When many people think of the word business, they tend to conjure images of the corporate world with stern CEO’s, bustling board rooms and bottom lines. A very serious, impersonal world some might interpret as selfish or greedy.
This month we explore a very different side to the business world and one that might even be considered the opposite.
I have the pleasure of sitting down and getting to know a person who’s title could seem boring or bureaucratic to some, but the person behind the desk is anything.
Introducing Sotera Trevaskis, Director of Regional Development at Regional Development Australia Wide Bay Burnett (RDAWBB) a regional economic development organisation that covers the regions of Fraser coast, Bundaberg, North and South Burnett, Cherbourg and Gympie.
We take a seat on the balcony, enjoying the mild winter’s afternoon as she begins to explain to me her role on paper, using a lot of official government jargon. Most of it went over my head but I’m certain she knows what she’s talking about.
“God, it sounds really wanky” she reflects, seemingly catching herself saying it out loud for the first time. “My job sounds really boring but I enjoy it.” She delivers it dryly but I get the subtext and a pleasant hint towards her character.
I learned a little about her nature and her proclivity to say what she’s thinking, how she’s thinking it at the same time remaining completely professional. Quite the art form I must admit.
As she broke it down for me, it made a lot more sense. Behind the shroud of fancy terms I learn that in essence, Sotera is in the people business. The business of people and their businesses.
Sotera is like a two-way conduit between the region and the Australian Government. She refers to RDAWBB as the eyes and ears of the region, feeding back local issues and opportunities while simultaneously connecting businesses and community organisations to funding programs and government support.
Essentially she connects with local people and business to better understand what they need and works to move the region forward across the areas of people, services, places, local industries and economies. “We’ll meet with people, community organisations or businesses to find out what they do and how we can help out.
At one point she mentions a certain sector that is currently receiving “a bucket load of funding” and I laugh at the contrast of proper lingo and the slang that makes her unique.
I’m fascinated by the juxtaposition such a highly qualified person with such a sense of humour and humility. I love that she doesn’t take herself too seriously and catches herself when she walks too close to the line.
That’s not to say she doesn’t take her work seriously— in fact it’s the opposite. She is deeply passionate about her work and it shows with the way she speaks. To take it a step further, she’s a deeply passionate person, period, who cares deeply about her people.
“Yeah I like the diversity— it suits my ADHD brain,” she remarks dryly going on to explain what she enjoys the most about her job.
Her strong moral compass is what lead her to her current role. Up until late 2021 she was working for Queensland Health and decidedly happy with her role. Once the mandates (enforced by her department) took place and essentially removed bodily autonomy from anyone wanting to remain employed, she took a stand.
“Putting pressure on people to take a medication or a drug or whatever you want to call it, and using it to leverage their income was pretty piss poor.”
Again I have a chuckle at her language here. I feel her passion as she gives fierce, lioness energy.
“Shame on them for imposing that on people. It made me so angry.” She goes on to tell me that she was actually forced to work from home when her position was made clear and was not going to change. A credit to the department, she was not fired, however realising a distinct mismatch in alignment, she promptly left of her own volition.
During that time she also wrote a lot of letters to government members and attended rallies to show her support for those affected by the absurd new impositions.
Seeing the systemic flaws from the inside she tells how she lost a lot of faith and indeed respect for the government (Australian and international) in that phase of history, asking, “why don’t we focus on nutrition, sleep, exercise or even sunshine?” We discuss the benefits of prevention being better than cure in the sense of boosting immune systems and creating healthy habits instead.
“Where are the leaders when you need them? I’m here to step up and speak on their behalf— that’s what good leadership is.” Sotera is speaking of not just her own family but also her colleagues and here.
I see clearly that this attitude is reflected in her work with the clients she represents also. She tells me she has no problem standing up to government and telling them what needs to happen for our region and the businesses and organisations within it.
Discovering how much we shared in common the latter part of our meeting felt more like a catch up between old friends. At one point I lost track of who was interviewing who as she asked tons of questions to really understand who I am.
I notice how present she is as we connect. I notice the eye contact and active listening. She asks thoughtful, expansive questions.
Where are the leaders when you need them? I’m here to step up and speak on their behalf— that’s what good leadership is.”
As I’m explaining my passion for drones and the work I do with them, I see dots connect in her brain and she tells me of another contact she has in that space. “Can I introduce you to him?” A natural born networker with a kind, solution first attitude.
