PRIME MINISTER

MESSAGE FROM THE PRIME MINISTER

EID AL-ADHA 2021 Eid Mubarak, to all who are celebrating Eid al-Adha. I send my best wishes, gratitude and thanks to Australia’s Muslim community for the sacrifices you have made over this past year. Though we have achieved so much saving lives and livelihoods, many Australians – especially in Sydney and Melbourne – cannot gather and celebrate as they would like. I know we have asked much of Muslim Australians over this past year with many of your gatherings, celebrations and rituals curtailed, yet you have demonstrated your faith through the sacrifices you have made and the courage and kindness you have shown. No matter what our creed, we know that faith always finds a way to shine brightly in the darkness – and I know your commitment to each other and to your community shines brightly in cities, suburbs, towns and farms across our land. I thank you for what you have done, and what you continue to do to protect each other and your fellow Australians. It has not been easy – particularly for families who are separated from each other. Though in many places this Eid al-Adha we are being tried, we have demonstrated as a country what we can achieve when we all play our part and work together. No matter where we are in Australia we can all play our part – by answering the call of sacrifice, by staying COVID safe and by getting vaccinated. I have every confidence that our sacrifices, compassion and support for each other will be rewarded with better times.

Guidelines for Leading through Crisis:

SCENARIO OF CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK A crisis can bring fear to individuals and organisations. However, if we let this fear overcome our thinking and actions, we may react in an emotional way and make the wrong decisions. In times of crisis, good leadership is the link that can hold family together and make organisations move forward through the strength and resilience of its team and can eventually rise above difficulties and challenges

Dr. Rawaa El Ayoubi Sydney

• At this time, we need a strong, visionary and genuine leader who can use the right model in a form and fashion that are unique to the particular circumstances and can turn them to his/her advantage in the situation at hand. • Nowadays, our situation has become very tough, and the world is completely different to how we have known it before. Everyone is suffering, whether they already have a business or not. Crisis is a big revealer as it can test the skill of the leader, can he/ she continue to maintain momentum in their life and work? • Right now, whether we are an individual, a family, organisation or government, it all comes down to how resilient we are and how strong our will is to follow the instructions and cooperate for the best of our society. It is an open challenge to find out the level of strength and patience we all have as humans.

AL WASAT 121 ¿ Dhul Hijjah 1442 ¿ July 2021 ‫ هـ ¿ تموز‬1442 ‫ ¿ ذو الحجة‬121 ‫الوسط‬

Leadership in crisis management is really tough because the success or failure of all organisations, community circles, schools, hospitals and governments rests on the perceived quality of the people at the top. Here are seven guidelines that will help you as a leader, and your organisation to rise above the crisis and thrive on time of change and uncertainty. They are: 1- Empathise by listening to your employees and seeking to understand their points of view and acknowledging that your organisation is facing a crisis. It is a difficult step, but it is your first step towards mounting a response. What leader needs during crisis is to be transparent and to have a strong mindset that allows him/her to stay focused on positive outcomes instead of negative thoughts and can help navigating pandemic crisis and future crisis. 2- Emphasise the value

of collaboration and teamwork by organising a network of teams that can take place outside business operations. The objective of this team network is to promote rapid problem solving and performance under high-stress conditions. It will cover three domains: employees protection, planning the response to crisis and engaging experts from different fields. 3- Reminding your people of your organisation’s vision that will remain strong and clear even in times of crisis. Your vision is like the root of a big tree that will move with the wind while the root remains strong. 4- Risk assessment. Encourage your team to take risks after planning a risk assessment that can contain a good percentage of risk averse and a risk appetite. Also, do not underestimate both the possibility of a similar crisis and the impact that it could have on your organisation. 5- Create a good system of communication and provide your employees

with frequent updates. Also, expect the best from your people and assuring them with encouraging words that the only mistake is to do nothing and be pessimistic. 6- Maintain the longterm view. Keep your eyes on your vision but you can change your goals according to the new crisis scenario. 7- Create strategic plan with your alliances in recognising the value of creating bonds with other organisations whose vision is similar to yours. Try to embrace the above guidelines and practices that can support your organisations during this crisis and to learn how to prevent similar crisis in the future and to prepare you well for the next challenge to come. Eid Mubarak.

Message from the Grand Mufti of Australia

to the Australian Muslim Community during these challenging times To the Muslim community and wider Australian community.

Dr Ibrahim Abu Mohammed Mufti of Australia

• We realise that we are living in a very challenging time in the history of mankind, not only in Australia but also globally. • We are facing a great war against an enemy that is constantly changing its tactics. Sadly, the physical, economical and psychological repercussions of this war will be felt long after it is over.. • And we are facing changes that have permeated all aspects of our lives; our homes, the streets, mosques, churches and other places of worship. • The enemy (Covid-19) despite being nearly invisible, its dangers are so severe, impacting the most valuable gift given to us by our creator, life. • Great nations face their challenges by uniting and working together. We do this by understanding the dangers of this virus and the methods to combat it and abiding by the regulations placed by the appropriate government bodies whose job is to protect the

public in these unprecedented times. • People’s lives are at risk. Now more than ever we need to be wise in our actions and practice patience as we sacrifice a portion of our freedom of movement for the greater good. • We remind the Muslim community in Australia that we have brothers and sisters worldwide who are scholars, scientists, doctors, nurses and other health professionals who are at the forefront of fighting off this pandemic in hospitals and laboratories, doing everything they can to help protect people from this disease. • As Australian Muslims we continue to strive towards contributing to our great nation Australia. We will aid, support and abide by recommendations from the health bodies that are working towards educating and protecting the people. • I urge the community to use these holy days to ask Allah swt to remove this disease from Australia and around the world. • I ask Allah swt to protect you and to maintain the bounties of our freedom, health and security.

