The fifth edition of Papeleo magazine, Drawing Room’s opportunistic and undisciplined magazine, is launched to coincide with the Madrid edition of the fair, in spring 2021.

Since our last event in Lisbon, we have continued to support the dissemination of international contemporary drawing. This time, with the creation of Drawing Room Store, an ambitious platform for the online exhibition and sale of drawings, where more than 350 artists are already represented.

Three international experts have contributed writing valuable texts about them and we are particularly proud to publish now twenty among these texts.

Jan-Philipp Fruehsorge, director of Drawing Hub Berlin and guest curator of Drawing Room during this year, introduces the publication and discusses the work of artists John Robinson, Martin Assig, Paulo Lisboa, Rui Calçada Bastos, Timo Herbst and Yosman Botero.

The curator Carlos Pinto - a member of the team at the Museu Serralves in Oporto - analyses the creations of Altea Grau and Mizuho Koyama, and the art historian and director of the Sala Robayera in Miengo, Marta Mantecón, signs contributions on Alina Aldea, Ana Teresa Barboza, Brígida Machado, Guillermo de Foucault, Jesús Alberto Pérez Castaños, José Luis Serzo, Kerstin Drechsel, Tamara Arroyo, Rui Matos, Mad Meg, Mar Solís, Marco Pires and Nedda Guidi.

Desde nuestra última cita en Lisboa hemos continuado apoyando la divulgación del dibujo contemporáneo internacional. Esta vez, con la creación de Drawing Room Store, una ambiciosa plataforma de exposición y venta online de dibujos, donde están ya representados más de 350 artistas. Tres expertos internacionales han contribuido escribiendo valiosos textos sobre algunos de ellos y estamos particularmente orgullosos de publicar ahora una veintena.

El director de Drawing Hub Berlin y guest curator de Drawing Room durante este año, Jan-Philipp Fruehsorge presenta la publicación y aborda el trabajo de los artistas John Robinson, Martin Assig, Paulo Lisboa, Rui Calçada Bastos, Timo Herbst y Yosman Botero.

Parece casi inevitable que los futuros historiadores del arte comenten que la producción cultural de nuestros días, el arte de los años 2020 y 2021, deba ser mirado y juzgado por la experiencia de hacer frente a este enorme desafío global llamado COVID-19.

Los artistas de las sociedades civiles libres han tenido el privilegio de elegir lo que les parece pertinente como tema y como campo de interés. Todas las elecciones, incluso los temas más aparentemente insignificantes, las investigaciones idiosincrásicas, crípticas y obsesivas, o las narraciones herméticas son válidas e importantes como expresiones de una mente libre.

Sin embargo, ahora, en medio de la crisis actual, la percepción del arte se ha canalizado inevitablemente a través de un prisma muy estrecho, contextualizándolo según la situación global. Lo queramos o no, no podemos negarlo, se ha convertido en el elefante en la habitación. El arte de hoy se ha producido en condiciones excepcionales sin precedentes.

Organizar una feria de arte en un momento así, supone una energía y un compromiso extraordinarios, confianza, fe en el proyecto y fuertes recursos creativos, mentales y económicos para llevarlo a cabo a pesar de las condiciones menos favorables.

Esta edición, la nº 5 de papeleo, es el producto de un largo viaje, un recorrido por los caminos del dibujo contemporáneo. Es la continuación de lo que se ha hecho en las últimas cuatro ediciones como encuesta y retrato de la producción artística y como publicación que acompaña a las ferias de arte de Madrid y Lisboa. Las ferias Drawing Room y su proyecto de Drawing Room Store han encontrado un número increíble de artistas de muy diversos países, para ser presentados online y offline.

Después de haber tenido el placer de seleccionar a los artistas para la exposición online “Promenade”, me pidieron que trabajara en esta edición y que contribuyera con algunos textos sobre artistas. La variedad de enfoques del dibujo no permite un simple balance o categorización, la creciente apreciación del medio del dibujo no ha sido detenida por la pandemia. Las obras de la época anterior no cambian sus narrativas y mensajes ni sus conceptos estéticos, pero nosotros, el público, hemos cambiado y podemos ver las cosas de forma ligeramente diferente ahora.

It seems almost unavoidable that future art historians will be commenting that the cultural production of our days, the art of the years 2020/2021 need to be looked at and judged by the experience of coping with this enormous global challenge, called COVID-19.

This edition - Nr. 5 - is the product of a longer journey, a travel throughout the paths of contemporary drawing. It continues what has been done in the last 4 editions as a survey and snapshot of artistic production and as a publication that comes with the art fairs in Madrid and Lisbon. The Drawing Room fairs and their project of Drawing Room Store have found an incredible number of artists from quite a diverse array of countries, to be presented online and offline.

It has been the privilege of artists in free civil societies to choose whatever seems relevant as subject matter and as field of interest. Every choice, even the most seemingly insignificant themes, idiosyncratic, cryptic, obsessive researches or hermetic narratives are valid and important as expressions of a free mind.

After having had the pleasure to select artist for the online only exhibition “Promenade“ I was asked to work on this edition and to contribute some texts on the artists. The variety of drawing approaches does not allow for a simple stocktaking or categorization, the ever-growing appreciation of the medium of drawing has not been stopped by the pandemic. Works from the period before, do not change their narratives and messages or their aesthetic concepts and but we, the audience, have changed and we might look at things slightly different now.

However, now in the midst of the current crisis, the perception of art has been inevitably channelled through a very narrowed prism, contextualising it according to the global situation. If we want it or not, we cannot deny, it has become the elephant in the room. Art of today has been produced under exceptional unprecedented conditions.

To organize an art fair in a moment like that, means extraordinary energy and commitment, trust, believe in the project and strong creative, mental and economic resources to actually realise it despite the least favourable conditions.

In the process of the last months in the discussion about the right way to stop the pandemic, we talked about lockdown and vaccination, home schooling and zoom conferences.

En el proceso de los últimos meses, en la discusión sobre la forma correcta de detener la pandemia, hemos hablado de confinamiento y vacunación, de educación en casa y de conferencias vía zoom.

Nuestras creencias y valores han sido cuestionados, los países de todo el mundo han encontrado diferentes soluciones para hacer frente a la crisis, y es la primera vez en un largo período de la historia, que las naciones, más allá de las fronteras y las diferencias culturales, étnicas, económicas y políticas necesitan unir fuerzas.

