Remembrance Sunday this year marks one hundred years since the end of World War One. There will be commemorations across the city and in local villages. At the church in St John's, research into the names on the war memorial has revealed the stories of some of the local men who died.

You can read more on Page 14.

Elsewhere, the giraffes that stood around the city centre during the summer will be herded together for an exhibition taking place in the cathedral at the start of October, before they are auctioned off. The money raised will be used to help fund new facilities at St Richard’s Hospice, see Page 22.

Enjoy Local 1. bonfire and fireworks event The annual bonfire and fireworks event on Pitchcroft returns this year on Saturday 3rd November. Organised by Worcester Roundtable, the event begins at 5.30pm with a funfair, food stalls and other attractions to enjoy. The bonfire is due to be lit at 6.15pm before the fireworks displays from 7.30pm. Every year thousands of pounds are raised which is donated to local good causes, including New Hope, West Mercia Search & Rescue, New College Worcester and Fort Royal School. 3. autumn into winter John Massey comes to Powick in October to deliver a special talk to the Black Pear Gardening Club.

John, who’s a nursery owner and Chelsea gold medal winner, will be giving a talk entitled ‘Autumn into Winter’ on Saturday 20th October, starting 2.30pm at Powick Parish Hall. Tickets are £3 for non-members (£1.50 for members) which include refreshment. 4. lights switch on & victorian christmas fayre Worcester gears up for Christmas with two of its most popular events in the city centre this November.

The Victorian Christmas Fayre runs from Thursday 29th November to Sunday 2nd December when the city centre will be filled with more than 200 stalls. There will also be music and street entertainers through the weekend.

5. hardy plants society talks The Hardy Plant Society Worcestershire Group has two talks coming up this autumn. ringing out for peace On Sunday 11th November, the centenary of the end of World War One will be remembered. Nationally, bell towers will ring out at 7.05pm to celebrate peace and among those taking part is the church of St John in Bedwardine.

The war memorial outside the church has the names of 104 local men who lost their lives in the First World War. Two members of the church have been involved in tracing the stories of those names and it makes sad reading.

Ernest Insley was a private in the Eastern Ontario Regiment, who married a Canadian but whose parents lived in Vernon Park in St Johns. On 9th April 1917 he was wounded in action and died later that day. A fortnight later, on 24th April, his father died when the hospital ship bringing him home was torpedoed. It’s impossible to imagine what Edith, mother and wife to these men, must have felt.

As part of the national commemorations, but also to remember the local men who died, the church will be taking part in ‘Ringing Out for Peace’ on Sunday 11th November. The church will be open from 5.30pm so people have a chance to view displays about the war and the names on the memorial. There will be floral arrangements, a display of poppies and there will also be refreshments on offer.

At 6.45pm the Reverend Sarah Cottrill will give a short reading before the last post is played by a group of buglers from the First Malvern Company of The Boys’ Brigade and 7th Malvern Company The Girls Brigade. A small beacon will be lit in the church grounds at 7pm before the bells ring out in the tower, as part of Ringing Out for Peace.

Nationally, at least a thousand churches are expected to take part.

One man comes to the Remembrance service at the church every year. His uncle, Charles Jones grew up in Worcester and died while serving in 1917. The church would be interested to hear if anybody else has relatives who are named on

Works by Mark Titchner and the Turner Prize-winning artist Gillian Wearing form part of an exhibition at Worcester City Art Gallery this autumn. What Do We Want? explores ordinary people’s voices against a world of corporate and political messages.

Wearing and Titchner are known for their work which blurs the lines between public identities, commercial consumption, and private lives.

They provide powerful commentary on everyday perceptions of who we think we are and what we want, explored through forms of expression associated with personal and political language.

The exhibition is complemented by streetlevel works of art, created by Mark Titchner in collaboration with Worcester residents, including people from the city’s homeless community. The street-level campaign will transform the exhibition into a city-wide project, widening the reach of the exhibition and the impact of its themes and their relevance. Following the exhibition, the new artwork will join Worcester’s collection.

What Do We Want? also features works from the city’s own collection of satirical and political prints as well as works on loan from the Arts Council Collection. It has been funded by the Weston Loan Programme with Art Fund. The Loan Programme was created by the Garfield Weston Foundation and is the first ever UK-wide funding scheme enabling smaller and local authority museums to borrow works of art and artefacts from the national collections. The Art Fund is a national charity distributing money to help museums and galleries acquire works of art.

