30 years of spreading joy with your Millions of Muslims from all over the world are heading to Umm Al-Qura (Mecca) as guests of Al-Rahman to perform Hajj and spend the day in Arafat in prayers. On the day of Eid they sacrifice their Qurban following the footsteps of Prophet Ibrahim PBUH. Pilgrims hope that Allah (SWT) accepts their good deeds and be rewarded. Muslims around the globe also gratefully sacrifice their Qurban obeying Allah’s command and generously donate towards the hungry, poor and needy.

What is meant by Udhiyah (sacrifice)? Is it obligatory or Sunnah? The word udhiyah (Qurban) means an animal of the An’aam class (i.e., camel, cow, sheep or goat) that is slaughtered during the days of Eid al-Adha and as an act of worship, intending to draw closer to Allah (SWT) thereby. This is one of the rituals of Islam prescribed in the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and according to the consensus of the Muslims.

In the Quran, Allah SWT says: “So pray to your Lord and offer sacrifice [to him alone].” Al-Kawthar (108:2)

In the Sunnah: It was narrated that ‘Abd-Allah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) stayed in Madinah for ten years, offering sacrifice (every year on Eid).”

Human Appeal Australia invites you to increase your rewards during this blessed occasion by donating your Qurban to the poor and bring happiness into their lives.

- Narrated by Ahmad During Eid al-Adha of every year for the last 30 years, Human Appeal Australia implements the Qurban project campaign. It is a significant project that offers the opportunity for the Australian Muslims to donate their Qurban. On their behalf, Human Appeal purchases, sacrifices, sends and distributes Qurban to beneficiaries in 27 destinations to benefit the poor, the needy, the displaced and the refugees. The meat is distributed fresh, hard- frozen or canned to make it more affordable and accessible for local people. We endeavour to get the healthiest of all available animals and in order to benefit the local economy, we always purchase meat from local suppliers and distribute to the poor and needy. In 2021, we hope to reach more people around the world with the meat of Qurban. We desire to do much more, but this cannot be achieved alone without your help.

BUILDING COMMUNITY IN ISLAMIC SCHOOLS: A compelling approach to tackling the challenges facing young Muslims in Australia

Dr Nada Ghamra-oui Director: NNG Educational Consultancy nada@nngeducationalconsultancy.com.au

Challenges of Young Muslims in Australia Young Muslims in Australia share similar interests and challenges of other youth. They are also beset with complexities that are uniquely theirs, both external and within. Racism, exclusion and stigmatisation, their demonisation as potential terrorists, experiences of being an outgroup alongside personal intergenerational conflict and poor leadership has an impact on Australian Muslims’ perception of themselves. Seeing their religion vilified as they grow up in an Australian society, escalating attacks on Muslims globally and lack of acceptance raise questions relating to wellbeing and identity. The search for the restoration of justice in culturally congruent

I was recently posed with a two-tiered question about the challenges facing young Australian Muslims and what Islamic schools can do to address them. Having been an insider leader of one, a mother of four graduates and outsider researcher recently, I have experience and understanding of Islamic schools and the broader challenges confronting young lives as they negotiate religious and cultural divides alongside gender, familial and other intersecting identities. Where does my assessment begin? Achievement? Test scores? Relationships? Employment? OR Racialisation? Disengagement? Belonging? Agency? What follows is an attempt, albeit a brief one, to provide a snapshot of the challenges experienced by Muslim youth in the public domain. Islamic schools as a constructive alternative to the needs and motivations of Muslim students, follows. Last, I explore the notion of building “community” in schools as a compelling approach to responding to the concrete realities of students.

educative environments becomes ever so pressing, one that is akin to survival. For parents who are navigating the educational market space, they are looking for schools that counter the unique circumstances facing them. In an ambivalent social backdrop, lack of parity, constrained opportunities for social participation and access have recast attention towards Islamic schools as a constructive alternative.

Islamic schools as a constructive alternative International scholars of Islamic schools, including Merry, Zine and Shah agree that in the face of the marginalised Muslim community, Islamic schools are a justifiable response to social inequality and educational disadvantage. My own research shows that an assessment

AL WASAT 120 ¿ Dhul Qa'dah 1442 ¿ June 2021 ‫ هـ ¿ حزيران‬1442 ‫ ¿ ذو القعدة‬120 ‫الوسط‬

of the readily available resources at the schools’ disposal, specifically that of staff and their knowledge, the ability to provide an Islamic environment and a contextually relevant curriculum, then Islamic schools are in a unique position to provide inclusive and enabling conditions. But foremost amongst these is opportunity. Islamic schools are governed by an Islamic philosophy of education and educational policy frameworks. Both steer the schools’ functions. Both speak to and provide the tools needed to face complexities of our times. As for the former, Islamic education compels Islamic schools to demonstrate responsiveness to the needs, aspirations and hopes of students. The schools’ claims to provide an education that is underpinned by Islamic principles suggests that not only do Islamic schools deliver a curriculum and school environment that is informed

by Islamic ethics and morality but that learners are provided with the skills, knowledge and critical dispositions to make representations and astutely challenge and proactively engage with systemic injustices and inequalities. Similarly, emphasising wellbeing and how it can affect students’ engagement and success in learning, the National Safe Schools Framework (DET, 2016) and the New South Wales Wellbeing Framework for Schools (DoCS, 2015) make it incumbent upon schools to fully engage: “Educators need to understand the potential wellbeing has to bring about positive change… and how it can become a powerful force in students’ learning…” (DoCS, 2015, p. 2). Here, schools and educators are charged with understanding the realities confronting young lives and act accordingly.

