A

s a bonafide word-nerd and an ever vigilant student of life, I relish the opportunity to use our monthly topics to deep dive in something of a learning side-quest. This month has been interesting to explore the theme of peace, allowing the nuance to unravel upon my keen scrutiny.

As usual there are several levels to our theme and today we will be honing in on the former definition as per Oxford Languages—“Freedom from disturbance; Tranquility”, which lends itself to the local implications.

When I say local, I mean, of the individual level versus that of the global, which would take us down a very different and arguably more complicated path.

Simultaneously exciting and terrifying, the notion of inner peace, as it’s name would suggest, denotes an inside job. The fact it is our solo-levelling journey can be thrilling to some and unbearable to others.

Also these polarities can be oscillated during various stages of an individuals journey.

Knowing how difficult this human experience can be, devoid of a true sense of inner peace, it’s bizarre that there is not a much higher priority placed on it’s nurturing. This month I spend time with a man who has made it his life’s work, directly or indirectly, and we share an enjoyable and uplifting few hours discussing the ins and outs of inner peace.

“I can honestly say, I’m genuinely excited to be alive,” Fraser Coast local since 2002, Michael Green shares, roughly midway through our conversation. He goes on to share the variety of influences and practices that keep him in such a state. It’s inspiring to hear and more-so considering he is so passionate about sharing this with our local community and I guess anyone who crosses his path.

A true warrior can overcome the inclination of their ego and become an empowered, good hearted human being.”

As is often the case, the reason living a life of harmony, peace and purpose is of absolute importance to Michael is because it wasn’t always this way. In fact it was the complete opposite. If we rewind the clock back to his final year of high school, we find a very different young man.

Testament to the inner-work he has done since then, he recalls the most difficult time in his life with calm awareness. There is clearly an emotional sensitivity to this man that sits in contrast to his outer appearance, but the way he talks about that time is more matter of fact than from desperation.

He talks about the deep depression he was bound by and the constant feelings of desolation and confusion. Never was he able to feel like he was good enough or even belonged at all. Almost like an outcast or an alien in a country town. I feel great empathy as he even shares the darkest of thoughts leading to contemplations of self harm.

He admits to being in a self destructive pattern.

I note that it’s as if he’s a poet trapped in a warrior’s body and the more we talk, the more I’m certain of it.

At some point in the darkness Michael found a spark— he found martial arts.

Initially starting with Muay Thai kickboxing and Hwa Rang Do Taekwondo he finds a home and mentors in the gym. The following years would have Michael try several different styles and groups adding certainty to this being the catalyst for his life-changing and metaphorically life saving transformation.

Having always felt a connection to something bigger than himself, he started to learn more about spirituality as he is intuitively guided to connect on a deeper level and use it as an anchor for his personal development.

He shares how the discipline and physical intensity was so important for his mental health journey. Pushing himself beyond what he thought he was capable of opened up layer after layer in his self-discovery. “It’s about the strength and courage, but more of an inner strength,” he shares. He goes on to talk about what he learned about holistic living, incorporating mind, body and spirit and the importance of each. He talks about how the physical nature of the practice is a reflection of the inner work required. He finds renewed confidence through enduring what he never thought was possible for him.

In hindsight he sees how important the whole journey was, including the darkness and the suffering. He is able to make sense of it all and put labels to feelings. Among other inspirations he notes Bruce Lee and Dan Millman (author of ‘Way of The Peaceful Warrior’) as pivotal for his growth.

Michael continues to expand himself and takes on professional fights in the mixed martial arts (MMA) space. Successful despite it’s brevity, he chose to end his career much earlier than he was physically capable. “It never truly felt quite right to me.” He concludes that his inner guidance is pushing him toward helping people, sharing his wisdom and knowledge, much more than being an actual warrior in the ring.

He continues to add skills and qualifications as well as deepening his own practice and connection to his higher self. The more he learns about martial arts and also the spiritual teachings that overlap (including yoga and meditation), he gets better at tuning into and trusting his higher self. Michael shares with me that the deeper it gets, the more he is able to recognise that he is simply a conduit for the universe to work through him.

