appy Mother’s Day month! I hope everyone has recovered from their Easter chocolate comas and are adjusting to the need for an extra layer at nights.

Customarily we like to interview a local Mum for this ‘Mother’s month’ issue, and this is no exception.

The kicker this year is that not only is our guest a Mother of 6 of her own children, she is also the ‘every Mum’ in our community.

Anyone who has met Tina Davie will know exactly what I mean by this, as she naturally adopts the role of the mother figure to anyone fortunate enough to find themselves in her nurturing orbit.

She is the executive director of Bayside transformations, Wide Bay’s branch (one of five) of the “Transformation Program” umbrella, of which she is also the General Manager.

“It is a ‘therapeutic community residential recovery program’ for people suffering from addiction or mental health issues”, Tina explains.

The composition of the centre is quite genius in its approach, making each individual feel welcome, included and important. Each person that becomes a part of Bayside Transfomations fulfils a role and becomes interwoven into the fabric of the community. Filling a double purpose, the centre is completely self sufficient and gives purpose to those who become a part of it.

Tina explains that a big part of nurturing is giving these people what they NEED and not necessarily what they want (or at least think they want). The structure and discipline entrenched in the program is tried and tested to yield the life changing results these people are desperately craving.

Firm but fair comes to mind but in this case it’s more; ‘firm but fair with a generous splash of love.’

As I entered Bayside Transformations, located in Torquay, Hervey Bay, and made my way up to Tina’s office, the word LOVE is generously splashed around in various mediums - pictures, giant wooden letters, ornaments and numerous other insignia all reinforce the message, “this is a loving, nurturing place.”

She introduces me to the concept of ‘re-parenting’ which is part of the holistic approach to nurturing the centres provide. “They get re-parented. We’re reparenting them, but with love, that’s the difference.”

The whole Transformations program’s foundations are structured around this concept. She explains the program is designed to give them; “a hand up, not a hand out.” It’s no free ride and there is a lot of work involved. The structure is very organic in nature.

“It’s like a living organism. It’s a big family and everyone here has their place.” She goes on to tell me how a majority of the rules are actually created by the residents themselves enforced by herself and her staff for the benefit of all. It has been said that the opposite of addiction is not sobriety, but connection, and this environment allows that to be the cure.

I note the repeated use of ‘chaos’ and ‘chaotic situations’ she uses to describe the environments the residents come from, which I understand to be the polite way of saying ‘completely dysfunctional or toxic.’ The programs structure creates order and purpose in their lives and leads to happier, more responsible individuals leading much better lives than was possible for them before.

I was fascinated to find out how Tina came to become such an all-nurturing mother figure. What I found out was both surprising and typical. She shares openly about her story, particularly her adolescence.

“I was living on the streets by thirteen.” She goes into the ‘chaotic’ home environment and the domestic abuse that lead her to make that choice— spoiler, it’s not a fun story. She tells me how she was ‘uncontrollable’ and how she began self medicating with drugs and alcohol so early on.

She was ward of the state and institutionalised for two years at this time, further solidifying her burning desire not to let her own children go through anything similar.

I was quite saddened to hear that her own biological mother was not able to affirm her or even provide her with physical touch. It’s at this point we discuss the cyclical nature of family patterns and Tina makes it clear that she holds no malice, only understanding of the circumstances leading to this. As is often the case, it was the extreme opposite that made her so determined to be a mother and a nurturing figure in her life. Having experienced the absence of such a core need, she wanted to help anyone and everyone she could that were in a similar situation.

After the institutionalisation due to addiction and crime she began to play by the rules. She tells me that although she was playing ball by societies standards, she was still very much broken inside. The mothering instinct continued to burn brighter each day and at the ripe age of seventeen, she had her first child. The next chapter in her life was spent raising six, beautiful children, three biological and three from marriage.

Around the age of 30 she noted a significant shift in her life. She found faith and began to make lasting, healthy changes for herself and her family.

Her nurturing spirit reached new heights and she discovered a new-found love and purpose to help those who are homeless, struggling with addiction, outcasts of society and in need of love.

She began volunteering for DrugArm, patrolling the streets connecting and serving the homeless in Brisbane. If DrugArm sounds familiar to you, it’s possibly because I interviewed Marty Erlandson of the Maryborough branch last year in the family issue.