Entre otras cosas, se ha hecho dolorosamente evidente que, a los ojos de muchos gobiernos, el arte no se considera un sistema relevante y que los centros comerciales se mantienen abiertos mientras que los museos, las galerías y los teatros de ópera se ven obligados a cerrar. Al mismo tiempo, escuchamos las voces en las redes sociales y en las calles cuando la gente se manifiesta. El arte es tan necesario como la comida, la ropa y el hogar. Se le echa mucho de menos y su función de inspirar y reconfortar, de iluminar y provocar, de complacer y alimentar nuestras necesidades de belleza y pensamiento es exactamente lo que le falta a la humanidad, ahora más que nunca.

Los dibujos de los artistas participantes nos enseñan esa cualidad, nos seducen y nos embaucan con complejos discursos. La fragilidad, la delicadeza, la audacia, el placer intelectual que transmite el dibujo es de nuevo una fuerte llamada a todos a seguir la invitación de Drawing Room Madrid 2021.

Cuando Drawing Room abra sus puertas en mayo, online y offline, cuando la gente lea estos textos en papeleo estaremos un paso más cerca de la normalidad.

Our believes and values have been questioned - countries throughout the world have found different solutions to face the crisis, and it is the first time for a long period in history, that nations beyond borders and cultural, ethnical, economic and political differences need to join forces.

It is deeply missed and its function to inspire and to comfort, to enlighten and to provoke, to please and to feed our needs for beauty and thoughts is exactly what humanity now is lacking more than ever.

The drawings of the participating artists teach us that quality, they seduce us and they trick us into complex discourses. The fragility, the delicacy the boldness, the intellectual pleasure that drawing conveys is again a strong call to everyone to follow the invitation of Drawing Room Madrid 2021.

When Drawing Room will open its doors in May, online and offline, when people will read those texts, we will be a step closer back to normality.

Among others, one thing became painfully obvious, that in the eyes of many governments art is rather not considered system relevant and that shopping centers were kept open, while museums, galleries, and opera houses were forced to shut down. At the same time we hear the voices in social media and in the streets when people demonstrate. Art is needed as much as food and clothing and a home.

ALINA ALDEA Romania, 1974 Alina Aldea succeeds in capturing the feeling of fragility and uncertainty of the present time by resorting to abstract geometric constructions executed in rigorous black and white. These compositions show a succession of linear wefts and structures arranged in an orderly fashion in space, producing multidimensional visual effects on the flat background. The alignments described cross the surface, weaving themselves into the void to draw patterns generated by repeating, except for slight variations, the same line that ends up extending beyond the limits imposed by the support.

Alina Aldea logra plasmar el sentimiento de fragilidad e incertidumbre propio del momento actual recurriendo a unas construcciones geométricas abstractas ejecutadas en un riguroso blanco y negro. Estas composiciones muestran una sucesión de tramas lineales y estructuras dispuestas ordenadamente en el espacio, produciendo efectos visuales multidimensionales sobre el fondo plano. Las alineaciones descritas atraviesan la superficie tejiéndose en el vacío para dibujar patrones generados a fuerza de repetir, salvo mínimas variaciones, un mismo trazado que se acaba prolongando más allá de los límites que impone el soporte.

The opacity of the background only increases the resonance of the light; in fact, some of the drawings resemble a kind of rays or beams that emit their own vibration and radiance, reinforcing the sensation of weightlessness, while at the same time giving off a dynamic sense that harks back to the origins of perceptual abstraction. However, the apparent synchrony seems to be on the verge of breaking down, as all these formations end up folding in on themselves or confronting others of greater density and volume, which provokes a certain tension and instability, as if the forces of entropy were to act at any moment, jeopardizing the presumed order and equilibrium of the system.

La opacidad del fondo no hace más que acrecentar la resonancia de la luz; de hecho, algunos dibujos se asemejan a una especie de rayos o haces que emiten su propia vibración y resplandor, lo que refuerza la sensación de ingravidez, al tiempo que repercute en un sentido dinámico que remite a los orígenes de la abstracción perceptual. Sin embargo, la aparente sincronía parece estar a punto de quebrarse, pues todas estas formaciones se acaban plegando sobre sí mismas o confrontando con otras de mayor densidad y volumen, lo que provoca cierta tensión e inestabilidad, como si las fuerzas de la entropía fuesen a actuar de un momento a otro poniendo en jaque el presunto orden y equilibrio del sistema.

ALTEA GRAU Spain, 1985 Altea Grau lives and works in London, where she combines art practice with her doctoral research at the London University of the Arts. Specialized in printmaking, she investigates the book and the page and their aesthetic and emotional implications in the communication process.

Altea Grau vive y trabaja en Londres, donde combina la práctica artística con su investigación doctoral en la London University of The Arts. Especializada en grabado, investiga el libro y la página y sus implicaciones estéticas y emocionales en el proceso de comunicación.

Through ideas closely linked to the concept of page such as duality, echo, reflection or the idea of folding page, Altea Grau’s work investigates conventional communication processes and the idea of the page as a relating mechanism.

A través de ideas estrechamente vinculadas al concepto de página como la dualidad, el eco, el reflejo o la página plegable, la obra de Altea Grau investiga los procesos de comunicación convencionales y el concepto de página como mecanismo de relación.

Describing her works as “allusions to texts”, her artworks call upon a curious approach, an intimate look from its viewers. Almost imperceptible, Grau’s works can be defined as a new trace of writing, corresponding to silenced words that remain just perceptible enough to propel one’s imagination.

Descritas como “alusiones a los textos”, sus obras reclaman un acercamiento curioso, una mirada íntima de sus espectadores. Casi imperceptibles, las obras de Grau pueden definirse como un nuevo rastro de escritura, correspondiente a palabras silenciadas que permanecen lo suficientemente perceptibles como para impulsar la imaginación.

A counter position where the erasure of the written word is forever metamorphed as signs, mark and actions that enable us to recover the breath and make use of a language capable of radically modifying our life.

Una posición contraria en la que el borrado de la palabra escrita se metamorfosea para siempre en signos, marcas y acciones que nos permiten recuperar el aliento y hacer uso de un lenguaje capaz de modificar radicalmente nuestra vida.

Providing the ability to disable unidirectional interpretations about history and writing towards new forms of communicating the uncommunicable.