International scholars of Islamic schools, including Merry, Zine and Shah agree that in the face of the marginalised Muslim community, Islamic schools are a justifiable response to social inequality and educational disadvantage.

Building community in Islamic schools? One compelling approach to strengthening students’ social, emotional, spiritual, physical and cognitive wellbeing in Islamic schools is through a concerted focus on creating community. According to Merry (2007), “a strong sense of identity that has established roots and finds support in a much broader community…can be a wonderful resource for combating prejudice, stereotyping and maltreatment” (p. 97). Indeed, community in schools yields success and effectiveness. In Building Community in Schools, Sergiovanni (1994) notes that instead of relying on external control measures, communities rely more on norms, purposes, values, professional collegiality and natural

interdependence. Shared values, beliefs, faith commitments and connections are central to creating community. They are ties that bind students, parents, teachers and leaders. Relationships are the crux of community. It is through the creation of a positive school culture that fosters and nurtures connections with families, students and wider community that schools can flourish in all aspects of school life, not only in test scores but in overcoming the challenges of students. Importantly, community can help teachers and students be transformed thus providing them with a unique and enduring sense of identity, belonging and place. So what does building community look like in your Islamic school? How can religious practice and those

emerging from a secular educational one coalesce to bind a community? I ask this because every Islamic school context hosts different cultural groups, sects and has variant needs. Also, it is the teacher practitioners who have deep insights of students’ realities that have much to contribute, as do the parents. The voices of students whose future trajectories are being shaped are of fundamental significance. Towards these ends, much can be learned from teachers and schools networking. On a final note, complex educational issues compel leadership action. But this is a topic for another day. Please contact the author to access a list of references.

TACKLING RACISM: BACKING COMMUNITIES AND DRIVING RESPECT VIC The Victorian Government is supporting multicultural and multifaith communities to tackle racism through funding for local anti-racism initiatives and the establishment of a

landmark Anti-Racism Taskforce. Minister for Multicultural Affairs Ros Spence today announced 42 community organisations will share in more than $3.8 million to boost cross-cultural understanding across Victoria. Non-profit organisation Youth Activating Youth will use $110,000 to increase young people’s knowledge of their rights in the face of racism, while the Tenants Union of Victoria will receive $70,000 to empower the South Sudanese community to combat racism in the rental housing market. Funding of $100,000 will help Rumbalara Football Netball Club, in partnership with the Kaiela Institute, to deliver courses that improve understanding of Indigenous culture and reduce racism in the Goulburn Valley, while Ballarat Regional Multicultural Council will receive $70,000 to deliver anti-racism and bystander training. For a full list of recipients, visit vic. gov.au/local-anti-racism-initiatives-

grants-program. Minister Spence, along with Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Gabrielle Williams, also announced the establishment of an Anti-Racism Taskforce to lead development of a whole-of-government Anti-Racism Strategy to proactively address race and faith-based discrimination in Victoria, considering issues such as unconscious bias, privilege, and how race intersects with other forms of discrimination. Eleven community members with diverse experience will sit on the Taskforce, alongside representatives of the Victorian Multicultural Commission and Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission. The Taskforce will be co-chaired by Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs and Member for Sunbury Josh Bull and Member for Northern Metropolitan Region and proud Yorta Yorta woman Sheena Watt. It will consult directly with

communities – ensuring a diversity of voices and perspectives help shape our strategy to a stronger, fairer state. To learn about the taskforce, visit vic.gov.au/anti-racismtaskforce. “Racism has no place in Victoria. Tackling it head on is vital to building a stronger, fairer society.” “The Government and the Taskforce will work with communities to ensure the Anti-Racism Strategy represents the diverse views of Victorians.” Minister for Multicultural Affairs Ros Spence said. “We know that racism against First Nations people continues – we are supporting communities to address the problem at the local level and build a more equal Victoria.” “The voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities will play a critical role in shaping Victoria’s new Anti-Racism Strategy.”Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Gabrielle Williams said.

Courage to Care launches Upstander Program for Middle Years Students For close to 30 years, Courage to Care has proudly been delivering Upstander Programs to Secondary School students, educating about the dangers of racism, prejudice, discrimination and bystander behaviour. Hate speech and racial violence are on the rise across the world and, worryingly, it’s growing in Australia too. It’s on our very own doorstep. From white supremacist rallies to targeted racial

attacks, the trend is impossible to deny. That’s why it feels so overwhelming. And at times, insurmountable. But the solution is clear – and it always has been: EDUCATION. By educating tomorrow’s generation about the dangers of racism, prejudice and intolerance, we can create a world of Upstanders. Everyday people who speak up, act with courage and create real change.

And there’s no doubt that the younger the children, the more impactful this education becomes. That’s why Courage to Care is now launching Middle Years Upstander Program specifically designed for students in Years 5, 6 and 7. This new, age-appropriate Upstander Program is already receiving excellent feedback from educators. Which means the word is out there, with demand from schools across the state climbing by the day.