Local Event

farewell to the giraffes Throughout the past summer, Worcester City Centre has been populated by a brightlydecorated herd of giraffe sculptures!

The sculpture trail was brought to the city by St Richard’s Hospice and brought to life by Wild in Art, a producer of public art events which created similar projects around the world including trails for the 2012 Olympics and the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The sculptures are now gathered together for a final farewell event which takes place in the Chapter House of Worcester Cathedral between Thursday 4th and Sunday 7th October.

It will be the last chance to see all the giant giraffes before they are auctioned to raise money for the St Richard’s Hospice Build 2020 Appeal.

The rose-gold calf sculpture displayed outside the cathedral, Lily the Pink, will also be auctioned, while the remaining calves will be returned to the schools and groups which decorated them.

‘The joy on the faces of families, and especially of young children greeting, stroking and even kissing Lily the Pink on the nose, as they have followed the trail of giraffes through the city to the Cathedral has been a real delight to behold’ according to Canon Dr Alvyn Pettersen from the cathedral. ‘Turning the Cathedral’s Chapter House into a ‘Giraffe House’ which will rival that in any zoo will be very exciting. We invite everyone to join us in hosting all the giraffes, collected together in the Cathedral’s round Chapter House.'

Tickets are now available for the Farewell Event and you can book a one-hour slot to see the giraffes.

WELLBEING IN AUTUMN Worcester has disappeared into the mist that is sitting in the Severn Valley. The garden is damp from a wave of rain that passed over the hills. Soon, the sun will dip under the horizon and the dark night will come.

I’m writing this in early September, and it’s not quite evening. The days have been getting noticeably shorter recently, and I am reminded of winter days in my youth when I would walk to work in the dark, walk home in the dark and spend the day longing for natural light rather than the fluorescent glow of the department store I was working in.

As summer draws to a close I also find myself remembering those first days of sunshine this year, after the long snowy winter. The sprits of the whole town seemed to lift when the bright weather arrived.

What can we do to stay happy as the hours of light become less, the temperature cools, and the clouds roll in?

Hygge Lots of you will have heard of Hygge. Pronounced Hue-guh, this is a Danish word that means something like cosiness. When interviewed by the BBC, Susanne Nilson said, “Hygge could be families and friends getting together for a meal, with the lighting dimmed, or it could be time spent on your own reading a good book.”

Maybe we can think of Hygge as creating conditions that help us to relax: Lighting candles, or sitting around a fire (inside or outside), creating a winter evening playlist that slowly gets more and more chilled, or sharing a good meal with friends.

Getting outside As Arthur Wainwright famously said, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.” Getting outside means getting vitamin D. It means moving the body, and it means you’re more likely to look at trees. All of these things are really good for you. In cold damp weather I often feel reluctant to go up onto the hills, but every time I do I feel better afterwards.

Eating well This summer I’ve been enjoying lots of wonderful salads and Buddha bowls for lunch. Our veg patch needed plenty of watering but the results

Sometimes – particularly when I’m on my own – cooking can seem like a chore. But when I eat good food I always feel better.

Community of Christmas Concert Maybe itMagic feels easier to meet people when the weather is good, and easier to stay at home on your own on cold dark nights. But we are social beings. We each like different amounts of company, but some company is good for the soul, so host a dinner party, meet a friend for a coffee, or join a book club.

Plan something you enjoy If the thought of a long dark winter really does lower your mood then make sure you plan some bright spots. Make a date with yourself, or a friend, and put it in your diary. Having something to look forward to in the future can make you feel better right now.

As the weather changes, and the light changes, it can be easy to fall into wishing for the autumn and winter to already be over. All of the suggestions I’ve made today are based on accepting the reality of what is, and finding ways of appreciating and making the most of what is happening right now.

Whether you are a cold weather person or a hot weather person, I hope you have an easy and enjoyable autumn.

Slow Roast Pork Shoulder from Meg at Roots Family Farm Shop Pork from a traditional breed of pig, raised in an extensive organic farming system, carefully prepared buy a good butcher, will have perfect layers of intermuscular and intramuscular fat to ensure tender, melt-in-the-mouth meat when cooked long and slow.

A larger joint is better suited to this style of cooking, but that shouldn’t put off the smaller family, because two meals can easily be prepared from one roast.

Enjoy the comforting bowl of tender meat, mash and greens and then the leftovers will make great sandwiches or can be stuffed into buns or flatbreads with spicy sauces and crunchy leaves.

