Umbilical cord:
The umbilical cord is the connecting channel between dam and fetus in prenatal life. The role of the umbilical cord finished after birth. The umbilical cord usually spontaneously severed after birth as a result of standing of the dam after birth. The umbilical cord did not be cute; it should be severed after 5 to 8 mins from birth to give a sufficient time for passage of blood from the dam to the foal to prevent the occurrence of anemia for the foal. The umbilical cord should be cute 5 cm from the body followed by disinfection using chlorhexidine 0.5% or povidone iodine 1% or tincture iodine 2%.
Nursing and ingestion of colostrum are critical to the well-being of a newborn foal. The farm personnel should observe the foal to determine if it has stood and nursed on its own or if assistance is required. The vast majority of foals will stand and nurse unassisted within the first 1–2 hours after being born. A few foals will stand unassisted, but may need some guidance to find the udder. Observing dried milk on the face and nose of the foal and a full, tight udder on the mare suggests that the foal is not nursing effectively or maybe not at all.Since mares have epitheliochorial placentation, newborn foals are entirely dependent on the passive transfer of maternal antibodies absorbed following ingestion of mare colostrum in the first few hours of life for protection against infectious diseases. Absorption of antibodies is greatest during the first 6–8 hours after birth, subsequently decreases and stops completely by approximately 24 hours of age. If the colostrum of a postpartum mare is tested and determined to be of marginal or poor quality it would be beneficial to supplement the foal with frozen-thawed colostrum from a colostrum bank. It is noteworthy that, foal should be fed 1.5 to 2 liters of colostrum in the first 6 hours from birth.
