, looks casual, and has an overall character.

Lightweight tees are also a great staple piece. They don’t have to be graphic tees, however if you do

incorporate a graphic tee, it can create texture in your outfit that doesn't feel plain and boring. In Sophia’s look, she uses black tee to better display her colorful and airy sweater. It adds depth to the look and feels light and easy going. Another essential piece is rain jackets. In the spring, rainstorms occur most of the season, however rain jackets aren’t just for the weather, they also can elevate an outfit into the next level and look chic doing so. Like sweaters, rain jackets come in different patterns,

designs, and colors that can be accommodated into any outfit. Rain jackets also add layers to an outfit, feeling more exaggerated and adding a sense of texture into one's look. Take for example Sophia's look; she uses all the previously discussed staple pieces. She wears a basic black camisole, layered with a cropped crocheted tied top, with a patterned, light brown rain jacket. She pairs this with dark denim jeans and tucks in her camisole with a black leather belt. In all, Sophia creates a sensible, yet unique outfit. With the multiple layers it feels like a fulfillable outfit that can easily be picked apart and yet so distinct in a crowd of people.

In the summer, staple pieces change due to the weather. Any long sleeves are almost automatically out. You should also strive for anything short sleeve. Just like in the spring, graphic tees are essential in your wardrobe. Due to it being harder to layer items in the summer season, it can be more

7| M Mag

difficult to add texture and depth. However, graphic tees allow for that much needed texture, and it looks senseless and casual. Another staple piece is anything with bold colors. Summer is the season for bold colors like hot pink, yellow, red, bright blue, and many more. Due to this wide variety of colors, anything with these bold colors should be automatically added into your staple piece wardrobe. Along with tees and shirts, crop tops are a great way to be different instead of just wearing a tee. Crop tops add another layer of consistency and you can find them with different colors, graphic designs, colors, textures Take for example, Alfredo’s and Sophia's look. They both incorporate bright colors, however they use different staple pieces creating two different looks. Although they create two different looks, it shows the wide range that one staple piece has and the effect it has on an outfit. The last staple piece in the summer are midi skirts. They are flowy, are very chic, and come in different patterns as well. They are essential in being different in the summer and they allow for differing styles and aesthetics. Once you go to a midi skirt you can never go back!

There are many places where you can find all the listed staple pieces. Most notable are boutiques located around Midland

Some boutiques are Willow, Studio Soho, and Posh Pony. If you're not one for boutiques, Target is a great alternative for affordable clothes that also have notable graphic tees and a wide range of shirts and bottoms that fit everyone. If you're more of an online shopper, Amazon has a lot of great affordable differing options on where to buy these reliable clothes. Staple pieces are essential in one’s wardrobe, so get your summer closet ready!

Summer Accessories

From Rings to Necklaces to Nails & More!

Makeup has evolved dramatically in the last few years. In 2023, less makeup is more. In the summer season, due to the hotter temperatures especially; makeup is less full coverage and more light coverage, opting for more of a natural look. To achieve the light coverage look, one should be considerate with how much makeup to put on. For example, if you use two pumps of foundation; you should either use one pump or use no foundation at all. Although, in achieving the “no makeup” makeup look, you can skip some makeup products; there are some you should always

products. There are some you should always use while creating the perfect look such as: face primer, concealer, contour, highlighter, setting powder, mascara, and setting spray. With all the listed products, it allows one to create a base look that can look perfect by itself. However, if you want to add more products, like bronzer, blush, foundation, or even some eyeliner, just remember less is what works the best for the “no makeup” makeup look! You can find all sorts of “no makeup” makeup looks on YouTube and TikTok.

use while creating the perfect look. These

Just like makeup, nails have also evolved dramatically in the last few years. 2023 has a ton of new nail looks and colors that are trendy, yet reliable. First, let’s talk color. The colors that are going to be the boldest this year are reds, pinks, and even some citrus tones. For the red tone, the perfect reliable tone would be Pantones Color of the Year “Vivia Magenta”. Although the color is considered a magenta, the tone appears to have a red defining color, which allows it to look like a dark crimson red. The second color is pink. When choosing the perfect pink, you should try and stay away from darker pinks and pastel pinks as those colors were used more in previous seasons. When picking the perfect pink, you should have a Barbie mentality, meaning you choose from light pinks to hot pinks. Lastly, citrus tones. Citrus tones are the most reliable tones for the summer season when going bold. They aren’t just a crowd pleaser, but there also a breath of fresh air when going bold. As everyone opts for more of a red or pink, citrus tones will make you pop out. Although, if you do not want to go so

go adventurous with your color choice, milky tones are the best new trendy way to stay subtle, yet different. Milky tones allow one to choose different and digestible colors to feel a sense of a nude relatable tone.