Ingredients 2kg Organic Pork Shoulder Herbs (Rosemary, Sage) Sea Salt and Freshly Ground Pepper Pre-heat the oven to 180ºC. Rub the joint all over with seasoning and place in a deep roasting tray.

Lay the herbs on top and add a mug of water to the tray. Cover tightly with good quality tin foil, a double layer if the foil is thin.

Put the tray in the hot oven for twenty minutes, then turn the temperature down to low, 100ºC and leave to cook gently for at least 6 hours, I have an electric oven and often leave the joint for 12 hours overnight. Allow to cool sitting in the cooking juices.

To serve, gently warm the joint in the oven again (sitting in the cooking juices) then using two forks, pull apart the meat which will be very soft and easy to shred. The cooking juices will make wonderful gravy (although you may need to pour off some of the separated fat).

Serve on hot, buttery mashed potato with braised greens and gravy.

Helping both men and women deal with the trauma of a relationship that has irretrievably broken down.

By Malvern Branch Co-ordinator: Gill Owen I got involved with Divorce Recovery Workshop (DRW) 7 years ago when a friend who had been on the course found it so inspirational she wanted to set up a local branch in Malvern, which is the only branch in Worcestershire.

The workshops are run by experienced volunteers who have all been through the breakdown of a long term relationship and attended the workshops. Although my own divorce was a long time ago, I had to attend the workshops before becoming a facilitator.

I was amazed to discover just how many emotions I had buried. Once I had completed the workshop I knew I had come to terms with my past and could let it go. When you go through a breakup you don’t always realise how much grief, resentment and anger you hold on to or how emotionally and physically exhausting it can be.

How can Divorce Recovery Workshop help?

The breakdown of a long term relationship is a form of bereavement; yet unlike the death of a partner, you are often expected to carry on as normal. Whilst friends and family can be supportive, they don’t always understand how you feel and even your best friend will eventually have had enough of you going over and over what has happened!

Anyone who has been through the heartache of an irretrievable breakup is welcome at DRW, even if you are going through the divorce or if it was years ago. DRW will help

you cope with the many different emotions: shock, disbelief, rejection, anger, bitterness and guilt. You will gain a better understanding of what you are going through and be offered strategies to help you cope.

What actually happens at a workshop?

The course consists of six sessions covering: • Is this really happening to me?

• Coping with your 'Ex' • Assuming new responsibilities • Letting go and forgiveness • Family matters • Thinking about new relationships Participants watch a DVD on each topic and then divide into small groups with 2 facilitators per group. Everything said in the group is strictly confidential and no one is pressured to talk if they don’t want to.

When is the next one taking place?

The next DRW course will run on 3 Saturdays, fortnightly, on 13th and 27th October and 10th November 2018: 2 sessions per day with lunch in between.

Is there a charge for the Workshop and where does it take place?

DRW is a non-profit making registered charity but to cover our running costs we ask participants to pay £60 for the entire course.

The venue is in Churchdown Road, Malvern and there is a free car park.

still alice Michael Park is delighted to announce that following a hugely successful three-week run at West Yorkshire Playhouse earlier this year, Christine Mary Dunford’s newly adapted version of Lisa Genova’s best-selling novel, STILL ALICE, comes to Malvern Theatres this November, directed by David Grindley and starring Sharon Small as Alice.

STILL ALICE follows 50 year-old Alice Howland, a renowned linguistics professor at Harvard University, as she battles with early-onset dementia and explores the effects the disease has on identity, family and relationships in this uncompromising yet tender portrayal. In 2014, Genova’s novel was adapted into a film starring Julianne Moore and Alec Baldwin, for which Moore won the Academy, BAFTA, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Critics’ Choice Movie Awards for Best Actress.

Television and stage star, Sharon Small, reprises the role of Alice, her first UK tour in almost twenty-five years, having played it at West Yorkshire Playhouse earlier this year.

She is best known for playing Barbara Havers in The Inspector Linley Mysteries (BBC One), Trudi Malloy in Mistresses (BBC One), Christine opposite Hugh Grant, Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette in the film adaptation of About A Boy, and most recently as Brigitte Rayne in Trust Me opposite Jodie Whittaker (BBC One). Her vast array of stage work includes Simon Stephens’s adaptation of The Threepenny Opera at the National Theatre, and When Harry Met Sally at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.

Still Alice will be at Malvern Theatres from Tuesday 20th to Saturday 24th November.