ANA TERESA BARBOZA Peru, 1981 Ana Teresa Barboza’s graphite drawings on canvas reproduce a careful selection of plant leaves used in rituals that are part of the tradition of communities from different latitudes and time periods, including some from pre-Hispanic times. The plant formations are accompanied by texts and coloured bands embroidered with natural fibres that inform us of their properties and pigments, while incorporating a tactile dimension that intensifies the connection between body and representation.

The artist resorts to textile practices as a way of collecting the invisible heritage of her ancestors, recovering anonymous knowledge and re-establishing the link with nature, the provider of an infinite number of useful resources that have been disappearing in favour of other more economically profitable productive formulas.

In this way, Ana Teresa Barboza preserves artisanal procedures that have been traditionally dissociated from the major arts and are more related to biological processes, from her own textile experience to vegetable dyeing, as can be seen in other works in which she shows the decomposition of minerals in diagrams of strata of different colours which, in turn, can be extracted from plants from the same place (this is the case of the Peruvian region of Lambayeque). This type of research allows her to reinterpret nature from a different order and to introduce a new temporal perspective, as plant life obtains its nutrients from the mineral universe and, in the end, returns to it as part of a cycle of mutual and infinite feedback.

Los dibujos sobre tela con grafito de Ana Teresa Barboza reproducen una cuidada selección de hojas de plantas utilizadas en rituales que son parte de la tradición de comunidades de distintas latitudes y temporalidades, incluyendo algunas de época prehispánica. Las formaciones vegetales están acompañadas de textos y bandas de color bordadas con fibras naturales que nos informan de sus propiedades y pigmentos, al tiempo que incorporan una dimensión táctil que intensifica la conexión entre cuerpo y representación.

La artista recurre a las prácticas textiles como vía para recoger la herencia invisible de sus ancestros, recuperando saberes anónimos y reestableciendo el vínculo con la naturaleza, proveedora de infinidad de recursos útiles que han ido desapareciendo en favor de otras fórmulas productivas más rentables en términos económicos.

Ana Teresa Barboza preserva de este modo procedimientos artesanales tradicionalmente desvinculados de las artes mayores y más afines a los procesos biológicos, desde la propia experiencia textil al teñido vegetal, como puede apreciarse en otras obras en las que muestra la descomposición de minerales en diagramas de estratos de diferentes colores que, a su vez, se pueden extraer de plantas procedentes de un mismo lugar (es el caso de la región peruana de Lambayeque). Este tipo de investigación le permite reinterpretar la naturaleza desde otro orden e introducir una nueva perspectiva temporal, pues la vida vegetal obtiene sus nutrientes del universo mineral para, al final, acabar retornando a él como parte de un ciclo de mutua e infinita retroalimentación.

BRÍGIDA MACHADO Portugal, 1980 The exploitation of the habitat, adaptation to the environment or the tense relationship and dependence of human beings on new technologies are some of the issues present in Brígida Machado’s drawings. The artist poses, with evident doses of sarcasm and humour, a succession of vignettes or unbounded compartments containing small scenes juxtaposed without solution of continuity, starring a strange cast of characters concentrated on carrying out different actions. Alongside them appears a whole repertoire of utensils and signs of very diverse signs, from work tools, household goods and technological or entertainment devices to danger warning signs or computer symbols and even a kind of polyhedron that acts as a disruptive element with which to introduce a certain notion of order into the chaos of so much feverish activity.

The agility of the drawing and the vivid contrasts of colour that dot the compositions independently of the lines generate a profound dynamism that intensifies the nonsense and absurdity of each scene.

La explotación del hábitat, la adaptación al medio o la tensa relación y dependencia del ser humano hacia las nuevas tecnologías son algunas de las cuestiones presentes en los dibujos de Brígida Machado. La artista plantea, con evidentes dosis de sarcasmo y humor, una sucesión de viñetas o compartimentos no acotados que contienen pequeñas escenas yuxtapuestas sin solución de continuidad, protagonizadas por un extraño elenco de personajes concentrados en la realización de diferentes acciones. Junto a ellos aparece todo un repertorio de utensilios y señales de signo muy diverso, desde herramientas de trabajo, enseres domésticos y dispositivos tecnológicos o de entretenimiento a rótulos de advertencia de peligro o símbolos informáticos y hasta una especie de poliedros que actúan como elemento disruptivo con el que introducir cierta noción de orden frente al caos de tanta febril actividad. La agilidad del dibujo y los vivos contrastes de color que salpican las composiciones independizándose de las líneas, genera un profundo dinamismo que intensifica el sinsentido y el disparate de cada escena.

In other drawings, we observe a kind of towers erected by an unusual cast of hybrid beings between humans and other animals, which seem to suggest a possible coexistence between species and, in addition, the construction of other affections and relationships, perhaps because, as Donna Haraway pointed out, “we are, constitutively, companion species” who need each other, despite the unreasonableness of our behaviour and the absurdity of the civilisation we have built.

En otros dibujos, observamos una especie de torres levantadas por un insólito elenco de seres híbridos entre humanos y otros animales, que parecen sugerir una posible convivencia entre especies y, por añadidura, la construcción de otros afectos y relaciones, tal vez porque, según señaló Donna Haraway, «somos, constitutivamente, especies de compañía» que nos necesitamos unas a otras, pese a la sinrazón de nuestros comportamientos y lo absurdo de la civilización que hemos construido.

GUILLERMO DE FOUCAULT Spain, 1996 John Berger stated that the creation of an image begins by questioning what we see and making certain marks. Drawing, then, is not only to lay out on paper, but also to receive and know with the hand, so that each record contains a whole vital experience which, moreover, is susceptible of being simultaneous with others.

John Berger afirmaba que la creación de una imagen comienza por interrogar lo que vemos y hacer ciertas marcas. Dibujar entonces no es solo disponer sobre el papel, sino también recibir y conocer con la mano, de manera que cada registro contenga toda una experiencia vital que, además, sea susceptible de simultanearse con otras.