Next, let’s move on to the new trendy looks for nail designs. The first design is the minimalist statements. The minimalist design is very easy to digest and utilizes a sense of elegance. Light designs allow the minimalist statement to feel subtle yet different, creating an easy-going nail look. Although the minimalist nail looks look subtle, they are also elegant and divine, creating an almost royal like nail that feels different yet prestigious. The second nail look is the French tips. Though there are different designs for the French tips, there are two that stand out the most for the summer and 2023. The two French tip designs are the micro-French tips and the regular French tips. The micro-French tips are the new French tips that are a subtle nail that have a minimalist side. The regular French tips are reliable and persistent when it comes to nails,. Although the microFrench tips and the regular French tips are often used for a subtle design; they can be adapted into more of a bold look using the previously discussed colors, allowing the nails to be flexible. The last design is jewelry for your nails.

10| M Mag

The jewelry for your nails look is a 3-D concept that utilizes pearls, silver, gold, chains, and more. The design creates a new way of styling nails using “jewelry” that allows for the nail to pop out and feel bold and different.

In the summer, accessories tend to become more compact and smaller. Whether it is jewelry, bags, or makeup, the items seem to become quainter. For jewelry, one would move further away from chunkier jewelry as it’s harder to adapt to in the summer weather. Although chunkier jewelry could work in some outfits and aesthetics, smaller jewelry is reliable and better suited for the season. Some trendy summer accessories this year are hoop earrings, chains, and pearl jewelry. Hoop earrings are an amazing way to bring an outfit together. They are different and always brings the glamour that an outfit might desperately need. Chains aren’t necessarily a trendy item, as they always are reliable and work an any season, however, smaller chains are the best option to wear in the summer season. Lastly, pearl jewelry is again a relative accessory in any season that allows one to feel more elegant.

Crochet

How to Start, Materials, & Trends

Crochet is IN this season! Mesh patterns in particular are bound for a rise in popularity this summer. Light mesh sweaters create interesting layers in your summer outfits while remaining cool and modest. They can also be used as swimsuit cover ups and repurposed during other seasons. Crochet vests also add a wonderful pop to your closet and can be worn again later in the year. Crochet accessories like headbands and tote bags also

headbands and tote bags are an easy way to step up your style. (The photos below were shot during winter time so you might notice the outfits are rather warm, but they can be replicated with less layers for the summertime). Granny square crochet blankets can make for a lovely picnic blanket and the mesh beach cardigan seen on Merit can be layered on top of tank tops or short sleeves. Of you can purchase or thrift

course you can purchase or thrift crochet pieces at stores like Goodwill, H&M, Pacsun, and American Eagle, but the best way to make a piece you love on a budget is to stitch it yourself!

Crocheting is peaceful, therapeutic, and it is incredibly rewarding to create something you can take pride in. A study conducted in 2011 suggested crochet can improve brain

function, and relieve depression. Crocheting is really quite simple and can be done while listening to music. It is also time-consuming, which can be useful when fighting off summer boredom.

Here’s everything you’ll need to start crocheting along with a brief breakdown :

MUST HAVES:

• A hook: Hooks come in different sizes. Your yarn will specify what size hook you should use for it. You can get plastic hooks, steel hooks or hooks with grips, but I recommend plain steel hooks to begin

• Yarn: Yarn comes in different colors, patterns, materials and diameters. Acrylic yarn is usually cheapest and great for practice, but I like to use cotton yarn when making clothing since it is more breathable and wears less quickly than acrylic yarn.

• A crochet needle: A crochet needle is used to stitch pieces together such as attaching granny squares and stitching sleeves to tops.

OPTIONAL:

• Stitch marker to help you remember important stitches. You can buy these at a craft store or just use a safety pin if you don’t have any.

• A tape measure or ruler.

• Clothing accessories like elastic, buttons, lace, zippers, etc.

• If you are planning to create cute figures with faces, you should invest in eye buttons and embroidery floss for details.

HOW DO I START?:

Ok, so you’ve gathered your materials, what now? The best way to learn to crochet is to see it in real time. Look up YouTube videos and make sure you understand yarning over and learn to do any crochet stitches you might need for your project. It will take practice, but once you get the hang of it, it's muscle memory! There are thousands of free patterns and crochet tutorials online, so be sure to take advantage of these resources.