A loving wife and mother of three, Sotera gets emotional and sheds a tear as her daughter bids farewell on her way back to Brisbane part way through our meeting.
I see another layer of depth and compassion in our strong, passionate, caring, hilarious protagonist. I’m actually really grateful that she’s on our side!
She really embodies the human element of business and continue to prove that people matter. She is a champion of our region and a living example of local business being greater than the sum of its parts.
In Wide Bay and surrounds, we do business person to person, with a smile, to benefit the whole region.

LIZZIE LEARNS
by Lizzie Macaulay
LIZZIE LEARNS TO... APPRECIATE THE ART OF THE PERFECT PASTRY
There are some businesses that become so woven into the fabric of your family life that you can’t imagine existing without them.
For the Macaulay household (AKA mine…), Pie and Pastry Paradise is absolutely one of those places.
Since my girls were tiny, we’ve been regulars at their various locations across the Fraser Coast.
I’ve lost count of the times I’ve watched their little faces light up as a perfectly formed gingerbread man emerged from those familiar paper bags.
We’ve packed their treats for countless picnics, made them an essential part of our family tradition simply known as ‘Treat Friday’, and I’ll confess to the very occasional indulgent lunch where I’ll duck in to grab a sausage roll to take down to the beach between client meetings.
Suffice to say, we are thoroughly embedded in the world of Pie and Pastry Paradise.
So when I discovered I’d be heading behind the scenes at their main headquarters on Elizabeth Street in Urangan, it’s safe to say I was thrilled.
And yes, my family was more than a little jealous that it was me and not them getting a ticket to pastry-based wonderland.
What began as just Jodie and Nic Berkhout working out of premises on Hillyard Street more than 20 years ago has blossomed into a thriving three-location business that’s become a genuine favourite for visitors and locals alike.
Whether it’s the Main Street location bustling with cyclists, young families, business people and tradies, or their newest spot on Old Maryborough Road, they’ve created spaces that work perfectly for everything from business meetings to family outings to that quick lunch on the go.
But it’s their Urangan location where the magic really happens – the main kitchen where all those delicious treats come to life.
Arriving at the bakery, I was immediately struck by the bustling hive of activity.
There was a steady stream of customers flowing through the front, but once owner Jodie brought me through to the back for the grand tour, I discovered an entirely different type of bustle.
The team moved together in a way that was genuinely mesmerising to watch.
Each person knew exactly where they needed to be and was completely focused on the task at hand,
yet somehow remained subconsciously aware of everyone else around them.
It was like watching a finely tuned machine in action – precise, purposeful, and working toward their shared goal of producing the day’s goodies.
I had the absolute pleasure of spending time with pastry chef Lucia, who was working on pastry for danishes – getting that all-important ‘lamination’ process just right.
(**To note… My girls and I have been catching up on old episodes of The Great British Bake Off recently, and lamination has strangely been a prominent word floating around my mind as a result - how fitting that today was the day I saw ‘lamination’ in action!)
Lucia, who’s originally from Italy with nearly a decade’s experience specialising in sweets, showed me how pastry gets made at an industrial scale. And no, it doesn’t get bought in frozen squares from the supermarket like it does at the Macaulay household.
The science behind keeping the dough happy and at the correct temperature was absolutely fascinating. Lucia explained the delicate balance required – too warm and the butter melts into the dough, too cold and it becomes impossible to work with.
Watching her expertly manage these variables while creating layer upon layer of buttery perfection was like witnessing artistry in motion. The machinery required to produce what they needed at scale was equally captivating.
As I watched these impressive pieces of equipment work their magic, I couldn’t help but wishfully imagine having some of it for myself around the house.
The industrial kitchen itself was spotless, orderly and – perhaps surprisingly – quite soothing. Everything and everyone had its place, and it all just ‘fit together’ beautifully.
I don’t know what it’s like for you, but for me, there’s something deeply satisfying about witnessing a workspace that functions with such harmony and purpose.
As Jodie filled me in on the ins and outs of the business, I was struck by the thought and care that goes into every aspect of their operation.
They’re hugely conscious of wastage and do everything in their power to avoid it – experience has taught them valuable lessons about managing supply and demand across their three locations.
What really resonated with me was learning that Nic is a fourth-generation baker.
This isn’t just a business – it’s a true family legacy.
Their own children have all been involved in various aspects of the operation over the years and - just maybe - there is a beautiful possibility
of this tradition continuing to a fifth and one day even a sixth generation.
Cut back to Lucia, who by now had magically materialised gingerbread dough out of thin air and was cutting my kids’ favourite treats out by the trayload.