GREETING

We’d like to send our best wishes to all Muslim Victorians celebrating Eid Al Adha. We know how important this time of the year is for all of you. It’s a time to go to mosque for prayer and celebrate with friends and family. But right now, we need everyone to stay at home and follow the rules that keep us safe. That means changing the way we celebrate Eid – watching services online and catching up with friends and family over Zoom. We know it’s not the first time we’ve asked you to do this – but it’s more important than ever. We’ve done this before and we can do it again. Dan Andrews Premier of Victoria

Dear brothers and sisters,

The current lockdown situation has raised many questions, in both opposition and agreement of the new rules that rolled out. Many benefits and disadvantages have been raised regarding the impact of this lockdown on the community’s health, wellbeing, economy, and many other factors. Each side offering legitimate issues and challenges. However, as Muslims debate the lockdown laws, we should take this opportunity to spend time with our children and to expand our knowledge of the deen. COVID-19 is a fact that is threatening our vulnerable community members. We are aware of the death-toll and those impacted by the effects of the virus. Engaging in enjoying and time-consuming activities this lockdown has been difficult. For me personally, the end of the European and South-American Championship has caused a lull in the activities available for me to pass the time and occupy myself. Lockdown is challenging and suffocating at times but it is a matter of necessity, it must be done. Staying at home is critical for the safety and protection of myself, my family and the community. With the constant extensions of lockdown and the increase in restrictions, there is a steady pace of anxiety throbbing through the community, loud calls of frustration and the loss of resolve from between us. We are tired, and are eager to return to our lives, our jobs and schools. Things will return to normal. Stay at home. Enjoy your time. Spend your Eid with your immediate family members, enjoy a small, private and intimate Eid. Look at the positives!

ADD A LITTLE SWEETNESS TO YOUR LIFE! Mona Albadawy Pharmacist and Nutritionist Founder of @monyhealthcoah Member of the Global Weight Management Federation

We all need a little sweetness in our lives. The trick here is how to indulge in special occasions without ruining our health or wellness plans. As a mum and a nutritionist, I think about how to prepare guilt-free desserts and treats to enjoy and share with my family and friends. Therefore, I will share with you my favourite nourishing and delicious recipes for energy balls. This dessert works well for Eid and many other special occasions, when we often eat more sweets than usual. Energy balls are raw, healthy, and convenient snacks made of natural ingredients that do not need to be baked. As we all know, the long cooking or baking times for food at high temperatures may destroy or reduce some vitamins and minerals. These balls contain a variety of raw nuts, seeds, dried fruits, superfoods, nut butters and flours and healthy carbs. All of these are unrefined, natural, and provide generous amounts of vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, proteins, slow-release complex carbohydrates and fibres. Energy balls are an excellent way to indulge without feeling guilty while satisfying our sweet tooth and gaining energy.

Chocolate Fudge Energy Balls Store bought chocolate fudge cookies are popular sweets, but they are not always the healthiest option, as they can be packed with saturated fats and refined sugars. While this recipe is full of vitamin C-rich dried fruits “cranberries”, antioxidants nut butter “almond butter”, high omega-3 fatty acid rich seed “flaxseed” and slow releasing complex healthy carbohydrate “rolled oat”. Serve chocolate balls as part of a dessert with fresh fruit or serve them with coffee at the end of a meal.

Ingredients: (make 24 balls) • 2/3 cup of rolled oats • 1 cup dried cranberries • 6 Tbsp desiccated coconut + extra for rolling. • 2 Tbsp ground flaxseed • 4 Tbsp cocoa powder • 2 Tbsp peanut butter or can be substituted with Tahini if you are allergic to nuts. • 1 Tbsp coconut oil • 2 Tbsp maple syrup or honey

• 2 Tbsp water or more to make the mix more wet

Instructions: • Place all the ingredients in food processor and combine until smooth like fudge. • Using a small cookie scoop, scoop the mixture into your palm and roll to form a ball, each ball should be around 1 inch round. • Roll in desiccated coconut. • Repeat with remaining mixture. • Store in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer.

Recipe Note: • Make sure you choose a good quality cocoa and peanut butter that is lower in salt and sugar. • Store the balls in an airtight container in your fridge for up to 2 weeks or freeze them for up to 2 months. When putting balls in the freezer, ensure it placed in a properly sealed container and labelled with its’ date.

Apple Pie Energy Balls Apple and cinnamon are a dream duo, so it is no wonder that the apple pie remains our favourite treat. In this recipe, the cinnamon is not added just for its aroma, but it will boost your immunity and stabilize your blood sugar levels. The dates also make these balls sweet without adding sugar, and the healthful fats from the almond butter and chia seeds make them really filling.

