RE: Islamophobia In Australia AFIC notes the release of the “Islamophobia in Australia - II (2016-2017)” Report by Charles Sturt University. The Report, which looked at incidents reported to the Islamophobia Registry during this period, noted:

• 72% of victims were women • Of the children surveyed, 53% reported having been subject to an incident of Islamophobia • A significant increase of Islamophobic incidents over the previous period of 2014-15 • 73% of perpetrators were male • An increase in online Islamophobia with links inciting or urging physical attacks on Muslims In an environment that has led to the Christchurch massacre. and an increase in physical attacks on Mosques and community centres in Australia, these findings should be of concern to all Australians. AFIC President, Dr Rateb Jneid, stated “We have been seeing an increase in Islamophobic incidents

and rhetoric for some time now and we are not, sadly, surprised by these findings. The rise in far-right activism, racism, discrimination and the increase in cases of physical attacks is a threat to the social harmony of our country.” Islamophobia is an issue that all Australians should

be concerned about. Everyone has the right to live their life free of such hatred and vitriol. AFIC calls on Australia’s political leadership to stand firm against such actions an to work with the community to introduce policies that will foster social harmony and bring the perpetrators of such incidents to justice.

Grants available to help bring communities together through sport Almost $20 million is now available to help communities promote social inclusion and improve health outcomes through sport. The Morrison Government’s Driving Social Inclusion through Sport and Physical Activity grants program is open for applications from not-for-profit organisations including local community groups, sporting clubs and local government entities. The program is part of the

Government’s $71 million investment in social cohesion initiatives to build stronger communities. Minister for Youth and Sport, Richard Colbeck said the grants will also contribute to the Government’s plan to make Australia the world’s most active sporting nation. “Playing sport and engaging in physical activity is great for our physical and mental health, so we want to make sure more Aussies get more active, more often,” Minister Colbeck said. “Our Government’s national Sport

2030 plan is to make Australia the world’s most active sporting nation, and to do that we need everyone joining in. “We have also invested $190 million to grassroots sporting infrastructure to encourage female participation, because everyone should feel welcome at their local sporting club.” Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs, David Coleman, said getting involved in sport was a great way for migrants to build connections,

improve English language skills and feel more at home. “Sport plays an important role in the lives of so many Australians and is a great way to bring communities together and strengthen Australia’s multicultural successes,” Minister Coleman said. “So many of our greatest athletes have migrated to Australia, and the achievements in sport of people of all backgrounds is a key part of the Australian story.

When humanity disappears and Islamophobia prevails Sheikh Alaa El Zokm

Imam of Heidelberg Mosque

We are deeply saddened that an Australian citizen, a Muslim woman who is in an advanced stage of her pregnancy, a Muslim sister who wears Hijab was physically abused while sitting in a café, simply because of her faith. Yes, it occurred, in Australia in 2019 - in a time when it has become accessible to know about any group and who they are by a simple click on an authentic internet website. We are living in a time which is supposed to be The fact is, that Islamophobia and racism have been increasing rapidly in Australia in the past decade. This has led to this tragic incident with this pregnant Muslim woman just as it led to the occurrence of the massacre in Christchurch. This incident, unfortunately, will keep happening if our community, Muslims and NonMuslims, government, politicians and everyone who is concerned about human rights in Australia do not take serious actions against any Islamophobic and racist behaviour. -This will keep happening as long as there are some destructive people who are dedicating all their efforts to spread allegations about Islam (e.g. claims that Islam is a religion of terrorism and that Muslims are blood-thirsty.) -This will keep happening as long as there are some agendas who put barriers between Muslims and Non-Muslims to prevent them from establishing a common ground based on peaceful coexistence.

