COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT

The City of Nacogdoches Community Services Department is made up of 7 divisions.

RECREATION REMINDERS

Please Register Early

We make every effort to conduct the classes we advertise. However, in fairness to our instructors, there is a point when courses must be cancelled due to insufficient registration. With that in mind, please do no wait until the last minute to sign up for a class. You could be the one participant needed to meet the required minimum.

Accident Insurance

The City of Nacogdoches does not provide individual, team, or group accident insurance for participants in Recreation program. We recommend that you check with your personal agent to assure coverage. Please report any injuries to your program supervisor.

Refund Policy

Persons needing to cancel out of a program may request a refund at the Recreation Center prior to the starting date of the program. Refunds will not be issued after the first class meeting or first day of the activity unless a written statement from a physician is received indicating illness or disability.

Unattended Children

No child under the age of 12 should be left unattended at the Recreation Center, unless your child is enrolled in a class where the instructor has assumed responsibility. Children left without adult supervision will be asked to contact their parents for pickup; if necessary, authorities will be notified.

FITNESS FACILITIES

CL Simon Recreation Center Gymnasium

Cost: $2 per day or $20 per month

Ages: 12 years and under must have supervision by an adult 18 years or older. Wednesday nights only permits 18 and up only, including guests and spectators (valid ID required). No exceptions.

Weight Room

Cost: $2 per day or $20 per month

Ages: 18 years and up only

Times: The weight room may be used during the CL Simon Recreation Center open gym hours. Please call or click here to check availability.

Pickleball

Cost: Free at Banita Creek and Maroney Parks. Six courts available at Banita Creek Park’s multi-use court. Bring your own equipment and net. Twelve courts available at Maroney Park. (Indoor Pickleball available during summer season for a fee.)

GYMNASTICS

Mini &Me

Level 1

Gymnastics

Ages: 1-3

Parents/guardians will assist their child in an instructor led class. This is introductory level to learn how to follow guidance from the instructor while working through basic circuit rotations

Tumbling Tumbling

Level 2

Gymnastics

Ages 4-7 OR Ages 7-14

Beginner class for younger or inexperienced children. Focuses on lower leveled skills to improve hand eye coordination, hip/back mobility, flexibility, and strength.

Ages 4-7

Beginner class for students interested in focusing on floor skills, rather than traditional gymnastics.

Tumbling

Ages: 7-14

Advanced class for older students who have mastered Level 1 gymnastic skills. Athletes are expected to follow directions well and be open to challenges.

Ages 7-14

Designed for experienced children interested in higher level floor skills. Athletes are expected to have mastered Level 1 Tumbling, folllow directions well, and be open to challenges.

NINJA

Details and Classes

Ninja 1

Ages 4-7

Learn the basics of becoming a ninja in this beginner introductory class! This is structured to learn the basic knowledge of flips and tricks, as well as obstacle skill development.

Ninja 2

Ages 4-7

Designed for students with a higher skill level for obstacle based curriculum. This class has more challenges and higher advancements with flips and tricks. Students are expected to follow directions well and be open to challenges.

OPENGYMNASTICS

Open gymnastics is a drop-in activity. Children will not be instructed, but can play on the gymnastics equipment. No need to preregister for this activity. Prices are listed below.

Cost: $5/ family

Age: 0-5 years

Monday, Wednesday and Fridays - 10 - 11am

Tumble Tots

Looking for something to do with your active tot? Come let your child explore, climb and crawl in a safe environment while getting some time to socialize with other parents. This open gymnastics time is the perfect place to meet other parents and get your little one’s energy out while improving their overall motor skills. Only children 5 and under may participate in Tumble Tots.

Homeschool

Open Gymnastics

Cost: $5/ family

All school aged children are welcome. Tuesdays - 1-3pm

Bring your homeschooled children for their P.E . time. (We also have open gym basketball, see Recreation Center Gymnasium) No instructor, parents must supervise their children. Click here for gymnastics room rules. Participants can work on skills and let their energy out.

Cost: $5/ child (regardless of age)

Age: 5-12 years.

Open Gymnastics

Two Fridays a month - 4:30-6pm

Bring your kiddos in to let a little energy out in the gymnastics room. No instruction will be given by staff, but participants are allowed to work on skills during this time. Children under the age of 5 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. Click here for the schedule.

Parties are reserved in two hour blocks of time on Saturdays only. Party times include set-up and clean-up.

YOUTH DANCE + TWIRLING

Details and Classes

Registration begins 2 weeks before the start of each session. Class must have 2 participants* Four Week Sessions: $35 | Three Week Sessions: $25

Ballet/ Jazz

Ages: 4-6

Cost: $35/month Wednesdays at 5pm

Dancers will learn basic ballet and jazz techniques, as well as combinations. Ballet or jazz shoes are required.

Jazz

Ages: 7-12

Cost: $35/month Wednesdays at 5pm

This fun and energetic class focuses solely on jazz dance. Dancers will learn foundational jazz techniques and moves, with instruction tailored to each student’s skill level and needs.

Jazz shoes are preferred.

Twirling

Ages: 3-18

Cost: $35/month

Learn fundamentals, tricks, salutes, footwork, kicks, and dance/ novelty twirl routines. Students will need a baton that fits the length of their arm (can be purchased with instructor). Students may have the opportunity to perform at local events throughout the year and compete locally. Any student enrolled in a regular twirling class can add on the trick class for an additional class fee. Multiple ages will be included in the Trick Class as it will offer new tricks and support for existing tricks in one, two, and/or three batons based on the individual needs of each student. Private & Semi-private lessons by appointment.