Ingredients: (make 20 balls) • 1 cup rolled oat + extra for rolling • 1 cup pitted and chopped Medjool dates • 1 cup coarsely grated small Pink Lady or Gala apple • ½ cup homemade apple purée or more to make the mix more wet • 1/2 cup almond meal

• 2 Tbsp raw almond butter or peanut butter • 1 Tbsp chia seed • 1 Tbsp ground Saigon cinnamon + extra for dusting • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg • ¼ tsp ground clove • 1 tsp vanilla essence

Instructions: • Place all the ingredients in food processor and combine until the mixture starts to come together. • Using a small cookie scoop, scoop the mixture into your palm and roll to form a ball, each ball should be around 1 inch round. • Roll in oat or in ground cinnamon. • Repeat with remaining mixture. • Store in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer.

Eating healthily is one of the most important things you can do for yourself, and your family and I also believe that a little deliciousness occasionally is important … Stay Safe Everyone! AL WASAT 121 ¿ Dhul Hijjah 1442 ¿ July 2021 ‫ هـ ¿ تموز‬1442 ‫ ¿ ذو الحجة‬121 ‫الوسط‬

FAMILY

GIFT OF KINDNESS

EVERY FATHER

LEAVES A LEGACY By Jamilah Samian

www.coolmumsuperdad.com What kind of memories did you have with your father? Were they sweet or sour or a mix of both? In a study done by Michigan State University (MSU) in 2016 involving more than 730 families, fathers’ relationships were found to have long-term implications on their children’s wellbeing. If a father was often depressed and stressed, his children would be adversely affected. The results were expected; it provided further proof of how important dads are in the family. Still, no father is the same with another. Every father is unique. My father, for instance, worked 7 days a week. As a busdriver, he was away dawn to dusk, earning daily wages. But my mother’s frequent references: “What would abah say to that?”, “Be

sure to leave some food for abah”, ensured his presence were felt for my siblings and me. I often hear moms’ voices out there about Dads not measuring up. How well a man plays his role as a father is largely tied to how much exposure he had growing up. Did he have a father when he was young? Did he have a role model? Growing up, not all men had a father who was emotionally close, who tried to help with household chores, who did his best to balance work and life. A mother told me: “My husband is unable to make even the simplest decisions. All his life he never had a dad.” This woman had her kids declare, “Mom, you’re the boss.” As painful as this sounds, and coming back to the MSU study, the question becomes: What can a mother

do to encourage her husband to become a more involved father? Do what you can to break the cycle. Together, we are all raising the next generation of fathers. Little things go a long way. Create opportunities for your husband to interact with the kids. Remarks in front of the kids like, “What do you think, Dad?” might nudge him a little towards the desired outcome. Even praising Dad in front of the kids, “Your Dad was so kind this morning, he (did such-and-such)” can encourage him to be more present with the kids. And remember, Dads are not Assistant Mums. If he tried to help around the house but what he did failed to meet your expectations, drop the criticism. If you’re a single mom, or your spouse isn’t a good role model, help your son connect with a male figure he can look up to. It

could be a grandfather, an uncle, a coach or teacher. I want to conclude with the story about how a Dad transformed his son in 4 days. This was a true story shared by a couple who attended a workshop I did some time ago. This couple had a teenager who was doing well in school, but upon starting upper secondary, he began to do poorly in Mathematics. All he would do after school was to lock himself up in his room and play computer games all evening. Every day, he would receive an earful from his parents. One day, the couple decided to do something different; what they were doing was not working. They sat the boy down and asked him nicely. What was going on? That was the turning point for this family. “I couldn’t understand what the teacher taught in class,”

said the boy. “At home what I get is a scolding every day. Playing computer games makes me feel powerful.” It was a wake-up call for his parents. They apologised to their son. The father took 4 days off to teach his son Mathematics at the end of which the son said, “Dad, this was the best 4 days of my life.” The son went on to become a Dean’s list student in university. Believe it or not, Dads do matter. A lot.

THE NUMBER ONE SECRET

THE DIET CULTURE DOESN’T WANT YOU TO KNOW

May Zaki - Sydney Have you ever met someone who went on a strict diet and was able to maintain their results for the long term? Neither have I. I have spent a fortune on diet products - from shakes to pre-prepared meals - not to mention the number of “miracle pills” that were supposed to suppress my appetite and boost my metabolism, yet there I was - stuck in the endless, desperate cycle of yo-yo dieting. Like millions of other teenagers, I started dieting when I was fourteen years old, torturing myself with starvation and harmful pills all for the sake of achieving the ideal body. Eventually, I started wondering who had made the decision about what the ideal body actually was. Of course, the answer is “society”, so people destroy their happiness, their health, and sometimes even lose their lives trying to win the praise and approval of strangers. According to several shocking, long-term studies, girls who start dieting as teenagers are three times more likely to be overweight five years later, even if they started at a normal weight! In addition, all of these studies found that the same factors that predicted weight gain also predicated the development of eating disorders. The undeniable fact is that dieting just doesn’t solve our weight issues. In fact, it leaves us in a more miserable state, destroying our selfconfidence. And over time, it causes us to lose faith in ourselves, along with any hope that we can achieve our weight goals and have a healthy body.