Integrated Development Academy is his current business, of which Integrated Martial Arts Academy is one branch and is located now, in Hervey Bay. He highlights that it’s the holistic personal development sphere that is important. “Not just martial arts and fighting, it’s strength development, the spiritual side and empowerment with the meditation and the yoga.”

The monthly connected-thread, of course, being the part where he also works with the local schools to implement some of the activities and practices.

The academy runs a wide gamut of classes from combat to meditation and much more, all with a focus on pushing personal development based on wherever the individual is right now.

Michael runs most but not all of the classes, allowing the space for long-term students to also become mentors and certified Martial Arts Instructors themselves.

He wants no recognition for his achievements by the way. In fact, this interview almost didn’t happen when he found out it was about him and not the academy! I made it as clear as I could that I’m a story teller first, and the message I’m getting loud and clear is that the whole point of all this is absolutely in line with what he wants.

To encourage and inspire people of all ages to live their life to the fullest and to keep pushing themselves. The ripple effect of people living

full, happy lives with purpose is that it gets expounded and expanded upon, reaching more people and so on.

“A true warrior can overcome the inclination of their ego and become an empowered, good hearted human being,” Michael says, indicating the difficulties and rewards associated with facing our inner selves. Towards the end of our time together he notes how grateful he is for this life, and all the friends, family and mentors that have helped him through this beautiful journey of life.

Sometimes humans have to experience detachment, depression and confusion in life to realise just how important the opposite is not just to the individual but the collective. Finding a sense of inner peace through hard work, connection through community and facing fears is such life changing work. Birthing courage, resilience and empowerment and then sharing that message through action is a heck of way to bring light into the world.

CREATING A PATH OF PEACE W

hen you’re feeling stressed or frustrated, heading outside for a leisurely walk to sort out your thoughts and feelings can often help.

There’s something so healing about being outside surrounded by natures many gifts like water, sunlight, trees, animals, scents, sounds and fresh air, that stimulate the senses and help calm the nerves.

Fraser Coast residents are lucky to have the added benefit of Hervey Bay’s foreshore being right on our doorstep with exquisite sea views as far as the eye can see.

This is where Hervey Bay’s Veronika Grant (Ronnie) uses nature’s blank canvas to slow down, quieten the mind, and go on a mindful journey using the ancient practice of drawing and walking a Labyrinth.

Ronnie is a local social worker who’s always learning and exploring evidence-based ways to help people heal from trauma.

She recently came across a book called Polyvagal Exercises for Safety and Connection by Deb Dana who is a clinician, consultant, author, and international lecturer on polyvagal theoryinformed work with trauma survivors.

Amongst the chapters was a small piece on Labyrinths that caught her eye.

“The book is about strategies and exercises for regulating the nervous system, finding safety and

connection —something I focus on a lot in my work,” Ronnie said.

“However, before I read the book, I had never once considered a labyrinth as part of that process.”

Cultures around the world have utilized labyrinths for about 4,000 years.

These circular or spiral structures, depending on who is creating them, have a single path that leads in and out of the centre.

Unlike a maze in which you have to work to find your way around, there are no tricks to a labyrinth, and no dead ends.

The goal is to move slowly without having a specific destination in mind as you follow along the twists and turns of the path.

A few months ago, Ronnie bought simple tools like a rake, hoe and a bamboo stick and headed to the beach to give it a try and just loved it!

The magic of these beautiful creations on the beaches between Point Vernon and Torquay has now been appreciated by many beachgoers who have been amazed to see the Labrinth just appear from nowhere.

“I find myself entering a relaxed state of mind while I draw.”

“I enjoy it when friendly and curious people on the beach stop by to say hello and walk the labyrinth.

“I’m very new to it, but so many people have shared how much they like it, which motivates me to keep going.

Ronnie said the ancient practice is very symbolic as there’s only a short window of opportunity to draw at low tide.

“As I walk the labyrinth, I hold a piece of coral or a shell in my hand, take a deep breath, and embrace a sense of peace and calm.