New tool reduces exercise risks for kids Exercise and health researchers and students from The University of Western Australia have contributed to the development and evaluation of a screening tool to prevent exerciserelated risks and adverse events among children. The newly launched PreExercise Screening System for Young People aims to identify young people aged between five and 17 who

may have medical conditions which put them at a higher risk of an adverse event during physical activity. Based on responses to a questionnaire, the tool acts as a ‘safety net’ to help exercise leaders or providers determine if there are any potential immediate risks to participation which should be considered before engaging in physical activity. Accredited exercise physiologist Dr Bonnie Furzer, from UWA’s School

AL WASAT 120 ¿ Dhul Qa'dah 1442 ¿ June 2021 ‫ هـ ¿ حزيران‬1442 ‫ ¿ ذو القعدة‬120 ‫الوسط‬

of Human Sciences, said although screening programs that aimed to minimise risks among adults were commonly used, there was no such tool for children. “The risk of exerciserelated injury among young people is lower than adults but there are still risks for some children, so the tool is designed to minimise harm wherever possible,” Dr Furzer said. “The tool uses medical history information, such

as if the young person has anaphylaxis, to make an evaluation and comes with a user guide which enables all exercise professionals to implement it.” Dr Furzer chaired the committee that developed the tool and said the system was built in consultation with industry bodies, including Sports Medicine Australia, Fitness Australia and Exercise & Sports Science Australia. UWA Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology graduate and Thriving Program Coordinator Tony Ton acted independently from the tool developers to evaluate the effectiveness of the screening system. “There is such a strong advocacy for exercise among young people, but at the same time there is no

safety net that ensures safe participation,” Mr Ton said. “This tool has the potential to be that safety net and prevent kids from experiencing injuries.” In 2019, the Adult PreExercise Screening System was updated, acknowledging the need to adopt a global approach to pre-exercise screening. From there, the need to develop a similar screening system specific to children and young adults became the new focus. Dr Furzer hopes the screening system for children will be rolled out across Australia and used in schools, gyms, fitness facilities and other venues where kids are doing exercise.

Chris Minns Voted to be the New NSW Labor Leader

Farewell, Dear Duncan SHAZMA GAFFOOR

SHAZMA GAFFOOR Chris Minns has been unanimously elected as the new NSW Labor party leader. The 41-year-old was nominated unchallenged when leadership rival, Michael Daley, withdrew from the race. The Labor leadership election came at the back of Jodi McKay’s resignation, who stated that it was the only way for the Party to be reunited. Mr Minns says he is “humbled” to take on the “very difficult” job to lead the New South Wales Labor party, as they make way to oust the Liberal government at the 2023 state elections. The Kogarah MP prefers to provide a positive vision of the state’s future rather than criticising the Coalition government. His focus will be on domestic manufacturing, well-paid regional jobs, and the cost of living in NSW. Mr Minns entered NSW Parliament in 2015 and has most recently been Labor’s transport spokesman. He had also twice previously contested for the leadership of the party.

It is with immense sadness that we bid Queensland Labor MP, Duncan Pegg, a final goodbye. Mr Pegg lost his battle to cancer just seven weeks after he announced he was retiring from politics to focus on his health. Mr Pegg joined the Australian Labor Party at the age of 17 before graduating from Griffiths University where he completed a law and commerce degree. The 40-year-old is the oldest of five boys, raised and schooled in Rockhampton, Queensland. The Labor politician was known for his love of community. He was a passionate advocate for the rights and needs of his local electorate, Stretton, where he was elected in 2015. Mr Pegg forged deep bonds with the local multicultural communities and advocated for them against injustices and discrimination. His biggest passions were fighting for the rights of workers and supporting local schools. In 2017, Mr Pegg was awarded the Queensland Public Service Award from the Queensland Intercultural Society for his community work. While in

parliament, Mr Pegg served as a member of several committees including the Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Crime and Corruptions Committee as well as Member of the Ethics Committee. We would like to express our deepest condolences to Mr Pegg’s family, friends, and colleagues. It is an incredible loss for our community, and he will be dearly missed. The Labor government has since chosen James Martin as the successor for the seat of Stretton for the upcoming bielection 2021.

HALAL ISSUE

ICCV ISLAMIC COORDINATING COUNCIL OF VICTORIA

ICCV certifies halal products from australia to all countries around the world

THE SOURCE OF FOOD INGREDIENTS IN ISLAM Food ingredients are one of the most complicated subjects in relation to Halal food in Islam, especially for the Muslim community living in the west. It is often difficult to classify processed food as strictly Halal, or Haram because of the ingredients they contain. Therefore, it is important to check the product’s label, or packaging to see if it is Halal Certified (Foods that carry a Halal symbol on their packaging have been approved by a Certification Body and are certified to be free of any forbidden components, or ingredients). If no Halal Certification is specified on packaging, a Muslim must verify the list of ingredients to check for Haram, or forbidden ingredients. In Australia, the majority of food companies do not place the Halal logo on their label in the domestic market. It should be noted also that products, which are imported from a Muslim country, are not necessarily Halal, or Halal suitable. Ingredients are derived from four broad sources: • Plant and vegetablebased ingredients • Animal-based ingredients • Mineral-based ingredients • Bio-technologically based ingredients