Studies show that 95% of people who go on a weight loss diet gain all the weight back again - sometimes more - within a year or two. What other industry can get away with a 95% failure rate? Don’t you think it’s time to stop dieting? The shocking truth that the diet industry doesn’t want you to know is that they rake in profits of 72 billion dollars a year, but more people than ever are overweight. As a body transformation mentor for Muslim mums, I have the privilege to coach women from different backgrounds all over the world from community leaders to corporate leaders to housewives. I can never stress strongly or often enough that we all face the same struggles when it comes to body image. Diets don’t only fail to help us achieve what we want, they actually increase hatred of our bodies, cause severe emotional eating episodes, and make us believe that we are addicted to food. The diet culture also affects women on deeper levels, making them feel that they will never be enough, that they will never meet the standards forced upon them by the diet industry (which are actually designed to keep them stuck where they are so that they remain perpetual customers),

AL WASAT 121 ¿ Dhul Hijjah 1442 ¿ July 2021 ‫ هـ ¿ تموز‬1442 ‫ ¿ ذو الحجة‬121 ‫الوسط‬

and that they will be forever trapped by their own weight, hating every single inch of their bodies. This kind of thinking puts us in a state of perpetual war with our bodies, and associates our self-worth with the number on the scale. The lower the number, the greater our feeling of worth becomes. It’s all about losing weight, not paying attention to our actual physical and mental health. While we lose our identities by constantly seeking diet trends, miracle products, and absurdly expensive surgeries, the diet industry makes billions. The question is, do these trends really heal the root cause of our poor body image, or just make things worse? The real problem lies in our emotional connection with food. As we all know, we are wired to love food. Food is at the centre of our most precious family memories. So how can we expect to continue a restrictive diet that bans the foods we love? So what is the solution then? According to neuroscience, 80% of our success simply depends on our mindset. As I always say, most people are not willing to do the mental workout! The only way out of this silly yo-yo

diet cycle is to start investing in our mindsets and working on the psychology behind eating - behind the ideal, healthy body - not the ideal body the con artists and manipulative advertisers in the diet industry try to implant deeply in our minds to make us slaves to their products forever. From my experience in the field of body transformation, we sometimes need to dig deeper than just our mindset, we need to question our beliefs about our bodies and the myths we believe about diets and what health truly is. In the next couple of articles, I will share simple, powerful techniques so you can experience a quantum shift in your mindset and finally achieve long-term results. You will discover mind-blowing strategies you can use to enjoy your favourite foods while effortlessly getting in shape. If you’re fed up with diets that don’t work and you’re ready for true, healthy change, freedom and your ideal body are just around the corner. How COVID-19 has changed the way we grieve None of us are immune from the pain that comes with losing a loved one, but the arrival of COVID-19, the global pandemic that continues to play havoc with our lives, has also had a profound impact on the way we experience loss and grief. Dr Glen Hosking, a Clinical Psychologist at Victoria University, says local and international border restrictions means people have been unable to be present with loved ones facing the end of life or to attend the funerals, which can provide solace and ease the pain of loss. “I have experienced both patients in my work as a psychologist, and people in my personal life who have been impacted in these ways. Together with making the experience of losing a loved one even harder, not being able to be with family and friends or to attend funerals raises significant issues on how people can deal with and adapt to their loss, which also has implications for their ongoing mental health,” said Dr Hosking. The rituals associated with death and dying are profoundly important and provide an opportunity for family and friends to gather to support each other and commemorate and celebrate the

Since early 2020, countless people have been unable to participate in these rituals. “When someone experiences the death of a loved one overseas and is unable to be with them or attend the funeral, there is a possibility that this impacts their ability to grieve or process their loss. When this occurs, symptoms may include frequent and ongoing intrusive thoughts of the person who died, preoccupation with sorrow, excessive bitterness, disconnection from previous social relationships, difficulty accepting the death, and thoughts of hopelessness and helplessness. These symptoms may persist and have a significant impact on the individual and their day to day functioning.” Dr Hosking says there are several ways to help people who are struggling with the fact that they were not able to be with their loved one in their final hours, or was unable to attend end of life rituals. “Make time to remember the person you have lost, connect with others who knew the person, express your frustration about not being able to attend, and although we are all tired of online meetings, attending a virtual funeral, while far from ideal, is better than nothing at all.”

Eid al-Adha 2021 ‫عيد األضحى‬

A message to our community...  Disease Victorians are facing a rather difficult time going through the State’s fifth lockdown. This means that Victoria’s Muslim community cannot celebrate the Eid festival with their extended family and friends. The Coronavirus has undoubtedly affected many people around the world. However, in addition to the challenges posed by COVID-19, there are many people across our global community also contending with hardships, such as deadly floods in Europe, blasting dust storms in the Middle East and raging wildfires across America. “So, why is this happing to us?”. This is a very common question that arises during times of hardship. However, in the context of COVID-19, the same question has been

asked numerous times with many unqualified individuals - even among the Muslim community - professing to know all the answers. Allah (swt) is The AllKnowing. In the Holy Qur’an, God advises believers to speak to those who are knowledgeable, so when seeking information about faith, or any other important matter, Muslims should always consult with trained experts and qualified professionals in the field. Rather than consume ourselves with trying to understand why something has occurred in our lives, a Muslim should have Tawakkul (reliance on God and trusting in His plan). This is one of the most important facets of our faith, so much so that one cannot fully believe in God without placing trust in Him.