The next step for Tina, not twelve months later, was to branch out and provide her own street van service. She would provide food, warm beverages and blankets as well as genuinely connecting with the people living on the streets of Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley. “They knew me”, she shares, reinforcing Marty’s message of the importance of building trust and therefore hope for these unfortunate people.

I can sense both pride and surprise as she tells me about her two degrees, “I don’t even know how I achieved that, based on my level of schooling.” Her undergraduate in Psychology and Postgraduate in counselling, both aligned with her role and life’s purpose. As well as running the centre, she also conducts trauma counselling for residents with particularly ‘chaotic’ pasts.

I see traits of Mother Teresa, a strong influence of Tina’s, but I also see the tough childhood and no-nonsense attitude when I meet her gaze. I can tell she has been through it all and how she can fully relate to the types of souls that find themselves in the program.

I also get to enjoy the fun, childlike nature that emerges as she starts to understand me and my intentions in our interaction. We end up laughing and bonding and I start to see the complex depth of character of this powerful Mother figure.

I walk away from our interview and photo session with a smile on my face. I feel a sense of comfort knowing that individuals that come from less than ideal environments and have fallen into a dark, seemingly hopeless place, are not alone. They are not helpless. There is a place for them and there is a person that will love them unconditionally. There is a place they can call home and people they can call family.

ike many do, most years I give myself a theme to work towards - an area of my existence that’s been lacking in some way - ‘connection’, ‘fearless’ or whatever. This year, I’ve really been working on something so basic it shouldn’t need its name spoken out loud, but here we are…

2025 for me is all about ‘Self-Care’, and not the kind that’s all massages and woo woo fabulosity (which sounds wonderful, don’t get me wrong).. this is simply getting the basics of caring for this one body and one life of mine consistently and effectively nourishment in all its forms, I guess…

Realistically for me, it’s been about acknowledging that somewhere in the whirlwind of raising children, running a business, and just generally adult-ing, looking after myself properly just seems to slip down to the very bottom of the to-do.

And while I train in one form or other most days, it’s the maintenance bits that land on the ‘should’ pile rather than the ‘must’ pile… The stretching, the recovery, the ‘tune-ups’ that keep everything running smoothly… Let’s just say there’s, ahem, ample room for improvement there.

So how fitting (and fortunate) that this month’s adventure for Alive would lead me to the mysterious art of Bowen therapy with the wonderful Mel at Body Mechanix in Urangan.

Ever since I moved to Hervey Bay in 2013, I’ve heard whispers about Bowen therapy – always positive, sometimes so glowing it’s bordering on evangelical – but I’d never actually experienced it for myself.

I really didn’t know what to expect, except that so many locals absolutely swear by the modality.

For the uninitiated (as I was), Bowen therapy is a

holistic, gentle, hands-on approach that works with the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

It involves a series of precise, rolling movements over specific points on muscles, tendons and connective tissue, with strategic pauses between movements to allow the body to process and respond.

It sounds simple, but its effects can be profound.

Unlike some therapies that work against the body, forcing compliance, Bowen works with it – coaxing rather than commanding.

Arriving at the clinic, I was immediately welcomed

by Mel and led to a treatment room that sent a wry smile to the corners of my mouth.

Far from the typical ‘alternative therapy’ aesthetic – you know, with gentle waterfalls playing in the background and dream-catchers adorning every wall – what greeted me was a funky, industrialthemed space.

As Mel later explained, the aesthetic serves many purposes. She and Craig wanted to create a vibe they adored, seeing as they spend the majority of their time there. The playlist of ‘90s and ‘00s acoustic covers of rock classics completes the experience.

This deliberate contrast to what many expect from an ‘alternative therapy’ practice makes their services more widely embraced by folks who might ordinarily shy away from anything remotely hippity dippity.

I later learned that Craig himself has been a Bowen therapist for more than 25 years, well-known throughout the Fraser Coast for healing locals and making a real difference in their lives.

You’d never guess he’d been facing significant health challenges recently – a testament to both his resilience and the healing practices he champions.

