Managing workplace violence and aggression requires an all inclusive approach that prioritises both safety and communication. Establishing clear policies outlining acceptable behaviours and procedures for incidents when they occur is vital. Equally important is the training of staff and teams in conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques. Empowering individuals and groups to handle aggressive situations effectively is key to optimum success. In the case of rate payers, clients and customers, maintaining a calm and professional demeanour can help diffuse tensions. Recognising early warning signs of hostility, such as raised voices or antagonistic body language, allows staff to intervene before situations escalate. Implementing a supportive environment, where employees feel valued and heard, can reduce internal aggression significantly.

Earlier this month the talented team at Moorabool Shire Council released their savvy campaign, It’s OK to Walk Away. This impressive framework features a practical easily interpreted five step approach. Truly it is such an impressive course of action.

Their opening line starts with “If you’re facing occupational violence or aggressive behaviour, it’s okay to remove yourself from the situation, report it and seek support.”

Check out page 36 for their campaign structure. Bravo to Josh Warner, Executive Manager People and Culture, Antony Barnes and Karen Gore for this inspirational work.

Derek Madden, what a team of champions you have there.

Well done Moorabool Shire Council!