Only Allah (swt) truly knows why things occur in our lives, however, if we all work together and help one another during difficult times, we will come out of any adverse situation stronger.

What should we do then? • During this difficult time, let’s do our best to look after one another by reaching out to people who need help i.e. your neighbours, relatives, community members, work colleagues, etc. Sometimes, a single phone call can make a big difference to someone who is facing challenges, especially those in the community that are dealing with mental health issues, or domestic violence. • Be careful and mindful of who you follow on social

Imam Dr Bekim Hasani media. Instead of listening to individuals that create negative feelings and frustration within yourself, find someone who motivates you to be a better person, a better citizen, and above all a better Muslim during times of difficulty. We may have different views on matters, such as the current

pandemic, however do not allow differences of opinion break family ties and long held friendships. • We do not know how much time we all have in this life; therefore it is crucial to manage our time effectively. Organising your time paves a path to your very own personal development - physically by way of exercise and mentally by engaging in activities that help you learn new skills. • As Muslims, we are obliged to follow the laws of the land and in this case, we should follow the health and safety guidelines advised by the Victorian Government and health authorities, especially during the days of Eid.

I wish everyone a blessed a happy Ei’d Al Adha!

Every person to be counted in 2021 Census

EVERY STAT TELLS A STORY

With less than 6 weeks to go until the 2021 Census, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) will start its advertising campaign on 4 July. Tailored communication in 29 languages ensures Australia’s multicultural communities are informed and prepared to participate. It will be Australia’s 18th Census, to be held on Tuesday 10 August. It will include over 10 million households and 25 million people. There will be advertising and resources available to support the 21% of Australians who speak a language other than English at home. The Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National) is also available on 131 450 to assist those requiring additional inlanguage support. Census General Manager, Chris Libreri, said it was important for our multicultural communities to

have information about the Census in their own language, in particular new migrants who will be doing their first Australian Census this year. “The last Census in 2016 showed that our diversity is increasing – with nearly half of Australians either born overseas or with one or both parents born overseas,” Mr Libreri said. “Many people don’t realise that information collected in the Census, such as country of birth and languages spoken at home, helps inform important services and support for migrant and refugee communities across Australia. “Our message for Census this year is “Every stat tells a story”. We’ll have illustrations and real-life examples of how Census data has benefited the multicultural community. This includes community services for new migrants, and activities to keep older people healthy and

connected. “Everyone who is in Australia on Census night needs to complete it – it doesn’t matter if you’re a citizen, a resident, or just visiting. The only exception to this is foreign diplomats and their families.” Mr Libreri said Census staff are already engaging across the country, working with local community groups and stakeholders to get Censusready. “We’ve particularly focused on hiring field staff who speak additional languages, and reflect the diversity of the communities they’ll be working in.” Mr Libreri said this year, people can start their Census as soon as they receive instructions if they know where they’ll be on Tuesday 10 August. For information in your language, visit www.census. abs.gov.au/language

What is the Census? The Census, held on Tuesday 10 August 2021, is a snapshot of who we are and tells the story of how we are changing. It is one of the largest and most important statistical collections undertaken by the ABS.

How will people complete their Census? People will be able to complete the Census online, on their mobile device, or on paper. There will be a number of options available for people who need assistance to complete their Census form, including help from Census field staff, and phone and online help.

What’s new with the Census? People will be encouraged to complete their Census as soon as they receive their instructions, if they know where they’ll be on Tuesday 10 August. They don’t have to wait until Census night. The ABS will also introduce new questions in the 2021 Census—the first changes to questions collected since 2006. The new questions are on long-term health conditions, such as arthritis and diabetes, and on service in the Australian Defence Force.

Most Australian Muslims (63%) believe Australia is a welcoming society, despite an even greater majority (80%) experiencing prejudice or discrimination. The figures were included in a report published today by the Australian Human Rights Commission, Sharing the Stories of Australian Muslims. It found three in four (74%) Australian Muslims said they felt ‘Australian’, but one in four (23%) said they felt unable to speak up when they experienced discrimination. Race Discrimination Commissioner Chin Tan said: “Australia’s Muslim communities make significant economic, community and charitable contributions to Australian society, yet they still experience widespread discrimination. “Australia prides itself on being a diverse country, where equality and opportunity are afforded to all. If we are to live up to these values, urgent national attention is required to improve social cohesion. Supporting and including diverse communities enriches the whole country.” Commissioner Tan said the report underlines the need for a National AntiRacism Framework and clear goals and

commitments on tackling racism. “It’s not enough to simply condemn racism. We need a coordinated strategy that works on many fronts to actively counter racism at the various levels that it occurs,” Commissioner Tan said. The report details nine solutions that Australian Muslims have identified to help improve social harmony with the broader community and increase cultural acceptance. These include stronger support from Australian community and political leaders, improved media representation, public awareness education, and better implementation of existing initiatives. The report’s findings are based on a national, representative survey of more than 1000 Australian Muslims, and extensive consultations with community members and leaders across Australia. The report examines the Muslim community’s concerns and priorities in the wake of the tragic Christchurch mosque attack. It includes many examples of social harmony and cultural acceptance, but these are offset by experiences of hate, violence and negative public commentary.