They do not want others to see that Islam is represented by the vast majority of its peaceful followers but rather through a minority who may misrepresent the religion and they unjustly state: “Look, this is what Islam is!” -This will keep happening as long as we have some irresponsible media agencies and some politicians who always quote “EXTREMIST VIOLENT ISLAM” while disregarding the fact that the religion of Islam is not responsible and can not be blamed for what a few of its followers may do of misrepresentations and misbehaviours. -This will keep happening as long as we do not have a lot of examples of Muslims who hold the duty of representing Islam and showing its image through their behaviour and interaction with others. -This will keep happening as long as we have examples of some hardliners who are lacking wisdom and having a harsh approach with both Muslims and Non-Muslims. Those who are calling for tensions, clashes, isolation

the era of acceptance, brotherhood and the eradication of ignorance and its practices. It should be the time for nations to evaluate people after knowing who they are in a fair and just way. Unfortunately however, some agendas do not want people to know the truth about others and instead of using modern technology and social means to unveil the truth, they’d rather use these resources in spreading ignorance and fear about others.

from the community and violence with those who live peacefully and safely with us, mistreating them and using Islam as a justification for their behaviour. While acknowledging that these negative factors are playing a serious role in the increase of Islamophobia and racism, the positives of this community are much more and will overcome any negatives. But the truth does not present itself, it has to be presented and held by those who care about it. The truth is that Australian Muslims are citizens of their home Australia, they are part and parcel of this community and they always participate in its prosperity. -Both Muslims and Non-Muslims have to acknowledge this fact while disregarding the allegations of some negative media, some racist politicians and allegations made by some hardliners who all share the false claim: “This is not your country!” -We have to establish more dialogues and gatherings where we can

Absorbing youth… Abdur-Rahman Zyka Imam of Isomer Mosque Lysterfield

Being young and living with people who are young, and seeing the frustrations of parents towards their children: the hardest thing for parents is to feel that their son or daughter does not include them in their lives, and the hardest thing for youth is to see their parents not understanding their needs or trying to give them reasonable solutions to their problems… To absorb youth and win them is not hard and they are always willing

AL WASAT 106 ¿ Rabi al-thani 1441 ¿ November 2019 ‫ هـ ¿ تشرين الثاني‬1441 ‫ ¿ ربيع الثاني‬106 ‫الوسط‬

to give things a chance. They need elders to listen to them a little bit and they will listen in response. We must make youth comfortable enough to be able to talk to us about anything they need and our hearts must have the capacity to absorb our beloved youth no matter how much we agree or disagree with them …. Only then we will be able to take a step forward and build strong bridges throughout our community and give youth the comfort and support they need to go ahead and achieve their

exchange thoughts and let the vast majority of our Australian friends know what Islam is through the vast majority of its followers. -We have to integrate with others while displaying the positive character of the Muslim which aims to remove the misunderstandings about Islam and explain how Islam and Muslims participate in the advancement of Australia and its civilization. And finally, it is the role and the responsibility of every single one in our community that whenever we experience or witness any kind of racist and/or Islamophobic act, that we report such behaviour to the authorities and seek our right legally so that we can document these cases and let the authorities know how serious the issue has become. May Allah SWT protect us all and may He unite us all for what is good for humanity and our country Australia.

goals in life… youth will always be grateful for those who stood with them throughout this hard stage in life. this is the character that Allah s.u.h created in the heart of rasulullah s.a.w as Allah said in the quran that “ It is a great Mercy of God that you are gentle and kind towards them; for, had you been harsh and hardhearted, they would all have broken away from you” surat al ahzab. Anas ibn malik r.a.d served rasulullah s.a.w in his teenage hood and said: “I served Allah’s Messenger for ten years and he never said to me, ‘Shame’ or ‘Why did you do such-and-such a thing?’ or ‘Why did you not do suchand-such a thing?’”. may Allah send peace and blessings upon our beloved prophet s.a.w

The Treaty of Versailles 100 Years Ago and the Kokoda Track Bilal Cleland

dunk1689@gmail.com

The Fourteen Points of Woodrow Wilson, President of the USA, were supposed to form the basis of those settlements. Along with various territorial re-arrangements they included:

It is a hundred years since Australia participated in the Peace Settlements which produced the Treaty of Versailles, signed in June 1919. As a nation we have not come to terms with what Prime Minister Billy Hughes brought upon us all that time ago.

