GIFT OF KINDNESS

REDUCE @ WORK FROM HOME By Jamilah Samian

www.coolmumsuperdad.com

In the years I have been working from home, I’ve witnessed how attitudes have swung from one extreme to another. In the 90’s, it was: “You work from home?” (puzzled face, disbelief). Dare disclose you work from home, and be prepared to be looked upon as a second-class citizen of the working community. Those were the days when paid work equalled being employed within concrete confines. One would have thought that, because of Coronavirus, most people would have gotten used to working from home by now. But from what I hear, this isn’t the case. Many still struggle with personal effectiveness even if working from home is a choice they made themselves. Frequent distractions from kids, the temptation to help yourself to leftovers in the fridge, or simply the ambience which doesn’t seem to lend itself to “work”, and social isolation might cause you to be less productive than you expected. If you’re finding it hard to adjust, here are some tips to manage the stress as you work from home:

1. Do the most unpleasant task first. I guarantee, it’s simply

the best strategy I learnt early on. Completing the hardest job first is so effective there’s a phrase for it: “Eat that frog!” When you work from home unsupervised, there’s a natural tendency to do the tasks that you like, and avoid the ones you dislike. The clock keeps ticking until that deadline you’ve been dreading is just a few minutes away. 2. Set a routine. It doesn’t have to be set in stone, but have a routine that works for you. For me, the minute I sit on my chair, my mind instantly knows I’m working. Doesn’t matter if I’m still in my pyjamas. But if dressing up is important for you to get into the zone, so be it.

3. Plan your day the night before. Have a to-do list which you

update daily, so you don’t overlook anything significant. This list will help you pace your days ahead. 4. Be flexible. If you’ve hardly slept the previous night to meet a deadline, allow yourself to rest before starting the next task. An alert brain means higher productivity.

5. Schedule your breaks. Those of us who are workaholics can go on for hours without skipping a beat. But the long -term cost of not having breaks is your health. Sitting down for prolonged periods without stretching creates a strain for the entire body. Muscles need to be stretched regularly, or you could suffer recurring conditions e.g. frozen shoulder (trust me, it’s painful!). 6. Have realistic expectations.

Working from home means saving time and energy commuting to and from work, as well as money on fuel/ transport. Ideally, if you have kids, you’d have a baby-sitter to mind them but if this isn’t an option for you, work around it. An infant or toddler could only last so long in a playpen. Propping a gadget in front of a young kid to distract him for hours isn’t smart either. 7. Exercise. The pandemic has taught us it’s possible to have a good workout within the confines of our own home. You’ll find very doable exercise routines online, such as Walk Walk with Leslie Sansone. Regular exercise keeps your heart

strong, uplifts your mood and helps you sleep better at night. To conclude, working from home has its benefits and challenges. The advent of smart devices has blurred the lines of work and home. “I’d be wrapping things up at day’s end, and in comes a task, due the very first thing in the morning,” says a mother of three in dismay. “Not to mention the calls late into the night. The phone would ring at 10.30pm, just as I’m about to fall into deep sleep.” My advice is, be assertive when you need to. Negotiate, or ask to delegate. “I just got it at 5pm. I need time to go through the document.” Or, “May I suggest soand-so to follow up with the client?” Stand your ground. Burnout is real with far-reaching implications. Be kind to yourself, no one is indispensable at work.

WHY IS HAJJ GETTING SO EXPENSIVE? Abu Muneer Ismail Davids CEO-National Zakat Foundation (NZF)

2022 - Hajj is back… but oh, so Expensive! I originally wrote an article in 2017 as to why Hajj is getting so expensive. Without a doubt it is now even more relevant to try and explain this and dispel the idea that Hajj agents are ripping people off. I am not writing to try and justify the increases in Hajj prices year upon year, but merely to try and give you some insight into what I believe to be some of the main reasons. This is a question I hear all the time and it perplexes me when I find people still saying, “I will wait until it gets cheaper.” In 1989, I paid $2,000. In 2022 you will pay almost $20,000 per person. That is an increase of 900% in 33 years. And not once in the last 33 years, did the price come down. In my opinion I don’t think it will come down next year either. So, what are the main

reasons for such a steep increase this year. As this article is limited in word count, for a more detailed explanation of the price structure, please see my blog article at: www. amidinspirations.org • Mina, Arafah and land transportation in Saudi is the main element that affects the cost of a hajj package and the cost is determined by the Hajj Ministry, which has increased by 100% this year over 2019

AL WASAT 130 ¿ Dhu'l-Qi'dah 1443 ¿ May 2022 ‫ هـ ¿ أيار‬1443 ‫ ¿ ذو القعدة‬130 ‫الوسط‬