Court shows sexual harassment will not be tolerated The Law Council of Australia acknowledges the statement of the Chief Justice and Chief Judge of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia in relation to two complaints against a Judge of that Court. Law Council President, Dr Jacoba Brasch QC said “it could not have been easy for these women to come forward, but once they did, the Chief Justice implemented a rigorous and thorough process to investigate the complaints whilst affording privacy and procedural fairness to those involved. “It is also most appropriate that the Chief Justice has released as much detail of that process as he could today.

“Every person should feel safe wherever they are, and wherever they work. That is why we have called for amendments to the Sex Discrimination Act (Cth) to make it plain that court staff and judicial officers, along with politicians and their staff, are covered by its terms. “I absolutely commend the Court for its detailed investigations and inquiry process, including the appointment of three independent former judges and a counsel-assisting, which may well be a first in the federal courts. “Once again, this highlights the need for a consistent approach across all Commonwealth courts, which a Federal Judicial Commission would provide.”

HALAL

HALAL ISSUE

DOUBTFUL INGREDIENTS

IN PROCESSED FOOD PART 1

Manufacturers of processed foods in the west, and particularly in Australia, are required by law to list all ingredients on food labels. However, it can sometimes be difficult to identify and determine the source of an ingredient when only the name of the chemical compound is provided. A number of these ingredients can come from halal sources, such as plant and vegetable-based ingredients, seafood-based ingredients, or even meat that has been slaughtered according to halal standards. Although, ingredients can also come from non-halal sources, such as beef or chicken that isn’t sourced from halal suppliers.

Some of the most common components that are found in both types of products - both permitted and prohibited - are gelatin, fats, cooking oils, preservatives additives, and catalysts. These ingredients are considered doubtful until we have the ability to determine whether or not they originate from halal suppliers.

Gelatin Gelatin is a pure protein made from the skins of pigs, cattle hides or from demineralized animal bones - They contain the collagen protein that is used to manufacture gelatin. In Australia, gelatin is very

commonly used in many food products. Gelatin can be halal if it comes from animals that have been slaughtered according to halal standards (zabihah), doubtful if it comes from halal animals but there is no information of the halal status or haram if it comes from prohibited animals. In recent years, some vegan-friendly processed food companies have found a substitute for gelatin, a substance called Agar (Agar Agar).

Agar (Agar Agar) is a gelatinous substance that is extracted from seaweed and processed into flakes, powders and sheets. It is without taste,

ICCV ISLAMIC CO-ORDINATING COUNCIL OF VICTORIA

Dr Bekim Hasani Head of Shariah Affairs,

odour, or colour and can be used in desserts and other cooking without altering the taste or smell. There are few companies around the world that produce gelatin from cattle and are certified halal, including one in Australia. In Australia, food products that contain any major allergens, such as nuts (peanuts, cashews, almonds, walnuts, etc.), shellfish, fish, eggs, sesame seeds, soybeans, wheat, gluten, must be declared on food labels. In addition, foods containing more than 10mg sulphite preservatives must also be stated on food labels because it may trigger asthma attacks in some asthmatics. Although the Australian

ICCV

Department of Health & FSANZ does not mandate that food labels identify the source of gelatin, Halal products can only contain gelatin from either beef that has cattle slaughtered in an Islamic manner, fish, or any other plant-based gelatin. If in doubt, it is important for Muslims living in the west to ask the producer for more information about the source of the ingredient.

Glycerin Glycerin (glycerol) is a natural compound derived from vegetable oils or animal fats. It’s a clear, colorless, odorless and syrupy liquid with a sweet taste. Glycerin is used in a

wide variety of foods and beverages, including nutrition and energy bars, various drinks, cake icings, soft candies, chewing gum, condiments, diet foods, dried fruits and vegetables, marshmallows, soups, spices and seasonings. Glycerin is also naturally found in fermented foods and beverages such as honey, vinegar etc... Products containing glycerin are avoided by Muslims unless the origin of this ingredient is from palm oil and other vegetable oils.

As COVID-19 cases have surged across the nation, so too has sexual abuse & sexual assault of children and young people, cites Kids Helpline. Kids Helpline, a service of yourtown for children and young people aged 5 to 25, reports an increase of nearly 50% (49%) nationally in sexual abuse by family members over the past 6 months 1st January 2021 to 30th June 2021 when compared to the same period in 2020 from young people making contact with counsellors.