What an absolute privilege it was to pop the finishing touches on these little masterpieces: those colourful classics… the humble Smartie.
As I carefully placed each coloured ‘button’ onto the gingerbread figures, I couldn’t help but imagine someone else’s little one pressing their face against the display cabinet glass and pointing excitedly, “I want that one!”
It was a moment that perfectly captured the joy these simple treats bring to families just like mine.
As our conversation continued, I was fascinated to learn more about how technology impacts their decision-making processes, and how Jodie and Nic’s roles have evolved over the years.
They’ve transitioned from being hands-on bakers to managing all the moving parts of such a growing, thriving business – now home to 42 staff members, from bakers to drivers to the smiling faces you see behind the counters.
At the very last moment, I was lucky enough to get a rare minute (and a photo) with the team who were in-store that day.
Even luckier for me, Joy had specifically requested that their signature jalapeño pie be part of the shot.
This became my lunch and was, very genuinely, the perfect end to an extremely happy day.
As I sat there savouring that unexpected treat, I reflected on what I’d witnessed.
Behind every perfectly flaky pastry, every lovingly crafted gingerbread figure, every sausage roll that makes a beach lunch feel special, there’s a dedicated team of people who genuinely care about their craft.
While I may not be ready to open my own bakery empire just yet (I think may be a community service to stick to words rather than embark on a new life as a pastry afficionado), I gained something perhaps more valuable – a deeper appreciation for the skilled hands and passionate hearts that create these little baked moments of joy my family treasures so dearly.
And in a world that often moves too quickly, there’s something deeply reassuring about knowing that places like Pie and Pastry Paradise exist – where tradition, skill, and genuine care for the community come together in the most delicious way possible.
With heartfelt gratitude to Jodie, Nic, and the entire team at Pie and Pastry Paradise for sharing their world with me. You can find them at three locations across the Fraser Coast: Elizabeth Street Urangan, Main Street Pialba, and Old Maryborough Road, Pialba, or visit pieandpastryparadise.com.au for more info!

AUTHENTICALLY ELLA
Local educator and businesswoman Michelle Hadfield, together with daughter Gabbi, has become widely known for their unique ability to combine striking aesthetics and quality materials into unique, ‘must-have’ products and accessories that can’t be found on Temu or Alibaba.
Named after her daughter Gabriella’s childhood nickname ‘Ella,’ ‘Authentically Ella’ has become increasingly recognised as supplying an everincreasing range of unique high quality designer accessories from key fobs and lanyards to high end customised bags, mugs, drink bottles and even notebooks - to a growing market Australia wide.
The business began at the time that Gabriella, also known as ‘Gabbi’ was continuously struggling with health concerns and anxiety arising from the stress of living with undiagnosed Autism. From the beginning, it was intended to be a way to create a space where Gabbi could participate, thrive, and explore her creativity on her own terms.
“She was at Uni studying criminology, she’s always been passionate issues of justice and fairness, but she
was also missing deadlines and feeling really depressed and down, feeling like a burden to herself and others. It wasn’t until she was finally diagnosed as being neurodivergent by way of her Autism, that things finally began to make sense and we had our breakthrough.”
Reflecting on this difficult time, Michelle is philosophical on the many challenges that she and husband Tim faced in the process of supporting Gabbi.
“I always knew that she could be able to do things when she was well enough, but when she wasn’t well, I found that I was getting frustrated at the lack of resources available for neurodivergent kids. The few resources that were available were just ‘one size fits all,’ so I began creating resources to suit individual students as part of my work in Inclusive Education.
Recognising her own need to explore an outlet for her growing passion for designing and creating ‘objet d’art’, it was around this time Michelle saw a niche in the market for fashionable lanyards and started exploring both the design and manufacturing side of online marketing and business platforms.
Inspired by the story of a man who started a sock
business for his son with Down’s Syndrome, and with loving support from Tim, she realised that she could combine her flair for innovation along with her desire to kickstart an endeavour that she could share with her daughter, allowing Gabbi to express her own creativity in a relaxed place without the pressure of deadlines and the fear of letting others down.
Over time, what began as a small mother-daughter project evolved into a successful niche business offering with an ever-increasing demand for the original range of products it espouses. True to its core values, Authentically Ella remains a partnership built on shared values: creativity, advocacy, and the belief that everyone deserves the chance to shine, not just despite their differences, but often because of them.