• Open covenants of peace, openly arrived at (i.e. no more secret treaties) • Freedom of the seas • The removal so far as possible of all economic barriers • The reduction of national armaments to the lowest point consistent with domestic safety • Impartial adjustment of all colonial claims • Autonomous development for the non-Turkish peoples of the Ottoman empire; free passage of the Dardanelles to the ships and commerce of all nations • A general association of nations to be formed to guarantee to its members political independence and

territorial integrity (the genesis of the League of Nations) At that time in its history, despite its role in Hawaii, Cuba and the Philippines, the USA was officially, strongly anti-imperialist. Britain and France did not have such qualms and happily became participants in the mandate system and the maintenance of colonial rule. They also managed a major calve up between them of the Middle East and the creation of another 100 years of instability. The vengeful attitude of the victors towards Germany, insisting it pay for the war, is generally held to be the source of the resentment which assisted the rise of the Third Reich. The Fourteen Points were subordinated to hate. Australia was represented by the very pushy Billy Hughes, ardent advocate for war and conscription and fanatical believer in white superiority. Although still only a British

From Kokoda Historical facebook page colony of sorts, Hughes demanded a place for Australia based on his claim to represent 60,000 dead. As the Museum of Australian Democracy notes: “This was the first political treaty signed by Australian officials, and the first negotiated with direct participation by Australian government delegates. This was a major step in the recognition of Australia as an independent entity in international law.”

At this time in our history our foreign policy, according to Colin Baker, was based upon:

• maintaining the White Australia policy; • restricting or preventing Japanese expansion in the Pacific; • keeping the British maritime superiority in our

region, as it was considered that Australia could not be effectively defended once an enemy lodgement on the mainland had been achieved • defining Australia’s place in the British Empire relationship The assertive role of Billy Hughes meant we gained a strategic advantage to our north, the mandated territory of New Guinea which as an independent nation, Papua New Guinea, is still our ally. Most significantly, it offended Japan to a point that may have contributed to that nation being an enemy of Britain and Australia in the next major war. “Apportioning the blame for moving Japan from the position of ally in the First World War to an opponent in the Second World War

is beyond the scope of this paper, but it is my contention that the volumes in the Ursula Davidson collection show it began in Paris in 1919 and that Australia was involved in the process. Certainly, by 1936, Lieutenant Commander Tota Ishimaru’s book Japan Must Fight Britain (Ishimaru 1936) had been translated into English and Japan’s grievances were there for all to see.” [March 2019 Colin F. Baker Journal of the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies, Volume 70, Number 1,] It seems the horrors of the Kokoda Track, costing 625 Australian lives, lead right back to Versailles and Billy Hughes 1919. The author is a prominent Australian Muslim scholar and activist.

NSW & QLD Fires AFIC It is with sadness and concern that we are witnessing the devasting fires in NSW & QLD at the moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with our fellow Australians who have suffered loss in the past few days. Loss of property, livelihood and possession is a terrible thing

but the loss of life is devasting. We extend our deep and heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims of these tragic events. Dr Rateb Jneid, AFIC President, stated “The events of the past few days have been truly tragic and we stand with all Australians in expressing our sorrow and support to the those who have suffered in

AL WASAT 106 ¿ Rabi al-thani 1441 ¿ November 2019 ‫ هـ ¿ تشرين الثاني‬1441 ‫ ¿ ربيع الثاني‬106 ‫الوسط‬

this tragedy.” We also acknowledge and congratulate the tireless efforts of our emergency services and first responders. They put their own lives at risk for the sake of the rest of the community and if not for their brave work then the devastating outcomes of these fires may be so much worse than they

already are. Along with the rest of the country we stand by to offer whatever support we may be able to both now and in the days following these tragic events to help our fellow Australians recover and rebuild. We pray for the continued safety of all involved, both civilian and emergency workers.

What Information Should You Provide?