“Child sexual abuse can take place behind closed doors. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected daily life through restrictions on people’s movements and interactions, potentially limiting opportunities for child abuse to be detected and reported. It is uncomfortable to think children are being sexually abused by those who have responsibility to care for them most, but Kids Helpline statistics for the past 6 months highlight the vulnerabilities children have in their own homes,” continued Ms Adams. Breakdown by State of Sexual Abuse (Intra familial abuse/Incest) and Sexual Assault (classified as being external to the family) for the period 1st January to 30th

June 2021 vs the same period in 2020: • Victoria has had an increase of 70% in contacts from children and young people making contact with counsellors about sexual abuse (intra familial abuse) and an increase of 19% for reports of sexual assault (classified as being external to the family) • New South Wales has had an increase of 49% in contacts from children and young people making contact with counsellors about sexual abuse and an increase of 43% for reports of sexual assault

Eid Al Adha Mubarak

• Queensland has had an increase of 30% in contacts from children and young people making contact with counsellors about sexual abuse and an increase of 37% for reports of sexual assault “Child vulnerability evidenced by this spike in sexual abuse (intra familial) and sexual assault (external to the family) of children and young people across Australia is shocking and needs to be acknowledged. “Kids Helpline plays an important role as a child protection safety net to support young people and we have employed an additional 100 counsellors to help meet current demand,” said Ms Adams. Kids Helpline supports a new podcast No Laughing Matter in which comedians including Adam Hills, Fiona O’Loughlin and Jean Kittson narrate adult incest victim/ survivors and their stories. A go fund me page has been set up to help ensure the No Laughing Matter podcast series continues to help reduce the prevalence of incest in Australia – https://gofundme. com/f/nolaughingmatter

COMMUNITY

“STAY AT HOME AND DO NOT HAVE VISITORS IN YOUR HOME” Public health experts and community leaders are urging community members to stay at home, as new COVID-19 cases continue to rise. Dr Leena Gupta, Clinical Director of Public Health in Sydney Local Health District says we can keep our families and each other `safe by following the tightened COVID-19 movement and gathering restrictions. “Please do not leave the house unless is absolutely necessary. You should not have visitors to your home at this time. If you do need care or assistance you should only have one

person visiting your home to help. “It is important our community to be aware that additional restrictions are now in place. Only one person per household can leave the home for shopping, and browsing in shops is prohibited; when exercising outdoors you must stay within 10kms from home, and all outdoor gatherings are limited to two people, excluding members of the same household. Remember it is important not to share a car ride with people outside of your household. “The virus is continuing to spread in our communities. We need people to be alert and get tested if you have any symptoms,” she said.

“If you have any symptoms at all, like a sore throat, cough, fever, or runny nose, get tested straight away and then go straight home and stay there until you get your result. You should not go to work or go out for exercise or food while you are waiting for the result of your test. When isolating, don’t share a room or bathroom if possible, keep 1.5 metres apart, and wear a mask when in the same room as others. Also, don’t share household items such as towels, bedding or dishes. You may need to isolate for 14 days if you are identified as a contact of a COVID-19 case. Randa Kattan, CEO of Arab Council

Australia, encourages everyone to follow the government restrictions. “We know taking care of family and friends is very important. You may think you are doing the right thing by visiting your loved ones, or helping around the house instead of isolating. But you are increasing the risk of spreading the virus. Please stay at home and stay safe. “We know this is hard. But we also know that it works. COVID-19 is a dangerous virus. Together, we can stop the spread. The NSW Government has announced new support for renters and landlords impacted by the COVID-19 lockdown, including up to $210 million in grants to eligible landlords. Residential tenants will have greater protection with a targeted eviction moratorium, which will be implemented through legislative changes. Residential landlords who decrease rent for impacted tenants can apply for a grant of up to $1,500 or land tax reductions depending on their circumstances. The land tax relief will be equal to the value of rent reductions provided by landlords to financially distressed tenants, up to 100 per cent of the 2021 land tax year liability; Minister for Better Regulation Kevin Anderson said the short-term tenancy and landlords support package will provide renters and landlords with immediate assistance during the COVID-19 lockdown. “We know a lot of people are currently experiencing hardship and the NSW Government is here to stand with renters and landlords while we work together to get through the latest COVID-19 outbreak,” Mr Anderson said. “Our number one priority is the health and safety of our communities and this package will provide support for both tenants and landlords, ensuring renters continue to have a roof over their heads while maintaining rental incomes for landlords.

“We are putting in place measures to prevent tenants financially impacted by COVID-19 restrictions from being evicted, creating stability while the State and Federal support measures roll out.” Mr Anderson said the new package will, for the first time, provide a rental subsidy grant of up to $1,500 for landlords who offer rent reductions to COVID-19 impacted tenants. “We have always urged renters and landlords impacted by COVID-19 to negotiate and now, thanks to the NSW Government, we expect these negotiations will be easier with landlords to be reimbursed up to $1,500 per tenancy when they reduce a tenant’s rent,” Mr Anderson said. “These measures hinge on landlords and tenants working together through this challenging period and we encourage both parties to enter negotiations in good faith. “The impacts of this virus are widespread and this assistance package from the NSW Government will create an extra layer of certainty and give people one less thing to worry about.” For more information visit: https:// www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/ The rental assistance package is just one part of the NSW Government’s commitment to supporting our communities through COVID-19. LOCKDOWN IN GREATER SYDNEY

Message from Jason Clare MP The next few weeks are going to be really hard for a lot of people in our local community. Western Sydney didn’t cause this mess, but we have to work together to help fix it. That means we have to stay at home, unless we need to leave home for an essential reason like getting food, medicine or getting vaccinated. We can’t visit family and friends because that is how

the virus is spreading at the moment. And whenever we have to go out, wear a mask. If you need more information or assistance, please don’t hesitate to give my office a call on 9790 2466 or email jason@jasonclare.com.au

CLIMATE CHANGE

THE SPREAD OF CORRUPTION UPON THE EARTH That climate warming is occurring is no longer a matter of conjecture. Australia got its wake-up call with a sustained drought, followed by apocalyptic bushfires in late 2019 and early 2020, wiping out billions of native animals. Huge floods, the mouse plague, plus recognition that the Great Barrier Reef is dying, made the crisis as clear as the Plagues of Egypt..