His personal journey through the medical system actually informed the clinic’s holistic approach and broader range of treatments. Beyond Bowen therapy, they’ve expanded to offer acupuncture, hypnotherapy and IV infusions – giving clients multiple pathways to wellness under one roof.

Before beginning, Mel explained what was about to happen.

Bowen is about treating the whole body rather than isolating one area (given these things are literally all connected, that makes a lot of sense!).

She mentioned that the therapy is gentle but effective, and that she’d be moving between multiple clients to ensure each manoeuvre has time to embed and take effect.

By all accounts, the point is to restore alignment and functionality to the body, especially starting with the hips that are basically the ‘start of everything’ when it comes to both alignment AND a well-functioning body (and couldn’t we all do with a bit more of that in our lives).

Time to get going!

Climbing onto the table, I was ready to let go of all my aches and pains and embrace the next hour or so of peaceful contemplation.

The treatment itself consisted of subtle but effective movements that held so much promise for my tired body.

Something that struck me throughout was the

sense that this modality was specifically about working with your body rather than against it. I think sometimes we brute force our bodies into doing our bidding, even when it’s not the best thing for us.

This felt more like gentle encouragement rather than overpowering the natural order.

Even though the sessions are designed to encourage peaceful introspection, I wouldn’t have been doing my job if I didn’t chat a bit along the way, right?!

Mel’s such easy company - that effortless mix of flowing conversation and authenticity that makes you feel like you’ve been mates with her forever.

Her journey into Bowen is an incredible story; A single mum of three, fate led her to her calling as a Bowen therapist more than a decade ago.

I don’t want to spoil her story, but you should really ask her about it sometime. Suffice to say, Joy and I both had goosebumps by the end of it!

What I can say without questions is that Mel is warm, passionate, confident, and clearly a master of the craft she’s dedicated her life to.

As Mel worked, I became aware of just how many tight spots and problem areas I’d been ignoring in my body.

She found them all with expert precision – shoulders that have apparently been living somewhere up near my ears, knotted muscles that had become my new normal.

The evidence of my neglected self-care was literally at her fingertips, and I felt a wave of selfconsciousness.

But there was no judgment from Mel – only kindness and a genuine desire to help.

and surprisingly eager to return – sure, to life, but also to do it all again!

The permission to acknowledge these areas that needed attention without shame or criticism.

On my drive home, I reflected on the experience.

That, perhaps, was the most powerful aspect of the treatment.

Just gentle awareness and the first steps toward making things right.

Mel explained that the body knows what to do – Bowen is part of the process of reminding it.

It’s a simple concept but profound when you think about it.

How much of our modern approach to health is about forcing, controlling, and overriding our body’s natural processes rather than supporting them?

The session was generous in length but passed quickly. Before I knew it, we were finishing up, and I was feeling… different.

Not battle weary in the way a deep tissue massage might leave you feeling, but subtly, importantly different.

More balanced. More connected.

Like parts of me had come back online after being dormant for too long.

As I slowly sat up, I felt revived. More centred,

I had the sense that this wasn’t a one-anddone sort of therapy, but something that builds and deepens over time.

In our quest for self-care, I think many of us (myself included) often gravitate toward the dramatic and intensive – the punishing workout, the restrictive diet, the treatments that hurt before they help.

There’s a place for intensity, certainly, but there’s also wisdom in gentleness.

In working with rather than against.

In trusting that our bodies know what they’re doing, if only we’d get out of their way.

As I pull into my driveway, I’m already mentally scheduling my next appointment.

This ‘Year of Self-Care’ might just be a thing after all…

THE BACKYARD GARDEN: A HAVEN FOR MINDFULNESS I

n our small backyard, the world slows down and something extraordinary unfolds. Tiny hands explore the soil, and two little boys discover peace in life’s simplest moments. As both a mum and a teacher, I’ve always valued the importance of mindfulness, but it wasn’t until we began tending our garden that I truly witnessed its transformative power. What started as a few pots of flowers, a raised garden bed, and a patch of green has blossomed into a haven for my sons, aged 5 and 7 — a place where emotions settle, senses awaken, and life moves at just the right pace.