For her part, Gabbi has made it clear that both she and her mother want their endeavours to be an authentic way of reaching out to other neurodivergent children, in keeping with both Michelle’s work in education and her own experiences. This has become the ethos which has underpinned the direction of the business since its early beginnings -making resources for students and other teachers.
Her passion and focus are clear as she asserts, “It was never about seeing my neurodivergence as something to be hidden. We needed an environment where it wasn’t something that limited me, but actually became part of what made the business work — a place where having variable health didn’t matter and thinking differently wasn’t just accepted but valued.”
This philosophy naturally led to the creation of The Uniquely You Project — a new initiative that invites neurodivergent teens to design products, with the freedom to create in a relaxed, supportive space. Their
designs are featured on Authentically Ella’s online shopfront for a month, with all profits going directly back to the young designer.
“We don’t just want to raise awareness of neurodiversity,” says Gabbi. “We want to celebrate all the ways people can be different. Some of our young collaborators choose to use this platform to speak about their neurodivergence, while others share designs that reflect completely different parts of who they are. It’s about letting them decide what story they want to tell.”
At Authentically Ella, labels and diagnoses aren’t the focus — what matters is recognising each person’s unique strengths and creating an environment where they can be the best version of themselves. Whether that means starting the day with three coffees, dancing for a minute between tasks, or even hugging a giant ‘squishmallow’ while in a meeting — it’s all just people doing what they need to do to thrive.
Michelle couldn’t agree more.
“By introducing people to a wide range of skills including photography, internet marketing and an understanding of the manufacturing processes involved in everything from mugs, drink bottles, stationery, and fridge magnets, we can help them to develop the confidence to one day follow their dreams. Our customers aren’t just customers,” Michelle explains. “Each person we create for has a story, and we get to become part of that story. What a privilege.”
1. What is the story behind the name “Sagnar”?
Sagnar started with twin Brothers, Max and Roman, officially in 2023. They started out with Open Mics, Battle of the Bands, as well as Hervey Bay Unplugged. Kye joined as the bassist in Nov 2024.
Our name came about as the brothers became victims to name calling at school for having red hair. So we decided to turn a negative into a positive. Sagnar is ‘rangas’ spelled backwards. Later on, we found out it also means ‘to draw blood’, which is kind of cool as well.
2. What is it about music that makes you feel passionate?
We love meeting new people when we play at awesome venues and new places. Playing awesome music for circle pits and being creative with our talent. Keeping punk music and music alive in general and for generations to come.
3. Who’s your dream musician to collaborate with and why?
There are So many bands we love. Including Frenzal Rhomb, Bring Nofx Out of Retirement, Pennywise, Millencolin, Fake News and Dead Heat.
4. Do you write your own music? Where can we find your music?
Yes we most definitely do write our own music. Currently we have a song ‘Encore’ released. With another to be released soon. We will be back in the studio to record some more, with a goal to release our first EP by the end of the year. You can find our music on Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music and Youtube. You can also follow us on all the socials like Facebook and Instagram. Don’t forget to check out the venue near you.

SOCIAL BOX GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY
In a world where life can get incredibly busy, and unfortunately, where many face the challenge of putting food on the table, a simple, wholesome meal can make all the difference. Recent reports from Foodbank paint a clear picture: too many low-income households in Australia are struggling with food insecurity, facing the toughest times since the cost-of-living crisis began.
Right here in our own backyard, Hervey Bay, Sneha and Shami saw this challenge and recognized a heartfelt opportunity. In 2023, by using the kitchen of their own cafe, they launched Social Box. Their idea was simple yet powerful: to provide high-quality, FRESH meals to those who found it difficult to cook for themselves, especially our beloved elderly and people with disabilities. They understood that programs like the Home Care Package, NDIS and CHSP could help bridge the gap, making these essential meals accessible.
Our Passion: Fresh Food, Local Heart, Growing Impact
Social Box isn’t just a meal delivery service; it’s a mission born from a deep passion for fresh food and supporting our local community. We truly believe that healthy eating should be easy and accessible for everyone. That’s why we focus on delivering NOT FROZEN, delicious, fresh meals directly to your doorstep. While our meals arrive fresh and ready to enjoy, many of them can be frozen if that’s what works best for your schedule, offering you flexibility without compromising on quality. We started as a small husband-and-wife team, pouring our hearts into every dish. It’s incredibly humbling to share that we’ve grown from just two people to a dedicated team of 10 wonderful staff, all working from our Hervey Bay kitchen. We proudly serve clients across Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Bundaberg, and all the lovely small towns in between, including
those on NDIS, Home Care Packages (HCP), and Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP).