Younger Beginner Twirling: 5:00-5:45pm (Ages 3-7)

Older Beginner Twirling: 5:45-6:30 pm (Ages 8+)

Trick Class: 6:30-7:15 pm (All Ages)

This class will focus on the basic of Sign Language. Each class will build on the previous class.

Table Tennis

The Nacogdoches Table Tennis Club (NTTC) welcomes all levels of players. NTTC promotes a family friendly atmosphere with serious minded children welcome under adult supervision. Our goals are fun, exercise, and the improvement of table tennis skills. No need to preregister.

Mid Pines Fencing Club meets Saturdays 10:30am

Benning Fencing: Next class September

Discover fencing through games and exercises. Learn the basics of fencing as well as body coordination and control. No experience necessary. All fencing equipment is provided. This is designed as an 8 week course for: Sabre. Wear full legged exercise pants, tennis shoes with laces and bring a water bottle.

MARTIAL ARTS

Judo is a martial art that emphasizes the use of quick movement and leverage to throw an opponent. In addition to the physiological benefits, martial arts also increases self-esteem, and self-defense. Participants will learn Olympic style Judo/Ju-Jitsu.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Learn the art of leverage, control, and ground-based self-defense in our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class. Open to all levels, this class teaches essential BJJ techniques such as positional control, submissions, and escapes. Students will train in both Gi and No-Gi styles, with an emphasis on practical self-defense, respectful sparring, and technical growth. Whether you ' re looking to get in shape, build confidence, or compete, this class offers a supportive environment for personal development and skill-building.

Tai Chi

Balance, tranquility, and strength Yang style 24 form. This class will involve stretching, deep breathing, Lohan patting, tai chi walking, and learning the Yang style 24 form, slow methodic sweeping movements. Wear loose clothing and flat soled shoes. No previous experience is needed.

ADULT SWING DANCE CLASS

This swing dance class is an introduction to the social dance that swept the nation in the 1930’s and is alive and kicking today, focusing mainly on Lindy Hop, Charleston, and solo jazz. Come by yourself, with your friends, or with a partner. We will rotate partners during the class. Class takes place for the first 45 minutes, followed by a social dance so you can put what you learned to practice! Wear comfortable shoes and attire. If you have already attended several beginner swing dance classes and are looking to practice what you already know and maybe experiment with some new things, this is the space for you! This is an unstructured practice session for intermediate dancers, no class is offered during this time. Each month we choose a cookbook and invite the public to come select a recipe from the book to prepare and bring to the gathering.

The programs are provided by the Genealogy Network of Texas (GNT), a state-wide initiative to connect libraries/genealogical societies and provide educational and research opportunities that is spearheaded by the Genealogy Center of the WacoMcLennan County Library. Co-sponsors include the Central Texas Genealogical Society and the Texas State Genealogical Society. Register for one or all the sessions.

The enrollment period for Medicare opens in October. Danielle Sells will explain the various options available for Medicare coverage. This program is ideal for people nearing eligibility age, people currently on Medicare looking to make a change, or their adult children. Light snacks will be served. Feel free to bring your own lunch.

The Sterne-Hoya House Museum and Library is an 1830 dogtrot house built by prominent merchant and Texas Revolution leader, Adolphus Sterne. It was occupied by the Sterne family until 1869 when it was sold to the von der Hoya family. The house remained in the von der Hoya family until it was donated to the City of Nacogdoches in 1958, to be used as a library.

The Durst-Taylor Historic House and Gardens is a circa 1835 wood-frame house and is the second oldest building in Nacogdoches. The house sits very close to the intersection of the old El Camino Real de los Tejas and La Calle del Norte and was home to many early businessmen, bankers, and political leaders including Thomas J. Rusk, Bennett Blake and William Ochiltree. This hands-on museum includes a fully functioning smokehouse, blacksmith shop and chicken coop as well as heirloom gardens and a sugarcane mill.

cogdoches Railroad Depot was built by Southern Pacific Railroad in 1911 e original wooden depot burned to the ground following a lightening This Depot transported goods, passengers and even soldiers from oches to places far and wide before discontinuing passenger service in The Nacogdoches Railroad Depot was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 and is now home to a transportation museum that chronicles the rich history of the railroad and its passengers

l Baptist Church was home to one of the oldest African American Baptist ations in Texas. The congregation was founded in 1878 by Reverend Reed and has occupied four different buildings during its life. Zion Hill social and religious center for members of the Zion Hill community and Americans in Nacogdoches. Zion Hill Baptist Church, which sits on the corner of Lanana and Bois d’arc streets, was built in 1914 by famed architect Diedrich Rulfs.

What is Main Street?

The Nacogdoches Main Street program revitalizes the historic downtown, blending heritage preservation with economic growth. Through events, business support, and beautification, it fosters a vibrant hub for the community and visitors.

Main Street Board

The Nacogdoches Main Street Board is appointed by the city council and advises the Main Street Manager. The board guides efforts to revitalize and promote the downtown area by collaborating with local businesses, residents, and city officials The board plans events, manages revitalization projects, and ensures the program aligns with community needs, while also securing funding and resources to support downtown development and maintain its historic character. The board meets on the third Monday of each month.

Wine Swirl Fundraiser

The Wine Swirl is Main Street’s premier fundraiser for downtown projects. The Wine Swirl offers attendees a chance to sample wines from Texas Wineries, while enjoying live entertainment, local food and plenty of downtown shopping! The funds raised from the Wine Swirl supports Main Street’s Many projects Projects include: Downtown Beautification Grants, Holiday Decorations and other downtown events.