It is a common experience amongst new Muslims to feel welcomed by established communities. I felt this when I took shahada, and again when I arrived in Melbourne. When we accept Islam there is wonderful sense that we have ‘arrived.’ Yet one of the things that can be obscured by this arrival is the importance of the journey that brought us there. The journey into Islam can be sudden or gradual. For some, it means overcoming prejudices or conflicts from their past relationships with Muslims. For those privileged to receive knowledge and friendship from Muslims, the path may have been easier. My own experiences were mixed. As a young man growing up in Liverpool, UK, I lived alongside Muslims of diverse backgrounds, aware of their different beliefs, but living without antipathy. It was only as a student, living in Hamburg, Germany, that this changed. I was attacked and beaten by a group of young Muslims. After recovering in hospital, I tried to understand why conflict was arising across faith lines in the later twentieth century. In my own work as an academic I completed a PhD on Islam in Germany and worked with community leaders, artists and teachers on a public project promoting deeper empathy between Muslims and non-Muslims in the UK – empathy based on the understanding that our faiths were different but also had much in common. My decision to embrace Islam required me to explain my decision to my ill mother. She raised me in the Unitarian branch of Christianity which honours Jesus not as divine or the Son of God, but as a prophet – a position not so far from our understanding of Isa ibn Maryam and of tawhid. I read aloud from the Surah Az-Zukruf to us both and It was a great comfort for her to hear that my new faith would mean changes, but also a continuity of some of my beliefs in this sense:

ٌ ‫} َو ِإ َّن ُه َل ِع ْل ٌم ِّل َّلس َاع ِة ف اََل َت ْم َت ُر َّن ِب َها َوا َّت ِب ُعونِ هذَ ا ِص َر‬ )61( {‫اط ُّم ْس َت ِقي ٌم‬

1- Your name and contact details. 2- Detailed description of the event including date, time and location. 3- Names of people involved such as witnesses and contact details. 4- Names of NSW Police Force Officers. 5- Any other relevant information.

Sahih International: {And indeed Jesus will be [a sign for] knowledge of the Hour so be not in doubt of it and follow Me This is a straight path}

It is also important to note, that it is an offence under s 167A of the Police Act 1990 (NSW) to knowingly make a false complaint or to give false or misleading information during the investigation of a complaint and is punishable by up to 12 months imprisonment.

In no way should downplay from the importance of becoming Muslim, or the teachings of our Prophet (PBUH). But by remembering the journeys of new Muslims we are reminded that we are not only defined in opposition to other faiths, but also by the traditions and goals we share.

NSW Bushfire Appeal

Raghda Assoum On Wednesday the 13th of November 2019, the Human Appeal Australia team went to deliver aid during the catastrophic bushfires. The team also included Radwan Danoun, the head of the Bankstown Eid Show. At Wauchope the group met with Ken, a deputy incident controller of the NSW Rural Fire Service and SES members at the headquarters brigade, who were on the frontline doing the utmost in protecting homes and people in

battling the severe fires. Hundreds of people were affected by the catastrophic bushfires and evacuated from their homes, were placed in disaster relief centres and in dire need of aid. Human Appeal, as part of its Community Care initiatives, immediately went to the field distributing packages of food, water and daily necessities to help alleviate the community who were severely affected in Taree and Wingham. The locals shared survival stories,

traumatic events that occurred during the disaster, how each individual courageously supported and volunteered to console the rest of the community. Indeed, this generous contribution left a remarkable impression among residents of the affected areas. “We are gratefully appreciated by your team”, said the north coast local hero Gabby Wyse. “We are all a big family, and we are sending you regards and a message from the generous donors of Human Appeal Australia, that we are

standing in solidarity with you at your times of need” –Said Amin ElBureeny, the head of the Community Care at HAA. GIFT OF KINDNESS

Caring for Your Parents:

A Matter of Culturedness By Jamilah Samian

www.coolmumsuperdad.com

I used to assume that adolescence is the period when a person might slip into the dark world of crime, but in Japan, there are people who start stealing food and clothing at the relatively ripe age of 65 plus. These men and women deliberately commit petty crimes, stealing food and clothes to allow themselves to be caught and sent to prison, a rising phenomenon in this country.