PATTERN ABBREVIATIONS:

Oftentimes, when reading crochet patterns, stitches can be abbreviated into short letter sequences. While this can at first seem overwhelming, it is really quite simple, I’ve listed some common abbreviations below.

yo: yarn over

ch: chain stitch

sc: single crochet

hdc: half double crochet

dc: double crochet

htr: half treble crochet

tr: treble crochet

dtr: double treble crochet

sl st: slip stitch

cont: continue

dec: decrease

inc: increase

lp: loop

st: stitch

tbl: through back loop

sk: skip

tog: together

rep: repeat

sp: space

ws: wrong side

If you’ve stuck around long enough to read this, I’ve also included a free pattern on how to make a mesh market bag like the one seen in our swimsuit article on page 26. It’s a great first project that makes for a super handy bag!

Section One:

Ch 143.

Row 1: Starting in 11th ch from hook, tr 1, *ch 3, sk 3, tr 1 in next ch, rep from * to the end of the row.

Row 2: Ch 7 (counts as 1 tr and 1 ch-3 sp), tr 1 in top of next tr, *ch 3, tr 1 in top of next tr, rep from * with the last tr going into 4th ch of turning ch from row below. Rep row 2 until you have 34 vertical “squares” to match the number of horizontal “squares.”

Do not cut yarn. Block work. Begin working to decrease rows to cinch the top edge together.

Section 2:

Row 1: Ch 1, sc 1 in 1st tr, sc 2 in next ch sp, *sc 1 in next tr, sc 2 in next ch sp, rep from * across the row. (102 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc3tog across row. (34 sts)

Row 3: Ch 1, *sc 1, sc2tog, rep from * to last st, sc 1. (23 sts)

Rows 4-9: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), hdc across row.

Cut yarn and reattach on opposite edge at the beginning of the foundation (first) chain.

Section 3:

Row 1: Ch 1, sc 3 in 1st ch sp, *sc 1 in ch at bottom of next tr, sc 2 in next ch sp, rep from * across row. (102 sts)

Repeat for 8 more rows along this bottom edge.

Section 4:

Do not cut yarn. You will now work in rounds around all 4 edges of the work to join the bag and add the straps. Begin by working down the side edge instead of back over the row you just worked. Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round. Note that in round 1, the “ch 74” is what creates the straps, which are around 20 inches. (for longer or shorter straps, add or subtract ch sts.)

Round 1: Ch 1, and working into side edge, sc 9 evenly down the side of hdc and sc decrease rows (until you reach the net portion), place marker, sc 3 in 1st ch sp, *sc 1 in side of ch 3, sc 2 in next ch sp, rep from * to end of net portion (102 sc along net portion), place marker, sc 9 evenly up side of hdc and sc decrease rows, ch 74, sc 9 evenly down other side of hdc and sc decrease rows (until you reach the net portion), place marker, sc 3 in 1st ch sp, *sc 1 in side of ch 3, sc 2 in next ch sp, rep from * to end of net portion (102 sc along net portion), place marker, sc 9 evenly up side

of hdc and sc decrease rows, ch 74, sl st to 1st sc at beginning of round.

Round 2: Sc to marker at beginning of net portion, sc 1, sc2tog to 1 st before next marker, sc 1 (52 sts along net portion between markers), sc up side, into each chain, and down other side to next marker, sc 1, sc2tog to 1 st before next marker, sc 1 (52 sts along net portion between markers), sc up side and into each chain.

Rounds 3 and 4: Sc all the way around. Sl st to close off at end of round 4. Secure and weave in all ends.

Skateboard Fashion

The Essentials, Fashion, and Accessories

One of the most essential pieces of clothing a skater could own would be shoes. Skating requires a lot of movement on the board, so you’ll need a good quality, heavy bottom, sturdy rubber sole. Soles come in three types; insole, midsole, and outer sole. The inner layers are responsible for riding comfort and added impact protection, where midsoles work more. Additionally, the outer soles will be your first line of defense against rough and gritty surfaces. For the exteriors, always look for quality suede or leather. These are the two materials most preferred by most skaters because of their classic look and durability. Your footwear needs to be as unrestrictive as your clothes. They have to be flexible to your feet movements so your ankles experience little to no sprain. Vans offer great support for skating with a 7mm thick sole, making them perfect for balancing on your board. If Vans aren’t your preference, other popular footwear would be Adidas Bravada and DS Kalis Vulc skate shoes. What to look for: Gum Soles, High Durability, High Top, Comfortability

Skating doesn’t require a particular style. Whatever you like you should wear is the skater’s mentality. This is where your style preference can kick in and not affect your performance. Although, we would recommend a good quality hoodie or jacket. Keep in mind durability is key- skating can get messy and tear your clothing.

Some skaters prefer pants because they provide additional coverage for your shins. Shorts on the other hand go well for bowl or vert skating as you would feel more flexibility. Knee pads are also great to wear for protection while skating.