Between the visual essay and the sketchbook, Guillermo de Foucault structures his drawings as places where a whole constellation of images coexists and dialogues with written notes. This mise-enscène serves as a starting point for a series of reflections on artistic practice, sprinkled with notes of humour, where each fragment, with its own nature, perspective and graphic translation, coexists with the rest in an undefined space, with no pretensions of composing a diary or a linear narrative. The drawings simply appear, like passages of an impossible story, punctuated by digressive notes, discontinuous scenes and free associations, with which the artist translates the flow between his own subjectivity and the outside world. The result is small extracts that represent a combination of experiences, impressions, landscapes, figures, artistic references, observations and ideas interconnected in an attractive and strange miscellany, where the forms acquire meaning as part of the same whole, that is to say, a grouping of elements with a common property.

Entre el ensayo visual y el cuaderno de apuntes, Guillermo de Foucault estructura sus dibujos como lugares donde coexiste y dialoga toda una constelación de imágenes acompañadas de anotaciones escritas. Esta puesta en escena sirve de punto de partida a una serie de reflexiones sobre la práctica artística, salpicada de notas de humor, donde cada fragmento, con su propia naturaleza, perspectiva y traducción gráfica, convive con el resto en un espacio indefinido, sin pretensiones de componer un diario o una narrativa lineal.

Los dibujos simplemente aparecen, como pasajes de un relato imposible, jalonado de notas digresivas, escenas discontinuas y asociaciones libres, con las que el artista traduce el flujo entre su propia subjetividad y el mundo exterior. JESÚS ALBERTO PÉREZ CASTAÑOS Spain, 1950 A dense accumulation of well-defined and contrasting shapes moulds the landscape that serves as a habitat for strange beings, made up of eyes, mouths and limbs, together with a myriad of doodles and a sharp assortment of written messages that transport us to a universe as dystopian as it is hilarious. This colourful iconography with its nonsensical and noisy mise-en-scène reveals the author’s devotion to urban and street cultures: from graffiti, comics and illustration to literature and cinema, passing through psychedelia, Anglo-American pop and neo-expressionist bad painting.

Una densa acumulación de formas bien perfiladas y contrastadas moldea el paisaje que sirve de hábitat a unos seres extraños, hechos de ojos, bocas y extremidades, acompañados de un sinfín de garabatos y de un afilado surtido de mensajes escritos que nos trasladan a un universo tan distópico como hilarante.

Esta iconografía colorista con su disparatada y ruidosa puesta en escena pone de manifiesto la devoción del autor por las culturas urbanas y callejeras: del grafiti, el cómic o la ilustración a la literatura y el cine pasando por la psicodelia, el pop angloamericano o la bad painting neoexpresionista.

The compositions of Pérez Castaños, always critical and incisive, seem to take on the unhinged logic and nonsense taken to excess of our times, acting as a kind of mirror that presents to us, in our faces and without filters, that obsession with presence and that need to fill the gaps to the point of saturation, that is so characteristic of what we call the Occident. In the interstices, however, we can also find subtle metaphors, although in order to notice them it is necessary to take our time and go through each drawing from a slower, more self-critical point of view and with an unwavering sense of humour.

Las composiciones de Pérez Castaños, siempre crítico e incisivo, parecen asumir la lógica desquiziada y el sinsentido llevado al exceso propios de nuestro tiempo, actuando como una suerte de espejo que nos presenta, a la cara y sin filtros, esa obsesión por la presencia y esa necesidad de llenar los huecos hasta la saturación tan característica de eso que llamamos Occidente. En los intersticios, sin embargo, podemos encontrar también metáforas sutiles, aunque para advertirlas es preciso darse tiempo y recorrer cada dibujo desde una óptica más pausada, autocrítica y con un irrenunciable sentido del humor.

JOHN ROBINSON United Kingdom, 1981 Being asked about his artistic practice, John Robinson replied: «I suppose my work is the result of performative actions, everything happens in the studio - I keep the parameters of everything I do very small». A monochromatic palette, that he refers to as “the colour of my sub consciousness“ and specific formats and subjects - these are the elements to focus on.

Al ser preguntado por su práctica artística, John Robinson respondió «Supongo que mi trabajo es el resultado de acciones performativas, todo ocurre en el estudio, mantengo los parámetros de todo lo que hago muy pequeños». Una paleta monocromática, a la que se refiere como “el color de mi subconsciencia”, y formatos y temas específicos, son los elementos en los que se centra.

For over 14 years he follows what calling a “formula“ would be a rude misinterpretation of these self imposed rules to let “the other” take over - that is to say, to replace the John Robinson who is way too smart and knows everything about art history, with the man in the Adidas jacket and the blond wig, or the man with a mask that looks like a Picasso painting, or a balloon, or a paper bag that is a painting by Rubens…in all seriousness.

He was right, but great art was also produced like that, and the image of that individual in his absurd, painful and beautifully touching solitude, as a Vermeer’s woman reading a letter or most of Francis Bacon’s portraits (both heroes of Robinson) remain icons of the human condition.

KERSTIN DRECHSEL Germany, 1966 Kerstin Drechsel’s archive of images forms a valuable diary of drawings that function as a reservoir of memory and a space of political agency with which to disarticulate certain clichés and stereotypes relating to binary constructions encoded from heteronormativity. The artist questions rigid gender prescriptions, advocating instead a queer feminism that manifests itself in the activities that the protagonists of this series carry out (playing in a band, boxing, painting a wall or urinating), while affirming their identity in the public context, beyond any reductive binomial. The artist draws on activist culture to enable other ways of thinking about the body in its personal, social and affective dimension, proposing a whole repertoire of dissident behaviours with respect to the old norm that identifies behaviours labeled as masculine with men and feminine with women.

El archivo de imágenes de Kerstin Drechsel conforma un valioso diario de dibujos que funcionan como una reserva de memoria y un espacio de agencia política con el que desarticular algunos clichés y estereotipos relativos a las construcciones binarias codificadas desde la heteronormatividad. La artista cuestiona las rígidas prescripciones de género abogando en su lugar por un feminismo queer que se manifiesta en las actividades que realizan las protagonistas de esta serie (tocar en una banda, boxear, pintar una pared u orinar), mientras afirman su identidad en el contexto público, más allá de cualquier binomio reductor. La artista se nutre de la cultura activista para habilitar otras maneras de pensar el cuerpo en su dimensión personal, social y afectiva, proponiendo todo un repertorio de conductas disidentes respecto a la vieja norma que identifica los comportamientos etiquetados como masculinos con los hombres y los femeninos con las mujeres.