Some of these elders were on welfare and did it out of poverty. But some of them steal not out of need of food or shelter. These folks do have family but didn’t feel a sense of belonging, having grown distant from their loved ones over time. Children move to cities in search of better jobs, leaving parents to survive by themselves. For these elderly parents, family relationships are no longer what it used to be. Loneliness, feelings of isolation has become an unwelcome

but constant companion. Family support does not exist. Some have lost contact with their adult children. Some even described life behind bars as an “oasis” where they actually have a community, people to talk to, getting the human attention they crave for. Some have been caught and sent to prison more than once; repeat offenders who deliberately committed the crimes so that they could be sent to prison again. For these seniors, being imprisoned but surrounded by others in the same boat is a better

AL WASAT 106 ¿ Rabi al-thani 1441 ¿ November 2019 ‫ هـ ¿ تشرين الثاني‬1441 ‫ ¿ ربيع الثاني‬106 ‫الوسط‬

deal than living free out there but trapped in your own world. Japan is a country full of contrasts. On the one hand, you have children who are highly disciplined. Clean homes, rivers and streets. Stunning cherry blossoms. Japan is famous for centenarians, people who live well till 100. At the same time, the birth rates are falling at such alarming levels, the young are leaving villages for the cities, villages are deserted, you have elderly parents dying alone, their bodies only discovered later by neighbours or authorities. The number of elders dying alone is rising. Dying is a reality faced by every living creature. But what matters is our living experiences. People who die a lonely death in Japan are becoming less of a rare occurrence. True to its ultramodern status, and recognizing its rapidly ageing society, Japan has invented state-of-the-art solutions, introducing products like wearable sensors which can detect bladder changes to assist seniors with incontinence. These devices might be helpful, but do not remove the basic need for human interaction. I come from a family who do not send their elders to nursing homes where all they have are strangers paid to do the job. A cousin of mine, a retired teacher,

cared for her mother-in-law till she was in her nineties. The latter had dementia, not remembering where the bathroom was. But to my cousin, nursing home was never an option. Whether we want to go down the path of having a society who no longer cares for its aged and elderly is a choice we must make. We are all traveling the same path; we grow older every day. How we treat our elders who might have grown forgetful, incontinent, and down with a string of illnesses is a reflection of our culturedness. Granted, caring for ageing parents might be full of challenges. It’s different from taking care of children. With children, you know they are progressing. Elderly parents, on the contrary, regress. Over time, they probably won’t get much better. You have little idea how long it would take until they breathe their last. But it won’t be forever. Think about the sacrifices they have made for you. Unconditionally.

The “terrorists” revolution in Tripoli In October 2019, broad consensus emerged from Lebanese communities around the world that described the latest upheavals in Lebanon as totally unpredicted and unexpected, specifically because the Lebanese people had appeared strong, patient and unshakable for the past 40 years. Standing apart from the rest of the Arab countries, Lebanon witnessed non-violent, national and peaceful movements, which encompassed all Lebanese people from different sects and religions. It amazed me the unique way the demonstrations challenged the corruption in the country, using chants and national songs echoed by the folkloric Lebanese dance (dabke). This uprising created a multiplicity of new perspectives, fascinating the world with their innovative ways of opposing the government and proving that not every demonstration and anger that the people has the right to express is “terrorism” as we usually hear from our stereotyping media.