Bilal Cleland dunk1689@gmail.com

This northern hemisphere summer has witnessed the highest temperatures ever recorded in temperate British Columbia where 500 people have died from the heat. Over 200 died in the states of Oregon and Washington. [9 July 2021 Guardian] Changing climate has also brought increased lightning strikes, the cause of bushfires. “More than 710,000 lightning strikes were recorded in British Columbia and western Alberta between 3:00pm on Wednesday and 6:00am on Thursday. This is up from an average 8,300 from the same period over the past five years…” [3 July 2021 ABC News] Scientists have also been shocked by the speed of melting of the “Last Ice Area,” a 1-million-square-kilometre area of floating sea ice north of Greenland, which was expected to withstand global warming for decades. [2 July 2021 First Post]

The need for zero emissions The Climate Council of Australia stated last year “.. it is vital that we replace all fossil fuels use, meet all of our energy needs with renewables … and repair past harm to the atmosphere.” [7 July 2020 Climate Council] The leading nations, the G7, are

waking up to the danger. The Statement created by the Science Academies of the G7 nations lays it out: “Greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced at a faster pace if we are to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to preindustrial levels. …The G7 Countries must implement deployment of disruptive low carbon technologies in infrastructure development, in industrial production and must influence and incentivise personal lifestyle choices to reach the deployment goals. [31 March 2021 Royal Society]

The Islamic Position from 2015 The Islamic Declaration on Global Climate Change, launched in Istanbul 17-18 August 2015, began with a clear call. “Our species, though selected to be a caretaker or steward (khalifah) on the earth, has been the cause of such corruption and devastation on it that we are in danger ending life as we know it on our planet. “ “Corruption upon the earth” is how it regards uncontrolled exploitation of fossil fuels, increasing rates of deforestation, desertification, pollution of the atmosphere, land, inland water systems, and seas and the increased threat of disease. “Corruption has appeared on land and sea Because of what people’s own hands have wrought, So that they may taste something of what they have done; So that hopefully they will turn back.” [Qur’an 30: 41]

AL WASAT 121 ¿ Dhul Hijjah 1442 ¿ July 2021 ‫ هـ ¿ تموز‬1442 ‫ ¿ ذو الحجة‬121 ‫الوسط‬

It concludes with the words of the Prophet: “The world is sweet and verdant, and verily Allah has made you stewards in it, and He sees how you acquit yourselves.” [Muslim from Abu Sa‘id Al-Khudri]

Christians and Climate Change Pope Francis stated in his 2015 encyclical “Laudato Si;” ” We have come to see ourselves as her [Mother Earth] lords and masters, entitled to plunder her at will. …This is why the earth herself, burdened and laid waste, is among the most abandoned and maltreated of our poor; she “groans in travail” (Rom 8:22). “ He quoted the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, who said “For human beings… to destroy the biological diversity of God’s creation; for human beings to degrade the integrity of the earth by causing changes in its climate, by stripping the earth of its natural forests or destroying its wetlands; for human beings to contaminate the earth’s waters, its land, its air, and its life – these are sins”. [24 May 2015 Encyclical Laudato Si Vatican] However the Pew Research Centre reported of US adults in 2015 that political party identification and race and ethnicity were stronger predictors of views about climate change than religious identity or observance. Hispanic Catholics were most likely to say warming was due to human activity and white evangelical Protestants the least likely. [22 October 2015 Pew Research Center]

Australian leaders divided Australia ranked last of nearly 200

countries for action to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions. [1 July 2021 Guardian] The ruling Liberal National Coalition is divided over zero emissions. Our PM made ambiguous statements at the G7 Meeting, sparking a minirevolt bringing Barnaby Joyce, a climate change denier, to become Deputy Prime Minister.. “Mr Joyce warned in February against a target of net zero by 2050 and joined Senator Canavan in signalling he was willing to cross the floor on the issue…” [21 June 2021 SMH] Such views may well be out of touch with Australian opinion. “The Australia Talks survey of about 60,000, showed an increase in the amount of money Australians would be personally willing to spend each year to tackle the problem of climate change. Increases were recorded across age and income brackets, across genders and anywhere from the inner cities to rural areas. The only demographic which did not record an increase was One Nation voters. Liberal and National Party voters recorded an increase of 11 percentage points, and now 1 in 5 of them would spend over $500 a year.” [22 June 2021 Australia Talks. ABC News] Denial of climate warming goes along with fossil fuel lobbying and science denial, usually accompanied by xenophobia. It will be very costly for all of us if such views prevail.