“By the time I arrive in the middle, I feel grounded.

“I hope that walking the labyrinth inspires more people to find their inner peace and creates a ripple effect that spreads throughout the community.”

There’s no doubt that we live in a society where everything is fast, Ronnie added, and slowing down for even just five minutes can make a difference.

“There’s no right or wrong way to walk the labyrinth just follow the path and enjoy the journey.

“The labyrinth in the sand compares to our short existence as humans.

“It’s a fleeting moment, a window of opportunity. If you spend your weekend scrolling on the phone, you’ll miss it.”

There will be one very special creation drawn on Saturday, May 3 to celebrate World Labyrinth Day that Fraser Coast residents can enjoy.

The intention of World Labyrinth Day is to bring people from all over the planet together in celebration of labyrinths as a symbol, tool, passion, or practice.

It’s an opportunity to inform and educate the public, host walks, build permanent and temporary labyrinths, make labyrinth art, or explore the archetype in other ways.

Participants are encouraged to “Walk as One at 1” in the afternoon to create a wave of peaceful energy around our planet as it turns in space.

The time Ronnie draws her creation will be tide dependant, but she would love the community to follow the Hervey Bay Labyrinth Facebook page for more details and take part.

A SANCTUARY WHEN IT MATTERS MOST: THE GIFT OF FRASER COAST HOSPICE

I

want to tell you about a sanctuary that exists right here in our community.

A place that, for many of us, exists in the periphery of our awareness. Something we know is there, but perhaps don’t really want to think about too much.

And yet, when more than 650 families in our region have experienced its embrace since opening, perhaps it’s time we all take a proper look at the extraordinary gift that is Fraser Coast Hospice.

The word ‘hospice’ itself can trigger a flutter of anxiety. It represents an acknowledgement of mortality that most of us spend our days deliberately not thinking about. But what if I told you that this place – this six-bed purpose-built facility nestled in Urraween – is actually one of the most profound sources of comfort and tranquility our community has to offer?

You see, what happens at Fraser Coast Hospice is nothing short of magical. It’s where the most vulnerable members of our community are surrounded by warmth, dignity and professional care. Where the clinical aspects of end-of-life care recede into the background, and the human elements – comfort, connection, and gentle serenity – take centre stage.

“What we provide isn’t just medical care,” shares Alicia, CEO-Director of Care at Fraser Coast Hospice. “We create a space where our clients can be themselves, not just patients, and where their loved ones can step back from being carers and simply be family again. That transformation – watching the relief wash over someone’s face when they realise they can just be a daughter or husband again – that’s the gift we’re privileged to offer.”

And it’s a gift that comes without a price tag.

The fee-free care is available to anyone in our community over 18 with a terminal illness, whether their stay lasts mere minutes or stretches to several days.

The space itself strikes that perfect balance – neither too clinical like a hospital, nor too informal to provide proper care. It’s a compromise that feels less like compromise and more like the best of both worlds. The quiet, calming atmosphere.

The attentive staff and volunteers. The everyday comforts of home.

What’s particularly special about Fraser Coast Hospice is how it humanises what is ultimately our most shared experience. In a culture that often pushes death to the periphery, the Hospice brings it back into focus with grace and tenderness.

There’s something profoundly moving about a space that honours not just the physical journey, but acknowledges the deeper questions that arise as we approach life’s horizon. The Hospice creates room for whatever beliefs bring comfort— whether that’s faith in an afterlife, the continuation of energy in different forms, or simply finding meaning in the legacy we leave behind. This openness allows each person to find their own sense of completion and significance, without imposing any singular view.

This compassionate approach depends on a community of dedicated individuals who believe in the value of dignified end-of-life care. At the heart of this community are the volunteers, whose presence embodies the hospice philosophy of human connection during life’s most vulnerable moments.

For these volunteers who give their time, the rewards are immeasurable. There’s a genuine camaraderie that develops among those who share in this most meaningful work – a connection that comes from collectively contributing to something profoundly important.

Of course, providing this level of care requires resources. While government funding helps, it doesn’t cover everything. The Hospice needs to raise nearly $750,000 in public money annually to maintain their services – that’s over $2,000 every day.