Our chefs are always busy creating a variety of dishes to delight your taste buds. We currently offer 36 unique menu items, and we’re excited to release 10 brand new options on the first week of August!
More Than Just Meals: Giving Back and Looking Ahead
At Social Box, our commitment goes beyond just providing fresh food. We are driven by a genuine desire to make a positive impact right here in Hervey Bay. We believe in strengthening our community, which is why we source our ingredients from local businesses. It’s about supporting our neighbours and keeping our local economy strong.
What truly warms our hearts is being able to share. It’s quite common for us to have a few extra meals after our preparation process. In these situations, we choose not to take extra profit, but to gift these meals to those in need. This often means providing nourishing food to the homeless, the disadvantaged, or even those who are doing it tough. It’s a small way
we can give back and truly make a difference where it matters most.
For us, Social Box is about so much more than just a business. There’s a deep joy in knowing we’re making a real difference in someone’s day, especially for those who need a little extra support. We truly believe that when you pour good into the world, it comes back to you, and that positive energy fuels our growth. It’s a bit like good Karma guiding our way.
Looking to the future, we’re excited about growing our impact even further. We’re planning to diversify into two more sectors in the near future, expanding how we can serve our community. We’re also passionately working towards establishing a charity wing solely focused on supporting the homeless, aiming to provide consistent, nutritious meals to those facing the toughest circumstances. When you choose Social Box, you’re not just choosing a convenient and delicious meal. You’re supporting a local family business that genuinely cares about the well-being of our community, one wholesome, fresh meal at a time.

SMALL BUSINESS ENTREPRENEURS
In Australia, a small business is generally defined as having fewer than 20 employees and/or an aggregated turnover of less than $10 million. These businesses are crucial to the Australian economy, representing the vast majority (98%) of all businesses and contributing significantly to GDP and employment. Several businesses have been identified as strong small business opportunities in Australia for 2025. These include online retail, digital marketing for small businesses, and services like pet care, cleaning, and catering. Other viable options include IT consulting, businesses supporting the NDIS, and online coaching or consulting.
However, the attrition rate suggests the risk factor is quite high, with estimates suggesting that 20% of new small businesses fail within their first year and up to 60% don’t survive beyond five years. This means a significant number of businesses are closing down.
Reasons for this vary, but one valuable piece of advice for budding entrepreneurs is to develop in an area where they have expertise: if money invested versus experience, experience will invariably be the winner. That means, try to work in the industry you wish to pursue before putting your cash, or loan finance into it.
Finding a niche in the fashion industry can be rewarding; along the way, you can realise your potential by gaining the necessary skills to increase your sales, remembering the basic premise that people only buy from people they like!
So this month, dressing for success is reflected in the gorgeous range of clothes we’ve selected to give you that head start!
1. White cotton self embroidered shirt under cotton blend houndstooth check jacket, jersey knit pants, leather belt and cross body bag, jewellery necklaces.
2. Cream Italian knit jumper under cotton blend fine black check jacket, jersey knit pants, webbing belt, leather cross body bag and double crystal necklace.
3. Beige angora blend jumper under multi coloured cotton blend fringed jacket, jersey knit pants and freshwater pearl necklace.
4. Beige linen midi dress under classic blazer in pale caramel, animal print scarf/tie and adjustable leather and bead necklace.
5. White linen fully lined classic jacket with black pinstripe over angora blend black jumper, linen and cotton wide leg pants, gold mixed metal feature necklace.

STRUCTURE.
SOLUTIONS. SMART FINANCE BUILDS BETTER BUSINESSES
In business, success isn’t just about how much you make. It’s about how well you manage what you make, and how you structure your operations to support growth without crumbling under pressure.
As someone who works with everyday Australians building wealth through property and business, I’ve seen first-hand how the right financial foundation can be the difference between sustainable growth and a slow financial burn. It’s not always the flashiest businesses that win, it’s the ones with the best structure, clearest strategy, and smartest funding.
A business with poor financial structure is like a house built on sand. It might look fine until it starts raining and the whole show begins to fall apart.