Kerstin Drechsel dispenses with the line and constructs the forms only from patches of colour. Watercolour and gouache allow her to approach the pictorial gesture by playing with transparency or opacity and carrying out a chromatic gradation that helps to concentrate the gaze on the image, reinforcing its expressive value, which prevails over the merely descriptive.

Kerstin Drechsel prescinde de la línea y construye las formas solo a partir de manchas de color. RUI MATOS Portugal, 1959 When Giacometti went through that moment of inflection that led him to make the transfer from the interior model to the exterior, he began to reduce forms to a minimum, undertaking a conscientious analysis of the relationship between matter and space that resulted in a significant increase in his expressive value. In a similar process and from an abstract position, Rui Matos strips sculpture of its materiality in order to draw in the air, giving form to a void that becomes a substantial constituent element of his compositions.

Cuando Giacometti atravesó aquel momento de inflexión que le llevó a realizar el trasvase del modelo interior al exterior, comenzó a reducir las formas al mínimo, emprendiendo un concienzudo análisis de la relación entre materia y espacio que se tradujo en un significativo incremento de su valor expresivo. En un proceso análogo y desde un posicionamiento abstracto, Rui Matos despoja a la escultura de su materialidad para dibujar en el aire, dando forma a un vacío que se transforma en un elemento constitutivo sustancial de sus composiciones.

The filiform outlines of iron painted in flat colours, possibly inspired by natural forms, harmonise geometry and gesture, adopting different configurations and causing matter to embrace space in order to make it be.

His is a resonant emptiness that is revealed within each piece; however, it has little to do with nothingness or absence, as it makes the forms be perceived from a dynamic perspective and deeply connected to life. It is a void that, despite its invisibility and intangibility, is present, just like the matter that outlines its contours. Drawing thus becomes the vehicle for generating experience that lies at the root of all that is visible.

Los trazados filiformes de hierro pintado en colores planos, posiblemente inspirados en formas naturales, armonizan geometría y gesto adoptando distintas configuraciones y provocando que la materia acoja el espacio para hacerlo ser. El suyo es un vacío resonante que se revela dentro de cada pieza; sin embargo, poco tiene que ver con la nada o la ausencia, pues hace que las formas sean percibidas desde una perspectiva dinámica y profundamente conectada con la vida.

Es un vacío que, pese a su invisibilidad e intangibilidad, está presente, igual que la materia que perfila sus contornos. El dibujo se convierte así en el vehículo generador de experiencia que se encuentra en la raíz de todo lo visible.

MAD MEG France, 1976 The gallery of portraits, in rigorous black and white, shows us a whole assortment of supposedly “honourable” men with the heads of invertebrate animals, depicted full-length and grandiloquently dressed, wearing their medals, flaunting wealth and power. This disturbing repertoire serves the artist to deconstruct, through irony, parody and black humour, the patriarchal necropolitical regime, one of the most harmful constructs for the totality of living beings.

La galería de retratos, en riguroso blanco y negro, nos va mostrando todo un surtido de hombres supuestamente “honorables” con cabeza de animales invertebrados, representados de cuerpo entero y vestidos de forma grandilocuente, luciendo sus medallas, ostentando riqueza y poder. Este perturbador repertorio sirve a la artista para deconstruir, a través de la ironía, la parodia y el humor negro, el régimen necropolítico patriarcal, uno de los constructos más dañinos para la totalidad de los seres vivos.

Mad Meg draws on a wide spectrum of references and quotations from canonical art history, accompanied by calligraphic texts that run through the forms, composing a visual texture that requires meticulous inspection, as the drawing presents the engraving pattern of a scientific illustration, that is, presumably objective, where the mixture of elements endows each composition with an extraordinary iconographic power.

Mad Meg se nutre de un amplio espectro de referencias y citas procedentes de la Historia del Arte canónica, acompañadas de textos caligrafiados que recorren las formas componiendo una textura visual que requiere una inspección meticulosa, pues el dibujo presenta la trama del grabado de una ilustración científica, esto es, presumiblemente objetiva, donde la mixtura de elementos dota a cada composición de una extraordinaria potencia iconográfica.

The profusion of detail and the meticulousness with which this artist, whose name is a transcription of Dülle Griet, the epigraph of a work signed by Brueghel the Elder - one of her references - in the mid16th century, is impressive. Mad Meg resorts to excess and sarcasm to caricature these patriarchs who, despite being the emblem of Western civilisation, have abdicated all humanity, and in doing so questions the ideologies on which they have founded their dominion, from colonialism to neoliberal capitalism.

Impresiona la profusión de detalles y la minuciosidad con que opera esta artista cuyo nombre es la transcripción de Dülle Griet, epígrafe de una obra firmada por Brueghel el Viejo –uno de sus referentes– a mediados del siglo XVI. Mad Meg recurre al exceso y el sarcasmo para caricaturizar a estos patriarcas que, pese a constituir el emblema de la civilización occidental, han abdicado de toda humanidad, y de paso cuestionar las ideologías sobre las cuales han cimentado su dominio, del colonialismo al capitalismo neoliberal.

MAR SOLÍS Spain, 1967 Mar Solís approaches drawing as a much more effective means of understanding space from the expressive point of view. This is especially appreciated in those ink-onpaper compositions in which she presents abstract details configured from the gesture and the stain, playing with their opacity and transparency – as if the shadows projecting sculptures had finally managed to merge the material with the intangible – or following formulations typical of oriental aesthetics, as if calligraphy could be the same thing as landscape.

Mar Solís aborda el dibujo como un medio de comprensión del espacio mucho más eficaz desde el punto de vista expresivo. Esto se aprecia de manera especial en aquellas composiciones de tinta sobre papel en las que presenta detalles abstractos configurados a partir del gesto y la mancha, jugando con su opacidad y transparencia, como si las sombras que proyectan sus esculturas hubiesen logrado definitivamente fundir lo material con lo intangible o, siguiendo formulaciones propias de la estética oriental, como si la caligrafía pudiera ser la misma cosa que el paisaje.

The artist tends to reproduce the characteristic lines of her three-dimensional pieces to reinforce their proximity to the architectural through different construction elements, from arches and domes to buttresses and arcs-boutants, or to suggest a deep connection with the organic and the vegetal through lines that they hint at branches, wooded paths or original formations of concentric circles.