12 Howes Street, Airport West VIC 3042 Ph: + 61 3 9380 5467 Fax: +61 3 9380 6143 E:iccv@bigpond.com www.iccv.com.au

The plant and vegetablebased ingredients Ingredients from plants and vegetables are Halal unless they have been contaminated with Haram ingredients, or contain intoxicating substances, or if any of those ingredients harm life and/or the health of a person. So, if a product contains

only plant and vegetable ingredients and they are not contaminated, nor contain any intoxicating substances, or harmful for the consumer, such products are considered to be Halal suitable and is safe to consume if one is not able to find the same product Halal Certified. Processing aids and production methods have to be carefully monitored in order to maintain the Halal status of food with plant and vegetable origin. It’s important to also note that many fruit and vegetables are coated with different waxes to make them shine, retain moisture, or to protect the fruit and vegetable from spoilage. Sometimes these waxes contain animal components. The animal-based ingredients Meat and poultry products are not only consumed as staple food items, but are also converted into further processed ingredients to be used in formulating a myriad of non-meat food products. All animal-based

Dr Bekim Hasani Head of Shariah Affairs,

ICCV

ingredients have to be checked for their origin and in order to be Halal, the animals that these ingredients derive from have to be Halal and slaughtered in a halal manner. The mineral-based ingredients Generally, mineral based ingredients, like salt and petroleum-based foods and medicines, such as chewing gum and aspirin, are permissible except that which might harmfully affect ones’ nervous system, or harm life and/or the health of a person. Bio-technologically produced ingredients Biotech ingredients are made by microbes, often in the form of bacteria, yeast, or algae that have undergone DNA editing, so that their metabolic process will result in a commercially viable molecule. Presently, the most contentious issue is the status of Genetically

Modified Organisms (GMO), or vegetables and plants, the use of food additives, enzymes, emulsifiers and/ or hormones. They are the main subject of concern for Muslims today. Genetic modifications are not mentioned directly in the Holy Quran, or the Hadith, as these are new developments. Genetic modifications are permissible by some scholars based on Qiyas (analogy) and Ijma (consensus of scholars) with some limitations. In cases where the improvement of nutritional value of plants needed for the welfare of humans, is necessary for Muslims to observe some Islamic virtues and laws in order to consume these products. Note: In the next article, we will discuss the ingredients that fall under questionable, or doubtful categories, such as: gelatin, lipase, pepsin, alcohol, vanilla extract (pure or artificial), animal fats, animal blood, and animal rennet, etc...

DOES THE PRESENT EVIL HAVE A SILVER LINING? Bilal Cleland dunk1689@gmail.com

At present here in Australia, we are confronted with a federal government which locks up asylum seekers indefinitely, on offshore islands with inadequate medical protection. A government which is reluctant to provide those unemployed, through no fault of their own, with adequate financial assistance. A government which permits billionaires to accept JobKeeper despite huge profits, but which hounds welfare recipients on the basis of an algorithm, pushing perhaps 2000 to suicide. The judiciary accused the government of a “shameful chapter” in public policy. A government unable to handle the pandemic by providing fit for purpose quarantine facilities for overseas arrivals or adequately managing the purchase, production and distribution of the vaccines which will save the people and the economy. A government which threatens the continued functioning of the NDIS with computer-generated “robo” budgets. A “sustainability action taskforce” has a goal over the next six months

to dramatically reduce the scheme’s budget. A “robo” calculation will decide the level of care disabled people should receive. [17 April 2021 Saturday Paper] A government which has mishandled its privatised residential aged care to the extent that it has not vaccinated the residents or their staff despite the fact that most covid-19 deaths in Australia were in those very federally controlled facilities. In Victoria there was not one covid-19 death in the state run aged care residences. A government which has so politicised the public service that it disguises reality. Australia’s post covid-19 recovery is behind that of other nations on critical indicators but that is not what is coming from Treasury. According to Alan Austin: “ No developed country has tumbled further.” [31 May 2021 Independent Australia]

A Silver Lining? One of the positive effects of this exposure of the federal government alongside the tempered voice of the corporate media, has been greater public attention to the nature of that media. The nobbling or outright destruction of major ABC programs like Lateline, the downgrading of QandA to unwatchable status, the profound change to Insiders, the making of the 7.30 Report into a friendly place for those it should be holding accountable, under a Chairman and ABC Board apparently appointed with ideology in mind, have served to reduce investigative reporting from the formerly independent media to almost nil. Only Media Watch, Foreign Correspondent and Four Corners have survived thus

far. The sale of the Age, the SMH and the AFR has reduced their independent stance although some journalists are still struggling to maintain quality. Stokes Media, with its advocacy of the Right, support for the Disneylandisation of the Australian War Memorial and other conservative causes, has been on a similar path. The dying newspapers like the Herald-Sun, the Courier and the Daily Telegraph as well as Sky News Australia, have shown themselves to be tenacious but seem to be failing to keep the LNP in power. The WA and Queensland elections have shown they no longer wield the power they had in 1975 when they supported Fraser after the coup against Whitlam.

The Rise of Independent Media The exposure of the conservative mainstream and partly nobbled ABC media, has fostered the proliferation of independent media. As well as community monthlies like the Australasian Muslim News or the bilingual Al Wasat, there is a growing fleet of trustworthy publications, most online.