Your financial structure is everything from how your entity is set up (sole trader, trust, company) to how you handle cash flow, asset ownership, and liabilities. If you’re blending personal and business expenses, skipping BAS lodgements, or ignoring how your loans are set up, you’re not just risking tax headaches, you’re holding yourself back from real growth and a healthy business. A good business structure looks like:
• Entity setup that aligns with your income, growth plans, and risk profile
• Separation of personal and business finances
• Systems for regular reporting, forecasting, and compliance
• Loan structures that support cash flow, not hinder it
Strategy is where most businesses get stuck. Too often, finance is reactive scrambling for cash flow when it gets tight or chasing a cheap loan without thinking about long-term implications. This is where the danger lies. Smart businesses treat finance as part of the strategy, not the panic response. Do you want to grow fast and flip?
Build long-term income? Expand your team or add equipment? Every goal requires a different financial strategy. Strategic finance questions to ask:
• What’s the next stage of growth, and what funding will it require?
• How can I leverage existing assets to fund expansion?
• Is my current lending limiting my opportunities?
• What’s the plan if revenue dips for 3–6 months?
The best businesses I work with think 1-3 years ahead, not just until the next BAS is due.
Finance isn’t one-size-fits-all. You don’t need “just a loan,” you need a solution that works with your structure and fuels your strategy. You need:
• A working capital facility that scales with revenue

A good broker doesn’t just find a lender. They tailor a plan and make sure your finance works for you, not against you. Business owners are natural risk-takers. But the ones who last are the ones who treat finance with the same seriousness as their marketing, operations, or customer service.
Structure gives you a foundation. Strategy gives you a direction. Solutions give you momentum.
If you’re serious about building a business that not only grows but lasts, start treating your finance like a priority, not an afterthought.

MODERN COASTAL STYLE
As you approach Vivid Homes newest Display Home, the soft light settles gently across the facade.
A modern coastal blend of warm textures and clean, confident lines. The exterior is layered in curated cladding profiles that create rhythm and depth, inviting you closer without a word.
There is an immediate calm - like the home knows exactly who it’s for.
Stepping through the oversized front door, the transition is seamless yet striking. The space opens gradually… your eye naturally drawn past the entryway - placing your bag down on the bench, your eyes continue along the custom bar cabinetry and sculpted kitchen forms, before lifting to the raked ceiling and landing on the hero a beautiful stone fireplace that anchors the room in quite luxury. Its not just a walkthrough - it’s a flow. One that’s been designed, built and styled with deep intent.
Styling Tip 1. A SUBTLE REVEAL
Styling this home wasn’t about placing pieces, it was about revealing the builders’ work.
We leaned into the architecture, framing natural light, drawing the eye to soft transitions and letting the timber, stone and texture do most of the talking. Nothing was added with our intention.
Each element was chosen to elevate what was already there.
From soft, tonal linens that ground the bedrooms to sculptural vessels that echo the curves of joinery… this was styling designed to feel invisible but immersive.
Styling Tip 2. TACTILE, LAYERED, QUITE
This palette throughout reflects Vivid’s signature grounded luxury. Sun washed neutrals, coastal layers, and subtle movements. We styled with restraint to allow the home to breathe to invite buyers to imagine their own rhythm within the walls.
Styling Tip 3. A BUILDERS VISION - INTERPRETED
The real magic happens when styling feels like it belongs - when it’s not an add on, but an interpretation of the builder’s intent. That’s what this home is.
Every surface, every finish, every corner is given purpose. Visitors don’t just see the home - they feel it. And that’s the feeling ? It’s not luck. It’s what happens when construction styling is done right. Check out the new Vivid display home located in the Springs - 10 West Spring Way, Nikenbah.

BUSINESS IS BUSINESS — AND COMMUNITY IS EVERYTHING!
This month, we’re shining a light on our incredible local businesses and the unique contributions they make to the Fraser Coast community. I’ve always admired the sweat, tears, and joy that small business owners pour into their labours of love.
We’re fortunate to see so many new ventures emerging across the region, particularly in the area of integrated natural health therapies. More people are now turning to alternatives outside the conventional healthcare model, and the impact is both inspiring and heartening. Personally, I’ve seen the positive shifts in clients who have embraced a more holistic approach to health — guided by passionate, knowledgeable natural healthcare providers.
From Naturopathy to Ayurvedic principles, breathwork, intuitive therapy, yoga, Pilates, and nutrition — our local area offers a wealth of resources to support your wellness journey. I’ve even had the privilege of working alongside local GPs who take a whole-person approach to healing, seeking root causes rather than simply treating symptoms. These are signs of real progress — and worth celebrating.