• The VAT in Saudi has increased from 5% to 15% overall, which translates to an increase of every element of the Hajj package by 10% • Hajj transportation costs have increased by 10% • Hajj quotas for this year has been reduced by 55% worldwide, which in turn increases cost due to less people but the same overheads • Hotels, though will not have the same demand, has

decided to increase their prices as well • Hajj visa fees have not been determined yet • Airfare cost will increase due to fuel cost and demand Food for thought: Can you think of any precious commodity or item, where the price actually comes down? Also, remember the simple rule in buying and selling; supply and demand. The demand is there and will always be there, so the

supplier will always be in the ‘box seat’. Hajj is no different, unfortunately. I conclude by reminding the reader that this article is not meant to justify the cost, but merely to give you an idea of the large amount of variables that cause the increase in prices year after year. How much do you think it’s worth paying to be a Guest of Allah?

THE SEVEN MOUNTAINS OF CONTROL

A THREAT TO DEMOCRACY Bilal Cleland dunk1689@gmail.com

The seven mountains over which they claim dominion are education, religion, family, business, government and the military, arts and entertainment, and the media. This is an important part of American evangelical Christianity. It is widely supported by adherents of the collection of churches know as Pentecostal. Again, because there are so many different sects of Pentecostals, beliefs tend to differ in some ways. Most of the churches share the belief that salvation is through Jesus, healing is possible through him. Most Pentecostals believe in medicine and doctors, but also believe in divine healing. Most believe that baptism in the Holy Spirit begins when the person begins speaking in tongues. While it’s hard to estimate just how many Pentecostals are in the world, a Pew Research study found that of the roughly two billion Christians in the world, about a quarter identify as Pentecostal. “According to the New York Times, some four million Americans belong to classical Pentecostalism.” [18 December 2018 Christianity.com]

One aspect of Pentecostalism which has caused concern is its neglect of physical reality. Roger E. Olson, professor of theology at George W. Truett Theological Seminary of Baylor University in Waco, Texas writes; “The fourth aspect of Pentecostalism’s dark side is its tendency to emphasize the spiritual over the physical in terms of the Kingdom of God’s “already-ness.” The Kingdom of God is often viewed as present where there is much manifestation of the supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit and many people being spiritually converted and filled with the Holy Spirit—to the neglect of social justice. For most of its history the Pentecostal movement in the U.S. was obsessed with anticommunism as its main form of social activism. Racial equality was not a major focus of Pentecostalism and, in general, Pentecostals have been complacent about segregation—even among themselves. [31 October 2016 Patheos] Whilst primarily an American phenomenon, this variety of Christianity exists in Australia with many high profile individuals, including leading conservative politicians and Prime Minister Morrison. According to Philip Almond,

AL WASAT 130 ¿ Dhu'l-Qi'dah 1443 ¿ May 2022 ‫ هـ ¿ أيار‬1443 ‫ ¿ ذو القعدة‬130 ‫الوسط‬

The seven mountains mentioned in the Book of Revelations in the New Testament are taken by mainstream Bible interpreters to refer to the evil empire on the Tiber, the seven hills of Rome. A minority of Christians, less historically oriented, have another interpretation. A branch of Dominionism, which sees adherents of their variety of Christianity as entitled to dominion over the earth, interprets the seven mountains as aspects of human society.

Emeritus Professor in the History of Religious Thought of The University of Queensland, it is impacting upon the response of the Australian government to key issues. “This is why further action on reducing carbon emissions to counter the environmental damage wrought by climate change may have little intellectual purchase with the PM. If the end of the world through climate change is part of God’s providential plan, there is precious little that we need to or can do about it.” He points out that the “have a go” philosophy of the PM “sits squarely within Pentecostal prosperity theology.” This is the view that belief in God leads to material wealth. “… the godly become wealthy and the wealthy are godly. And, unfortunately, the ungodly become poor and the poor are ungodly.” “Only those who have been saved by Jesus (generally those who have had a personal experience of being “born again”…have any hope of attaining eternal life in heaven.” … Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, atheists, and non-born-again Christians are doomed to spend an eternity in the torments of hell.” [23 May 2019 Conversation]

