Community Happenings

Both Splashadoches and Temple Park Splashpad close for the season September 2nd. Splashpad season is from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year.

The 2025 Street Paving Project continued this week with milling of the existing surface on Virginia Avenue and repaving begun. This work will continue next week, weatherpermitting. New asphalt overlays were also completed on Arthur Weaver Street, Fox Street and Brown Street this week. Patching and overlay will begin on Zula Street next week, followed by the other patch and overlay streets mentioned in last week’s update.

Friday Update Convention & Visitor’s Bureau Downtown was buzzing this past weekend with students traveling from campus to shop and dine. SFA Orientation originally planned for two buses from 9am-3pm, but added a 3rd bus due to demand.

Initial feedback from shops and food trucks is very positive.

On Tuesday, Visit Nac Staff had a booth at the Nac in a Nutshell resource fair on the SFA Campus, handing out information about local attractions.

The CVB Board will meet on Monday, September 8th, 2025 at 4:00pm in the Visitor Center Downstairs Basement.

Friday Update Nacogdoches Historic Sites Successful Texas Folklife Concert at Zion Hill This past Thursday and Friday, Nacogdoches Historic Sites hosted Texas Folklife’s event Bridging Borders: Music, Memory & Culture at historic Zion Hill. The program brought together incredible performers and community members to celebrate music, heritage, and storytelling.

We were honored to welcome the renowned artists Jesse Lége & Bosco Stomp and Rockin’ Dopsie Jr. & The Zydeco Twisters.

Also present were Chris Kiley, Executive Director of Texans for the Arts, and Bailey Pownall, Deputy Director of Texans for the Arts.

Our amazing community filled the pews and showed everyone that Nacogdoches is a place where music, history, art, and culture can thrive.

Telling SFA Students about Nac Historic Sites We joined other city staff at Nac in a Nutshell Tuesday and shared a map with students showing them how to get to our four Nacogdoches Historic Sites from campus. Students were excited about exploring downtown and learning that the museums were open and free for the public to enjoy.

Friday Update Nacogdoches Public Library The application to be a vendor, performer, or to build an altar at the Día de los Muertos Festival is now available at https://nacogdoches.form.transform.c ivicplus.com/50321. The festival will be held November 1st at Festival Park from 1:00-5:00pm.

The library will host an unveiling of the books purchased with the Texas Book Festival Grant. The library received $2500 to purchase graphic novels, large print books and nonfiction books. The event is September 12th from 4:30-5:30pm.

The library will resume its Dinner Conversation series starting with a presentation about hospice. A representative from Heart-t0-Heart Hospice will discuss the services that families can receive through hospice.

The program is September 23rd at 5:30pm. The event is free, but registration is requested.

Friday Update Public Works Public Works crews are currently clearing the brush routes in zone 11 and zone 14.

Citizens can still haul their brush and bagged lawn debris for unlimited free dumps to the City Landfill located at 4602 N.W. Stallings Dr., with their City of Nacogdoches issued water bill and ID/DL showing proof of residence.

Brush & Yard Waste Pickup • Tree limbs and brush shall be stacked on street right-of-ways, or within 3 to 6 feet of the curb or street. o Stacks shall not exceed 6'L X 4'W X 4'H and be limited to three piles. o The maximum diameter of the largest limb shall not exceed 12 inches in diameter. o Brush must be stacked in front of the residence that generated the brush. o Brush placed on vacant lots or in the streets will not be picked up. o Limbs should not extend into the roadway.

Bagged yard waste o Bagged yard waste collection is "ONLY" available for residential addresses. o Bagged yard waste shall be placed within ten feet of the edge of the roadway for collection.

Yard waste must be properly bagged. o The city will only collect 20 bags per residence per week. o Bagged Yard Waste may also be disposed of at the City landfill, for no charge, provided that the: -Resident provide current copy of water bill & drivers license as proof of residence.

City of Nacogdoches Staff Take Part in Nac in a Nutshell Event City staff attended last night's Nac in a Nutshell event on the campus of SFA. The event was cohosted by SFA and the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce and provided an opportunity for SFA students to familiarize themselves with local businesses and organizations. Our staff relished the opportunity to discuss programming and attractions around Texas' oldest town.

Also beginning next week, the western section of Oakview Drive will be milled ahead of a new asphalt surface. The intersection of Oakview Drive and Northway Drive will be torn out and new concrete installed and will be followed by an asphalt overlay of the eastern section of Oakview in the coming weeks.

During this construction and cure time, businesses and residents west of this intersection will need to access their residences via North Street. Those east of this intersection will utilize Meadowview Drive for access.

Recreation Department Today is the last Flashback Fitness class, Adult P.E. starting at 5:30pm. This class is free, just register. Don’t forget to “dress out” for those wanting to really get into the theme.

Fall classes begin next week. We have some new classes such as Brazilian JiuJitsu and Urban Step. We will now be offering adult open gymnastics (13+) on the opposite Fridays of youth open gymnastics (5-12). Beginner Fencing class starts again next week. Girls youth volleyball practices will begin September 9th.

Fall adult coed soccer is open for registration. Registration ends Sunday September 7th. Coed 30+ teams can register here.