Dr. Rawaa El Ayoubi Gebara Sydney Joseph Tawk writes: The “terrorists” revolution in Tripoli! The “terrorists” gather every day in Tripoli. For the past 18 days, thousands of them have stood row upon row, armed with weapons and equipment, their brains awash with destructive and inflammatory ideas. They swarm the Square of Light, paralysing the city with their demonstrations, carrying loudspeakers and expressing their thoughts to the Lebanese people and the world at large, thoughts we ostracise and even hate and fight... “Terrorists” gather in Tripoli every day to reveal to the public the face of their demons, which has been heightened by the media, stereotypes and prejudices. The fishermen of the port, the vegetable sellers of Tabana Market, the chefs of Antique Market who make the Moroccan and bean dishes and the sweets of Shmaisi, the coppersmiths of the copper markets, and the handmade soap sellers of Bazarkan Market, all join together with the pâtissiers of the hill yard (al-Tall), the jewellers and merchants of Azmi Street, and the residents of Jabal Mohsen. Passing through the wheat market and the neighbourhoods on the outskirts of town, they make their way to

I was so proud of the people in my homeland, then I found an article starting with a sarcastic introduction and an appealing title: “The ‘terrorists’ revolution in Tripoli”. This amazing article was written by Joseph Tawk, a columnist at Al Joumhouria newspaper in Lebanon. I decided to translate this article as it describes Tripoli during the demonstration time in a charming way. the Square of Light to join the demonstrations. Others pass by the Castle of Tripoli or over Abu Ali river, with their neighbours from the Street of the Nuns and Church Streets... Once they are gathered, “terrorism” flares up in front of camera lenses and on the phones of enthusiasts. Tripoli... What have you done, Oh... Tripoli? For years, we have enjoyed whipping, stoning, killing and burying you. We have invested a lot of our energy and resources to suffocate, impoverish and starve you; in our lavish suits and ties, we laughed at your brutality and backwardness. Oh... Tripoli... How did you beat your executioners? How did you protest your reality? How did you rise from the dead? How did you arise from the depths? ... And with what capacity and strength have you ascended on platforms and screens to make yourself visible to the public eye? What magic about you has made you vibrant in the hearts of the Lebanese people in the south, the north, the Bekaa and Beirut! Tripoli, tell us your secret of life! By God, tell us, how can a city and its people be resurrected from the dead before the Day of Resurrection? Since 17 October, Lebanon has been the witness to demonstrations and protests throughout all its territories. No region has distanced

itself from its citizens’ anger; however, it was as though Tripoli was on one side and the rest of Lebanon was on the other. Yet, this is not because of Tripoli’s distinctiveness or uniqueness, but because of its people’s ability, who revolted on behalf of and with all Lebanese people, adding revenge to its revolution... In retaliation for all those days that wronged its people and darkened their nights with oppression and the poverty of their days. Revenge for the seasons of nature that did not spare her from rain or sun; revenge for the holidays that passed like sorrow; and revenge for every situation imposed on the city by the policies of starvation, betrayal and intimidation. Therefore, the capital of the north, Tripoli, followed the will of her dignity and not the yoke of her humiliation. We hear revolutionary songs in all regions of Lebanon, but hearing these songs in Tripoli gives off a different scent. We see the same Lebanese flags and slogans in all regions, but seeing them in Tripoli has more profound meaning. The same darkness falls on all areas of Lebanon, but the darkness in the skies of Tripoli is illuminated by loud sounds and swaying lights echoing the pain of its people. Salafists, Alawites, Maronites, Sunnis,

Shiites, Orthodox and secular are lost in the squares of Tripoli, leaning on each other’s shoulders and holding the dress of revolution with their hands, which dances between them. Tripoli has lost the identities and doctrines of its people, so she can be proud of them as one people blatant in the wilderness of corruption. Tripoli lost its people to find them gathered and united in the Square of Light... I found them there to prove to the Lebanese that this arena, which is mediated by the word God – “Allah” is for everyone, in a country where every team wants God on the side of its sectarianism and projects. Tripoli left the castles of Baalbek, Jubail, Carthage, Palmyra, Petra and Lebanese and Arab cities for festivals, and set itself up as a fortress of revolution and a capital of life and peace. It proved to be a city of terror, having terrorised the cities of the Sahel, mountains and interior, and the revolutions terrorised the capitals of the world and its media with their organisation and peace, and the beauty of the paintings they painted with the dances of their voices and hands. Tripoli, we may not be able to pass our souls to you, but we have moved our minds and hearts... And know that you transferred your manners, dignity and grandeur to the home of every Lebanese.