While most skaters don’t prefer using safety gear, we still advise beginners and small skaters to use helmets, knee/elbow pads, and wrist guards. Here are a few options to consider.

• Triple Eight Dual- Certified Helmet

• Vihir Adult Water Sports Helmet with Ears

• Thousand Bike Helmet

Another essential for most skaters, music. For safety reasons, we suggest wireless earbuds with just one in so you can hear any traffic or commotion around you, but any kind of headphone will suffice. Here are a few options to consider.

• Sony WH- 100XM4 Wireless

• Creative Super X-FI Air

• Beyer Dynamic Amiron Wireless

• DOQAUS Bluetooth Over Ear

• Airpods

Hats Off to Summer: Chloe Nasuhoglu

Chloe Nasuhoglu, owner and founder of Caps by Chloe, has created a company of her own that has proven to be successful through the use of social media and determination during her high school career. The entrepreneur began her business at the age of 17 after finding a passion for fashion and wanting to open her own company, but because the retail industry is difficult to join, Chloe decided to begin with trucker hats that are easy to sell and make.

Chloe began her social media journey in early high school to promote herself, but once realizing the extent to which people and viewers wanted to know more about her, she knew she had to start her own business. As her social grew, so did her

followers and the attention of companies. Chloe often receives PR packages from numerous well-known companies and promotes this along with herself and company. She also owns her own swimsuit line where she designs the swimsuits and sells them online. To begin the process of making hats, Chloe first must wholesale the

trucker hats. Then, she designs the patches and partners with a local business who creates the patches for the hats. Next, she embroiders the patches onto the hats ultimately creating her iconic trucker hats.

With sales being dependent on the season, Chloe tends to sell the most hats during the spring and summer, but often wholesales trucker hats in bulk during the winter. In January, Chloe wholesaled 200 trucker hats along with personal sales. During the spring and summer, Chloe can get close to 300 orders a month which results in her working day and night and even getting her friends to help. Along with wholesale orders and individual orders, she also creates hats for bachelorette parties,

“My business has allowed me to meet new people and pursue my dream in retail”

creates hats for bachelorette parties, personal parties, and more.

After high school, Chloe plans to attend college where she will study business and fashion & design while keeping her hat and swim company booming. Meeting new people and business owners, working for herself, and creating her own hats inspires her to grow her businesses bigger and pursue her dream in the retail industry.

Summer is right around the corner which means… it’s swimsuit season! The most important part of picking out a swimsuit is making sure you feel comfortable and confident wearing it. Invest in a good quality swimsuit that fits you well. When picking one out consider its color, pattern, wearability, fabric quality, and support. If you have a two-piece swimsuit, you can mix and match sets to create variety. Spring and summer breaks are vacation seasons, so make sure you have a bag to bring along as you travel. Tote bags come in so many designs and are super trendy.

Swimsuits + How to Pack for the Beach

You can even grab a plain one at a craft store and paint it yourself! Mesh market bags make for the perfect beach tote. You can even make one your own using the pattern on page 14.

You’ve chosen the perfect bag, now let’s talk beach tote essentials.

The most important item in your beach bag is sunscreen! Dermatologists recommend a sunscreen with a SPF of at least 30. SPF 30 will block 97% of the sun’s UV rays and any SPF higher than 30 will only protect you slightly more. No amount of sunscreen can block 100% of the

sun's UV rays. You should wear some sort of SPF on your face every day to keep your skin as healthy as healthy as possible, but it’s very important to reapply when you are out in the sun. Make sure to put sunscreen everywhere, including your scalp, feet, back and ears. If you have sensitive skin, like me, choosing a SPF can be a daunting task. Find one that’s right for your skin type and fragrance free. I’ve attached a list of dermatologist approved sunscreens and where to find them.

Best Summer Sunscreens:

• Elta MD UVB Clear- Broad spectrum SPF 46- You can find this at Walmart for around $20 for 1.7 oz (ideal for sensitive or acne prone skin)

• Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30- $16 at Target (super lightweight and great for any skin tone)

• Supergoop unseen sunscreen- $22 at Sephora (a matte finish for oily skin and wears well under makeup)

• Supergoop glowscreen- $18 at Sephora (a tinted moisturizer that leaves your skin with a dewy glow)

• La Roche-Posay Toleraine Double Repair Moisturizer with SPF- $21 at most drugstores (a moisturizer + SPF duo great for daily use)

Bring a towel so you have something comfortable to lie on, a pair of sunglasses or a beach hat to block the sun, and your favorite hobby item! Take a journal, book, or crochet needle with you so you have something to do. (Especially if you’re tanning). Make sure to also bring a change of clothes and a bag designated for wet clothing. Have fun and safe travels!