This is where you might consider becoming a Hero of Hospice through their monthly giving program.

Whether you contribute $10 or $100 per month, you’re helping ensure that when your neighbours, friends, or perhaps someday your own loved ones need this care, it will be there waiting.

Or perhaps you might consider volunteering.

While it might seem counterintuitive, those who volunteer at the Hospice often describe it as one of the most life-affirming choices they’ve ever made.

As I reflect on what Fraser Coast Hospice means to our community, what stands out is the gentle reassurance it provides. Not just for those receiving care in their final days, but for the families who can focus on what matters most – being present, sharing love, and saying meaningful goodbyes.

And isn’t that, ultimately, what we all hope for?

Congratulations Victoria on being named a semifinalist in the Channel 7 Young Achievers Small Business Awards! What does this recognition mean to you?

Thank you! It’s an incredible honour. This isn’t just about personal success- it’s a recognition of the hard work, resilience, and passion that goes into building a business in regional Queensland. It also highlights the potential for young entrepreneurs in Hervey Bay to create something innovative and successful, proving that big things can happen outside the major cities.

Tell us about StyleIt Hervey Bay. How did you start, and what inspired you to create this business?

I launched StyleIt Hervey Bay at 19, and now, three years later, we’re one of the go-to styling businesses in the region. I saw a gap in the market for high-end, luxury property styling, especially in the investment, airbnb, and new construction sectors. I wanted to bring a level of sophistication that wasn’t widely available in regional Queensland, helping Developers, and Property owners maximise their spaces with bold, tailored design.

What Challenges did you face as a young business owner, and how did you overcome them?

Being young in business means constantly proving yourself. Experience is often associated with age, so I had to demonstrate my expertise through results.

Logistics was also a big challenge- regional businesses rely heavily on freight, and getting access to high- end pieces wasn’t always easy.

But I’ve learned to strategies, build strong industry connections, and stay ahead of trends to ensure my clients receive the best.

What impact does your business have on Hervey Bay and the wider Fraser Coast?

StyleIt Hervey Bay is not just about making homes look beautiful- it’s about driving property value, helping investors see higher return, and showcasing the potential of regional Queensland properties. By bring a curated, luxury aesthetics to homes, Im helping change the perception of what’s possible here.

You’re setting an example for young professionals in the region. What advice would you give others looking to start their business?

If you have an an idea, go for it. Success isn’t about having everything figured out from day one-it’s about learning as you go, staying adaptable, and believing in your vision. Also, build a strong network.

Surrounding yourself with people who support and challenge you is key.

How do you see the future of business for young entrepreneurs in Hervey Bay?

It’s an exciting time! More young professionals are recognising that they don’t have to leave regional Queensland to build something incredible. With the rise of digital platforms, better connectivity, and a growing economy, there’s so much opportunity. I hope my journey encourages others to think big and take risks.

What role do young business owners play in shaping the region’s growth?

We bring fresh perspectives, innovation, and energy. Whether it’s in design, tech, tourism or trade, young business owners are driving change and elevating Hervey Bay as a place for highquality services and experiences. When young people thrive, the whole community benefits.

What’s next for you and StyleIt Hervey Bay?

Growth! I’m always looking for ways to expand our services, refine our styling approach, and work on bigger, more impactful projects. the work boots up. Why isn’t this a topic that is discussed more amongst people? Just because you don’t struggle now doesn’t mean you are able to comfortably retire. If you have equity in your property and you are on a decent wage within your family, I urge you to have your finances reviewed.

Find out where you stand, what your retirement looks like, what options you have to increase your NET assets and cashflow position to benefit your life now and in the future. Ask all the questions and if you don’t know what to ask just call anyway. You won’t regret the conversation, but you may regret not having it and realising you were one decision away from making a choice that would have changed your future

think it would be fair for me to say that peace wouldn’t come to mind when people think about things related to money. We’ve had rate hikes, people struggling to pay mortgages and find rentals. Grocery prices have skyrocketed and people are finding themselves budgeting over the small things and rethinking their spending habits. Although I believe we all sometimes need a little shake up, it has been hard for a lot of people.