Steve Davies in “Stripping away the veil” warns about one extreme aspect of the Seven Mountains Mandate, the Extreme World Makeover. The Extreme Makeover Sermon indicates how takeover will occur: “No the whole deal is, again, he has told satan I am going to do this great thing with my sons and daughters. They are going to awake; they are going to arise, and they will begin to shine. And they will operate in my light in my authority and my power and they will change everything. I will not have to exert my own direct muscle. They will carry my muscle. They will cr*sh you.” According to Davies, “The zeal with which the Morrison Government is pursuing its agenda and the agenda of the government itself, are a reflection of the Extreme World Makeover.” [13 February 2020 AIM Network] David Donovan in “Morrison and the secret Pentecostal plan for world domination,” points out: “Last week, we heard that NSW Nationals candidate. Kimberley Hone was a supporter of the Seven Mountains Mandate. The WA Liberal candidate for Pearce Linda Aitken is also believed to be a Seven Mountains Mandate supporter. Prime Minister Scott Morrison is a Pentecostal. So is his best

friend, Stuart Robert a Gold Coast Pentecostal.” [3 May 2022 Independent Australia] Given the increasing numbers of this sect, all people of good will would do well to be aware of this intent to exercise dominion over the seven mountains. Attempts to influence academic curricula, political parties, community organisations, social policy and government will go on. The subjugation of society to such an interpretation of Christian scripture would destroy any notion of participatory democracy, multiculturalism or religious freedom. It is basically medieval totalitarianism.

Annual Youth Leaders Multicultural Iftar

Activate Youth (AY) hosted the Annual Youth Leaders Multicultural Iftar, in collaboration with the Board of Imams Victoria (BOIV) on the 24th of April 2022. The soldout event had over 120 participants from all across Melbourne to discuss relevant issues in the community. Our President and Co-Founder Dr. Aaqil Rifai addressed the audience by highlighting the objectives within AY, the importance of collaboration and the purpose of the event,

informing that it is a dialogue, an occasion to come together with the aim of closing the gap between the youth, the elders, and community leaders. This year, we set a platform to reflect and find tangible solutions by writing down key points of discussion and build a better future for Multicultural Australia. The Secretary of the BOIV, Sh. the services that BOIV offers, including Marriage Registrations, Couple and Family Counselling, and Inherentance and Islamic Wills. We were pleased to have the Youth Commissioner, Luna Folly and Deputy Commissioner, Bwe Thay from the Victorian Multicultural Commission attend the iftar. Luna made reference to the significance of engagement within the multicultural community to enhance social integration.

The facilitators ranged from expert professionals and faith leaders to cater for conversations such as Islamophobia, Marriage, Youth Leadership and Interfaith Faith Engagement, primarily to engage a youth-led perspective. Activate Youth will continue to empower, lead, and inspire the next generation of Australian Multicultural Muslims by creating shared experiences to establish a sense of belonging.

Committee investigates protections for embedded network customers The Committee on Law and Safety is conducting an inquiry into embedded networks in NSW, Mr Ray Williams MP, Chair of the Committee, announced today. Private electricity and gas networks, known as embedded networks, supply many NSW residents and business with energy and hot water. However, some residents are finding the cost of these embedded network services are very high. Sites often include apartment blocks and caravan parks. “People living in apartments are having to pay hundreds of dollars per month for hot water”, said Mr Williams. “This could indicate there is a gap in consumer protection laws, and that vulnerable consumers are being left out in the cold”. The Committee will look into the current legal framework regulating embedded networks, as well the changes proposed by the Australian Energy Market Commission in 2019 to that framework.

Mr Williams stated: “The high costs paid by customers in embedded networks impacts their access to affordable and reliable energy and hot water. Customers in embedded networks should not be worried about whether or not they can afford to heat water or cool their homes. Access to affordable and dependable energy and hot water is essential to people’s health and safety”. The effect of embedded networks on residents and businesses will be examined by the Committee. It will also consider potential policy and legal solutions to address concerns about embedded networks, including any gaps in the regulatory framework. More information, including the inquiry’s terms of reference and how to make a submission, is on the Committee’s webpage. Submissions to the inquiry close on 24 June 2022.

NEW SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR MUSLIM STUDENTS A new scholarship opportunity for Australian Muslim students offered through the Islamic Museum of Australia’s Patrons was announced today. The Australian Muslim Academic Scholarship (AMAS) Program is a partnership between the Islamic Museum of Australia and universities across Australia including La Trobe University, the University of South Australia, Edith Cowan University, Western Sydney University and the University of Queensland. The aim of the program is to provide development opportunities for all future Islamic leaders across Australia, ensuring gender equality and equal opportunity to all. The program will support Year 12 graduates with high academic merits and/or young working professionals with leadership qualities to obtain graduate and/or postgraduate qualifications through one of our preferred university partners. Islamic Museum of Australia Patron’s Chairperson Mr Khalil Shahin AO said the Fund hopes to offer ten scholarships valued at $10,000 each in its inaugural year. “We’re committed to supporting students who experience barriers in their academic journey. The national approach is fundamental to reaching students who would benefit the most. To that end, we’re very pleased to work with universities in five states.” Islamic Museum of Australia Chairperson Azmeena Hussain OAM said she’s excited to see applications from people of diverse backgrounds. “This scholarship is for students who demonstrate strong leadership skills and academic performance, but who may also experience socio-economic barriers in their learning journey. Too often we see people from CALD communities miss out on academic opportunities for reasons that are out of their control, the scholarship contributes to correcting this issue,” said Ms Hussain. The partner universities echo their support for the national approach and a dual selection focus of academic merit and equity. More information about the AMAS Program is available from amasp.org.au