But it’s not just the flowers and fruits. The boys love digging in the raised garden bed, searching for worms and watching bugs go about their tiny lives. Their fascination with the unseen world beneath the soil is a reminder that there’s magic in the small things. Sometimes, they’ll spend an hour turning over the dirt, giggling when they uncover a wiggling worm. These moments, grounded in curiosity and connection, are priceless.

When my youngest son feels overwhelmed, he wanders over to the lavender bush. He presses the soft purple blooms to his nose, inhales deeply, and says, “It smells like calm, Mum.” That single moment, a pause in his busy little world, speaks volumes. For him, the lavender is more than a plant; it’s a tool that helps him reset and find

balance. For my oldest son, it’s the vibrant colours of the flowers that draws him in. The bright reds, yellows, and oranges planted in pots around the yard bring him joy. He notices every new bloom, marvelling at nature’s palette. Together, we watch the apples on our tree slowly grow and ripen. It’s become a lesson in patience, a quiet practice in delayed gratification. Each time he asks, “Are they ready yet?” and I reply, “Not yet, but soon,” he smiles, knowing the wait will make the reward even sweeter.

Watering the garden has become a cherished ritual, especially for my youngest. He holds the hose, letting the water arc over the plants, the sound soothing him in ways words never could.

He once described it as “making the garden happy.” And in turn, I see how it makes him happy -how it helps him process his emotions without even realising it. One of my proudest moments was when my eldest son carefully collected seeds from our lettuce plants. It was slow, deliberate work, but he didn’t rush. He focused, gently pulling each tiny seed and placing it in a bag.

Watching him, I realised how deeply these small mindfulness activities have taken root in their lives. These aren’t just gardening tasks; they’re life lessons in patience, care, and presence. As a teacher, I know the pressures children face in structured environments. As a mum, I see how those pressures can spill over into their emotions.

But here in our garden, there are no grades, no deadlines.”

But here in our garden, there are no grades, no deadlines - just the rhythm of nature and the freedom to explore it. These daily moments in our backyard have taught me that mindfulness doesn’t have to be complicated or timeconsuming. Sometimes, it’s as simple as picking a ripe blueberry or watching a worm wiggle through the soil.

I’m not suggesting you need a sprawling garden to experience these benefits. Our backyard is small, just a patch of green, some pots, and a raised bed. But even in this modest space, the lessons are abundant. Gardening has given my boys a way to process their emotions, to ground themselves, and to connect with the world around them. And it’s given me, as their mum, a chance to watch them grow - not just as gardeners, but as individuals. So, if you’re looking for a way to slow down, to reconnect as a family, and to give your children a space to process the big emotions that come with being little, I invite you to start small. Plant a pot of herbs, hang a basket of flowers, or start a tiny garden bed. The rewards, I promise you, will be far greater than the effort. In our backyard, surrounded by the scent of lavender and the hum of bees, we’ve found more than just a garden. We’ve found a way to be present, to breathe, and to grow—together.

STIX & STRINGZ What is the story behind the name “Stix & Stringz”?

The story behind the name Stix & Stringz is that our instruments consist of drum sticks and the strings of the ukulele and guitar as well as the keyboard. The sounds from these instruments form both our unparalleled folk pop sound and unique name. So, that’s where the actual name comes from.

Tell us about forming a band as a family?

We started out jamming around the kitchen table over dinner which then turned into playing at The Open Mics together just for a bit of fun and then we decided that we should start a band. After lots of rehearsals whenever we had spare time at home, we then went on to busk in Byron Bay and Hervey Bay to gain following. Since then, we have played at many events and venues across Queensland and New South Wales and now we are playing at Camp for a Cure in Gootchie on Sunday the 4th of May.

What is it about music that makes you feel passionate?

The thing about music that makes us feel passionate is the connection with the audience, when everyone is clapping or tapping along to the songs you play. It is also the ability to be able to communicate with people from all places and walks of life through a universal language which is music. The passion comes from all the people that support us including our mum who is our rock in life and conveniently our keyboardist.

Do you write your own music? Where can we find your music?

We have written many songs to date and have recorded and released two of those songs. The two releases are ‘Sailing’ and ‘I Miss You Already’ which you can find on all of your favourite music streaming platforms like Spotify or Apple Music.

rowing sustainable wealth is a process best nurtured over time. Small consistent moves will compound your growth and allow you to invest and live at the same time. It is also a safer option which I have found is a contributor to stopping people from starting.