Beyond healthcare, we have many other businesses supporting community wellbeing. One great example is Fraser Coast Mushrooms. Mushrooms are rich in nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They support heart health, strengthen the immune system, promote gut health, and may even protect against certain diseases.
A standout variety is the Lion’s Mane mushroom. If you haven’t heard of it before, it’s time to take notice!
Lion’s Mane is packed with brain-boosting compounds and is a good source of thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, manganese, zinc, and potassium. Its potential benefits include:
• Supporting cognitive function and memory
• Easing symptoms of anxiety and depression
• Aiding nerve repair
• Protecting against ulcers and inflammation
• Supporting heart and immune health
• Managing diabetes symptoms
• Possibly preventing certain cancers
This powerful healing mushroom has become a favourite in my business. I’m proud to create Lion’s Mane extracts using locally grown mushrooms — supporting not just health, but also the people behind the product. There’s something special about knowing where your ingredients come from and building relationships with local growers.
At the heart of it all, it’s about unity in community — and we’re grateful to you for supporting Alive Magazine, which helps keep that spirit alive.

THE LAWN BOY
When I was twelve years old, I found myself staring longingly at the shiny new bike in the store window. It had everything: bright red paint, sleek tires, and a shiny chrome bell that sounded like success. Unfortunately, the single coin rattling around in my piggy bank did not encourage much hope for such an acquisition, and my parents had a strict “no chores, no bike” policy.
As a result of this conundrum, I came up with a plan: I would venture forth and start my very own lawn mowing business.
Rummaging through the garage, I found a rusty old push mower that my dad deemed “vintage,” and determinedly planned a foray into my neighbourhood, ready to conquer the vast wilderness of lawns belonging to unsuspecting neighbours in our locale.
The very next day, I donned a worn straw hat, which flopped over my eyes, and set out with a hand-painted sign that read “Lawn Mowing—$10.”
I felt like a businessman—at least until I realised I had no idea how to push a mower let alone get the darned thing running.
Mrs Rimmer, who lived 3 doors down, was my first customer. She watched kindly as I yanked repeatedly on the starter cord coaxing the old engine into life, clapping her hands with delight.
The job took twice as long as it should have, and by the time I had finished, the lawn was full of half mown tufts of grass and grass clippings covered her verandah. Nevertheless, Mrs Rimmer was ecstatic that I had stopped by, presenting me with a cold lemonade and pressing a generous tip into my hand. At that point she became a VIP customer as I felt a surge of pride that I had begun the journey to bike ownership so successfully.
ALBUM OF THE MONTH
The next morning - Saturday, our home phone rang at exactly 8am. “Is that the lawn boy?”
A querulous voice inquired. It was Mrs Hall, a neighbour from a block down the road. “I’m a friend of Anne Rimmer’s. Can you mow my lawn?”
That call signalled the beginning of my summer lawn mowing empire. It turned out that my less than successful but honest service had been recommended by Mrs Rimmer to everyone she knew and the rest was history.
Looking back, I understood how valuable the lessons I learned along the way were. First and foremost, I began to understand the importance of negotiating with customers. “$10 for mowing your lawn is alright!” I’d say glibly, and then wish that they would increase their offer. After a while I realised I could offer discounts for repeat business, and I began to notice that my clients would often pay me to do extra jobs as well if I was reliable and trustworthy.
By the summer’s end, I had earned enough for my dream bike—and then some! More importantly, I learned not just about mowing lawns, but also about commitment, honest business practices and the importance of customer service.
It was a momentous day when I rode my new bike to Mrs Rimmer’s house to show it off. “It’s a fine bicycle young man,” she said with a broad smile, handing me an extra large glass of lemonade. “Go and enjoy yourself!,” she called out as I rode off proudly. “By the way, I have a friend who might need their lawn done next week!”
“Ok!” I exclaimed, waving whilst making a mental note to hand over the reins of my business to my brother for the rest of the summer, having already decided to enjoy my new two-wheeled freedom in the knowledge that I had just learned my final lesson in business - knowing when to take a holiday.
Four by Toto
Released on April 8, 1982, “Toto IV” showcases Toto’s exceptional blend of rock, pop, and jazz influences. The album features standout tracks like “Rosanna” and “Africa,” both of which became iconic hits, still in constant rotation on commercial radio stations today. The songwriting combines sheer lyricism with rich harmonies and intricate instrumental parts. The production quality is impeccable, a feature of this time in album production, while the band’s technical mastery shines through, particularly in
David Paich’s keyboard work and Steve Lukather’s guitar solos.