Independent Australia This website deals with issues avoided or distorted by the corporate media and gives the community a voice. Some of its most recent articles include: The Liberal Party redefines scrutiny: No questions asked. Palestinian hopes paralysed under new Israeli government. AFP/FBI sting recalls history of criminal activity on our

When we are confronted with evil we need to also consider the lessons it offers and the positive changes it ushers in.

wharves. Science has made the idea of ‘race’ non-existent.

John Menadue. Pearls and Irritations Top Stories not being covered by the corporates but essential reading include: We’ve got you on file: Australia’s McCarthyist moment.| Australian democracy is fading fast. Government rorting is now the Australian way of doing business. Stalinist-style prosecutions of Witness K and Bernard Collaery.

Michael West Media “What’s the Scam” is an interesting series on this website. It also typically deals with areas the corporate media tries to skate over. For example one area rarely dealt with recently featured: “Governments back privileged in education, public schools bear burden.” There are also more expensive media offerings which, despite the cost, deliver worthwhile journalism.

The Saturday Paper This is most attractive for its outstanding journalists, Richard Ackland, Paul Bongiorno, Mike Seccombe, Rick Morton, Margaret Simons to name but a few. Each article deals with hidden issues so far as the mainstream corporate media is concerned.

It also employs outstanding journalists, such as Bernard Keane, Amber Schultz, Guy Rundle, David Hardaker, Georgia Wilkins, Kishor Napier-Raman are some of them.

The Future The corporate media tends to exclude dissident voices, including the voice of the Labor Opposition and the Greens, but democracy relies upon faith in the intellectual capabilities of the people to see through lies and obfuscation. The rise of independent media and the spread of social media such as Facebook and Twitter mean that lies are harder to hide and the corrupt become nervous. Although antiDemocratic ideas can be spread on social media, the overwhelming popular voice favours evidence and truth. Loony conspiracies like QAnon, with its Islamophobia and covid-19 denial, might have support from high political levels but most people are not stupid and it is hard to brainwash the literate. Democracy is indeed under attack and it is certain that this federal government will be unable to deal with the rise of rightwing extremism, given that its response has been put in the hands of Senator Paterson of IPA fame, replacing Andrew Hastie formerly SAS and part of the rightwing rump of the LNP. However the federal government is not Australia. Extremism and cruelty have very tiny support in this population. The recent state election in WA showed that.

Crikey Its “A Dossier of Lies and Falsehoods,” is outstanding in holding this government to account

Helping Women Transform Their Bodies

AND LIVES FOR THE BETTER

For Muslim moms struggling with weight loss, finding support in Australia’s weight loss community can be a challenge. With modest clothing, cultural norms, and dietary restrictions, connecting with supports and wellness advice that speaks to their experience is a struggle. May Zaki, a body transformation expert, life coach, and nutritional professional based in Sydney is changing that.

“Diets have been long associated with losing weight. Although diets are not gender-specific, this topic is of particular interest to women as they are under constant pressure to look good and stay healthy, and we are all aware that this means maintaining the right weight and physique. There are hundreds - if not thousands - of diet plans available out there, yet most women still struggle to find one that has long-term results.” Said May Zaki For 20 years, May has been stuck in a so-called Yo-Yo diet cycle, like most women, trying to lose weight and not to gain it back, while staying somewhat healthy and fit. She stayed in this never-ending cycle, up until 2016 when she arrived in Australia, she was already 20 kilos overweight, she had tried almost everything to shift, but diets did not show any positive results at that time. This was the moment May decided to dive deep into the sophisticated industry of nutrition and reveal the real reasons why most people struggle with their long-term weight loss goals and obesity. Now, after years of studying and managing her business in Sydney Australia, she can proudly say that she is an expert in this field. May is a certified professional in weight management, sports and exercise nutrition/ children nutrition, a certified life coach, NLP Practitioner, and a Certified Naturopath. Although May has managed to bag a number of achievements in such a short period of time, her most recent - and also most important achievement is becoming an author with the launch of her book named “Mind over Tummy: How to finally win that battle with the scale”. Which quickly made its way onto best-seller lists in the U.S. and U.K. In her book, May has shared a detailed explanation of how to lose weight just by following the Sunnah’s approach of filling a third of your gut, and addressing the emotional reasons behind our habits as Muslims. “My deep respect for our traditional Muslim teachings, in addition to my research into leading modern science, have brought the realization that optimal vitality is impossible without a comprehensive ‘body,

with loved ones, and trying to achieve the unrealistic beauty and fitness standards dictated by our society but once I understood the undeniable connection between our Sunnah, and the holistic, sustainable wellness, I was able to effortlessly my ideal healthy body while enjoying my favourite food.”. “For many Muslim moms, the struggle to lose weight can be a lonely one,” explains May Zaki. “There are challenges that aren’t met by the traditional weight loss community. We try every diet under the sun and still, we haven’t been able to shift the weight. Instead, we’ve been left with low selfesteem, a lack of self-confidence and we’re left feeling like we lack willpower.