You can start buying shares or crypto in small amounts consistently. he subject of this month’s edition, ‘Nurturing’, is multifaceted encompassing the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of life. And who better to take credit than our Mothers, this Mothers Day! Descriptive of the best nurturing qualities is a person who is compassionate, caring, loving, sympathetic, helpful, kind, empathetic, soft-hearted, warm, protective and encouraging.

Those who embrace these attributes have often had parents who led by example, who offered unconditional acceptance, valuing each child for who they are, not who they wish them to be.

The role of a parent is to encourage each individual child to reach their potential by helping them to feel special and loved, while cultivating a sense of belonging. This important task needs patience and an intentionality to slow down, ‘stop to smell the roses’, enjoy the journey and create special memories.

emma Lightbody is determined to give back to the very strangers that helped her during the toughest times of her life.

The Torquay resident has been appointed the recipient liaison officer for local charity Rally for a Cause where she works at the front-line of the charity’s work to assist those facing life-limiting medical conditions and other tragic circumstances.

“I may never get to meet them but that doesn’t mean we are not forever grateful and thankful to the donors and supporters for their generosity and assistance.”

Rally for a Cause has raised more than $4m in the past decade to assist eligible locals facing life-limiting medical diagnosis through short-term financial support.

A qualified nurse and former special school teacher’s aide, Gemma is perfectly positioned to help those during these tough times as both she and her daughter are former beneficiaries of the award-winning charity.

In 2020, Gemma and husband Ben had their lives turned upside down when their five-month-old daughter Connie was diagnosed with a rare, lifethreatening heart condition.

If Connie’s diagnosis and ongoing medical care wasn’t life-impacting enough for this young family, just six months later Gemma, aged 30, was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer.

Rally for a Cause assisted the family on both occasions by providing short-term financial relief and support to help cover living expenses, medical costs and travel to city hospitals for treatment.

“It is rare that the one family is a double recipient of Rally for a Cause which is why we are so thankful and intent on giving back.

“We are forever grateful for the support we received from the charity and the generous businesses and community members that donate to help those in need.”

When the opportunity arose to work for the charity Gemma realised her personal and professional experience could be helpful to others in need.

“I have experienced what many of the recipients are going through so I feel well positioned to provide that support and guidance where required.

“We will never forget how Rally for a Cause was there for us and what a difference that made to our lives at the time. Now is my chance to give back and repay the love and support we received for those that support the charity.

his month is going to be focusing on how to nurture yourself, living in a world where there is so much uncertainty, it is vital for our health and well-being to harness the ability to nurture ourselves and others. As we all know, we can not help others if we don’t help ourselves.

A simple way to start our day is with gratitude. Like any consistent health care routine in life, cultivating a gratitude practice can help to replenish your energy each day and nurture one self.

Key points on how Gratitude impacts mental health:

Reduces stress and anxiety: By focusing on positive experiences, gratitude can help to counteract negative thoughts and feelings associated with stress and anxiety.

Boosts mood: Regularly expressing gratitude can lead to increased feelings of happiness and overall life satisfaction.

Improves resilience: A grateful mindset can help individuals cope with adversity and bounce back from setbacks more effectively.

Strengthens relationships: Expressing appreciation for others can foster stronger social connections and improve relationship quality.

Enhances self-esteem: Recognizing positive aspects of your life can contribute to a more positive selfimage.

Look around there are so many things to be grateful for. Think about them, do some journalling, and write them down.

My choice of Herbal Remedy for nurturing oneself is Dandelion.

Dandelions have many potential health benefits.

Research suggests that they may provide a good source of antioxidants, help reduce cholesterol, regulate blood sugar, boost the immune system, and reduce inflammation.

Dandelion may also lower blood pressure, aid in digestion and weight loss, promote skin and liver health, and reduce the risk of cancer.

An excellent all rounder to nurture your whole body inside and out.

I have found it has been particularly good for that cough that keeps hanging around.

You can use all parts of the Dandelion (leaves, flowers, stems and root). Dandelion root are the most medicinal. I use the root to make a herbal extract (tincture). You can also make a tea or put the leaves and flowers in salad.