Launched “An Introductory Resource Manual:

Islam and Living in Australia” The Board of Imams Victoria with the support of the Australian Multicultural Foundation are very pleased to have launched a resource titled “An Introductory Resource Manual: Islam and Living in Australia”. The resource was developed after the Board of Imams of Victoria recognised the need to produce endorsed responses and talking points for religious leaders to specific topics which can often be misrepresented or misinterpreted. The 12-page manual will also be a useful reference for media organisations to assist in appropriate reporting on the Islamic community and its beliefs. Dr Bekim Hasani, the Imam of

the Albanian Mosque in Carlton said: “This resource is extremely important as an official source from local Australian Imams that live here and understand the lifestyle. Godwilling, this is one of many initiatives that will help Muslims and nonMuslims gain a better understanding of Islam from reliable sources”. The resource is a concise summary of Islam’s perspective on several important topics such as: • What is the real meaning of Islam?

• Islam and Family • Islam and Violence • Islam and Multicultural Societies • Islam and Volunteering • Prayer and Worship in Public Spaces Executive Director, Dr B. Hass Dellal AO, said: “The development of this resource is not only important to break down barriers and misconceptions but also for young Australian Muslims to gain better understanding on the teachings of

NSW Police Misconduct AFIC notes media reports today in relation to the findings of Law Enforcement Conduct Commission investigation into the conduct of two members of the NSW Police Service. We note the findings of misconduct made against the two police service members on the basis that their conduct was intimidatory, involved abusive language, bullying and was based, in part, on racial prejudice. The investigation followed a complaint lodged by two women of Afghan background who were also Muslim and clearly identifiable as such.

This type of behaviour by individuals who are meant to be a source of protection and safety is appalling and severely undermines public faith in the police service and must be condemned by all parties. AFIC President, Dr Rateb Jneid, stated “No person should be subjected to such behaviour let along women. Muslim women face the greatest level of intimidation and harassment in the current environment and for them to face the same actions from police officers is extremely disappointing.” AFIC calls on the NSW Government and Police Force to ensure that such behaviour is not systemic and that

the individuals involved be appropriately dealt with. All police should be provided with sufficient training covering cultural sensitives, antidiscrimination and anti-racism matters to ensure that those who are the most victimised in society are not further traumatised by the very ones who should be protecting them.

Islam from a scholarly source rather than an unknown and unreliable internet source”. Content of the resource was developed and endorsed by all members of the Board of Imams Victoria. This will be an ongoing piece of work with further topics being added to the resource as identified. The resource is available for downloading on the Board of Imams Victoria website http://www.boiv. org.au/.

WorkSafe Victoria Launches Dangerous Goods Safety Awareness Campaign WorkSafe Victoria Launches Dangerous Goods Safety Awareness Campaign Focused on Workplace Practices in Handling, Storing and Disposing of Dangerous Toxic Chemicals. Strives to increase awareness and encourage the safe handling of dangerous toxic chemicals and eliminate their illegal stockpiling.

Victoria WorkSafe Victoria has launched a Dangerous Goods Safety Awareness campaign to increase awareness of safe workplace practices and regulatory compliance focused on the illegal handling, storing and disposing of dangerous toxic chemicals. The campaign strives not only to increase awareness but also to encourage the safe handling of dangerous toxic chemicals and eliminate their illegal stockpiling. The campaign targets employers, workers and people in the community who work with or live near dangerous chemicals. Specifically, the campaign aims to encourage anyone who is concerned about dangerous toxic chemicals – such as drums or containers of flammable liquids – to report their concerns to WorkSafe for further investigation. The campaign’s key message is, “If you sense something is wrong, say something.” In particular: • If dangerous toxic chemicals are being stored and disposed of illegally in your area or workplace, they pose a threat to the safety of you and the entire community.