May Zaki

In her book, May has shared a detailed explanation of how to lose weight just by following the Sunnah’s approach of filling a third of your gut, and addressing the emotional reasons behind our habits as Muslims. mind and spirit approach, and this how my book was born” May said May considers it as a philosophical approach to weight loss and overall physical and mental health and wellness. Rather than lists of banned foods, recipes, and strenuous exercise. When speaking about the book, May said, “I have dedicated this book to each and every woman who is struggling to lose weight but is not willing to give up. I know how hard it can be to achieve that perfect body and how demotivating it is when you spend a substantial amount of effort and money on different diet plans that show no results. May added “As a modern Muslim woman, I have always struggled to find a balance between my love for food and sharing delicious meals

For emotional eaters, which most of us are, these feelings are not only personally painful, but they’re also counterproductive. In my book, I discuss the pillars of my proven 5R formula. Which is all about reexamining habits and then redefining our relationship with food, exercise, and overall wellness.” May biggest drive is to eliminate confusion on nutrition and make it easy to take action by inspiring them

through simple lifestyle changes and the “no-diet” approach she believes in. That’s why she will be sharing her knowledge and experience with even more people through her writings in Al Wasat.

May has managed to bag a number of achievements in such a short period of time, her most recent - and also most important - achievement is becoming an author with the launch of her book named “Mind over Tummy: How to finally win that battle with the scale”. THE MUSLIM STANDS IN THE ERA OF ATHEISM AND DOUBTS AGAINST RELIGION By Marwan Saad Azzubaidi

Currently, the majority of mankind is looking for immediate rewards to keep their efforts in performing a certain mission. However, in practicing true worship towards Allah (SWT), we are expecting paradise as a reward and safety from hellfire in the hereafter. Having ourselves and families living in this contemporary materialistic world put our beliefs and faith in our religion under threats of materialism and antireligious thoughts, especially if any of us is subjected to hardship. The true protection we can provide to our pure Islamic faith among ourselves, families, and children during the times of the rise of atheism and doubts against religious beliefs is to inculcate the creed and moral values that Allah presented to us plainly in the Holy Quran. No great super-power on earth will be able to penetrate the fortress that we build by bringing up ourselves first, then our families, provided that we make the Holy Quran as our source of guidance for the principles of life and the purpose of our existence. Here I share three basic principles to remind ourselves and our dependents.

The First principle: We, human beings were granted life by the creator to be subjected to tests and trials. ((Who has created death and life that He may test you which of you is best in deed. And He is the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving)). Al-Mulk, 2

Will Allah accept the excuse that we let go of our religion because of affliction with hardships? Allah himself would answer that in the third chapter of the Holy Quran: )(Muhammad is no more than a messenger: before whom many of the messengers have passed away. If he died or was slain, will ye then Turn back on your heels? If any did turn back on his heels, not the least harm will he do to Allah; but Allah (on the other hand) will swiftly reward those who (serve Him) with gratitude)). Al-Imran, 144 Did Allah promise the believers to keep hardships away from them? The answer from the holy Quran is, no. Quite the contrary is true in the holy Quran where Allah said: ((Be sure we shall test you with something of fear, hunger, and some losses in goods or lives or the fruits (of your toil), but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere, who say, when afflicted with calamity: “To Allah We belong, and to Him is our return”)). Al-Baqarah, 155

AL WASAT 120 ¿ Dhul Qa'dah 1442 ¿ June 2021 ‫ هـ ¿ حزيران‬1442 ‫ ¿ ذو القعدة‬120 ‫الوسط‬

The Second Principle: To succeed in the test of calamity and hardship, a true believer should practice a high level of patience and be mindful not to display any act of discontent towards the Lord. Therefore, came the warning of Allah for those who are not sincere in their belief. Those will easily fail the test of practicing patience upon facing hardships. Allah described them as losers in this world and the hereafter: ((And among mankind is he who worships Allah on the edge (i.e. in doubt): if good befalls him, he is content therewith; but if a trial befalls him, he turns back on his face (i.e. reverts to disbelief after embracing Islam). He loses both this world and the Hereafter. That is the evident loss)). Al-Hajj, 11.

The Third Principle: Wealth and worldly gains are not signs of God’s loving the owner of that wealth. For our beloved prophet

Muhammad (PBUH) made it clear when he said: [Allah (SWT) grants wealth to whom he loves and he does not love, but he will never guide to believe in him except those whom he loves] *. Thus, if you are granted the belief in Allah and the hereafter, stand firm to hold and nurture this belief, for it is a sign that you are still amongst the ones whom Allah loves. * Authentic hadith narrated by Al-Albani is Sahih Al-targhib wa Altarhib, no.1571.