La artista tiende a reproducir los trazados característicos de sus piezas tridimensionales para reforzar su proximidad con lo arquitectónico a través de distintos elementos constructivos, desde arcos y cúpulas a contrafuertes y arbotantes, o bien sugerirnos una conexión profunda con lo orgánico y lo vegetal mediante trazos que insinúan ramas, senderos boscosos o formaciones originarias de círculos concéntricos.

Its structures, light and flexible, seem to rise against the heaviness of the world, describing curves and folds in the air that replicate the dynamism of our ecosystem and that non-permanence of everything that lives. They are forms that evoke nature, confirming its fragility but, at the same time, they offer themselves as welcoming spaces, nests or shelters, suitable for meditation and silence.

Sus estructuras, livianas y flexibles, parecen elevarse contra la pesantez del mundo describiendo curvas y pliegues en el aire que replican el dinamismo de nuestro ecosistema y esa no permanencia de todo lo que está vivo. Son, en este sentido, formas que evocan la naturaleza constatando su fragilidad pero, al mismo tiempo, se ofrecen como espacios de acogida, nidos o refugios, aptos para la meditación y el silencio.

MARCO PIRES Portugal, 1977 We know that maps are not very objective constructions that promise an illusory sensation of domestication of space or the fiction of an impossible order that usually responds to a strategy of domination and control by power, since the world, beyond Borges’ story, cannot be reduced to a single supposedly universal image. Marco Pires’ landscapes emerge from different topographical plans from the Portuguese Army Geographical Institute, ratifying this idea. The cartographic conventions enter into a dialectic pulse with the abstract forms traced with graphite dust, deposited in multiple layers as in the natural processes of sedimentation, destabilizing their supposed two-dimensionality, given that the drawing represents another form of knowledge where subjective perception of the territory and the interior space is as meaningful as the exterior, regardless of any scientific pretension, correspondence or resemblance.

Sabemos que los mapas son construcciones poco objetivas que prometen una ilusoria sensación de domesticación del espacio o la ficción de un orden imposible que suele responder a una estrategia de dominación y control por parte del poder, pues el mundo, más allá del relato de Borges, no puede reducirse a una sola imagen supuestamente universal. Los paisajes de Marco Pires emergen de diferentes planos topográficos procedentes del Instituto Geográfico del Ejército de Portugal ratificando esta idea. Las convenciones cartográficas entran en pulsión dialéctica con las formas abstractas trazadas con polvo de grafito, depositado en múltiples capas como en los procesos naturales de sedimentación, desestabilizando su pretendida bidimensionalidad, dado que el dibujo representa otra forma de conocimiento donde percepción subjetiva del territorio y el espacio interior tiene tanto significado como el exterior, al margen de cualquier pretensión científica, correspondencia o semejanza.

Marco Pires configures a landscape that contains traces of the real over a fictional one, insisting on its constructed nature as opposed to the pretended - and false verisimilitude of the map. The presentation is then superimposed on the representation, providing us with an interesting reflection on the distance that separates reality from the images that pretend to embody its reflection and underlining, in short, the independence of artistic language.

Marco Pires configura un paisaje que contiene trazas de lo real sobre otro de ficción, insistiendo en su naturaleza construida frente a la pretendida –y falsa– verosimilitud del mapa. La presentación se superpone entonces a la representación, proporcionándonos una interesante reflexión acerca de la distancia que separa la realidad de las imágenes que pretenden encarnar su reflejo y subrayando, en definitiva, la independencia del lenguaje artístico.

In Koyama, we encounter an artist whose career leads to her work’s current singularity and maturity, a radical contemporary calligraphy, what she terms as “calli-graphiti”.

For each of her works, both theme and composition are never left to chance and follow a specific calculus streaming from letters, words or texts such as in her work’s series Gennji Monogatari and ALICE, inspired by Murasaki Shikibu’s Tale of Genji and Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s adventures in the wonderland.

En Koyama nos encontramos con una artista cuya carrera le ha llevado a la singularidad y madurez actuales, una caligrafía contemporánea radical, que ella denomina “cali-grafiti”. En cada una de sus obras, ni el tema ni la composición se dejan al azar y siguen un cálculo específico que parte de las letras, las palabras o los textos, como en sus series Gennji Monogatari y ALICE, inspiradas por el Cuento de Genji de Murasaki Shikibu y por Las aventuras de Alicia en el país de las maravillas de Lewis Carroll.

In Sumi Works we find a mixture of opposites between the usage of a contemporaneity take of shosouin, a traditional Japanese calligraphy “which prohibits artists from straying from the rules”, but where the artist herself has reformulated it to encompass a wider audience by seeking ideas from Anglo-Saxon poetry as opposed to the traditional Japanese, and American’s abstract expressionism and graffiti art who bring forth more automated expressive compositions dictated by a specific moment or feeling.

En Sumi Works encontramos una mezcla de opuestos entre el uso de una versión contemporánea del shosouin, una caligrafía tradicional japonesa “que prohíbe a los artistas apartarse de las reglas”, pero que la propia artista ha reformulado para abarcar un público más amplio buscando ideas de la poesía anglosajona en contraposición a la tradicional japonesa, y el expresionismo abstracto y el arte del grafiti americanos que aportan composiciones expresivas más automatizadas dictadas por un momento o sentimiento específico.

NEDDA GUIDI Italy, 1927 - 2015 During the 1960s and 1970s, the Italian artist, teacher and thinker Nedda Guidi produced a significant amount of works in the field of drawing, which helped her to formulate an alternative means of expression to ceramics in an attempt to transcend, as she herself states, not only the more sensorial part - or that direct contact with matter and the interrelation between the four elements - but also to formulate ideas and problems that highlight the value of the processual beyond the artistic object. These compositions, in which certain parameters of the informalist lexicon resonate, allow her to address questions that have to do with the modular developments that she would later transfer to the three dimensions, as well as the application of new chromatic ranges and textures, the exploration of different intersections between planes and the development of abstract forms of a geometric nature. Through drawing and experimentation with crayons, chalks and gouaches, Nedda Guidi develops an independent production with which she manages to enter a different space, without renouncing the profound symbolic connotations that connect her work with its origins and, in particular, with the tradition of Mediterranean cultures, such as the Minoan civilisation, present in some of her series.