“Toto IV” won multiple Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, while critics have maintained that it is ‘a perfect example of the essence of 80s rock with timeless appeal.’ From soaring choruses to technically perfect arrangements, each track delivers a compelling experience. This album solidified Toto’s legacy as stalwarts in the music industry and remains a must-listen for fans of classic rock.

FEELING YOUR WAY? THAT’S OKAY.
I’ve spoken with quite a few people recently who feel confused about where their life is headed. With turmoil in many places in the world, as well as challenges in our personal lives, it’s easy to feel like we’re wandering around in the dark. The path ahead, that once we took for granted, seems suddenly harder to follow.
If you are experiencing these feelings, I want you to know that you are not alone.
Although we can’t see it with our eyes, each of us is part of a huge, shared energy field that encompasses all life on Earth. Like it or not, it’s almost impossible not to be intuitively affected by the disturbed energies that surround us. If those close to us are having a tough time, we will likely feel unsettled as well. On a planetary level, an explosion in the level of fear, violence and suffering, wherever that may occur, will affect us to some degree. As energetic beings, we can’t avoid being influenced by the energy ‘soup’ we are immersed in.
I’ve often likened the experience of living to driving a car along a road at night. Our headlights allow us to see a certain distance ahead, but it is impossible to know what’s coming around the corner. We continue travelling in good faith, assuming and hoping the road continues and that our journey will end safely.
The reality is that we can never be sure of what our next breath or the new day will bring. It’s soothing, but perhaps very naïve, to expect that our life will unfold just as we desire. Sometimes, the lessons we need to learn are hard and our highest growth comes from

the courage in moving forward in dark times. If you feel like you are feeling your way, unable to see as clearly as you would like, then I assure you I feel the same. That’s what we signed up for.
A very close friend recently lost two sisters within five days. One passed from leukaemia, which was expected, but four days before that, her only other sister died suddenly from a blood clot that travelled to her heart. Both these events occurred less than a year after their brother had died from cancer.
How can my friend make sense of that? Her grief is overwhelming, and she feels as though her way forward has vanished. All I can do is listen to her, support her and allow her the space she needs to heal.
This true story brought home to me like a thunderclap that we cannot know how long each soul has chosen to live on Earth. These two sisters left the planet together, I believe, to reunite in the spirit world and continue growing in the way they need. They are fine.
My sympathies are with my friend, who now must find the light on her path and the meaning in her own life again. She is, in every sense, feeling her way, as though blindfolded from seeing her road ahead.
It’s okay to feel as though you are feeling your way. Don’t feel embarrassed to talk to those who you trust about your thoughts and feelings. Sometimes, just sharing our concerns helps us to glimpse little patches of light that might open for us.

Oh!Wide Bay is a powerhouse of innovation, resilience and vibrant community spirit, but like many regional areas its achievements don’t always make it to our decisionmakers. That’s why events like the Wide Bay Promotion Night, held at Queensland’s Parliamentary Annexe on 26 June, are so important in giving our region’s businesses and community leaders the chance to engage directly with politicians and policymakers.
This year’s event brought together more than 30 exhibitors from the electorates of Maryborough, Hervey Bay, and Burnett, under the theme ‘Bridging River and Coast – Showcasing Our Local Strengths’. From tourism and agriculture to manufacturing and community services, the exhibitors delivered a strong message: Wide Bay is a key contributor to Queensland’s economy and a great place to live and work in.
Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said the event demonstrated not only Wide Bay’s economic diversity, but also its deep sense of community pride.
“Every year this event grows, and this year’s was no exception. Our producers, operators and businesses truly impressed, and the level of engagement from decision-makers shows just how much respect and interest there is in our region.”
Member for Hervey Bay, David Lee said that the event was a chance to remind our decision makers about how important the region is to the broader Queensland economy.
“The night is a fantastic opportunity to spotlight the electorate and thank the hardworking local businesses and organisations. It was a chance to remind Brisbane just how important our region is to Queensland’s tourism and economic success.”
Member for Maryborough, John Barounis also said that the event gave exhibitors the opportunity to celebrate their successes and share unique stories.
“It was a fantastic opportunity for the Maryborough, Hervey Bay, and Burnett electorate offices to come together recently and proudly showcase what makes our region truly great, right in the heart of Parliament.”
Events like the Wide Bay Promotion Night highlights the deep community pride that connects and defines us as a region. Well done Wide Bay, the spotlight was yours on the night and the accolades are well deserved!