Updated COVID-19 vaccine rollout advice Medical experts in Australia now recommend the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for adults aged under 60. Previous medical advice was the Pfizer vaccine was preferred for adults aged under 50. This updated advice is based on new evidence that shows more risk of a rare blood-clotting condition in the 50-59 year-old age group than first thought. This condition is called thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome, or TTS. The AstraZeneca vaccine will be given to people 60 years and over. For people aged 60 years or over, the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks of TTS. Getting vaccinated remains the most important way to prevent serious illness or death from COVID-19. Many millions of people around the world have had their vaccines safely. People who have had their first dose of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine without any serious adverse effects should still receive their second dose. This includes adults under 60

years of age. Having your second dose offers you the best protection from getting seriously sick from COVID-19. If you’ve had your first dose you should book in for your second dose. Government vaccination clinics that already give the Pfizer vaccine will immediately start accepting people aged 50-59 for Pfizer. People in Australia can be confident that our medical experts continue to review evidence and data from here and from overseas. It’s recommended that everyone eligible gets the COVID-19 vaccination. To book your vaccination visit health.gov.au For more information If you have questions about the COVID-19 vaccines, speak to your doctor, go to www.health.gov.au/ covid19-vaccines-languages, or call the National Coronavirus Helpline on 1800 020 080. GIFT OF KINDNESS

TEACH YOUR CHILD TO DO THE RIGHT THING By Jamilah Samian www.coolmumsuperdad.com

History tells us there is quite a lot that a regular person can do. Take the case of Muhammad Yunus. In 1974, Yunus was a young Economics lecturer at a university in Bangladesh. One day, he saw scores of ill-looking men, women and children on the streets. Over the next few days, he saw more and more of such people. A number of them had died.

Yunus realized what had happened: For some months, famine had struck the land. People were dying of hunger. When it rained, it came in torrents, only to destroy whatever crops that had survived. The poor villagers had come to the cities, only to find there was nothing to eat there either. Yunus wondered, “How could people suffer so much?” He tried to erase the images of the suffering people but could not. Yunus was so disturbed that he and a group of students went out to visit the nearest village. They met a lady weaving baskets. Yunus asked, “Who buys your baskets, Ma’am?” “The money lender,” the lady said. “I borrow the money to buy the things I need. Then I sell the baskets back to him at a price he chooses.” Yunus went to the next house where a lady was making handicrafts and the next and was told the same story. He discovered that, at the rate the poor people borrowed money from the money lenders and paid them back, these poor people would never earn enough to free themselves of debt. They were slaves for life. But the greatest shock for Yunus was when he realized that all it took for a poor woman to be free of debt was less than US$1. That day, Yunus and his students spoke to

42 poor women and their families. Yunus went to one bank after another to ask if any of them could help these families. None was interested. Finally, Yunus took out US$27 from his own pocket and divided it among the 42 women. He told them, “Pay me back when you can.” He did the same thing to other poor families in more villages and to his surprise, the borrowers paid him back each time. Today, Muhammad Yunus’s efforts have become the Grameen Bank, a bank that specializes in helping the poor. The same system is now applied to more than 50 countries over the world. Yunus’s personal act of conscience sent wake-up calls throughout the world. People who have never met Yunus are affected by his singular action. It is part of the ripple effect, a concept children need to hear. Perhaps, after your child heard this story, he will say, “But Yunus was someone. He was a university Professor.” Well, aren’t each of us someone? There were many other professors like Yunus (and wealthier men too) when he began the project. Yet, nobody took the initiative to do something like he did. Telling stories on the power of one, of how one regular person can change the world, can spur demotivated children to rethink the way they view themselves. You do not have to be

Muhammad Yunus

someone big to make a difference in this world. The world needs everyday heroes just as Muhammad Yunus has shown. All he did was to do the right thing.

Adapted from “Cool Boys Super Sons” by Jamilah Samian. Read other books by Jamilah: “Cool Mum Super Dad”, “Leadership In Parenting”, “Parenting Generation Y & Z”, “The Kindness Miracle”.

Help your child understand the ripple effect. Regular children can be heroes, too, by always choosing to do the right thing and by giving their personal best at each moment in their lives. Attentive children make teaching meaningful for teachers, and a happier day at school translates into happier families when the teachers get home. They treat their children better. Which means how you behave at school does make for a better or a worse world. What one does has far-reaching implications to the rest of the world. Does your child know the difference he can make just by giving his personal best? Relate the story of how a regular person makes a difference by doing the right thing. It doesn’t have to be a famous personality. It can be someone you know.

Sponsor an orphan, give hope for a bright future. Human Appeal is currently sponsoring over 63,000 orphans in 15 countries. For as little as $50 a month you can grant an orphaned child a better start in life; the chance to receive an education and live in a loving and caring environment.

The Crescent Institute Presents a Talk by NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian in Sydney

NSW On the 26th of May, the Crescent Institute proudly hosted a talk by New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian on the topic of “NSW Economy: Recovery and Resilience,” at our headquarters in Sydney. The event was hosted by Crescent Institute Chair Professor Peter Shergold AC and moderated by senior journalist and co-founder of

Media Diversity Australia Antoinette Lattouf. This event welcomed 150 live guests, with over 40 more tuning in via Zoom link. This was the Crescent Institute’s first live event since 2019. The event began with a welcome address by Daniel Gilbert of Gilbert and Tobin and an acknowledgment of the Gadigal people, the traditional owners of the land. The Premier began her talk on COVID-19 recovery with reflections

on leadership. She related how community leaders had offered invaluable assistance to the NSW Government in motivating their communities to adopt COVID Safe practices. She went on to recognise the sacrifices made by those communities in adapting their regular religious practices since the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic and particularly over lockdown, and she praised their resilience in the face the uncertainty and upheaval of the last 15 months.

Ms Berejiklian affirmed her belief in the value of a multicultural Australia, recognising the importance of active citizenship instilled in her since childhood by her Armenian mother and Syrian father. Towards the end of her presentation, she stressed the importance of promoting diversity of representation across all platforms to stem the spread of harmful narratives.