Durante los años sesenta y setenta, la artista, docente y pensadora italiana Nedda Guidi lleva a cabo una significativa producción en el ámbito del dibujo que le servirá para formular una vía de expresión alternativa a la cerámica con la que tratará de trascender, tal como ella misma manifiesta, no solo la parte más sensorial –o ese contacto directo con la materia y la interrelación entre los cuatro elementos–, sino de formular ideas y problemas que ponen de manifiesto el valor de lo procesual más allá del objeto artístico. Estas composiciones, en las que resuenan determinados parámetros del léxico informalista, le permiten abordar cuestiones que tienen que ver con los desarrollos modulares que luego trasladará a las tres dimensiones, así como la aplicación de nuevas gamas cromáticas y texturas, la exploración de diferentes intersecciones entre planos y el desarrollo de formas abstractas de carácter geométrico. A través del dibujo y la experimentación con ceras, tizas o gouaches, Nedda Guidi desarrolla una producción independiente con la que logra adentrase en un espacio otro, sin renunciar a las profundas connotaciones simbólicas que conectan su trabajo con los orígenes y, en particular, con la tradición de culturas mediterráneas como la civilización minoica, presente en alguna de sus series.

PAULO LISBOA Portugal, 1977 When we think of projected light on a screen, we usually would have an idea of movement and figuration of editing and narration. This projection would rarely be abstract and rarely be still. The artist Paulo Lisboa, is challenging our physical experience and our visual perception to the point where those questions – is it light? is it a projection? is it possibly even moving? – become as relevant as the elementary key question: what is an image?

Cuando pensamos en la luz proyectada sobre una pantalla, solemos tener una idea de movimiento y figuración del montaje y la narración. Esta proyección rara vez sería abstracta y rara vez estaría quieta. El artista Paulo Lisboa, desafía nuestra experiencia física y nuestra percepción visual hasta el punto de que esas preguntas -¿es luz? ¿es una proyección? ¿es posible que se esté moviendo? - se vuelven tan relevantes como la pregunta clave elemental: ¿qué es una imagen?

Lisboa is drawing with graphite on aluminium and on paper, but he evokes the most subtle and surprising appearance of an object radiating as if the light source was placed within the drawing. Lisboa has in fact a deep interest in film projectors and the aesthetic of the cinematographic apparatus. His installations use these devices to questions the very nature of image creation through light.

Lisboa dibuja con grafito sobre aluminio y sobre papel, pero evoca la apariencia más sutil y sorprendente de un objeto que irradia como si la fuente de luz estuviera colocada dentro del dibujo. De hecho, Lisboa tiene un profundo interés por los proyectores de cine y la estética de los aparatos cinematográficos. Sus instalaciones utilizan estos dispositivos para cuestionar la propia naturaleza de la creación de imágenes a través de la luz.

They return the gaze into the object, the source of the projection. There is a striking element of paradox, that is created through the material presence (graphite on a surface) and the impression of immateriality (light).

Lisboa successfully seduces us to the suspension of disbelieve. A game already played by the antique painters – art as perfect mimesis. Zeuxis painted grapes that have been so realistic that birds have been deceived and picked at them. But here not even something tangible is to grasp – however, we look at drawings that perfectly evoke, matter, light and abstract shapes.

Hay un elemento sorprendente de paradoja, que se crea a través de la presencia material (grafito sobre una superficie) y la impresión de inmaterialidad (luz). Lisboa nos seduce con éxito mediante la suspensión de la incredulidad. Un juego que ya practicaban los pintores de la antigüedad: el arte como mimesis perfecta. Zeuxis pintaba uvas tan realistas que los pájaros se engañaban y las picaban. Pero aquí ni siquiera hay que captar algo tangible, miramos los dibujos que evocan perfectamente, la materia, la luz y las formas abstractas.

RUI CALÇADA BASTOS Portugal, 1971 Drawing is one medium among many others for Rui Calçada Bastos, and this fluidity and permeability is informing all of his practices.

He moves smoothly from one discipline to another, photography, objects, video, they are all linked by a common interest, by his sensible and attentive search for the overlooked and forgotten, for things in transition, for a poetics of space and for the marvellous enigmatic in items displaced and broken, that he reconfigures.

Para Rui Calçada Bastos, el dibujo es un medio entre muchos otros, y esta fluidez y permeabilidad informan todas sus prácticas.

Bastos’ choice for that particular material comes as no surprise as he knows very well how to create multi-layered contingent reference systems for synchronic readings.

con una galería imaginaria de antepasados, artistas admirados del pasado, como Lygia Clark, Constantin Brancusi o Alfredo Volpi, y lo hace utilizando sobres de papel como principal elemento de construcción y convirtiendo así el medio en el mensaje. La elección de Bastos por ese material en particular no es una sorpresa, ya que sabe muy bien cómo crear sistemas de referencia contingentes de múltiples capas para lecturas sincrónicas.

The folding structures that is inherent in the envelopes speak of an entire past generation of artists, like Dorothea Rockburn or Sol LeWitt, that have been key for the evolution of drawing as a medium of self reflexivity. Just like the “suspension lines“ in string or rope quote Eva Hesse or Richard Tuttle reflections about the principles of line.

Las estructuras de plegado inherentes a los sobres hablan de toda una generación pasada de artistas como Dorothea Rockburn o Sol LeWitt que han sido clave para la evolución del dibujo como medio de autorreflexión. TAMARA ARROYO Spain, 1972 The starting point for these drawings are simple sheets of graph paper with perforations on the sides, perhaps from an archive. Tamara Arroyo goes over the paper tracing a series of bands, grids and other abstract configurations, devoid of any artifice, with which she interferes in the monotony of the matrix that serves as a base. The domesticated space is then subverted by a new pattern that also has the potential to expand beyond its limits.

El punto de partida de estos dibujos son unas sencillas hojas de papel cuadriculado con perforaciones laterales, tal vez procedentes de un archivo. Tamara Arroyo recorre el papel trazando una serie de bandas, retículas y otras configuraciones de tipo abstracto, desprovistas de todo artificio, con las que interfiere en la monotonía de la matriz que le sirve de base.

El espacio domesticado queda entonces subvertido por una nueva pauta que además tiene el potencial de expandirse más allá de sus límites.

The compositions resulting from this process, whose formalization evokes the simplicity and sense of imperfect order that characterized the modus operandi of the artist Agnes Martin, present a rhythm and geometry that, without hiding their manual imprint and irregularities, act once again as a dissonant factor. Gesture thus makes possible another way of inhabiting the real, transforming representation into a territory of investigation and contact where space is traversed, experienced and, in short, lived.