Through recent experiences in my life I have found that people need an advocate. They need a support system and guidance. I need those things also. A business coach, an accountant, a financial planner, even my own mortgage broker! I am finding my name is being spoken of in instances when people need advice and guidance with their finances.

Finding this out absolutely lights me up. Our money is such a private topic. It is such an important topic.

I believe that everyone should be conscious of what position they’re in, what they’re capable of achieving and what their future looks like. As you get older the reality of what your life looks like in retirement becomes more important. It should be something to consider at all ages throughout your working life.

Don’t think you aren’t worthy of the conversation.

Don’t think it doesn’t apply to you, it does. A plan must start somewhere. Whatever wage you are on, whether you own property or you don’t. Give yourself peace of mind with knowing. Because no one regrets gaining knowledge and the power to steer their future in the right direction. You just need an advocate willing to understand you, where you want to go, help you learn how to get there and give some pointers along the way. Ultimately what I’d like to see is people feeling more encouraged to prioritise their future.

PEACE THAT PASSES UNDERSTANDING

T

hree aspects are often considered when the subject of peace comes up; world peace, personal peace and spiritual peace.

We would all wish for world peace, as it has a ripple effect of producing stability, justice, economic development, hope for the future and freedom from fear of war or violence. If we were all peaceful, then the world would be peaceful but sadly, it seems unattainable.

However, on a personal level, peace begins with each one of us as we intentionally pursue truth, authenticity, good sense, integrity, empathy, goodness and mercy.

On a spiritual level, the phrase ‘peace that passes understanding’ (Philippians 4:7) is often explained as a divine tranquility or calmness that transcends human logic. It is not merely an absence of stress or conflict; rather, it is a state of inward rest given supernaturally. It is peace that exceeds a rational explanation.

Mentally, we like to have all the answers, but the heart welcomes life in which the answers sometimes remain a mystery.

When it comes to fashion, that peace of mind is the result of having made good choices, so that one special piece is valued and worn time and time again with the same enjoyment as when it was first purchased. although I had savings, was watching the expenses fly out the door. I felt depressed, scared, lonely and was watching my dreams slip away.”

Justine said a nomination to local charity Rally for a Cause for financial support helped change her circumstances and boosted her mental wellbeing.

“Rally for a Cause provided me food and fuel vouchers which really helped. I still felt unworthy of the support.

“But the main thing this support really did was make me feel less alone. I started to feel really supported and loved.”

This support from stranger made Justine realise she was a cared for member of the community.

“Every time I used one of the vouchers to pay for fuel or food in Brisbane, I said to myself, I have this because I am loved and worth it. It gave me such a lift.”

Justine’s progress allowed her to return to work six months ago.

The Howard resident remains extremely grateful for the support she received.

“I honestly can’t put into words how appreciative and grateful I am to everybody that supports Rally for a Cause.

inding peace and restoring normality to your life after a life-changing medical diagnosis is a constant battle. But the strength and support of strangers continues to inspire Fraser Coast nurse Justine.

The emergency department nurse forged a career by assisting others during some of the toughest times of their lives but never expected a sudden Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis in December 2023 would change her life.

Justine was the main earner of her family and after her diagnosis she had to take indefinite, unpaid leave until her health battle could be managed.

“Obviously this had an immediate impact on the family - financially and emotionally,” Justine said.

“Diagnosis and treatment meant many trips to Brisbane. I was beyond devastated, and financially,

Charity general manager Scott Rowe said this support has resulted in immediate assistance and support to more than 350 families.

“We can only provide this support thanks to the way the entire community has embraced us, our donors, sponsors, Dunga Derby participants and corporate partners are the true heroes,” Scott said.

s I stepped out of an ancient jeepney at Subic Bay, the salty air mingled with the scent of the tropical foliage and scattered debris covered in a thick, choking layer of

I had travelled from Hong Kong the day before, on a mission, not just to deliver provisions and supplies after a spate of recent typhoons, but to connect with those in need, a group of nuns and their patients in a palliative care unit, part of a run-down barrio just outside of the city.