To make a correct identification to be sure you have a true dandelion, the plant will produce “one flower stem with one flower”, and the flower will smell like honey.

Other lookalikes will have a flower stem and lots of flowers coming off the stem, this is not a true dandelion.

Another amazing thing about dandelion is they also nurture the soil by drawing nutrients up from deep within the soil and fixing the nutrient balance, such a wonderful plant to have in the garden.

I hope we can all take some time to find gratitude for all the small things in life, as they make up the big things.

PEA AND HAM SOUP Ingredients

• 500g green dried split peas

• 1.2-1.5kg Zac’s Meats ham hocks • 1/4 tsp salt

• 3/4 tsp black pepper

• 2 garlic cloves, minced

• 2 bay leaves, dried or fresh

• 1 potato, chopped into small cubes • 1 onion, finely chopped

• 1 carrot, peeled and finely chopped • 2 celery sticks, finely chopped • 8 cups (2 litres) water Instructions 1.

Rinse peas under running water then pop into slow cooker, push ham in. Scatter all ingredients around the ham bone, then pour over water.

Slow cook 8 to 10 hours on LOW or 6 hours on HIGH. (Or 2.5 hours on low on stove, 1 hr – 1 hr 20 min pressure cooker/Instant Pot on HIGH)

Remove ham bone, shred ham meat. Discard bone and fatty skin.

Remove bay leaves. Use a stick blender to blitz 2 or 3 times – thickens soup but doesn’t make it completely smooth.

Return ham into slow cooker, stir. Taste and add more salt if needed.

Serve garnished with parsley. Serve with crusty bread for dunking.

Freezes 100% perfectly. Will last in the fridge for 4 to 5 days. Enjoy!

IT’S IN OUR NATURE TO NURTURE

T

he question of nature versus nurture is one of the philosophical questions that keeps me up at night. I often wonder if we are just carbon based life forms with some kind of alien pre-programmed genetic code, or are we malleable beings, moulded and shaped by our environment?

Scientists and erstwhile philosophers will invariably point you to studies of twins, where identical siblings raised apart still share unexplainable similarities, despite incongruous environments.

They’ll flummox you with genetic markers and complex algorithms that supposedly predict everything from your musical taste to your penchant for gherkins covered in chocolate.

What they tend to forget is that as humans, it’s predominantly in our nature to nurture what is around us, often in very disparate circumstances.

It’s not a simple concept to grasp though, the whole thing is a bit like trying to figure out if baking is more about flour or eggs. Both are essential, but the real magic happens when they mix in a serendipitous way. You can’t have a cake without both, and you can’t have a functioning human without both nature and nurture.

Take Mozart for example, a child born with a natural talent for music - pure genius. Without access to a piano, or a supportive environment however, that talent might never blossomed and the world would be the poorer for it. Alternatively, someone with no inherent musical talent might grow up immersed in music and through sheer determination and rigorous training, become a respectable musician.

What I love about life for all its chaos, is that when you boil everything down, we are all crazy, messed up products of both nature and nature. We’re born with certain predispositions, but our experiences, our families, our cultures, and even our random encounters shape us in far-reaching ways. As a result, our lives become a dynamic dance, a constant interplay between our inner selves and the world around us.

Let the scientists continue their pondering then, I just love the beautiful complexity of it all. Surely we’re not simply products of our genes, nor are we empty vessels waiting to be filled by those around us. We are a unique and ever-evolving combination of both, a delicious, unpredictable ‘cake of nature and nurture.’ As adults we are called to nurture and grow our families and those around us. Surely this is the better part of human nature?

‘Heart’ by Heart - 1985 As the 1980’s reached their peak, the popularity of various styles of music from synth driven dance music to ‘hair metal’ began to wane and falter. Right around this time ‘Heart’ by Heart, released in 1985, bucked this trend and surprised everyone by releasing what was to become a homage to the best of music of the time, not to mention a perfect example of sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson’s enduring song-writing and vocal prowess.

Though noticeably influenced by 80s production and accompanied by slick, now dated music videos, ‘Heart’ is the perfect mix of soaring vocals, driving rhythms, and a raw emotional intensity supported by impeccable musicianship and harmonic magic.