Las composiciones que resultan de este proceso, cuya formalización evoca la sencillez y ese sentido de orden imperfecto que caracterizaba el modus operandi de la artista Agnes Martin, presentan un ritmo y una geometría que, sin ocultar su impronta manual y sus irregularidades, actúan de nuevo como factor disonante. El gesto posibilita entonces otra forma de habitar lo real, transformando la representación en un territorio de investigación y contacto donde el espacio es transitado, experimentado y, en definitiva, vivido.

The drawing, reconverted into a place, suggests different structures, enclosures and devices of separation, organization, protection or isolation, like those we find in our everyday environment, provoking the encounter between its own body and the constructions that define our ways of inhabiting, a physically mediated relationship that becomes codified by means of symbols.

El dibujo, reconvertido en lugar, sugiere diferentes estructuras, cerramientos y dispositivos de separación, ordenación, protección o aislamiento, como los que encontramos en nuestro entorno cotidiano, provocando el encuentro entre su propio cuerpo y las construcciones que definen nuestros modos de habitar, una relación físicamente mediada que pasa a ser codificada por medio de símbolos.

TIMO HERBST Germany, 1982 Over the last couple of years Timo Herbst’s artistic practice has been evolving around the notion of an anatomy of gestures, or in more general terms, how do embodied movements generate meaning and what are the situations, configurations, that provide the context for those expressions of the body in flux?

En los últimos dos años, la práctica artística de Timo Herbst ha evolucionado en torno a la noción de una anatomía de los gestos o, en términos más generales, ¿cómo generan significado los movimientos corporales y cuáles son las situaciones, las configuraciones, que proporcionan el contexto para esas expresiones del cuerpo fluido?

This research, that applies various media like drawing, performance and video, is analyzing the relations of the human body with its multifaceted zones of interaction: an important reference is the work of the French sociologist Henri Lefebvre and his “Rhythmanalysis“ that Herbst is putting hereby into a larger cultural and anthropological horizon.

Esta investigación, que aplica diversos medios como el dibujo, la performance y el vídeo, analiza las relaciones del cuerpo humano con sus multifacéticas zonas de interacción. Una referencia importante es la obra del sociólogo francés Henri Lefebvre y su “Ritmo-análisis”, que Herbst sitúa en un horizonte cultural y antropológico más amplio.

“Movement“ in any given moment, as in every day life, in private, in public, during work or leisure. He keeps asking, what does it charge the bodily expression with political, intimate, theatrical, communicative energy?

“Movimiento” en cualquier momento, como en la vida cotidiana, en privado, en público, durante el trabajo o el ocio. No deja de preguntarse ¿qué es lo que carga la expresión corporal de energía política, íntima, teatral, comunicativa?

In his studies, and in particular in his drawings, the artist observes bodies in accumulation, in large crowds, as well as individually, taken apart like seen through visual surgery. The fragmented body, becomes a metonymical way of speaking about the isolated parts of a holistic rhetoric of the human being.

En sus estudios, y en particular en sus dibujos, el artista observa los cuerpos agregados en grandes multitudes, así como individualmente, desmontados como si se tratara de una cirugía visual. El cuerpo fragmentado, se convierte en una forma metonímica de hablar de las partes aisladas de una retórica holística del ser humano.

Therefore it is obvious that Herbst developed a particular interest in the motive of the hand, Throughout the evolution of mankind the hand itself has been a medium, not only to hold the tools that build and create, but to be instrumental in itself.

YOSMAN BOTERO Colombia, 1983 The recent drawings of Colombian artist, Yosman Botero from the series A better world in ink and charcoal on paper and canvas, turn our attention back to a certain period of USA history, when, because of the sinister and absurd situation in the cold war, we could witness the rehearsals for doomsday.

Los recientes dibujos del artista colombiano Yosman Botero pertenecientes a la serie Un mundo mejor en tinta y carboncillo sobre papel y lienzo, nos devuelven la atención a un determinado periodo de la historia de EE.UU., cuando debido a la siniestra y absurda situación de la guerra fría, pudimos asistir a los ensayos del día del juicio final.

With Botero, we look at an audience watching the atomic test bombs explode in the desert of Nevada. The disastrous spectacle itself is not shown, it is only a reflection on the protection glasses of the army members sitting in seats that look like taken from a cinema. Botero underlines the creepy and eerie atmosphere of those tests by his way of composition and miseen-scene. Sometimes the figures appear like cut out, disintegrated and isolated or they turn the back to us. In another work, a group of men wearing coats and hats are in a conversation and watching again a scene that we are uncertain about. It could be newspaper photograph or another historical source material, that was used for the drawing, however, something tells us, that the moment is not one of pure leisure or innocent joy, like watching a baseball game. The evocation of a hidden drama lies underneath the surface. Robert Longo’s charcoal drawings come to mind – he actually depicted the horrific atomic mushroom – as well as the work of the Belgian painters Luc Tuymans and Michael Borremans, whose sense of historical and surreal images seems to have invaded Botero’s atmospheric and technically brilliant drawings.

Con Botero, contemplamos a un público que observa la explosión de las bombas atómicas de ensayo en el desierto de Nevada. El desastroso espectáculo en sí no se muestra, sólo es un reflejo en las gafas de protección de los miembros del ejército sentados en asientos que parecen sacados de un cine.

Botero subraya la atmósfera espeluznante e inquietante de esas pruebas por su forma de componer la escena. A veces las figuras aparecen como recortadas, desintegradas y aisladas, o nos dan la espalda. En otra obra, un grupo de hombres con abrigo y sombrero conversan y observan de nuevo una escena que no comprendemos con certeza. Podría tratarse de una fotografía de periódico o de otro material histórico, que se utilizó para el dibujo. Sin embargo, algo nos dice, que el momento no es de puro ocio o alegría inocente, como ver un partido de béisbol. La evocación de un drama oculto se encuentra bajo la superficie. Me vienen a la mente los dibujos a carboncillo de Robert Longo -que en realidad representó el horrible hongo atómico-, así como la obra de los pintores belgas Luc Tuymans y Michael Borremans, cuyo sentido de las imágenes históricas y surrealistas parece haber invadido los atmosféricos y técnicamente brillantes dibujos de Botero.
