Two worlds collided for me this past week – neither of them wanted nor welcome. On the one hand, Cyclone Koji brought heavy rainfall, damaging winds and flooding to parts of Far North Queensland, where I’m spending my summer break. On the other, scorching heat in Victoria led to destructive bushfires, including one just 25km from my own residence. While keeping one eye on the weather forecast, preparing for any eventuality that might arise from the tropical storm in my host community, my heart was also with those potentially in the line of fire in my home state, including some dear friends. (Thankfully, they are all OK.) It’s easy to overlook the magnitude of devastation elsewhere when you’re battling adversity yourself, and local news is saturated with stories of suffering in your own back yard. So, for the record, Koji weakened after making landfall between Ayr and Bowen but resulted in rainfall of up to 500mm in some areas and turned the town of Clermont into a raging torrent, inundating homes and businesses. People were forced to evacuate, others were trapped, roads were closed, communities like Eungella were isolated (and could remain so for months), and initial stock losses were reported at more than 50,000. Down south, about 10 of almost 70 blazes burning at the peak of the fire catastrophe caused significant damage and heartbreak, stretching from Longwood and Ravenswood in Central Victoria, to Walwa in the north-east, the Otways in the south-west, Natimuk in the Western District and Dargo in East Gippsland. An estimated 400,000+ hectares was blackened; more than 700 structures were destroyed, including 228 houses; over 16,500 livestock and untold numbers of wildlife died; tragically, one man also perished. It’s already been a terribly challenging start to 2026. Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by these calamitous events, particularly those left to rebuild their lives and livelihoods.