UNRAVELING THE SILK ROAD

KAZAKHSTAN & TAJIKISTAN We continue on our journey along the Silk Road, this time through the most unique of the five “stans”, Tajikistan and then through to the largest; Kazakhstan. Tajikistan is the poorest nation in Central Asia, with a population of 7 000 000. The average earning is about $15 day. Life is tough in Tajikistan. The Tajiks unlike the Turkic peoples of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgizstan and Kazakhstan, are a Persian speaking people, more aligned with Iranian ethnicity. This country, while quite under-developed, is rich in natural beauty. At the foot of the Pamir Mountains, it is rugged and untamed, whereas in the valley basin where the Amu Darya flows, most of the agriculture takes place, cotton and wheat being their main crops.

Kuranda Seyit Tajikistan is relatively, unknown and not as popular for tourism. However, the people are beautiful and friendly. 95% are Sunni Muslim and 5% Shia. According to the Ismaili sect, called Pamiris, who live in the mountains, the origin story of Tajikistan is quite enchanting. They say when God was handing out land to all the people, the Pamiri were very humble and went to the back of the line, when God came to the Pamiri there was no land left to allocate and God feeling bad for them, gave them a piece of His own personal land, which was like a paradise on Earth. Dushanbe (meaning Monday) is the capital city, with around 700 000 people. It has some historical significance with the Hisor Fort dating to around 6th century CE and the Sangin Mosque, built out of wood and ornately carved and decorated, dating back to the 7th century CE. The city lies on the Silk Road, and houses many madrasas and mosques and a caravanserai that was built in 1808 which safely housed silk road traders and their camels on their way to Samarkand and Bukhara. Geographically Dushanbe is closer to Samarkand and its people are ethnically similar but due to Soviet era borders being drawn communities became divided. Although, this land lies on the silk road, it has had less geo-political influence in the region and is not

Hisor Fort, Tajikistan resource rich like Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan, is by far the largest in land area, roughly the size of West Australia, situated to the north, with its expansive grazing land and known for its sheep and wheat

AL WASAT 120 ¿ Dhul Qa'dah 1442 ¿ June 2021 ‫ هـ ¿ حزيران‬1442 ‫ ¿ ذو القعدة‬120 ‫الوسط‬

production as well as being rich in oil and gas. Kazakhstan’s population is 18.8 million and its capital is Alma Ata (with half of its population being of Russian origin). Similar to Kyrgizstan, the people of Kazakhstan share a nomadic history and breed

horses, live in Yurts and drink horsemilk. They love wrestling and playing a very rigorous sport called Buzkashi, where men on horse-back chase each other trying to grab a headless goat around a field. Its no mean feat, whether its halal is another question!

Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi Kazakhstan

The region was Turkified in the early part of the first Millennium CE but the first Gokturk Khaganate was established only in the 6th Century CE. In 766 the Yabgu state was founded by the Oghuz Turks and Islam was introduced by the Arabs in that same century. Islam spread quickly amongst the mostly Shamanist (aminism) or Buddhist Turkic tribes. Western Kazakhstan came under the influence of Oghuz Turks, the east was controlled by the Karluk Turks who established the Karahanid Empire in the 9th Century. In the 11th century the region was invaded by Kipchak and Kimak Turks and then the region fell under the control of Genghiz Khan and the Golden Horde, in the 13thcentury. Finally, the first Kazakh khaganate was established by Janybek Khan and Kerey Khan in the mid 15thcentury. The region was invaded by the Russians in the 18th century and held until 1991 when Kazakhstan gained independence. Kazakhstan is probably most famous for the Baikonur Cosmodrome, which is the launchpad site for Soviet space exploration in the 60’s and 70’s and continues today. However, more importantly, it is significant for one of the great Islamic figures in history, Ahmed Yasawi, (born 11th century, Sayram and died 1166, Yasi, Turkistan), a poet and Sufi mystic, an early Turkish mystic leader who exerted a powerful influence on the development of mystical orders throughout the Turkish-speaking world. He is said to have gone to Bukhara to study with the great Sufi leader Yusuf Hamadhani and other famous mystics. Finally, he returned to Yasi. The extant work attributed to the poet is the Divan-i hikmet (“Book of Wisdom”), containing poems on

mystical themes. The conqueror Timur erected a magnificent mausoleum over his grave (in Turkistan) in 1398, to which pilgrims came, revering Ahmed Yasawi as a saint. Over the past several months we have explored the history, culture and societies of the Central Asian nations along the Silk Road. Learning about some of its great Islamic scholars, thinkers, scientists,

poets and leaders and gained some insights into its rich culture, art and architecture. It had for more than four centuries been clouded in mystery and isolation under foreign occupation and only in the last two decades have travellers been able to experience the region. I hope you have enjoyed this Silk Road series. I certainly enjoyed sharing my experiences and travels through this remarkable and

amazing region with you, rich in Islamic history and significant in its contribution to the development of Islamic science, culture and art. I feel like it was just yesterday and yearn to re-visit once the travel restrictions are eased. A trip through Central Asia is a must, if you want to know more about Islamic history and identity, so let’s make a deal and meet at the Registan (Samarkand) on 1 September 2022!
