CROSS CULTURAL BUSINESS
robert tauler Attorney Robert Tauler shares with us his experiences at
Harvard Law, starting his own firm, and succeeding in the courtroom Tell us why you started your own law firm. Coming out of Harvard Law School, I was fortunate enough to work at some of the top law firms in the country. Eventually I felt that I could provide similar results for clients on my own platform. Our firm specializes in high-stakes commercial litigation, representing both plaintiffs and defendants in a variety of areas, including the following: breach of contract, fraud, unfair competition and civil appeals. Building my own firm from the ground up gave me the freedom to devote my resources to a broader array of things. Now, I am able to have a lot more direction over the type of cases and clients I take on, such as the Latino-owned businesses, as well as the types of opportunities I want to create for myself and my clients. It has given me a more well-rounded life, as well as the opportunity to become more involved in the community. Describe your experience as a Latino attending Harvard Law School. At Harvard Law School, I was granted access to the most talented and esteemed people in the country and learned with classmates who became some of the most dynamic people I have ever met. Harvard created a diverse educational experience, not just with race and ethnicity, but in terms of geographical diversity. As a Latino, this diversity helped me gain a deeper understanding of countries all over the world. Their ability to handpick students to create these environments is a reflection of what makes Harvard such a premiere institution. How has your Latino culture influenced your personal and professional life? As a child of Cuban immigrant parents, my heritage has taught me values that I carry over in both my personal and professional life. My parents never had the opportunity in Cuba to pursue what they enjoyed most, so they left and had to start anew. This taught me to value the opportunities that I was given in being able to pursue my dreams. My parents fleeing from a Communist regime also influenced my decision to go to law school because I quickly realized the effect that law and the rule of law can have on people’s happiness and their lives in general. Through my family’s experience, I’ve seen firsthand how power left in

the wrong hands can negatively impact people’s lives. From that point, I was drawn to the legal profession to be able to have a say in the political process. As an attorney, I have the opportunity to make an impact on communities that are disadvantaged, which are oftentimes composed of Latinos due to the lack of resources available to them. At Tauler Litigation Group, I devote ten percent of my work to pro bono cases in order to help these underprivileged communities. It’s important to help people who are less fortunate as opposed to just working for work’s sake. You’ve won four cases in the last year and still had time to start up new projects. Tell us how you did it. I am thrilled to have successfully won four cases in the last year. Truth be told, I am really good at what I do. Being the owner of my own firm better allows me to make ambitious decisions that get results. What would you say to the younger generation of Latinos aspiring to create their own opportunities? Even though the Latino community is comprised of various cultures and ethnicities, we have more in common than most think. It is important to identify with each other, unite under one banner and mutually respect one another. In order to create your own opportunities and start your own business, it is necessary to have faith and patience. Faith, whether spiritual or mental, in your goals and abilities will help through the darkest and most frustrating times. Patience is equally as important because it is a way to keep sane when things don’t turn out as planned. What gives you ALEGRIA? Alegria is simply knowing that you did a good job, achieved your potential and did your best with what you were given. Family, being successful and being able to support my loved ones with that success is what gives me Alegria. After all, family, hard work and patience are what drove my success in this industry.