The unit was a humble place, its bare concrete walls made alive with colours painted by the hands of volunteers. Sunlight poked through holes in an ancient alsonite roof, and large windows let in a cool breeze, their glass replaced with chicken wire long ago.

Inside, I was welcomed by the soft laughter of the nuns as they tended to their patients. Their faces radiated a pure kindness and warmth, a stark contrast to the inevitable sadness that persisted outside the walls of the building.

I waited at the entrance awkwardly at first, a little out of place as the obvious foreigner wandering into a realm of so much suffering and pain.

Agnes, the Mother Superior, arrived in a flurry of black vestments. Sensing my discomfort, she beamed at me and took my arm.

“God will show you your purpose here” she said, as she guided me along her rounds.

As we moved through the unit, I was drawn to an old woman lying in one of the beds. Her frail, skeletal body was a testament to the battle she had fought against a long illness, but her eyes still sparkled with life. I approached uncertainly and gently took her hand. It was soft and leathery, a reminder of days long past, long-lived years - both bitter and sweet.

Her name I learned, was Maribel. An interpreter told me that she had spent her life caring for others, a true matriarch of her family. As she spoke in whispers, I followed the beautifully Spanish accented English of the interpreter closely, hanging on her every word. She shared tales of her youth, growing up on a farm and of the enduring strength of human connections in her village.

I heard how she had joined a resistance group fighting the Japanese in WWII, smuggling. food and water to injured American GI’s. She had fallen in love with one of them – a blonde boy named Johnny. Despite her best efforts to help him, he died of Malaria in the brutal conditions of the POW camp near her village.

The interpreter told me that she had never loved another man from that day on. In the silence that followed, I saw single fat tear roll down Maribel’s cheek as she drifted off to sleep, exhausted by the effort of recalling her sorrow.

As the days passed, I would sit by Maribel’s bedside, holding her hand, humming music, and feeding her mashed bananas. One afternoon, Agnes stopped by. She looked at me with her beatific smile.

“I see you found your purpose“ she said. After a moment’s hesitation she added, “You know that she thinks you are her Johnny -come back for her, don’t you?”

Later that evening, Maribel’s breathing slowed. I felt the weight of the moment overwhelm me as I looked over at the nuns, who quietly filled the room with an air of reverence. Hot, wet tears welled up in my eyes as she squeezed my hand tighter, and in that moment, I understood the utter fragility of life.

I watched as Maribel took her final breaths, her face turning to gaze up at me with a serene expression. Just before she slipped away, she

ALBUM OF THE MONTH made a heroic effort to whisper, ‘Johnny,’ with her last breath. As her hand loosened its grip on mine, I felt a wave of stillness wash over me, a profound realisation that love and compassion can transcend the pain of mortality.

In that moment I realised that this was the essence of peace - an acceptance of life and death, along with Maribel’s unshakeable belief that God had a joyful reunion planned for her in a better place.

“She’s at peace now,” Agnes said, embracing me solemnly. I nodded, weeping uncontrollably.

As the nuns lined up outside the unit to farewell me the next day, I took Agnes’s hand, kissed it and pressed all the pesos I had with me into it, asking for her blessing.

“Maribel has already given it to you my son,” she replied. “She has shown you the meaning of peace.

The more you share it with others, the greater your own peace will become.”

As the jeepney jolted away down the dirt track, I turned and caught a last glimpse of the nuns waving farewell through the swirling dust of the tires.

“Did you have a relative in there sir?” The driver asked politely.

“Just an old friend,” I replied. “She was my teacher.”

ne upside to the recent flooding is it will fire the fish up and be a good productive winter season.

THE BIG CATCH

GOOD TIMES AHEAD Burrum

The Burrum has been great this season for barra and jacks and continues to deliver. Working with soft plastics around the snags has seen the best results along with hard bodie lures. Small gt’s, queenfish and cod have also been reported up the river. Around the mouth whiting will be a good option with live yabbies always getting results. Out the front, mac tuna can be found under the birds along with a few longtail tuna.