I remember the delight of discovering outstanding hits from the album such as “What about love,” “Alone” and “These Dreams” showcasing the band’s ability to craft made for radio anthems that solidified their connection with a wide cross section of listeners looking for some kind of musical redemption as a new decade loomed ever nearer.

Burrum

WINTER SPECIES ON THE MOVE

In the Burrum there has been reports of a few prawns in the Gregory along with a few muddies for those that are looking to put the pots in. Mangrove jacks have been active over the past week with the warmer weather. Whiting were good over the bigger tides with working the mid reaches of the river a better option for a feed of whiting this week. Out the front school mackerel have been found on the 8 mile with golden trevally and longtail tuna also about.

Wild Grounds

On the wide grounds scarlets, coral trout, snapper, hussar and parrot have been reported. Yellow fin tuna have also been about taking stick baits and soft plastics worked on the surface. Crews that ventured over Break Sea Spit were rewarded with some great reef fishing outside. Spanish mackerel and wahoo were also reported from the outside waters.

Platypus Bay

In Platypus Bay longtail tuna have been about on the surface, at this stage of the season the longtails can be on the move from one end of the bay to the other.

Soft plastics, metal slugs and stick baits have been getting results. School mackerel, spotted mackerel, scarletts, golden trevally and queenfish have also been reported from Platypus Bay.

Local Reefs

On the local reefs grass sweetlip, coral trout, cod and blackall were reported. Live baits have been best for the coral trout with soft plastics worked over the shallow reefs also effective. Around the islands queenfish, golden trevally and mid size GT’s have been taking poppers and soft plastics.

Sandy Straits

Whiting can also be found on the flats on the western side of Fraser Island, live yabbies have been getting the best results. Salmon have been patchy in the Mary River system with anglers using live baits getting the best results. Grunter and flathead have also been reported from the Mary River system.

Urangan Pier

Off the Urangan Pier bream, whiting, flathead have been the most consistent catches with works happening on the pier of late there isn’t too much to report from out the end in the second channel.

COMMUNICATING WITH YOUR LOVED ONES IN SPIRIT

W

ith Mother’s Day having been celebrated this month, I thought I’d explore how to communicate with the ones we love who have left their lives on Earth.

I know many of us greatly miss our parents, grandparents and other special people once they’ve died. But- if their life continues as soon as they take their last human breath, has there truly been a death? I would argue that no, there has not.

A big part of my role at the Fraser Coast Hospice as a Pastoral Care volunteer is phoning the families of clients who have passed away. Recently I had the pleasure of chatting to a husband whose wife had spent her last days there. Although he belonged to a conservative church, he shared with me the amazement he felt when he saw his wife’s spirit leave her body. This was the moment of her death. Once I assured him that I didn’t think he was crazy (his words) he told me she had visited him several times in their home and discouraged him from going to the cemetery because she wasn’t there. She made that point very strongly. These visitations brought him comfort and I would guess, have helped him cope a little easier with his loss.

If you share my belief that life continues after death, then you might like to know how you can best stay in touch with those who have transitioned to the next world.

My Mum, who lost her sight during her older age, wanted me to know that she could see again and felt marvellous. Likewise, if a person had severe emotional or mental challenges on Earth, they will no longer feel depressed, hopeless or confused. This also applies to those who have taken their own life. Healing is offered to all and deeper insights about the life that was lived are developed without judgement. A person may regret their actions but is given the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and missed opportunities.

Communicating with your loved ones isn’t hard.

Assume they are vibrant, well and want to hear from you. There’s no need to speak out loud. They will be able to hear your thoughts, so find a quiet place, focus your intention and just start chatting. You could hold a photo or other object that links you to them if you’d like, but this isn’t necessary. Your love will send your thoughts to them with wings. Any strong emotion will propel your thoughts to the spirit world.

You may not hear their voice answering you but look for signs that you have been heard. Sometimes you’ll come across something when you least expect it that triggers a special memory, scent or feeling that connects you to that one person you have been thinking of most. Our love for our mothers, grandmothers and mother-figures is often incredibly strong. Why not use that love to start your own conversation if you feel inspired to give it a try?

Firstly, don’t continue to imagine your loved ones as elderly, ill or injured. All physical problems belonged to their body, not their spirit.