• There is no one set of circumstances indicative of “unsafe” dangerous goods practise. If something doesn’t seem right, look right, sound right, feel right or smell right, it might not be right. • If you sense something doesn’t feel safe, call WorkSafe’s advisory service at 1800 136 089 so WorkSafe can investigate. Anyone can call, and your call can be anonymous. A special focus of this multilingual campaign is to reach migrants and those in Australia’s multicultural communities who work in industries with high exposure to dangerous toxic chemicals, as well as workers in the chemical waste processing industry. Campaign materials have been translated into nine different languages including: Arabic, Khmer, Dari, Filipino, Nepali, Sinhalese, Tamil, Urdu and Vietnamese. WorkSafe Victoria believes increasing safe work practices around dangerous toxic chemicals and eliminating illegal stockpiles will lead to safer working environments for everyone. That is why the campaign highlights WorkSafe’s role in regulating the safe handling, storage and disposal of dangerous toxic chemicals.

Small Employers: Know your options for Single Touch Payroll now Over 520,000 employers across the country have successfully moved to Single Touch Payroll (STP) following the 30 September deadline for small employers. Small employers with 19 employees or less were required to start reporting through STP by 30 September, but the ATO wants them to know that it’s not too late. ATO Assistant Commissioner Jason Lucchese said although 30 September had passed there were options available for those who were not yet reporting through STP. “If you are a small employer and not sure where to start, there are three possible pathways to take. You can start reporting now by finding a software solution that is right for you, apply for a quarterly reporting concession if you are eligible or apply for a deferral if you need more time.”

The ATO has launched a video series about small employers and their transition so that others can hear about how they made the move to STP. David Cruz from La Cruzada Cafe & Pizza, from the ACT said he spoke to an accountant to help him with his transition to STP reporting. Mr Lucchese concluded, “The ATO will continue to work with small employers to understand any barriers they may be facing and provide support to help them transition to STP reporting.” “We want the transition to STP to be simple and manageable for all employers, and no penalties will be applied in the 2019 -20 financial year for small employers who make a genuine attempt to transition or for missed or late reporting.” For more information about Single Touch Payroll visit www.ato.gov.au/ stparabic.

Smartphones Addiction part 1

Saied Altabaa

IT Consultant • saied.altabaa@hotmail.com.au

Using too much smartphone can harm our bodies, minds and even our emotions. While technology has the benefits of providing information, connecting people and benefits of making our lives easier, it is a doubleedged sword and has many drawbacks. The impact of radiation waves emitted by advanced electronic devices, as the light emitted from the screen may cause several problems for both the brain and eyes, especially when using the device in the dark, where this type of light causes sleep disturbance and fatigue. Smart phones and tablets cause problems in the neck and spine pain, mainly due to the permanent curvature of watching the screen. The muscles of the hands and arms have a share of these negative effects, as the user can develop carpal tunnel syndrome, which is caused by excessive pressure on the median nerve at the base of the wrist. Excessive use of these devices can reduce user activity and cause obesity. On an emotional and psychological level, mobile addiction may cause neophysics, fear of a smartphone or lack of access to it. Added to these symptoms are depression and constant anxiety about not being able to keep up with everything new on social media. Some training experts said that mobile phone addiction could cause personal crises, depression and increased levels of stress and anxiety. This type of people may show behavioural patterns similar to those who suffer from drug addiction. In fact, introducing these devices into our daily system has transformed our habits, as the mobile phone that is supposed to bring us closer to others is doing the opposite. In general, we stick to our virtual bubbles and refrain from interacting with others in the real world, making us live in complete unity. Smartphone technology and the Internet have contributed to linking people around the world, but its negative effects are linked to the excessive and inappropriate use of this technology. The reason for this is the lack of adequate awareness of the rules of use and its various positive and negative aspects. To avoid this, we advise to take a digital holiday to get rid of technological toxins, by spending a few days away from the daily routine, and away from technology and smart devices, in order to re-link the link with itself, and reduce the levels of stress and fatigue caused by excessive use of these Hardware. In the next article, I will publish some tips how we can get rid of these digital toxins.