Sandy Straits

In the Sandy Straits, whiting, bream, flathead, trevally, cod and grunter have been reported coming from the creeks. A few blue salmon have been reported in the Turkey Straits area on soft plastics and soft vibes. Barra have been caught in the lower reaches of the Mary on a range of techniques. Crabs should be on the move as well, so make sure you take the pots with you.

Local Reefs

The local reefs will fish well for cod, a late season coral trout, golden trevally, small snapper and blackall this week. Keep an eye out for busting tuna schools as there have been a few schools about in the shipping channels from the Fairway to Little Woody.

Platypus Bay

It has been tough fishing deeper in the water column of late with the continuous threat of being sharked.

Targeting big fish is a waste of time as they rarely make it to the surface. Longtail and mac tuna are still about with some good numbers working the smaller bait on the surface and are a little easier to get past the sharks. The tuna should hang about for a while longer as it seems the bait is not ready to leave. A few small and large mouth nannygai have been reported so taking some fresh baits at night.

Urangan Pier

Recent pier closures have seen most reports from the first channel. Whiting, bream and flathead have been common captures.

Wild Grounds

The wide grounds have been producing the usual catches of reef species of late. Snapper will soon move in once we see the water tempreture begin to come down through the month with the 25 fathom hole area seeing the first run generally. There is still stacks of pelagic activity out there so take a spin rod and some metal slices and stick baits.

CLASSIC CURRIED SAUSAGES Ingredients • ½ tbsp oil

• 1kg Zac’s award winning sausages • 2 garlic cloves, minced

• 1 onion, halved and sliced

• 1 carrot, peeled, sliced on the diagonal • 1 tbsp Keen’s curry powder • 3 tbsp plain flour

• 2 cups (500ml) chicken stock, low sodium • 1 tsp sugar • ½ tsp salt

• ½ tsp black pepper • 1 cup frozen peas Instructions 1.

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

In the same skillet, add garlic and onion. Cook for 2 minutes until translucent.

Cook sausages, turning to brown all over then remove. Optional: slice sausages into pieces on the diagonal.

Add curry powder and stir for 30 seconds.

Add flour and mix for 30 seconds.

Gradually pour in chicken stock, mixing constantly.

Add carrots, sugar, salt and pepper, stir well.

Add sausages and peas, bring to a simmer and cook for 3 minutes or until thickens.

Serve over mashed potato, rice, pasta or noodles.

For low carb option, try mashed cauliflower.

I

used to think peace was something I had to chase.

That if I could just do the right things, meditate more, work less, be a better husband and father, get my business running smoothly… then I’d finally feel that deep exhale of peace. Life doesn’t work like that though. And if I’ve learned anything through breathwork, fatherhood, and walking this path as a man, it’s that peace isn’t something you find. It’s something you allow.

I’ve lived in a state of movement for years, traveling in a van with my family, raising four kids, running a business, and holding space for others to heal. Even now, with a home base and a dedicated breathwork space, life hasn’t magically slowed down. If anything, the demands are greater. But my relationship with peace has changed. I’ve stopped looking for it outside of myself.

Peace goes beyond the absence of noise, stress, or responsibility. It’s not something waiting for you on the other side of a retreat or a perfectly structured morning routine. It’s the quiet knowing that you are exactly where you’re meant to be, even in the mess, even in the uncertainty.

But peace also takes work. It’s a choice. A commitment. Some days, it’s easy. Other days, it’s a fight against old stories, expectations, and the pressure to do rather than just be. As a father, it’s in those small moments, watching my kids laugh, being fully present with them instead of distracted by the next thing on my list. As a husband, it’s in the space I create for connection. And as a man, it’s in the moments I choose to drop my armour and trust that I am enough, as I am.

If you’re chasing peace, I invite you to stop running.

Take a deep breath. Right now. Feel it fill you. That’s peace. Not in the future. Not when life is perfect. But right here, inside of you.

Because peace isn’t something we need to hunt down and find. It’s something we remember.