HALAL ISSUE

PROHIBITED CATEGORIES OF

FOOD AND DRINKS IN ISLAM PART VII

Amphibians (Animals that live both on land and in water) Amphibians are a class of cold-blooded vertebrates made up of frogs, toads, salamanders, newts, and caecilians (wormlike animals with poorly developed eyes). All amphibians spend part of their lives in water and part on land, which is how they earned their name ‘amphibian,’ which comes from a Greek word meaning ‘double life.’ These animals are born with gills, and while some outgrow them as they transform into adults, others retain them for the rest of their lives.

There are no clear rulings in the Holy Quran or Hadith literature in regards to this category of

animals. Muslim Scholars derived their opinions based on analogy (Qiyas) and from the related teachings of the Prophet(peace be upon him) There is a difference of opinion among the schools of thought regarding this category of animals. The Hanafi and Shafi schools regard all the animals from this category (amphibians) to be prohibited (haram) and also to be impure. The Maliki school considers all animals from this category to be halal based on the verse in the Quran: “Say, “I do not find within that which was revealed to me [anything] forbidden to one who would eat it unless it be a dead animal or blood spilled out or the flesh of swine - for indeed, it is impure - or it be [that slaughtered in] disobedience, dedicated to other

than Allah…” (Quran 6:145) They applied the same logic to fanged and carnivorous animals. The Hanbali school of thought has a middle position regarding this category. They consider crocodiles and all other animals from this category who has fangs to be prohibited from consumption. All scholars consider it a prohibition to eat frogs due to the juristic rule that everything which has been forbidden to be killed is [also] forbidden to be eaten since if it were permissible to consume it, it would also be permissible to kill them. This is based on the hadith which was narrated by Abu Hurayra that “The Messenger of Allah(peace be upon him) forbade killing shrikes*, frogs, ants and hoopoes.” (Ibn Majah) Based on the series of these articles: Prohibited Categories of Food and Drinks in Islam, the term ‘Halal’ can be used for food that

is considered to be lawful in our religion. Islam subscribes to the principle of universal permissibility about food except for the following sources, including their products and derivatives which are considered to be unlawful (haram).

SA JOINS THE WORLD IN CELEBRATING CULTURAL DIVERSITY AL WASAT 130 ¿ Dhu'l-Qi'dah 1443 ¿ May 2022 ‫ هـ ¿ أيار‬1443 ‫ ¿ ذو القعدة‬130 ‫الوسط‬

South Australia is proud to be home to people from more than 200 culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and our multicultural community in this state joins the world in celebrating “World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development”. Held every year on the 21st of May, UNESCO leads a celebration of the richness of the world’s cultures and the essential role of intercultural dialogue for achieving peace and sustainable development. UNESCO stated that three-quarters of the world’s major conflicts have a cultural dimension. Bridging the gap between cultures is necessary for peace, stability and development. Cultural diversity is a driving force of development, not only with respect to social progress and economic growth, but also as a means of leading a more fulfilling life. The pandemic has proven the intrinsic value of the cultural and creative sector at generating social cohesion, educational resource or personal well-being in times of crisis. “I am proud that the former Liberal Government introduced the landmark new multicultural legislation for South Australia that passed Parliament on 2 December 2021,” Shadow Minister for Multicultural South Australia Jing Lee said. “South Australia has become the first state in Australia to incorporate “interculturalism” into the Act and the centrepiece of the new legislation is the South Australian Multicultural Charter which will pave the way for a stronger

Shadow Minister for Multicultural South Australia Jing Lee and dynamic inclusive society. “Also, for the first time, our First Nation peoples are recognised by the Parliament of South Australia and incorporated in the South Australian Multicultural Act 2021. “It’s a great privilege to work with so many hardworking and inspiring community leaders, members and volunteers of our multicultural community. “During National Volunteer Week, I also want to acknowledge the thousands of volunteers within our diverse communities who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help those in need.”