A Simple Breath Practice for Inner Peace If you need a quick reset, try this.

1. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in through your nose.

2. Hold for four seconds, feeling the stillness in your body.

Breathwork has been my greatest teacher in this.

It has shown me that peace isn’t about escaping discomfort, it is more about sitting in it, feeling it, and allowing it to move through. That deep inhale and surrendering exhale remind me, over and over again, that peace isn’t a destination you program into Google Maps. It’s right here… in this breath. In this moment.

3. Exhale slowly through your mouth, as if you’re sighing out tension.

4. Pause for a moment before taking the next inhale.

5. Repeat for five rounds, letting each breath soften you into the present moment.

Notice how just a few breaths can shift your state.

Peace is right here within you, waiting to be unlocked.

MANIFESTING YOUR DREAMS

his month I am sharing my thoughts about a topic that’s often talked about but is not well understood – manifestation.

A simplistic interpretation of manifestation is that when we focus hard on something we really want, we attract that ‘desire’ closer to us. In other words, just by concentrating on a goal and affirming we deserve it, the universe will provide that outcome for us. There is a kind of magnetic attraction that facilitates this, since the Universe is infinite, has the resources to create whatever we need and responds to our positive thoughts. The flip side to this relationship is that if we focus on negative thoughts and believe that we are powerless, we will continually be disappointed.

This belief was popular in spiritual books and films during the 1990s and early 2000s. However, I don’t believe that thoughts and affirmations alone will give me what I want. Positive thinking, while very important, is only one part of a more complex process.

Why?

We live in a physical world. We are spiritual beings who have chosen to experience life in solid form, surrounded by solid objects, in societies that are governed by human laws. Obviously, I know that in essence everything is energy, but to our eyes and bodies our world is solid and 3 dimensional. This immediately makes us subject to the rules of the

planet and the society we live in.

I can wish daily for a new car, put pictures of it on my vision board, affirm I deserve it and even thank the Universe in advance for bringing it to me, but most likely, unless I do the work to earn the money for a new car, my desire will go unfulfilled. Let’s just say, I’ve never yet won a large raffle.

All is not lost, however. The power of manifestation is very real, and positive thinking does provide us with our hearts’ desires, when we make all the necessary plans and take all the necessary steps in the physical world for success.

We need to align our worlds – the physical and the spiritual – so that we have maximum power working with us. Positive thinking, affirmations and prayer strengthen our intentions and communicate these intentions to the Universe. These strategies also motivate us to stay on track, even when times get tough. Our spiritual friends are aware of our thoughts and efforts. If it is for our highest good, they will offer guidance and alert us to helpful opportunities.

Manifestation relies on us remembering we are spiritual beings in a physical world. When we take personal responsibility for working towards an important outcome, universal energies align to support us. These are my thoughts. In our fast paced world today, embracing peace can be life altering! Peace individually can be mastered through, not only many new age techniques such as yoga, meditation, breathing techniques, but also through whatever gives you joy. (i.e reading, nature, running.) When we feel great, this ripples to the people around us, and ultimately to the rest of the world!

Of course, if peace is difficult for you to achieve, please consider support from a kinesiologist or other professional.

Gemini, I am drawn to ask, have you been weighing up a decision of some sort, and this may be weighing you down. Be aware if there is any tension here. A good stress reliever is to hold the palm of one hand on your forehead for a few minutes. This helps clear thinking and helps with decision making. Remember to always trust that first instinct.

Snaps from International Women’s Day Brunch On Friday March 14, Regional Development Australia Wide Bay Burnett team hosted an IWD Brunch with Alive Magazine Wide Bay. Our guests were treated to the beautiful voice of Sam Maddison Music and looked after by the wonderful staff at Banksia Seafood and Grill. All profits raised went to www.hairaid.org.au an Australian non-profit organisation that works globally to make a difference and create change by teaching women and children living in poverty the skill of hair cutting, steering them along a path of self-reliance and independence. Thanks to our guests’ generosity, this event raised over $1000 for Geri’s next trip to Cambodia, and will pay for 5 cutting kits.
